John Murray trained as a doctor, and his debut collection of stories, A Few Short Notes on Tropical Butterflies, reveals its author's background. Not all of his characters are physicians, but they tend to share a doctor's ability to concentrate on details and compartmentalize emotions. In "The Hill Station," the American-born daughter of Indian parents returns to India, where she speaks at a conference on infectious diseases. She is charged with new, ungovernable feelings when she finally meets actual patients with the disease she specializes in; heretofore, she had only known cholera under a microscope. Murray bumps his heroine into a new, looser way of living as she travels deeper into dirty, disease-ridden India. In the title story, a doctor mourns the loss of his sister and comes to terms with his family history, all the while examining butterflies. In "Blue," a climber ascends a Himalayan peak under dire circumstances and encounters ghostly memories of his father. These stories of frustrated, intelligent achievers can recall Mark Helprin, and Murray has, too, some of Helprin's ambitious scope. These stories aren't as crystalline as Helprin's, but that's a small complaint to lodge against an elegant first collection. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
These vivid and compelling tales, many set in Africa and Asia, are about immigrants and others facing change and dislocation. The science is never pedantic; indeed the language of biology and natural history is used to great lyrical effect. The stories are accomplished and seasoned, remarkably so given that this is the author's first book. Murray is adept at holding together a complex narrative and creating characters who reach out emotionally to the reader upon first meeting.
Global in scope, classical in form, evocative of place, and deeply emotional, this collection marks the beginning of what promises to be an illustrious career.

Author knows his craft. Stories that keep you reading & stay with you........2006-08-26
This is simply a great collection of short stories. They each stand alone as very well written, often wry, and pithy. Together they demonstrate the author's range and skills. This work is A-1 as each is masteful and engaging. Murray's writing or subjects can seem quite "masculine," yet then there is "The Hill Station" or "A few Short Notes.." and you see too an alternate perspective, character. Some of the settings in stories are large and exotic: mountain climbing, Third World disaster scene. But in each there is a tale of what Life deals us all and how fates twists and how people fare under pressure and in distant scenes. We hang on in each story, wanting to know what will happen, how will s/he react and fare.
Terrific Medical Tales Set In Warring&Exotic Locales! .......2004-11-30
While there may be a surplus of great short stories out there, this collection should definitely rank among the all time greats! If you're looking for some great, terse, to the point writing about the current situation in places like Rwanda, India, and similar exotic locales, this is the best place to start! Mr. Murray tells a great story, and though there is plenty of expert medical procedures and info here, you won't feel condescended to in the least. Yes, we all know how horrible cholera is. Read this first story to REALLY know about it! And the same holds for every tale here. In short, an absolutely top collection!
A gorgeous first work of fiction!.......2004-02-11
It might be possible to read through this book quickly, just as it might be possible to chug down a bottle of vintage wine, but I wouldn't recommend it. Murray's stories - full of subtleties and set on several continents - deserve to be savored. In particular, I loved "The Carpenter Who Looked Like A Boxer," the story of a man who has built a life for himself and his children after being abandoned by his wife. Most impressive is that, while most of the stories deal with themes of loss, abandonment and difficult decisions about life, their impact is one of beauty and hope - and I hope we'll see more from this writer!
Butterflies.......2003-09-05
Yet again, i seem to disagree with the majority of Amazon reviewers...it's not deliberate i hasten to add!
This is a collection of short stories that don't seem to be linked by a common thread - all the stories bar one feature fathers, many feature doctors and/or medical dramas (Murray trained in medicine), many feature India or Indian ex-patriates - but there is no one common theme. It could be that these stories are all Murray has written, but if not you have to ask yourself if the editor really thought things through. By halfway through, you start each story wondering if yet again Murray will be using the same themes....the story that is a bit different `Blue' with its austere setting, is all the more striking for not featuring the tropics. By the end, you feel that the writer is being arrogant, and rather than writing for a reader, he is simply working out his `issues' story after story to the detriment of enjoying his work.
Except for the last story, these don't seem to work very well as short stories, rather they feel like chapters from novels; or perhaps ideas for novels that didn't quite grow.
While there is some lovely prose, there is not nearly enough to cover its flaws. The characters are interesting as isolated examples, but they become very boring when then seem to be in each story, just in a different guise - son/daughter dealing with clever and methodical father/grandfather while mother tries to grow as an individual.
It will be interesting to see if Murray writes a novel, and if so if he moves on to exploring new themes. Until then,
A Passion to Write Well.......2003-07-10
I've met so many doctors over the years who have incredible talent in other areas. Some manage to balance a full career and still pursue their painting or their love of the cello until they retire to live amazingly long lives, fueled by their passion on which they can now totally focus.
I don't know what Dr. Murray's agenda will be, but I hope he can manage the balance between writing and a medical career. Murray understands the human heart. He has a great understanding of that one large or small situation or life event that hurls a person into choices they might never have made.
Add to this his knowledge of the exotic world and its suffering about which most of us are totally in the dark, his facinating data, probably collected over a lifetime, regarding entymology, and finally his amazing ability with language, and you've got a tremendous reading experience.
I envy anyone who has yet to read this debut of short stories. I grabbed it from the library after reading two Sunday newspaper reviews. I was so struck by his writing that I immediately sought out a signed edition. I can open it to any page and start reading prose that is closer to poetry.

Great.......2007-07-29
I just finished reading this book yesterday and I'm devastated I didn't get the sequel at the same time as the first book. I'm soo pleased I stumbled upon this book. Its soo gripping and vivid I just couldn't put it down. Highly recommend it !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in love with her writing.......2007-05-29
It's a rich and unforgettable tale of dazzling scenes and vivid personalities. I have read many Vampire stories, never thought I'd be this surprised...
Vampires and much more..........2007-05-12
I loved this book. It is a different kind of Vampire story.
The time and places and descriptions are wonderful.
You feel you are experiencing them as you read.
The character and courage of each individual keeps you
captivated till the end.
I can't wait for the next book.
Am I normal? I've fallen for a vampire!.......2006-06-11
This book is so different to the normal (yawn) vampire stories, you know, garlic and crucifix.... these vampires - or Dark Kind - to give their real name - are so believable! They kill to survive, but then so does a tiger or a cat or a wolf .... and they have a code of honour and ... oh Azrar is wonderful and Jazriel... what can I say??? Swoon.....!
I can't believe this story was made up. I totally believe vamps really did help us humans in the war!
Is there going to be another novel about the Dark Kind? The author says yes. Oh good!!!!!!!
My journey to the Land of Secrets and Shadows.......2005-12-21
I couldnt wait for my copy to arrive from Amazon USA, I borrowed a copy. Its a wonderful book, like watching a vivid Hollywood blockbuster. Expertly crafted with brilliant characters, Ms Dane has taken all the well-worn Goth cliches such as gloomy castles and wolf-ridden forests and given them fresh new vibrancy with her real passion for the genre. One of the blurbs calls Blood Tears; 'Sexy, subversive and beautifully written.' Says it all! Looking forward to my own copy to arrive and the promised sequels. And the other reviewer is right, Jazriel is gorgeous!!
Customer Reviews:
Raven Dane's beautiful, very bad boy Jazriel stars in Blood Lament.......2007-05-09
After spellbinding the reader with dark enchantment in Blood Tears, Raven Dane seduces us with Blood Lament, the latest in the Legacy of the Dark Kind series. It tells the story of her charismatic , beautiful and very bad boy Jazriel and his reckless downward spiral which threatens the other surviving Dark Kind. As with the first book, this is beautifully written, fast-paced and intriguing. And it leaves the reader thirsting for more dark deeds and adventures with the Dark Kind vampires. And not a bat, cape, coffin or frightened maiden throughout. A startling original story.
Customer Reviews:
very explicit.......2005-11-29
I would have given this book a 1 except it did have a plot. I like my books a little "steamy" but this is a little hard core for me. So if you like to use your imagination and have al little mystery w/your steam this is not a book for you.
A "who done it" sexy love story........2005-03-28
Blood of the Raven is an awesome read. Gabriel has been watching Fate for years, making sure no harm comes to her. Late one night he's detained and the unthinkable happens, Fate is attacked. But whose done it? Vampir? Human? Dominion? No one knows. Gabriel takes her in: helping her to deal with her new life as a Vampir, but Fate's been burned before so its hard for her to trust again. You'll either be clicking away, or flipping the pages quickly as you read frantically to the end to see who is behind the attack that has changed Fates life forever, and weither or not Gabriel can change her mind about giving her heart away. The conflict is real, the mystery intriging, and the sex scenes hot. The secondary characters were well described with definitive personalities, I can't wait to read their stories. This is the first book I've read in this series, I can't wait to read the rest.
My first, but it won't be my last!.......2005-03-22
Blood of the Raven is the story of Gabriel Letourneau and Fate Harding. Gabriel is sworn to protect Fate, but after she is attacked and becomes one of the Embraced, he has to take her in and teach her about what she has become. This is a great adventure story and the love scenes between the lead characters fairly scorch the words off the pages. I also met several characters who I hope will soon have their own stories.
This is the first story I've read from Anya Bast, and with such a high standard of story telling, I'll certainly be reading more from her.
HOT, HOT, HOT, VAMPIRES.......2005-03-22
Gabriel Letourneau is a hot vamp gardian sworn to protect Fate, his charge. After an violent attact leaves her embraced into his world, he must teach her everthing he know to survive as a fledging vamp but can he protect her from himself. These two burn up the pages. This is definitely a keeper that you will want to read again and again. If this is the first book I can't wait to get my hands on the next in the series.
Fantastic Vampire book.......2005-03-22
Gabriel Letourneau guarded Fate Harding during the last 5 years. She is completely unaware that he is her guarding her, but she fells drawn to him. After a brutal attack Fate is embraced into the world of Vampires. As newborn Vampire she needs Gabriel to satisfy her hunger for blood and sex.
This is book is full of wonderful characters and hot & steamy sex scenes. A really fantastic book. Don't forget to read the other two books of the series (Blood of the Rose & Blood of an Angel)

It is a tale that has been retold countless times through the centuries — and here, in an enthralling edition illustrated by a noted Tolkien artist, the mighty Beowulf is well set to capture new legions of followers. This contemporary retelling of the ancient epic — narrated with a touch of banter by the faithful Wiglaf and featuring vividly dramatic illustrations — follows the mythic hero from his disarming of the gruesome Grendel to his sword battle with the monster’s sea hag mother to his final, fiery showdown with an avenging dragon.

Good complex plot!!!.......2005-09-01
Blood Raven's Last Battle Prince is an interesting read with a good complex plot line. Most characters are well thought out and presented in great detail. This detail really does not distract from the plot. A good amount of research went in to this work. I would recommend this title if you are looking for a plot line that is larger then most.

Blood Tastes Lousy With Scotch.......2007-07-18
Robin C. Westmiller has long been an advocate for those who couldn't fight for themselves. Fighting injustice was a passion that seemed to come natural to her. Still, she never thought that she would end up having to fight lawyers and family members over guardianship abuse. She definitely never thought that her own father would be the victim.
Blood Tastes Lousy with Scotch is the author's memoirs about her battle. Ruby Cohen, the author's father, had operated Cohen's Quality Bakery (with its World Famous Raison Pumpernickel) in Ellenville, New York his entire adult life. Then in 2002, he suffered a minor stroke and was forced to sell the bakery. For several years, his wife took care of him without incident. A trip to Florida to visit relatives would change everything.
Blood Tastes Lousy with Scotch is an incredibly scary read. We all read about elder abuse but never think that it could happen to those we love. Still, greed will make people do crazy things. Even something as simple as a stroke can reduce someone's normal defenses enough to throw there life into utter chaos.
Blood Tastes Lousy With Scotch.......2007-05-13
It is a good portrayal of the faults of the conservatorship system in the Courts. My family went through a similar battle in Court in California.
This author is taking names and kicking ... you know........2006-07-27
I read to escape reality and to assure myself that there will be a "happily ever after" ending. I let other reviewers tackle the non-fiction novels. However, on rare occasions, a non-fiction book captures my attention. Such is the case with "Blood Tastes Lousy With Scotch".
What can one person do when the justice system is set up in such a way that distant relatives, lawyers, and state approved organizations can LEGALLY STEAL your parents' entire life savings and financial assets? The answer is nothing, unless that one person is ready to step up to the plate, chance losing everything they own, and happen to have a miracle or two occur. If your parents live over 3,000 miles away, the chances are worse. This is exactly what Robin Cohen Westmiller faced and won.
Ruby and Reginia Cohen grew up during the Depression Era. They worked hard all their lives tending their bakery business in Ellenville, New York. Robin Cohen Westmiller was their only child. Robin, her husband Bill, and their daughters lived in California; totally across country. As the events in this book were happening, the daughters were in school. Robin, herself, was enrolled in college, as a law student.
In the spring of 2002, Robin's mother called to inform her that Ruby had suffered a minor stroke while working at the bakery. Seventy-nine-year-old Reginia was able to take care of her husband though and did not want Robin to fly all the way to New York. The stroke forced them to sell the family business. Ruby had little or no damage physically, but his memory and mental faculties were severely impaired. Robin had no idea how badly her father was impaired though. The beginning of the end occurred in March 2004 when Ruby flew to Florida, against Reginia's urgent pleas, to visit his niece, Gail. Gail immediately began using Florida's weak justice system to imprison Ruby within the state of Florida, begin stealing all of Ruby and Reginia's financial assets, keep Ruby hidden from his immediate family, get his Power of Attorney, become his beneficiary, and more! Of course, Robin took it all to court. But Florida's court system only ended up giving guardianship to Florida's Jewish Family Service. This did NOT take Gail out of the picture, as hoped. The Jewish Family Service and several different attorneys could now begin legally draining all financial avenues. Ruby never had any idea that the people holding him in Florida were attempting to have him divorced from Reginia, take all his money, hide him from his closest family members, take possession of his home in New York, and so much more! Robin often had no idea where her father was being held or how his health was doing.
***** In this book, the author is exposing everything and everyone involved. Readers will find copies of all the documents that support Robin's experiences. All names and agencies in Florida are revealed. This includes full names of Robin's cousins, the judges, the attorneys and the names of their companies, as well as all the organizations and employees that either helped legally steal from Ruby and Reginia or helped free Ruby from being imprisoned within the state of Florida. Hopefully, this story will offer help and support to those who have been victimized so that no other family has to suffer the same. I found this to be an eye opening experience that chilled me to the core. Look out all you heartless agencies and attorneys! Author Robin Cohen Westmiller is taking names and kicking (ahem)! *****

factual.......2006-07-23
As the population ages the issues of the elderly become more widespread and crucial. Robin Cohen Westmiller has written a factual, detailed story of her family's struggle with guardianship abuse. She has courageously told the story of what she, her children and, most importantly, her parents suffered from a system not prepared to face the realities of this theft and mistreatment.
Ruby and Regina Cohen worked hard all their lives taking care of their business, their daughter and their extended family of nieces and nephews. Retirement should have been a time of relaxing together to enjoy the security of family and financial stability. A small stroke changes all that. Ruby suffers a stroke that mildly seems to alter his thought process. For many years he had spent a few weeks in Florida on vacation while Regina stayed home. His health seems to preclude another visit but calls from his niece convince him to go. Nothing his wife or daughter say can convince him that he is not in shape for the journey, not mentally or physically . In March 2004 he got a friend to drive him to the airport and flew to Florida. That was the last his wife would see him for close to 2 years.
What follows is an eye opening tale of the difficulties of fighting a system that is not set up to protect the well being of the elderly. Ms Westmiller's cousins were able to convince Ruby to file for divorce from his wife, refuse to see or speak with his daughter and granddaughters, attempt to empty his bank account and not return home. . As his health becomes worse and worse, Ruby is confined to nursing homes and hospitals. Even the court appointed guardian, the hope to change the situation, continues to drain his bank account, continues the divorce proceedings and let the cousins have a say in his life. Ms Westmiller must battle for her parents future in New York while her father is trapped in Florida from her home in California.
The inclusion of copies of all of the documents that support Ms Westmiller's experiences are a well chosen addition. While she is able to tell her story with minimal emotional slants, it is the inclusion of the actual court records, comparisons of signatures attributed to her father and financial records that make this book so powerful.
It would be wonderful to be able to annnouce that the book has a perfect, happy ending. While Ms Westmiller is able to to rescue her father from the Florida relatives, guardians and court system, the toll, financially, emotionally and physically on her parents is monumental. In less than 2 years they lose everything they has worked for their entire lives- their house, thier back accouunts and, sadly, their chance to live together. This book is a personal attempt by the author to educate others to this danger and raise the awaress of this potential tradgedy.
The Guardianship Nightmare - True Story.......2006-07-12
