Book Description

With his critically acclaimed Among the Missing and Fitting Ends, award-winning author Dan Chaon proved himself a master of the short story form. He is a writer, observes the Chicago Tribune, who can “convincingly squeeze whole lives into a mere twenty pages or so.” Now Chaon marshals his notable talents in his much-anticipated debut novel.

You Remind Me of Me begins with a series of separate incidents: In 1977, a little boy is savagely attacked by his mother’s pet Doberman; in 1997 another little boy disappears from his grandmother’s backyard on a sunny summer morning; in 1966, a pregnant teenager admits herself to a maternity home, with the intention of giving her child up for adoption; in 1991, a young man drifts toward a career as a drug dealer, even as he hopes for something better. With penetrating insight and a deep devotion to his characters, Dan Chaon explores the secret connections that irrevocably link them. In the process he examines questions of identity, fate, and circumstance: Why do we become the people that we become? How do we end up stuck in lives that we never wanted? And can we change the course of what seems inevitable?

In language that is both unflinching and exquisite, Chaon moves deftly between the past and the present in the small-town prairie Midwest and shows us the extraordinary lives of “ordinary” people.

"Dan Chaon's beautiful, effortless prose commands the reader from sentence one, steering us from prickling unease to wrenching pathos, tunneling inside his character's minds and worlds with such authority that everything else seems to disappear. It's almost frightening to be in the hands of so gifted a writer."
JENNIFER EGAN, AUTHOR OF INVISIBLE CIRCUS

"Dan Chaon's novel You Remind Me of Me is nothing short of brilliant. The novel is haunting me and I can't stop thinking about it—both as a reader and as a deeply admiring writer. I wish I had a better adjective than superb."
CAROLINE LEAVITT, AUTHOR OF GIRLS IN TROUBLE

"You Remind Me of Me is one of the strangest, most beautiful, most compelling books I've read in a long time. Unnerving and real, intricately plotted, wonderfully written, it's a Chinese box of a novel, full of hidden pleasures and surprises."
ELIZABETH McCRACKEN, AUTHOR OF THE GIANT'S HOUSE AND NIAGARA FALLS ALL OVER AGAIN

"One of Dan Chaon's many gifts is his ability to probe deeply and delicately into sorrow. This gift serves him beautifully in You Remind Me of Me, a novel about adoption, about the quiet sadness that lies at the bottom of all his characters' troubles."
JANE HAMILTON, AUTHOR OF A MAP OF THE WORLD

"Beautiful, painful, and sure-footed, You Remind Me of Me tracks the delicate connections between a handful of lost and poignant lives, in the process giving them the radiance of a stained glass window. What a writer. Dan Chaon is going to have a breathtaking literary career."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...........2007-09-25

This book was amazing...Chaon writes with a poetry that I haven't read since Kerouac. And not that I'm comparing this book at all to Kerouac, per say, but Chaon writes with the same intensity...he weaves words together so that they flow effortlessly on the page, and then later, stay with you as you progress through the day. He truly makes you look at life with a different perspective. This book is about identity. About how it is formed...is it nature or nurture? Or do we create ourselves? The characters are so intricately linked, and the point of view is such that I have never read before...this book is truly a journey. I will probably reread it sometime again in the future, just so I can extract even more out of it.

2 out of 5 stars Wait, what was the story with this character again?.......2007-04-04

Normally I enjoy stories that switch between characters or jump around in time, but this was done poorly in my opinion. The first part of the book jumped around so much between years and characters that by the time the author started writing in chronological order I had no attachment to the characters and didn't really care what happened to them because I was just starting to get over my confusion with the story.

5 out of 5 stars Book group hit!!.......2007-02-07

Our book group had an in depth and interesting discussion with this book. The themes of loneliness, what constitutes a modern family, and how much does "fate" factor into one's life had us talking for a couple hours. Lots of personal histories were drawn out by our discussion--everyone found characters to which they could relate. Chaon weaves a story that alternates back and forth in time, which might tend to irritate the reader, but it works here. His characters are made real, flaws and all. I went looking for more of his writing.

5 out of 5 stars A moving tale of two brothers.......2007-02-02

Nora Doyle had two sons: Jonah and Troy. The latter she gave for adoption because she felt too young to raise a child. The novel is constructed like a jigsaw puzzle and the reader slowly becomes acquainted with the various characters. Nora the depressive and suicidal mother, Jonah the unlucky father who is caught in drug dealing and who is refused the custody of his son Loomis and Troy's long search for his lost brother with the help of The PeopleSearch Agency.
The characters are extremely well drawn and the author skilfully explores their emotional paths as they all fatally blotch every opportunity they are given. It seems that everything the characters attempt to achieve is doomed to fail. In this sense it is a remarkable novel about failure, oblivion and destruction by apparently everyday minor incidents. It is a claustrophobic tale in which there is not a single destiny which does not go awry. Quite an achievement when one considers that it is Dan Chaon's first novel.

2 out of 5 stars Flat and disappointing.......2007-01-10

I had high hopes for this novel. I have long been a fan of Chaon's short stories. But somehow his first novel is not in the same realm.

The book starts off very well, but soon devolves into a series of flat, disjointed snippets from various stages of the characters' lives. Unlike other readers, I am not at all put off by what some call "depressing" circumstances in a novel. Yet as I continued to read Chaon's book, I came to realize that I just didn't care about his characters. That's what bothered me the most. And for me, it was a struggle to continue reading about characters I don't care about. Your mileage may vary.

Struggling for years with eating disorders, in and out of treatment facilities, Eireann Corrigan is teetering on the brink of no return when her high school boyfriend attempts suicide. Suddenly, Eireann is on the other side of the high-railed hospital bed, and on an entirely unexpected path to recovery herself. In this witty, smart, and heart-rending poetry memoir, author Eireann Corrigan takes a breathtakingly honest look at herself as she wends her way through profoundly difficult times. Her complicated relationship with her sweetheart is captured in the second-person prosaic verses scattered throughout, as well as in the interviews, presumably with a therapist, that fill in many of the blanks left by the sometimes cryptic first-person narrative. We are invited inside Eireann's head to try with her to understand the bewildering chain of events and emotions that led to such chapter heads as "She Tries Out for Varsity Recklessness and Only Makes JV," and "She Never Claimed Reliable Narrator Status," and "Eventually, They Had a Sex Life." (Ages 14 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

For three years, Eireann Corrigan was in and out of treatment facilities for her eating disorders. By the time she graduated high school, her doctors said she was going to die if things didn't change. That July, her high school boyfriend attempted suicide. In one gunshot moment, everything was altered. In a striking and vivid voice, Eireann Corrigan recounts these events, finding meaning in the hurt, humor in the horror, and grace in the struggle that life demands. You Remind Me of You is a testament to the binding ties of love and pain, and the strange paths we take to recovery.

5 out of 5 stars "she never claimed reliable narrator status".......2007-08-30

this is the most amazing, powerful, moving book.

don't be afraid to read it because it's poetry. although it is quite poetic, it reads like a novel. you'll be able to understand everything on a level you weren't aware could happen in literature. that was my experience, anyways. i felt EVERYTHING that eireann felt. like i said, it was powerful.

it's one of those books that you pick up and you cannot put down until it is completely read. i've read it many times, over and over again. the first time i read it, i read it all in one sitting. then at the end i just sat in a daze and immediately wanted to read it again.

i always go back to this book.

it was an immediate favorite. i'd recommend it to anyone.

it's inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars I Love it.......2006-01-10

This book covers some of the darkest places a human mind can go, and the key to it's success is that it does so without preaching or looking down upon the problems it discusses. From Anorexia to drug use to suicide, this is not light reading. And despite the fact that it is written in poetry, it's not confusing. Eileann begins the book with what seems like the obvious starting point: The onset of her anorexia. She discusses her starvation, her motivation, her multiple trips to the hospital. She does this in a fresh manner, something that feels true, and not like something someone decided anorexia feels like. She also brings another aspect into this book which had a considerable amount of personal appeal to me: Love. A high school boyfriend who she loved, it seems, more than anything. When he finally attempts to take his own life with a gun to the head and fails, she's on the other side of the hospital bed. And that changes everything. She talks about how, for the first time, she cooked for a man, even though she only brought yogurt for herself. And eventually she makes the decision that if he will live, then so will she. This book is essentially a love story, between a girl and a boy, and between a girl and her obsession. It is a dark and haunting read, but I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading such novels. It is truly a work of art.

5 out of 5 stars An Honest Voice.......2005-12-07

"The nurse who's weighed me each / weekday morning for three months finally / speaks. She says Three digits. She says / Good job. And I feel like the particular hog / who's been pointed out at the trough." In our life, we always try to look perfect for someone, whether it be a boy, a friend, or a family member. Eireann Corrigan's memoir "You Remind Me of You" explains her descent into a whirlwind of pain, agony, and heartbreak.
Suffering from a severe case of anorexia and a boyfriend, Daniel, who is recovering from a failed suicide attempt, Eireann discusses these issues through poetry stanzas with a truth that is unlike any other. Her voice is honest and makes me feel like I am experiencing the same things she is. Even though some words are a bit challenging and the poetry verses could be confusing, she speaks with such reality that you can see her pain written on the pages.
The people in this book are real and they portray themselves in a shocking, heart-wrenching manner. This book shows what happens when anorexia takes over your life. Eireann doesn't sugarcoat any of her problems - she wants people to know what she went through and the exact results that came from it. This book can reach out to the age group of 14 and up. Teens need to know the truth and the dangers of just how bad anorexia can get. I have experienced a very minor case of it, and after reading this book I know that I could have never survived if it had gotten that severe.
Another book that relates to teens and self-image issues is "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins. It discusses what can happen when a straight-A, goodie-two-shoes teenage girl transforms into a monster. Eireann is a new writer who has only written two published books. "You Remind Me of You" and "Splintering," which is her first novel. "You Remind Me of You" is definitely a 5-star book. I couldn't put it down when I was reading it. You want to know what happens to Erieann as she continues down her spiral of guilt, depression, and anorexia. You are hooked right away on the first page, as Erienne describes how she feels about herself and her first love, Daniel:
Right now, I weigh eighty-four pounds. My skin is yellowing / again and each morning my hair fills the shower's drain. Later, / I will look back and wonder who let me in that room, but at this minute / I'm remembering our first date, how you told me you couldn't imagine / marrying anyone who wasn't Jewish and I told you / just as earnestly, / as gently, that I couldn't imagine getting through high school / without killing myself. And you said Well that gives us three years.

I would recommend this book to anyone who knows what it's like to deal with a suffering loved one or self-esteem issues. Eireann reaches out to teens and writes about true life events, and how adolescence can be both painful and beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars SOME OF THE *BEST* POETRY I'VE READ!!.......2004-09-15

I first read YOU REMIND ME OF YOU because I loved Billy Merrell's TALKING IN THE DARK so much... and I have to say that these PUSH books are just great. The poetry they have for "kids" just sucks and I hate what they have for adults. But Billy and Eirean are better than of of that.

I hope that Eirean writes MORE BOOKS. I just bought SPLINTERING and hope it is as good as it looks. I love the cover!

Anyway, though. IF you haven't bought this book, buy it already.

Book Description

No one blends humor and heartbreak like Rita Ciresi, whose award-winning novels are lauded as much for their generous wit as for their unflinching honesty. Ciresi’s crowd-pleasing novel Pink Slip captivated readers and critics alike, introducing two utterly unforgettable characters and a love story both bittersweet and comic. Now Ciresi returns to the people and place of that irresistible bestseller in a riotous and rueful, sexy and poignant tale of married love…a novel that asks how two people who fell desperately, passionately, heartbreakingly in love can sustain a second act.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and Lisa Strauss, nee Diodetto, is spending it playing dutiful wife at a $100-a-head benefit instead of in bed with Eben, her hardworking husband of (is it only?) five years. Once upon a time, Lisa, too, was a member of the corporate workaday world--until she fell in love with her boss (Eben), gave birth to a cute but rambunctious son, and gradually morphed into a stay-at-home mom. Somewhere in the mix Lisa also is a writer with ambitions of fame and glory, but those dreams seem to be shrinking, along with her sex life. That is, until a hotshot literary agent shows interest in Lisa’s magnum opus.

Suddenly, she has a pen name, and an excerpt of her book appears in Playboy. In between revising chapters, Lisa is trying--and failing miserably--to get pregnant again. She’s going house-hunting with Cynthia Farquhar, the gorgeous blond Realtor/divorcee who has become her closest confidante (and the object of Eben’s secret fantasies). And she’s wondering if this is all marriage is and can ever be: bonded for life to a man who may never again be the red-hot lover of their pre-marriage union. In fact, he just may turn out to be the conflicted protagonist of her novel--a devoted family man whose moral fiber may not be strong enough to withstand the slings and arrows of lust and temptation. As their lives begin to bizarrely mirror aspects of Lisa’s book…as marital life as they know it teeters on the edge of utter chaos, Lisa and Eben search--apart and together--for the answer to the question that has plagued husbands and wives since time immemorial: Can love survive marriage?

In a wickedly funny, right-on-target look at love and relationships, Rita Ciresi peels back the layers of a marriage with equal doses of hilarity and humanity. Filled with all the zest, zingers, and unexpected surprises of life, Remind Me Again Why I Married You is this uncommonly gifted author at her lusty and liberating best.

5 out of 5 stars Please don't compare it to Pink Slip.......2006-10-08

Tho' it's a sequel, it's not Pink Slip II, and some readers expecting more antics from the colorful secondary characters have been disappointed, judging by earlier reviews (though the agents--stylish realtor Cynthia Farquahar and young hotshot literary agent "Aye Aye"--are great minor characters). The focus is pretty exclusively on Lisa and Ebb and the trials and tribulations of married life, but especially on the conflict between Lisa the (aspiring) novelist and Lisa the disgruntled hausfrau and corporate wife. Without being coyly metafictional, it's also about the dilemma any fiction writer faces in "stealing"--and altering--material from real life. How much of the intesely private Ebb should wind up in Lisa's novel, _I'm Sorry, This is My Life_? The book is also about the way the droll imagination of Lisa-the-novelist recasts real-life events, and deepens and darkens her various discontents.

The events that Lisa is tempted to fictionalize--and that disrupt her writing--are recounted with the verve and wit you can count on from Ciresi: the struggle to get pregnant for a second time, the ordeal of buying a new house, the mundane problem of coping with a sick toddler in winter. The book is very carefully plotted. The alternating Ebb and Lisa sections complement each other nicely. If Ebb doesn't always seem to think and behave in ways you'd expect of a high-level executive at a major pharmaceutical firm, he's a well-rounded, engaging character and a great foil to Lisa.

Bottom line: If you approach this book with too many preconceptions or expectations based on Pink Slip, you might be disappointed. It's a more complex, less outrageous book, with a more ambiguous ending. But Lisa's voice is just as funny and simpatico, it's a winning story, and I found it every bit as enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars Dull, dry and a little depressing.......2006-06-23

The humor is definitely not in the book - reviews and summaries use the word "hilarity" however, I did not come across any situation that I would classify as even funny, not to mention hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed her first novel, Pink Slip, however, this one seemed depressing. The two main characters appeared to have no respect or show any outward love toward each other until the very end of the story. The plot seemed to be very SLOW - the whole story took place in a matter of days, but really, nothing took place in the book. All in all, they bought a house. I would pass on this for better reads elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Dry, boring wanna be.......2006-04-27

This book tries, but fails. The jokes are dry. Humor is dated. I couldn't finsih it. The story had nothing to pull me in. Get Sophie Kinsella instead, you will be much happier.

2 out of 5 stars an average read.......2006-01-28

I think it is hard for me to reconcile the fact that this is the sequel to Pink Slip, which was truly funny and smart. This follows the mariage of Eben and Lisa, but isn't as warm or touching. It is pretty realistic abou thte difficulties of marraige but deosn't show the joys very well. Lisa strikes me as very off-putting in this.

i agree with another reviewer who was just as puzzeld as I about the disappearance of family and friends-I loved those characters (especially Lisa's Mom) in book 1. Without these characters, the book is very neurotic and Lisa frankly seems self-obsessed.

Even with my gripes, I still say Ciresi is a very good author. I kept right on reading the book to see how it would end.

5 out of 5 stars Remind me to read it again !!.......2005-07-20

Forget spies, murders, international conspiracy plots, political thrillers, true kidnap stories...and enter the world of one desperate houswife ( with due credit to the tv soap title).
She is a stay at home mother, a closet writer, a wife who says that she 'plotz'ed' when she has an orgasm.
He is your typical suit, growing older, having fantasies about comely real estate agents, is often constipated and wears awful ties.
In short these are you two average Joe's who lead Average Joe lives...with a lot of humour, pathos and that magic inredient which the author manages to get across - relatability. Anyone who is a post 30's mom, tired corporate wife, desperately trying to conceive, wannabe romance writers ...must read this one !

5 out of 5 stars A Book About Trust, Love and Family.......2006-04-05

This was a start and read until the last page for me last night.

How anyone who has any compassion at all not rate this book as brillantly written is beyond me.

Jodi deals with the abuse of a girl who watched her family and "tribe" killed who fends for herself after the loss of her brother. The Texas Ranger turns her over to a preacher who uses her for his self gains monetarily as a savage as well as selling her for men's pleasure.

I don't like to tell the story when I write my opinion so just let me say that the McLean brothers are all in this book (another reason I liked it so well.). We all know how caring they are and Jodi brings a child into the storyline which is always enjoyable.

There ia suspense, old west gun fights, borderline life and death all in this wonderful book. For me, there was also a big surprise in the plot.

You will be pleased reading this whether you have ever read a book by Jodi or if this is your first.

It is part of a triolgy but as stated above, it can stand alone.

                4 out of 5 stars Big Promises, Little Excitement. ** Grade: B ** .......2005-01-22

From the first page, Jodi Thomas drew me into her story. I'm a sucker for kindness, and TO KISS A TEXAN definitely has it, yet it is a story that boils over with promise but holds little excitement.

Wes McLain has lost everything: his money, his dreams, and his spoiled, rich fiancee. Her bodyguards have beaten the hope of marriage and the illusion of love right out of Wes McLain. Wes has given up on all female attachments until he spots the little creature inside the wooden cage. A small, dirty creature meant for display and entertainment. If it cost him everything, including his life, Wes would not allow this caged woman to suffer one more degradation.

Allie Catlin is a victim to man's cruelty. Allie watched her parents' slaughter, then suffered under the powers of slavery, and finally endured the brutality of religion gone amuck. Now she covers her face, whimpering, would she be the next victim to this mad man entering her cage? She listened, he whispered, and he raised his hand slowly . . . and so the first meeting of Wes McLain and Allie Catlin happened.

This book has definite strengths. Wes is appealing. His honesty, strength, and kindness make him an admirable match for the reserved, cautious Allie. The story itself is nicely paced and Allie's abuse and background provide plenty to keep the story going, but with this author's talent, I wanted just a little more. Yes, Thomas lets her reader see the stars, but I wanted to reach out and touch them.

                5 out of 5 stars Yummy!.......2000-03-21

Ok, so the plot is a bit over the top. The average woman is not going to relate to our heroine based on what she's been through - but she will relate to the feeling of being used and abused and betrayed and generally misunderstood by the world in general. And that's where our heroine shines. She is smart and strong and is not waiting for a man to rescue her - though she desperately needs it. Our hero is [typically] looking for anything but love. However, he finds Allie and can't seem to help himself. These two bond and even though they're unsure of life and where it will lead, they treasure that bond. They are true to it. The plot is above and beyond, the characters and larger than life, but who cares? It works. Now I'm going to read the rest of the series.

2 out of 5 stars I love Jodi Thomas, but not this time.......1999-10-04

I couldn't get into these characters. They were not interesting to me. Clingy, yes.

As a rule, I buy Jodyi's books off the shelf without a review, I have regrets for that decision. I will still read her, but maybe not the next brother in this series.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book for all hopeless romantics!!!.......1999-09-08

Wes is not a man of love until he finds the one thing he cannot live without, Allie. I loved every pulse-pounding moment of it. I was up until five a.m.turning page after page, mezmorized by the story. THIS IS A MUST READ!!! Best romance novel I have ever gotten my hands on. Also it is very easy to think of something to this effect happening to you! In my opinion, this is Jodi Thomas's best work yet. Her work is so detailed that you can practically be the air surrounding the two lovers. Exellent book.
