5 out of 5 stars Truly a book to read all night!.......2001-01-18

Whisper My Name by Roy Martin is a book that yells "Read Me, Read Me!" Once started, it must be finished immediately. The characters become friends and acquaintances from your own past. A tale spun by a master story teller. One caution, read quietly, you don't want some of the characters to hear you breathe.

4 out of 5 stars What a movie this would make!.......1999-07-17

A great novel, Roy Martin. Roy Martin weaves an interesting tapestry of words in Whisper My Name. A love story full of suspense played out in a small southern town, mid-century. The characters are so well depicted you can,t put the book down, and you really feel like you have lived in the South. You must read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for more!.......1999-01-15

The substance of "Whisper My Name" held me captive-I was unable to put it down until I had read the whole thing. The plot and the characters were full of intrigue and kept me guessing throughout. I cannot wait for more fiction by Roy Martin. WRITE ON, MR. MARTIN!

5 out of 5 stars It was a great 1st time novel -- want to read more by him!.......1998-06-14

There was a little of everything -- romance, mystery, a bit of nostalgic history. Couldn't put it down! I hope that Roy Martin writes another one soon -- I'm hungry for more!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific yarn of the not-so-new South.......1998-03-17

Roy Martin's first novel is a wonderful read, told in an exacting voice. It's obvious that Mr. Martin knows his region and its foibles very well. The story line deals with a love lost, and a death unexplained, knitting the two themes closely in a compelling tale. Martin's hero is a crusty loner who perseveres in uncovering the truth, and reconciling that truth with his own life. Martin's use of the language and idiom of the Carolinas is extraordinary. This is a novel not to be missed.

Book Description

The award-winning author of Fallen Angels and Nazareth's Song delivers the third novel in the acclaimed Millwood Hollow series about an unlikely hero and a ragtag trio of orphans in racially segregated 1930s Arkansas. Life is getting more complicated for Reverend Jeb Nubey. Angel, the oldest of his 'adopted' orphan waifs, is now a teenager, and is making his life miserable. Jeb is still keen on pursuing the charming schoolteacher, Fern Coulter, but his old adversary, Oz Mills, is crowding the way. A mysterious crime in the apple orchards has the whole town speculating, and to top it off, an infant girl has been left abandoned on the white preacher's doorstep. The fact that the child is black adds tension to the situation, and Jeb is forced to look at some of his new neighbors in a new light. As Jeb gets caught in the vortex of Depression-era racism, his leadership of the Church in the Dell is tested, as is his ability to keep his growing family safe.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Story.......2005-06-04

Perhaps the reason I enjoy this series so much is because, after 30-plus years of marriage, I understand men. Banjo-playing preacher Jeb Nubey is oft-times clueless when it comes to the growing pains of the three abandoned children he tends, and has had awkward (thus humorous) episodes in his romance with schoolteacher Fern Coulter. But there is a core of compassion and integrity, which cause him to take in the black child on his doorstap, and stand against the intense pressure of some in his all-white congregation at the Church in the Dell. I love Patricia Hickman's descriptions of small-town southern life, and bits of humor. This is a keeper!

2 out of 5 stars Whisper Town.......2005-06-03

As the Depression grips the nation, a young minister finds himself the accidental foster father to three orphans. Adding one more shouldn't be much different, but this child is very different. The baby girl abandoned on his doorstep is not white, but he is. To Jeb that makes no difference, but it makes a huge difference when he begins trying to find her a wet nurse and in his interactions with the town folk. Jeb and his make shift family find themselves plunged into a violent backlash of hatred and racism. Yet, this makes him all the more determined to hold true to his convictions and do right by the baby girl. Unfortunately, the overall book lives up to the era in which it is set, the Depression. Though historically accurrate, it's rather a downer, bringing up reminders of a world most would prefer to forget.

4 out of 5 stars A realistic portrait of small-town America.......2002-10-07

I read this book for a second time after Richard Russo's "Empire Falls" brought it to mind. Although it lacks the epic sweep of Russo's novel, "Whisper My Names" shares a similar setting (small town New England), eccentric and often comical characters, and a narrative informed by American realist traditions.

Hebert perfectly conveys the small-town rivalries, petty grievances, and endearing foibles that afflict the fictional town of Darby, New Hampshire, where two of his previous novels were set. The source of the town's current problems is a proposed shopping mall that (to some) promises new jobs and revenue and (to others) threatens the area's rustic way of life. The novel's characters are motivated by greed, principles, politics, and pretensions--and some of them just don't care. All in all, Darby is a microcosm of American life.

At the center of it all is Chance, a journalist covering the story while seeking the identity of his real father and pursuing Soapy, a young girl whose parentage is equally unclear. But the most memorable character is perhaps Ike Jordan, a churlish fraud and petty criminal from the wrong side of the tracks who has pretensions of becoming one of the town's leaders.

It's a shame this book is out of print. I can only hope that the University Press of New England, which has reprinted Hebert's first two Darby novels, will see its way to adding this book to its list.

                Book Description

In this third self-contained volume of her autobiography, which began with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou moves into the adult world, and the white world as well, as she marries, enters show business, and tours Europe and Africa in Porgy and Bess.

As the book opens, Maya, in order to support herself and her young son, gets a job in a record shop run by a white woman. Suspicious of almost any kindness shown her, she is particularly confused by the special attentions of a young white customer. Soon the relationship grows into love and then marriage, and Maya believes a permanent relationship is finally possible. But it is not to be, and she is again forced to look for work.

This time she finds a job as a dancer in a sleazy San Francisco bar. Her remarkable talent, however, soon brings her attention of a different kind, and before long she is singing in one of the most popular nightclubs on the coast. From there, she is called to New York to join the cast of Porgy and Bess, which is just about to begin another tour abroad.

The troupe's joyous and dramatic adventure through Italy, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Egypt becomes the centerpiece of Singin' and Swingin'. This remarkable portrayal of one of the most exciting and talented casts ever put together, and of the encounters between these larger-than-life personalities and audiences who had rarely seen black people before, makes a hilarious and poignant story. The excitement of the journey -- full of camaraderie, love affairs, and memorable personalities -- is dampened only by Maya's nagging guilt that she has once again abandoned the person she loves most in life, her son.

Back home, and driven close to suicide by her guilt and concern, she takes her son with her to Hawaii, where she discovers that devotion and love, in spite of forced absence, have the power to heal and sustain.

As always, Maya Angelou's writing is charged with that remarkable sense of life and love and unique celebration of the human condition that have won her such a loyal following.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A More Mature but Still Naive Singin' and Swingin' Angelou.......2006-08-02

SINGIN' & SWINGIN', the third installment in Angelou's autobiographical series of books, pleased me more than did the first two, or perhaps I should say that it is less uncomfortable to read than are its predecessors. I must confess that, by the time I finished Angelou's second book, her nearly constant expression of prejudice against Caucasian Americans was becoming tedious.

One finds a very thick thread of bias and racial distrust in both CAGED BIRD and in GATHER TOGETHER, and that thread is made even more annoying by the fact that the many instances of abuse and betrayal that Angelou relates in those first two books are all perpetrated not by Whites but by her fellow Blacks, yet that race receives none of her blanket condemnation. Granted, I suppose that, had I lived as a Black in Stamps, Arkansas in the 1930s and '40s, I too would have copious reasons to distrust and dislike the entire White population of the United States, yet the barrage of vituperation directed against that population does become repetitive and predictable, two traits that an author should normally avoid in a book, the justification behind them notwithstanding. SINGIN' & SWINGIN' is not devoid of Angelou's racial prejudices by any means, but it is not so heavily laden with them, and they are not so intrusive as to overwhelm the reader.

Two other targets of criticism arise in Angelou's first three books: her veracity and her own culpability for some of the blows she has described. As to the first, the historical accuracy of these books, I have mentioned in another review that I find most unusual the fact that Angelou, a dropout from the formal educational system, habitue of bars and sometime prostitute and brothel owner, actually plunged into books by authors such as Jane Eyre and Dostoevski for pleasure. Nonetheless, the fact that she writes of having done so tells us something of her self concept and desire for fulfillment and meaning in her life. In SINGIN' & SWINGIN', she writes of her success as a professional singer and dancer, of touring Europe as a cast member of the musical "Porgy and Bess," and of interacting with many "big name" performers. Did she actually "rub shoulders" with all the notables mentioned in her book?

She is re-creating events from years past, and it may be that we are seeing some of her dreams as well as her actions, but what of that? Are not our dreams as much a part of our history as are our recordable acts? And are not all history books, written as they are by victors rather than by the vanquished, slanted by the world view of their authors? Besides, a good story usually benefits from some judicious embellishment. I find no quibble with Angelou's veracity, for I do not expect a word-for-word recollection of some conversation with a colleague decades ago but rather a retelling of that conversation that gives the reader a feel for the way it sounded in Angelou's ears.

The third target, her own culpability for her treatment by others and for the guilt that she herself generates, is purely and simply inapplicable to a review of the book. The reader may feel strongly that Angelou had no right or privilege to seek freedom by touring Europe when she left her young son to the care of others and that she fully deserves the feeling of guilt that she describes. Another reader may feel that she was stupidly careless in her relationships with the Greek purser on her ship and with the ship's doctor. Indeed, even though the Angelou we find in this book is more mature than are her younger incarnations in the previous books, she can still be seen as incredibly naive and even foolish in numerous situations. There will be those who criticize the book because of these self-depictions. However, we must believe that this is the way Angelou saw herself at that stage of her life, and, while the reader may at times want to shake some sense into her, he must not allow this to affect his judgement of the book. Indeed, Angelou paints a very clear picture of herself--as she remembers herself--so, while we may be occasionally annoyed with the picture, we cannot fault the skill of the artist, for the picture is quite clear and unambiguous.

I do not find SINGIN' & SWINGIN' to be a "stand-alone" book. For the reader to understand and appreciate Angelou's situation in this book, he needs to have read I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS and GATHER TOGETHER IN MY NAME first. We should consider her autobiographical books mere chapters from a larger tome, and we need to read those chapters in order. Of course, having once begun this imaginary book, the reader will want to finish it, and I am looking forward to beginning the next "chapter" in short order.

Oh, one final thought: Ever wonder where Angelou's last name originated and how she "morphed" from Marguerite Johnson into Maya Angelou? The earlier books explained the "Maya," but this one explains the "Angelou." It's a neat revelation.

                5 out of 5 stars Candid autobiography........2002-11-05

Maya Angelou tells us without restraint how she crawled out of the hell of her youth years to become a star dancer.
Vivid decription of the situation of the African Americans and their mentality in the middle of last century.
Evocative language, sharp, intelligent and fluent.
                A book to recommend.

                5 out of 5 stars overall good.......2002-04-06

I think that the book was very interesting in the beginning and the end, because I like the way it started out like she was shy about her entertainment career. And at the end it was very dramatic about how she was about to kill herself and her son as well because her life wasn't going the way she wanted it to go. Also, how the white community despised her and didn't accept the person that she was. This book really caught my eye, even though I am a young adult. I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults of all ages because it really is an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars great follow up, but..........2002-01-20

this third installment of angelou's sutobiography is just as well written and interesting as her first two. however, i have become completely baffled with ine aspect of the novel. in the first two books, her son's name was guy. suddenly, in "singin and swingin..." her son is referred to as clyde! if anyone knows why this is so, please share your explanation. it would be highly appreciated! and whatever his name is, still a good read.

                5 out of 5 stars Gracious.......2000-07-27

A very pleasant read. There's nothing like traveling Europe and Africa by way of Angelou's memory and experience (if you can't get there personally). This autobiography covers the time Maya spent with the Porgy and Bess opera. I'm always amazed at the elegant, graceful and poetic way the author tells her life story. I'm even more amazed at how those same characteristics are exhibited in her speech, her stature, and her aura. This is a quick read that is sure to inspire. Angelou has a way of sharing wisdom and experience in a manner that connects with most any reader. Add this one to your list and be sure to check out some of her audiotapes as well. The only thing better than reading Maya's work, is listening to Maya read her work.
