5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, memorable landscape.......2005-05-25

This was truly one of the most beautiful novels I've ever read and I would not hesitate to call it my favorite book. The title is taken from an excerpt from an art book describing techniques of landscape painting and that is exactly what the novel is: a richly, landscaped view of life. Maxwell's imagery leaves the reader feeling such a part of the world of Elm Street that it is truly heartbreaking to leave it and return to the present. Maxwell's use of light and shadow is outstanding and even the slightest and most obscure of characters (as well as inanimate objects and even insects) are crafted with intimate details. Everyone seems to have voice, color and emotion. There is an artistic term called chiaroscuro which describes the contrasts of shading of light and dark within a painting and that term encapsulates the book as well. Maxwell's characters are rendered clearly, but without moral judgment - there is no right and wrong or black and white. In it's place are a thousand variations of emotional color. While not a novel of action - admittedly not much of great consequence actually takes place - this is a novel of intense beauty and outstanding characterization. The images and emotions evoked in the novel live on in the imagination.

I grew up in the American Midwest, 80 years after Maxwell. But in his books I feel myself condensed and distilled, and all the work and love and sorrow of the world brought to life, as intimate as a family portrait in a drawer.

Maxwell quotes an Italian painter in the epigraph to this book. I am reminded of a painting, too: Mary holds the dying Jesus in her arms, while behind her dozens of 15th-century Florentines carry out their lives, bartering and joking and courting each other. I cried, looking at it. Maxwell's work is so piercing because the lives of each of his characters affects but does not contain within it the lives of all the others. A woman's dying son is the whole world's grief, but first of all it is hers alone. In a world in which lives and ideas are generated and immediately discarded, I am grateful for the presence of Maxwell's words in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Writing From Another Time of Another Time.......2001-05-20

The world is the less for the death of William Maxwell at age 91 last year. His prose is restrained and precise. He knows the use of silence on the page; his dialogue convinces both in the words and the spaces between the words. I read in a profile of Maxwell in the New Yorker that he wrote this novel's numerous short chapters by deciding which characters hadn't talked together for a while in the story, and getting them together. I liked that thought. Whether true or not, in reading this novel one enters two different times -- 1948 when Maxwell wrote it and the 1912 Midwest he recreates. I can't imagine something this quiet and directed being written in these frenetic times. It is a wander through memory, but -- thanks to Maxwell's careful rendering -- better than memory for it is sharp, accurate and sure.

Still, I can't give this novel a five star rating. As much as I like Maxwell, his writing and the obvious care he took to get the language exactly right, a craftsman at work, the key characters don't really convince me. Nora is much too shallow to captivate, confuse or immobilize someone like Austin. Meanwhile, Austin himself is, in some parts of the novel, too smart, too dogged in the flashback of his pursuit of Martha, to also be as easily duped or unfeeling as he is drawn in others.

Here's a final recommendation, though -- when the final scene arrives for each character, and they pass through the novel for the last time, one cares about each one and what happens in the unknown next that extends beyond the last page.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best depictions of the interiors of marriage.......2001-03-20

Maxwell's Time Will Darken It is among the most rewarding and satisfying reading experiences I have ever had. His characters are wonderfully made. With sparse style and grace he captures the quiet spaces of day-to-day living, the in-between areas in which lives unfold. The novel is also among the best depictions of the interiors of marriage I have encountered, with the intricacies of the interatctions between Nora and Austin, awaiting their second child and besieged by the visitation of distant relatives, rendered simply and movingly. A fine, fine novel.

                      Book Description

In today's postmodern world, believers more than ever before are faced with a host of objections to Christianity. Expert apologist Paul Copan describes these objections as ''anti-truth'' claims and with ''How Do You Know You're Not Wrong'' he provides a helpful resource with thorough, biblical answers to such regularly used objections as: ''Whatever works for you''; ''Just as long as it makes you happy''; ''All religions are basically the same''; ''Christianity is anti-semitic''. At the end of each chapter, he provides practical and easy-to-share summary points to help readers intelligently and effectively answer the challenges of their non-Christian friends and neighbors.

                      4 out of 5 stars Crypto-Mormon?.......2007-01-26

This book is a wonderful addition to "True For you, But Not For Me" and "That's Just Your Interpretation." And kudos to the cover designers for keeping that ingenious design of the crazy road signs that was used on the second book. The first book's cover is funny in its own way, but for illustrating the idea that all roads do not lead to Mount Fuji (much less Mount Zion), the crazy road signs is a stroke of genius.

Being the third in a series, Copan has the freedom to deal with many of the side questions that were not covered in the first books. Get the other books if you want the basic questions, and do this one for the deeper and the side questions.

I thought the discussion on the mind-body problem was insightful, and Copan rightly fingers Descartes as main culprit in the miscommunication. The discussion in chapters 3-5 on the nature of scientism versus science was even better. We are not dealing with science (which is merely correlated data), but scientism (not only an assumed philosophical framework for managing data, but also an outlook on ethics, economics, politics, and includes a robust social-political-academic agenda).

On thing I would have liked so see in the discussion is Thomas Aquinas's statement in his Five Ways. Back in the 1200's, Aquinas pointed out that one possible argument against God was naturalism: "It is superfluous to suppose that what can be accounted for by a few principles has been produced by many. But it seems that everything we see in the world can be accounted for by other principles, supposing God did not exist. For all natural things can be reduced to one principle which is nature."

His reply was not reductionism as used by Copan (53), but the obvious teleology in the world: "Since nature works for a determinate end under the direction of a higher agent, whatever is done by nature must needs be traced back to God, as to its first cause." Everyone believes in ecology or the "Circe of Life." Well, where did this come from? As he aaerts, if animals have rights, where did they come from?

I was let down with the discussion on Abraham. Isaac was an obvious symbol of Christ ("he received him in a figure" Heb. 11:17-19), but Copan never mentions this. His explanation is Jewish, but not Christian. Abraham was being taught a vital lesson: faith in the Atonement.

The section on the Fall of Adam was an eye-popper. Copan's view of the Fall of Adam is essentially the position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Here are the data:

                      COPAN:

                      * "Our deeply sinful condition should be understood in terms of damage/consequences rather than guilt reckoned to all of us as the result of Adam's sin. Otherwise, what do we make of those who die in infancy or who are mentally retarded?" (202)

                      * (Quoting Gordon Lewis and Bruce Demarest) "None will suffer the execution of the penalty who not themselves responsibility sinned." (205)

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

                      * "We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression." (Articles of Faith 2)

                      * "Hence came the saying abroad among the people, that the Son of God hath atoned for original guilt, wherein the sins of the parents cannot be answered upon the heads of the children, for they are whole from the foundation of the world." (Moses 6:54)

                      * "But little children are alive in Christ, even from the foundation of the world; if not so, God is a partial God, and also a changeable God, and a respecter to persons; for how many little children have died without baptism! Wherefore, if little children could not be saved without baptism, these must have gone to an endless hell. Behold I say unto you, that he that supposeth that little children need baptism is in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity; for he hath neither faith, hope, nor charity; wherefore, should he be cut off while in the thought, he must go down to hell." (Moroni 8:10-14)

                      * "Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." (2 Nephi 2:25)

In 1974, Truman Madsen wrote a paper called "Are Christians Mormon?" (BYU Studies, Vol. 15, No. 1, p.73). He showed that many churches are slowly modifying their doctrines. The shocking thing is that they are looking more and more like Mormonism. Maybe this idea needs to be revisited.

3 out of 5 stars More subjective picking & choossing.......2006-09-16

This is an excellent book for anyone who confronts today's Evangelicals. It's a good demonstration of the expected subjective selection between which Biblical passages are chosen to be re-interpreted and which are held to be unquestionably true as-is. Mr. Copan does an excellent job of stressing that certain difficult passages (e.g. Jacob's sacrifice of Isaac) must be viewed in terms of the environments in which they were created: locations, point in times, and overall contexts in which they appear. Unfortunately, for Biblical passages which support his particular prejudices, he does no more than assert that they are self-evidently true and must be taken as-is. Hopefully, anyone reading this book will be able to see the ironic light in which this casts Evangelicalism, and will go on to view ALL Biblical passages with regards to the evironments in which they were created.

5 out of 5 stars Responding to objections.......2006-04-27

Paul Copan is a rising star in Christian apologetics and philosophy. He has written a number of excellent titles defending the Christian faith, on both popular and more academic levels. This volume follows two of his earlier works, namely, True For You, But Not True For Me (1998) and That's Just Your Interpretation (2001).

In all three volumes he raises common objections to the faith and answers them with wisdom, learning and clarity. In this volume, he examines three categories of objections: the nature of truth, the broad area of science and scientism, and objections to specific biblical and theological claims.

In the first section, for example, he devotes a chapter to pragmatism, the claim that what is true is what works. Copan offers three strengths of this view, but then offers eleven problems with the position. And these shortcomings are profound. Lying, for example, may "work", but does that make its right, or true?

In section two he lists eight common objections, centered on the supposed clash between science and faith. In these chapters he deals with a number of related themes. Chief among them is the way in which science can tend to overstep its bounds.

Thus Copan distinguishes between science (a helpful discipline when kept in its proper place) and scientism (the idea that science speaks to all truth, and what is not covered by science is not true). The latter is a philosophical position, not testable by the very tenets of science. It is a presupposition that itself is not empirically verifiable.

While science rightly studies the natural world, scientism seeks to say the natural world is all there is: only matter matters. The truth is, as Copan demonstrates, there are many areas of knowledge that go beyond scientific study. The proper domain of science is nature, but we need more than science to understand what may lie beyond nature.

In the third section Copan looks at common complaints about the Christian faith, such as the idea that the church excluded or suppressed certain texts from the New Testament. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown of course makes such claims. But as Copan demonstrates, the early church leaders did not determine which books would be in or out, they merely acknowledged the authority of existing books.

The various Gnostic gospels that sprang up several centuries after Christ were all seen to be spurious and untrustworthy. Texts like the Gospel of Thomas were clearly at odds with the apostolic writings, and reflected a much different worldview. They also appear on the scene much later.

Thus on a number of fronts, various challenges to the faith are presented and assessed. As with the two previous volumes, these objections are capably dealt with. Not all readers will be convinced by every argument, but at least it becomes clear that there are good answers out there to the host of criticisms leveled against Christianity.

**** In a world where it often seems like the only right some vocal people are willing to grant Christians is the right to remain silent, it is easy to begin to wonder, "am I wrong to believe?" Addressing this question with solid reasons why you are not wrong to believe and what makes Christianity logical, this book will give you the confidence to deal with a world in which Christans are resident aliens. How do we know we have a soul and are more than animals? What about the strange things in the Old Testament that often seem bizarre and harsh? Did a lot of books get left out of the Bible? The answers to these questions and more will give you surety that not only are you, the Christian not wrong, but you are right. ****

WHAT WENT WRONG WITH AMERICA … AND HOW TO FIX IT: RECLAIMING THE POWER THAT RIGHTFULLY BELONGS TO YOU

                      By Darrell Ankarlo

In What Went Wrong with America … And How to Fix It, radio host Darrell Ankarlo identifies the key elements of how our society is rotting from within, mostly due to an uninformed and uninvolved citizenry that has allowed it to happen. Providing inspiration from the Founding Fathers and modern American movements, he shows how he has used the platform of his radio show to inform his listeners and encourage them to get involved in their communities.

In order to encourage citizens to use the power they already have, he provides a practical road map for ordinary Americans to follow in making their voices heard. He equips readers to change the pattern of disengagement by utilizing broadcast and print media to spread their messages, organize rallies and protests, and become involved in the political system. He encourages people to engage in effective letter-writing and e-mail campaigns to rally support for their ideas, even to the point of running for elected office if necessary.

Find out how one talk-radio host who loves his country and its troops organized a massive demonstration of support for the American military and sparked a nationwide movement of pro-American, pro-troop rallies. These achievements were accomplished by average Americans who took the time to make a difference. What Went Wrong with America … And How to Fix It provides the tools necessary for anyone who cares about the future of the nation and wants to make a big difference on the local, state, and national level.

                      1 out of 5 stars It's TERR-ible...........2006-04-05

Ankarlo practically advocates execution of anyone who disagrees with his viewpoints. He especially hates Jews, Catholics, Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics. And he exploits his son's service in the military for his own financial gain. His book is an advertisement to buy his book, advising readers that they can reach idealogical nirvana if they sleep in a bathtub full of his books.

Why do you hate America so much, Mr. Ankarlo? Why do you want to burn the City of Boston to the ground? Every time you open your mouth, George W. Bush weeps. Every time you congratulate yourself for your son's military service, McCain cringes. Every time you mention your book on your show, Cheney nearly has another heart attack. And, yes, when you espouse your "the Republic must fall" viewpoints, even Ann Coulter blushes.

Save us all the trouble and stay in your bunker without a laptop - so you CAN'T write another piece of garbage.

This is the most detailed and highly researched (and sourced) book I have ever read! I listen to Darrell Ankarlo daily on 570 KLIF in DFW. I'm glad to see that his book is of the same great quality that his daily morning show is. Darrell has changed my life over the course of the last few years. He has opened my eyes to what is going on around me, and is a constant motivator to me and the rest of his audience. Darrell leads by example and encourages others to lead their charge as well. I truly believe the "nay-sayers" whom I see commenting on this book just don't get it!

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR EVERY AMERICAN.......2005-01-11

This book will open your eyes as to what is really wrong with America and give you ideas as to how you can fix it on your own. Truly inspirational you will laugh, cry, and cheer while reading this book. Give a listen to the web cast of Mr. Ankarlo off the KLIF site if you need an indication of what is in the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Conservatives.......2004-12-06

For anyone who truly wants to make a difference in this country, are concerned about those who are eroding the American way life, and want to stand up for what is right, this book is a must read. I just read it and feel empowered as a single citizen to be able do something! Darrell Ankarlo says everything that has been on my mind for years but I couldn't effectively put into words and didn't know what to do about it. Now I do. This book has given me a reason to stand up and be counted in a more visible way to save the country I love from those who would tear down the moral fiber on which it was built. It will shock you, encourage you, and even bring you to tears in places. But it goes beyond that; it gives detailed, practical ways to use your talents to help this great nation.
If conservatives want to save a rapidly deteriorating country, they must get involved--and quickly. This book tells them how. There is power in one person with conviction standing up for what is right; even more so if two, or three, or a thousand stand together. Please read it--and get involved!

Now onto my review of the book...
I just finished reading Mr. Ankarlo's book and I am grateful he wrote it! This book opened my eyes to things I was not aware of; you know the kind of things that you should have known and afterwards kind of say to yourself "well duh". This book is insightful, resourceful and provoking; causing the reader to be very aware of the need to stand up and make a difference while providing a plethora of contact information and resources to empower the reader into the action it provokes. Great job Darrell! Great job to all who make a difference! Great job to all those who serve and have served to keep this nation free, THANK YOU! And God bless the USA!!!

This book was ok! Although I felt that the main character Rhea was really naive to have put up with some of the things that happened to her in this book! Good read but I would have rather gotten it from the library!

Toschia writes with such a vivid picture being painted and basically allows her characters to just be as real as this world can get!

The book was good but made you wonder how dumb are we women and how gullible we are when we grave attention and love. Rhea seems like she has it all together but she doesnt and due to the factthat she wants to feel loved and appreiciated she falls into the traps of a man she thought was "THE ONE" and turns out to be something "TOTALLY" opposite. You will follow Rhea in this story and discover the trail of deciption and lies this man has spread like a disease. Also the disfunctional family he was sprawn from may be the reason why he is the way he is. So I leave you with this men only do what we women allow them to do.

5 out of 5 stars Simon makes learning science fun for the young reader.......2004-05-25

When I was a child, I was drawn to books of science fact. I can only wish Seymour Simon had been publishing his excellent science-oriented books for young readers back when I was growing up. Science is just so fascinating that I have trouble understanding any child's reluctance to embrace it, especially when there are wonderful little books such as The Dinosaur Is the Biggest Animal That Ever Lived and Other Wrong Ideas You Thought Were True (how's that for a lengthy title?). Expose a child to this type of reading material, and you will do much to encourage the young scholar within him or her.

Books such as this provide youngsters with a great way to stump their parents; how exciting it must be for a precocious child to actually teach his/her parents a fact every now and again. This is a good thing, for it only enriches the learning opportunity available to the youngster. Parents should not be afraid to admit they don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of everything. When a child asks a question a parent can't answer, that parent is provided with a golden opportunity to share the fun of learning directly with the child.

This book features some 29 short and illustrated chapters, each one based on a common science question and the wrong answer that has somehow established itself in the public consciousness. Of course, by the time one becomes an adult, he/she has usually learned that the blue whale of today is actually much larger than the largest of dinosaurs, that the sky generally appears blue because of light refraction, that sharks can indeed attack in shallow water, that chocolate doesn't give you pimples, that lightning can indeed strike the same place twice, etc. Still, an adult can also learn from the knowledge contained in this book - I certainly did. I now know, for instance, that quicksand is actually twice as buoyant as water and that a person can literally float on his/her back and push or pull his way to safety. I was also rather amazed to learn that there are over one million earthquakes (the vast majority of them quite insignificant) each year across the globe, which equates to two earthquakes per minute.

There is no real order to the topics here, but of course each one deals with a scientific fact and popular misconception. The illustrations by Giulio Maestro do much to increase the appeal of the book, and Simon's text is a great fit for the curiosity and intellect of young minds.

Outstanding book. Barra is a very smart columnist who understands several different sports. A few of his arguments are silly (the running game is important in the NFL, for example), but 95% of the book is on target. Well worth the price.

Everytime I hear somebody complain about how ballplayers today play for the money while old-timers played for the love of the game, I want to give them this book. The same is true for whenever somebody complains that high salaries drive up ticket prices. Those are two of the many myths that the author debunks in this book. The author backs up his arguments with plenty of historical evidence and presents well-reasoned cases for why many commonly accepted things about sports just aren't true. I don't agree with everything in the book and I doubt most sports fans will, but it's still a good read. The author shows he is very knowlegable and writes with a great deal of authority about several different sports, which is no easy task.
