5 out of 5 stars Very nice read.......2005-11-08

Michener offers some compelling insights into what he considers to be the most critical problems facing our country today,it may seem simplistic at times, but life is simple if you let it be.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but definately biased.......2005-06-18

In the beginning chapter of "A Noble Land" by James Michener, I thought I might actually enjoy the book. I found it interesting to read about his life experiences, such as his living conditions and the elections he's participated in. However, starting with the next chapter, I found my self completely bored. Not only was it like torture to continue on with the book, I thought that it was based on his biased opinion as an older conservative man. Also I thought that his opinions were outdated. His views on current family situations, education and our country in general were very harsh and didn't show his alleged "patriotism." As a high school student and a child of divorced parents, I thought that he was really steriotyping my entire generation and the United States in general. I was really appalled by some his remarks, like his recommendation to allow teenagers aged 14 and over to drop out of school legally.

Although I definately didn't agree with most of his points in the first 150 pages of the book, it improved towards the end when he actually made some valid points and thoroughly supported them.

Overall I thought that the first part of the book, was pretty much worthless, but it did make me think and reaffirm my some of my opinions that he disagreed with. But several parts are definatley worth reading (like the first chapter and chapter 8 to the end).

5 out of 5 stars MICHENER'S VISION AND HOPES FOR AMERICA.......2003-10-30

James A. Michener endeared himself to readers everywhere with books like Hawaii, Tales of the South Pacific, Centennial, and Chesapeake. His writing style and concise, comprehensive research was at the foundation of books that have become American treasures.

In This Noble Land Michener takes a different approach, though one not entirely unexpected from an author who, it is evident, loved America deeply. The book takes a hard but, I feel, honest view of America, where it has been, what it is now (the view of things in 1999) and where Michener believes it is headed.

Michener addresses the political problems facing us and what it will take, in his view, for Americans to continue their past record of greatness. He speaks of morals, of ethics and of integrity--from the standpoint of what we were as a country to the backsliding nation that we have become.

In my favorite chapter of the book Michener tackles very eloquently the problem of America's love affair with professional sports, the unfortunate decline of the morals of many sports figures, their poor example to America's youth and the sorry fact that we would, as a nation, gladly pay top dollar for tickets to any sporting event while refusing to acknowledge the plight of America's poor.

Taken all in all, whether you like This Noble Land or not will depend entirely upon how closely your views agree with those of the author. For me, I felt that Michener's vision as expounded in This Noble Land was 20/20. The book is already four years old at this review but I feel that it will have merit for decades to come. Hopefully we will have the sense as Americans to change things for the better.

5 out of 5 stars A True USA Patroit.......2002-12-24

THIS NOBLE LAND My Vision For American by James A. Michener

Mr. Michner was a true USA Patriot for his whole life and died a true USA patriot. I could not sum up his work for the USA any better than that. James was 90 years old when he wrote this dream as to what he wanted his country the USA to become starting from his death when he wrote this his last book. What this book really is an open letter to Americans with the blueprint of a utopia, which he realized, was not possible with humans and their different inspirations, but he continued to have hope right to his last breath.

The things that he writes about has been achievable and he gave a blueprint to use to achieve his suggestions. Considering the situation we are in now his ideas would have been good if implemented. They should be implemented if our `elite' permits it. Our elite is now is the small number of people who now belong to the moneyed part of our society. These people have 80 percent of the wealth. We have reached the stage of our society where the money is king and the elite, which have the money, are leading us.

Money used to be used for cover over our heads and food. It is now power and elects our leaders, good or bad. Before that we elected our leaders for their ability as a hunter or provider. Then there was a relative short time when we had a democracy where elected them by votes of who we thought could lead us down the road to freedom and prosperity. Now our leaders talk a good democracy, but their actions are something else.

Michener starts out by explaining our tax system and provides suggestions for replacement after telling us how bad it is. He starts by telling his submitted tax declaration took 48 pages, this was in 1995. American tax declarations really haven't changed much since then. If anything they are more complex now. Read his thoughts on taxes they will be eye opener.

How do we get work for everyone in American? We are not headed in that direction now. Mr. Michener has a few ideas some have been tried in the past by countries in the world with varying degrees of success. Mr. Michener has put a lot of thought into this.

I want to quote Mr. Michener here, "Our government must stop passing income tax laws and other laws whose only purpose is to siphon even more wealth into the hands of those already rich while penalizing those at the lower end of the economic scale."

For any kind of `trickle down' system to work the elite have to give more to the humans who need it and will spend it on food and clothing to prevent a revolution of those who are not participating in the American bounty. And these are the people who spend and cause our economy to grow.

Mr. Michener addresses the condition of our society and where the blacks fit in. This is really worth reading for all colors. He is dreaming about a classless society.

He addresses large company and their employees, but he was not privy to our `evil' system which has came to the attention of our government now. Large and small companies were or are stealing from stockholder and employees both equally and sharing in the downward movement of these companies. The government is acting `very slowly' to correct these problems.

Mr. Michener, who taught in grade school up to post doctorate level in the university, was very interested in this subject. He went to elementary school when the children said a `pledge of allegiance to the USA' before they started class. We have gone on `dumbing down' our children in the last few years in spite is Mr. Michener's warning. I cannot write all of his recommendations here. Read his book!

I am running out of space and time, but Mr. Michener's comments on the USA family should be read and digested.

His health care section should be read by everyone in the government that has anything to do with the health laws. He put a lot of thought into how to improve our system, which is getting worse it, could. Most of the western countries have better health systems than ours. Why is this, just the smell of money?

This is getting to long to hold attention so I will close for with the recommendation to read, THIS NOBLE BOOK, MY VISION FOR AMERICA, by Mr. Michener, whose last thought was for the United States of America.

4 out of 5 stars informative; revealing.......1998-11-05

It is hard to take issue with a man who is so deadly with pen and paper as Mr. Michener. His views are so compelling I find it difficult to counter them when in disagreement. Although basically liberal in output, he is by no means "knee-jerk" nor "tax and spend"; indeed I would surmise to say that he probably voted for as many Republicans in his lifetime as he did Democrats. This book is not a typical Michener work; instead it is a simplistic yet well thought out essay on the problems we all face and ignore. Perhaps his failing health affected his writing; or perhaps his aim was to keep it concise for the masses; either way I found myself wanting more. However, all in all an informative work that should be read. Ideal for introspective teens who realize there is a world around them. Should be read with "The World is my Home" to gain a better understanding of his views in later life. Again, highly recommended for insightful teens and young adults.

Book Description

What happens to independent thought in a socialized health system? This question is superimposed on the action in NOBLE VISION, a gripping love story between Nicole Hudson, a tragically injured ballerina, and Dr. David Lang, an innovative neurosurgeon who is determined to save her with a revolutionary new treatment that is prohibited by the state. Romantic thriller with philosophical depth.

5 out of 5 stars A cure for "Sicko".......2007-08-13

Since there is so much ado about Michael Moore's latest film Sicko that seems to essentially call for socialized medicine, I think people should know about an alternative medium that demonstrates just how evil government control of medicine really is.

This is the best book that does so and is Gen LaGreca's first novel and, boy, does it pack quite a punch! I can't wait for other books written by her.

The book takes place in the near future where surgeon Doctor David Lang takes a liking for a ballet dancer named Nicole Hudson whom he takes the time to see perform so Lang can escape the trappings of his marriage that is on the rocks. Lang goes so far as to send flowers to Nicole in which he is known to her as The Phantom.

As it turns out, Nicole gets seriously injured and ends up losing her eye sight and Lang decides to treat her with an experimental surgery he has developed that is deemed illegal by CareFree, New York State's socialized medicine program.

In the book, La Greca points to, based on extensive research she did, the onerous rules and regulations doctors, especially surgeons, have to submit to while the system itself penalizes the honest, dedicated doctors as means of trying to control costs.

It is also a novel of how humans struggle to survive under the grip of collectivism.

LaGreca seems to draw mainly from The Fountainhead since I noticed many similarities between it and Noble Vision, respectfully. I am sure if Ayn Rand were alive today she would have kind words for the book and its author. Noble Vision also deserves to be immortalized on film too. Yes, its that good.

If you want a look at the reality of socialized medicine and want an excellent, well-written novel that is much a love story as it is a book on philosophy read Noble Vision. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars "An odd thing called integrity." (p. 265).......2007-06-04

When I finished Chapter 1, I knew that LaGreca was a talent; when I finished Chapter 3, I knew that this book was a masterwork. Any criticism is due to her philosophy because her craft is impeccable. Yes, as a first novel, "Noble Vision" is impressive. It has all the anti-collectivism of The Fountainhead, all of the plot-twists of 24 - Seasons 1-5, and just enough of "The Lifetime Channel" to keep the ladies interested.

This book sends chills up your spine. The government program CareFree is really a boilerplate for all extant government health care programs, plus the proposed HillaryCare from 1993. We need books like this to illustrate what would happen is such a chimera were ever to appear in this country. For background, read Chapter 30 in The Voice of Reason: Essays in Objectivist Thought (The Ayn Rand Library, Vol V).

Thoreau said:

"For government is an expedient by which men would fain succeed in letting one another alone; and, as has been said, when it is most expedient, the governed are most let alone by it. Trade and commerce, if they were not made of India rubber, would never manage to bounce over the obstacles which legislators are continually putting in their way; and, if one were to JUDGE THESE MEN WHOLLY BY THE EFFECTS OF THEIR ACTIONS, AND NOT PARTLY BY THEIR INTENTIONS, they would deserve to be classed and punished with those mischievous persons who put obstructions on the railroads." (Civil Disobedience and Other Essays (Dover Thrift Editions), 2).

I love the names, all of which are double entendres: CareFree is not carefree, nor is it caring and it is certainly not free. Malcolm Burrow can be burrowing, and he is also a burro. And he is defiantly "mal." David is, of course, the giant slayer.

LaGreca is a sorceress of images. She reworks the legends of Pandora, Prometheus, and Phaeton Metamorphoses (Penguin Classics), plus has the evil characters corrupt the story of Abraham and Isaac (Fear and Trembling (Penguin Great Ideas)). And on page 26, she uses the image of mixing good cognac with bad coffee as a springboard for a discussion on the half-and-half approach to things. Does the cognac improve the coffee, or does the coffee taint the cognac? A worthy successor to the paradoxes of Zenos and Buridan's Burro.

I see two flaws--David Lang is physically violent (pages 52, 176, 256, 259, 269-270, 303). In some cases, such as in the middle of surgery this is justified, but in other cases, he comes across as a bully. David should not be a Goliath.

Secondly, David cheats on Marie. There are no bones about this. Even thought hey have fallen out of love, and fallen away philosophically, this does not negate their marriage covenant. They must follow their hearts, but also follow just laws.

OF course this is the book's key issue: What do we do with unjust laws? One answer is to be an Antigone (Dover Thrift Editions). But Thomas Paine offered another solution:

"I have always held it an opinion (making it also my practice) that it is better to obey a bad law, making use at the same time of every argument to show its errors and procure its repeal, than forcibly to violate it; because the precedent of breaking a bad law might weaken the force, and lead to a discretionary violation, of those which are good." (Common Sense, The Rights of Man and Other Essential Writings of Thomas Paine (Signet Classics), 262).

A book like this should be essential reading for teenagers. They need to know that the world is governed by inner circles, cliques, cabals, factions, and secret combinations (read The Federalist Papers (Signet Classics) # 10; The Weight of Glory "The Inner Ring."). This book exposes the participants for who they are: shallow people desperately in need of affirmation form their peer gallery. They will do anything in order to be recognized by other people, including selling their souls. The question for the youth is: Which side of the circle will you be? Inside, or outside?

This is a question for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book and a great read.......2007-05-31

As other reviewers have noted, this is in the tradition of Ayn Rand. Other writers that Ms. Lagreca's writing skill and philosophy bring to mind include Kay Nolte Smith The Watcher,Elegy for a Soprano, F Paul Wilson Lanague Chronicles and Terry Goodkind Faith of the Fallen (Sword of Truth, Book 6).

If you enjoy a spellbinding story with a serious lesson in philosophy and economics don't miss this book. It was difficult to put down when trivial pursuits like work interfered with my reading.

Like Smith, Wilson and Goodkind, the serious education is part of the story. You don't have to wade through long winded lectures. This book is a tremendous contribution to spreading freedom philosophy to intelligent people who probably wouldn't plow through a text on economics or political philosophy.

NOBLE VISION is not for the brain dead, though at least one of that group apparently got hold of it by mistake.

If you have an active inquiring mind and are interested in more than the superficial misleading treatment that is the usual fare in commentary about the business and ethics of health care, buy, read and tell your friends about NOBLE VISION. It should be on everyone's reading list. I highly recommend it.

Noble Vision: A Review

Stop everything and read Noble Vision, by Gen LaGreca. Its breathtaking plot takes us into the battlefield of ideas that are a life and death matter. Its strongly drawn cast of characters reveal the dramatic choices we each make to create either a heaven or hell here on earth. No matter who you are, there is a character you can identify with, and no matter where you are in the book there is hair raising, bone rattling drama. You the reader will discover who you are and what you stand for. You will begin to comprehend what's going on in America today. And you will discover how important your own personal choices are to yourself in creating the kind of world in which you want to live.

In Noble Vision, Miss LaGreca shows us heroism at its finest - a medical doctor and a dancer who struggle for their values - and their lives - against all odds. To my mind, this new novel is a masterpiece of fiction that tells us more about ourselves and our world than most nonfiction - and does it in a fast paced, spellbinding way, with an urgency and drama that this reader has rarely experienced. Best of all, it leaves you feeling uplifted and inspired that such heroes could be conceived of and brought to life. Gen LaGreca is a brilliant, life-loving author and I await her next novels with impatient relish.

5 out of 5 stars Author's first? Wow........2006-08-09

This is the best new novel I've read in three decades. It has very likable heroes (adorable, actually) who know what they are doing, it has villains who are presented as such, and above all it has a suspenseful, compelling plot, one that elegantly assaults the sacred cow of socialized medicine while entertaining the hell out of the reader. Hope to find another as good in the next three decades--hint, hint, Ms. LaGreca.

4 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to an essential Buddhist teaching.......1999-05-01

Whilst reading this book one should always bear in mind that although published in 1990, the text is taken from a series of lectures delivered in 1968 shortly before Sangharakshita went on to found the FWBO (Friends of the Western Buddhist Order)and so there is necessarily some emphasis on certain points more applicable to that era. However, once the reader has accepted this and come to terms with Sangharakshita's style and insistence on precise translations and definition of terms, the 'dry' lists of traditional Buddhist doctrine are explained and brought to life in a manner that has relevance to both men and women today seeking an introduction to a core Buddhist teaching. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Impure Dharma.......1999-03-16

A friend was asking about good books on the Noble Eightfold Path, so I bought several to send to her, reading each one first. This is by far the worst, although I'm afraid it will appeal greatly to a certain type of seeker who doesn't like his or her Dharma straight. My initial objection to this book was that it was just another one of those books, all too common and all too poorly done, that is merely a reworking of a series of talks the author once gave. The more I read through this book, though, the more disturbing I found it. Within a framework of traditional Dharma teachings the author has offered up quite a mish mash of pop psychology, New Age nonsense and the tired old bashing of Christianity and Western culture which is unfortunately so chic among many of those attracted to Buddhism. I daresay, this is NOT what the Buddha taught, and the matter should simply rest there. Puzzled by this man's distortion of teachings I hold dear, I went to Yahoo to do a search about him, his background, his tradition: I suggest you do that as well.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the Noble Eightfold Path that I have read.......1998-10-08

Sangharakshita has laid out in a clear, lucid style the essence of the Buddha's Eighfold Noble Path in terms accesable to a western reader. It avoids the cliches of "don'ts" found in many books treating this subject and explores each of the eight steps in great detail. I showed this book to one of my Buddhist teacher monks and he immediately made it part of a two year training session that he is conducting

                Book Description

The Soccer Field Is Empty is the story of teen love, steamy romance, friendship, loyalty, understanding, and ancient prejudice. Here is a tale that breaks the stereotypes of the ignorant and peers into the soul of two boys who want what we all want; to love and be loved. The story of Mark and Taylor, two sixteen-year-old high school athletes, is a tale of love and happiness torn asunder by a world that understands too late.

4 out of 5 stars Romeo and Juliet from a gay prospective.......2006-08-17

This is a great casual read. Roeder does a very good job of conveying the conflicting feelings that all teens have in their relationships. He also does a great job of building up enough sympathy for the main characters that you definately feel moved at the end of this Romeo and Juliet tribute.

I don't mind giving away the end because Roeder's references to Romeo and Juliet begin in the very first sentence.

This isn't high literature but it is very effective and you will cry in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Important On Many Levels!.......2006-06-14

This is my second Mark Roeder novel. I too read "A Better Place" prior to reading "The Soccer Field...". I enjoyed both pieces, however, I found "The Soccer Field..." somewhat redundant. The author tells us every other page how much these two guys love each other (we get it already). Even though the writing is relatively mediocre I must say I love Roeder's work. I have purchased every title in "The Gay Chronicles" and look forward to reading them as well. As an adult, I identify with so many of the situations presented in his books. They are real and true, I can also say as a teacher I see many of these situations occur on school campuses everyday. The books are great reading for straight readers as well, especially adoloscents, who would benefit greatly from reading these stories. Keep up the good work Mark. I highly recommend everyone who is sensitive to the issues presented here, pick up a copy and see some real life situations that so many kids in our schools today are going through. What Mr. Roeder depicts is not far from the truth!

5 out of 5 stars Soccerfield Is GREAT.......2005-06-01

I was told om Mark's books, and I didn't start with The Soccerfield Is Empty. But when I read it, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Both characters Mark and Taylor are well writen, Mark A Roeder does a excellent job with both characters. I highly recommend his books to straight boys/Men, I am straight and I like his books I read so far. Start with The Soccerfield Is Empty, and read his books in chronological order.

1 out of 5 stars So Disappointing, It Made Me Write My First Review.......2005-03-26

I'm usually the last person to want to disparage someone's art, and it's clear that Mr. Roeder has a great deal of affection for his characters. Perhaps a bit too much. This isn't a bad book, per se, but it certainly isn't very good.

The death trap for any writer is when s/he gets into the habit of telling and not showing. That's a pitfall Mr. Roeder has not yet learned to avoid. Brevity can be your friend as well. I just don't know how the story can both move along too slowly, but also too quickly, but there we are.

I must also confess that I find the novel's denouement to be at least a teensy bit irresponsible, especially for a work that seems to be directed toward gay youth.

                3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2003-08-05

I had read "A Better Place" first and I totally enjoyed it, Mark Roeder has definetly improved since Soccer Field. I was a little disturbed by the violence in this book, it is a little unbelievable since this had taken place in 1980. Its hard to swallow that an entire school turned their backs on these 2 youths. No one intervened, not even the police, the mother's coldness towards her son who was literally half dead in the hospital was a bit hard to believe. Nothing was ever mentioned about the fact that it was the father's fault that all of this homophobia started in the first place. How many fathers do you know would call up the school coach and tell him that his Son is gay??? The storyline is good, yes I did get a bit emotional at the ending but it was very hard to get to like Taylor and Mark since we never really delved into who they are and what they were all about. This could have been an excellent book if it had been thought out in a better way. You must read it though in order to move on to the other books.
