In her fifth novel, award-winning writer Jane Urquhart interweaves the sweeping power of big historical events with small but very moving personal stories. Klara Becker is the granddaughter of a woodcarver in German-settled southern Ontario. She has a love affair with a brooding, silent Irish lad who then goes off to fight, and die, in World War I. Meanwhile her older brother Tilman has literally snapped the ties that would have chained him to the family home, and vanished.
Of course, as in all great romantic epics, the two are destined to meet again. Tilman loses his leg in the war and experiences joyful belonging with an exuberant Italian immigrant family in industrial Hamilton, Ontario, before finally venturing home. Klara remains a spinster in her small town, sewing and working on and off for years on the figure of an abbess carved from wood. The novel culminates in the building of a huge stone monument to Canada's war dead in Vimy, France. Klara and Tilman are both compelled to visit the site of this insanely ambitious artistic obsession of real-life Canadian sculptor Walter Allward; both find that they have a personal struggle to overcome the past and learn to express love. Urquhart grasps her characters from outside and inside as precious few authors manage to do. She is, in her own way, a sculptor who carves a radiant and enduring tale from the elegant material of raw language. --Nigel Hunt
Book Description
In 1867 a good-natured Bavarian priest, is sent by God and mad King Ludwig to the wilds of North America. Soon the backwoods are transformed into a parish and the settlers into a congregation, and Joseph Becker, a woodcarver, meets his future wife. Several decades later, Joseph Becker teaches his astounding carving skills to his grandchildren. One of them, Klara, shows exceptional talent and has a surfeit of what the local nuns call "a fondness for men's work." Untamed, she falls in love with an Irish boy, Eamon O'Sullivan, only to have him leave to fight in the Great War . . .

The Book + Visit to Vimy = profound.......2006-10-17
It's been 5 years since I read the book and longer ago that I had wanted to visit the Vimy memorial. So I read the book in the summer of 2001 and travelled to France in Oct 2001.
I found the combination of book + visit very moving and recommend both to any Canadian with an interest on what Canadians have done in the name of the country elsewhere in the world (though in WWI, the name of the "empire "would be closer to the truth). I recall the story as being a good read and the fictional story told of the carver's assistants added additional interest and meaning to what I actually saw upon arrival at Vimy (went directly there off the flight). The story can fit in, in a manner, as a surrogate for the actual sculpture's own story, which is not told in great depth.
The monument is an amazingly powerful place to me. The book sets up the visit very nicely.
Did I Miss Something??.......2005-03-21
After hearing about how great Jane Urquhart's writing is, I have to say I was really disappointed with The Stone Carvers. Primarily, I was irritated by the overall lack of depth in this book; The story, although somewhat interesting because it is historical, has little structure. Urquhart uses the old "parachute under the pilot's seat" device a bit too much, and so nothing is believable. Things just happen, and there is no reasoning behind circumstances or events. Likewise, the characters are flat, predictable, and rather stereotypical--not real people.
I found myself becoming aware of Urquhart's writing while reading The Stone Carvers, usually because I was amazed at how simple and un-insightful it was. Perhaps I missed something, or expected too much. Either way, I wish I hadn't bought this book!

Sweeps across three countries and two centuries.......2004-07-14
The Stone Carvers by Jane Urquhart tells the story of two long-estranged siblings and a visionary 19th Century German priest, and an obsessive sculptor by the name of Walter Allward. Klara Becker (the granddaughter of a master carver), is a seamstress haunted by a love affair cut short by World War I and the frequent disappearances of her brother Tilman. After a number of years Klara and Tilman find themselves involved with Walter Allward's ambitious war memorial at Vimy, France. This highly recommended, deftly abridged, flawlessly recorded, CD audiobook is brilliantly narrated by Nicky Guadagni who does full justice to Jane Urquhart's panoramic novel whose stories and characters sweep across three countries and two centuries.
A journey.......2003-07-13
This book was the first I've read of Jane Urquhart's novels. I read reviews about it here on Amazon before I read the book, and I was worried that I would find it too long as some reviews suggested, but I loved it. I didn't find it long at all. In fact I couldn't put it down! I took it with me everywhere, even to the golf course! Ha. The descriptions of the work that went into the stone and wood carving performed in the book made me want to go out and buy a set of carving tools. Today I went out and bought two more of her books; Away and The Underpainter. I'm hoping I will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed this one.
Elegant book by a stellar author.......2003-04-27
Jane Urguhart slowly and carefully, chisel chip by chisel chip, sets powerful but delicate personal stories against the sweeping backdrop of World War I. It's the story of Klara and her brother Tilman, separated for years and living those intervening year in very different ways. Their eventual reunion is the climax on which the story turns, and you won't be disappointed as they learn together how to move beyond their pasts and (it sounds trite, but it isn't) find love.
Highest recommendation.

Perfection achieved.......2007-09-19
Beautifully written. Historical depiction of medieval life is colorful, gritty and real. The characters are multi-layered and fascinating. The plot twists and turns are edge-of-the-seat exciting, and the stories of these people are deeply emotionally moving. Historical fiction doesn't get any better than this.
I loved it.......2007-03-08
I have read other historical fiction based in this time and place (most notably Sharon Kay Penman's trilogy of Here be Dragons, Falls the Shadow and The Reckoning). This book was written long before Penman's books, but compares very well. I was very touched by this trilogy.
An arduous climb but the view from the top is worth it........2006-10-31
You have to really WANT to finish these three books. Otherwise there are plenty of paragraphs where you might put the volume down. But the relationship between Isambard and the younger Harry, and the final payoff are well worth that effort.
These do not read as smoothly as the Cadfael series: there are a couple of sentences employing subjunctive, one early on that may leave you scratching your head, you might have to grab a good dictionary the first time you encounter "liefer", and "doubt" is often used to mean certainty. The sort of descriptive passages that Peters makes sing in the Cadfael series sound an occasional sour note here.
The core story is quite a good one, though, and the characters well-developed. Isambard is a great "honorable villain".
I'm trying to avoid spoilers here, but I will say that the circumstance that placed 3 of the characters in an important location near the end of the final book felt contrived. Also, a bit more conflict in book one would have helped add some suspense and realism. Simple setbacks like running low on the supply of a certain color stone, or having a wall collapse would have balanced things a bit. As it stands it's nearly one big happy journey until the one big conflict.
Where's Part Four?.......2006-01-24
It took me several attempts to actually read this book. It's over 900 pages and the opening chapter is rather verbose. However once I got fifty pages into The Heaven Tree, I was hooked! I love this book!
Breath Taking!!! A Must Read!!!.......2005-10-05
Ms. Pargeter's "Heaven Tree Trilogy" is a must read for fan's of historical romance specially if you are a fan of the medieval period. Although a rather lengthy read (almost 900 pages) this edition with all three stories is well worth the effort in obtaining it.
This read offeres it all as does the time in which it's set. Ms. Pargeter has brought to vivid life medieval Wales and all of the political intrigue, romance, and flavors it has to offer. Her prose and descriptive voice will gently place the read in a time that no longer exist but is recaptured brilliantly here.
This is the story of Harry, Adam, Benedetta, Gilleis, and Lord Isambard with the story starting with Harry who is a second son with an amazing talent of stone masonary. Harry is a noble man and it's due to this noblility that he gives up all for his friend Adam. This is the beginning of an epic journey that no one can imagine. With choices and decisions paving the way for future generations. And a son seeking revenge on the death of his father.
The lives of Harry, Adam, Benedetta, Harry's own son, Gilleis and Lord Isamard are so entwined that reader will be so drawn into the drama of their lives that they will be hard pressed to put down this book. There are truly no words when it comes to this amazing work of liturature. If I was to issue a warning it would be to have a BOX of kleenex on had and to be prepared to be swept back in time. Oh, and have plenty of time in order to read. I was not able to sit and read this from cover to cover but that didn't matter in the least. Whoever said time travel did not exist hasn't read this classic historical read!!!

Wonderful Story.......2007-01-12
This is a wonderful story that I enjoy reading to my children. When they get to chose a bedtime book, this one has been chosen at least 20 times. I, too, was stunned to see it was out of print.
Terrific.......2006-11-26
This is a terrific children's book that we enjoyed with our son and daughter a decade ago. Themes are friendship and finding a home. Illustrations are excellent. I was stunned to find it is out of print when I sought it for a friend who is adopting a baby girl.

Limestone Lives: Voices From The Indiana Stone Belt (Quarry Books)
ASIN: 1560988290 |
Book Description
Marjorie Hunt presents the lives and careers of two Italian-American master stone carvers, Roger Morigi and Vincent Palumbo, who have spent decades creating the sculptural works, such as gargoyles, grotesques, capitals, pinnacles, saints, and angels, that embellish Washington National Cathedral. Exploring the carvers' underlying aesthetic attitudes, Hunt reveals the spirit of creativity and mastery that infuses their work. She describes their backgrounds and apprenticeships in Italy, showing how memory and tradition continue to shape their art. The book records the stone-carving process, highlighting the carvers' complex body of technical knowledge---their opinions of various stones, their preferred tools for different stages of carving, and their techniques for achieving effects of light and shadow.
Customer Reviews:
Book is even better than the movie.......2007-01-05
This book was written over a decade after Hunt's research on stone carving formed the basis for an academy award-winning film. The film is entitled "Stone Carvers," and it's an excellent starting point to learn about the carvers. Watching the movie and then reading this book provides a great way of learning about this inspiring traditional art. Hunt gives us a good history of two carvers' lives and provides us with a great overview of the European apprenticeship system within which they learned their art. She then writes a vivid description of the salient aspects of the process of carving, illustrating her key points with beautifully presented photographs. The book builds up to a delightful chapter on the stories that are literally set in the cathedral's stone. Hunt documents, for example, stories such as a description of an argument between the master carver and one of the carvers which resulted in a very clever gargoyle-caricature of the master carver. This story is but one of many that are represented in numerous carvings, and visitors to the cathedral will greatly enjoy looking for the numerous in-jokes and clever stone figures that are discussed in Hunt's fine writing. Hunt closes her book with a fascinating discussion of the artistry as she uses relevant points within folklore scholarship to interpret the cultural expressivity within the workers' community. This focus makes the work an especially significant contribution to the historical record because the crafting of intricate stonework in cathedrals is likely to become a lost art and this type of workplace community of stone carvers will be remembered only in the stories of delightful carvers such as those depicted in Hunt's book.
hard beauty.......2000-01-12
A really handsome volume that wonderfully illuatrates this fine art. After visiting the National Cathedral (I was there for the dedication of the tympanum over the main door) and being captivated by the work of the carvers, this superb survey of monumental work brings it all to life again.
a wonderful culture revealed.......1999-11-26
Stone Carvers, a cultural study of the men who carved the stone embelishments and sculptures of the Washington National Cathedral, offers exceptional insight into this fascinating subculture. It builds on the film, released in 1985, which won a documentary academy award for the author, Majorie Hunt of the Smithsonian anthropology staff. The characters of these unique, talented and charming men are beautifully revealed while the photographs make clear what a monument they have created. They were trained in the classic stone carving workshops of Italy, came to this country as young men and created a world of classical beauty on buildings on the Washington Mall, and in New York as well as at the Cathedral. The last of these unique men, Vincent Palumbo, carved the wonderous Creation sculpture [by Fredrick Hart] over the central door of the cathedral, the visual image of which was used without premission for the movie Devil's Advocate [Washington Episcopal Diocese sued to block release of the movie until some images were removed]. The fact that monumental stonecarving is both a dying art and a dying subculture makes this documentary book all the more valuable and poignant. I visit with Mr. Palumbo about once a week just to hear his tales of the old days when these great men walked the roofs of the sixth largest cathedral in the world and carved their impressions in immortal stone.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2001-10-28
This is a must have book for beginner or established Fetish collectors. It is a great, quick resource. I did not get as much out of the second volume, but this one is a must have.
Outstanding Resource.......2000-07-30
This book, together with its successor volume, is the ultimate reference guide for the beginning or experienced collector. The author, who is probably the pre-eminent authority on the subject, provides clear, valuable information encompassing various segments of this remarkable art and contemporary artists. If you own or are considering purchasing these intriguing carvings, this little book (and the accompanying Volume II) should be your bible.
Outstanding Resource.......2000-07-30
This little book (together with Volume II) is the most valuable reference guide on the market today for either the beginning or experienced collector. The author, probably the leading authority on the subject, provides clear, useful information, encompassing various segments of the art and artists, necessary for the understanding and purchase of these remarkable objects. The two books are a joy to read and own.
Excellent introduction to the world of Zuni fetish carvings.......1999-03-11
An excellent guidebook of the wide variety of Zuni fetishes carvings available today. McManis goes into some painstaking detail of Zuni cosmology in the introduction, then gives details on each of the animals that are frequently carved now in Zuni, and finishes the silm volume with a discussion of four Zuni carving families accompanied by genealogical tables and a list of active carvers as of 1998. Photographs are extremely well done, however, there are no close up details of fetishes, given that there are families like the Cheamas and the Kaamasees now producing extraordinarily detailed and lifelike "non-traditional" fetishes. A must have reference for anyone beginning or enhancing a collection of these fascinating carvings. Volume #2 covers the extensive range of materials used and details additional family groupings.
A well-rounded introduction to a unique form of artistry.......1998-07-11
I'm a very, very new collector, so I don't know how applicable my comments would be for experienced collectors. But from the perspective of someone fairly new to, but interested in, Zuni fetishes, this is a marvelous little book. It's full of crystal clear, gorgeous, detailed photos on wonderful paper and just the right amount and variety (for me) of well-written information to whet one's appetite for this fascinating topic.

The Stone Carvers: Master Craftsmen of Washington National Cathedral
ASIN: 025334512X |
Book Description
Look up at the Empire State Building in New York City and you will see an almost endless ribbon of soaring stoneIndiana limestone, to be precise. The Empire State Building, Pentagon, Chicago Tribune Building, and many university structures, state capitols, post offices, and churches in every state (and buildings in other countries) are constructed of this exceptional material, renowned for its durability, consistency, and capacity to accept and retain fine detail. When part of the Pentagon was destroyed after 9/11, an Indiana quarry went to work, mining 46 truckloads of limestone to be sent to the Washington site and enabling reconstruction to be completed ahead of schedule.
Limestone Lives pays tribute to the skill and dedication of the men and women who work with stone. It combines 79 striking fine art photographic images with engaging oral histories, representing a range of voices of the workers themselves. We hear from sculptors, drill runners, stone polishers, planermen, forklift operators, a union leader, and the president of a stone company. The book also features brief descriptions of the region's stone companies, a map locating Indiana quarries and stone mills, and a look at how the industry has changed over the years.
Limestone Lives is a testament to men and women who take enormous pride in the quality of their work, as well as to the role this unique industry plays in creating buildings that last.

Real People in Limestone.......2004-12-06
I just finished reading this book...I love it. Ok, I am somewhat biased since Ms. Ferrucci selected my brother, Ned Cunningham, as one carver she interviewed. My family has been in every phase of limestone from my grandfather, to my father, step-father, and both brothers. This book really captures the real impact of limestone on peoples lives. The pictures are clean and varied. Nice job! Jean Cunningham

BEFORE YOU BUY, READ.......2003-01-01
I rate this book 3 stars. This book is very short- about 50 pages and only 1/2 the page are words. But the pictures are okay, and it gives a good information about how the Sphinx is made of. I wouldn't read this book more than 2 times, but if you're interested in Egyption history, this book isn't bad.
Book Description
The fourth title in the innovative New Mexico Artist Series, 3-D art/techné spotlights once again the extraordinary art and artistic life in New Mexico today. 3-D art/techné explores the work of more than thirty artists based in New Mexico who use traditional skills in non-traditional ways or who use non-traditional materials in traditional ways.
Recognizing that many people who work this way produce three-dimensional work, the book will focus on those who produce free-standing objects and those who may work on the wall but project out from it as well. Ranging from metal, wood, stone, clay and fiber to assemblage and glass, these works of art pose post-modern questions about modernist considerations of form and function. Among those featured are Tom Waldron, Barbara Zusman, Gail Rieke, and Tracy Krumm.
An exciting exploration of the work of over thirty New Mexico artists who create in three dimensions.

Where does the romance occur?.......2004-12-13
It was o.k. I just really missed the part where they fell in love. As they are threatening each other and yelling, they are thinking of their unrequited love. The conflict went on way too long without depth to the plot showing the growing of their love. Yes, Viking stories can be harsh, but these are, after all, men. They have feelings and enjoy family( the author even makes note of this with the brother Eric).
Not a page-turner........2004-06-12
I liked the story, but it didn't flow right. It also lacked humor and humility. I didn't get Erin at all.
It was strange to see how much the male character grieved for and adored his first love. That's rare, and I'm telling ya, it ruined the story early on. More in this series? if I see the next at a sale, maybe.
An enjoyable romantic read..........1999-12-27
This mixture of romance, history, and war turned out to be a very good historical romance. The two main characters, Erin and Olaf, are both strong-willed, proud and stubborn which made for some interesting feuding from the very beginning. The author fleshed them out enough to make you care about them, and like them both.
Aside from the romance, which was very good, there were also some pretty interesting battle scenes as war raged on between the Vikings and the Irish. (Don't worry, these scenes aren't overlong.) The author did a good job of conveying the pride and dignity of both sides in the warring.
I must admit I was slightly irritated by a few things Erin did, but I quickly overcame my irritation because of the interesting way that the situations were resolved. This irritation was also overshadowed by some of the admirable actions that Olaf took.
In sum, if you like historical romances, this is a book worth reading.
Wonderfully Enchanting! A Must Read!!.......1999-11-29
This is the best book I have ever read. The main characters were beautifully written! Erin the beautiful strong-willed princess had me rooting for her throughout the entire novel and Olaf, stole my heart with his tough exterior but a true softy at heart. This is a story of suspense and love that is meant to be. It will keep you glued to each page, and make you cry at the wonderful ending. I loved it, and have read it again 4 times!!
This is a viking romance that will make you want more.......1998-11-16
I loved this magical viking romance. This book is the first to a trilogy, all three probably the best viking romances I have ever read. A must read and a must for your collection!!!
