In Manhattan Hunt Club John Saul plumbs the depths of the Manhattan underground--the network of subway tunnels and secret caverns and chambers where the homeless denizens of the city have created their own society. It's a world Jeff Converse, a young college student convicted of a crime he didn't commit, never knew existed until he is plunged into it after an "accident" that occurs while he is being transported to prison. He soon realizes that it's no accident, but the opening move in a deadly game being played by some of the city's most powerful men and women, a game in which he is the prey and they are the hunters. Jeff's only chance to make it to the surface and survive lies in allying himself with a homicidal maniac who's appointed himself the young man's protector, but whose designs on Jeff are almost as lethal as those of his enemies in the Manhattan Hunt Club.
Saul made his reputation in the horror genre, but he now focuses on psychological terrors rather than things that go bump in the night. His narrative gifts are displayed to great advantage in this heart-stopping thriller; the pacing is flawless and the central characters are very well developed. What keeps this from living up to its fullest potential is the inadequate motivation of the villains, who are largely one-dimensional cardboard cutouts. But that won't keep this otherwise topnotch thriller off the bestseller lists, where Saul (Nightshade, The Right Hand of Evil), like Stephen King, is a perennial contender for the number one spot. --Jane Adams

The acknowledged master of psychological suspense and heart-stopping terror, New York Times bestselling author John Saul now invites you to descend to chilling new depths of darkness -- and discover a secret, savage world that exists beneath our very feet.
The promising future of New York City college student Jeff Converse has suddenly been shattered by a nightmarish turn of events. Falsely convicted of a brutal crime, Jeff sees his life vanishing before his eyes. But someone has other plans for Jeff, in a far deadlier place than any penitentiary. He finds himself beneath the teeming streets of Manhattan, in a hidden landscape of twisting tunnels and forgotten subterranean chambers. Here, an invisible population of the homeless, the desperate, and the mad has carved out its own shadow society.
But they are not alone. The pitch-dark tunnels and abandoned subway stations are haunted by the unmistakable sounds of predators in search of game. Someone has made this forsaken civilization beneath the city a private killing ground... and the hunt is on.
Trapped in a treacherous underground maze, cut off at every turn by ragged gangs of sinister "gamekeepers," and stalked relentlessly by unseen hunters, Jeff faces overwhelming odds in the race to reach salvation and elude capture. With no weapon but his wits, and an unimaginable threat lurking around every dark corner, Jeff must somehow move heaven and earth to escape from a living hell.
The Manhattan Hunt Club is the most thrilling and suspenseful novel yet from the ingenious mind of John Saul.
"Heart-of-darkness storyteller Saul weaves a creepy tale of murder, corruption, and evil... It's a hot tome for summer in the city."
PEOPLE
"Long after you've finished this suspenseful cliffhanger of a book, the underground world that Saul creates will linger in the mind.... Saul takes us deep into that dark night of the soul and the subways in his frighteningly realistic and scarifying tale."

Customer Reviews:
Awesome! Suspensful! Shocking! Gross!!!.......2007-10-07
This is the most amazing book I ever read. It's actually the first one of John Saul's that I did read. I read it back in August of 2003 and still use it as a measure for all-time great books. I couldn't put it down! When I did (because I do work and sleep), it was still on my mind. It amazes me how John could come up with such an unusual story line that kept my interest all through even the creepy, grossest parts. It was so suspensful and intriguing. It deals with our justice system, the homeless, and was thought provoking as well which makes this is one of the best creepiest books I've read. If you like suspense and can stand some grossness, this is a must read!
A good read.......2007-02-10
We've all heard of how slaves were hunted for sport in days gone by.
Mr. Saul has cleverly transposed the `Game' to modern times with the Hunt taking place in the endless tunnels below Manhattan.
The hunters are the powerbrokers who choose the victims--those, who in the opinion of the Hunt Club, need to be eliminated for the good of the public.
The hunted are criminals who have got off lightly for their crimes.
Unfortunately, Jeff, wrongly accused of assault and attempted rape, is one of the chosen.
He finds an unexpected ally in one of the residents of the tunnels and together they take on the hunters.
The finale is a bit of a stretch, but the action is fast and realistic and keeps one turning the pages.
Corky Suspense.......2006-11-24
This was an interesting premise and kept my attention throughout the book. Jeff and Jagger were well developed but the other characters lacked substance. I found the whole homeless angle intriguing giving us a glimpse on how "the other half live." I felt however that the story per se was drawn out more then it needed and that in the end too many bad breaks and co-incidences happened to the hunters to be believable. Saul may have wanted a tidy ending but sacrificed a lot of creditability to do so. Perhaps if Jeff's father had died in some way it may have given the story a more realistic feel. After all, we are supposed to believe that the hunters have been doing this for a while now and thus their seasoned skills should have come through. The character of Eve Harris in my opinion was a mess. In the beginning she comes across as cunning and compassionate only to become a bumbling idiot in the end. Couldn't Saul done a little more with her? Maybe if she had been the one to kill Jeff's father then had her accident or something to that effect. Heather was nothing more then Jeff's main squeeze and never progressed from that stage. One could also argue there was a tad to much homophobia laced among some of the characters especially when it came to Jagger. I'm not saying gay guys can't be killers but setting up Jagger next to Jeff the homophobia comes right through. And what about the homeless? Well, in the end Saul remained neutral on the topic; a mere tool to use for a story. All the homeless characters were either alcoholics or bums say for Jinks. All this does is simply re-enforce the old stereo types. It would have been more compelling to have a sub-plot where a person is slowly becoming homeless and gets entangled with the whole underground society. In the end, the book does entertain and there are more then a few suspenseful moments although at times the suspense seems forced. Again the biggest disappointment is the ending and the dummying down of characters to tidy things up. The unabridged recording of this book contains seven cassettes and the narrator does an okay job although his Eve Harris is atrocious. I rate it a c+ and recommend it for a beach read but be prepared to totally suspend disbelief to the fullest.
Don't bother hunting for this novel.......2006-07-18
After reading this novel, I have now officially become a "non-fan" of John Saul. I discovered him when I became enthralled with "Creature" several years ago. Then I read "Black Creek Crossing" and figured that was just a misfire. Now after reading "Manhattan Hunt Club(MHC)," I'm sure it will be a long time before I give Mr. Saul another try.
I am always willing to stretch my imagination so I can become absorbed in a horror or suspense novel. It is easier to do if you have characters you care about and a storyline that, in spite of sounding implausible, moves quickly with surprises along the way. I think that is the problem with "MHC." For me, it delivers neither.
The story begins with a young man being found guilty of a murder and sentenced to a short time in jail. As he is being transported away, he is kidnapped, his death faked, and he finds himself below the subway tunnels of New York among the homeless. Little does he know it but he is now the prey in a twisted hunt. **Spoiler Alert: If you have seen the 1983 Michael Douglas movie "The Star Chamber," the plot is exactly the same.**
I guess the idea that there really may be an actual community of people living below the NYC streets is supposed to add a measure of credibility to the plot. Sorry, I just did not buy into the story and I did not "get into" the characters(And by the way, I think I am beginning to get tired of the plot device in recent stories and films that have the character in distress find a cell phone only to have the battery run out on them. I think it has already become a cliche'). My suggestion is pass on "MHC" unless you think John Saul can do no wrong.
Saul remains a disapointing author.......2006-07-01
This is the fourth novel I've now read from Saul and I think I'm about ready to throw in the towel. With the exception of the Homing, which was actually pretty good until the end, I've found Saul's works to be one boring mass of predicable, unrealistic, unrealized plots that may have once had potential. He prose feels like it's written for television, devoid of all but the most scant details and his dialogue is at times painful to read. The Manhattan Hunt Club is yet another in the long line of knock off's from the story "the most dangerous game," and this one falls shorter than most.
If you've seen the film "the Cell" you may get the idea. It looked decent in the previews, but sitting in the theatre I continually saw people looking around, completely bored with the wholly unremarkable presentation. The only reason I finished this book at all is because it goes so fast I figured "what the hell."
It's only been a few months and already I'm having trouble remembering any of the story, so what does that tell you.
Anyway, save your money. Track down an anthology that has the most dangerous game, read "Reliquary" by Preston and Child, (which also deals with the subway homeless in new York,) or hell, rent Van Dam's movie hard target, it's pretty much the same thing and better, which is kind of sad.

Not His Best by a Long Shot.......2007-10-03
I like some of John Saul's work, but I thought THE MANHATTAN HUNT CLUB was a pretty mediocre effort.
The concept of this novel (people living in the tunnels underneath the New York Subway) is potentially interesting, but Saul invests little effort in creating believable characters or a realistic plot. In particular, I found the identity of the villains to be ridiculous. The overall silliness of this book made it hard for me to enjoy.
In short, THE MANHATTAN HUNT CLUB is pretty lackluster. My advice is to try some of Saul's better known work, such as SUFFER THE CHILDREN or THE GOD PROJECT. Those novels are more exciting, and have much stronger plots and characters.
On the edge of your seat thriller.......2007-09-03
This book was absolutely unreal.. I read few books cover to cover without putting them down at least once - but this book I could not put down. Great book by Saul, I was totally into the book from the beginning. Great novel!
Enjoyable,intense read.......2007-06-27
This is one of Sauls best.Of coarse he is one of my favorite writers. This starts of with and bang and kept me turning the pages to the very end.Great characters as well
not best.......2007-01-31
I bought this book with more expectations to enjoy another triller of John Saul, but i was a bit... very... smth between very and a bit disappointed.
This book is about guy is catacombs and that is followed by men who like to shoot people for fun. The story is a bit boring and predictable. And scenario is too easy to follow.
If i would not know who is author i would never guess that it's Saul. Well, there is of cause some interesting moment in book, that tense you a bit and not let you to fall asleep. But anyway it's not one of that books that you can read on one breath.
A Creepy Read!.......2006-06-16
Saul's suspenseful thriller The Manhattan Hunt Club starts off with a race to the death and ends with a race for survival. This book will leave you completely and utterly breathless and is one I would never read on the subways of New York.
Jeff Converse is sent to prison--for a crime he didn't commit. But instead of the confines and safety of concrete prison walls, he is given his freedom. If one can call it that. Jeff has become the prey in a deadly game, hunted by people with wealth, power and a sadistic lust for control. And what better control can one have than that over another human being's fate? `Should he live or die?'
Saul paints a terrifyingly hellish canvas of winding subway tunnels and a believable secret subterranean city--the land of the lost, the forgotten, the homeless and the insane. This novel is a pavement-pounding masterpiece of terror.
John Saul is a master of horror. I started as a teen, reading Suffer the Children, and have read almost every one of his books, but this one stayed with me far after the last page was turned. Along with Stephen King and Dean Koontz, Saul has been responsible for some of my sleepless nights and most terrifying dreams. And I can't wait for their next books! :)

avid reader.......2007-05-14
Debbie Macomber never ceases to amaze me with her imagination and creativity in all of her works that I have read. She keeps you interested and has a little bit of everything - romance, relationships, mystery - in her stories. I enjoy the fact that there is a sequel to the serial stories wherein you can see what happens to the characters in the next novel. Can't wait for the Heart of Texas Vol. 2 to come!!
Heart of Texas Vol. 1 .......2007-03-09
I have not read any of Debbie Macomber's book that I haven't enjoyed and had not been a page turner. Her Heart of Texas series is so real to life and you feel like you are part of the story; you are taken in from the first page to the very last. The people in the story and the Texas towns are described so well that you want to go visit and meet all the folks you are reading about. You laugh and you cry with them; you enjoy the visit through every page. As long as Debbie writes books I am going to buy them and enjoy every word. Debbies books should get a million stars.
Debbie Does it Again!.......2007-03-06
One of the things that I love most about Debbie Macomber's stories is that she continues them in a series of books. I never really feel like I am saying, "Good-bye," to her characters. They become friends that I can continue to visit with each new book in the series. And Debbie does not disappoint with this series. Her characters are very well-developed as are the storylines. (I'm still wondering what's happening at Bitter End!)

Larry McMurtry, in books like The Last Picture Show, has depicted the modern degeneration of the myth of the American West. The subject of
Lonesome Dove, cowboys herding cattle on a great trail-drive, seems like the very stuff of that cliched myth, but McMurtry bravely tackles the task of creating meaningful literature out of it. At first the novel seems the kind of anti-mythic, anti-heroic story one might expect: the main protagonists are a drunken and inarticulate pair of former Texas Rangers turned horse rustlers. Yet when the trail begins, the story picks up an energy and a drive that makes heroes of these men. Their mission may be historically insignificant, or pointless--McMurtry is smart enough to address both possibilities--but there is an undoubted valor in their lives. The result is a historically aware, intelligent, romantic novel of the mythic west that won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
Book Description
Bestselling winner of the 1986 Pulitzer Prize, Lonesome Dove is an American classic. First published in 1985, Larry McMurtry's epic novel combined flawless writing with a storyline and setting that gripped the popular imagination, and ultimately resulted in a series of four novels and an Emmy-winning television miniseries. Now, with an introduction by the author, Lonesome Dove is reprinted in an S&S Classic Edition.
Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry, the author of Terms of Endearment, is his long-awaited masterpiece, the major novel at last of the American West as it really was.
A love story, an adventure, an American epic, Lonesome Dove embraces all the West -- legend and fact, heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settiers -- in a novel that recreates the central American experience, the most enduring of our national myths.
Set in the late nineteenth century, Lonesome Dove is the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana -- and much more. It is a drive that represents for everybody involved not only a daring, even a foolhardy, adventure, but a part of the American Dream -- the attempt to carve out of the last remaining wilderness a new life.
Augustus McCrae and W. F. Call are former Texas Rangers, partners and friends who have shared hardship and danger together without ever quite understanding (or wanting to understand) each other's deepest emotions. Gus is the romantic, a reluctant rancher who has a way with women and the sense to leave well enough alone. Call is a driven, demanding man, a natural authority figure with no patience for weaknesses, and not many of his own. He is obsessed with the dream of creating his own empire, and with the need to conceal a secret sorrow of his own. The two men could hardly be more different, but both are tough, redoubtable fighters who have learned to count on each other, if nothing else.
Call's dream not only drags Gus along in its wake, but draws in a vast cast of characters:
-- Lorena, the whore with the proverbial heart of gold, whom Gus (and almost everyone else) loves, and who survives one of the most terrifying experiences any woman could have...
-- Elmira, the restless, reluctant wife of a small-time Arkansas sheriff, who runs away from the security of marriage to become part of the great Western adventure...
-- Blue Duck, the sinister Indian renegade, one of the most frightening villains in American fiction, whose steely capacity for cruelty affects the lives of everyone in the book...
-- Newt, the young cowboy for whom the long and dangerous journey from Texas to Montana is in fact a search for his own identity...
-- Jake, the dashing, womanizing exRanger, a comrade-in-arms of Gus and Call, whose weakness leads him to an unexpected fate...
-- July Johnson, husband of Elmira, whose love for her draws him out of his secure life into the wilderness, and turns him into a kind of hero...
Lonesome Dove sweeps from the Rio Grande (where Gus and Call acquire the cattle for their long drive by raiding the Mexicans) to the Montana highlands (where they find themselves besieged by the last, defiant remnants of an older West).
It is an epic of love, heroism, loyalty, honor, and betrayal -- faultlessly written, unfailingly dramatic. Lonesome Dove is the novel about the West that American literature -- and the American reader -- has long been waiting for.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely magnificent.......2007-09-10
A phenomenal achievement, Lonesome Dove could well be considered the Great American Novel. Part road trip, part character study, this amazing novel should be on everyone's reading list!
Mr. McMurtry has succeeded admirably in creating a cast of characters that any writer could be proud of, and especially of absolutely nailing a complex relationship between the two principle characters. In August McCrae and Captain Woodrow Call, McMurtry has gifted us with two of the best and most complete characters ever written, let alone loosed upon the Western landscape. Add to them a host of other rich characters, and an understanding of the trials and dangers of a complete north-to-south transverse of America, and you've got Lonesome Dove.
Desperately moving, though often humorous, this is American writing at its very best. Despite its length, it's a quick read. That's probably true because, as other reviewers here have said, once you begin this beautiful book it will accompany you everywhere you go until it's finished.
Perfect!!!.......2007-09-09
Reading this book is was one of the best experiences of my life. Truely it soaks into your soul and becomes a part of who you are. Its is something that you never forget. How it made you feel. Each of the characters and how you still pull for them despite their fictional exsistance. Physically it has its effect on you as well. Especially since you have to put it down to wipe your eyes many times through out. Read! Experience! Enjoy!
New Favorite.......2007-09-05
My husband read this some 16-17 years ago and told me I should read it one day. Well, I just read it and Lonesome Dove is now one of my top 5 favorite books ever. I absolutely loved it. It was truly sad at the end, all those characters were with me for those wonderful days of reading and now I'm done. I'll just have to read it again....
One of great masterpieces of our time.......2007-07-30
I read this book about 15 years ago, and I never read another western since. Nothing can measure up to this masterpiece. Even though it started out slowly and I almost gave it up, I stayed with it and I am so glad that I did. This is a true classic.
Stunning!.......2007-07-15
I found this book a little slow at the start but I'm glad I persevered. This is a magnificent novel. One of the best I've read in years.

This is the first book in the Promise, Texas series.......2005-06-22
Those who are fans of Debbie Macomber know what to expect with these series - very light, sweet stories with memorable characters.
In Lonesome Cowboy, Savannah lives with her brother Grady on their ranch. Grady had to work extra hard to keep the ranch together after the death of their parents, as a result he is often short tempered an grouchy. Savannah is a wonderful person, sometimes a little too-good-to-be-true, especially when it comes to her brother Richard (the never-do-well of the family).
Savannah is in her thirties and has resigned herself to never getting married - she hasn't even had a date in years! When she meets a stranded cowboy on the road and offers to give him a lift, and then one thing leads to another - can true love be so quick, and so easy?
What Debbie Macomber does best is create realistic characters - some good, some not so good, and some - it's up to the reader to guess? In this book she is true to her craft, and the characters I met in this book are definitely ones I want to meet again - in the rest of the series.
Sweet, light reading.
Refreshing.......2000-07-14
I was so glad I read this book. It is a light and very refreshing read. I get so tired of reading about men and women who can't stand each other and then within two to three hundred pages fall madly in love and live happily ever after. Come on, life isn't like that. Thank you to Ms. Macomber who realizes that and writes a light book about people who live honest hard-working lives. (And there is just enough evilness in the character of Richard to keep things stirred up a bit.) If you're looking for a book that is a change from streamline romance this book is the one for you!
A truly sweet romance series........1999-01-29
I too prefer clean romance. Nobody does it better than Debbie Macomber. We are a Christian family and so are wary of main line fiction, but I am so taken with Ms. Macomber.... I let my teenaged daughter read all this series. Excellent!
Great Book.......1999-01-28
I really enjoyed meeting the folks of Promise. Debbie does a great job with the story. I fell in love with Savannah and Laredo. Grady is a hard cookie, but he'll soften up. The mystery surrounding Bitter End is intriuging.
Debbie's romp in a series form.......1998-08-01
Debbie Macomber's done it again. She made summer a little more enjoyable with a series. The first is Lonesome Cowboy. She provides excellent tension between hero and heroine with a interesting complications from her two brothers. I had a difficult time trying to choose which one needed smacked on the head first. As another rose fanatic, I loved her correct details on historical roses. I can hardly wait to read the next one, TEXAS TWO STEP.

Lonesome Dove.......2002-12-04
Lonesome Dove is one of the best books I have ever read. It has drama, action, love and everything that makes a good book good. The story begins with the author describing the characters and the story, and you really can connect with the characters. The main character is Gus McCrae, an ex Texas Ranger who is very lazy, and loves to drink. Despite this, he is an excellent ranger and his name is known all throughout America. The other main character is Call. He is a hard working, stubborn man who doesn't like ot talk alot. The story goes on from there. I recomend this book for advanced readers, who want a spellbinding story.
Outstanding, exciting & entertaining account of early Texas.......1998-07-15
I have read "Dead Man's Walk", "Comanche Moon","Lonesome Dove" and am now starting "Streets of Larado". My only disappointment is that the books don't contain a map depicting the locations of the major events. I wish the author could post one, so I can track the events and better relate to the actual locations. I loved the books- I grew up in West Texas and can identify with much of the landscape descriptions.
Loved reading three of McMurtry's novels at one whack-.......1998-01-31
Larry McMurtry has an easy-going, though smart, style, that I identify with deeply. He doesn't try to pummel you with big words and confusing sentences. He writes like it feels.
THREE WINNERS.......1997-02-25
THE LAST PICTURE SHOW was set in a town about a hundred miles from where I live. Like all Texas towns, after the Korean War, television killed the down town area along with the picture shows. Larry was able to capture the smell of hot pop corn and hot bodies pressed against one another. Back before that war, young men had little more on their minds than how they could earn enough money after football pratice so they could take the beauty queen out - and sometimes, the football coach's wife. When the retard was killed by a fast truck, an era ended. If you are in Archer City, visit Larry's rare book store. You can pick up bargains for $5 to $1,000

Book Description
A collection of poetry, illustrations and journal excerpts from the author's life and travels in the modern American West. From cattle ranches to pack outfits, from horseback to mule-back, from the sagebrush plains to the high Sierra Nevada mountains, these poems tell their stories in the best bardic tradition. Designed to be read aloud around a snapping campfire, the easy rhythm of rhyming verse invites the reader to share the ride on long and dusty trails. Interspersed among the poems are snippets from journals the author kept in distant camps, sharing observations from the whimsical to the sublime. The author's pen-and-ink illustrations further enhance this brief escape from the modern world.
