Creation Health Breakthrough.......2007-01-30
Once I started reading Creation Health I couldn't put it down. The writing was engaging, educational and had so many practical tips and suggstions on how to live a more fulfilling life. The author uses her personal experiences to bring a reality to the material that fully connects on the emotional level. In today's fast paced life of non stop running this book has an effective way of questioning, DO WE UNDERSTAND THE REAL PRICE WE PAY FOR IT?
This book has so touched my spirit, that I have purchased it for three people I love very much. Their thank yous haven't stopped, but the benefits each have received are priceless.
If you care about living life to its fullest and have people who you wish to do the same, get this book...read it, and act on the tips.
A Must Have in Your Wellness Library!.......2007-01-25
I was drawn to this book because the concept of "creating health" is one I see far too rarely in our society today. As an executive coach, I have worked with numerous individuals from all walks of life who see their health as only a condition of their well-being rather than as a consequence of their actions. But this is where Dr. Reed steps out from behind the curtain to reveal the truth that many of us try to hide from ourselves... for better or worse, we create our health. As she states in The Creation Health Breakthrough, "C is for choice." We have a choice in the type of health we create for ourselves and if we so choose, we can follow Dr. Reed's simple and inspiring plan to create a healthful and positive future for ourselves. Unlike the more typical stern reproach you might get from your doctor about your lifestyle choices, Dr. Reed writes with humor and empathy, using stories to definitively make her case while keeping you engaged and inspired to follow the Creation Health plan. I not only intend to recommend this book to all of those I coach as a guide for finding balance and wellness in life... I intend to include The Creation Health Breakthrough as a central part of my own personal wellness library.

Customer Reviews:
Those Mean Nasty Dirty Downright Disgusting but Invisible Germs.......2007-05-30
I started reading this book to my son when he was three and it really taught him the importance hand washing. He is now four and it is still one of his favorite books to read. It is very entertaining and explains the concept in a way which is easy for preschool children to understand. Now when he comes home from daycare, as a routine, the first thing he does is wash his hands. and he knows the meaning behind it.
ARE YOU KIDDING?.......2005-02-20
I hope that you all know that not all of the germs on our bodies are bad. There are germs that we need to make sure our bodies function correctly. This book is just making kids believe that they have to be anal-retentive about washing their hands or they are going to die. Let's all face the reality, if you want your child to wash their hands and you like this book, fine, but you should also explain to your child the concept of "good" flora and why we need them.
Those Mean Nasty Dirty Germs.......2004-01-14
This book is a favorite in my classroom every year. It teaches the importance of handwashing and how to stay healthy which is part of our school curriculum. Each child makes a picture of his/her favorite germ after the story. The germs are glued on a poster by our sink that reminds the children to wash "Those Mean Nasty Dirty Downright Disgusting But Invisible Germs" off their hands. It really works!
My preschoolers love it!.......2002-02-25
Although I have to add to it, my kids really love this book! I had to discuss what invisible meant (that big ten foot bunny in the corner!), and give a visible demonstration afterward (paint or glitter in my hand that I "sneeze" into, and then offer to shake hands and touch other things in the room. We talk about sneezing into your elbow and tissues to keep us safe from germs. We use funny voices for the different germs to make it more "kid friendly." My kids have it almost memorized, and beg for it to be read. Really helps explain germs, even to my 2 yr. olds, without being too "boring" to my 5 yr. olds. Hope that helps!
This book is scary........2000-10-11
I feel this book can be a bit scary to children. My 4 year old was frightened after reading this book because he learned germs were everywhere that he felt used to be safe, his school and home. True, germs are everywhere and we do need to teach children to wash their hands, but I don't think it's necessary to get into detailled descriptions of germs that cause headaches, earaches, fevers and throwing up, and that even after washing their hands, the germs will come back. Children need to know about handwashing and germs but they also need to feel a sense of security and well being in school in order for it to be a positive experience.

Transitions: Making Sense of Life's Changes
ASIN: 0684811898 |
Book Description
Fundamental life changes such as these were once viewed as momentary interruptions in an otherwise stable life pattern. Today, such transitions are becoming an increasingly prevalent part of our lives and require that we find new skills to adapt to them.
Thriving in Transition is a uniquely practical, holistic approach to negotiating these forces of change successfully. Drawing on principles of psychology, spirituality, physics, organizational development, and her own research, Marcia Perkins-Reed has discovered strategies that enable people not only to survive multiple, simultaneous changes, but actually thrive in an environment of constant change. She outlines a six-phase model of the transition process and describes the traits that make up the "Thriver Profile" to show how to turn stress-causing transitional periods into times of growth and regeneration. Each chapter includes a checklist or summary of key points to assist readers in applying the model concepts to their own lives.
Thriving in Transition is an indispensable guide to helping us embrace, rather than resist, the complex circumstances of our ever-changing world, and thus forge more peaceful and fulfilling lives.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended reading for transitions in one's life........2000-10-21
Useful as it explains many aspects of making successful transitions. Essentially with a theme of thriving it has interesting case studies. It list the difference between the 'old zero' and the 'new zero'. It also shows the characteristics of a coper and profiles the traits of a thriver. The book is a 'workplan' for those who wish to become thrivers. Not only does the book address the issue of careers but many other personal challenges one faces in life. I would recommend this book to mentors, coaches and cousellors.
I absolutely loved this book!.......2000-07-27
This is a wonderful book! I read it at a time of tremendous upheaval in my life and found it to be quite insightful. It offers a positive perspective for those who find themselves in the midst of tumultuous, unsettling personal situations. I recommend it highly!

The Living Reed, Ms. Buck has created a story of Korea in transition to the modern world through her characters. The sweep of history and the excitement of great events provide only part of the book's power:
The story is of a closely knit family dedicated to the salvation of their homeland, the preservation of their culture, and a move into the modern world from the archaic ways of the past. Korea, the golden pawn in the midst of the past. Korea, the golden pawn in the midst of centuries of struggle between China, Russia, and Japan, is finally on the brink of becoming independent.
All major public events and characters are authentic--from the assassination plots early in the book to the landing of American troops at the end.
The Living Reed is compelled by the vivid detail of a remarkable people and culture, the unveiling of three love stories, and Buck's affinity for her subject.
Customer Reviews:
I think this book is very well worth reading........2004-04-13
The book The living Reed is a good book worth reading if one want to know more about Korean history in fictional form. The Korean history is interesting since the country always has been the cultural center of the Far East, between countries like Japan, China and Russia; Chinese culture have always been transformed in Korea on its way to Japan. Several countries did recognize Korea important from both a geographical, political and cultural perspective. So important that these countries supported a war in Korea during the years of 1950-53. The two divided Korea is a living proof of this.
Pearl Buck is not a historical writer of accuracy but describes the Korean history and the Korean people in an interesting, fictional way that gives more understanding for the current situation on the Korean peninsula, a situation that have been neglected by the world too long. To say the less, Korea is still not well.known to the majority of Westerners, as much as Japan and China.
No, Koreans are not heroes more than anyone else but I truly believe that the people that contributed to the modern Korea of today should be remembered and acknowledged and Pearl Buck do it very well in this book.
Historical Accuracy?.......2002-12-02
It's an OK story. Worth reading. As to its historical accuracy, it is a novel which is a work of fiction. Most historical novels are not accurate--the novelist just takes a place and point in time and uses it to tell his/her story. Whether or not it is historical accurate isn't an issue-it is fiction.
It is a good novel for people who are related to Korea........1999-10-26
There are many different ways to review the writings of any kind. Here we have an old novel written by a woman who grew up in China and understood the cultural differences. It is by no means the most accurate description of Korean history or the way people lived of her time. However, I ended up admiring her attempt to know better and in the end to have understood the people and the way of their living and struggle. Nobody can understand the cultural differences and the values of the society unless we live on both sides of the world. That was what she did and used it for her writing. It was a good writing as a novel and described exactly the way of living of the Korean people during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unbelievable? That is because you have no idea of the real core of different cultures. For example, my family maintains 1,000 years of written history of family geneology of my clan.It shows how we died during the struggle and how we maintain our family by a written code of conduct based on Humanism. That is the reason why Korean are nationalistic. That was accurately described in her writing.
....when she really started churning'em out.......1999-10-16
I'm no expert on Korea or Korean history, though I did live there for six months some years ago. At that time, I learned enough about the country to realize that THE LIVING REED is a joke. If you like soap opera, uplifting prose about valiant people striving to overcome whatever, then this book could be for you. But, if you like reasonably authentic background and depiction of central characters who are not cardboard figures, then think twice before devoting too much of your time to such a book. Pearl Buck had a hit with 'The Good Earth', true. But she tried to capitalize on that and churned out more and more 'uplifting sagas' of this type. OK, so maybe she did it to increase understanding of Asia in the USA. It was for a good cause. But what we are doing here is reviewing books. This book is just not very good. Times have changed and it's out of fashion (happily) to regard individuals of any one nation as particularly charged with moral values, fighting spirit, special will power, etc. These traits are pretty well spread across the human race. You will not find this observation salient in THE LIVING REED. The Koreans are portrayed as a nation of heroes and heroines. That's bunk. They are people just like everyone else. However, it IS true that this is a second-rate novel just like a lot of Buck's others.
Wonderfully portrays the sentiments of Koean people.......1999-09-15
As all of Pearl Buck's novels, this book is wonderfully written. She reveals such understanding of the people and history of Asia. The truly historical setting of this book makes it especially facinating.

Book Description
Designed for the lay reader who has recently been diagnosed with hypertension, this book discusses major symptoms, prevention techniques, risk factors, complications, and treatment and emphasizes self-care, stress management, and empowerment. The information provided in this culturally sensitive book will help African Americans afflicted with hypertension make changes that can dramatically improve their lives by controlling and lowering blood pressure, such as losing weight and switching to a low-sodium diet. Written specifically for the black reader, this book includes frank discussions of racially related stress as a factor in the high number of African Americans with high blood pressure.
Customer Reviews:
Better to learn to live WITHOUT high blood pressure.......2003-04-03
Learning how to take your own blood pressure at home has important information. Moreover, the advice in this book to lose weight and reduce sodium in your diet is good. However, lowering sodium without replacing it with potassium, i.e. increasing the ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, is often futile. People whose diet has a ratio of potassium to sodium over 4 (preferably over 10) almost never get hypertension. By contrast, the average American white has a dietary ratio of 0.6 and the average American black has a dietary ratio of only 0.38.
Unfortunately, the medical profession just can't bring itself to accept that this is the main answer to the plague of hypertension; and of course, the drug companies don't encourage that either.
The idea that psychological stress causes high blood pressure simply doesn't hold up. Provided the dietary ratio of potassium to sodium is above 4, populations with severe stress do not get high blood pressure.
Blacks should consider these simple facts; in rural Africa, blacks almost never get high blood pressure! The part of the world with the LOWEST incidence of both high blood pressure and strokes is West Africa!!! Although this is never mentioned (3 computer searches could not find a reference)in the medical literature, it IS well documented in the anthropology literature. Moreover, I have letters from three medical missionaries telling me their three clinics in Africa did not see a single case of high blood pressure during the last century.
What blacks, and all people, need to learn is how to live WITHOUT high blood pressure. High Blood Pressure is PREVENTABLE and (the medical profession doesn't agree with this) CURABLE since the cause IS known. You can find this information in both my book (The High Blood Pressure Solution) and in Dr. Julian Whitaker's book (Reversing Hypertension).
All about the Silent Killer.......2003-03-04
High Blood Pressure (HBP) is an informative guide to living with
hypertension, the silent killer among African-Americans.
The guide is written in layman's terms and informs the reader of all
aspects of detection, treatment and management. The book allows the
reader an opportunity to learn how to take their own blood pressure
and how to purchase the equipment to monitor one's pressure at home.
HBP clearly outlines the complications from having uncontrolled blood
pressure. It concludes with sections on healthy eating and diet
modifications, stress management and the importance of having a
spiritual foundation in dealing with high blood pressure.
Reed and Hudson have written an easy to read book on a condition that
is treatable. It empowers the reader to become an active part of
their health plan. After reading this book, I made the necessary
calls to have my blood pressure checked.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of fun!.......2007-04-16
This was such a fun book. The hero and the heroine stealing a brooch back and forth between them kept the storyline propelling forward, learning more about each character as we went, and both characters were fully fleshed out.
One of the things that most impressed me about this book was the way that Hern wrote her heroine, Isabel. Isabel is trying to marry a wealthy man -- and neither she nor the hero consider that something to apologize for. She has good reasons, and the ultimate choice to stay with the hero is very sweet, and earned. This book has definitely made Candice Hern one of my authors to look for.
Three, maybe three & 1/2 stars.......2005-02-21
I got tired of the back-and-forth thievery about the same time that Richard did, so the "real" theft was welcome. One of the best parts of this book was the story behind the missing brooch. It was almost better than the main romance.
Isabel is mercenary, but part of that is a desire to care for her relatives. And she's one smart cookie. So much so that Richard has to admire her abilities to get one over on him. Richards's a lovely hero, but he doesn't really stand out from the crowd of fine romantic heroes.
This isn't Hern's finest work, but it is a pleasant diversion, and I'm not sorry I bought it. She always puts the reader into the period.
Clever and Sweet Regency Romance.......2005-01-18
Now that the war was over, Richard, Viscount Mallory had finally come home to find his aged grandfather ailing with very little time left. Cornered by his grandmother, she demanded that he go and recover the Mallory heart, an exquisite heart shaped ruby brooch Mallory family heirloom that had been missing for the last fifty years, so that his grandfather could die happy over it's return. It had been spotted at a recent ton affair and he was to travel to London and retrieve it by whatever means possible. It had to be fate, for the moment he'd entered the ballroom he discovered the brooch, and it was pinned upon the bosom of the very beautiful Lady Isabel Weymouth! Managing to include himself in one of her `at homes' he slipped out of the drawing room to discover that all was not as it appeared as he searched for the lady's brooch. Finding the other rooms stripped of any treasures, clearly, her financial condition was not as she attempted to portray - could she possibly be a jewel thief?
Lady Isabel, was a darling of the ton, and desperately in need of securing for herself a wealthy husband. Although, she was very much aware of the Major Lord Mallory, she new that the Earldom he was to inherit was in financial difficulty, and desperately needing cash to help her family, she simply had to marry for money. In keeping up appearances, she had borrowed her grandmother's magnificent brooch that she'd known was hidden in a secret drawer in grandmothers jewelry box. She had planned on returning it the following day, yet discovering it missing, Isabel knew exactly who had stolen it. Isabel was determined to steal it back and as the two became embroiled in a game of one-up-man-ship in stealing it back from one another the games began to heat up, as did their undeniable passion.
*** This was a delightful romance as the protagonists each devised clever ways of stealing the brooch from one another. The Latin inscription of "True love knows but one" proved to be a very prophetic statement as Isabel discovered that all the wealth she desperately needed and was offered by another was just not enough when her heart and passions were lost to another. Other than the brooch, there wasn't a tremendous amount of intrigue and the inclusion of a mysterious woman whom Richard's brother had fought and lost a duel over was so insignificant to the story that I truly wondered why it was included at all. The main mystery of how the brooch came to be held by Isabel's grandmother was appealing and the protagonists' efforts to keep it from one anther entertaining. Although not a keeper, it deservedly scores well as a worthy read. ---- Marilyn, for www.romancedesigns.com ---
Good - but a little ligher than I prefer!.......2005-01-02
After reading a couple of Coulter books I guess I feel that books like this one are a little light for my complete satisfaction! Nicholas and Isabel just needed a little more development for my taste - at least if I am going to give it a 5 star rating. This one proabably falls somewhere between a 3 & 4 for me - giving it the higher only because I might be more critical right now because I just read some really amazing books. I enjoyed the plot of this book and found the romance to be credible it just needed a little more of something! Actually one of the best most romantic parts was why the ruby broach was given to M and how the love between these old soles never ended. Hopefully the love between Nicholas and Isabel will be that strong and last as long.
It Was OK...Not a Keeper.......2004-12-31
A very light read. The beginning was fun with Richard and Isabel matching wits with one another, trying to out-do each other with their thievery. But then by the middle it started to slow down and I wasn't so involved any more. I found the love scenes to be one dimensional and too simple. I felt no heat whatsoever. The story just dragged on and on, I could even jump three paragraphs or a whole page ahead and not miss anything. I lost all interest in all of the characters. Not a keeper, IMO. For a great read, try her series starting with 'Once a Dreamer'.
