Book Description
The English debut of one of Spain's most dazzling younger writers -- a postmodern murder mystery set in ancient Greece.
In this brilliant, highly entertaining, and intriguing novel, Jose Carlos Somoza intertwines two darkly compelling riddles, forcing us to confront the ways in which we interpret reality.
In ancient Athens, one of the pupils of Plato's Academy is found dead. His idealistic teacher Diagoras is convinced the pupil's death is not as accidental as it appears, and asks the famous Heracles Pontor, the "Decipherer of Enigmas," to investigate. As the death toll rises, the two men find themselves drawn into the dangerous underworld of the Athenian aristocracy, risking their own lives to solve the riddle of these young men's deaths. Simultaneously, a second plot unfolds: that of the modern-day translator of the ancient text, who, as he proceeds with his work, becomes convinced that the original author has hidden a second meaning in the text, one that can be interpreted through certain repeated words and images. As the story advances, however, the translator is alarmed to discover references to himself, which seem to address him personally in an increasingly menacing fashion.
An original and unsettling literary mystery, The Athenian Murders introduces a beguiling new talent to an American readership.
Customer Reviews:
just a shade too derivative.......2006-08-27
I should warn you now - coninue reading this review and it might just spoil your reading of The Athenian Murders. And I don't want to do that, because this novel is a cracking read that kept me engrossed till the final page. Both Heracles and the Translator are finely-drawn protagonist's who offer an intriguing point of view on the unfolding narrative. However, around the halfway point I began to suspect I had seen all this before. And eventually I figured it out. As the movie buffs say, The Athenian Murders is The Secret History meets Sophie's World. Still, there is no such thing as a new story in this world. If neither of the previously referenced novels are familiar to you, you will greatly enjoy Somoza's classical whodunnit. If you are familiar with both those novels - why are you still reading when I warned you not to in the first sentence?
A Trying Read!.......2005-07-14
A unique story in a number of ways. It takes place at the time that Plato started his Academy, and there are references to him both personally and in descriptions of his institution. The murder mystery deals with the kind of reasoning that is most familiar in the fictional detectives Hercule Poirot or perhaps Sherlock Holmes. And then there is the mysterious recognition of a modern day translator that he is actually inserted into this millennia-old text.
In all, I found the book unsatisfying. The conclusions were not complete and left a lot (too much) for the reader to figure out. With all the novelty of the read, it was very trying.
Philosophy with Murder on the Side.......2004-11-25
At first appearances a murder mystery set in Athens at the time of Plato. A young man, Tramachus, is found dead, apparently killed by wolves, but suspicions remain. The youngster's former tutor, Diagoras employs the help of Herakles, a decipherer of enigmas, to explain the odd behaviour of Tramachus before his death. The mystery deepens with a further death and continues to weave itself around Athens, the Academy, the Piraeus, the law courts, and draws heavily upon philosophical and cultural references.
The plot, however, is on more than one level - the narrator, by means of footnotes, is the translator of an edition of the Greek text. Both reading for the first time and translating, he perceives that the text holds a second, hidden, meaning within. As he progresses, he comes to suspect that the text is making direct references to him, and then events in his life take a strange and sinister turn.
A superb novel which will make the reader think. The intriguing double plot and the discussions of reader, ideas and texts reminded me somewhat of Borges, for this is essentially a philosophical novel, not a genre mystery. A basic familiarity with the classical background will enhance the reading pleasure.
Noam Chomsky, Douglas Hofstaetter and Umberto Eco all in one.......2004-06-21
Phantastic read in the true sense of the word. Although indeed sometimes apparently 'unsubtle' and heavy going, the incredible finish justifies it all. The 'detective novel' is just the window dressing, albeit well done pastiche.
If one enjoys word games, self reference and some (light) philosophy, this is the book to read
Much more than a mystery novel.......2004-03-04
One of the most original new works of fiction of this past year is THE ATHENIAN MURDERS. It is a multifaceted and multilayered novel that is much more than an historical mystery. The story concerns the translator as much as the Greek characters. Ultimately, it asks the question, what is reality?
In Ancient Greece, the body of a young man turns up in a field and is initially assumed to be the result of a hunting accident. The body was consumed by wolves. However, Diogoros, the youth's tutor at the academy, wants the death investigated. He hires Heracles Pontor who is called "the Decipherer of Enigmas" to look into the matter. Diogoros decides to accompany Herakcles and so we have the investigator and his foil (or Watson). As more bodies start turning up, it soon becomes apparent that there is no question that a murder did occur .
At the same time, the translator begins to notice more and more of the text is aimed almost directly at himself and conveys that to the reader by his use of footnotes. This subplot eventually becomes as critical as the actual text of the novel.
THE ATHENIAN MURDERS is not simply a murder mystery. It is much deeper than that. It questions our very existence and, as such, becomes almost a philosophical treatise. The presence of Plato lends added weight to the ideas espoused. This unique novel was nominated for two separate dagger awards by the CWA of Great Britain. It was nominated for the Gold Dagger for crime fiction, as well as, the Ellis Peters Award for best historical mystery novel. This should indicate how hard it is to truly categorize. However, one thing in which there is little doubt is that it is a truly superior reading experience albeit somewhat unfocused.

GUYS - GET THIS BOOK FOR YOUR GIRL.......2005-05-29
Ah-hem, despite the title I, a manly-man, thougth it a great read too.
I cam across this book in my store and was going to list it on Amazon. Then I noticed that it had five stars. OK, that got me curious. Started to read it and loved each story (each story is only about 3 pages). Must be my touchy-feely side.
So now I'm bringing it home to my better half along with a Symphony bar. Not a bad idea if I say so myself!
Let's Fall in Love.......2001-12-02
I am a fan of Chicken Soup type books, so I figured that this book would be along those lines and not disappoint. I was not wrong, and was delighted to find that I, a single woman never married, was actually inspired to consider looking for love again. The stories are honest and down to earth, and I like how the women are profiled along with information for contacting them at the end of the book. Potential readers should know that many of the writers appeared to have a new age bent in their beliefs, that didn't put me off necessarily, but might bother those with a more traditional way of thinking. I was able to take like I liked along those lines, and leave the rest, focusing instead, on the hopefulness of this book. I will say, that having read this, I want to read all the books in this series, so this was a good book to start with.
A book to curl up to and indulge in!.......1999-10-02
This book to me can sometimes seem to be my best friend. I know it sounds weird, but when I'm really feeling down I just read a couple of these short stories and my HEART is filled with warmth. It makes you feel happy inside, knowing that miracles can come true. It makes you forget about your problems for a while, just enough to get you threw life.
Couldn't put it down. Need more wonderful books like this........1998-06-03
What a great way to spend the day, reading stories from other women on life and experiences. Makes the world seem like a better place. If lifts your spirits and sweetens your soul and heart!!

We always want what we don't need.......2005-07-30
This book is about a young women by the name of Kayla and her struggles to find a good man. She meets a bunch of losers and then Wil comes along, another looser, then Samir comes along and she has to choose the one that she loves but don't need and the one that she needs but don't love. This is one of my favorite books. I thought I was the only one experiencing what Kayla experiences. I could relate to it from start to finish.
yo yo no love.......2005-07-23
Yo Yo love was defintely not what I expected. This a tale about Kayla, a young college student, who is pressed to find love. At some points her strong desire to have love and to be loved seemed clicheish and typical. The author sets the stage for the main idea of the story by rambling on and on about why Kayla is searching for love (apparently she has wanted to be in love since watching soap operas at the young age of 4). On her quests, Kayla, jumps at every bit of male attention and ends up making some huge mistakes. When she finds love, or so she thinks, she finds that their love is filled with secrets. Overall, not a bad story, but poorly scripted. There's no real depth in any of the characters. However, it makes you want to continue reading to know the answer to the question that the book is written around, "will Kayla ever find love?" In the end, she learns a lesson of independence, that is overshadowed by the possibility of a past love re-entering her world.

Book Description
KROH: The Greening of a Small Planet
In this satire on the global economy, a diverse group of nineteen Earthlings (including an Economist, a Navajo, two Politicians, a Rabbi, a Psychiatrist, a Duck, and two Crocodiles) travels to the planet Kroh to see if it is ripe for trade with Earth.
Some in the Delegation bring along schemes that will help them profit personally, without regard for the planet's inhabitants and ecology. Others are on quests of self-discovery. The Krohtians, teddy-bearish creatures with the minds of men, are happy to see the visitors come, and glad to see them go.
CROC: Love and Power Politics in Swamptown, YO
In this political satire, two deeply-in-love, star-crossed crocodiles run for the same U.S. Senate seat on opposite tickets. Crocadolly, a Demodile, runs on an ecology platform. Young Rockadial, innocent stooge of greedy old Crockafeller, runs against big government and Federal taxation, as a Repelican.
Not for the faint of heart, this extremely funny yarn can turn deadly and tragic as suddenly as a crocodile striking its prey.
All author's royalties will go to protect and increase wildlife habitats.

Nina Galen is the mother goose for our generation!
Galen has a way of turning a cruel reality into humor and forces you think twice.
The biting satire of Croc/Kroh.......2000-04-01
Here we have something unusual -- two works in prose no less -- and under one cover. The diverse set of characters in each work display what is both good and bad within ourselves. In "Croc" we find a couple of crocodiles battling for their political lives -- with a love interest spicing things up even more. The other half of the book deals with a group of what might be called "self-centered, self-serving, sanctimonious hypocrites" who for mostly nefarious reasons, embark upon a space voyage to the alien world of Kroh. And in the end...... Well, that would spoil it! The satire is biting and multi-layered. And a few spots might even require a hanky. The author has packed a lot into her brief lines and a second and third reading brings even more to the stories. Highly recommended!
