Matthias Lane is the proud gatekeeper to countless objects of desire, the greatest among them being T.S. Eliot's letters to Emily Hale. Now in his late 60s and archivist at an unnamed East Coast university, Matthias is--as one of his colleagues tells him--"exceptionally well defended." He's intent on keeping the Hale collection equally remote, and when a young poet first seeks access, Matthias rebuffs her with little difficulty. Still, Roberta Spire does remind him of his wife, Judith, who had also written poetry but had committed suicide 20 years earlier. And he is much taken with the student's self-possession: "Pleading never works with me," he concedes, "but authentic and angry self-interest does."

Betrayal figures heavily in The Archivist. For starters, Roberta feels betrayed by her parents, German Jews who had spent World War II in hiding and emigrated to the U.S. soon afterward, re-creating themselves as Christians. She has only recently discovered her Jewish background. The irony is that Matthias's wife had also been an Eliot adept and had felt violated by a false version of her own past and destroyed when confronted with the realities of the Holocaust. No wonder Roberta sees the Hale letters as a Holy Grail, the key to her questions about religious conversion and identity.

What holds this exceptionally ambitious and layered first novel together is the love all three main characters have for the pleasures of the text and the knowledge they share that time is, as Eliot writes, both preserver and destroyer. Eliot, after all, had wanted Emily Hale to destroy his letters (and in reality they are sealed until 2020, safe at Princeton University). Martha Cooley is deeply concerned, as are her characters, with questions of conscience, privacy, action and inaction, and security--personal and scholarly. If there is one parallel too many in this impressive work, perhaps that is more like life than some of us care to admit. --Kerry Fried

4 out of 5 stars A triple, not a homerun.......2007-08-03

Archivist Matthias Lane and his wife Judith lose themselves in jazz, poetry, and books. They are in the business of forgetting the Holocaust their families suffered. TS Eliot speaks for them in paradox: caring, not caring, etc. Judith is plagued with the forgetting, and the guilt of it. The attempt to know who she is becomes a manic obsession, and her personality begins to shatter. Matthias places her in Harden, an institution for the insane. Dr. Clay gets nowhere trying to withhold knowledge of the world from her and then bars her family from visiting. It's no cure.
Roberta Spire comes to Matthias' library looking for Eliot's letters to his mistress- hoping they will help her deal with her perceived losses. She too is attempting to know who she is. She's more focused, and Matthias is helpful in slow stages. He seems to have learned not to try to shield, downplay, or hide emotion and events. Though Judith's journal entries go on too long, and Matthias' emotional emptiness is not as clearly defined as one might like, the book is good in that Matthias' need to find himself resonates. And there is hope of redemption.
A first novel for Ms. Cooley. There will be greater books to come from her, I bet.

4 out of 5 stars Literary, Cool and Elegant.......2007-02-04

The story of the relationship between a university archivist and a passionate younger woman graduate student/poet who seeks to uncover the yet-to-be-released letters of T.S. Eliot. An absorbing read, reminiscent of A.S. Byatt's POSSESSION, where there is a literary story within a story. Elegant writing and lots of interesting tidbits about Eliot's religious and philosophical views.

5 out of 5 stars Passion in still corridors of poetry.......2005-10-26

The intellectual has a heart, and it beats beneath the skin as surely and as powerfully as that of the emotional romantic. This is the reminder in Martha Cooley's fine novel, "The Archivist" -- that there can be passion even where there is restraint, that there can be hatred even if it is never given voice, that there can be love even when it must be denied.

"The Archivist" is a simple story, a man who works in the archives of a prestigious library, maintaining collections of the rarest of rare materials, including a series of hundreds of letters written by the poet T.S. Eliot to a woman named Emily Hale. This collection of Eliot's letters is a bequest, meant to be held onto and not released to anyone for many years to come. These letters also act as the fulcrum of the story that unfolds, both thematically and literally.

Matthias, the archivist, has his routine disturbed by a young woman named Roberta, a poet who is determined to see Eliot's letters. In talking with Roberta and getting to know her, Matthias is drawn inexorably down the road of his past, remembering his wife, also a poet, who killed herself. These two intersections of time, Matt's past with his wife and Matt's present as he gets to know Roberta, are further tied to revelations about T.S. Eliot himself, his own wife Vivienne, and the unique relationship he shared with Emily Hale.

It is this level of intricacy, one layer of story peeling back to not only reveal further layers, but to intertwine with them, that gives "The Archivist" such a magical tone throughout. Though the basic story idea is simple (no massive conspiracies or plots here -- just a lonely man, his work, and his memories), Cooley turns it quickly into something rare and fragile, the sort of story where one misstep could cause utter failure. But she never missteps or errs in what she tells or how she tells it. These characters, how their past and present are tied together in their love for the same poet and the regrets left over after World War II, how their lives come to intermingle, fray apart, then come together again, is nothing short of remarkable.

Cooley's subtlety and restraint throughout "The Archivist" is admirable, and calls to mind "The Remains of the Day." Both are novels in which the reader can sense the passions and deep feelings of the characters running just under the surface, but unlike other authors she never overplays it. It never comes bursting out in a final rush of unbridled emotion -- instead, it flows steadily but cautiously forward and leaves the reader to enjoy the trip.

In too many novels, the author will focus on either the mind or the heart. Either the story is heavily intellectual while almost devoid of real emotion, or it goes the other way, giving free rein to emotion while downplaying or just ignoring the capacities of reason. "The Archivist" skillfully mixes both aspects, and tells a deceptively simple tale of a man, two of the women in his life, a poet, and a culture at war with itself.

Truly, a remarkable novel.

4 out of 5 stars A literary thriller of sorts.......2005-09-16

This is not the type of book I thought I'd like. I have absolutely no interest in Manhattan intellectual life in the 40s &50s, no interest in poetry, & no interest in T.S. Eliot whom I consider a pompous depressing wannabe-Englishman. Yeah, OK, I have no appreciation for poetry. I admit it. But having said that, I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting. They were real people you could care about. The plot was clever & had an element of mystery that kept me turning the pages. A good read even if you're not a literary buff.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the read.......2005-09-07

I loved this book. I read it in holiday and was totally absorbed by it. It is a first novel and sometimes you can tell as it is carefully planned and written but I couldn't put it down and yet at the same time didn't want to finish it. I felt the characters were 'real people' and I learnt a lot from the history and attitudes of the characters.

Book Description

Reading Ashley Warlick is like listening to the bluesy heartbreak of a country song. Set in the landscape of the new South, with its aging farms and low-rent strip malls, Seek the Living tells the story of a strong-minded young woman whose past catches up with her. When Joan Patee's wayward brother, Denny, breaks one heart too many and takes a beating for it, their father sends Joan to set him straight. Since her mother's death, Joan has had to keep the peace between these two proud men. She yearns for the support of her husband, Marshall, whose job keeps him constantly on the road. His visits home are all too brief, filled with a passion made even more urgent by their desire to have a child. Joan finds Denny worse off than she expected. After losing a string of odd jobs, he's tending an old churchyard and hiding out with an enigmatic new girlfriend. And he's onto a money-making scheme: he has discovered some artifacts in unmarked graves that may date to the Civil War, and he intends to profit from them, legally or otherwise. Joan turns for help to the only person she can think of, an old friend from their wild youth, the renegade Lewis, a man of great charm and dubious wealth. Through Denny and Lewis, Joan is drawn into a spiral of shady dealings and peculiar town secrets, some dangerously close to her heart. For years she has harbored the memory of a willful affair that ended tragically. As Denny unearths hidden graves, Joan unearths long-buried emotions that threaten to harm everyone she loves. "Seek the Living is a deeply wise and sensual rumination on the hard secrets of love and family," writes novelist Stewart O'Nan. Ashley Warlick's compassionate voice, at turns brashly carnal and bittersweet, is, in the words of Gail Godwin, "an occasion for rejoicing."

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Popular Fiction..........2005-07-24

As I read Warlick's "Seek the Living," I was reminded of Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" and the ways in which Faulkner's characters reveal complexities that reach beyond the telling of a good tale to ring out the potential recklessness and restlessness within us all. The universality of Warlick's work; how she creates moments of vast poignancy; how she captures the tensions of self/family/place; how she masterfully generates passion and longing for what may be, what was, and what could have been; all of this sets Warlick's novel apart as a work of art - true literature. Poetic and introspective, the voices and experiences of Warlick's characters at once encourage us to question the certainty of and to embrace the ambiguity within our own lives. This novel will carry you away.

4 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading.......2005-05-02

I've been a fan of Ashley Warlick since her debut novel, THE DISTANCE FROM THE HEART OF THINGS. One of my favorite novels of recent years.

Her follow up, THE SUMMER AFTER JUNE was quite good, if not up to her first.

Now, comes her third novel, SEEK THE LIVING.

Once again, Warlick proves she is one of the strongest Southern writers working today. There are many paragraphs that you read, then have to just reread they are so beautifully written.

There really isn't much in the way of story here, following a married woman in South Carolina, dealing with her brother, her father and various childhood friends. Up until the second half of the novel, not much happens. But, you really don't mind you are so caught up in the writing.

As far as her previous work, I don't think this is up there with her first, but I think I enjoyed it more than SUMMER.

Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars nuance and wisdom.......2005-02-18

Ashley Warlick writes sentences that are as smooth as silk and as sharp as a glass shard. And these wonderful sentences lead us into another of her Southern families with heartaches, secrets, joys, feints, and resolutions. As always in Warlick's books, she deciphers the body language of her characters with an unerring and subtle wisdom.
One test of a novel is to put the first and last words together to see what note they ring about the novel: SEEK THE LIVING's would be "when . . . land". And yes, this is a novel about the pressures of the past and its shaping and settling in the present.
We all know her characters; we meet folks just like them on the streets and in the strip malls everyday. Now we know them better.

5 out of 5 stars thought-provoking and stylish.......2005-01-30

I would add to the other positive reviews that this book has some good humor, especially in the middle, as well as suspense and surprise, especially towards the end. Although it reads and entertains as well as an airport store kind of book, it has much more depth and artistry. Warlick has an exceptional ability to evoke a mood or arouse a feeling in creative ways, with the barest of small but precise touches. She's skillful at using ambiguity effectively in dialogue and character development. Her characters are not ordinary or typical people, but nor are they unbelievable; at a party with a cross-section of society, they're the select ones you'd catch yourself watching from a distance now and then during the night. I didn't want to reach the end of the book, and I found myself contemplating the characters long after I had.

5 out of 5 stars Great talent.......2005-01-26

Ashley Warlick's newest novel Seek the Living is her latest addition to a body of work that continues to showcase an incredible talent from a wise and deft storyteller. Joan Patte joins Warlick's previous creations, Mavis Black (Distance from the Heart of Things) and Lindy Jain (Summer After June) as a woman fully entrenched in her family and her place, for better or worse, as she struggles to simultaneously live with the heartaches of her past and desires for her future. Joan is, appropriately, an archivist who charts the minute details of her state (South Carolina) for a private foundation. She is the cornerstone of her family, a consequence of her mother's death, and finds herself facilitating a tenous relationship between her father and brother. Joan longs for her sweet, patient, and frequently absent husband with whom she is having difficulty conceiving a child. Along with mourning her mother's death, she is still haunted by a former lover whose death may have interrupted a completely different course for Joan's life. Ultimately, Joan's strength lies in her ability to visit the graves of her past without falling in. Warlick's prose is honest and clean, balancing darkness and light as only Southern writers can. Book Description

This rich, mature novel follows a few years in the life of T. J. Quill, a middle-aged Dubliner trapped in a passionless marriage, who is soon lured into an affair with the voluptuous Josie, a woman he only half-understands. Meanwhile, through a doomed friendship with a producer named "Thorn" Thornton, Quill becomes embrangled with a staging of a Plautus satire (retitled Lust). It's a memorable production which premieres outdoors, at night, during a hurricane. But just when Quill's career seems on the skids, it receives a much-needed boost when he is hired as the archivist to the late, great Western filmmaker, Sean O'Fearna, and finds himself matching wits with the director's flamboyant and feckless widow. This is a darkly comic tale of fluctuating friendships and rivalries on Dublin's creative fringes that makes subtle jabs at people's desire to reinvent themselves. Hugh Leonard has written an extraordinary first novel about marriage, adultery, friendship, and a lifelong love of film. A Wild People is a brilliant, modern novel of manners by one of Ireland's most prominent and popular playwrights. AUTHORBIO: Hugh Leonard is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter, and was literary editor at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. His plays include the Tony Award-winning Da and the Tony-nominated A Life. He has written extensively for British television and has published two volumes of autobiography, Home Before Night and Out After Dark. He lives in Dalkey, Ireland.

3 out of 5 stars Female Fighter Pilot and Hunky 19th Century Pirate Make a Future Together.......2005-09-02

ONCE A PIRATE by Susan Grant is a paranormal romance in which a female fighter pilot is swept back into the 19th century and is captured by a handsome English pirate who intends to use her to get vengeance on a Duke.

What I liked best about this book was how it wrapped-up at the end, explaining that Carly's time-travel was no fluke, but rather the fate of two soul mates.

What I didn't like was the author's "tell, don't show" approach, in which we are told that Carly becomes friends with all the pirates and that Carly and Andrew are falling in love, but doesn't devote any initial scenes showing it. That's why I really didn't believe it the first time Andrew thought he was falling in love with her. Why would he? There was nothing in their interactions that screamed "love"; maybe lust (she's the only female on the ship, for crying out loud), but not love.

Any way, I liked Andrew. He was a sweet hero - too, sweet, perhaps for a man who is supposed to be a pirate - but definitely a good guy to root for. Carly's interesting as a heroine, though I personally didn't like her. She comes across as tough, for she is a navy pilot, yet her insecurities, as well as her sob story about why she hates rich men, bugged me rather than made me feel sympathetic.

Overall, the book is an entertaining read. It'll keep you interested. As time-traveling romances go, it's original with its pirate theme. However, time-traveling aside, I don't think it's realistic. Pirates weren't that nice and lovable. Nor did I believe in Andrew and Carly's love. But that's just me.

***For those interested in time-traveling romances, A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR by Jude Devereaux is probably the best one I've ever read. Period. Also look for BREATH OF MAGIC by Theresa Medeiros or THE AUTUMN LORD by Susan Sizemore. All three are fabulous books. Oh, and if you want to read about real pirates, try the nonfiction book UNDER THE BLACK FLAG by David Cordingly. It's eye-opening!***

4 out of 5 stars A love that reaches across time..........2004-02-05

When Carly Callahan's jet crashes into the sea she hopes to be rescued, but not by 19th century pirates! Andrew Spencer believes that he has snatched his stolen cargo, Lady Amanda, from the sea as the very ship carrying her sinks to the ocean floor. When she states that she is not Lady Amanda, that her name is really Carly and she is from the future, he believes her to be daft. Once A Pirate offers a nice blend of adventure, romance, and has the hero and heroine not only battling some nasty villains, but time itself. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A book you won't be able to put down..........2003-05-16

Lieutenant Carly Callahan had always loved to fly. When flying over the Atlantic Ocean, she encounters a storm and has to eject from her jet. She is rescued almost at once by a man who reminded her of a nineteenth century pirate. Everything from his clothes to his ship tell her that she made the incredible feat of traveling through time. As her panic increases, so does her desire for her captor, whom she feels she has known and loved. If this isn't enough for her to handle, Andrew believes that she is Lady Amanda, his Duke cousin's betrothed. With plans to ransom her for revenge, Carly has six weeks to convince him that she's not who he thinks she is.

Sir Andrew Spencer has suffered at the hands of his father's family. With thoughts of revenge, Andrew takes Amanda captive. He didn't plan on the pull he felt toward her, nor the dreams that he can't stop having. In every dream he is trying to save the woman he loves, but is unable to help her. He has dreams of metal and helicopters, something that doesn't even exsist in his time. Over the course of their journey, Andrew finally excepts the awesome possibility that Carly came to him from the twentieth century.

This is a great book with where emotions run high. Grant portrays Carly and Andrew who are solemates in many lives. I couldn't put it down and read it in less than one day!

What a great, engaging read! Daniel Tremeyne is convinced that Morgan Fisk the pirate has killed one of his employees, the captian of one of his ships. Because he hunts down pirates for King George and Morgan is a nuisance to the crown, Daniel is plenty motivated to see Morgan swing from the business end of a rope. Except he doesn't plan on her clever mind and her beauty. Both surprise him, and Daniel is forced to examine Morgan's motives for piracy while trying to fight his growing attraction for her. Morgan is a gutsy, take charge female with enough vulnerability to be real. Daniel is overwhelming at times. Big, sleek and sometimes angry, he is all man--and Morgan occasionally finds herself at a loss. Eventually these two souls come to understand each other and forge a great love. Before we get there, however, the sexual tension and story pacing will leave you breathless. This is is too much fun! Don't miss out!

I have a weak spot for pirate stories and Tammy Hilz did not disappoint me. With a gutsy heroine and a sexy protective hero filled with swashbuckling adventure and humour, other romance fans will not be disappointed either! This book is the first in a series about the heroine and her two sisters and if the other books that follow are as strong as this one...I will be looking forward to the rest of the series with great anticipation!

              Book Description

Once upon a princess and Once upon a pirate are innovative new sticker books that make it possible for children to make up hundreds of different stories about princesses or pirates. The story is told using rebus techniques, and the reader completes the story with the stickers, deciding what their princess will wear, and where she will go next or what the pirate will do and what he discovers. As the stickers are re-usable, the book can be used again and again, to tell hundreds of different stories. There are four sheets of re-usable vinyl stickers bound into the book, containing more than one hundred stickers. Once the stickers have been pushed out, they can be stored in pockets at the back of the book. With beautiful photography throughout, young children will be delighted and drawn into a magical world that encourages story-telling and stimulates their imagination.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Childhood favorite.......2006-05-04

I forked over 30 bucks to get an old copy of this book so my my two young kids could have a taste of this great pirate adventure tale. When it finally came in the mail and I opened it, I was quickly reminded why my brothers and I loved this book so much - probally because of the fun, detailed illustrations and of course identifying with the group of youngsters who leave the village harbor in their row boat only to find themselves coming face to face with a real pirate ship and it's crew of friendly pirates (or at least most of them). The reader follows the childrens adventures they encounter on the ship and out at sea. Another delightful aspect of this book is the fact that there is no traditional text but rather fun quotes and captions over the various charaters heads - even the ship's mermaid figurehead has lines. I'm glad I was able to track down a copy and in my opinion it was worth the extra $. I'm not surprised it's a household favorite.

I found my old Once Upon a Pirate Ship book in a box. I pulled it out and now my 4 year old son has me read it to him every night. There is so much going on in every page of the book. My son really loves the swordfish with the jagged nose.

I had this one as well when I was young! What an adventure! My mother still has my copy but I would love to find one for my little ones!
