In Signed, Sealed and Delivered, author Larry Gross explores the lives of everyday people, but as each story unfolds, we find there's nothing ordinary about them at all. Intriguing and interesting, each story delves into interpersonal relationships:
A businessman comes to realize an old friend is really just an opportunist and has a long-delayed confrontation.
Throughout the fifteen stories in his collection, Gross delivers the absorbing tales of these seemingly-common people in his straightforward style and with absolute clarity.
Customer Reviews:
If you like Raymond Carver, Maybe..................2006-07-09
A few days back, I bought the Amazon short "Charlie Gets Ready for Work," written by Larry Gross. I liked it so much, I went ahead and purchased his book of short stories.
Amazon delivered it a couple days ago and I read it in one night. It's certainly not a long book but a great collection of short stories.
As I was reading, I couldn't help but think of Raymond Carver - my all time favorite short story writer. Gross' work reminds me of Carver - short, to the point, dark little tales. The title story is the first in the book and aftet that, you just WANT to continue to read.
I'll be telling my friends about this find. Larry Gross is a very interesting author - one to look out for.
OUTSTANDING SHORT STORIES.......2006-04-23
I'm aware of Mr. Gross who writes a column here in Cincinnati for CityBeat which is a weekly alternative newspaper. His column is called "Living Out Loud," and just like his column, these stories are a little out there.
I got interested in purchasing this book when I read an interview with him by D.B. Wells in CityBeat. D.B. is another really good local writer and the two of them somehow really hit it off in the interview. Anyway, I ordered the book and it's really good. Mr. Gross doesn't mess around. His stories are really to the point and dead-on honest. The stories are dark, no doubt about that - but if you like real life stories told in a very honest way, you should buy this book.
Wonderful Short Stories.......2006-03-10
I lived in Cincinnati for a few years, attending U.C. College, and got interested in a column that Gross writes for CityBeat called "Living Out Loud." I'm now back home in New Jersey, but I continue to read his work on CityBeat's website. When I found out he had a book out, I had to order it.
A few of these stories have appeared in CityBeat, but most are original - at least to me. If I said Gross wasn't dark, I would be lying. So many of his characters are very flawed but that's part of what makes them so enjoyable. His characters are real and they deal with real life. This book is labeled as fiction but because I know his work so well, I sometimes can't tell where the truth begins and the fiction starts. It's an very interesting talent that he has and he's a damn good writer.
For those who are just now finding him, check out his Living Out Loud column at citybeat.com. He has just written a story for that column called "The Taxi Driver," which is totally exellent. I think he's the voice of the common man and I'm glad to know his words.
Mostly "hits" and few "misses.......2006-02-13
This collection of short stories have gotten mostly good reviews here, so I decided to buy a copy. I have to say I don't like all of them. A few or so short, I don't see the point in putting them in the book - but if you can overlook this, you do get some good stuff here. A lot of the characters in these stories are pretty flawed but you end up seeing yourself in a lot of them and in the end, can relate to them.
"The Birthday Gift" is hard to read, but it's dead on truthful. "Merry Christmas" is another painful one to get through, but I ended up reading it three times and "Friends," the last story in the book is outstanding.
Gross reminds me of Raymond Carver in a way - real life stories and to the point. He missed the target a few times, but all short story writers do from time to time, even Carver.
It's a good read, well worth the ten bucks.
Delightful and Engaging.......2006-02-01
Signed, Sealed and Delivered is a wonderful collection of short stories that will touch you in a deep and personal way. Larry Gross writes from the heart in a clear and direct style that is both refreshing and perfect for the short format. Candles on a Cake is a delightful story of life on an Indiana farm in the 60's as seen through the eyes of a 10 year boy. Gross makes you feel the boy's innocence, ambition, heartbreak and ultimate reconcilliation with his past. Its moving and leaves you quickly turning to the next story for more.
I really like his style..you are absolutely there with him in every setting and situation. Get this book....you'll be glad you did.

This is the best in the series. It's the perfect blend of mystery and teen romance. I've read all the books in the series and this one is the best by far. It kept me guessing until the end. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Three Southern settings, three unique adventures, three complete bestsellers make up this one satisfying volume.
When a plane crash leaves her disfigured beyond recognition, TV reporter Avery Daniels finds herself in the hospital, mistaken for a selfish Texas socialite, the wife of a famous senatorial candidate. Initially unable to communicate, Avery is given plastic surgery that makes her "good as new." Stripped of her identity and completely vulnerable, she learns of an insider's plot to assassinate her "husband"--and she's supposedly in on it. Reporter's instincts may be the initial reason for keeping up the charade, but soon other instincts kick in and Avery finds herself trapped in a world of power, politics, lies, and lust. Mirror Image is full-speed from the start, and doesn't ease up until the final, dramatic showdown.
"Before I'm finished, I'm going to know which one of you killed my mother," proclaims Alexandra Gaither, a striking young attorney out for revenge. Ignited by the cryptic words of her ailing grandmother, Alex storms into a dusty Texas town like a hired gun and reopens the 25-year-old murder case she's not even old enough to remember. Best Kept Secrets takes on the big business of small-town politics. Confronting the three most powerful men in the community, Alex attempts to find the flaw in their carefully constructed history. She's ready for almost every possible complication, every hidden danger except this: her growing desire for one of the prime murder suspects.
Schyler Crandall is back in Heaven--Heaven, Louisiana. The adopted daughter of the most powerful man in town, Schyler ran away years before, distraught over a broken engagement and painful betrayal. Slow Heat in Heaven has been hailed for its "steamy prose," and won Brown the Waldenbooks Award for bestselling single title release. It's the perfect capper for this three-in-one pleasure-fest. --Sara Nickerson

Always a happy ending.......2007-07-18
I enjoyed knowing that these love stories would always have a happy ending. This would be a wonderful relaxing read for the beach.
Not good at all.......2007-07-07
I normally like Sandra Brown's books, however this book of three novels must been very early work. It is so terrible I gave up in disgust and did not finish the last novel. I regret purchasing it.
Get it..it's great!!.......2005-01-21
I happened across this book in a used book store. I'm a fan of Sandra Brown, although I don't cut her any slack when I read one that isn't what I expected. Let's face it, we have to tell it like it really is. But all three of the stories in this one book happen to be some of Sandra's very best writing. Do yourself a favor and get it. I thought it was greeeaaatttttttt!!!!
Liked the first 2, the other was so-so.......2003-04-09
The 1992 edition of this book is riddled with spelling errors and poor punctuation. I found 10 errors alone in SHH. I enjoyed the first 2 novels. I like the mystery aspect of both. The third, SHH was sub-par. I lost interest half-way through. A great bargain overall. Smaller print than most hardcovers.
Sandra Brown is a literaray genius.......2002-01-29
I do not understand where all these bad reviews are coming form, I am a huge Sandra Brown fan, and I think that three stories in one was the perfect idea, by the time I have finished one, I'm ready to go to read all Sandra Browns books, and best kept secrets was one of my favorites, as for some of the other reviews, Sandra Brown writes fiction novels, so they are based soley on the creativity she finds within herself, and I think that she has done a dam good job at keeping us all entertain. No matter what she writes she does it in a way where I can not put the book down!

Book Description
Blair Simpson has embraced a life most people merely dreamed about. Devoting her nights as well as her days to dancing—in the chorus line of Broadway musicals and occasional TV commercials—she had never considered another career. Now an injury has sent her to a small town for six long months of recuperation. All around her are couples who are raising families and building dreams together. And there she meets a man who forces her to come to terms with a part of herself she has long denied.
From her first encounter with her new landlord, Sean Garett, the powerful sexual attraction between them catches her off guard. For the first time she's unable to lose herself in her dancing, as Sean's passion and tenderness urge her to open her life to him. More than anything, Sean wants to build a future with fiery, raven-haired Blair. But Blair's own passion for dance has ruled her for so long, she may not be able to break its hold—even if it costs her the love she had thought she'd never find.
Customer Reviews:
Story is a quick read, however..........2007-05-28
This story is a quick read. I started it noon on a Saturday and finished it Saturday night. I liked the romantic and career dilemmas of the novel but one thing irritated me. The characters fell into it sooooooo quickly. There was NO anticipation or strained anxious moments because they started off in the novel already pretty hot and heavy...even with only knowing each other and hour and some change. If you can get past that little point it's a funny mindless read for a nice afternoon on the deck or on the beach.
A cute, highly romantic story.......2005-10-16
WOW - this book opens with a massage scene that is incredibly sensual and tantilizing, and the hot and steamy tone continues throughout. Sean is a bit too agressive and Blair is a bit too selfish, yet when they come together, they are a powerhouse who teach each other valuable lessons about life, values and priorities. A short and fast read, this book packs a lot of punch.
Average!.......2003-02-06
This was a short story about seduction. I have nothing against seduction. I like it a lot. BUT, you have to care about the characters in order for the seduction to be touching and moving. Ms Brown writed excellent sex/love scenes, but needs to write a good story around them. Skip this book. There are many good books out there to read. Try Madeline Hunter, Mary Balough, Connie Brockway, Jo Beverley, to name a few, if you want good stories with moving intimacy.
Way way to predictable and sweet.......2002-10-19
I found this story to be a bit to predictable for met. It is one of the early romance stories by Sandra Brown. If you are used to her suspense stories this will be a let down.
Blair is a dancer who had injured her knees and moves to a small town where a former dancer friend of hers lives. In this town she meets her landlord and a romance blooms....
This refers to the abridged audio tape version. It may be better in book form it seemed way to predictable in this form.
Sandra Brown at her best.......2001-02-06
This book is sweet and fun to read. These people are like people you might know . . . and that makes it interesting. It is a nice short read and perfect pick-me-up!

Absolutely Heavenly!.......2005-01-22
1896 Yukon Territory
This delightful and sassy tale is about two lost and lonely souls that eventually find a meaning to their lives-together. Their amazingly detailed story is told with feeling with bits of humor thrown in to make this a 5 star read!
Not bad for a first novel.......2004-10-10
2 1/2 stars. I was only reading this because I've decided to go back and read all of Kristin Hannah's books and this is the first one she published. The story was ok, not great. I had a hard time relating to the inner turmoil felt by the two main characters which meant there were times I felt myself frustrated by the interaction between them. This is the second book I've read by Hannah and I definitely liked the other one (Between Sisters) a lot better. But, for a first book, it's not too bad. I was able to read through it quickly enough to be satisfied. The main thing I disliked about the book is the overuse of curse words. They felt unnecessarily abrasive. I understand that they were used to show Stone Man's abrasive personality, but to me, vulgarity is a cheap way to express a point. I'm hoping that as I continue through Hannah's later works I will see that her talent to creatively express such ideas has improved with practice.
Good Heaven.......2003-08-31
What a lovely book. It was very reminiscent of LaVyrle Spencer's writing. I must admit that it was one of the best I've read, and I've read quite a few. I love that it was unglamourous and so real. I read it again right afterward. Wonderful.
"Heaven" in the Yukon wilderness.......2001-12-11
After reading "On Mystic Lake" and "Angel Falls" I became an instant fan of Ms. Hannah's books, thus prompting me to read her earlier works, of which "Handful of Heaven" is her first.
This is a classic example of the old cliche, "never judge a book by it's cover". When I see a book cover showing a semi-clad man and woman in a moment of passion, it gives the implication of a hot, passionate romance from beginning to end. This is indeed a story of romance and passion, but it is also the story of two lonely people, Stone Man and Devon, who have suppressed their respective painful pasts, while co-existing in the adverse elements of a brutal winter in the Yukon, in the late 19th century. As the story evolves we come to know these two people's inner thoughts and desires through how they relate to one another.
This a book to be read by the fireside or snuggled in a warm blanket, lest you get chills (literally) while reading Ms. Hannah's vivid descriptions of the Yukon wilderness in winter.
A Handful in the Yukon.......2000-10-28
A Handful of Heaven is Kristin Hannah's first book, which won several awards. Since I have read all but 2 of her books, I can say that I enjoy her later novels so much better than her earlier works! Hannah's writing embodies that magic which draws readers into the heart and soul of the characters and this can be seen in her earlier novels, but it is more explosive in her later works! Everything about her later novels cries "believable"! I found this book to be not as believable as her other novels and became bored reading it during several parts of it. It was an OK book, but then again I am not much of a reader of historical romance.
Hannah writes of strong heroines who seem to overcome adversity resiliently and are very much in control. Still, I just could not get into this story. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a Harlequin romance, which is not what I was seeking to read - oh well. I felt that Ms. Devon was not quite the believable character I had come to expect from Ms. Hannah.
I have quickly become a die-hard Hannah fan and eagerly await her next book due out early next spring. Hannah's books will not disappoint you and it just depends what kind of "love-story" one is seeking to read. But nonetheless, Hannah remains a true hopeless romantic and this shines in all of her books!

Take one outspoken, sloppy, slightly boozy FBI agent who's too smart for his own good (and never lets the reader forget it) and exile him to a field office in Arizona so he doesn't embarrass the Agency. Tie him to a short tether and bury him in paperwork. Add a double murder and a missing teenager; throw in a little New Age religion (but don't identify it as Scientology, or L. Ron Hubbard's legions will bury you in lawsuits) and you have Kyle Mills's second Mark Beamon thriller. A bit too smug to be likable, Beamon has the case totally figured out before anyone else has a clue. Shortly thereafter, he's pressured to shut down the investigation. When he persists in following a road that leads right to the front door of the powerful Church of the Evolution, he's suddenly targeted by the IRS, labeled a pedophile, and finally suspended. But with the help of an ex-member of the cult, an eager young agent, and a crusty old retired wire tapper, Beamon manages to track down the missing girl and put a crimp in the church's ambitious plans. These include a conspiracy to take over the nation's telecommunications infrastructure and extend the cult's hold over the movers and shakers of the country--including Beamon's boss and other FBI honchos. A tidy little millennial thriller with echoes of Waco, Ruby Ridge, and those comet-happy cultists in San Diego who followed their leader to a higher plane last summer, this should win Mills (author of Rising Phoenix) a legion of new fans. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Punished for his maverick ways, FBI agent Mark Beamon has been exiled from Washington, D.C., to a sleepy Southwest office where he's got one last chance to play by the rules. But that's not going to happen, not when he's on a case that may be too hot even for his unorthodox talents to handle.
A local millionaire and his wife are brutally murdered. Jennifer, their teenage child and sole heir; is the prime suspect -- and she's gone missing. Laying everything on the line, Beamon sets off on a trail that takes him from a remote survivalist's cabin in the Utah mountains, through the labyrinthine headquarters of a cultlike church, into the shadowy, interlocking boardrooms of a powerful high-tech communications empire.
Just when he thinks he's close to finding answers, Beamon discovers the killing of Jennifer's parents is far more sinister than even he could have guessed. Now he isn't just looking for a young girl -- he's got to stop a bizarre conspiracy that could bring America to its knees...

A Review Of Storming Heaven by Kyle Mills.......2007-02-18
Incidents such as Waco, Jonestown, and the Heaven's Gate suicides prove the unique challenge such sects pose to contemporary society because of the threats they represent to both life and liberty while having to balance the need to protect the innocent from this danger yet recognizing these organizations have a right to operate under the First Amendment provided they have not committed what most reasonable people would consider an actual crime. In Storming Heaven, Kyle Mills examines a number of these issues in the form of an action novel.
In "Storming Heaven", FBI Agent Mark Beamon must rescue the daughter of a deceased cult leader before she is sacrificed to ensure that power within the group remains within the hands of those already running the show unbeknownst to even the late sect leader. But even though this race against the clock provides most of the suspense within the novel, readers will also be riveted by the extent to which some will go to seize control in the name of religion.
Though Mills concludes the novel with a disclaimer implying that his story should not be construed as picking on any one sect, it doesn't take too much effort to deduce that the novel reflects concerns regarding Scientology in that the group in the story has a keen interest in courting the influential and its run ins with the German government are central to the plot.
The fictional religion featured in Storming Heaven is known as the Church of Evolution. According to its doctrine, the messenger of God comes to earth at regular intervals throughout history to update His revelation to mankind as humanity's understanding and comprehension expands.
As such, God's spokesman to the present age is Arthur Knesis, who is dying and plans to take his own life and hand leadership of the church over to his granddaughter. However as with such groups here in the real world, self-proclaimed omniscience isn't what it use to be as Knesis' second-in-command Sara Rensiler has secretly taken control of the church to further her own agenda.
"Storming Heaven" provides a fascinating portrayal of what can happen when the ambitious deliberately turn their backs on enduring values in pursuit of fanatic objectives. The Church of Evolution goes so far to achieve its goals as to set up its own long distance carrier in order to ease drop on and ultimately entrap prominent figures for blackmail purposes and to frame the group's opponents with unfounded accusations such as pedophilia.
Yet it is this sense of skepticism and suspicion that also is also the novel's greatest drawback as the motives of this particular cult's leadership are used to basically call into question all religious movements throughout history without taking the time to test the veracity of any of their claims. Despite being motivated by the noble goals of saving the young girl's life and unfurling the vast conspiracy of the Church of Evolution, other than his own existential wherewithal, one gets the impression that FBI Agent Mark Beamon does not have much of a moral support structure to fall back upon to say that the cult is really wrong in its action since all throughout the story it is insinuated that the real danger is any firmly held belief.
Despite a tendency to employ more profanity than is necessary, readers will no doubt enjoy this thriller providing a perspective on a topic seldom examined by authors in the secular branch of this genre.

Not As Good As Rising Phoenix.......2006-08-10
It wasn't as fast paced as Rising Phoenix. I'm not going to write a plot summary because those are provided by Amazon and other reviewers. This book gives you some further details on Mark Beamon's career. It's Kyle Mills second book about him. I enjoyed the story and the character development. Did feel that he wrapped the ending up too quickly and that he didn't give a true ending on what happened. Hopefully that will come in the next book. I recommend this book as a good thriller and an interesting concept about the church.
Another Must Have!.......2006-03-15
I do not know why I hesitated. The suspense is there, and I never got bored. The character and the story line development are fantastic. I can't wait to get the next book.
I 'read' this novel as a book on tape and found it okay but not great.......2005-10-18
I was looking forward to hearing this as a book on tape since I had found another of Mills' books, 'Rising Phoenix' to have been most excellent - thought-provoking, challenging and entertaining.
This one was merely most adequate. It was admirably performed by veteran character actor Joe Grifasi but the ending of the story lacked punch.
'Storming Heaven' was a basic thriller, which left me unsatisfied after having had such an overwhelmingly positive experience with 'Rising Phoenix'.
Don't rush out to find this book. Take your time and look around. You'll probably find something else better.
save your time, skip this book.......2004-10-08
This was the best of the three Kyle Mills books that I have read so far. That is not very high praise when you compare this title to such luminaries of mediocrity as `Free Fall,' and `Burn Factor.' `Storming Heaven' was written prior to the other two novels that I mentioned so it is a little disconcerting to see a de-evolution in Mills' work as the years go by. I haven't read it yet, but maybe `Rising Phoenix,' his first novel will turn out to be his best work.
Storming Heaven is most definitely one of those books that it written with out passion by an author attempting to mold himself to the sure fire rout towards the bestseller list. Every tired and over used method to further along an uninspired plot is used here. I felt like I had read these pages many times before. To put this work into the best possible analogy that I can come up with, it was sort of like watching a re-run of one of those 1980's private eye t.v. shows where you know how it will work out before it even starts.
The saving graces in this book are the protagonist, Mark Beamon who turns out to be better than your average hero type. This is an enjoyable character that is not fleshed out enough in my opinion in this novel. In fact that is the bothersome aspect of all Mill's characters here. It would have been nice to use the decent right wing religious conspiracy angle as a cover to explore a few of these persons in more detail. Instead Mills mistakenly believes that the Hollywood car chase cliché is where the strength of his story unfolds. It is not. Try Lawrence Block's `Scudder' series for some good contemporary tales that put Mills to shame. Or if you have not yet delved into Elmore Leonard, Dashiell Hammett's `Maltese Falcon,' any Raymond Chandler, or a good Jim Harrison, try one of these amazing authors instead.

Book summary.......2007-01-07
Loveswept #1. His strong, callused but gentle hands kneaded the muscles in her legs that had allowed her to dance like a vision before her injury. Blair Simpson had enclosed herself in the magnificent fortress of her dancing, and no man had ever breached the walls of her heart, but Sean Garrett was determined tolove her anyway. His touch ignited fireworks that lit up the heavens and shamed the star-streaked Long Island skies. Blair's body which had never betrayed her before, begged for Sean's tender but impassioned caresses. In his arms she came to understand the emotions behind her dancing. But could she afford the high price of love?
