The Wedding Night of an English Rogue: A Novel
ASIN: 0743417917
Release Date: 2002-10-01 |
Book Description
From Jillian Hunter, a mesmerizing author who "weaves a spell over her audience" (Romantic Times), comes a sensual, witty new novel about an untamed Scottish beauty and a rakish English lord who set each other's souls on fire.
Catriona Grant is desperate. Fleeing a forced marriage in Scotland, she arrives on the doorstep of Rutleigh Hall seeking shelter as a distant relation, only to find that Knight Dennison, the Viscount Rutleigh, may be worse than the man she fled. True to his dangerous reputation, Knight threatens to toss the penniless, flame-haired impostor out -- until she produces the family ring as proof of her identity.
Thrust into the role of guardian, the dark, compelling Knight has his doubts about the lovely Scottish lass, who's clearly keeping secrets -- but her wit, beauty, and artless grace are hard to resist. When his sister starts husband-hunting for Catriona, the idea of any other man possessing her is suddenly unthinkable. For Knight realizes that there's only one possible groom for her: himself!
Customer Reviews:
It's okay........2005-01-16
The hero is quite nice, but the heroine is a bit too odd sometimes. The repartee between them is good and there are steamy love scenes. But the secondary characters are weak or unintentionally creepy and the "magic" is silly, dragging the story down.
A very mixed bag. If I'd read it more recently, I might actually lower the rating.
Romantic but too superficial..........2004-09-14
I thought the romance between Knight and Catriona was very sweet, especially when they were "practice dancing" in the ballroom. I also loved his friend, Wendell. But his sister, Olivia was supposed to be so nice and she was to a degree, but she was out-of-line many times with her "opinions" in Knight's house. Good lord, she was like an annoying mother hen to him. The guy couldn't turn around in his own house without his sister and his servants waiting in the wings to berate him. I didn't really care for Catriona's uncle, Murdo. Truth be told, he gave me the creeps. I did like Lamont Montgomery, although I could never figure out if he was supposed to be a good guy or a bad guy. I found that annoying in the extreme, I guess because I liked him and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like him. The author never made it clear.
Never made it off the ground........2003-03-25
I will give it 2 stars because the characters were likeable; however, the plot never did catch my interest. Also, there were several sub-plots that were thrown in that made it confusing.
What was the deal with Catriona's uncle and his mysterious assistant? This was some other story entirely. Does the author intend a sequel? Also, Catriona's brother had some serious problems including a missing child who was later found. Again, this was another story. Even if there is a sequel that might explain, I am not interested enough to read them. Sorry.
Historical Romance with a Supernatural Twist.......2003-03-14
Catriona Grant has fled her home in Scotland and the man old enough to be her father that her brother was forcing her to wed. She arrives at Rutleigh Hall in the middle of the night searching for the cousin who had been so kind to her only to find that he has been killed in the war and Knight Dennison, the Viscount Rutleigh, may be a fate worse than the one she had fled as Knight appears to have taken an instant dislike of her and her unannounced, unconventional and suspiciously late arrival. He doesn't believe her claims of kinship either until she produces a ring given to her by his deceased brother-in-law. Olivia, Knight's kindly sister, recognizes the resemblance of eyes and is only too happy to take her in resolving to help her in any way she can which is to find her a suitable husband. By the light of the day, Knight is surprised to find Catriona quite striking, once the raggedy clothing has been removed and he gets his first good look at her. As his sister and aunt proceed to launch her into society on the husband hunt - Knight fights the knowledge that the only man to possess her must be him!
Although, this is a historical romance in nature, I was delighted to find some very magical and whimsical elements with tones of the paranormal genre. The heroine's saucy and irreverent comments to the baiting sarcasm of Knight are extremely funny as they both do the `mating dance'. The final capitulation of the pompous Knight and very earthy, and straightforward Catriona was wonderful. The household staff, relatives, and friends were all delightfully eccentric and/or irreverent, with some I hope to see with their own stories some day. This book will make you smile a lot while reading if not laughing right out loud. It's a superb read for the keeper shelf and definitely a new author I will be reading in the future.
humorous offbeat Regency.......2002-12-27
In 1814, escaping from her odious brother's latest nasty scheme of marrying her to a geriatric widower old enough to be her grandfather, Catriona Grant flees her home. In abject poverty, she seeks shelter at a third cousin's estate only to learn he died in battle three years ago. His widow, Olivia resides in the home of her brother, Viscount Rutleigh. Seeing her choices being between her brother and the rakish sibling of her cousin's widow, Catriona takes a chance on the unknown because the known is too devilish for her.
The Viscount Knight Dennison is suspicious of Catriona's claims of blood to his deceased brother-in-law even though she shows a family resemblance and display a family heirloom as proof. Knight investigates his guest while his sister befriends and offers to sponsor her with local society. Knight holds off tossing out Cat because her presence has revitalized his mourning sibling. Soon he finds himself charmed by this Celtic with the gift of sight falling in love with Cat.
Readers need to understand that THE HUSBAND HUNT is an atypical Regency romance though on the surface it contains all the necessary elements of the sub-genre. Instead, the interesting story line includes magical and otherworldly elements that embellish an engaging plot. The characters are a delight as the lead couple is fun to watch as they squabble while falling in love. The support cast comprises of several amusing eccentrics as well as a secondary romance. Readers who relish a humorous offbeat novel need hunt no further than this charming book.

Far from Perfect.......2007-08-02
"He knew his infidelity was not all HER fault..." That sentence, which made me laugh out loud, summarizes the whole book: ridiculous. The author is talking about Kathleen Peterson's first husband, who has the gall to say that his cheating on his wife is not entirely his wife's fault. Gee, what a big man he is. Of course, the guy comes across as the jerk he is, but the problem is that Aphrodite Jones doesn't get it: she takes the guy at face value, as if cheating on his spouse said nothing about him.
Jones also stars out with the description of an ideal evening that is ridiculous considering she believes that Michael Peterson killed his wife on that very evening. She even narrates what was on Kathleen's mind that night--and, unless she's a medium, there was no way for her (or anyone else) to know. The only thing Kathleen Peterson (RIP) was guilty of was a terrible taste in men, and she deserved much better--in her life, in her marriage, and in the book that was written about her. My condolences to her daughter, Caitlin.
Very interesting.......2007-06-25
I have very little patience when it comes to reading. I give a book about 10 pages before I decide if I will continue to read it or not. I was hooked from page one. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found it very interesting and easy to read. I have a very short attention span when it comes to reading and I found this book to be quite engaging.
This was an awesome story!.......2006-08-27
I would put Aphrodite Jones right up there with Ann Rule as far as writing true crime books. This story was captivating and has somewhat of a surprise endng. I found it difficult to put down and I would recommend it to lovers of true crime books.
i'm surprised.......2006-06-07
this chick could take her tongue out of Mark Geragross's ear to write a book.
Big thumbs down for Hermaphrodite
Great Read.......2006-06-02
Even though I watched the entire trial on court Tv this book went in to so many other factors of Peterson that we did not know. Do not confuse this book thinking it's Scott Peterson. This is another Peterson. Great read could not put down the book.Aphrodite Jones goes in to such detail as if she was there herself watching this horrible situation. She is a great investigative True Crime Author. This Book is a must read.
Book Description
From the author of the acclaimed The Future Homemakers of America comes a funny and moving novel about a high-spirited, unconventional woman whose life is a celebration of passion's triumph over prudence. What hope is there for Poppy Minkel? She has kinky hair and big ears-and an unquenchable lust for fun. Her mother Dora despairs of ever finding her a husband, despite the lure ofthe Minkel family mustard fortune. Social mores, duty, and ear-correcting bandages are the weapons of Dora's husband hunt, but they only serve to torture a girl who has her own ideas about beauty, love, and marriage. Then, her father dies on the Titanic. And as WWI opens up new horizons, Poppy's tendency toward the unconventional finds room to blossom. Without a moment of self-doubt, Poppy reinvents herself in step with the unfolding modern century.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable read, memorable characters. .......2007-03-22
This book made for an enjoyable read, despite a character that was unusual at best. The American publisher changed the title and cover photo to something our public would "get", as we don't understand irony! "The Great Husband Hunt" has almost nothing to do with the story and the photo is insipid cheesecake. Had I seen the cover first, I'd never have bought the book and was pleasantly surprised at the content. The Unfortunates (British title) is surprising, witty, and an interesting look at the life of the "fortunate" class of the 20th century.
very entertaining.......2006-04-05
I love the way Laurie Graham writes. I really enjoyed her book, The Future Homemakers of America, and thought this would be similar, but the style of writing is different. I recommend both books. They made me wish I had more time to read.
still hunting for a better book.......2006-01-03
I really give this book a 3 1/2. The high parts of this rating I reserve towards the beginning of the book, but as the work progressed I became disappointed with the character of Poppy and the plot.
I initially loved this book. Hearing about Poppy's ackward appearance, her mother's shallow obsession with "fixing" her daughter for the "great husband hunt", and Poppy's rebellious nature made me laugh. I thought this book was going to be all about her mother's pushing for this perfect life and Poppy pushing back with unconventional adventures. That this "great husband hunt" would not have produced any husbands or children, just adventures, affairs, and eccentricities. So I was a little disappointed when Poppy did marry (granted it wasn't to a traditional socialite and it did lead to divorce).
In the beginning, Poppy was very naive but she told it like it was even though her Aunt and mother found her comments and behavior rude. I found her honesty very refreshing.
After WWI, Poppy's character crossed the line from this naive, lovable girl to an arrogant, rude young woman. In fact she didn't even seem human anymore. She seemed to have no connection with anyone, her mom, aunt, sister, husbands, and even her children. I thought she was a terrible mother. I could not get over how nonchalance she was when it came to her children. You would have thought that Poppy's experiences with her own shallow mother would have taught her that a mother's attitude has consequences on the happiness of her children. I heard more praises of love between Poppy and her dog than between Poppy and her children.
And if I had to hear one more time, "I'm a mustard heiress," I think I would have screamed. You would think someone would have taught her not to say that b/c 1) it's rude and 2) someone will take advantage of you.
Basically, I couldn't root for Poppy during the second half of the book and that's when my opinion of the novel fell short of the promising beginning.
Romance?.......2005-03-09
I would like to know where people got the idea that this book is a romance. It is in the general fiction area of any book store I've been to.
The book is a good read and I would recommend it to anyone look for an easy read.
A terrible book.......2005-02-10
This was an awful book. I could not finish it because the main character was so annoying.

Two delightfully funny stories.......2005-09-01

A Baby... Maybe?
Cara Romano needs to make an escape... and fast.
Cara's mother was arranging surprise visits with all the eligible men she can find, in hopes of winning a bet with a friend, and Cara has had enough! On her spring break from the school she teaches at, she makes a break for Houston, TX, to visit her good friends, Kate and Tony Donetti. Now begins ten days of sheer bliss, away from her mother and her scheming, away from anyone who could possibly track her down. She is going to indulge herself on vacation, doing many of the things she had dreamed about. Her very first day in Texas, she bumps into, quite literally, the man of her dreams... Or should she say fantasies?
Rex Noble is a businessman. He just has a different kind of business... a sperm bank for cattle, started with the purchase of his prized bull. A favor to a friend has him getting a new ad campaign going, to keep ahead of competitors, and it has some shocking results. He is livid over the disaster, and this could wreak havoc on his business, but he never expected it would also be a turning point for his personal life as well. Until the day he bumps into a vision of perfect beauty; and no one will tell him who she is.
Upon seeing a certain billboard for Noble Sperm Bank, it suddenly hits Cara... she longs for a child more then anything, but can do without the husband to get one. What better solution then to go to the sperm bank for artificial insemination? The more she thinks about it, the more she loves the idea, especially when her imaginings about the donor take on the visage of a rather sexy Texan. She is more then a little surprised to find the doctor at the sperm bank is none other then her fantasy man, but is even more surprised to realize this is not the type of sperm bank she was looking for! Afraid to admit her mistake, she plays along, hoping to indulge in a little fling with her sexy doctor, and maybe get some sperm the old fashioned way! Rex is happy to oblige, at first, until he begins to suspect her reasons for seeking out his business in the first place.
What can a person say? This book was hilarious! The bet between Cara's mother, and her friend (whose daughter is featured in the second story of this Duets volume) is a good premise for the stories and adds an extra margin of humor. Plenty of borderline slapstick comedy occurs throughout the book as well, in the by-play between Rex and Cara.
Cara is the stereotypical elementary school teacher, until she decides to let loose and have a ball on her vacation. Her inner musings about who she was and who she wants to be are a nice look at why she is the way she is. When she decides what she really wants is a baby, she sets out to reach that goal right away, hoping to surprise everyone when she goes home. No one would ever expect reserved Cara to go and do something crazy like get artificially inseminated!
Rex is a perfect hero, tall dark and handsome, crazy enough about Cara to imitate a Romeo and Juliet type scene when he doesn't even know her name. When she shows up at his clinic and spins him a story about wanting to buy a farm, excuse me, ranch!, and some cattle, he is surprised but pleased. He was intrigued by her before he knew her and was even more so after hearing her "plan," and jumps on the chance to assist her.
When these two get together, their mutual fascination flares out of control, igniting a passion neither was expecting. What Cara had intended for a fling, turns into something more, that she hopes he wants as well. It also adds plenty of opportunity for the addition of even more humor to the story, making the reader laugh out loud at what could be rather inopportune moments, depending on where the book is being read. Though this reviewer is sorry to see the Harlequin Duets series end, they could not have picked a better book to use as the grand finale. Also, this is one reviewer who looks forward to seeing more from Ms. Tucker hopefully in the new Flipside line.

How to Hunt a Husband
Who would have ever thought pulling a con on one's mother, to get out of unwanted marriage pressures, could be so much fun?
Anyone who read the Harlequin Duet The Great Bridal Escape/How to Catch a Groom by Bonnie Tucker and Holly Jacobs will remember Mary Kathryn's sister Shannon O'Malley. Well, she finally has her own story.
Ever since her sister, Kate, ran off with the best man from her aborted wedding, the pressure has been on for Shannon to find herself a nice young man and get married. Her mother, Brigit, missed her opportunity to have the huge wedding for Kate, so now the pressure was all on Shannon, a high school art teacher, to make her mother's dreams a reality... Especially since Brigit had made a bet with her best friend that Shannon would be married before her friend's daughter. No matter that she has absolutely no desire to get married. She prefers her nice peaceful single life filled with chick flicks and unshaved legs.
Nathan "Nate" Calder has dilemmas of his own. His mother is longing for grandchildren and keeps asking him when he will give them to her. He is a straight-laced pharmacist who had never done anything crazy in his life until recently, when he went out and bought a brand spanking new Harley. Too bad he doesn't know how to ride it without stalling it out on every corner. He is content in his life, not in any hurry to settle down and marry, let alone sire any offspring to fill his mother's arms.
When Nate and Shannon bump into each other at a local bar, they start commiserating about their mothers' plans. After a few jokes and drinks shared, they decide to work together to solve their problems. Shannon will pretend to be a stripper - no... make that exotic dancer - named Roxy and pretend to be Nate's girlfriend for his mother. Nate agrees to dress up as a bad biker dude named Bull and pose as Shannon's boyfriend for her mother. They figure this is the perfect plan to get their mothers to leave them alone and let them live as they want.
But the more time the two of them spend together, they begin to realize the joke's on them... Neither one counted on actually falling in love. So now what? Do they keep up the act for their mothers' benefits and never see each other again after the charade is done? Or do they give in to their feelings... and their mothers' designs... to be together? What results is a story like no one but Ms. Jacobs can write!
This story is a laugh riot! It is full of witty banter, charming characters, and plans gone awry. Everything comes together to form the perfect tale with just the right amount of everything one desires in a romantic comedy. Nate and Shannon are a delightful pair, meant for each other, though it takes them a while to figure it out. Their mother's add a bit of comic relief as well, especially when Nate's mother decides she wants to reform gentlemen's clubs. Read the book to find out exactly how and why...
There are plenty of opportunities for full belly laughs as well, but then, the reader expects that and looks forward to it, when picking up a book by Ms. Jacobs. She has developed a fun plot in this book that tells the reader one very important thing... One can scheme and plan to the little heart's content, considering every option to get out of a meddling mother's way, but one can never account for love. It pops up whenever least expected, and in the unlikeliest of places. But the journey is always fun!!

Very highly recommended.......2003-11-30
In the last Harlequin Duets, authors Bonnie Tucker and Holly Jacob team up for amusing comedy. Readers who have treasured such entertaining reads will be pleased to learn that Duets are becoming a new product line called Flipside, offering individual, longer titles. Certainly Tucker and Jacobs capture the flair and spirit that made Duets such a huge success.
A BABY...MAYBE? By Bonnie Tucker: Meddlesome mothers arrange a bet as whose daughter will marry first. But Cara wants no part of this competition to the altar, especially when her mother picks the date and begins to arrange the ceremony without a groom in sight. So Cara flees town on her spring break, only to decide that what she really needs a baby. But the man who is as the sperm bank does not exactly offer the exact product this hopeful mother needs. Or does he? A rollicking rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists and hilarity! The seamless blend of this story into the subsequent one by Holly Jacobs adds the unity of theme that characterizes the best of Duets.
HOW TO HUNT A HUSBAND by Holly Jacobs: Readers who enjoyed the Harlequin Duet The Great Bridal Escape/How to Catch a Groom by Bonnie Tucker and Holly Jacobs will recall Mary Kathryn's sister Shannon O'Malley. Now featured in her own story, Shannon endures the pressure to find a husband since her sister ran off with the best man and left her groom at the altar. Now her mother intends to win the bet that will land her at the altar despite her reticence to marry. Nate also wants to avoid the altar, and suggests that he and Shannon team up to get rid of the wedding planners. She presents herself as a stripper and he presents himself as a biker to their respective families. But the plan backfires when each attempts to keep their emotions and desire in check. An hilarious read that will keep the reader in stitches, HOW TO HUNT A HUSBAND showcases Jacobs at her outrageous best.
A great duo........2003-09-17
I read Holly Jacobs and Bonnie Tuckers two books last year, and couldn't wait for these. I love the bet that sets the heroines in motion. Very fun stories. I fell in love with both heroes. I'd never read a pharmacist hero before and loved when he tried to pretend and be a biker.

Just What the Romanticist Ordered.......2003-03-18
Those of us that read romance novels essentially know what we'll be getting into before we read Page One. There's a predicability about romance, & that's for the most part why we read it. That's what we're looking for.
The difference comes in w/the characters, the way the tension builds, the sensuality between them, the predictability or, better, the lack of, and the hopefully well-done backdrops for each fantasy story. Because that's what a romance is meant to be: a fantasy whereby a reader can step away from her own reality for even a short time & feel drawn into this make-believe world.
Barbara Dawson Smith has fulfilled all the most important elements in ROMANCING THE ROGUE. The hero & heroine are beautiful. There is just enough tension between them without there being an overt amount of never-ending sparring. The timing is well-done, so that Michael & Vivien are brought together in increments, steps in time, building up to a rather believeable end. And the supporting characters are well-defined.
If I had any criticism at all, it would be minimal. Maybe the book could've supported a wee bit more sensuality. While I could tell the couple were very attracted to each other, the heat of such a connection could've been turned up just a notch. Also, I kept waiting to see Vivien reunite with Brand after she knew him to be her brother. That was a scene that could've held a considerable amount of emotion, & I really wanted to see it happen.
LOTS OF EXCITEMENT.......2001-07-12
A great book, worth reading, Michael and Vivian were exciting fiesty characters and The Rosebuds had me laughing, a delightful, must read book. I couldn't put it down once I started it. Than again I bought all her books and haven't found a bad one in the bunch.
Pretty Good.......2001-03-20
I liked the sexual tension between the characters. This book is pretty good and worth reading. It's my first one by Smith and I plan to read her other novels. My only complaint is slight -- a little too much hatred between the main characters (until the end which more than made up for it).
ANOTHER KEEPER!!.......2000-09-29
Absolutely loved this book--Michael was a to-die-for hero, and Vivien a wonderfully feisty heroine. The Rosebuds had me chuckling out loud--what a trio of spunky old ladies! I closed this book with a sigh, hating for it to end . . . Ms. Smith, do I dare hope we'll see more of this family?
Surely Barbara Dawson Smith Didn't write this?!.......2000-09-28
I have enjoyed Smith's books up to this one, which read as if it had been generated by a computer program, randomized with romance-novel clichés, sentence by sentence...
Ms. Smith, defy your editors/publishers and take a bit of time to write your next novel. And don't allow them to write anything under your name.
