Book Description
In volume four of The Frost Saga, J.E. Fender masterfully weaves together two narratives that offer new perspectives on the American Revolution and on the character of Geoffrey Frost.
At the conclusion of volume three, Frost set off in search of his younger brother Joseph, who had recently fought in the battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain. This volume tells the story of Joseph's adventures in New York and Vermont as he joins Benedict Arnold in one of the most important battles of the Revolution: despite their defeat at the hands of the superior British fleet, the Americans thwart the British plan to drive down Lake Champlain and the Hudson River to divide the fledgling United States.
In alternating chapters, Fender tells the story of Geoffrey Frost's first voyage: when Frost was ten years old, his father placed him aboard a slave ship in order to learn the sea. As young Geoffrey matures from seasick invalid to accomplished sailor, he grows ever more dismayed at the nature of the trade in which the ship is engaged. His formative experiences aboard The Bride of Derry, especially his conflicts with the martinet Captain Wick Nichols, reveal the origins of the "great navigator, ingenious military commander, and fierce armed combatant" (Booklist) known to fans of the series.
Customer Reviews:
Underappreciated Writer.......2005-11-24
Let me tell you something, Fender might be the closest thing to a literary sea writer since Patrick O'Brian died. He has an uncanny ear for period dialogue and a way of plopping you right down in the middle of a historical story in a way that makes you feel as if you were actually there and could touch it. Ignore some of the snooty reviews about his earlier books. The guy is a treasure!

Finally, after years as girlfriend and boyfriend, Christy and Todd are getting married. Before the day arrives, though, Christy learns a startling truth about herself that makes her doubt if she can love Todd forever. Christy and Todd: College Years book 3.
Customer Reviews:
Christy and Todd's dream comes true.......2007-07-17
With hearts and eyes focused on God's plan for them, Christy and Todd endured much: separation, decisions to give up plans and dreams and wait for God's plan.Heartbrek, tears, but always trying to seek and abide in God's will. Christy returned Todd's "Forever" bracelet, knew she wouldn't see him again;released Todd to follow what he felt was God's call on his life.
In her beautiful and tender words,Robin Jones Gunn brought the story of God's love and fulfillment to Todd and Christy's hopes and dreams.
A story of friendship, hope, love, trust and fiath. don't miss it!
The forever promise.......2007-04-18
Ever since I began to read Christy, from where it all began in Newport Beach, from under the trellis, I've become addicted to these series. These books are very special to me. Christy has become a part of me, and I hold the books in my heart. I love these books so much.
In this book, Christy and Todd try to plan their wedding, and they try (and succeed!) to get over their differences in order to become a couple. They go through ups and downs, highs and lows, in order to get to say their promises to each other for the rest of their lives.
Their wedding is beautiful, sweet, and romantic. It paints a stunning picture, and you can just imagine it, and want to be there. I cried quite a bit at the end from the beauty of the wedding, and Christy and Todd's romance, and because this was the last Christy book. I feel as if I lost a friend. And there are so many unanswered questions! Like, does Marti become a Christian? How does Todd react to the box of letters? How does their honeymoon go? What about them having kids? RJB, please write more Christy.
I loved the book and all, but I felt as if the very very last part could be better, and a little more romantic. Everything is all beautiful, but it ends with "It is my privilege to introduce to you for the very first time, Mr. and Mrs. Todd Spencer" It's sweet and all, but you want it to be a little more romantic.
I'll miss you dearly Christy, but I know you'll always be tucked into a little corner of my heart. Forever and ever.
So sweet!.......2007-03-28
This one is so sweet! I LOVE the Christy and Sierra series, they're my favorite! I could read until my eyes fall out. I cried over this one, and because it was the last Christy book. Robin Jones MUST write more! There needs to be more, we need to know about the box of letters, the honeymoon, whether they had kids, and whether or not Aunt Marti surrendered her life to Jesus! We need more! Keep on writing Robin Jones! And this one was so sweet, Christy and Todd are so perfect for each other. Their wedding sounded so beautiful. This one especially made me want to hold out for a hero like Todd.
I Promise.......2007-02-01
The book I Promise by Robin Jones Gunn was published by the Bethany House Publishers in 2001. There are 285 pages and it is a fiction book. In those 285 pages you'll read through happy moments, sad moments, love, disaster and matrimony.
In I Promise, Christy Miller and Todd Spencer are nearing the point of wanting to permanently dedicate themselves to each other. A wedding proposal leads them on their way to a long road of ups and downs of planning a wedding. Throughout, their differences clash making you wonder, will they make it down the aisle to promise themselves to each other forever? This story is told in 3rd person omniscient and is set in Escondido, California. Many changes will take place with some tragedy, but that's for you to find out.
While reading I Promise I came to find that I really liked this book. There were happy moments that made you feel warm inside, funny moments, and even some that make you want to cry. I loved how it would incorporate every girls' dream of the perfect guy (Todd), and also having the cutest things happen between them that make you want it someday too. The way this story is written with such incredible descriptions makes you want know what they feel. Even though this story doesn't relate to me now, I hope someday it will because this has exactly what I want for me one day.
I thought this was an excellent book and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good love story that puts your imagination to work.
Very happy........2006-09-02
I was very happy with the shipping time and condition of the book. It actually arrived before the date given to me, so I was very pleased. I would definitely buy again.

A Simple Book that Covers It All.......2007-08-23
I have been given the honor of performing the ceremony when my son and his fiancee marry. A close friend had used this book to help create a ceremony with friends of hers and sent it to me. It is the perfect book to use to help create a meaningful ceremony no matter your religious (or non-religious) persuasion. Thank you, Ann, for this wonderful little book.
A happy mom,

Succinct & Meaningful.......2005-09-10
Although my husband and I had been confident about our ability to express our most intimate thoughts as vows, we lacked a structure in which to fit them so that both we and our guests felt secure. With 10 days to go before our wedding, our life with 5 pre-teens/ teens was leaving us little time to prepare these most precious words. Discovering Promises to Keep on the web was a godsend. Unfortunately unavailable in Canada, the book was sent at lightning speed from the U.S. We felt immediately at ease: the book's accessible ideas, size, layout, and even font size gave us peace and the direction we needed. Our own ideas now made sense within a framework. The rituals we crafted were unique to us and our setting (a remote lake). Our vows and rituals reached out to our guests (our "community" from whom we asked support) who not only felt included and comfortable, but who felt blessed to have been part of our ceremony. A couple who do marriage counselling (and advise other counsellors) had never experienced such a meaningful exchange of vows or rituals involving guests. They and others felt compelled to tell us repeatedly how different and wonderful our ceremony was. Even our kids thought it was great! Note: We did not find an exaggerated emphasis in the book on same-sex unions. Although there are references to these alternative lifestyles, we were easily able to accept or look past them based on the quality of the idea rather than their orientation. Along with our vows, we will keep the book to refer back to in years to come.
We LOVED this book!.......2003-10-13
My fiance and I practically wore this book out in the weeks before the ceremony! We were determined to make the ceremony itself the center of the day and this book really helped us clarify our thoughts on what we wanted to promise each other. I looked at a lot of books, but this one was the only one that gave us the help we needed. Can't recommend it highly enough!
New Age Spiritualist Point of View.......2002-06-27
I was disappointed in this book, as I did not understand from the reviews that this book had such a New Age kind of slant. It talks of inviting "Spirit", not The Holy Spirit or God or Father or even The Spirit. It spends a lot of time on relationships that "other's might not approve of" - lesbian/gay relationships or previous spouses or children. This would be helpful to those who need it, but it's another part of the book (very slim) to skim if not. It does have a few pages of slightly interesting stuff for what you want your minister/officient to say; and it does ask a few pages of somewhat interesting questions to help write your vows. But none of it is very original or different, other than it's PC correct point of view, and the book itself wasn't but a few chapters long. If you like Kahlil Gibran, and want your wedding ceremony and vows to reflect this kind of view - you will probably like this book. If you want something that has a more Judeo/Christian base - you will want to look elsewhere. Out of all the wedding books to choose from - and the limited amount of money to spend - I felt this book to be very slim physically and substantively.
Wonderful--a must for anyone getting married!!!!.......2002-06-13
I must have purchased at least three books before I found Ann's and none of them came even close to helping us create a very personal wedding. I would recommend this to anyone who, like me, wants a unique and special wedding. After reading this book (which is eloquently written but also very easy to read) we realized how important it was to have a ceremony that reflected exactly how we feel. And now that we have done just that, we also realize that we created a solid foundation of words that represent our commitment--we will always have those words to look back on.
Also, working through her worksheet in the back was a kind of positive and reaffirming endeavor that made us reflect on why and how we got to the point of marriage.
Thanks Ann!!

THE WEDDING PROMISE Delivers!.......2006-06-01
Green Rapids, Kansas 1867
THE WEDDING PROMISE is a tender romance of a young lady with the burden of the world upon her shoulders. The love her life is a man burdened by some emotional and physical scars. Together, they make the best life possible and find happiness for the others who love them.
This is a tender tale that's quick and easy to read and will touch your heart!
The way west for Rachel led straight down the aisle!.......2004-10-21
Rachel Sinclair was an 18-year-old girl trying to care for her two younger brothers after their parents died along the trail west and the trio was left in Green Rapids. At first squatting in an abandoned shack, Rachel is desperately trying to provide food and shelter, but she knows it will be only a matter of time before they run out of money. Then Cord McPherson, the owner of the land she is living on, shows up one day and offers her a job as the cook and laundress for the ranch he runs. Rachel thinks he's an answer to her prayers.
Cord McPherson is attracted to the feisty girl who is so determined to provide for her little family. She's beautiful, she has a mind of her own, she's loving, and she can cook and clean well, to boot. So when the preacher's wife demands that Cord marry Rachel to protect her from the gossip circulating around town, it's definitely no hardship for Cord to walk down the aisle! Cord has no idea what love truly is, but perhaps in time he will find out what it means with Rachel :)
I really loved this book. Rachel was my kind of heroine - independent, smart, and strong. She wasn't clingy or the type who couldn't live without a man in her life. Cord was a pretty good hero, although he was a little too cocky and possessive of Rachel for my tastes. The two main characters interacted well with one another most of the time, and they didn't fall in love as soon as they met one another - also something I liked. The author gave them time to develop their relationship and love for one another.
The cast of secondary characters was excellent. There was another romance in the book - that of Jake (who was a skilled pianist before he joined the Union army and lost his legs in the war) and Lorena (who had been Jake's fiancee before the war, but now Jake avoided her). Jake could be a beast, but Lorena stood right up to him, so she wasn't spineless either. Also, fellow rancher Beau Jackson was briefly introduced in this book, and he has his own book (Maggie's Beau by the same author).
Altogether, a wonderfully tender romantic read that I would definitely recommend.
Sweet and Sensual Love Story!.......2003-04-14
I must admit that I wanted to step into the pages of this book and become Rachel Sinclair McPherson! This book is a page-turner from the very first scene because the characters are so likable. The story is set in Green Rapids, Kansas a few years after the War Between the States. Rachel and her two younger brothers were traveling west on a wagon train with their parents until their parents died along the trail. The wagonmaster refused to let them continue their trip and dropped them off in Green Rapids. Rachel soon finds her brothers and herself a home in one of Cord McPherson's shacks. It doesn't take long before Cord finds them living on his property. He is immediately attractd to Rachel. He soon asks Rachel to take over as the cook at his horse ranch while his regular cook/housekeeper is away. Running out of food and money, Rachel decides to take the job. Rachel works from dawn till dusk and soon becomes the center of Cord's world. Cord is over the moon when the preacher's wife comes calling to check out exactly what's going on between the two of them and it is hurriedly decided that he and Rachel should marry. I'll leave Cord and Rachel there except to say that they have great chemistry;-) A tender sub-plot is created with Cord's brother Jake who lost part of both legs during the war. Rachel helps bring him back with his long-time love, Lorena Claypool and also makes it possible for Jake to use his love of music to become a productive individual.
And a joyous ending for all! (Just the kind I like;-)
My favourite book of all time!.......2002-03-31
I think this was the best storyline I have ever read. I fell in love with all her characters and they were so believable. I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, so to enjoy this book is not out of line! Even though it is a romance book, it could also be listed as suspense. This is a real page-turner!!
WONDERFUL - WELL WORTH READING!.......2002-02-07
We meet Rachel Sinclair and her brothers Henry and Jay. She is a feisty, innocent but determined eighteen year old who means to take care of her brothers, no matter what.
Enter Cord McPherson, owner with his brother Jake, of a ranch just outside of Green Rapids, where Rachel and her brothers has taken over one of the McPherson's line cabins [actually a shack].
Their introduction to each other is tantalizing and Cord falls in lust with Rachel.[grin]
He decides to solve one of his many problems by hiring Rachel to do the cooking and laundry and he lasts all of three days before approaching her with his proposition. Never telling her about his brother Jake, a wounded war hero with a nasty temper.
Ah, but the story progresses with the meeting of Rachel with Conrad Carson, owner of the mercantile store, an eligible bachelor who becomes quite smitten with Rachel.
You really must read to find out how Rachel handles the hellish temper of Jake -- Cord's bungling proposal and the wonderful every day life she made for herself and her brothers on the McPherson ranch. And how she and Cord brought Jake's love back to him.
Definitly HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and a P.S. - We meet a Mr. Beau Jackson, whose story is in MAGGIE'S BEAU -- should be another excellent one.

Dylan Black was the quintessential bad boy: handsome, sexy, clad in black leather jacket and faded jeans--a born rebel with a loud motorcycle to match. He was everything 17-year-old Molly Anderson wanted. Unfortunately, he was also her beautiful older sister's boyfriend. When Molly's sister married another man, Dylan affectionately gave his "buddy" Molly the gold wedding ring he'd bought for her sister and teasingly told her to give him a call when she grew up. He promised that one day they would have an adventure. Then he disappeared from her life.
Fast-forward 10 years. After the worst week of her life, Molly decides to take a vacation. While packing, she happens across the gold wedding band that Dylan gave her long ago and decides to turn her vacation into an adventure. Gold band in hand, she tracks down Dylan and finds he's still drop-dead gorgeous and she's just as wildly attracted to him as ever.
As luck would have it, Dylan is at a crossroads in his successful life, and Molly's request for an "adventure" dovetails perfectly with his need to get away from the pressures of his business. Besides, pretty Molly makes his temperature rise and piques his jaded senses. But neither of them could foresee the far-reaching consequences of their reunion, for although on the surface they are mismatched, Dylan soon finds that Molly's heart is a treasure he craves more than her curvy body. And Molly discovers in Dylan a kindness and depth of feeling she's never known before. Thrown together at crucial points in their lives, the two are forced to deal with life-changing decisions while nurturing their growing love. Author Susan Mallery's deft, smooth writing style works well in this emotionally intense novel. --Lois Faye Dyer

Plus-size heroine.........2004-07-31
it's up to you whether you think so or not. The heroine is size 12, but is uncomfortable with her body at least at the beginning. This romance book makes you believe that dreams can come true. Molly thought that she would be spending a little time with Dylan as a friend while she figures out what she's going to do with her life, but they fall in love and that changes everything. Give this book a chance, it's better than you think.
A truly inspirational book.......1998-08-25
What the heroin goes through in this book makes us all think our lives are great. I was caught up in emotions through the whole book!
