The Three Brethren, an ancient brooch of precious stones, is at the center of this intricate, episodic, multifaceted novel. In fact, the brooch is more interesting than the narrator, Katharine Sterne, whose obsession with its rubies, diamonds, and pearls takes her across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. As Katharine says, "My life is part of the story of the Three Brethren, not the other way around.... The Brethren has been the turning point of many lives, and mine is only one."
Each of the stones that comprise the brooch has its own cast of characters. The most interesting of these are the Levy brothers, two Iraqi Jews who make their way to London to create a crown for the coronation of Queen Victoria and are ultimately swindled out of the most precious of the Brethren's jewels. The book's chronology is difficult to follow, as Katharine's discoveries take her, and the reader, back and forth in time and place, from Istanbul in the 15th century to a Japanese fishing village 500 years later, where Katharine's love affair with the Brethren's last owner seems tacked on, like an afterthought. Still, this complex novel, written by a poet whose love of language shows through on every page, will appeal to those who share a fascination with precious minerals. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Burrowing through the goldsmiths’ quarters and hidden archives of London, Tokyo, and Istanbul, Katharine Sterne is on the trail of a ruby, diamond, and pearl brooch once worn by Queen Elizabeth I. Interwoven with the tale of her hunt is that of a pair of Iraqi Jewish brothers who traveled to London two hundred years earlier with fortunes made from an unearthed jar of priceless stones. Spanning two continents and six centuries, The Love of Stones follows three very different people, each consumed by the same desire—possession of the legendary jewel—which binds their stories together in an irresistible quest.

Needs some lust.......2007-02-26
The minute you think of ancient stones, history and chase...you (watching too much TV as a youngen) expect ...well some lust, a lascivious love story interplaying all these chases.
Nope- nothing. Maybe that's why Katherine came across as a bitter middle-aged woman.
Not what I thought.......2006-12-15
I couldn't finish it! Too slow and the main character was dull, depressing and rude. The stryline was alittle confusing as chapters jumped back and forth between times and characters. I loved the premise of the story, but would have enjoyed it from a more historical view rather than from the present day -just my own personal preference.
A true treasure hunt.......2005-11-13
The Love of Stones is a real-live treasure hunt, the story of a 25-year-old woman searching for The Three Brethren, a long-lost brooch of jewels. It's a fascinating read, terse and intense, going from one century to another, following the stones through the ages and following Katharine Sterne, the main character, in her search.
Katharine is strange, tense, obsessed, uncaring. We never see her fully, but then, we don't really have to. It doesn't matter what she looks like. We never really learn why she is so obsessed to find and possess this jewel, but I think I understand. She is driven by the same thing that makes someone climb mountains, and another person paint.
There are unanswered questions - where does she get the money to finance her five-year search? How did she learn of the jewel in the first place? Who were the people following her? Then, what happened after the narration stopped? Did she go see her sister & niece? Did she find Hikari? Was she content?
The work feels incredibly... authentic, real. As if this really did happen, as if there really is a jewel called The Three Brethren that many people are searching for. Tobias Hill obviously did a great deal of research for this. He clearly lived in the places he wrote of - Turkey, Japan, England - or seriously immersed himself in literature and academic information from the area. And his knowledge and description of jewels and the jewel trade - in depth, believable.
I wish the author had included a timeline. It got VERY confusing as to what happened when, and where Katharine was, and who had the jewel at what time. It would have been a nice reference to review as I wound my way through the story.
The writing - amazing. Terse, descriptive. I could smell, see and feel the places described in the book. The author also did a great job of showing, not telling - for instance, we know that the brother, Salman Levy, is addicted to his opium, but never in the book does it actually say that. When Katharine was in danger, my heart rate increased.
This book is very different than typical literature. Highly recommended.
Hardly thrilling..........2004-10-13
I have to admit I did not finish this book. I slugged through the first three-quarters over about three weeks then skipped ahead to the last page, decided it wasn't worth the effort and put it away. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't call this book "riveting" or "thrilling" (maybe I just gave up too soon). Like other reviewers I didn't find Katharine particularly likeable though that didn't bother me much. She just wasn't all that interesting. The brothers, Daniel and Salman, were only a little more interesting. Actually the most interesting "characters" in the book were the stones themselves. Two stars for the stones.
The writing is superb.......2003-02-03
The other reviewers have talked about plot and character and I agree with the positive things they've said. But I want to talk about something else: the language. Tobias Hill is an extraordinarily talented writer. His economy of language, his inspired word choices, his awesome power of description, his ability to create living people in a few deft phrases are not only impressive, they are writing to savor.
Reading Hill's book is like eating truffles. You read slowly because you know there are only 396 pages and you don't want the book to end. I would offer sacrifices to the Gods of writing that Hill be prolific.
One more observation: every page on this book contains surprises--surprising dialog, suprising events, surprising characters...the kinds of surprises that real life presents you with, if you're lucky. I know this is fiction, but it has a quality of reality that is rarely found in fiction. If I could give it six stars, I would. I find myself buying copies and sending them to friends.

Stories you won't ever want to end.......2001-02-17
Katherine Stone's characters are so real that you'll hate for the stories to end. Luckily there are three great stories in this collection. She intermingles several love stories as well as suspense. From the first chapter you will become part of the book and at the end of each book you will feel like you just said goodbye to your lifelong friends.

How could a great man have such a complicated life?.......2007-08-08
I read this book many many years ago I believe as a Readers Digest Condensed Book. I remember what confused me then was the experience of reading about the great hero of mine, and most Americans , Lincoln having such a difficult, complicated marriage. I had thought as a child that somehow the 'hero' always had things work out well in their life.
As I understand it now this book is a sympathetic portrait of Mary Todd Lincoln who suffered greatly in part because her own great husband suffered greatly.
Book Description

A life changing book.......2007-05-03
I own a hardback copy of this book and have read it through twice now. If you're tired of living in the stronghold of anything...addiction, pride, greed, jealousy, guilt, insecurity, etc., then pick up a copy of this book. Breaking free from those strongholds doesn't happen overnight. But once you realize how chained you are to the things from which Jesus/God can set you free, you're on your way. I am so very grateful God put this book in my path for I wouldn't take anything for the gift of BREAKING FREE! The word says, "I've come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." I believe it and I'm experiencing that even in the midst of trials. That's what happens when you have a Savior and believe He is who He says He is and believe He can do what He says He can do. So, feeling in bondage? Get this book and let God change your life through it.

Book Description
With the last of her family's possessions gambled away by her dissolute brother, Lady Sarah Compton has traveled to a country house gala for one last moment of grace and beauty. But she is unaware that the occasion is actually a notorious trysting event, where members of the aristocracy can indulge their every sensual fantasy and erotic whim. Nor does she realize that the striking man who has stolen into her bedroom is none other than Michael Stevens-a rake who gives and takes his pleasures boldly.... The bastard son of an earl, Michael Stevens relishes his reputation as London's most notorious seducer. But he has no idea what to make of the auburn-haired beauty he'd nearly mistaken for a new conquest or how such an innocent could possibly have been invited to a gathering where London's bored elite caters to each other's carnal desires. When the lady refuses to heed Michael's warning-to leave the house for her own protection-a powerful attraction grows, and soon, he longs to tutor the very proper Lady Sarah Compton in the art of passion....AUTHORBIO: CHERYL HOLT is a lawyer, novelist, and mom who lives on the Oregon coast. Her second book, My Only Love, was nominated by Romantic Times magazine for a Reviewer's Choice Award. Total Surrender is her seventh novel.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of Time..........2007-08-23
Trash. Trashy trash at that. Don't waste your time. No plot, no subplot and no substance to the characters. Certainly no integrity in either one. Rubbish.
1.5 stars.......2007-08-20
This plot line had me very annoyed. It's almost a given in romance novel-especially Regencies/historicals, that the hero acts in an asinine way towards to heroine. Usually we expect that the said hero sees the error of his ways, and seeks out the heroine asking for forgiveness. Or maybe he doesnt seek her out, but when he does realise he acted like an a$$, he either begs forgiveness, makes some speech, does SOMETHING...ANYTHING to show REMORSE.
Cheryl Holt decided to not have that in her novel (how provincial, she may have though).
It really bothered me that for 6 months the heroine was scared wondering how she could eat/live because she was sent away and had no income, and the hero was so caught up in himself he didn't try to find out if she needed aid. And when they did meet up, it was all about sex- or sexual congress as Holt would have called it.
All in all, ineffectual hero and silly plot.
Half steamy sex, half ... wait there IS no other half.......2007-08-12
Yes, the sex was steamy. But there was no relationship between the two main characters. They spent more time talking to themselves in their heads than they did to each other. Sarah, apparently, is extremely good at reading body language, as this is how she learned all about Michael. Michael only needed to know that he lusted after Sarah. Michael's relationship with family friend Pamela was better developed. What a disappointment!
WHAT A GREAT STORY!!!.......2007-03-23
I decided to ignore the few negative reviews and found this book totally absorbing. It has passion (hot, hot, hot passion) and lots of it...(as I think it should well be with any couple in love/lust real or within the pages of a book). It never ceases to amaze me when I read prudish (sorry) reviews...lol...I mean let's face it, isn't that WHY most of us WANT to read a love story in the first place? This book is well thought out and well written, Holt has penned a moving romance between two very strong people who need to find a way to each other amid the many hurdles thrown their way, the process is filled with sweet innocence, heart wrenching scenes, biting wit and great dialogue. I couldn't put it down. The story is moving on many different levels for both of the main characters .. and you can certainly feel for both Micheal but also with poor Sarah being at the whim of first her horrible father and then even worse her brother ... let's not forget what a long way we've really come, because as we are (or should be) reminded when we read historical novels, women back then had very, VERY few choices... their very survival depended upon the whims of the men in their lives.
Great sex, little else.......2007-01-02
In sum, this tale serves as little more than a frame around a bunch of interesting sexual encounters between a spinster and a rake. Neither come across as particularly appealing or sympathetic characters. I was, in fact, sympathetic to the heroine until she was unjustly accused of scheming to manipulate the hero into matrimony...and then she started to burble happily about it to him at the wedding, when it should have been glaringly obvious to the woman, shown until this point as highly perceptive and intelligent, that her new husband was furious, had just been trapped and tricked, and he plainly thought she was in league with the villain who had put him in this situation. There was no logic to her euphoria, which just made her look as much a user as her villainous brother. Indeed, the heroine is actually very manipulative and pushy in this book, and I didn't much care as to her fate.

Total Surrender.......2007-05-26
An inspiring collection of the words and thoughts of a modern saint, beautifully presented in this edition.
You only getting more God if you go the way by yourself.......2005-10-09
What can you possibly say about such a book?
Maybe the interesting thing is that it is really a book with a specific message. What i mean with this is after reading some other books seeing Biography etc. I expected somehow the "same stuff" just presented slightly diffrently. Yet the concepts are not that much which you can present on the topic of love,Devotionj etc. this book shoots direct to the core of it. Sometime i felt that there is not one single sentence in this book which would be too much!
If you are intrested in surrender your life to God no matter from which path you came this book will be of such an assistance to you! This book is beyond religion and contains 110% Devotion and Love. Here some excerpts and comments in general:
Total surrender consits in giving ourselves completely to God
Why must we give ourselves fully to God?
Because God has given himself to us.
If God, who owes nothing to us
is ready to impart to us no less than himself,
shall we answer with just a fraction of ourselves?
To give ourselves fully to God is a means of receiving God himself.
I live for God and give up my own self
and in this way induce God to live for me.
Therefore, to possess God, we must allow him to possesss our souls.
How poor we would be if God hat not given us the power of giving ourselves to him.
How rich we are now!
How easy it is to conquer God!
We give ourselves to God;
then God is ours,
and there can nothing more ours than God.
The money with which God repays our surrender is
himself.
"Total surrender probes beyond the popular image of Mother Teresa to the very heart of her spiritual life and vision. In her won words, Mother Teresa tells of the simple joy of following Jesus and surrendering fully to him. Her life of radical poverty and wholehearted dedication to the poorest of the poor forms the heart of this inspiring surrender to God and those most in need.
It is part of the genius of Mother Teresa that she finds way
"The sisters must be consumed eith one desire: Jesus.
Speak of no one but him crucified
We must not be afraid to do the things he did
to go fearlessly through death and danger
with him and for him
The missionary must die daily, if she wants to bring souls to God
She must be ready to pay the price he paid for souls
wo walk in the way he walked
Put your heart into being a bright light
"Help me to shed thy fragrance everywhere I go"
Let the poor, seeing you, be drawn to Christ.
Poverty makes people very bitter
and they speak and act without realizing what they do.
But do they remember Christ when they see you
- even if they get angry-
because you remind them of Christ?
Draw them to God but never, never to yourself.
If you are not drawing them to God,
then are are seeking yourself
and people love you for yourself
and not because you remind them of Christ.
"...be able to give all to Jesus"
"I'm just the pencil and God does the writing"
I always wanted to serve the poor - purely for the love of God
We must be able to radiate the joy of Christ
They (the poor) have been unwanted all their life - We want them make feel that at the end somebody loves them and somebody cares for them
They have lifed life like animals but they die like angels
Our greatest love goes out to the oorest of the poor
Jesus said very clearly: "Whatever you do to the least of me that you are doing to me"
"She loved people no matter what" Sir Cliff Richard
Words of Wisdom from a very Wise Woman.......1998-10-07
While this book is basically just a collection of previously released works, Anything Mother Teresa has to say is worth an additonal read. It gives some insight into a remarkable human being.

Paperback measuring 4.25" X 7". The late Dr. Sumrall taught that until a Christian can differentiate between soul and spirit, he will more likely live in the soulish realm. The soul of the man must be a servant of the spirit. All independent actions related to thoughts, feelings and decisions must surrender to the "born again spirit of man." In this volume, the human soul and its function and relationship in the human personality is taught.
Book Description
As the third of Yahweh/Allah's personal religious regiments, Islam inherited a lack of knowledge, of falsehood, and all the phony legacies of Judaism and Christianity. This has led to the spiritual enslavement of Muslims.
In this controversial religious treatise, author Uche E. Chuku argues that Muslims have not only voluntarily surrendered to the enslaving will of Yahweh/Allah, but also find special pride in eternal spiritual enslavement. They believe that being a slave of Allah is the proudest rank the Muslim can claim.
Islam: Total Blind Surrender to the Will of the Antichrist: Religion without Reason, Book 4 informs and calls Muslims' attention to the gospel truth: Muhammad was a captive, not a voluntary slave of Allah. Chuku also contends that since Yahweh offers nothing but divine enslavement to his Muslim victims, his will contradicts humankind's collective quest for total physical and spiritual liberation and directly opposes the will of the true God, our heavenly Father.
Chuku shows how voluntary surrender to divine enslavement is the worst kind of spiritual serfdom-unprecedented in the history of human religion-and reminds Muslims that they can safely say no to divine enslavement today.
