Book Description
Like so many of her young compatriots, Lili Lin lives on the margins of society–she has been jailed for “having a corrupt lifestyle and hooliganism,” and at 24 she is unemployable because she doesn’t have connections and unmarriageable because she isn’t a virgin. Estranged from her parents, restless and cynical, she drifts from day to day. Then she meets an American journalist infatuated with China, who gradually opens her eyes to what is happening. Together they embark on a journey that will profoundly change Lili’s view of her country and of herself.

Interesting look at "hooliganism".......2006-02-28
This novel uses the main character as a metaphor for the People's Republic of China. Lili presents China as hungry for the modern world while still trapped in its pre-Communist past. The weakness of the novel is the love story, but the look into what constitutes a slacker in China is worth the read.
what happens when a sequence of telegrams are bound together and called 'a novel'.......2004-01-10
I heard this author was a teenage prodigy in China, who was exposed to media from early on and renowned. If the reputation was based on her writings, and if the whole point of this publication was to introduce the Chinese teenage sensation to the US context, she might as well write in Chinese and gets it translated rather than publishing whatever she barelo got to write. I really wansted my time on this barely readable work, which was mostly attributed to her telegram like sentences that had no style. Some authors write brilliantly regardless they are using English as their second language or as first one. So it might be unfair to say that. I think that it is not only her linguistic limitation caused the fatal damage on the text;she does not simply seem to have good enough insights or views to attract and guide readers through, or to be precise, she has nothing to say expecpt her huge ego to cry out that 'I represent China!', where she has nothing but complaint about. It was hell of an experience to go over this immature and embarrasing read cover to cover. Given this text came out, the standard demand to be met in the world literature China section was to feed readers with exotism and some superficial infos on how evil Chinese government was. The market was extremely little competitive given how big the pupulation is in China. So she follow the easy formula just to publish one book without nothing she really did seem to convey through it. But how boring and immature this book read to me. Wang's half way through political observation might go well with people who do not know much about what was going on in China, who were dominant population in US market. But someone who is familiar with the literary cliche prevalent as it is eaiser to employ the affirmative action in the marketing theory, it is really questionable to keep on acceptiong this type of publication.
Fabricated tale with no substance.......2003-07-25
This might have been an enjoyable read about life in China, except that the story was shallow due to under developed characters and cliche storyline. Many times I found myself sighing over the events that happen to the main character in the book. Lili was no much of a heroine. Perhaps she was not meant to be, but she certainly didn't seem to have a lasting impression on me. The supporting characters offered a bit of a laugh, only because I found them odd and sometimes out of place. Overall, it's just a book and this is just my opinion. From the reviews that I see, it seems that I am not the only one who shares this point of view.
Not too appealing to me.......2003-05-14
I think it's because of my tastes where I didn't seem to enjoy this book as much as I would have hoped. I know it's fiction, but some images that were portrayed seem unreal and unbelievable. Lili's character was too self centered, and didn't seem like a character I could relate to. The writing style was okay, considering it is the author's second language.
The story was just too stereotypical and lacked the creativity that I was looking for.
A Good Read.......2003-05-09
This book is truely a page-turner. The title character Lili is a woman who overcomes her self-loathing because she finds SOMETHING GREATER THAN HERSELF through true love and a massive political movement. If you are interested in the Far East, and historical novels, this is a book that I recommend.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, April 1998: "The first time my husband hit me I was nineteen years old," begins Fran Benedetto, the broken heroine of Anna Quindlen's Black and Blue. With one sweeping sentence, the door to an abused and tortured world is swung wide open and the psyche of a crushed and tattered self-image exposed. "Frannie, Frannie, Fran"--as Bobby Benedetto liked to call her before smashing her into kitchen appliances--was a young, energetic nursing student when she met her husband-to-be at a local Brooklyn bar. She was instantly captivated by his dark, brooding looks and magnetic personality, but her fascination soon solidified into a marital prison sentence of incessant abuse and the destruction of her own identity. After an especially horrific beating and rape, Fran realizes that the next attack could be the last. Fearing her son would be left alone with Bobby, she escapes one morning with her child. Fran's salvation comes in the form of Patty Bancroft and Co., a relocation agency for abused women that touts better service than the witness protection program. Armed only with a phone number, a few hundred dollars, and the help of several anonymous volunteers, Fran begins a new life. The agency relocates her to Florida, where she becomes Beth Crenshaw, a recently divorced home-care assistant from Delaware. Fran and her son adapt, meeting challenges with unexpected resilience and resolve until their past returns to haunt them. Quindlen renders the intricacies of spousal abuse with eerie accuracy, taking the reader deep within the realm of dysfunctional human ties. However, her vivid descriptions of abuse, emotional disintegration, and acute loneliness at times numb the reader with their realism.
Book Description
With this stunning novel about a woman and a marriage that begins in passion and becomes violent, the Pulitzer Prize--winning journalist and bestselling author of
One True Thing and
Object Lessons moves to a new dimension as a writer of superb fiction. "If literature were judged solely by its ability to elicit strong emotions," Kirkus Reviews said about
One True Thing, "columnist-cum-novelist Quindlen would win another Pulitzer." And the same will be said about
Black and Blue, a brilliant novel of suspense, substance, and importance.
In
Black and Blue, Fran Benedetto tells a spellbinding story: how at nineteen she fell in love with Bobby Benedetto, how their passionate marriage became a nightmare, why she stayed, and what happened on the night she finally decided to run away with her ten-year-old son and start a new life under a new name. Living in fear in Florida--yet with increasing confidence, freedom, and hope--Fran unravels the complex threads of family, identity, and desire that shape a woman's life, even as she begins to create a new one. As Fran starts to heal from the pain of the past, she almost believes she has escaped it--that Bobby Benedetto will not find her and again provoke the complex combustion between them of attraction and destruction, lust and love.
Black and Blue is a beautifully written, heart-stopping story in which Anna Quindlen writes with power, wisdom, and humor about the real lives of men and women, the varieties of people and love, the bonds between mother and child, the solace of family and friendship, the inexplicable feelings between people who are passionately connected in ways they don't understand. It is a remarkable work of fiction by the writer whom Alice Hoffman has called "a national treasure."

Running Scared... Running Out of Time.......2007-09-30
BLACK AND BLUE is a well written, perfectly paced story with characters a reader cannot help but fall in love with, and yes, hate. It is told from the point of view of Fran, a wife and a mother who struggles between the fine lines of love, loyalty, hatred, and fear. Abused and battered by her husband she struggles with how best to protect herself and most importantly to her, her child.
She finds herself on the run with her son, but always looking around her shoulder, knowing that for now, she may be one step ahead of her abusive husband, but constantly fearful that it cannot last, that he will find them if not today, then maybe tomorrow. And all the while as she finds herself constantly scanning the crowds around her, looking for that one familiar face that would have the power to doom her, she struggles with her son and his confusion over his new life without his beloved father.
A stunning tale that is sure to captivate you. A must read for everyone.
Thank you Anna for such a great read.
A better treatment would have been to present the batterer's interior experience as well.......2007-09-23
Spousal abuse is such a tough topic and this book is a sincere (I think) attempt to make the problem better known and better understood. The most realistic character in the book is the son, who loves both parents so much and lives in the shadow of their awful relationship. The victim's sister is also well drawn. But the victim herself, as narrator as well as protagonist, is still not fully sketched. And everything that happens to her in her new life is a bit too ideal. Then the batterer cop husband is really just a stereotype -- the nasty, hard drinkin', hard lovin' guy who treats his family as possessions. Someone else mentioned that it read like a Lifetime made-for-tv drama, and I would have to agree. That said, the topic is important enough that the book has likely done some good in reaching a broad audience and raising awareness of the issue. It just fails to explain it very well or to offer much insight on how to rectify the matter.
An okay book, but not brilliant.......2007-09-04
This book reflects the sad reality of one of the many plagues affecting this world: domestic abuse. Whilst fully sympathising with Frannie, the main character, and abhorring the psychological and physical tortures she went through by the hands of her husband Bobby -including the pain reflected by their son Robert, physically untouched but emotionally damaged- I found the construction of the narrative a bit boring. There's no nicer way to say it, I just didn't think this book was a page-turner.
The issue of domestic violence, however, is dealt with realistically and I believe that some parts of this book could be of help for the many ladies out there who suffer every day.
Not a satisfying read for such a sensitive subject .......2007-08-28
I thought that this book was well written on a compelling subject. I did think that Anna Quindlen dwelled on Frannie being an abused woman a bit too much. It seemed to me that I was reminded of this fact at just about every 20 pages or so. I wouldn't say it was truly satisfying reading experience. It wasn't a terrible book, but not a super read. Now, I think that her other novel "One True Thing" was a top-notched book and heads above this one. Sorry. I'm still a fan of Ms. Quindlen and I will continue to read all her books.
Not bad..........2007-08-11
It wasn't my favorite book of the year, but it was interesting enough to keep me up till 2:30 in the morning. A plus for me was definitely the characters. They were fleshed out enough to seem so real at times, I was afraid of Bobby Benedetto myself half the time. I liked how she took her time with the story, developing the character, and making Bobby seem more than the typical abuser and Fran more than the typical victim.
That being said, my two biggest issues were that there were some scenes that didn't need to be here. I'd finish one or two and ask myself what it had to do with the story. The other problem was that I could smell the ending a mile away. I won't give it away, but those who read it might know what I'm talking about.
Otherwise, it was a good novel. Not the best written in the world, but it was enough to keep me engaged. I'll look for other works by this author in the future.

In this collection of interlinked poems, Joy E. Stocke journeys to the Cave of the Bear on the Island of Crete. There, myth and history collide as Stocke reexamines her role as traveler, wife and mother in the shadow of what was once a shrine to Artemis/Diana.
Customer Reviews:
An eloquent read..........2000-09-05
Whether or not you are familiar with the Grecian mileu, I warmly recommend this collection of Joy Stocke's poetry that were inspired during a visit to the island of Crete. Joy's words and expressions are as classically elegant as Grecian columns. Moreover, any one -- if not all -- of her works will touch a chord in your heart. Reading this book will delight your soul as well as stimulate your mind.

This book is a must have for every man who wants to have success with beautiful women. Another new bestseller which I highly recommend - The Exclusive Layguide: When Dating and Having Sex with Incredibly Hot Women is No Longer Mirage Even If You Don't Look Like a Model or Don't Make a Fortune

Doesn't Have Too Much To Offer (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-08-14
So I read this book on how to help pick up women, because the title looks so promising. I read it and basically it doesn't have too much to offer. It doesn't give straight foward help, it kinda beats around the bush. I have learned some new things in this book, such as how to start conversations with women and ask openended questions with them (expect the phrase "Whats your story" about 1000 times). But basically, the information in this book is vague. It does not give instant results like we guys all planned to, but it gives you a starting point and hangs you out to dry on your road to being a PUA instead of a chump.
Being a 20 year old college student and living in a city full of females who are stuck up, I figured this book would help out. Unfortunately, it did not do me too much justice. If you guys found success in this book with the opposite sex, give yourself a pat on the back. Funny that female reviewers (like the one below me), might get a joke out of this book because they go around making others feel like crap. I for one really don't recommend this book because of it's vague subject matter. If you want to read a good book, I recommend How to Succeed with Women, because that book gives more info into detail. Peace.
THE JIG IS UP!!!.......2007-08-11
It has to be said, guys; WOMEN CAN READ! And we're reading these male dating guides faster than you are and we know all the tricks. Play them and you'll be labeled a loser before you get to flash that charming smile.
I have a college-age daughter and she and her friends have a collection of these books (The Game, Mystery Method, PBDG, etc.) that they pass back and forth and laugh about, belittling guys they've caught in the act of trying to employ what they've read. It's kinda sad.
And worse, every women's talk show has turned these books inside out. Any woman with a television will spot the act and you may lose out on a promising encounter.
Go back to being yourself. You're a lot more attractive than you think!
Basic but available elsewhere.......2007-07-27
While 'The Layguide' does cover the aspects of a succesful pickup, it is a fairly rudimentary guide. All the information in this book is also available in any of the sedution community sites. Fast Seduction has practically this entire book.
If you're truly interested, read 'the game' and then check out the seduction forums. It will benefit your wallet more...

Book Description
Mrs. Anne Smythe's Healing Spa and Bathing Emporium is a haven for fashionable women who believe the waters have aphrodisiac properties. Yet the prim proprietress never thinks of testing that theory-until grievously injured Captain Stephen Chamberlin is deposited on her doorstep. Every minute the war hero spends under her roof courts scandal. It isn't long before she discovers that having such a man at her mercy arouses her in ways she never thought possible as their "therapeutic" sessions in the hot springs have become steamy trysts Anne wishes would never end....Stephen thought he had reached his lowest point when the war rendered him an invalid. He's proven wrong when his sister and best friend leave him in the care of the tantalizing Mrs. Anne Smythe. Yet as the healing waters work their magic, so does the widow Smythe. Beneath her unflappable exterior lies an alluring woman: warm, witty, and refreshingly open to sensual experimentation. But when mutual pleasure turns to forbidden love, can two people outwit the forces that would see them torn apart?
Customer Reviews:
A little different from her other novels, but I really enjoyed it........2006-10-10
I truly enjoyed this book! Ms Holt's hero's are not always the most likeable guys; generally selfish and arrogant. Stephen Chamberlain while he was arrogant, I found him completely likeable. As a war hero who returned home a little worse for ware we see his vulnerabilities and his insecurities. Anne Paxton Smythe is a wonderful herione, who knows her own mind and is an established independant lady. The secondary story of Stephan's sister is also a nice treat. Many might be turned off by the level of violence in the novel, but as a whole I thought the book was quite refreshing.
okay .......2006-08-15
This is one of my favorite authors. But this book would not be my first choice of her books. It gets a little slow in the middle. Which is unlike Cheryl Holt. I love her as an author. I would suggest one of her other books like... Total Surrender! That is one of my favorite erotic historical romance novels.
Another failed effort by Holt........2004-12-11
I've read all of Ms. Holt's books. I've loved them all, except her last two efforts, this book and the one before it. Both books are almost identical in key plot elements: one major plot and three subplots (and therefore far too many characters), lots of class warfare, and largely unsympathetic characters. PLEASE do not have a hero and heroine from different classes, if all they're going to do is whine incessantly about how their different stations must keep them apart. I found Stephen's vanity and arrogance about his class superiority appalling. There was nothing at all heroic about him. And, I'm sorry, but he didn't all of a sudden become heroic simply because of the way he came to Anne's rescue at the very end. Not only was Stephen vain, but he had no integrity. He went on and on about how he was too proud to work for a living, too proud to let Anne support him through her spa, but was not too proud to marry Felicity for her fortune! The distinction of course is that Anne would have control of her money but, by law, he would control Felicity's fortune. He was, simply put, disgusting. Anne deserved so much better. With the exception of Kate, I found all of the characters in this book dispicable, self-pitying and annoying. I am sorry that I paid for this book. I think from now on I'm going to check Holt's books out at the library. She's no longer worth the money.
Class Warfare.......2004-11-05
Commoner Anne Smythe runs a health spa for women. Stephen Bristol, a wounded aristocratic soldier, needs her services. It would be scandalous for a man to even cross the threshold of a haven for women but Stephen's fed-up sister, Eleanor, along with his commoner friend, Charles, dump him on Anne's doorstep and run for London. Stephen has been irascible and unhappy since being wounded in Spain. Anne, seeing that she has no choice, takes him in and attempts to help him. The pampered Stephen finds that he is attracted to her no-nonsense attitude. Meanwhile, Charles discovers that he's in love with Eleanor. Will these two aristocrats stoop and find happiness below their exalted status?
Toss into the mix Anne's lesbian helper Kate, the crazy man next door Willie, who runs a semi official jail and is in love with Anne, his abused sister Prudence, and Camilla, a former mistress of Stephen's - a slutty aristocrat, and you've got trouble. Stephen also has a fiancée in London who loves someone else but feels duty bound to stick with him.
MORE THAN SEDUCTION started a bit slow but heated up after all the characters were introduced. There was plenty of sex and intrigue as the characters attempted to overcome the barriers posed by class and status in England at an earlier period. It would have been helpful if we had been told exactly what time period was involved. For readers of romance it is a good choice.

Sizzles!.......2004-10-21
Setting - Rural England - 1813 --- Mrs. Anne Smythe has has turned her farmhouse inheritance into a going concern as a healing spa for women. Near Bath, the hot springs on her property seems to have some healing properties, and her innate knowledge of healing has attracted a modest but privileged clientele. Hearing of the healing properties, Lady Eleanor has come to beg Anne to accept her brother, war hero, Captain Stephen Chamberlin, as new patient. When Anne adamantly refuses and Eleanor thinking that this was the last hope she had for her brother, she had her footmen drag her brother out of her coach and propped him up on Anne's doorstep - then she took off!
Anne despised the nobility and was furious at the audacity of Lady Eleanor, but the pathetic heap of humanity that was the unconscious, and filthy war hero couldn't be ignored. Anne would keep him and arrange for his return to his family estate as soon as possible. Cleaning him up and after putting Stephen's childish arrogance in his place, she agreed to help heal him and before long the healing waters began to work their magic both in healing Stephen and unleashing Anne's latent sexuality as they embarked on a most erotic love affair. In spite of his lofty heritage, he was only a third son, penniless, and now living on the largesse of his father unless he married an heiress. Anne, doesn't fool herself into thinking that anything good could come of the affair, only her heart had fallen irrevocably in love even though her good sense wished otherwise.
What I've come to expect from this author are deeply sensual and erotic sexual nuances and in this, I wasn't disappointed. Not only did she give the main protagonists a powerfully sensual tale but, a secondary sizzler featuring Lady Eleanor and Stephen's friend Charles, which by the way, ran neck and neck to the main story. There was sufficient depth to the story, and I could feel for Stephen over his injuries, but would have liked to strangle him when he couldn't commit or even try to come up with some possibilities for the woman he professed to love! With Eleanor and Charles, even though she was a bit dim witted at one point, she seemed to deal with her relationship much better, even though her previously bitter marital experience gave her just cause to be wary. One has to applaud Ms. Holt as well, for her adeptness in handling the lesbian issue in a thoughtful and tasteful manner. Unfortunately, what I truly did have a bit of trouble with, was the manner in which Stephen dealt with the very brutal Willy McGee - not that the sick pervert didn't deserve what was done to him but whew - it did bother even my sensibilities! Bottom Line - While fans of Holt will find this an interesting and highly sensual tale, it will touch on issues that might be uncomfortable for some. Just don't discount this altogether because for those who love their romances filled with the spice and the erotic, this is one is for you!!! (...)
Product Description
Anne Smythe runs a healing spa for rich women of the ton while pretending to be a widow rather than the bastard daughter of an earl. She is not happy when Lady Eleanor Chamberlin leaves her injured brother, Stephen, with her, but Anne hides him, puts up with his bad temper, and ultimately falls in love with him. They have a sexually fulfilling affair despite their knowledge that they have no future together because of class differences, but one of the funnier subplots is Stephen's attempt to divest himself of a prior fiancee once he decides that he must find a way to marry Anne after all. Unfortunately, one of his prior paramours hires Anne's next-door neighbor to punish the lovers, and he, private constable and sadistic pervert that he is, is delighted to oblige. The entertaining side affairs include a lesbian relationship, and all in all, this is a good sexy read for Regency fans as well as erotic romance fans who like a little plot with the sex. Mary K.
