Book Description
In one of the best-loved volumes of her work, J. California Cooper tells exuberant tales full of wonder at the mystery of life and the hardness of fate. Awed, bedeviled, bemused, all of Cooper's characters are borne up by the sheer power of life itself.

D.J. Parhams, Author of The Blues for Annie Mae.......2007-06-30
There is reading material and there is cherishing material, this book is definitely placed in the latter category. Ms. Cooper is a master storyteller. She is fearless in her writing, unafraid to follow her OWN heart and her OWN rules. Ms. Cooper uses more twist and turn than a California highway. She tells stories with her own country grammar and country charm.
Simple Enjoyed.......2006-09-22
I simply enjoyed the stories. They were funny at times, dealing with real life situations.
What an excellent read!.......2003-02-27
If you think this book is excellent, poignant, funny, truthful, etc. listen to the 'books on tape' version. The various narrators bring this excellent work to life. I borrowed it from the library (several times) and love it every time. Classic lines like when the guy tells his wife he's leaving to find the life he's missed he says 'that's it in a nutshell. She looked at me like I was the nut in the shell." Don't miss this book.
Homemade love is what you make of it........2003-02-01
J California Cooper was magnificient in this book. She talks about love, lost, lonliness, and happiness. She also tells how even though life is consistantly taking you through hard times. Theres always a rainbow at the end of your journey.
My Favorite Book in the World!.......2002-09-04
This is my favorite book in the world. J California Cooper is my favorite author in the world. The characters in her books have a triumph of the spirit. Her words invite you into the lives of the people in her stories. She captures your heart with real life lessons and common sense. Most of all, I love her honesty. Life is best served warm, with tears, smiles, and truth and she serves it up just right.
The best gift given is that which is a part of you. So, in that spirit, I've given this book away to so many people that I have lost count. Last October I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Cooper at a book signing here in New Orleans and she was gracious enough to sign my copies of her books; (I own and have read them all). What a Blessing her words are! Read Homemade Love, and all of her books, and you too will become a fan for life.

Teacher's Pick.......2007-05-13
My mother is an early childhool development techer and consultant. She asked me to order this book for her to use in the classroom and at siminars. Although I can not comment myself (I have not read the book); I can say that this is a personal pick from a an award winning educator of 30 years.
My daughter absolutely loves this book!!!.......2006-07-06
My husband and I frequently take our two year old toddler shopping for new books... Homemade Love is a jewel! It is a story about unconditional parental love and reaches across all races and ages. My daughter wants to read it every night before going to bed... It is a very peaceful smooth-flowing picture book. The fact that it is about a loving African American family makes it even more endearing and holds a special place in our hearts. The illustrations are scrumptious! Thanks to bell hooks, I have been inspired to refer to my little one as my- honey bun chocolate dew drop- on more than one occasion!

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully touching........1999-11-04
This book is an excellent portrait of a mother--the author's mother, my mother, and probably your mother. It speaks of bygone days, when families were close and love was lavishly bestowed to all. One cannot read this book without returning to those remembered days of years gone by, to taste the homemade recipes prepared by loving hands, to chuckle at the mistakes made in youth, or to be moved to tears by the loving acts and sad losses we all have shared with this author. Mrs. Sims has painted such a clear picture of Mama, her strength, moral character, and loving attitude, that we feel we have known her a lifetime. In my opinion, this book is an absolute treasure that should be shared with everyone.
A moving tribute to a beautiful woman........1999-05-12
This book reminds us all of the importance and power of a life well-lived. Helen (mama to the author, mamaw to me), the subject of this book, was both an amazing person and a symbol of those we have loved who have gone before us, or who are still with us for a while longer. It will engender in the reader a greater appreciation for both. In a time of moral turbulence she is a beacon of the magnificent possibilities of an honest and simple life. This book is a well written tribute told in brief vignettes sure to elicit many smiles and not a few tears.

break your kidsý bad eating habits.......2000-05-09
Subtitled "How the Make the Brand-Name and Homemade Foods Your Kids Love More Healthful--and Delicious," this book is a godsend to parents who want to break their kids' bad eating habits before their little tater tot has turned into a full-fledged couch potato.
The trick of this book (and it's not a bad idea for adult junk-food junkies to browse through its practical tips) is that it acknowledges that the foods kids love are loaded with fat. Instead of suggesting you force feed your little ones on an exclusive diet of carrots and celery, this book gives step-by-step instructions on how to cut the fat from popular name-brand and homemade foods (special sauce is all fat, wipe it off any fast food burger.) It also lists helpful comparisons of popular snack foods, making it easier to make nutritionally sound purchases.

Product Description
Unabridged audiobook. Narrated by Various Narrators. 5 Cassettes. 6.75 hours. Critics have compared J. California Cooper's work to that of Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston - but she has a witty style of her own. Each of her short stories is a gem of downhome wisdom, polished with a bit of gossip, some heartbreak, and lots of humor.

Book Description
Dear Mother and Father,
After all those years, I was certain Jakob Hirsch had forgotten me. Then came his proposal of marriage. With more impulse than wisdom, I crossed the ocean to begin a new life with him in Shadow Creek, Idaho. Little did I dream of the changes eleven years had brought to the man I once loved—which included three small children waiting with him at the station.
I will not marry a stranger who no longer loves me, but I have agreed to look after Jakob’s children until the harvest is in. A cabin on his property provides me with respectable living quarters. If only it were as easy to separate my heart from this family! It will be difficult to leave when the time comes, for I am falling in love with these little ones—and, truth be told, with Jakob.
Your loving daughter,
Karola Breit
In Idaho, the land is good but life is hard for a German émigré whose dreams have turned to dust. Love found and lost can shatter a man’s faith. But it is about to strengthen that of the woman to whom he turns—and in the drought of summer, a withered promise springs to life.
Promised to Me is book four in the Coming to America series about women who come to America to start new lives. Set in the late 1800s and early 1900s, these novels by best-selling author Robin Lee Hatcher craft intense chemistry and conflict between the characters, lit by a glowing faith and humanity that will win your heart. Look for other books in the series at your favorite Christian bookstore.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Plot Twists, Okay Characters.......2007-04-02
RLH certainly knows how to throw her poor characters for some crazy loops. That's how life is, so I love the realism. The "letter" chapters were all right; I liked the uniqueness of them. The characters seemed to learn alot, but overall, they struck me as too typical of the romantic, chick-flick lit sort of people.
Promised to Me.......2006-03-16
Another winner by Robin Lee Hatcher. We need more exciting Christian novels. Many people might think because it is a Christian novel that it is devoid of action and suspense but this is not so at all.
Promises to Keep You Up All Night.......2005-12-19
I read a lot of books. Rarely does a book keep me up all night, but this one did. Karola Breit grows in the Lord and in maturity, as she cares for the children of a man who broke his promise to bring her to America and marry her 10 years earlier. While she refuses to marry him her first day in Shadow Creek, Idaho, she cannot refuse to care for his three motherless children, while he gathers his harvest. I can't wait to read the rest of the series--I love prairie romance and immigration in the late 1800s stories, and this fits that bill beautifully.
Learned something new.......2004-03-09
I love the message Karola Breit recognizes within herself, that she is making strong, healthy choices that will guide her life. Karola grows from an immature girl to the woman who knows her own heart. And when she makes mistakes along the way, she is able to look around and realize that everyone makes those same mistakes. It is this humanity and genunine human spirit I love in Robin Lee Hatcher's books. Her characters do not so much change overnight as they realize their mistakes and are able to grow, and hey - it's a book! "Promised to Me" is my favorite of the Coming to America series...so far.
Promised to Me.......2003-07-28
This book was okay, but isn't one of my favorites. Jakob seemed so harsh. He always seemed to be upset. And I felt sorry for Lance. He was in love with such a loser. Charlotte is a character hard to understand. In one chapter she's all mean and spoiled. And in the next, she's feeeling bad for eavesdropping. The children were not realistic. They seemed too perfect. And it was hard to read because she kept throwing in all these German words. Some characters seemed to be crying every other page. Overall, this book wasn't bad. But I've definitly read better books. No offense.

absorbing read.......2004-07-14
I'm surprised by the other comments that characterize this book as either sentimental or about someone depressed. I found it to be much more mature than that. There are so many poorly written books on the best seller list, I was glad to find something a bit different. Of course, there are some flaws, perhaps in her reading her lover's letters a bit too much rather than recalling some more vivid scenes in a flashback. And her husband is a stereotype, her children cardboard. But I liked it that she was trying to find out more about her own family's past. The fact that her father had two families was so interesting - I wish it had been explored more. But the novel sets itself in a few days' timespan where she is in a hotel. The political turbulence is also a bit remote as a backdrop for a U.S. reader who would like to know more, esp. about her husband's activities and politics. Also, the ending was very disappointing. Still, it was an absorbing read for me and something I would recommend to others. It could be a good reading group book. I wish the author would go back to this subject and maybe extend the time period beyond just staying in the hotel and the few memories she has while there. The book is about 150 pages and could have been 250 easily. I would definitely read more by this author sometime. She has a very fresh voice, very real and mature and it was nice reading something that was real, as opposed to magic realism, which I have a harder time connecting with.

The love you promised?.......2000-09-18
Throughout life, one often confronts both happiness and disappointment. In Silvia Molina's novel, The Love You Promised Me, the story revealed during the two-day trip taken by the main character, concentrates on the disappointing moments of life. The main character, Marcela, takes this trip to uncover her past by learning of her family genealogy. She also uses this time to reflect on an affair that has turned sour, during which the reader learns of her sadness and disappointment in life. Marcela, the wife of an incredibly successful, hard-working lawyer, Phillip, finds herself caught in an unsatisfying marriage. As often the case with the spouses of those holding a demanding position, Marcela feels neglected and often complains about the absence of her husband. Despite this fact, he remains a good husband and father to their children. As Marcela unfolds her life, the reader learns of an intimate affair with Eduardo, a well-known doctor. The two meet as Marcela's mother undergoes treatment for her terminal illness. Marcela notes Eduardo's compassion and concern for his patient and begins to care a great deal about him. Shortly after this, he reveals his love for her and the two begin intimate communications, first through a series of letters and later in person. However, the promising affair is short lived as Eduardo confesses he no longer feels for her, causing incredible heartache for Marcela. Amidst the telling of the lovers' tale, Marcela does research into her ancestors' lives. She finds that her past uncovers some unsettling family issues. Marcela is disgusted with her grandparents' choice to abandon their son after his marriage with a person of another class. Anger at the hands of Marcela's family, both in and out of the immediate, roams throughout the novel. The author deliberately puts a large focus on different angles of her family life that has upset her. The relationships with her family, and her opinion of the members of it, display Marcela's inability to accept her past and present position in life. In fact, this causes her to take the trip in the first place, to resolve questions of her unknown relatives. The first and most immediate cause of unhappiness brought by family members, comes from her husband Rafael. Although an excellent provider and good father, Marcela is disappointed with the way that the marriage has turned out. She often feels alone, and wishes to have the companionship that marriage brings. Emotionally, her relationship with Rafael feels not existent because of his need to ensure the financial stability of the family and maintain the respect he has earned as a prominent lawyer of the area. Even though Marcela realizes the need for her husband to work so hard, she complains to herself and gives her an excuse to begin an affair with Eduardo. Another portion of family life that Marcela struggles to deal with comes directly from her father. After his death, she learns of another family he kept hidden from her. Marcela is angered, not only by her father's unfaithfulness, but also by her mother's decision to stay with him. The struggle is evident as she asks her dying mother whether she knew of her father's affair. Aside from the actions of her father, treatment he received from his family disturbs Marcela as well. On her trip she learns of her father's rejection by his own family after marrying a housemaid, a member of a lower class. Marcela views this family with disgust, eventually adding another factor to her depression. As the novel moves towards a conclusion, Marcela begins to realize the true causes of her unhappiness. Although she experiences a great deal of pain from the termination of her affair with Eduardo, Marcela learns that she must learn to accept her place in life and her family. This does not mean that she agrees with all the actions of her family, but she is willing to not let it affect her anymore. Therefore she can begin to put her life back in order and recover from the past that so strongly influences her while dealing with her marriage in a more positive manner
