Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races."Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man
"Terra nullius"no man's landwas the legal fiction employed to justify the white invasion of Australia. Aboriginal lands were declared "terra nullius" because, it was claimed, they were inhabited by people who would soon die outand who could be helped on the way to extinction if they lingered.
Author of the acclaimed "Exterminate All the Brutes" and A History of Bombing, Sven Lindqvist is one of the most innovative writers and historians at work today. He brings his original sensibility to bear as he travels 12,000 kilometers through so-called no man's land in search of places where belief in the rights of the white man and the inevitable extinction of the "lower races" were put into practice. The world the Aborigines had known for centuries ended as young boys were kidnapped to dive for pearls, then whipped and abandoned when the bends ruined them for work; "half-caste" children were taken from their mothers; and natives were put in neck irons and sent to internment camps under false diagnoses of STDs.
Mining history, popular fiction, anthropology, and his own travels, Lindqvist brilliantly weaves together an illuminating and disturbing history of how "no man's land" became the province of the white man.

Book Description
Nurdin Lalani and his family, Asian immigrants from Africa, have come to the Toronto suburb of Don Mills only to find that the old world and its values pursue them. A genial orderly at a downtown hospital, he has been accused of sexually assaulting a girl. Although he is innocent, traditional propriety prompts him to question the purity of his own thoughts. Ultimately, his friendship with the enlightened Sushila offers him an alluring freedom from a past that haunts him, a marriage that has become routine, and from the trials of coping with teenage children. Introducing us to a cast of vividly drawn characters within this immigrant community, Vassanji is a keen observer of lives caught between one world and another.
Customer Reviews:
A Migration Tale.......2006-04-17
This book is set in Toronto at some point in the late 1970s/early 1980s and follows an Indian family from West Africa and their immigrant story. It is filled with little, poignant moments and many quiet, yet memorable characters that together, paint a very moving portrait of people in transition. Best of all, Vassanji is able to capture all this in an easy going, understated style. Highly recommend to all, but especially for those with interest in immigrant/minority experiences.

Book Description
Of course, fighting a war is always difficult--but when you're conducting an amphibious campaign over 8,000 miles from home, the task becomes Herculean. Such were the circumstances in the Falklands in 1982 where, in the unforgiving climate of the South Atlantic, the outnumbered British struggled to defeat Argentina's troops. Written by the commander of England's land forces there, this first major account of the war reveals the frustrations, hardships, and ultimately the success of a campaign regarded by many as a mission impossible.
Customer Reviews:
"Boast and Brag"? No..........2002-12-13
This book is an excellent and readable memoir that anybody with an interest in the Falklands War, or in the Royal Marines, would be well advised to read. It is an easy read, but this doesn't detract from the fact that it is a serious piece of work that will hopefully have enduring value.
A previous reviewer describes the book as "boast and brag" and "accusations and self defence". Any member of the British defence community will tell you that the words "boast and brag" and Major-General Thompson are entirely incompatible. You will find no self-justification here and a refreshing lack of inflated ego.
In the Peat!.......2002-06-05
I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down. The author was frank in his criticisms and flowing in his praise. I thought the descriptions of the tactical battles from the brigade commander's perspective were fascinating. The diagrams of 3 Commando Brigade's major battles were invaluable in digesting the detailed narrative and fully appreciating the enormity of the Brigade's mission. The professionalism and proficiency of this storied unit is given it's just due on these 159 pages. I think the true legacy of this text for me was how it has ignited a curiousity in me to read more about The Battle of the Falklands. Would like to know if there is a companion book out there from the Argentine infantryman's perspective that would shed some light on their actions.
Good flowing account.......2002-06-04
Julian Thompson's NO PICNIC is an easy to read yet informative account of the 1982 Falklands War. Julian Thompson commanded the 3rd Commando Brigade, the initial assault force, during the Falklands War. From that perspective, he provides a history of the war. Unsurprisingly, the book focuses on the ground aspects, rather than the sea or air aspects of the war. All of the major ground battles are described. Moreover, Thompson gives in-depth insight into the operational level decisionmaking of the war. The book has a scholarly flavor because of Thompson's access to his own correspondence, assessments, and operational reports. In general, NO PICNIC is an instructive account of ground operations in modern warfare.
uncertain value.......2001-11-19
Well, half of it is boast and brag, accusations and self-defense. When successfully ignoring that one may learn something :) ... I strongly recommend to read Admiral Sandy Woodward's 'One-hundered Days - The Memories of the Falkland Battlegroup Commander' - best before reading this book because the sea-action preceeded the land-action and the abilities of the ships defined possible and impossible approaches.

Customer Reviews:
Too brutal & disrespectful for true romance.......2006-03-16
In this book the heroine leads a dual identity, a dutiful yet mysterious bride from Spain and a sea pirate known as the "Sea Siren." While I liked the character of the heroine & what a skillful female pirate she was, outwitting all the other males on Java island, I did not like the hero one bit. Now I like an Alpha male but I do not like a hero who, after he is married, keeps his malicious mistress, goes to brothels.... It just did not fare ware with me. Also, the passion between the two main characters was a weak flame at best, he loved the Sea Siren fare more than his shy bride.
Excellent Read.......2005-12-19
I read this book years ago and loved it. I feel it was one of Fern Micheals best books and wish she would go back to writing historical novels.
Beware! Worst Book Ever.......2005-05-04
I have never written a review for any book before whether it was good or bad. But this book has motivated me to urge perspective readers to beware. It went from bad to horrible and yet I hoped somewhere there would be a turning point for the better. I never found it. I loathe Reagan. He and his promiscuous self slept with anything that had two legs. He is so superficial. Anything with a face and some breasts gets him riled up even his vile mistress Gretchen. How can you justify the leading man sleeping with someone else on his wedding night? He's a pathetic character. Yet he has the audacity to throw in Sirena's face the fact that she has lunches over the Spaniards house. Maybe it was just me, but I definitely missed where Sirena fell in love with him. What is there to love? On top of all that, the abuse of women was just horrible to watch. Beware. I should have looked at the earlier comments before i read this book. It was a waste of time.
This book Depressed Me.......2005-04-04
I read alot of romance novels and usually find some good in all, but this book really depressed me and made me want to "slap" the 2 main characters. Plus as one reviewer stated, there was alot of violence to the women.
Sierna fought Regan at every turn, even though she was suppose to be in love with him. He in turn slept with anything that moved and kept a mistress, which he slept with on his wedding night. Plus, he flaunted it in front of his wife.
I disliked Sierna as she was so cold and dramatic. Even after Regan sailed for months to find her, she still didnt think he loved her.
The ending was frustrating as you had no idea if anything really worked out between them.
I have started the second book and it opens with Regan is someone elases bed and Sierna at home, still pushing him away.
Fern Michaels is a very talented writer and I hate to give a bad review, but this book really was depressing.
I will see what the second in the series holds.
The most horrible book I have ever read!.......2004-10-08
I love romance novels. I have probably read over 200, yet this was one of the most horrible books I have ever read. Sirena and her sister get brutally raped. Sirena's sister gets riped open by ONE of the rapists and killed. I, for one, think that it is absolutly sick for anyone to write of such a thing. Futher more the story gets worse when Sirena's husband continues having "affairs" with some other women.
A disgusting book, but if you want to read about rape, abuse, and the degredation of women this book is right up your alley.

Customer Reviews:
Sheer Fantasy!.......2000-05-10
I just finished reading this out-of-print book. It kept me interested throughout. It really stretches the imagination. I gave it only four stars because toward the end of the book, when the heroine is brought (captured) to a mideastern island, we are asked to believe that even though she did not speak the language, important conversations were carried on around her so that she understood them. And she was being groomed to impersonate another woman. Her accent alone would have given her away. In spite of that flaw, it went to my keeper shelf. WARNING: for those who are disturbed by such things; it was written in the seventies and features a number of rapes. This book may be hard to find.
Customer Reviews:
absolutely wonderful.......2002-08-28
This is one of the very best civil war era romance/historicals that I have ever read. I hated for it to end and will most likely re-read it soon. It has everything......I highly recommend it.

Storyline ...........2002-07-04
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "ALONE ON THE FROZEN KANSAS PRAIRIE ... Charity Burkhouser didn't stand a chance. Without a man's help the beautiful young widow would lose the homestead she'd traveled so far to claim and worked so hard to hold. When fate dropped a savagely wounded stranger on her doorstep, she knew she must fight to make him her own. She challenged the two bold Indian maidens entranced by the stranger's beautiful blond hair, and defied the town gossips who were shockec to discover a handsome man living in her cabin, sleeping in her bed -- without benefit of clergy! But most difficult of all, for the sake of the future, fearless Charity would have to confront the wild demons and beloved ghosts of Beau Claxton's past. She swore it wasn't a matter of love; it was a matter of survival. And she was determined to save him, to keep him, to make him ... passions captive."
