Book Description
Anyone who has wondered if free will is just an illusion or has asked 'could I have chosen otherwise?' after performing some rash deed will find this book an absorbing discussion of an endlessly fascinating subject. Daniel Dennett, whose previous books include Brainstorms and (with Douglas Hofstadter) The Mind's I, tackles the free will problem in a highly original and witty manner, drawing on the theories and concepts of several fields usually ignored by philosophers; not just physics and evolutionary biology, but engineering, automata theory, and artificial intelligence.
In Elbow Room, Dennett shows how the classical formulations of the problem in philosophy depend on misuses of imagination, and he disentangles the philosophical problems of real interest from the "family of anxieties' they get enmeshed in - imaginary agents, bogeymen, and dire prospects that seem to threaten our freedom. Putting sociobiology in its rightful place, he concludes that we can have free will and science too.
Elbow Room begins by showing how we can be "moved by reasons" without being exempt from physical causation. It goes on to analyze concepts of control and self-control-concepts often skimped by philosophers but which are central to the questions of free will and determinism. A chapter on "self-made selves" discusses the idea of self or agent to see how it can be kept from disappearing under the onslaught of science. Dennett then sees what can be made of the notion of acting under the idea of freedomdoes the elbow room we think we have really exist? What is an opportunity, and how can anything in our futures be "up to us"? He investigates the meaning of "can" and "could have done otherwise," and asks why we want free will in the first place.
We are wise, Dennett notes, to want free will, but that in itself raises a host of questions about responsibility. In a final chapter, he takes up the problem of how anyone can ever be guilty, and what the rationale is for holding people responsible and even, on occasion, punishing them.
Daniel C. Dennett is Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University. Elbow Room is an expanded version of the John Locke Lectures which he gave at Oxford University in 1983.
A Bradford Book.

Huge Disappointment.......2006-03-25
I became a Dennett fan when I read two other Dennett books: Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life, and Breaking the Spell : Religion as a Natural Phenomenon. Accordingly, when I read the review by Travis Cattreau (Wellington, New Zealand) I discounted it completely. That was my error; Cattreau was correct. This book represents a shallow, misleading effort at this subject.
If I could add a little to Mr. Cottreau's criticism I would point out that Dennett's largest error was that he focused exclusively upon mental constructs and tells us what freewill should/could be; he ignored the best science available at the time. And even better science is available now (2006).
It is improbable that the human concept of freewill would exist in the absence of that feeling which we call "will." And science has something important to say on this subject. Benjamin Libet's research into conscious awareness was conducted in the 1930's and Kornhuber and Deecke confirmed his findings in 1965. In my view, no serious philosophical work is complete without a discussion of this science. But Dennett ignored that work; he rehashed well worn mental constructs which are simple artifacts of inquiry about which Dennett warns in his latest book Breaking the Spell. On the subject of conscious will, Daniel M. Wegner 2002, The Illusion of Conscious Will, draws a bright line you should consider if you care about this issue.
Also, Dennett did not examine the basis in evolutionary psychology for human adaptation of that feeling studied by Libet, Kornhuber and Deecke. In Dennett's defense relative to this last point, I am not sure the term evolutionary psychology existed in 1982.
I like to imagine that if Dennett were to attempt a second effort at this subject he would do a much better job and begin with an apology for "Elbow Room."
Excellent Book.......2003-06-08
Outstanding book - Dennett is a great writer. He tackles one of the most important philosophical issues with this little volume, are we free or not? Does free-will exist or is it just a fanciful dream? Dennett does a good job of putting these questions in their right historical, philosophical, and scientific context. I read this for the first time in Grad School and have kept it in my library since. If you want to understand the issue of free-will, correctly, then you need to purchase this book and give it a read.
Stretching constraints.......2003-04-12
Dennett combines clarity of thought with clarity of expression to re-introduce the question of "free will." It's an age-old topic, but Dennett's knowledge of nature gives him fresh insight in grappling with the issue. He concedes at the outset that "free will" is usually considered a topic for academics to wrangle over. One of his special talents, however, is bringing such subjects out of the scholastic arena and into everyday life. He recognizes that all of us are plagued by outworn traditions and mind-blinding prejudices. He wants us to free our minds of these restraints. From there, he hopes we will enter a future based on more rational concepts. It's an ambitious programme, but one Dennett presents with outstanding conceptual ability and skillful prose.
Dennett's use of the "intuition pump" to expose the "bogeymen" that plague our reason makes him unique among philosophers. It's an analysis tool that more should emulate. More significantly it's a method we should all learn. Rigid thinking leads us down wrong paths and this work is a guidebook for avoiding that. One of the wrong paths is the idea that "free will" and "determinism" are absolutely separate - there is no way to reconcile the two concepts. Dennett shows that there are many forms of "determinism" in nature, and we are part of nature. Humans, however, have a decision-making capability the rest of nature lacks. We have "elbow room," based on our consciousness, which gives us the ability to make choices. The dividing line between what nature imposes and our mentality allows, is vague and indistinct, sometimes contradictory, but it's there. Dennett wants us to recognize, so far as we can, which is which.
Dennett concedes that there's an apparent paradox in this view. If we are the product of evolutionary forces, why isn't our behaviour preset in our genes? It is, according to Dennett, but exercises only limited influence. Our complex intellect allows us to modify those natural roots and give us what we see as unlimited choices. We call this condition "free will". Dennett reminds us, however, that free will is no more an absolute than determinism. Dennett's rejection of absolutes in any guise have led to many critical assaults on his work. Yet, as almost the sole philosopher to adopt natural selection as part of his thinking, he has shown his work to be the most rationally based of all. Far from "dodging" issues, he shows how this open approach can actually lead to a firmer grasp of issues. As he points out, the issue is not a "choice" of absolute options, but "control" over the conditions. It's not just choosing which path, but perhaps the building of a new one.
For Dennett, a topic such as "free will" is far from limited to academic discussion. A clear concept of what free will entails has ramifications in law, education and many social policies. He addresses many aspects of applying his definition of free will in the final chapter "Why Do We Want Free Will?". With a strong sense of the pragmatic, Dennett shows why our understanding of the concept has meaning for us all. With his witty style and practical approach to what otherwise might be an obscure topic, Dennett has given us a highly readable and realistic overview. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
Well on the way........2003-02-08
Dennet's approach to free will seems to have two main thrusts. First, Dennet explains, and I think very convincingly, that even in a deterministc world our deliberations matter for the issues we expect and want them to matter to. They are part of the causal fabric and they affect the outcome.
He also starts down an interesting road with regard to what determinism really means and why it might not be so bad. He points out, I think rightly, that the future is unkowable in principle for anyone (except an opmipotent being) because of chaotic effects. This means that in principle (not just in practice) even if we had all the information and knew all the laws of physics we could not predict what will happen, not be able to predict the future. So even though we will tread only one path through life (some day we wand others will be able to look back and see that path) we don't know what it will be. This is a good idea, but as Dennit admits it needs more filling in. The idea is interesting but the implications are still quite unclear to me.
So we have two major threads. First, our deliberations matter (at least for some things and more likely for the things that we expect or want them to matter to) and second, the future is an unknown and therefore contains genuine opportunities. Together these ideas can actually support the seeming contradiction that even in a determined world, we have free will.
I don't agree with everything in the book and there is clearly more filling ut to be done on some of the more inetersting issues, especially the implications of those issues. However, the book is entertaining, thought provoking, and sheds significant light on the issue by cleaing up some bad conceptual muddles. Also, it will be just plain good for your brain. I would recommend it to anyone interested in this question.
Good Enough for Who?.......2002-10-23
The author's thesis is that most people have a muddled conception of what determinism entails, and that if they thought about it, they would realize that it really isn't as bad as it seems. I have to agree and disagree with this thesis. First, I would agree that determinism would not necessarily feel bad if it is true. As long as you have a feeling that "you" are the one making the decision and not somebody else, the average person is gonna be happy.
However, there are a lot of Christians in the western world, and free will really does have to be defined in a certain way for Christian belief. Of course determinism is not acceptable to Chirstians, for theological reasons!
I do agree with the author that free will is never defined by its defenders. They always tell us what it's not. It's not determinism. It's not randomness. It's that other thing that we haven't figured out how to spell yet.
Overall, the thesis is interesting and should get you to thinking what determinism might "feel like" if it were indeed true. Or maybe you already know what it feels like...

Required Reading for my MBA Intl. Business class.......2005-05-16
Do you ever find yourself in a large bookstore overwhelmed by the sheer number of titles, and wonder how so many new ideas continue to emerge in such mass quantity? Well, this is one of those books that keep us returning to bookstores with faith in the fact that we will not always leave disappointed! This book is unique in its perspective on a subject I am interested in as a professor of international business (Zicklin School of Business; Baruch College, City University of New York) - cross cultural understanding. Written in a pen indicative of ample experience in Japan's corporate world, yet from an outside Western perspective, it reveals nuances of Japanese business culture that only an expatriate can easily discern. "No Elbow Room" is blunt to a pain yet carefully objective and fair in its exposé of little known tidbits of Japanese culture and business protocol outside of the Island nation itself. Yet while set in Japan, I found myself easily adapting lessons learned to virtually any cross-cultural setting, prompting me to list this book as required reading in my "Foreign Markets, Cultures, Regimes" class. This is a self-authored text, that no doubt a large publishing house will soon discover and market to the masses. The book is short (179 pages) and a quick yet informative read. I recommend it for not just international business scholars, but as an aid for sociology class discussions, gender-relations discussions, for anyone interested in international relations, and particularly for anyone wishing to travel to Japan, particularly from the West. And if you think you're well traveled and immune to culture shock, you must pick up this book!
A Trip into the Culture of Sameness.......2005-04-23
No Elbow Room is a quick and informative read into the Cultural mind set of Japanese relationships. It opens up for examination a world of contradicting correctness and sheds light on some of my own experiences in Japan. You will read it from cover to cover enjoying the wonderful illustrations and lighthearted humor.
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2005-02-23
Fun, Fun, Fun. A funny and informative documentary of first-hand experiences in Japan. A must if you are considering working for a few years for a company in Tokyo. Also a must if you want to get insight into the workings of a culture totally different from American and European cultures. The illustrations are hilarious. The book is precise with marvelous drawings. There are informative comments on improving the lot of women in Japan. Be prepared for a fun ride!
Fascinating Read!.......2005-01-22
Kenneth writes a detailed and fascinating read. What an experience. Having stayed in Japan myself for a while, I found No Elbow Room to confirm some things I had suspected about living in Japan. Great book!
Fascinating Look.......2005-01-12
I think that this book is a fascinating look into living and experiencing a new culture. I think anyone who has ever had the opportunity to work in a different country and experience a new culture can relate to the humorous, shocking, as well as serious experiences that Mark has as he is a new grad of MIT and finds himself working for a Japanese company in Japan for the first time. His humor as well as insights into Japanese culture make this a fascinating book.
While this book is a joy to read,it is also very informative about Japanese culture, including areas such as Corporate Japan, the education system in Japan, family life in Japan, and social expectations, which I believe are often misunderstood by many Americans.

McPherson's second collection of short stories won the Pulitzer Prize, an honor it richly deserved for his fine writing and unique perspective. The range here is astounding: "The Story of a Dead Man," is reminiscent of "bad-man" folk songs like "Railroad Bill" or "Stagolee"; "The Faithful" shows the clash of generations in the story of a stubborn barber; while the title story depicts McPherson's uncompromising, yet optimistic, vision for an integrated America.
Book Description
A beautiful collection of short stories that explores blacks and whites today, Elbow Room is alive with warmth and humor. Bold and very real, these twelve stories examine a world we all know but find difficult to define.
Whether a story dashes the bravado of young street toughs or pierces through the self-deception of a failed preacher, challenges the audacity of a killer or explodes the jealousy of two lovers, James Alan McPherson has created an array of haunting images and memorable characters in an unsurpassed collection of honest, masterful fiction.

Missed Connections.......2006-07-07
A man and his wife traveling in London have been told by friends to look up a local fellow named X, who will show them a good time. The man dials X's number.
"'They send warm regards from Atlanta,' I added smoothly.
'Yes,' X said. 'They're fine people. I always regretted I never got to know them well.'
'They're fine people,' I said.
'Yes,' X allowed. 'I've got a bit of a flu right now.'"
People keep doing that to each other in James Alan McPherson's "Elbow Room," a Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of short stories first published in 1979 which revolves around the human inability to connect, whether because of racial, social, or romantic reasons, not to mention this guy in London, as seen in the charming, low-key "I Am An American," who simply can't be bothered to meet up with a pair of strangers and doesn't mind being cold about it. Here is a bittersweet, often pungent, often rambling series of tales in which the story is often less than the way it's being told.
Is it normal for a man to accost a woman in a doctor's waiting room and ask how she got that scar on her face? That's how "The Story Of A Scar" begins, and though the tale she tells is less involving upon reflection, McPherson's halting, sometimes querulous way of giving it to you reminds you of the power of narrative as character.
Points are less important, even to be avoided. Any story poised to make some point inevitably drifts off into other directions. McPherson's own identity as a black American writer is a pronounced part of "Elbow Room," and reflected in the blackness of the central characters, but any racial concerns found herein are often muted, as they are in "A Loaf Of Bread," the story of a Jewish storekeeper singled out for price-gouging practices by his black customers, by McPherson's reflections on the failed need of folks, whether they be merchant and customer or husband and wife, to come together.
The best story in the collection, by far, is "The Story Of A Dead Man," really a brilliant piece of writing equally harrowing and hilarious, featuring a sad washout of a street hood who, missing an eye and any options in life, has no pleasure left to him other than scandalizing his uptight cousin in front of the cousin's snooty wife and in-laws. Billy Renfro is one of those characters you never forget once you meet him, and McPherson gives him a vividness and style that would make for a worthy centerpiece in any novel.
There are a couple of other stories here I enjoyed reading, like "I Am An American" and "The Faithful," about a barber-preacher who won't adjust to changing times that is the book's most straightforward story and its clearest-eyed meditation on lost connections. But I had a hard time making my own connection to some of his other stories, less I think because I don't share McPherson's skin color than because he keeps himself intentionally obscure to his reader as a rule, and works his narrative devices in such a way that more conventional elements like character, story, and dialogue are left by the wayside.
While I often didn't get McPherson, I did find the experience of trying worthwhile. Nearly every story has something unique or arresting going for it. It's a more complicated form of fiction from an era when serious fiction was expected to be complicated like that, sometimes to its future detriment.
A Look in the Mirror.......2004-05-19
This set of twelve short stories is an introspective into the lives of people who live in our very communities but have never gotten around to knowing them very well. James McPherson explores that world and brings it to us in an almost lyrical way from a most colorful experience in the fourth-grade to a pastor who loses his flock because he cannot adjust to modern times to a young couple that must deal with their respective parents in a mixed marriage. This 1978 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is a look into a mirror and we see the diversity that has become our culture heritage.
Snapshots.......2002-11-26
Purposeful or not, the stories get progressively better as you move through the collection. But that does not mean that they do not start off well.
The three stories that made the biggest impact on me, however, are the last three. In particular, Enough for the City, a rumination on life and love, is enchanting and complex, and it is quite unbelievable that McPherson was able to achieve those qualities in so few pages. Perhaps the most manipulative of McPherson's stories, it is nonetheless clever and contemplative.
Take time to sit with this collection of short stories. I am quite certain that there are many aspects of the book that I missed, but will hope to gain a better understanding of the lives described as I think more about it.
Not only are the stories important tales to be told, they are also incredibly pleasant to read- with some very witty lines- such as the Southern African-American child's mother who suggested that if you work hard at being a good and upstanding individual, it meant that when you died, you would finally make it to......New York.
Good stuff!.......2000-09-27
Collected here are a dozen stories which deal with people's lives, families, interactions, relationships, and experiences as a part of African American society. The result is an engrossing group of stories that move quickly and enjoyably. My only qualm is that perhaps I didn't feel it deserved the Pulitzer, but only mildly. It's good reading.
MacPherson a Master of the Form.......2000-04-11
In his Pulitzer Prize-winning collection, the author plays on our tendency to see people and events from inside our own little boxes. His characters are snared by assumptions, misled by appearances as they try to "read" experience and find and/or make places for themselves. The prose is gorgeous, full of sensory details and wit.

The Spanish version of Mercy.......2007-03-05
From the very first "Heartbreaker" to the second in the series "Mercy" then "Killjoy", "Murder List" and "Slow Burn" - Julie Garwood keeps me coming back for more. Her next one will be about Jordon Buchanan and I am eagerly anticipating it's release date. My only complaint is that I truly believe the Garwood needs to write a book focusing on Noah. He is such a colorful character. I can't even imagine what kind of woman would be able to enchant his wandering heart. That's one that I'm sure would be worth the wait.
Avid Reader.......2007-01-02
::GRIN:: I had to chuckle about the one star reveiw. No fault can be put on Julie Garwood for the fact that 'Mercy' has been translated to other languages. That would actually be an encouraging point to read her books. I've read the historical as well as her modern fiction. I'm a fan all around, but I have to admit that her FBI/crime romance series has me constantly checking for the next addition. Mercy kept me interested, and guessing, from open to close. It would be a wonderful addition to anyone's library.
It means 'Mercy'..........2006-10-04
I can't believe someone was able to submit a 1 star rating because it was written in Spanish! The title was in Spanish--duh! The English version of this book is 'Mercy' and it was great. I've read all of Garwood's books and was glad she made the transition to fiction. She is a talented writer. I loved this book and read it in 2 days. It will make you laugh and keep you enthralled through the entire book.
I returned this book........2006-08-15

Customer Reviews:
Book sent in Spanish.......2007-10-03
I was disappointed that the book I received was in Spanish. I did not select Spanish for the language. When I asked for an exchange I was told it was not available. I was told I received credit for the book on my credit card but since I haven't received my bill yet I don't know if this was done or not. I wonder if I received credit for the postage to return the book.
