Danger on midnight river.......2005-12-15
Daniel took last look at his bedroom. He grabbed his suitcase and his sleeping bag his mother work days at the coner cafe in town. it took them a year to save up enough money to send Daniel to Eagle nest in the Premonition Moutains. Daniel didnt want to the camp. His dad died in the Rocky mountains with his uncle smitty. There is a bigstorm while they are driving and the wind almost blew them off the road. Branches clawed at his face. The current yanked his legs under neath the tree. Daniel held on with what strength he had but he kept going and going and he finally made his way up to the tree.
Cameron's Review.......2005-04-08
Have you ever been thrown into a river in a car when it is sinking? Well Daniel has in Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulson. Daniel is with some of the boys from his school. Although he does not like them, he still helps them on their adventure. If you want to find out if Daniel survives you will have to read the book Danger on Midnight River.
The age group for this book is between 10 & 12. This book is very adventurous, and it is also helpful for camping. One of the weak points in this book is the ending. And one of the strong points is the crash.
Danger on Midnight River.......2002-04-24
Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulsen is an adventure story. Daniel was a strong swimmer, but the swift-moving current was too much for him. It was all he could do to keep his head above the surging waves. A couple of times he thought he heard someone yelling. But for now he had his own problemes. The river was freezing cold and it offered no way out
Review of Danger On Midnight River.......2002-04-24
Danger On Midnight River by Gary Paulsen is a world of adventure book .
Danger On Midnight River is about when a character named Daniel helps save his worst enemies because they make fun of Daniel. This book is very interesting ,and could probably help you in daily life today. Also, this book made me want to read the next chapter, the next chapter, and the next chapter. So, if you like adventure books, this would be the book for you. Read this book to find out what happens to Daniel and his worst enemies. By: Nicole Smith
Danger on Midnight River.......2002-04-24
I like Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulsen. It was a good adventure story. I liked it because it was realistic and made me think of my life. You see, Daniel (the main character) did not want to go to camp, but he got in the van anyways. Did Danny end up at camp or did he end up somewhere else? Read this adventure story to find out!
Book Description
History lies heavily on South Africa, and in an original literary form—half-history, half-reportage—Adam Hochschild brings to bear a life-time’s familiarity with the country. He looks at the tensions of modern-day South Africa through a dramatic prism: the pivotal nineteenth-century Battle of Blood River—which determined whether the Boers or the Zulus would control that part of the world—and its contentious commemoration by rival groups one hundred fifty years later. This incisive book is an unusual window onto a society that still today remains divided.

Unraveling the complexities of South Africa.......1999-12-03
I read this book while I was visiting South Africa and I would encourage it for anyone who is interested in an overview of life under apartheid. It was published just before apartheid ended, so the reader must look to other sources for a post apartheid look at South Africa, but I found this book to be well written, insightful, and interesting. South Africa is a very complex culture and that complexity is not always portrayed in American media. Hochschild lived in South Africa and his love for the people is evident in this work.

Like the mythical Polish shtetl of Blaszka in which it is set, The River Midnight is boisterous, tangled with secrets, and startlingly generous. Told more as nine interwoven stories, Lilian Nattel's debut novel portrays Jewish village life in the 19th century as both dense and wondrous, something akin to Gabriel García Márquez's Macondo--with similar touches of magic realism. The novel uses a roughly nine-month period in 1894 as its framework, each chapter recounting many of the same events through the eyes of successive characters. Along the way we encounter the pettiness, charity, gossip, and customs that sustain the village, making its cramped life both full and frustrating. At the center of this whirl is Misha, the midwife, whose own pregnancy is one of the book's abiding mysteries, and who, despite her inscrutability, elicits a resolute affection from her fellow villagers: the men who have loved or admired her, and the women she has befriended, provoked, and, ultimately, redeemed. "I have to hold the secrets of the whole village," Misha explains, and as we learn of her girlhood friendships and adult loves, the twined network of those secrets becomes increasingly apparent.
The novel's ambitious fragmentation, while it may occasionally lead us down the same stretch of road, is undeniably effective--revealing the bottomless texture of mingled lives. And while the story's magic realism is a bit intermittent and tangential, Nattel more than compensates with lush, scrupulous detail and an unerring eye for the tension between self-interest and benevolence. In The River Midnight, she has created a world where flesh and prayer, accident and magic, coincide. --Ben Guterson
Book Description
In her stunning debut novel, Lilian Nattel brilliantly brings to life the richness of shtetl culture through the story of an imagined village: Blaszka, Poland. Myth meets history and characters come to life through the stories of women's lives and prayers, their secrets, and the intimate details of everyday life.
When they were young, four friends were known as the vilda bayas, the wild creatures. But their adult lives have taken them in different directions, and they've grown apart. One woman, Misha, is now the local midwife. In a world where strict rules govern most activities, Misha, an unmarried, independent spirit becomes the wayward heart of Blaszka and the keeper of town secrets. But when Misha becomes pregnant and refuses to divulge the identity of her baby's father, hers becomes the biggest secret of all, and the village must decide how they will react to Misha's scandalous ways.
Nattel's magical novel explores the tension between men and women, and celebrates the wordless and kinetic bond of friendship.

Nuanced and magical.......2007-07-08
It's been a few years since I read this novel, but I continue to recommend it to others every chance I get. There was not a moment or word of this book that I didn't enjoy. The wonderful thing about the novel is how it captures a time and place while also conveying the contradictions and wonderful gray-ness of life's unexpected circumstances; rather than a black-and-white morality play, it creates a complex and true world in a setting that usually inspires a less complex vision. It also provides a rich array of women's paths, without giving a sense of stock stereotypes. Somehow the book manages to be magical and appealing, without being sentimental or glib. A wonderful read.
The Best Book in the Last Ten Years.......2007-02-25
Although the first few chapters of the book can be a little confusing (until you understand the structure of the book), the book is a masterpiece. I am a lover of short sentences, spare description, and fast-paced storytelling (e.g., Ernest Hemmingway, Raymond Chandler, etc.); however, Nattel's descriptions were a pure delight, simply delicious, and her character development was every bit as good as I've ever had the pleasure to read. Thank you Nattel for one of the best reads of my life!
A wonderful view of shtetl life.......2007-01-05
Lillian Natal's story, full of magic realism and immaculately researched detail is a Chagall-like word portrait of the characters and life in a Polish shtetl in the 1880s and 90's. I loved it!
Mystical.......2006-03-06
This tale of a Polish Jewish community is tightly woven and gently pulls the reader in. The lives are so interconnected, and seeing the different perspectives of the characters and how their decisions have affected one another throughout the years provides insight and a delightful feel of conspiracy on the part of the reader. Nattel's descriptions of the characters and setting are misty and almost surreal -- much like an impressionist painting. She shows true artistry.
A lovely tale, beautifully told........2005-12-22
A wonderful, rich story of life in an 19th century Polish shetl told from the perspective of several characters, male and female. The author infuses her characters with such life they leap off the page, and it was certainly refreshing to read about female sexuality told with such candor and wit. The storyline can sometimes become confusing, as the author jumps back and forth re-telling the same events from different perspectives, but this is a minor issue that does not distract from this wonderful novel. There is also a healthy dose of Yiddish idiom here as well, but the glossary is thorough and highly entertaining! 4.5 stars.

A real page turner!.......2004-05-31
This book is a wondeful read! I couldn't put it down, the characters are truly something to look into! Trevin, the daring bandit, with a rough outside and a passion that flows through the fair Lady Gywnn. I found it to be a great love story, not to mention the extreme plot! The action was an attention grabber, all around something no one should miss!
One of the best books I have ever read!.......2003-09-07
When I read Dark Ruby, I couldnt put it down! The dialouge takes you back in time, the romance is juicy and sizzling, the plots have you sitting on the end and wanting more, this book is a real page turner!
Mmmmmm...Hold On Just One Moment Here..........2001-02-28
Let me get this straight. This Lord Roderick has supposedly killed two wives when they fail to give him sons. All right. Now he's angling on Wife #3, whom he has left pure and virginal while he goes off to do whatever it was that important Welsh lords did. In a frenzy, and detecting a pattern in her husband, Lady Gwynn first drags her midwife into her chamber to check her for pregnancy (was she expecting that you-know-who was coming back). Imagine a lusty young thief beer goggling tha lady during the useless exam...and then being invited to spend three days in her bed so that she might get pregnant and pass the kid off as her husband's (assuming her husband is stupid enough to forget he's never slept with his wife). Okay, right there the book was ruined for me--Gwynn proves early on that she's too stupid (or clueless) to make a good heroine. Dark Ruby is readable, even if it isn't particularly likeable. Just be prepared to have your sense of disbelief suspended.
Fantastic! I couldn't put it down!.......1998-04-07
I'll read anything that Lisa Jackson writes. I've been a big fan of her contemporaries and now I love her historicals! Don't miss this fabulous book!
Bestselling category writer makes fantastic historical debut.......1998-01-23
In 1271 Wales, Lord Roderick of Rhydd is known for killing wives who fail to leave him with an heir. His current spouse, Lady Gwynn desperately prays that she will soon give birth to a boy. Gwynn has a slight reprieve as Roderick is off fighting. When Gwynn nabs Trevin McBain hiding inside her room, she sees him as an avenue to protect her future. If he makes love to her, she will allow him to leave along with the valuable ring he was trying to steal. Trevin accepts the terms. For the next three days, they make enjoyable love even though he is shocked to learn that she was a virgin. Meanwhile Roderick is captured by his enemy.
In 1284, Roderick finally escapes and returns home. When he gazes upon his son Gareth, he immediately denounces Gwynn of cuckolding him. When he roughs Gwynn, Gareth kills him. Roderick's brother, Ian, becomes the new lord and to protect her son, Gwynn marries Ian. Trevin, who has become a Baron, wants to recognize his biological son as his heir. When Trevin and Gwynn meet for the first time in thirteen years, they realize that their teenage attraction was actually a deep abiding love. However, before they can pursue a future together, they must save Gareth from his "uncle".
When a renowned contemporary romance writer tries to enter the Medieval romance sub-genre, skeptics from both worlds abound. However, in the brilliant hands of Lisa Jackson, readers should not be shocked that the talented author facilitates such a switch without losing any of the charm of her modern tales. DARK RUBY is a well-written, action-packed novel story filled with interesting characters. The obviously multifaceted Ms. Jackson is a welcome addition to the Medieval romance book world.

why all the bad reviews?.......2006-11-02
Wow. i am confused as to why their are so many bad reviews. this is one of the best books in the series so far and i am not even finnished with it! i like it so much i came down to the pc to search and see what else this author has written and if she has done anymore of this series.
yes it is a bit confusing in the beginning. most crazy plots take a few pages to get everything in line most times.
i guess this is a love it or hate it book and i am a reader of a lot of books and consider myself a pretty good judge on what is good and what is bad.
I would recomend it
a keeper!! i hope more is written about the deamons in detail this opened up a whole new exciting world to explore.
barf.......2006-08-27
This is quite possible the worst book I've ever read. The plot is horrible, the characters shallow and there is an icky feeling that you are actually reading a bad Jerry Springer episode. The only characters I liked were the daughter and her pet. The bad guy is hate her/love her and dies way to easy. The good guy doesn't care that it was less than a day and a half since she was forced in mind if not body to "mate" with the bad guy before he "mates" with her. The whole thing ends with guess who the daddy is for her new baby. The only thing missing to make this story any more tacky is a dna test and a chair throwing fight. I recommend this book if you need a door stop or perhaps some kindling. To bad zero stars isn't an option!
A struggle to read, but still glad I did........2006-07-15
Claudia Donavan is a human woman just trying to survive in the Crimson City. Life is chaotic enough, but with demons infiltrating the police force, no one can be trusted. When her daughter is kidnapped, Claudia goes after her and finds herself thrust into the demon world of Orcus. Her only ally, Tiberiu Korzha cannot be trusted and isn't very popular amongst the vampire - his own kind.
Carolyn Jewel has written a very interesting novel built on the determination of what a mother would go through for the love of her child. Claudia, like the rest of the humans on the police force from Crimson City, is way out of her element; plus she is getting used by the demons and doesn't know it yet.
What surprised me the most about this story is that the pace was not as frantic as I expected. Claudia is very afraid of what is happening and what will happen to her daughter if she doesn't rescue her; but, even though she and Tiberiu are running for their lives and trying to escape the demons while on Orcus the pace of the book was very slow. Because the events transpiring and the pace of the book were at odds it was a struggle for me to continue reading the middle of the book.
What I did really like about A DARKER CRIMSON is that you do get to see the "enemy" - the demons from Orcus. I really liked this because while the humans are fighting to survive on Earth, they are doing the same on Orcus. You have innocent lives on both sides just like you have the extreme radicals that want to infiltrate the other world to destroy it. Reading this book is almost like getting to see the fight for survival from the eyes of the other camp, even though both Claudia and Tiberiu are from Earth.
Something else I think is note worthy about A DARKER CRIMSON that may be a deterrent for some readers: Carolyn is forcibly taken as a mate by one of the demons. While he seduces her, it is still against her will. I mention this only because I've heard so many readers not wanting to read this type of story. The demon is a main character in Claudia's life and serves as both a protagonist and an antagonist which I also found very interesting about this book.
All in all, this is a very unique addition to the multi-author Crimson series as it has plenty of its own merits to offer. I kind of look at A DARKER CRIMSON like a classic novel: a struggle to read but overall, a good book.
The Series is Very Captivating.......2006-06-13
I love the whole series, I've read three so far and can't wait to get the rest.
I want to live in Crimson City.......2006-05-21
I thought this was a great book. Yes - it was confusing at the beginning. I think the reason was I got these books out of order from the library this one was available before "Through a Crimson Veil" so I did not get the demon related "stuff" and references to charactor's from the preceding book. Then it got really good - Carolyn created a complex demon world where all the rules change. and Yes she could have "fleshed" out the last chapters so that "bam" and they lived happily ever after did not happen. But this book is better than average!! It shows a great deal of talent and imagination. I think Carolyn Jewel is on a par with Laurell K Hamilton in creating exciting new worlds!! The ladies (writers) of Crimson City rock!!!

And it went on, and on and on............. ugh!!!.......2007-09-03
This book had an interesting enough story line, but I found that the way it was delivered was lacking. I found the writing boring and it did not quite grip me. I found the characters where lacking and that some of their relationships where a bit far fetched and unbelievable.
I give it two stars only because the concept of the story was interesting and some of the action scenes where good allowing me to actually finish the book. I won't be rushing out to pick up another book by Lisa Jackson any time soon.
Wonderfully Enticing!.......2001-11-09
A beautiful story, portrayed perfectly by Lisa Jackson...includes action, drama, romance (duh.) and intense mental situations...then don't forget spicy comedy on a ship...heeheehee...You may just find yourself saying "nay" more than you ever have....
Lot's of thinking, no actual romance.......2001-06-19
Where was the romance? The characters didn't even really know each other. Don't get me wrong, there was action but little romance. There was little communicating, just a lot of thinking. By the end, one has to wonder how the two of them fell in love when they barely knew each other. I gave it 2 stars because it wasn't boring but had action. There wasn't much of a romance in the story.
dark sapphire.......2000-09-27
Lisa Jackson writes about characters and relasionships and thoughts and feelings that are so out of the story. These characters never even have time to get to know one another, and their emotions are all bouncing off the walls in such corny ways. Using too many describing words even for the littlest quiet scenes. I call this OVERKILL in the biggest way.
Intriguing. Keeps You in Suspense.......2000-08-13
Eleven years ago Sheena saved Keegan's life, a fact that he cannot presently remember. Now, she is being sought for the murder of her husband on her wedding night and stowsaway on Keegan's ship, Dark Sapphire. She is discovered several days later and although Keegan thinks he has seen her before, he does not really remember her, although she remembers Keegan.
Sheena is frightened and eventually jumps ship and swims to shore, almost drowing in the process. A farmer finds her and takes her to his home; however, he also found the jewels hidden in her boots and takes one of them. Sheena is trying to reach her father, Jestin, so she can explain what occurred on her wedding night, but Fawn, Jestin's wife and Sheena's stepmother, has her knight, Morgan, searching for Sheena. Fawn is not a nice person. She has borne Jestin three daughters and is again pregnant, swearing she carries a son who will inherit Jestin's fortune.
Sheena and Keegan meet again and spend some time together; however, they are captured by Morgan and she is brought before her father and Keegan's crew are guarded on ship. The Dark Sapphire which was initially taken by Keegan some eleven years before and which he has forgotten, reappears.
All is not what it seems between Fawn, Jestin and Morgan. Fawn has her long awaited son, but all is not well.
This story moves pretty fast, but I can't see giving it five stars.
