Over two decades, Andre Dubus has proven himself an essential American writer. "He restores faith in the survival of the short story" (
Los Angeles Times), and now - with his first collection in nearly ten years - he demonstrates more powerfully than ever before both his mastery of the form and his understanding of our imperfect lives. In each of the fourteen stories in
Dancing After Hours, Dubus uncovers the mystery of ordinary life as his characters - often perseverant, yet occasionally crazed by desire, loss, or disappointment - wrestle with love, faith, and luck. Whether at a roadside bar or a family camp, in the everyday rigors of domesticity or its violent extremes, these lives unfold with an inevitability that is moving, sometimes redemptive, always surprising.
Book Description
A
New York Times Notable Book of the Year
From a genuine hero of the American short story comes a luminous collection that reveals the seams of hurt, courage, and tenderness that run through the bedrock of contemporary American life. In these fourteen stories, Dubus depicts ordinary men and women confronting injury and loneliness, the lack of love and the terror of actually having it. Out of his characters' struggles and small failures--and their unexpected moments of redemption--Dubus creates fiction that bears comparison to the short story's greatest creators--Chekhov, Raymond Carver, Flannery O'Connor.
"A master of the short story...It's good to have Andre Dubus back. More than ever, he is an object of hope."--Philadelphia Inquirer
"Dubus's detailed creation of three-dimensional characters is propelled by his ability to turn a quiet but perfect phrase...[This] kind of writing raises gooseflesh of admiration."--San Francisco Chronicle

Adolescent Waste of Time and Paper.......2005-04-25
This has to be one of the worst books I have ever read. You go from story to story hoping that the next one will be engaging or interesting, but it never happens. Each of the stories in this book could have just have easily come from a 15 year old writing English assignments who also happens to have a bizarre fascination with bowel movements and bodily functions in general. In summary, truly awful. Don't waste your time or money on this one. Keep looking.
Short Story Rebirth.......2003-12-10
These days it seems that all the drama in life in fiction is focused on the under 30 crowd. "Dancing After Hours" re-introduces life into the 30+ short story protagonist, giving us realistic daily lives spiced with sin, redemption, and ponderings that make it seem not so bad to keep getting older. The well-established setting of Boston does not beat you over the head, but subtly insinuates itself over the first three stories. In short, it's highly enjoyable with a simple feel.
Not a master, but a master artisan.......2002-10-10
The back blurb makes some pretty hefty comparisons that, while vindicating for those of us who see Dubus as an underappreciated talent in an underappreciated genre, the collection doesn't quite live up to.
Dubus is not a master so much as a master artisan. He's not Michelangelo, he's one of the anonymous apprentices who did most of the brushwork. The stories are paragons of craftwork, written with a wonderful tightness and vividness that never fails to satisfy. The much-anthologized starting piece, "The Intruder," begins asking the questions that permeate most of Dubus's work--questions about the lines between dreams and dreamers, about the bright little worlds people invent for themselves in the face of life's relentlessness.
At the same time, you may find yourself thinking "haven't I read this somewhere else?" Dubus is very skilled at staying inside the lines when he colors, but the effect gives the appearance of variations on Cheever, Anderson, O'Conner and (most prominently) Carver. Where are the risks? Dubus never really dares to wander out on his own limb and so I think the posthumous (post-"In the Bedroom") drumming of his significance might have gotten a little out of hand.
THIS IS YOUR LIFE.......2001-08-05
After finishing this collection of stories I am asking myself just how good was it? The hype on the back of the book compares Dubus to Chekhov, Carver, and Flannery O'Connor. It might be that good. As you're reading the stories, most of which are about spiritual crises, or the equivalent, you begin to see the universality in these microcosms of life. The writer and the characters draw you into a quest for meaning and a struggle to reach into the past and change everything you regret. There are a couple of running characters in the stories who give a collection already united by theme the feel of a novel. Some of the best stories are "Blessings", in which a woman tries to sort through her emotions of a fishing trip in which the boat sank. Her family had to fend off shark attacks until they were rescued. It's a great combination of remembrance and violence. Also, "All the Time in the World" in which a woman is desperately trying to find a husband, not just a lover. I could go on for a 1,000 words about the beauty of the prose of each story but I won't. Suffice it to say that when you read these stories you see yourself reflected back through them or, if not personally, through the experience of someone you know. Whether its the questioning of existence, an affair, the senselessness of corporate America, crime, adolescence, love, regret, or physical disability. Every person seems represented here, like some great Walt Whitman poem singing the unity of everything and everyone. There was only one story that I had trouble with and it involved a woman fighting off two thugs who followed her home to rob or rape her. The way the action was described it seemed like the screenplay for some bad japanese karate movie. And sometimes it seemed as though Dubus uses the setting of a story just as background. It doesnt really matter to the telling of the story but he spends paragraphs describing what's going on as the characters walk and talk for example. I understand that he was trying to show the indifference of the outside world to the internal problems of the characters but it got a little old. But these are minor complaints. Overall, it was a great collection, which settles my own question about how good it was.
Not as good as Selected Stories.......2001-07-26
I read Dancing After Hours immediately after I read Selected Stories by Andre Dubus. I found Dancing After Hours not as enjoyable. It seemed to meander and was not as concise as "Selected". By being able to compair the two, I probabally gave this book a disservice, because the ability of this man to flat out write is undeniable.

Book Description
Maggie Quinn, Girl reporter. Honors student, newspaper staffer, yearbook photographer. Six weeks from graduation and all she wants to do is get out of Avalon High in one piece. Fate seems to have different plans for her.
High school may be a natural breeding ground for evil, but the scent of fire and brimstone is still a little out of the ordinary. It's the distinct smell of sulfur that makes Maggie suspect that something's a bit off. And when realTwilight Zone stuff starts happening to the school's ruling clique—the athletic elite and the head cheerleader and her minions, all of whom happen to be named Jessica—Maggie realizes it's up to her to get in touch with her inner Nancy Drew and ferret out who unleashed the ancient evil before all hell breaks loose.
Maggie has always suspected that prom is the work of the devil, but it looks like her attendance will be mandatory. Sometimes a girl's got to do some pretty undesirable things if she wants to save her town from soul-crushing demons from hell and the cheerleading squad.

Fun, fun, fun!.......2007-07-17
I loved this book. Suspenseful, clever and funny, Clement-Moore is obviously a skilled storyteller at weaving a complex plot that adults and teens enjoy. I left my teenage years a while ago, but I really liked these characters, especially Justin. Maggie Quinn is a character I want to read in future sequels.
AWESOMENESS!.......2007-07-13
This was seriously one of my favorite books of all time!
Rosemary Clement-Moore really outdid herself in this thrilling novel.
Hurrah!.......2007-04-08
I got this book over a vacation. I knew nothing about it, or the author, but I bought it because it looked funny. I finished it in 2 days. (One of which was a 14-hour car ride.) As soon as I finished the book in the car, it was scooped up by both my older brother and mother, because i wouldn't stop raving about it. They have been fighting over it constantly, and both enjoy it. Just goes to show how the book appeals to a wide audience! Definitely worth reading!!!
Buffy is a thing of the past........2007-04-07
I was very surpirsed at how good this book turned out to be. Most teen lit books I read are very well targeted toward the teen audience, but this was not. It can be enjoyed by readers of all ages!
I also loved the main character Maggie. She's someone I would have been friends with back in highschool and someone who I could relate to. It was very well written and is a great mixture of mystery and the supernatural. I really hope for a sequel because Maggie was such a likeable character.
A satisfying read indeed!.......2007-04-04
I bought this book on a whim having not heard or seen anything about it before coming across it in my local bookstore. Is there anything better than buying a book on impulse and finding that it was exactly what you were looking for? I think not! For fans of either Veronica Mars or Buffy this is a must read. The author does a fantastic job of creating a complete world rich with details and characters who feel real even when faced with surreal situations. This is one of those books where when you get to the end, you turn the page anyway hoping for more. After finishing my first thought was that I wanted more time with these characters. After doing a little sleuthing of my own online I am happy and relieved to know that I will get my way as the follow up book is already finished and looks to be in stores sometime next year. If you are on the fence about this one, I really recommend you pick it up, you will not be disappointed.

Book Description
She's a ghost with a disreputable past...and a heavenly mission.
With her trademark blend of sparkling humor and sizzling romance, Emily Carmichael has earned a legion of devoted fans. Now she returns to delight readers with a wickedly delicious tale of modern love--and some old-fashioned meddling....
Once, sultry Robin Rowe was the hottest madam in the whole Wild West. Then a jealous suitor shot her dead. But when the wicked Red Robin departed this life, she didn't depart this world. Instead she found herself hanging around, watching as her daughter and her daughter's daughters made first-class fools of themselves over the wrong men...until now, a hundred years later, Robin has just one descendant left.
It doesn't take a genius to see that bright, beautiful, mistrustful Maggie Potter is headed for spinsterhood. So when fate drops her on Robin's doorstep, the sexy ghost jumps at the chance to straighten out her great-great-granddaughter. Only Robin doesn't know how challenging the job of guiding Maggie's love life is going to be. For Maggie's on vacation from men--maybe even a permanent leave of absence. Still, Robin didn't get to be the most successful tart in town by giving up. Now she's prepared to do everything in her ghostly power to see that Maggie lands herself the perfect man, even if she has to teach Maggie her most erotic secrets....

A low-fat romance.......2004-07-12
Maggie Potter is allergic to love. After being dumped off the campaign trail by presidential candidate nominee, Jack Kilbourne, and being raked through the mud by the press, Maggie tries to bury her past by opening a B&B in ghost town Jerome, Arizona. Only the B&B, Red Robin's Nest Inn, has a past of its own, and it, or shall we say she, isn't willing to stay buried.
Colby Drake is a shark with killer blue eyes and a boyish charm who's hoping to sink his teeth into a story that will ruin Jack Kilbourne's presidential aspirations once and for all. And who better to help Colby with the story but the Kilbourne's scandalized ex-aide and girlfriend, Maggie Potter. Only Maggie doesn't blame Kilbourne. She blames the press, and no matter how many fireworks he and Maggie seem to ignite around each other, all she sees are shark's teeth. Luckily, Colby has someone rooting for him, or he wouldn't have a ghost of a chance winning Maggie's trust.
"Red" Robin Rowe was the biggest tart in the Old West and ran her brothel, the Red Robin's Nest, like a true mother hen. Unfortunately, she suffered a most untimely and embarrassing death before she could shed the truth of her livelihood with her daughter or dispense any motherly advice. Since her death, her family line has been cursed in love. But when Maggie Potter, Red's last living descendent, takes up residence in the old Nest, Red Robin sees her chance to make things right.
This is not one I would recommend for those interested in "hot" romance or "cool" paranormal. Neither sizzling nor scary, this light romance is exactly that - light. If you're looking for something riveting to escape into, this book isn't going to cut it. But "A Ghost for Maggie" is entertaining. I found the subplot between Maggie's sister Catherine and bookstore owner/ghost guru Thomas Matthews while shorter and sweeter, just as interesting as the main event. Sprinkle a little south western spice onto the pages, and you just might have something.

A Ghost for Maggie takes place at a bed and breakfast run by a young woman named Maggie and her stepsister Catherine. As they set up for their Grand opening in a small Arizona town outside of Sedona, strange things begin to happen. Both Maggie and Catherine begin talking with a ghost who turns out to be Maggie's great, great grandmother named Roberta `Robin' Rowe. While questioning their own sanity, they come to learn that Robin Rowe is on a mission to ensure that Maggie, as her only surviving descendant, gets fixed up with a guy for good. Though this may seem a simple task for a woman who was `the hottest madam in the Wild West' a century ago, it turns out to be quite a pursuit. In the past, Maggie has had trouble with men including the candidate for president Jack Kilbourne, who ruined her by making her out to be a bimbo, in a press scandal. Therefore, she now finds all men, especially the press, hard to trust. Ironically, she falls for Colby Drake, a reporter doing a story on her. Multiple times she vows never to talk to him again, but with a little push from an alluring and tactful ghost Maggie is able to find and keep her true love. Overall, the book was ok. If u r looking for a nice simple read, read it because it is good enough to keep u interested, but don't expect to be surprised with the ending.
Laugh out loud funny!.......2000-10-15
Funny and fun but a little predictable. No matter. Highly recommend.
A Ghost for Maggie.......2000-01-28
Haven't finished the book yet; but thought it might be of interest to those that read the book and enjoy Emily Carmichael's work -- Just stayed for the second time in the mansion and visited with some of the "characters" which might resemble (or might not) those in the book. While the book may have its flaws; the ambience is only enchanced by staying in Jerome. If truly there was a place for an eccentric ghost, this may be it.
Look forward to finishing this book.
This was Good but not Excellent.......1999-11-25
This book is very amusing. A Ghost for Maggie is the first book I read of this author. It wasn't hot and heavy as other books. I know I only gave 3 stars ....I have a reason..The heroine is kinda weak..I mean it's like she never learns from her past relationships with slimy men..how could she fall for that Governor Jack-whatshisname...Now she falls for a man who DECEIVED her from the first time he met her and throughout the story..doesn't she realize she was being used by him..even though they made up and made love?....I was baffled that after the few days they made love..he went back to his job..isn't that like not so romantic..If I was Maggie I would have kosh him in the head!. All in all it was a good and amusing book...
Book Description
The Ferocious Beast is scared, and his friends Maggie and Hamilton want to help him. After all, everyone gets scared sometimes: Maggie is afraid of spaceships from other galaxies, and Hamilton is scared of monsters under his bed. Of course Maggie and Hamilton have never SEEN these creatures, so when the Beast finally admits his fear it all seems very funny -- until they realize that the Beast is afraid of something real AND IT'S NEXT TO THEM RIGHT NOW!
Betty and Michael Paraskevas treat childhood fears with warmth, humor, and honesty in this now book starring the beloved Ferocious Beast, as seen on Nickelodeon®.

funny story about friendship, fear and imagination.......2003-03-18
Maggie is a resourceful little girl who plays in Nowhere Land with her friends Hamilton Hocks and the Ferocious Beast. Written and drawn by mother and son team Betty and Michael Paraskevas, this trio is quite charming. The friendship between Beast and Hamilton is sometimes on shaky ground, but Maggie unites them all with her affectionate diplomacy and problem solving skills.
In this story, the Beast is embarrassed to tell his friends his secret .... he is afraid of something. Maggie and Hamilton run down a list of things that scare them -- ghosts, goblins, aliens, sea monsters, etc. -- and each time they must admit that they have never actually seen one of these creatures. Finally the Beast reveals that he is afraid of mice, which amuses his two companions until he retorts, "At least I've seen one. And there's one next to you right now." In the next frame, Hamilton and Maggie are screeching and running around as the friendly little mouse scampers off, and this always gets our toddler laughing. While I've had the same experience as another reviewer, of having my child frightened by a book or show meant to ward off fear, we did not have that experience with this book. It is funny and enjoyable.
The author uses a vocabulary surprisingly and pleasantly varied for this age-group. The end pages feature a map of Nowhere Land and the storybook illustrations are bright and colorful. This is a fun read for preschoolers and young children (and their caregivers).
My child was never afraid of going to bed before this book........2003-03-04
If your child isn't already afraid of monsters, DO NOT read this book. I had a perfectly ordinary 3 year old. Then we bought this book. Now he is scared to death of going to bed at night, afraid of monsters. Once the sun goes down and it gets dark outside, the panic begins. Again, he exhibited none of this behavior before reading this book. All of the characters in this book believe in and are afraid of monsters under the bed, goblins in the closet, etc. Even the Ferocious Beast is afraid of a mouse. What this book teaches children is to be afraid... a lesson I'd never want to teach my child. Now it's too late.
Telling children a good story is hard, made easy by few........1999-10-23
What I like best about the book is that it centers on helping children get over fears by showing them that it's only in their minds, and they can choose to alter the feeling into, surprisingly, nothing. It takes a special writer and illustrator to be to do that on a child's level. What I love about children's books is that they are simple, yet very profound--less is more, and Betty and Mickeys' book is a fine example of that.

Book Description
Something is not right in Emily's new house in the historic London neighborhood of Hound Hill. And something is not quite right with Emily. Encountering hints to her home's haunted past, she begins to experience distressing symptoms: a headache, a fever, extreme thirst, hallucinations, and, then, a doorway to an earlier period of great distress. Readers will be swept away in this riveting and suspenseful tale that vividly reveals the great suffering of the Black Death, a disease that killed almost a quarter of the population of London.
Customer Reviews:
Here Comes a Candle to Light You To Bed.......2005-05-06
This is a completely absorbing page- turner with fascinating historical details. I thought Emily, the protagonist, was particularly interesting. Many authors label their protagonists, giving them a certain type of personality that isn't very common among teenagers. Emily is normal in every way, yet she shines. This is because she is very realistic and likable. Though she is a bit downtrodden from major changes in her life (a divorce, a new home, and a new school), she doesn't whine excessively, nor does she take it unrealistically with no complaints. I was also very pleased with the ending. There was no corny parting scene where Emily's seventeenth century friends go back to their time through a swirling vortex with tears in their eyes.
I immensely enjoyed reading this book. My only complaint concerns the title. Although the book's title is The House on Hound Hill, it was originally published in Britain as Here Comes a Candle to Light You To Bed. I think the original title is much more intriguing and should not have been changed.
It made me jump in my seat.......2005-03-07
I've never been so "in" to a book that it made me jump in my seat until i read this. Prince has done a fantastic job of painting history, intruige, and fiction into this story. Everything from visions of ghosts repeating the cycle of their tragic lives, the protagonist becoming lost in the past, the past intertwining with the present, plague pits, and death make this story a favorite of mine.
the house on hound hill by rachel k........2005-02-18
The House on Hound Hill by Maggie Prince was a very good book. it had suspense, adventure, and history. it is about a 16-year-old girl, Emily, and her experienceswith the Black Plague of 1665. She has just moved into an old house in a London neighborhood called Hound Hill. She starts seeing, hearing and even smalling things from the time of the Black Death. She was transported to 1665 several times. Then she begins getting stranhge symptoms. On one last trip to 1665, she learns more about the horrors of the Plague and her new acquaintances from the time. For this trip, she stays an unusually long time and, like the other times, she doesn't know how to get back.
Blends real history with supernatural overtones.......2003-06-10
Emily's new house in London's historic neighborhood is filled with secrets of the past - secrets which bring Emily right into the past as she begins to experience plague symptoms and uncovers a doorway to an era where the Black Death killed almost a quarter of London's people. A challenging, involving story which blends real history with supernatural overtones in a riveting style.
The House On Hound Hill review.......2000-04-25
The House On Hound Hill is a wondrfull book about a teenagegirl's troubles and the plague of London. Emily is shattered by herparents recent divorce and her new neighborhood. She is depressed aboutfailing exams.Emily starts to hear whispers and meets an man looking for his cat.Soon odd things start to happen.Emily discovers the past is still alive. She periodically goes back in time and experiences London in 1665.She sees beggars and watchmen. This book describes how it was at the time of the plague. The imagery and details add colorful contrast to this sad story.I enjoyed this book because I learned about the plague.Parts of the book did seem confusing at first, but they were later explained.

Book Description
Bloodred nails, flashing white teeth, gleaming scarlet lips–Maggie Quinn has battled an ancient demon, faced down psychotic cheerleaders, and saved her best friend from certain death, but nothing can match this. Formal sorority recruitment, otherwise known as rush. But Maggie is determined to make her mark as a journalist . . . even if she is living at home and attending the local university. The only problem? The Ranger Report does not take freshmen on staff. Rules are rules. Then again, when has that ever stopped Maggie? After facing hellfire, infiltrating sorority rush should be easy. Going undercover as the Phantom Pledge will allow her to write her exposé. But when she finds a group of girls who are after way more than “sisterhood,” all her instincts say there’s something rotten on Greek Row. And when Hellweek rolls around, there might be no turning back.
