Book Description

"Steven" traces Monet's life from his childhood, through his rejection of traditional painting and the development of Impressionism, to his final, settled years in Giverny, sprinkling the report with his own drawings and comments.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars And parents learn, too!.......2007-01-29

"Claude Monet: Sunshine and Waterlilies" was a terrific book for my 7-year-old daughter. Since it is "written" from the perspective of a fifth grade student doing a report on the famous artist, the language was clear, concise, and interesting to a child my daughter's age. I learned from it, too! My daughter couldn't wait to break out her paints and try her hand at an "impressionist" painting of her own! For anyone who wants their child to learn about art, this book --and the whole series of "Smart About Art" books--is a great place to start. Your child--and you, too!--will definately enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Poppies or Waterlilies?.......2005-04-26

This is one in a series of books about artists for young children about the lives and paintings of these famous oldsters. Written as a report by a fictitious student gives a different aspect and will appeal to school children perhaps; and yet, it contains a biography of Claude Monet (the good and the bad) which appeals to adults, but especially his marvelous paintings are worth the money.

He was very handsome when he went to Paris at the age of 18, but the other painters kidded him with the nickname "Dandy" because he wore ruffled cuffs even though he was just the son of a poor grocer. As a young child in the early school years, he would draw stetches of his teachers and sell them to his classmates. The sketch he drew when he was sixteen looks like something you might see in 'The New Yorker' and is now a part of the expressionist grouping at the Art Institute of Chicago. Some years ago, my son Geoff took me there but that part was closed off for renovation. I told him it didn't matter as there was so much else to look at; as it turns out, the expressionalists are my favorites. Oh well, it was grand just being there.

'The Poppy Field' is one of his most famous, but the people in Knoxville would much prefer 'Water Lilies' because of the purple. By his 83rd birthday, he had finished twenty-two giant paintings of waterlilies. He had his own water gardens as an older man with a bridge (a photo of him standing by with his long white beard); there in his garden at Giverny the flowers were so colorful and plentiful, it could be Longwood Gardens in New Jersey. He and Renoir painted the same scene of a group of party-goers along a frog pond and the canoes pulled up for their use. Renoir's is a close-up though he has one of his trees with long hanging branches, while Monet's is more exact and clear.

He was happily married twice but the deaths took their toll; Camille had been his model for ten years before their marriage and he painted many strange pictures after her death with her face in them. When Alice died, he was so distraught he was unable to paint for some years as his eyesight diminished. In 1923, he endured eye operations and had special glasses to use for resuming his career.

Steven ends his report with "On December 5, 1926, he died (shortly after his 87th birthday). He had been happy, sad, poor and rich. In his life, Monet painted more than 2,000 paintings, which now sell for millions of dollars. They are worth it."

Some of the phrasing is for kids to understand, but the book is so full of information not included in adult biographies it is well worth the time and money to purchase this little treasure.

Book Description

In this fully updated work, Perry Slocum describes nearly 500 species and cultivars of the crowning jewels of water gardens, the waterlilies and lotuses. This book includes more than 130 of the best new hybrids introduced since the landmark Water Gardening: Water Lilies and Lotuses by Perry Slocum and Peter Robinson was published. All species and the major cultivars, including day- and night-blooming tropical and hardy waterlilies and lotuses, are described along with the author's and hybridizers' comments on the best landscape uses for each plant. Although the genera Nymphaea and Nelumbo receive special emphasis, a chapter is also devoted to the other genera in the waterlily family, Nuphar, Victoria, Euryale, Barclaya, and Ondinea. In addition to his achievements as a hybridizer, Slocum is an award-winning nature photographer. Waterlilies and Lotuses is illustrated with 350 stunning color photographs of these exotic beauties, with more than 100 photos published here for the first time. With information on hardiness, including maps for Europe and the United States, and an extensive list of suppliers of water gardening plants and equipment in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, Waterlilies and Lotuses is a truly definitive resource for water gardeners the world over.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not all inclusive.......2007-08-01

I was disappointed with this book as it did not include most of the hardy waterliles I've recently purchased (eg. Chromatella, Helvola). Perhaps I need to purchase the first Slocum book for this information?? They may be included under a different name, but if so, this does make this reference less useful as the common trade names are the key words most of us will be using to find information.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with great pictures........2006-10-23

I just bought this latest edition of Waterlilies and Lotuses after owning the last one for a few years and I was glad to see photos and information on many new varieties.

Some of the new listings, with photos, include Foxfire, King of Siam, Carla's Sonshine, Islamorada, Innocence, Miami Rose and many others.

A lot of great species lilies are also listed, with photos, such as the Victoria lilies, the Australian Gigantea lilies, Eurayle Ferox and others.

All descriptions of the lilies include information such as flower size, shape and fragrance and leaf sizes colors and spread. Also included on most lilies is the date of introduction, the person who hybridized them and the parent plants of the hybrids when known.

The authors also give recommendations as to what size pond or tub is best suited for a particular lily.

I like this book and think it can be helpful for persons deciding which plants to purchase for their pond.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to his first book on water lilies.......2005-09-20

There is a lot of information on the newer lilies, but I was disappointed there weren't more pictures of the lilies.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my review.......2006-11-10

A really spell binding book. I found it hard to put down. This is a very good way to understand how living in tiwahe and tiospaye is. A good way for one to understand the importance of relationship and kinship in Lakota culture.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2006-07-12

I have always loved stories about the West and this book opened up a whole new world. The attitudes, traditions, and the roles of women in the Dakota tribes are fascinating. Reading stories like this helps me understand my own culture a little more and what there is to be learned. Very entertaining as well as educational.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!!!.......2003-10-25

This is one of the best books I've read in some time--I just couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend it to anyone at all interested in the Native American way of life.

4 out of 5 stars Great easy reading of a remarkable nation.......2003-05-03

I really enjoyed this book. I looked forward to reading it every chance I got. It was so interesting and easy to read that it seemed to take just hours to complete it. Right away the book starts with a courageous Lakota woman who manages to give birth to the main character, Waterlily, by herself. From there, you learn of an interesting group of people who have a love and respect for their kin in a way that I have never heard of.

5 out of 5 stars A good history, a good book.......2002-11-13

As a child obsessed with the Sioux tribes, I begged my grandmother to buy me this book. I was not sorry.
In addition to being one of the best stories I've ever read, this was a fantastic look at the old ways of the Dakota.
This is a great book, and not just for people who are already interested in the subject, although that certainly can't hurt.
Oh, just read the book already.

5 out of 5 stars modern day mermaids among us........2006-01-17

i've recently read and enjoyed alice at heart, authored by deborah smith. it is an enchanting modern day mer-story which is set in the georgia sea islands and is peopled with southern belle/diva mermaids. there is mystery, romance, and a wonderful sense of humor. the writing is crisp and witty...a thoroughly enjoyable read with a slight twist on the "mermaids among us" theme. i've just begun the sequel, diary of a radical mermaid, and though the tone is quite different, from what i've read so far, it promises to be every bit as entertaining as the first book

    5 out of 5 stars Alice at heart - a FANTASTIC read.......2004-06-16

This is definately Deborah Smith at her best. I can't wait for the sequel that is due out next month. This book will carry you away to a magical place and a magical family. You may even wonder if perhaps there may be a little of the mer folk in yourself. I savored every word of this book. The characters are rich. This is by no means your ordinary run of the mill romance novel. It is well written and a pure delight!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful.......2003-07-07

Deborah Smith has created a world of breathtaking beauty, rivaled by few and equalled by none. This book is special, magical, in a way that only a very few books can be. This is a "got to" read!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical, musical and beautiful.......2003-04-01

Alice has never fit in. She was raised by her mother's family, who treated her as a chore, and not a family member. Alice has spent most of her life in and around the water, because that's where she feels most happy and at home. She can't explain why she can spend long periods of time underwater, and why she can swim better and faster than anyone else. She just knows it's what makes her happy.

In one day, the quiet existence she prefers is brought to public attention when she rescues the young daughter of the governor. Suddenly her abilities are questioned...but the publicity also brings her to the attention of the family she never knew she had, her father's family...water people, or what us landers would call them...mermaids.

This is not just a romance, it's a story of learning who you really are and accepting that. There's also a mystery from the past, and lots of old loves to be reunited. For those who have read Deborah Smith's books in the past, you know she always delivers an unbelievably wonderful read. She does not disappoint in this book either. Her writing is lyrical and magical and brings to life the underwater world of the water people. It made me a believer. This is supposed to be the first in the Waterlilies series, and I for one am looking forward to future books hinted at in this story.

5 out of 5 stars strong character study.......2002-11-10

Though it is February, Odd Alice swims the icy waters of Lake Riley high in the Georgia Mountains as if it is a summer day. Her idyllic watery solace ends with a splash and a vision. She rescues a child who fell into the lake and Griffin Randolph, the treasure seeker starring in her vision who faces death from an underwater explosion near Spain until just Alice pleaded with him to breath.

Because the child she saved is related to the Governor, Alice becomes a publicized hero with the Bonaviendier siblings attending the ceremony and claiming she is one of them. They prove their contention as they share the same webbed feet. Alice visits the three sisters at their Sainte's Point Island home where she also meets Griffin. As Alice begins to learn about her mermaid heritage, she and Griffin fall in love, but their families have been feuding for quite awhile as landlubbers and water people have never mixed.

ALICE AT HEART is a tremendous opening book of what appears to be the beginnings of a long delightful series starring the residents of Sainte's Point and the across the bay town of Bellemeade. The story line predominately focuses on a first person account by Alice, but does switch to third person accounts of other prime players deftly handled by Deborah Smith so that the audience obtains a deeper understanding of the cast. Though the tale suffers from the first novel syndrome of introducing the entire universe in one sitting, Ms. Smith provides a powerful and absorbing novel that at its heart is simply fun to read.

        Book Description

A garden pond only becomes a feast for the eyes with loads of plants in and around the water.

Lots of people aren't satisfied with a garden pond that livens up the landscape from spring to fall with fresh green shades alone. It should display plenty of bright splashes of color as well. This is mainly provided by the flowers of a wide variety of marsh and aquatic plants.

Species ideally suited for cultivation in and around the garden pond include numerous representatives of the iris and primula families, and of course the waterlilies. All provide a fantastic floral display. The skilful combination of members of these families can be used to ensure that from March to September there are always flowers in and around the pond, with the intervening greenery providing an attractive color contrast.

For the past 20 years Axel Gutjahr has been heavily involved with garden ponds, with a particular interest in plants. In this book he not only presents these plants through beautiful color photos and text, but also provides valuable hints on their sitting and cultivation requirements, and thus the basis for the successful setup of a perfect garden pond.

An explosion of colors with over 110 high quality photos, 64 pages, hardcover.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Just a beautiful Book.......2007-01-23

All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful fish, plants or flowers, in this case they latter, they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish etc. become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated., or supplements are produced.

This is a beautiful book and for anyone who is interested in the subject of garden ponds could prove to be that purchase that you never regret.

2 out of 5 stars Just sexy... or maybe not.......2006-07-18

The three stories are alike. The writers tried to mix a sexy story into a thriller or maybe a thriller into a sexy story. The problem was that the thrilling part of each story won't thrill you and you'd get nothing of the sexy part of each story. So if you want to read this book just for the fun of it is ok, but don't expect much of the reading.

Whether they are in uniform or not, these men have burning needs just like any other . . . men . . . and BIG GUNS OUT OF UNIFORM's men burn hot and spicy!

            Book 1 -
Sherrilyn Kenyon: "BAD To The Bone." - Grade: B
Marianne Webernec viewed herself as painfully average and her mother's words "about acceptance and it could be worse" did little to console. So, today . . . eagerly . . . Marianne would walk on the wild side! As the grand prize winner in the Hideaway Heroine Sweepstakes Contest, Marianne Webernec would experience her ultimate fantasy. She would become her all-time favorite romance heroine and finally live life savagely!
Highly trained as a special covert agent, Kyle Foster was everything Marianne deemed perfect. Kyle Foster was the ultimate pipe dream. He had electric blue eyes, and he was handsome, rugged, and blessed with a hunky hero body. Too bad, he was not part of the Hideaway Sweepstakes winner's package!

Suddenly, six boring weeks of R&R were starting to revitalize Kyle Foster! Normally, Marianne Webernec was not the type who drew his attention, yet the little schoolteacher from Peoria, Illinois was everything he wanted! And he would savor the challenge she offered!

*** Comments: Normally, stories found in an anthology format suffer from the "lack of room" quandary. Not here! Sherrilyn Kenyon successfully maneuvers around this dilemma. BAD TO THE BONE is cute, sexy, and adventitiously humorous; unfortunately, the ending is a bit much . . . corny!

            Book 2 -
Liz Carlyle: "Let's Talk About Sex." - Grade: A-
Sex is what people loved to talk about and radio talk host Dr. Delia Sydney successfully gave it to them. Yet, this mild-mannered, recently divorced college professor found herself trapped in a very ordinary lifestyle. Ordinary as in "hellish!" Her car was junk, she had "big-time" financial woes, and her ex-husband was a real jerk. Ok . . . Delia Sydney's life needed a little jumpstart and who better to "jump" than her neighbor - Sergeant Nick Woodruff?

Virile-looking, Nick Woodruff was uncomplicated and straightforward. His working, warrior type hands screamed manly and primitive! What a pleasing change from the stuffed shirts that normally surrounded Delia! Still, she was afraid. Once-bitten, twice shy kind of afraid! She was afraid she was going to get her heart broken.

Nick Woodruff wanted pleasure and satisfaction and Delia Sydney was a natural. She was special and he wanted her! Still, something else was happening! His feelings for the little psychology professor were becoming very serious. A deadly, scary type of serious! Could Delia Sydney be THE woman?

*** Comments: Having recently "re-discovered" Liz Carlyle, LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX is the reason I bought this anthology. And again, Ms. Carlyle did not disappoint me! LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX is fun, sexy as hell, and it has Sergeant Nick Woodruff! Despite the fact, the ending seemed rushed; Liz Carlyle still puts out a winner!

            Book 3 -
Nicole Camden: "The Nekkid Truth." - Grade: B-
Five years ago, a police patrol car knocked Debbie Valley to the pavement. The complication? The violent event left Debbie's brain traumatized and took away her ability to recognize human faces.
As a passenger in the patrol car, Detective Marshall Scott suffered lasting guilt. So, when they released Miss Debbie Valley from the hospital, the detective got Debbie her job. She was the departmental crime scene photographer.

For four long years, Debbie Valley lusted after Detective Marshall Scott. Then one night the man finally responded and Debbie's wait was extraordinarily answered. Detective Marshall Scott was one hot man!

*** Comments: Written in the first person, Nicole Camden's THE NEKKID TRUTH is definitely modish and unique. However, the sex flows too raw and too bawdy, causing the romance to break down.

4 out of 5 stars A sensual feast for readers.......2005-09-02

In Sherrilyn Kenyon's BAD TO THE BONE, high school teacher Marianne Webernec wins a publisher's contest and gets to act out her favorite romance novel for a month on an exclusive private island. Playing a femme fatale secret agent and acting out scenes with a gorgeous actor playing her favorite hero should have been a dream come true. Halfway through her stay, however, Marianne is bored silly and sneaks off into an off-limits part of the island. In the midst of blowing up sand castles to amuse himself while on a forced leave of advance, BAD (short for the Bureau of American Defense, a secret government agency) agent Kyle Foster spots and rescues a woman on the beach just as the explosives are about to go off. Instant attraction springs between Kyle and Marianne, but she is quickly whisked away by her contest sponsors. Determined to see her again, Kyle decides to add a wildcard (namely himself) into her scripted fantasy. Soon the two are on the run and falling in love -- but is it the real thing or just a product of their imagination?

Loving thy neighbor reaches new heights in Liz Carlyle's LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX. While her new talk show may be gathering momentum, Dr. Delia Sydney's real life is a shambles. Recently divorced, Delia has been left with a huge monstrosity of a house she can't afford, a barely working car, and -- after all her trees are cut down by the power company -- an unobstructed view of her maddeningly sexy neighbor's house. Nick Woodruff isn't looking to get involved, but he can't get the very sexy Delia out of his mind. He's hooked either listening to her dole out sexual advice on her radio program or watching her climb out of her car wearing what has to be the world's sexiest pair of heels. Determined to act like mature, horny adults, Nick and Delia decide to have a discreet, commitment-free, no holds barred, spanking optional sexual liaison. But when their hot, secret affair shows no signs of cooling off months later, a panicking Delia is set to do something that will change the stakes.

Nicole Camden's THE NEKKID TRUTH introduces us to a heroine with a very unusual condition. Years earlier, photographer Debbie Valley was struck by a patrol car and ended up in a weeks-long coma. When she awoke, Debbie no longer had the ability to recognize and remember faces, including her own. Today a successful photographer specializing in nudes, Debbie also continues to work for the San Diego police department on crime scenes -- a job originally arranged for her by the enigmatic Detective Marshall Scott, her nemesis and long the object of her desires. For years, Marshall has felt guilty for being unable to stop the accident that caused Debbie's injury. Standing aside as she dated his fellow officers, Marshall has long thought of her as off limits. That all changes when a new murder investigation forces them to work together and long suppressed feelings are finally released. As they hunt a murderer on the loose, it's up to Marshall to convince the woman he loves that her malady doesn't matter to him.

Passion in all its toe-curling, shiver-inducing diversity is explored in BIG GUNS OUT OF UNIFORM and the result is a sensual feast for readers. Sherrilyn Kenyon starts her new BAD series off with a bang (literally) with this fun frolic in the sun. Although not as emotionally satisfying as her longer titles, Ms. Kenyon's tale is full of the wacky humor and larger than life characters that have become her trademark. Meanwhile, historical author Liz Carlyle's first contemporary tale is a sizzling treat that should leave readers hot, bothered, and raring to go shoe shopping, while Nicole Camden makes a remarkable debut with a strong story featuring a truly unique heroine.

            1 out of 5 stars Coarse.......2005-02-05

I'm borrowing the word "coarse" from another reviewer's text because it is so apt. With the exception of the Liz Carlyle story, this is one tacky anthology. Even the Liz Carlyle story was not up to her usually high standard of storytelling. I bought this book because I was interested to read a Liz Carlyle contemporary. And, to be frank, her story wasn't that contemporary. Both characters were pretty old-fashioned and the setting seemed to be early 1960's.

Sherrilyn Kenyon's story did not keep my interest past the first chapter. I knew where it was headed and the setting of "sex camp" could have been funny if the lighter hand of a grownup had written it, but the writing for this was pre-pubescent.

I didn't make it past the first chapter of Nicole Camden's story either. The writing was leaden and the premise of a woman who could remember a guy's body parts but not his face was just plain silly, or a better word for it, would be - coarse.

5 out of 5 stars Totally worth the price.......2004-10-18

I would have to agree with one of the review that said that Sherrilyn Kenyon's "BAD to the Bone" was pretty terrible. I just couldn't get involved with the story it was so far fetched. In addition to which, neither of the characters were particularly engaging.

However, Nicole Camden's "The Nekkid Truth" was really interesting and unusual. I liked both of the characters in this story and really got the attraction between them.

The middle story, Liz Caryle's "Lets Talk About Sex", was good enough to sell the whole book to me. I adored Nick Woodruff, the absolutely ultimate charming and sincere hero. I wish this man was real and that he was mine! I can't say enough great things about him. Dr. Delia Sydney was also really great. They were completely wonderful together and the love scenes positively burned the pages; not, however, in an unnatural or forced way. As soon as I finished it I read it again, it was that good.

So, despite the bad beginning I LOVED this book. Totally worth the price.
