Circle Of Five.......2007-09-21
Mystery, Suspence, Romance, Comedy and Witches! OH MY!!
Without giving away too much in the book. It starts out in the prolouge by telling about the murder of a small boy. Then the group of women (the five) collaborate together to try and solve this murder mystery, which does get a little intense toward the end. These are women in the prime of their lives. They get together have tea or a dinner party, gossip, hold ceremonies/rituals together. Then the main character, Cassandra falls for a christian man. Do they get together? You'll have to read to book to find out!
This book held my attention throughout. It was really hard to put down. A great story line!
Has potential........2006-10-18
I'm Wiccan myself so I'm always on the lookout for entertaining books about witches. Circle of Five is the first in this series about a small coven of New England witches who perform magick and solve crimes at the same time. Cass, the narrator, is a middle-aged divorcee who has inherited her grandmother's cottage by the sea. The violence in the opening chapter was a little disconcerting because I didn't expect it, but the villain is effectively scary. The relationships between the five ladies are well drawn, although I don't know that I would like any of these women in real life because they're catty, nosy, and a little snarky with each other. Who needs enemies, etc? My main beef with the book is the formulaic romance. Why, why, oh WHY can female authors not resist throwing in the stupid romances??? It doesn't help that the `romance' between Cass and Joe is not very inspiring. They have sex the first time they're alone together, and he says things to Cass that she apparently thinks are incredibly romantic, but which I find incredibly creepy. I know the author is just trying to establish that this is some kind of mystical, instant connection, but it's a miserable failure in my opinion. There are two other `witch' mystery series' I'm aware of - Shirley Damsgaard's and Madelyn Alt's - and those are also formulaic mystery/romances, so I guess this is the trend. I don't know if I'll read the next in this series (Charmed Circle), but probably. I'd like to give it a chance because the writing is concise, flowing, and smooth.
Love this book!!!.......2006-08-13
I really enjoyed reading this book! Enough suspense to keep you hooked, waiting to see what happens. Great characters who keep you involved in the story line. I laughed out loud many times at the wit and banter. The Wicca and herbal info is accurate, but doesn't overwhelm the story. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series and hope there are plenty more in the future!
Magical new suspense series.......2004-06-23
I picked up this book based on a recommendation posted to a reading list, and boy, am I glad I did! Riccio's wonderful & wacky cast of characters eased into my heart as easily as a group of old friends, and the Wiccan aspect of the story integrated seamlessly into the plot itself. A masterful debut by an author I have since added to my "Buy or Die" list.
**Highly** recommended.
I'm now hooked!!.......2004-02-11
I have to say that this is the best new author I've read in some time. I enjoyed this book very much. The story was well put together while the personalities are all people that you can easily relate to. Most of us have at least one friend we can see in one of these people. She also does a beautiful job of handling the wicca element. I'm now on the second book of the series with the same characters. PLEASE, keep them coming.

Book Description
This book consists solely of the number pi, calculated to 5,000,000 decimal places. By far the biggest pi ever published in book form. It sprawls across 558 oversized pages, big as a city phonebook. Practical? Not really. Cool? Definitely. (For a smaller - but still pretty darn big - dose of pi, check out Pi to Two Million Places.)

Great fun.......2006-11-23
More than just a decoration for a coffee table, this book can be great fun and a source amusement for both individuals and social gatherings. Here are a few "party" ideas for using the book (use a good magnifying glass as the print is four point eyestrain):
1. Pick a page number, guess a long sequence of integers and then try to see if the sequence appears on that page.
2. Pick a page number, construct a sequence of say 300 digits, and check if that sequence "shadows" a 300-digit portion of the expansion on that page, i.e. is an approximation to that portion for a reasonable choice of metric.
3. Pick a time interval, say 60 seconds, and a page number and see who can memorize the longest portion of the expansion on that page number by viewing it for only that time interval.
4. Try to predict the expansion portion on page n using the expansion portion on page n - 1 (use Bayesian reasoning or some other methodology).
5. View each digit in the expansion as a time series, pick a portion of the expansion, and try and predict the next 100 terms of the time series.
6. Try to compose music based on the digits in a portion of the expansion.
7. See if you can find your phone number sequences in the expansion.
8. Try to find the longest sequence of repeating digits in the expansion. For example, can you find a portion with eight consecutive 9's?
9. Pick a few page numbers and find the digit that occurs the most often and least often on those pages. How many times does 123456789 appear on each page?
By the numbers..........2006-11-05
This book wasn't exactly bad, but it could have been much better. The story opens strong, a real page turner, but it becomes rather repetitive by the halfway mark, and the ending left me wanting more. Hopefully the sequel will be more well-rounded.

Best of the 15.......2002-05-09
This is the best book in a great series.
Very realistic. Presents both sides of the argument. Doesn't make any false promises that magick will fix every problem in your life or make it go away with a snap of the fingers--but does show that through magick and faith, good things can be accomplished. The girls face very realistic hurdles due to their Wiccan involvement.
Re: the prior review--I don't think all the difficulties came about solely due to the necklace. Kate had hidden her Wiccan involvement from her parents until this issue made them ask questions. Annie's family already knew and didn't care, but she had not told her boyfriend yet, then chose to come out Wiccan in the school paper. All these experiences are quite realistic and young Wiccans may have to deal with one or all of them at some point.
The best in the series!!.......2002-04-22
Definately the best book in the series. In this book, a ton of things happen. Kate finally reveals her involvement in Wicca to her parents, and the blow a fuse!! While she's telling this to her parents, Cooper's going through a rough spot too. She's suspended for coming to school wearing her necklace that has a pentacle on it. She takes the problem to the school board, but they tell her that she can't wear it. She gets a petition signed to get a revote, and with a little help from Sophia, she wins and is alloud to wear her pentacle. This book was definately the best in the series, and I've read them all. I would definately read this book! Not just this book, the whole series!!!!!!! They're the best!!!!!!!
Making a Mountain out of a Molehill.......2002-03-23
The Five Paths in the Circle of Three series is the one that deals with the controversy that arises from one of the three heroines - Cooper - wearing a pentagram symbol of her Wiccan religion. However, this does not go down well with her environment at school, and eventually her determination to wear a symbol of her religion leds her into serious trouble. This is a very important book in the series dealing with free-will, religious rights and personal expression, and thankfully the author gives a good account of BOTH sides of the arguement. As much as Wiccans hate it, the pentagram is also a symbol used by Satanists and people will continue to identify the pentagram with them. However, this book helps teach the ignorant that the importance is not the symbol itself, but what it means to the person who is wearing it.
Unfortunatly the entire premise is based on the possibility that wearing a pentagram symbol will led to outrage, violence, court-cases, newspaper articles and un-founded prejudice. I won't deny that there is prejudice against all religions in the world, but I found it hard to believe that all the negative events that occured in the book were simply because one high-schooler wore a pentagram necklace.
Colors of Another world........2001-12-23
After reading this far in the Circle of Three books I've seen the exampls of witchcraft and the effects they have on people. This book has opend the eyes of people including me. In the book Cooper decides to show her belifes freely by wearing her pentacle star which is one of the greatest symbols involved in the Craft. Most are very unconfortable when they see her star. Will Cooper have to give up the pentacle? Meanwhile Kate is haveing trouble telling her parents about her involvement in witchcraft. Will she lose all she's worked so hard for? Also Annie decides to express her belifes in witchcraft freely. Will
her decision bring her world crashing down on her?
I rated this book a five because even though these books are about the girls and their expieriences this one really opened my eyes. And I'd just like to say that Cooper, Kate, and Annie are right, most don't truley know what witchcraft is and what it stands for... it's completely harmless unless you don't know what you're doing. And I know that some wish to make sure their children aren't invovled with the Craft, and I respect that but sometimes the best way to "protect" something, is to set it free.
Pretty Factual and VERY well written.......2001-10-23
This book is about the contraversy of the pentagram and religious freedom and freedom of speech. This hit very close to home for me. I deal with this contraversy everyday and the book pointed out quite a few details about both sides of the story. It went into detail about the kind of things kids now deal with and the kind of persucution people like me face. So, it wasn't just fiction, it was fact. It's a must read!! It was by-far the best book written and I give it 5 stars.

Every evening at five o’clock, Christina and Rudy began the ritual commonly known as Happy Hour, sharing drinks along with a love of language and music (she is an author, he a composer, after all), a delight in intense conversation, a fascination with popes, and nearly thirty years of life together. Now, seven months after Rudy’s unexpected death, Christina reflects on their vibrant bond—with all its quirks, habits, and unguarded moments—as well as her passionate sorrow and her attempts to reposition herself and her new place in the very real world they shared.

Every evening at five o'clock, Christina and Rudy stopped work and began the ritual commonly known as Happy Hour. Rudy mixed Christina's drink with loving precision, the cavalier slosh of Bombay Sapphire over ice shards, before settling across from her in his Stickley chair with his glass of Scotch. They shared a love of language and music (she is an author, he a composer, after all), a delight in intense conversation, a fascination with popes, and nearly thirty years of life together.
What did I think, that we had forever? muses Christina, seven months after Rudy's unexpected death. While coming to terms with her loss, with the space that Rudy once inhabited, Christina reflects on their vibrant bond -- with all its quirks, habits, and unguarded moments -- as well as her passionate sorrow and her attempts to reposition herself and her new place in the very real world they shared.
In this literary jewel, a bittersweet novella of absence and presence and the mysterious gap between them, Gail Godwin has performed a small miracle. In essence, Evenings at Five is a grief sonata for solo instrument transposed into words.
Interwoven with meditations and movements, full of aching truths and a wicked sense of humor, it exquisitely captures the cyclical nature of commitment -- and the eternal quality of a romance completed.
"An unflinching account of love, loss, grief, and the struggle toward consolation. It should touch every reader with its emotional power."

Deeply profound........2005-10-25
I can't say much more about this book. This book is probably way over my head but the point of the story touches me deeply. I mean we all have to face our loved ones leaving this world without us and to be with someone for many years and then to have that empty space is a bit harsh.
However Christina does, it just takes time. She goes over everything she can remember and I think she is feels a bit guilty about leaving him on the night he went, but perhaps it was better this way. I am not sure what way I would want it.
Great book, great author. Have plans to check out her other books. But pick up this book! It is a quick read, but really means a whole lot.
A Beatiful Tribue to Love.......2004-12-21
Gail Godwin, one of my all-time favorite authors, lost her long-time companion, composer Robert Starer, before writing this book as a tribute to him and their relationship. It is, in a word: Perfect.
For anyone who has ever felt unbearable grief, or for anyone who has felt the same measure of real love, this book is a tribute to the best of the human spirit. I was lucky enough to have listened to the Audio version, which is read by the author herself, and her lightly southern-tinged pleasant voice adds a measure of poignancy she may or may not have intended.
The fictional characters, Rudi and Christine, an author and a composer, live a life rich in every way, from their afternoon cocktail hour (preceded by a phone call from "Cope Paul," Rudi's fictional pontiff who urges them to have a drink) to their wide and wonderful collection of shared jokes, memories, people and most of all words...rich tapestries of words. Rudi is multi-lingual, and Christine is her willing foil.
It sounds like it was the perfect relationship we all want and need, and its loss it made all the more so by the way Christine's reaction to her unspeakable loss.
A truly beautiful book; I only wish I had seen the drawings that accompany the text, and will make sure I buy the book as well as the recording.
Gail Godwin writes with comforting precision........2004-10-18
I love Gail Godwin's clean, specific prose, and her thinly disguised (according to what I've read elsewhere) story of loss touched me. Her literate examination of (always imperfect) love is a joy, and I was surprised by how much I also embraced the collection of "Christina" stories in the latter half of this collection.
maybe too young to fully appreciate.......2004-05-24
First off, the drawings reminded me strongly of the illustrator of the "Al" children's books. Since I loved those books, I was already well disposed toward "Evenings at Five." But this book though it expressed the stages of grief beautifully just did not go deep enough. I may have been spoiled by Godwin's previous books which are meaty and filled to bursting with provocative ideas and fascinating characters. Perhaps if I were reading it through the lens of grieving, I would have come away more impressed.
MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW.......2004-04-27
As I began this read I was intriqued by the two characters that were being presented to me. Two artists, one gifted with music and one gifted with words, merging together as one. Within the creases of the words that I read, I could feel the unity and the respect these two souls had one for another.
As I continued on, I could feel the absence as the one soul is taken on to their eternal destiny leaving the other to exist alone, or is she?
"Evenings At Five" is a look at continuing love after death. It is the heart of a soul that clings to not just the memory but the lingering essence of a love that will never die.
It is a reminder to cherish the moments we have with those we love and to know within ourselves that despite the physical absence the joining of hearts can never be separated. A deep meaningful read, well worth your time.

Very good, loses steam in the sequel.......2007-06-07
Good characters and easy to follow. The pace was consistent and it felt like the author not only knew how to tell a story to keep the reader engaged, but she also knew what would be interesting and relevant while keeping tight hold of the plot and scenes.
Things seemed to fall apart in the second book in that two fairly built up events occurred and were over in less than a page. I thought I had somehow lost my place and missed some huge confrontational scenes, but no, one turned out to be a non-event and the other - the death of a character- apparently didn't need much description.
The sequel was less tightly woven together, the author jumped from plot to plot too quickly and there were lots of songs/poems that I found irritating. But it's a personal preference, I don't really like world building and spending ages on giving tress new and random names or trying to make a big Tolkein type history just so the author can prove that they can.
I still recommend the books, they were good, but too bad the second was not as good as the first.
I was so impressed .......2007-05-30
I bought this book based on the many positvie reviews I read, but beyond the back cover description I had no idea what to expect. So I was really thrilled by what I discovered.
What you get in this book:
I sprawling indepth fantasy, full of intrigue, politics magic and numerous fantastical creatures. a Strong determined female lead(I really enjoy Luna Books for this reason) a little romance, and truely amazing scenes.
The richness and quality of the story are far removed from the everyday, you can't help but feel transported, the reality of the tale is that complete. I really can't do it justice in words, but if you love stories where the human world and the magial world colide, with a strong taste of Celtic Paganism(which I love) Then this is your book, I've been impressed with every Luna publiaction I've read, but Silver's Edge is truely a find.
So you don't repeat my mistake Silv's Edge is the SECOND BOOK in a trilogy, it goes like this:
Silvers Lure(prequel)
Silver's Edge
Silver's Bane
I found out about Silver's Lure after I read the other two, but thankfully you don't have to read it to understand 2 or 3
Great Story..........2007-04-12
Saw this book and it grabbed my attention. Ms. Kelleher is a wonderful story teller and takes you to several different worlds that enhabit the same earth. Through use of Celtic and Pagen imagery, you are transported to a world of magick and wonder. Are the Sidhe good or bad? What turmoil will happen with the humans next? Will Nessa find her mother? Will the Goblins win? Got through this book and had to get the sequal, almost through it and already ready for the third one! If you get involved with this series, you will not be disappointed.
An excellent beginning.......2007-04-05
I enjoyed this book so much ~ the characters, storyline, etc. When I finished I couldn't wait to read the rest in the series. If you like fantasy with strong women read this book.
my review...........2006-05-10
I have unfortunately bought most of the Luna books before I read any of them. As they are put out by Harlequin I was expecting a romance with fantasy elements.
Be forewarned that these books are much more fantasy than romance. Meaning that you will find situations not present in most romances. Extreme violence and infidelity in main characters being most obvious.
The romance that is present in these stories is not your typical "happily ever after" fare, and most present themselves in a fairly morally ambiguous way. This is also not a book devoted to one hero and heroine, but three, and the jumping back and forth tends to get confusing.
While none of that should be a "book killer" I did want to let other romance fans know this ahead of time as this may not be a book you'd be interested in. If your looking for a lighthearted romantic book, this is not it. This book will appeal more to a epic fantasy reader.

Simple & Functional.......2007-08-08
The NKJV is based on the textus receptus, readable, trustworthy, faithful to the original text, similar in poetic cadence to the KJV, and very suitable for memorization and ministering. If you want a modern version cleaner for sharing with this generation than the KJV, the NKJV is the way to go.
For old schoolers the layout of this Bible is very pleasing: Red Letter, dark font on both black letters and red, center column cross references, decent size print, compact, with book introductions, and a small-servicable concordance.
The maps leave a lot to be desired and after owning 10 of these I note that after about 3 years the bindings crack at the point where the maps start. This is not such a terrible thing for any book that gets used daily and is transported in all weather conditions outside the home.
I am ordering two more now to have one on file for replacement in a few years. The NKJV market in large print and format of this type is rare and becoming even harder to replace. Broadman and Holman still offer it, but Thomas Nelson pretty much own the rights, so I dont know how much longer this version will be available.
My only suggestion would be that BH manufacture an uber version of this text: Like the Thomas Nelson Signature Series Bibles; fine leather and uprgaded paper. I would definitely buy that Bible. Unfortunately for true Bible lovers, the NKJV does not appear to being treated very well by its translation stewards right now. Why NKJV stewards insist on following the ultra small print trend in Bibles is beyond me. Profits on all Bibles appears to have replaced the old conviction that providing the word of God to God's people is a sacred trust.
High quality, but the print is only 10 point.......2007-06-02
While it costs more than twice as much as the inexpensive imitation leather Nelson Bibles, the quality in this Bible is quite evident. The leather cover is the real deal, and the maps are lovely. This bible is gift quality. The print however is not that big, it is only 10 point. This is a nice Bible for the money.
Satisfied Customer.......2007-05-14
I am very happy I purchased this Bible. The quality is wonderful, it is light, thin and the large print is a relief. I am a Bible teacher and will use this Bible when I travel to teaching engagements because it is easy to carry, easy to read and a red letter edition. Thanks Amazon, this was a great purchase!
Poor Binding.......2006-07-27
This is a pretty good Bible--I mean the format and size are very nice to have. It's a great "preaching" Bible... but there are a couple problems. The first BIG problem is the binding. Even if you buy the leather version you will have problems with the binding in the same places every time (I've bought 3 of these on different occasions and have experienced the same problems with every one). The second problem is the lack of space for writers like myself--this I consider a smaller problem since it's designed that way. However, I do not think the design of the binding meant for it to be so fragile.
Best NKJV Print on Genuine Leather.......2006-04-24
I have found that this is the best NKJV print on genuine leather that I have found. The following are the reasons:
1. This is a large-print edition. It is smaller than "giant-print" but makes reading much more comfortable. It helps a lot when used for preaching as I do not need to strain to read the words.
2. This is a ultrathin edition. It is much easier to slip this bible into a bag and does not take up that much space in width.
3. It is a genuine leather binding. I have had many different bindings for bibles but I have found this the best. Bonded leather bindings tends to split at the spine and other places after awhile, and it would give way after much use. The genuine leather does not split as easily and is much more hardy. The hardcovers are a little inflexible while carrying to preach or to read, and is not able to open as wide as a soft binding.
4. This is a NKJV translation. Every edition, translation and paraphrase of the bible has its pros and cons. Comparatively, NKJV is well balanced between readability and accuracy.
5. The leather color is black. This may be a personal perference, but black does not dirty easily.
Hence, I recommend this as one of the best bibles to travel with and preach from.
