Book Description
In the 1780s, unrest ruled the Carolinas. Settlers were arriving to clear forest glades and ridges as the Cherokees withdrew; British forces were pillaging as the patriots mustered for battle. Robert Morgan's stunning new novel tells a story of two young people caught in the chaos and war raging in the wilderness.
Only sixteen years old, Josie Summers murders her abusive stepfather and, wearing his clothes to disguise herself as a man, flees the family farm. Almost immediately lost in the snowy woods, she accepts a young Methodist preacher's invitation to assist in his itinerant ministry. When Joseph's true identity is revealed, the Reverend John Trethman is racked with guilt at having shared his home with a young woman and then falling in love with her. His solution is to marry Josie, performing as both minister and bridegroom. Not long after their wedding, John is kidnapped by British soldiers and forced to minister to their wounded and bury their dead. Josie again disguises herself as a man and joins the North Carolina militia to avoid being taken for a spy. On January 17, 1781, in a wooded pasture called the Cowpens, Josie is gravely wounded in the patriots' victorious battle and despairs of ever seeing John again. Robert Morgan's description of the battle of Cowpens is as vivid and intense as any in Revolutionary War literature.
Brave Enemies is a story of romance and enduring love, of the struggle to build a homeland as one era is dying and another age of freedom and discovery is being born.

Brave Enemies-Morgan.......2006-08-28
This was one of the worst novels that I have wasted time and money on--would that I could have both back. Oddly enough the female character, Josie, is done well. The male character, John, is nothing but cardboard. This could have been well done-shallow and unbelievable!
I really wanted to like this book but..........2004-07-15
It was tedious. I was hoping that the story would get interesting at some point, there might be some sort of passion or driving force but the characters just got swept along. There was nothing to make me care about any of the characters; they were all generic, taken from "central casting". The book was violent and ugly without a strong moral center. It was truly a struggle to finish.
GRITTY, REALISTIC, POWERFUL.......2004-06-28
Comparisons to COLD MOUNTAIN are in order. BRAVE ENEMIES, too, is a love story set during the brutality and misfortune of a civil war. Here it is the American Revolutionary War with patriots and loyalists hanging each other and burning down each other's homes as well as the militia and redcoats doing battle. But while CM is burdened and slowed by literary pretensions, BRAVE ENEMIES is a fast-moving and entertaining tale, without heavy-handed symbolism or repeated flashbacks, of sixteen year old Josie Summers and John Trethman, a young itinerant Methodist minister, who fall in love and then are separated by the war. Being a history buff, I liked the realistic feel of the novel. The descriptions of the time and place, the clothes, food, weapons, homes, all seemed well-researched. And the battle of Cowpens was presented brilliantly. I feel like I was there. My only complaint is that the description of John's religious services went on too long in a couple places but that is a minor quibble. This is a gritty, realistic book, well-written, full of action and with a couple powerful sex scenes from the woman's point of view. Robert Morgan scores a double with BRAVE ENEMIES in that this is a novel I think both men and women will enjoy. Five cannonballs out of five.
Tedious and repetitive.......2004-05-20
While the author is obviously a competent writer and excels at description, he is overly reptitious. The pacing was slow and tedious, which did litle to create tension or anticipation. The only thing I anticipated was the end of the book. The characters seemed one dimensional. I never felt like I knew them or particularly cared about them. Whereas we are subjected to lengthy observations of the settings, we are seldom exposed to the emotions and feelings of the characters. We are told that John falls in love with Josie, but nothing other than proximity even hints at the reason why. I didn't like Cold Mountain either but will admit that it was technically well written, as is this book.
visceral and eloquent.......2004-01-19
Set in the backwoods Carolinas in 1781, this brutal, tumultuous story centers on the narrator, 16-year-old Josie Summers, who murders her rapist stepfather and flees in men's clothing. Rescued (as Joseph) by an evangelical, itinerant preacher who's aghast when he discovers her deception, but then secretly performs a marriage ceremony, Josie embraces religion and love.
But calamity is never far away in the war-torn colonies as roving bands of redcoats vie with vigilante patriots in cruelty towards their enemies. When the preacher, John, is seized by the British and his cabin burned, Josie flees again and - still dressed as a man - joins the North Carolina militia, where (as we know from the prologue) she is wounded and her disguise revealed.
The story's near-constant fever pitch of danger and desperation is disrupted from time to time by a switch to John's point of view, and a man tormented by his own human frailties is not nearly as interesting as a girl marching to war in the freezing mud without boots, or even shoes.
Josie's period-perfect voice and the eloquent immediacy of Morgan's ("Gap Creek," "This Rock") descriptive prose keep the reader immersed in a world of hurt and hardship. The battlefield scenes are a riveting mess of confusion, blood, terror and bewilderment, and the love scenes are transporting. A visceral story, elegantly told.

LOS ANGELES TIMES
Morgan Gower works at Cullen's hardware store in north Baltimore. Interesting, but confusing.......2006-10-04
Having read a half dozen, I have mixed feelings about Tyler's books. Part of me admires and enjoys the way she can write engrossing sagas about ordinary people not necessarily doing much of anything. The other part is left feeling exhausted, like I just lived through someone else's entire life for them...and not quite sure if I got it.
Essentially, Morgan's Passing follows the story of Morgan Gower, a middle-aged man who becomes infatuated with a young couple after assisting in the emergency birth of their daughter. Gower - a married man with seven daughters - dreams of living Emily and Leon's frugal life, just as he's taken on the "roles" of many other persona in the past. As time passes, he also become obsessed with Emily, who begins to represent everything that he believes his own wife isn't, and everything he would want. Eventually, of course, Gower learns that people are just people, and not always what we think - or want - them to be. It just might be too late when that realization occurs.
Morgan's Passing.......2006-08-27
If you live in a city without English in its bookstores, what do you read? Well, odds are you encounter a Westerner from time to time and exchange books you've read for books you haven't. You never know what you'll wind up with. It's Book Crossing, taken to a much higher level.
And so it was that I found myself looking at a battered copy of MORGAN'S PASSING, with no memory of who gave it to me or what book(s) I gave up in return. Pages brown and falling out, cover falling off, blurbs that make it sound like something I didn't want to read. But, a desperate junkie in need of my reading fix, I gave it a shot.
And, at last, the review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story of how I obtained it is much like the character of Morgan himself. He just kind of appears -- you don't know why -- but you're glad you met the memorable eccentric. This book is witty, original, and well worth reading. Ignore the [...] on the cover about "the love story." The book has one, but it's incidental. Some marketing bozo didn't know how to describe true creativity.
Okay, time to go broke ordering more Anne Tyler books from Amazon. All the way from China. There's even a Putlizer Prize winner in there.
slow but good.......2006-04-08
I just finished another Anne Tyler book that was written earlier in her career. Once again I feel like I've lived with another group of people/characters for the few weeks that it took to read this story. It was a slow read. I wished the first three quarters of this book flowed with the same dramatic intensity that the last quarter did. I didn't fully understand lead character Morgan until then. But maybe that's the point. Once the plot twisted, the characters seemed to come into view more. All in all I enjoyed it and recommend it for Tyler fans.
Not Tyler's better works.......2006-02-16
Has this been any other author, I would have stopped reading after the first few chapters. But as is sometimes the case with her earlier works, I kept reading on in hopes that the book would get better - it didn't.
After I got through enough of the book (having only about 100 page left to read), I just had to skip to the end to get the experience over with.
As another reviewer worded, this was quite one-dimensional and the characters were a bit disturbing, but not in the good sense, and the story just dragged on for far too long.
I grew annoyed having put so much time into reading this and it was quite the let down. Tyler's later works are much better and if you want to get of those books, you'd be better off.
I don't recommend this book at all.
Ineffably Disinteresting.......2006-01-22
I read this book as part of a book discussion group I had joined and it was so wretchedly lackluster it proved to be the death knell of me ever going back to the group. This book was half-baked, boring, and grievously devoid of even the tiniest bit of interest. I can't even give it credit for having any sort of vocabulary beyond the comprehension of an average twelve year old. The characters were so flat that I didn't even finish it. Later I heard from the other book discussion members even the title was a let down as Morgan never actually passed away (`twould have been a fitting end though - much like converting a testy horse into glue, something of actual use.) I've never read any of Anne Tyler's books but after this little gem I doubt I'll ever pick up another.

Kinda boring.......2007-02-01
Having read Whiteside's anthology with Angela Knight,Captive Dreams, i thought this book would be hot and exciting. While the sex scenes were hot enough, the rest of the story really kinda bored me. It was an ok read but not what i was expecting.
More a snooze-fest than erotic fireworks.......2006-11-04
I admit I was slightly bored by this book. The characters simply came never alive to me, least of all William Donovan. He's supposed to be Catholic, goes to mass and dreams of marrying a good Catholic girl, hoping to breed babies with her. Yet he carries a bag of dildos across an ocean and once attended a sex school, visit prostitutes regularly and simply knows no taboos in the bed room. He's attracted to Viola because he thinks her a real fairy tale princess, his own personal delicate faerie queen. And what does he do when he first is alone with his newly acquired mistress Viola, his unattainable romantic dream for years? He crudely and graphically demands oral sex from her in exact the same manner than a pimp would require such a job from his favorite soiled dove. Despite her initial reluctance and visible ignorance he coerces her with orders and demands to do the full job. She of course enjoys William's domineering and crude manner and the rather one-sided pleasure though she was gently raised in the 19th century and hardly knows the man (if that had occurred later in the book I would have enjoyed the scene but at that point it seemed hardly the appropriate manner in which to approach a rather inexperienced woman like Viola). After her husband took so selfishly his pleasure without considering hers one would think that this kind of thing would put Viola off since it again is a one-sided affair for her (as if she already hadn't enough of this kind of experience). But no, this is erotic romance where a disappointed reaction is very unlikely to occur. And William who uses a gently bred woman like that thinks he's not good enough to marry her. Hello? Can anyone explain that to me? I could have accepted a harsh and demanding task master (after all I didn't really expect a Mary Balogh hero here) like William but his gentler notions just puzzled me beyond words for they simply didn't fit in with the rest of his behavior. He was such a conundrum to me, I couldn't make head or tail of him.
Viola on the other hand is slightly better characterized. She's a sexual being, not some unawakened fairy queen. Despite her unsatisfactory first marriage, she has dreams and wants a lover for her own fulfillment. Though she was so conveniently submissive in her relationship with Donovan at the beginning that I thought the book was targeted for the wrong audience (Viola felt more something a man would conjure up in his wet dreams) I felt she developped a mind of her own later in the book. She started to initiate some of the erotic encounters and is not only means to fulfill Donovan's own slightly kinky fantasies (I find spanking a grown-up woman and using dildos in places where I think no dildo belongs anti-climatic but many readers might like exactly this which is why I mention it here), she also has fantasies of her own which he helped to come true.
I really liked that which is the sole reason why I give this book three stars instead of only two. But I think it takes more than a woman who learns to pursue her own dreams in the course of a book and a lot of kink to add up to an emotionally satisfactory erotic romance. I simply missed genuine passion and good old romantic love (but this I do usually miss in other erotic romances as well). There was hardly any genuine tenderness and any profound interest in each other visible outside the bedroom. Whiteside at least hinted at this (which is already more than what other erotic romance authors do). It might be too difficult to heighten the steam in the genre and not sacrifice emotional depth in the process so I might be demanding too much. Maybe this is simply not the genre for me.
I hope you enjoy it more than I did. I think most lovers of Romantica won't be disappointed.
*I LOVE THE DEVIL*.......2006-09-18
This was a fabulous book! So emotional and touching! I loved the main characters, William and "Mrs. Ross"! I highly recommend this book! Very erotic, lots of great sex and vulnaribility! I hope this helps, 5 STARS FOR SURE!
SENSATIONAL! A stunningly sizzling historical.......2006-08-22
Ms. Whiteside has done it again! With her exceptional talent and her flair for erotic and historical, she has combined both to bring a fabulous tale. Not a family member or a friend but a professional reviewer, I find this story has all the elements you want in a historical romance. Adventure, intrigue and of course hot steamy sex. This is a highly entertaining tale that you will not want to put down. KUDO'S TO YOU MS. Whiteside for another wonderful read.
A sizzling, sexy, erotic romance.......2006-03-09
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Whiteside and it won't be the last. She has quite a gift for writing erotica; this is one of the hottest books I have ever read. I think sometimes with these kind of novels the characters seem kind of wooden and the lovemaking scenes mechanical. Some of the Thea Devine and Susan Johnson novels left me feeling that way, but not so the characters in this book, especially William. Viola could have had a little more depth, but I felt both of the characters way of relating to each other very warm, loving, passionate, funny and altogether entertaining. From their first meeting, I could feel the chemistry between the pair and I not only liked them but I was drawn into their story and cared what happened to them. That doesn't always happen when reading a romantic novel, let alone an erotic romance. A word of warning - this book contains explicit sex scenes; if you don't like reading such encounters in a novel, you won't like this book. I enjoyed it and thought it a highly entertaining read. Its nice to try a book by an author you haven't read before and be as pleasantly suprised as I was with "The Irish Devil".

tender touch.......2006-04-06
I've read several of Graham's books, Devil's Mistress is definitely a good book. If you're the type of person who skims the books for the steamy passionate scenes, this book is not for you. The plot, though slightly predictable, is well worth reading the book through, and the end is definitely rewarding and odd, because you always think of your heroine's living forever in your mind, at least I do. Devil's Mistress is an awesome book, I also recommend A Pirate's Pleasure, also by Ms. Graham, and would strongly suggest that people not invest the money in Savage Sweet Eden.

Wonderful pirate book.......2004-12-10
This is the 1st pirate book I've read, and I thought it was very
good. I found some things a little too convenient, such as
ailing spouses, but aside from that, I really liked the book &
did not want it to end. It did have a happy ending, and I
didn't sob like a baby when it was finished, like I thought I
might.
Okay.......2002-12-15
I have read better books by Heather Graham. The book was a bit drawn out could have been cut down by at least three chapters. The heroin pretty much worked my nerves. At times she was very naive. The book also became a little boring halfway through but all in all it was okay. I do suggest reading "A Pirates Pleasure" a very good book.
How non-formula of you, Ms. Graham!.......2000-01-26
Devil's Mistress is unlike any Historical Romance I have read in that it does not follow the standard formula for this type of novel. The book begins with a Prologue that lends an eeriness that makes the reader eager to get into the guts of the book. The book begins with a witch burning, a witch hunt and the hero and heroine meeting. Then the hero turns out to be married. Then the heroine gets married to someone else. This is what I mean about the book not following standard formula. You have to continue reading to see if and how the two could possibly get back together. The writing allowed me to feel the hysteria that permeated Salem in the late 1600s as the witch hunts began. The love story is poignant and understandable.
For me, the unusual way in which this book was presented makes it one of Ms. Graham's finest.
Fun and exciting romance with good historical context.......1999-03-18
I REALLY enjoyed this book. The plot centers around the witch trials both of England and Salem. The heroine (unfortunately) falls victim to both and must be saved by the hero, Sloan, twice. The book gets off to a quick and exciting start-the first hundred-fifty pages are fabulous. The protagonists (whose names I don't remember) get together, have a few near misses with death, then hit it off nicely. Unfortunately, it slumps a bit after that with a very, very lengthy discription of their enforced separation. The action and romance both pick up again in the end, so I guess all's well that ends well.
All told, this book provided me with several extremly diverting hours, so, if that is all you are looking for, I suggest you read it as well.

"Let them blow me up with my treasures.Let my treasures-along with bits and pieces of my bones-rain down on Bavaria like hail st.......2006-03-29
As one reads this book ,it is imperative that you keep in mind it is a total work of fiction in its details. There is no doubt that Hitler was one of the worst examples of human garbage of the 20th.Century. There were several others just as bad in the Century,a continual stream of similar despots throughout history;and we are seeing that there are still new ones in the 21st Century. This book attempts to look into the mind of Hitler, albeit through the eyes of Eva. The more one reads about the leaders and followers of the National Socialist Nazi regime, the more one sees how evil it was. The fact that good people can ever come to terms with themselves for ever allowing such evil to exist, shows that there is the hope that Good will always succeed over Evil, given time and perservance; but oh, at what a price. One has to remember, no matter how hard one tries, there is never going to be any case made for good coming out of the evil that was generated by Hitler. It has always been the nature of Evil to be able to find its believers ,apologists and even appeasers.
Be it Stalin and his communists, Tojo and his Japanese Empire,Mao and his followers,a small group like Charles Manson and his followers or bin Laden and his followers, supporters and apologists ;they can only succeed as long as men of good will let them.
Try as you may to find some redeeming value in these people;the only good that can come from them is their total destruction.History has shown that the sooner it is nipped in the bud,the better.
As one reads this book ,it is not even possible to harbour hate for them; they are not worthy of that;hate is their coin of the realm.
Is this book worth reading? I think so;if only to remind us of the nature of Evil.
Horribly biased, unimaginative, boring..........2004-05-08
I picked this up because it was in the autobiography/biography section in my library, causing me to believe that it was actual nonfiction, based entirely on factual evidence. A cursory reading quickly led me to believe this could ONLY be fiction. the Eva Braun depicted is such a horrible, slightly deranged, immature, racist, (add more bad things) person, that it gets to the point where it's just not believable anymore.
If you want to read a completely biased fictional biography, read this, but otherwise, if you're the slightly bit objective, i suggest you pick up something else.
14 year old boy.......2002-07-24
This book for my age was disgusting . All mostly this book was about parties , traveling and sex . My mom was not thrilled about the parts with the sex . But , overall this book was stupid . If I were you don't read it , its sick and boring . I gave it three stars because it was just ok . Plus , I recommend that you be over 21 y/o or close . I only got this because I was on a holocaust site and had info on her and I was interested .
PREJUDICE.......2002-01-28
BY CALLING EVA BRAUN SELFISH, TYRANNICAL , RACIST, NARCISSIST AND CRUEL , THE AUTHOR HAD SIMPLE SPEW HER OWN RACIST VENOM AND HAD DONE GREAT INJUSTICE TO HISTORY.
Vaguely interesting.......2001-08-28
As a historian I feel I have something to say about this. It's not as poor a depiction of Eva as some have said. Granted, this is a boring book and I certainly would not recommend it, unless like me, you are fascinated with all details of the horrors of the Nazis and their associates. Gold is not wrong to assume Hitler's abnormality sexually-there is plenty of real evidence to support this, so I would not make the conclusion that she is "sensationalizing". Very rarely, as any psychologist will tell you, does an individual so twisted as Hitler have a normal sexual life, because sexuality reflects a normal, loving relationship and everyone who saw Hitler and Eva together commented that he insulted her in his presence and treated her as one would a loyal dog. That means there would be a problem. Also, this is a work of fiction, so this woman needn't justify herself, although I thought she was in line with Eva's own entries. Why is everyone so quick to defend Eva? Why is it more palatable for some to assume she was not shallow? Presumably she was far less bizarre than her lover/husband, but no innocent woman could have had a relationship with such a man. By the way, who was that guy who claimed Eva and Hitler escaped in a sub?! That was hilarious! Doesn't anyone screen these reviews?

"She's hell in the saddle,isn't she?".......2006-07-20
The review before does a real good job of telling what this tale is all about ;so I won't repeat. This is the second book of Peter Brandvold's that I've read ;and I found it just as good as the first; "The Devil Gets His Due".See my review of July 15,2006. Louisa Bonaventure played a big part in it,but it was actually in this book that Lou Prophet first came across this little Hellcat,Vengence Queen,or as she is called in this case "Devil's Mistress". Although I probably should have read this book first,it really doesn't matter a whole lot as both tales can stand alone.
Again,I like my westerns to stick with being a western and not drift into being a mystery. With this yarn,Brandvold lets us know exactly who the bad guys are and sets about writing a true western, and stays focused on the pursuit. He gives us lots of interesting experiences along the way.We get introduced to several Old West characters and towns ;and in such well written detail that we almost feel as if we were there. In my books, that is what a western should do.
Peter's writing holds your interest, and it is difficult to put his book down, once you get started.
Take this for example;
"Climb up on that horse and put your head through that noose."
"I...I ain't climbin' up on no horse...and I ain't stickin'
my neck through no noose,Little Miss."
"You'll die now,then."
"Wait a minute now.You don't wanna do this."
"I'm going to give you to the count of three, then I'm
going to sink one forty-five caliber slug through your lung
and leave you to choke to death in your own blood."
"And if you call out to your friend, again reading his mind,
the last word will not have died from your lips before I've
killed you deader than a widow's husband."
"Well, what good's it gonna do me to get up on that horse?
You're gonna kill me one way or another!"
"It will give you several more precious seconds to breathe
the air and reflect on your life. Maybe even a minute or
two. We humans do cling to life so,when the chips are down.
Seconds can feel like hours."
"It's your choice. You can die slowly now, choking on your
own bodily fluids,or you can have the few extra minutes it
takes you to climb into the saddle and tighten the noose
around your neck."
"I'm going to start counting now." ....
And the tale continues....
In my books, westerns don't get much better than that.
A MUST READ WESTERN.......2003-06-04
Lou Prophet rides in to Luther Falls with the bodies of two outlaws drapped across their saddles. Then he finds out he has to wait a week to collect the bounty from Wyatte Earp for the two hombres Wyatte sent him after. One day Lou is relaxing in a saloon when gun shots erupt in the normally quiet town. When the gun smoke has cleared, a hold up has taken place, two citizens & the sheriff have been gunned down and a girl is kidnapped. The result is Prophet's relaxed wait in Luther Falls is over as he is the only one available to go after the gang and bring the girl back. While in the town of Campbell, Lou finds an unlikely ally in Louisa Bonaventure. Louisa's family was murdered by the same Red River Gang in Nebraska Territory and has been on their trail for a year. In that time Louisa has dispatched several gang members. What bothers Lou about his new "partner" is the fact she is only seventeen. RIDING WITH THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS is another MUST READ from Peter Brandvold and a refreshing western set in the Dakota Territory.
