Book Description

Following the best-selling triumph of Kafka on the Shore—“daringly original,” wrote Steven Moore in The Washington Post Book World, “and compulsively readable”—comes a collection that generously expresses Murakami’s mastery. From the surreal to the mundane, these stories exhibit his ability to transform the full range of human experience in ways that are instructive, surprising, and relentlessly entertaining. As Richard Eder has written in the Los Angeles Times Book Review, “He addresses the fantastic and the natural, each with the same mix of gravity and lightness.”

Here are animated crows, a criminal monkey, and an iceman, as well as the dreams that shape us and the things we might wish for. Whether during a chance reunion in Italy, a romantic exile in Greece, a holiday in Hawaii, or in the grip of everyday life, Murakami’s characters confront grievous loss, or sexuality, or the glow of a firefly, or the impossible distances between those who ought to be the closest of all.

“While anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream,” Laura Miller wrote in The New York Times Book Review, “it’s the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves”—a feat performed anew twenty-four times in this career-spanning book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Twenty-four delightful short stories.......2007-09-03

This collection of short stories features quite a range of memorable characters and situations. Blind willows have a lot of pollen and tiny flies covered with it crawl inside the ear of a woman and put her asleep. A waitress about to spend her twentieth birthday in a surprising manner. A man who has the astonishing habit of going to the zoo whenever there is a typhoon. The story of a mirror capable of reflecting another self. The strange story of a disabled son and her mother holidaying on an island.
In many of these stories, narrative tension is heightened by a refusal to explain strange events; Murakami's ghosts and mysteries remain what they are. In "Nausea 1979" for example, the reader will never know whether a serial adulterer has been cursed, or whether his nausea has something to do with his predilection for deceptive seduction. Murakami never gives answers to the reader's questions, and the result is memorable if puzzling at times.
The stories in this collection have all of Murakami's characteristic strangeness, but they combine the bizarre with a tight structure. They show the author at his best; not as a cult literary figure but as a really first-rate writer of short fiction. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Is this from the same guy who gave us Wind-up Bird Chronicle?.......2007-08-10

I have given up on "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman." I am half way through and I believe it's not worth any more of my time.

Let me tell you how bad it was. I took the book with me in a visit to Toronto earlier this week. I was bored out of mind at the Pearson Airport waiting for my flight. So I pulled out the book, thinking I could probably sail through the wait engrossed in Haruki Murakami's stories. After about 10 minutes, I put the book back in my carry-on thinking it is much more preferable to get bored out of mind than reading this junk.

What on earth was Murakami thinking? Do authors become so arrogant that after some fame, the readers will lap up any crap they dish out? Frankly, I am disgusted. I am not going to read another Murakami unless the reviews are really really good.

5 out of 5 stars Uneven but great nevertheless.......2007-07-30

This collection of short stories contains some of Murakami best work. That there are stories from his past that were probably best left interred hardly mars the genius of this collection. A few stories, like "Poor Aunt", are laced with absurdity lacking profundity, like the silliness of a Japanese cartoon character. Yet I have to admire the author's audacity and admit that some of the charm of Murakami comes from the cultural disconnect between Western and Eastern sensibility.

What I don't want to read is Murakami mouthing words that could be more authentically articulated by Western authors. In this book Murakami remains true.

3 out of 5 stars Highly readable, moderately obnoxious........2007-06-07

Haruki Murakami excels at perceiving the minor details that give any particular location its unique character; his cynical observations and dry sense of humor are often very enjoyable. Many of his stories take very mundane aspects of the modern world and skillfully turn them on their head. And he obviously loves writing about food -- its tactile qualities are perfectly suited to his style.

Unfortunately, Murakami also suffers from a malady that I have encountered from more than one Japanese writer. Oftentimes these same observations serve the purpose of an elliptical or anemic plot. The narrator is smug, condescending, and a little whiney. Along with the essential details come laundry lists of less-than-pertinent observations.

Murakami can pen a beautiful sentence such as "Tracks without trains passing over them have a mysterious silence all their own." Yet, he also writes world-class groaners: "The earth turned on its axis while the moon imperceptibly shifted the force of gravity and turned the tides." Or about an ear: "It was on the small side, but the earlobe was all puffy, like a freshly baked Madeleine."

I call him "Abe light".

5 out of 5 stars bits of memories like gems wrapped in velvet.......2007-05-06

Being that Murakami Haruki's latest novel will be released to his English reading audience next week, I decided to get back into a Murakami mood by reading his most recent short story collection: Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. Years ago I read Murakami's first short story collection, The Elephant Vanishes, and some of the stories, such as T.V. People and The Dancing Dwarf left me quite cold, but others such as Slow Boat to China and Sleep revealed to me that Murakami is just as skilled penning short stories as he is penning novels. In fact, early in his career Murakami was more noted for his short story collections than his novels.

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman consists of stories that Murakami wrote during the first twenty-five years as a writer and this book contains two of his oldest stories: New York, Mining Disaster and A "Poor Aunt" Story. His first short fiction was the previously mentioned A Slow Boat to China. The most recent stories, the last five in the book, were penned in 2005, so the reader is able to experience the shifts, the changes, and the evolutions of Murakami's stories through the years.

Being that the last four years of my life or so have been devoted to reading, researching, and writing on Murakami's literature, I might not be the most objective reader of this collection because of my familiarity with Murakami's writing style and themes. Many reviews mention how "strange" or "bewildering" the stories are, but to those of us who have read Murakami for a number of years, they come off as just pure Murakami and stories of green monsters, vampires, and man eating cats are perfectly normal next to those of romance in college.

Another thing that will be of interest to longtime Murakami readers is that included within this volume are the stories which would later evolve in longer works such as Norwegian Wood and Sputnik Sweetheart. It is interesting to see how these stories would later evolve into these much longer works and how Murakami can work an idea that was originally a twenty-five page story into a six hundred page novel.

Not all of the stories in this volume are perfect gems, but there are no chunks of glass either. Each brings something different to the fore and they can easily grasp the reader's heart. I believe that "Tony Takitani," Murakami's lone short story from 1990, might be the most heartrending work by the author because of its themes of love and loss. Also, I believe that this volume would be a good introduction to new readers of Murakami, because it gives equal doses of odd and normal. However, what exactly is odd and what exactly is normal?

5 out of 5 stars Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman:24 Stories by Haruki Murakami.......2007-07-09

I've fallen in love with Murakami's works. I've read Kafka by the Shore and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles--now these short stories. Murakami's mind is wide open and unbelievable. I believe he's searching for the difference between reality and fantasy--if there is a difference. Things become what they weren't before. Impossible people and animals talk about and do things that noone else could imagine. I think you just have to jump into his brain and go where he leads you. You might not understand everything, but you'll love the mystery. His works are not to be confused with science fiction or fantasy genres, they are completely another cat.

1 out of 5 stars Kiss The Moon Goodbye.......2004-01-05

Great? Entertaining? Suspenseful Read? Rocked My World? What book did you people read? Because the book I read wasn't anything close to suspenseful let alone entertaining. And if this is Glendale, CA's "Favorite Book", I suggest Glendale hit the bookstore!
The plot was lame, and the characters were obnoxious. And like Wyatt, I learned more about maple syrup than I ever wanted to know. I'd suggest Cold Ridge or The Harbor if you want to read a good book by Ms. Neggers.

1 out of 5 stars No Sensible Plot.......2003-06-15

I recently read Ms Neggers' book The Harbor, enjoyed it so much I went out and bought 3 more of her books, BIG MISTAKE. I read the reviews of Kiss the Moon and figured another winner, not so.
The story is based on the plot that quirky irrepressible Penelope finds a 45 year old crashed plane. She is under the impression that the crash victims are still within. So, she does what every adventuresome person would do. First, she alerts the media and then, "Oh my goodness!" she retracts her statement because she doesn't want the town's hermit nor her not as adventuresome but equally quirky cousin to come into the limelight. Never mind that everyone and their mother knows of both.
Okay, let's say I buy this premise but wait there's more. The nephew of one crash victim comes to town to find his missing uncle. Does our heroine show any compassion? No, she's still hung up on saving the privacy of a hermit she isn't even sure is nonthreatening. But she has her reasons because said nephew is a SINCLAIR. Now so far the reader has learned that Sinclairs are thrill and adventure seekers....oh how diabolical, so of course Penelope and the rest of the residents regard them as people of dubious reputation and I guess not having the same emotions as "normal" people. I mean really why would the Sinclair family want to bring home the body of a loved one especially when Penelope has determined the forest is a great resting place.
So enough already, this book was a complete disappointment. How anyone could consider Penelope anything but irritating is beyond me. Get over the constant reminder by the author that she was spoiled as a child, that's suppose to be a legitimate excuse?
The final insult to the reader's intellect is on page 359 (paperback ed.) when Harriet is referred to as Wyatt's half sister, I don't think so...do the genealogy here.
I'm as happy as the next person to escape into a good suspense this was neither.

5 out of 5 stars Kiss The Moon- My favorite book........2001-01-03

Kiss The Moon was a delight to read. I usually do not like reading books, but this is one novel I will never forget. The book includes mystery, love and adventure. This is the kind of book I could not put down. I could not wait until I find out what really happened to Colt Sinclair and Frannie Beaudine. I could not imagine what happened with them when they were so in love, and caring a tone of money, in diamonds. The book was written in a way to keep you reading. There was not one boring part in the book; it got more and more interesting. If you love reading love novels you cannot, pass this book by. It has twists and turns that unfold at the end with the beginning of a new relationship. It gets you into the mood of grabbing the book jumping into bed, and reading the book under candlelight. The love between Colt Sinclair, Frannie Beadine and later Pehelope Chestnut and Wyatt Sinclair was so sweet; it made me want to read more romance novels like this one. The author used good details within the story to convince the reader that Colt and Frannie were in love and that made the reader curious as to what happened to these two couples, who were very much in love. One of the strengths of this book was the plot, climax and the conclusion. It is very dull to read a book and know how the book is going to end while your still on the third chapter. This book, on the other hand, never gives you any real clues as to how it actually turns out at the end. You would be surprised at how Carla ties everything together at the end. If I knew how the book ended before I read it, I would read the book just for the conclusion. In addition to the plot, Carla also introduced wonderful characters, one of which was Pehelope Chestnut. She had so much to her than just a suspicious love struck girl. It was interesting reading about how Wyatt wins Pehelope's trust and how she always whines up getting herself into a different, and dangerous situation. What's interesting about Pehelope is the fact that she kept her big discovery a secret. Even Harriet did not understand how Pehelope could keep the secret from her, when they were so close. Kiss the moon pretty much had no weaknesses except for the role of Harriet. Clara could have contrived better material if she had tied Harriet into the mystery. She was an important character in the book, and Carla could have used her personality and past to create a better climax and conclusion.

I bought this book on impulse, and could not put it down.

I loved the main characters. Penelope especially reminded me of myself, always in getting into trouble without trying to! Wyatt was great - strong and yet sensitive! The setting appealed to the outdoors person in me.

The storyline was solid and interesting. Penelope has to decide between the desire to solve an old Sinclair family mystry and protecting those close to her. She chooses the later which brings Wyatt Sinclair to her doorstep. Wyatt wants to solve the family mystry, but has to win Penelope's trust before she will tell him the answers. In the meantime someone not so honest begins to frighten Penelope, can she trust Wyatt to help her?

    A great read.

      Book Description

      Dear Reader,

KISS OF THE MOONis filled with magic, curses, heroes, and villains. It's set in medieval Wales, an intriguing place filled with deep magic, dark castles, brooding heroes, and strong-willed heroines.

Adventure, allure, and avarice hide in the shadows of shadowy forests and candlelit towers of Castle Prydd where an ancient prophecy is fulfilled when Sorcha of Prydd comes into the world:"born during a tempest, with hair the color of a raven's wing, eyes the blue of midnight, and the kiss of the moon on skin like alabaster..."It's said that whoever is born with the KISS OF THE MOON birthmark upon his skin will rise to become the savior of Prydd. No one ever expected the chosen one to be a woman! Not only is this heresy, but an outrage. Surely the fates are wrong...or are they?

Years later, Sorcha's courage is sorely tested when she must save her kidnapped sister and in doing so enters Hagan of Erbyn's bedchamber. Never intending to be seduced by the arrogant and handsome lord, she places a knife to his throat. But that is just the beginning -- and soon her pulse pounds whenever he's near. Though she warns herself that Hagan is her sworn enemy, Sorcha can't convince her wayward heart.

KISS OF THE MOONis a tale of curses and lies, trust and betrayal, and, ultimately, the power of love. I hope you are captivated by it.

The Werewolf's Kiss is the first book in "The Werewolf Trilogy," a ground-breaking trilogy that follows the history of a clan of werewolves centered around New Orleans. This is the story of Sylvie Marley, a rare creature drawn to the Moon and the night with the urge to run wild in the bayous. She is also in love with the young, handsome werewolf Lucien Drago, son of the Duchess de Marais. She too could be a werewolf if she chose, called as she is by the spirit of the Moon and the family's werewolf curse. Although her father, Andrew Marley managed to lift the curse, Sylvie still has the choice between the life she craves as a werewolf and the life of a normal young woman. However, that choice may be taken from her by a madman seeking power as the new king of the Voodoos. To prove himself, he intends to force Sylvie to become a werewolf with his magic, thereby sealing her fate, and her life, unless he is stopped.

        5 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-15

The Werewolf's Kiss gives the reader a look at the Louisiana werewolves. It draws the reader into the close-knit community of the werewolves. The characters backgrouds are explained with great clarity! You'll have no trouble finding a character to root for! The reader will feel like they are one of the werewolf community in this book. The character's worries and fears become the reader's worries and fears. The last few chapters are sure to have the reader on the edge of their seat!! This is a must-read for any fan of werewolf literature!!!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Running Wild.......2004-03-04

I really enjoyed this book. It is a keeper that you can reread and enjoy over and over again. The story is great and the characters are really believable. If you enjoy werewolf books or other books along this line you will enjoy reading this book.

        3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2003-09-26

I liked this book because it discusses werewolves like Anne Rice does vampires. Also, the stories of the individual characters were very well written and engrossing. However, the storyline that held the book together was rather week.

Its worth a read, but it won't wow you.

        4 out of 5 stars A Unique Tale.......2003-07-24

I am not a regular reader of Lycanthropy (Werewolf) books however I decided to give this one a try. I found out that I have been missing out. This book is an excellent read. This book is just one of three. I look forward to the other two. (2nd coming out in October 2003 & the 3rd coming out in January 2004) Buy this book & you will not be disappointed.

        Sincerely,

        Jenjaylynn

        4 out of 5 stars Werewolf Love.......2002-03-17

I read all three Scotch werewolf books. They are certainly different. I love werewolf books because they are all so different. Every author has a completely different take.

What is so interesting about Cheri Scotch's series is that she manages to combine so many different elements in relatively short books. These books have it all. We have mystery/detective work; historical background and sweeping drama; we have several love stories; supernatural, including voodoo and of course, werewolf folklore; interesting backdrops of New Orleans, as well as other interesting places. We also have interesting personal relationships: parent/child; lovers; revenge; friendship....But most of all, good triumphing over evil. Oh, did I mention the religious storyline? You name an element, it is here.

These books manage to combing countless characters, most of which are included in all three books; and countless storylines without being unhinged or confusing. Holt manages to go back and forth in time periods with different characters and pull it all together in the end.

I liked Cheri Holt's take on how one becomes a werewolf. Her ideas were very different than I have read. I also liked the way she dragged voodoo in and made it part of the wolf-lore. The details of voodoo were as interesting as the wolf details.

I am not going to go into the plotlines of these books, because frankly, I don't think I could. They are all just too complex to describe...and believe me I tried. I was trying to sum it up for a friend and failed miserably.

What I would like to know, is where is Cheri Holt? Why did she write three great books almost ten years ago people are still raving about and then disappear? And where are the book publishers? Hello!! Can we say reprint here? There are still buckets off money to made with her wonderful books...

1 out of 5 stars "Your Love Will Torture and Torment You".......2004-09-14

The melodramatic and cliched title "Kiss of Death" says everything you need to know about this book - it is silly, dull, predictable, confusing, and ultimately pointless. Characters are one-dimensional, suspense is non-existence, questions raised go unanswered, and the story itself is packed full of endless episodes that go no where and lend nothing to the flimsy plot.

It's summer in Winthrop, Massachusetts and four teenagers are settling into a hot and humid break. They are Jeffrey Thomas, his girlfriend Barbara, his best friend Paul, and other close friend Miranda. Winthrop is your average seaside town, but a new arrival stirs things up: Rebecca Webster, a very beautiful young woman who seems to have an intent interest in Jeffrey. Soon weird things are going on: your usual nasty accidents, odd dreams, weird animals and abnormal behaviour from our main characters. Jeffrey in particular is effected by Rebecca's presence, and it doesn't help that his awe-struck girlfriend is dressing exactly like her.

So what's the deal with Rebecca? What does she want with Jeffrey? The answers won't be found in this book - you'll have to spend more money in order to get the second book, which has the even more ridiculous name "Dreams of Revenge". There is absolutely no reason why this slim volume should be split into two books, except - of course! - it makes you spend more money this way!

The author ends chapters like R. L. Stine's "Goosebumps" books - with dramatic, gasp-inducing shocks...only for the beginning of the next chapter to take place several days later, telling us in hindsight what really happened. For instance, a teenager in the diner begins to choke on her food, and we end with "Silently, Vicki slipped off her chair to the floor". The next chapter begins a week later, with characters commenting on the strange occurrence, saying simply: "Thank goodness she was alright", without any explanation on how she was saved. The entire narrative is riddled with these cliched `suspense' moments that have no real purpose in the over all story, and aren't scary enough themselves to merit their presence. Almost every chapter ends with one of these attempts at shock, and eventually they just get silly - from "then there was only darkness," to "then, mercifully, a velvet darkness enveloped him as he lost consciousness" to the ludicrous "Rebecca didn't have a telephone." Horrors!

Finally, the forced `love' story between Jeffrey and Rebecca is unlikely (based entirely on the effect she has on him, which the reader can hardly experience or understand for themselves) as well as repetitive - she draws him in, she pushes him away, she draws him in, she pushes him away - you get the picture.

Definitely give this particular teen-read a wide berth.

        5 out of 5 stars Exellent book.......2004-01-23

Out of all the books i have read i would say this is in my top 10 books that really got my imagination flowing, and elizabeth moore should keep writing. I would love to read more of her books. she is an inspiration to many people including myself.

        5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2002-01-29

I read this when i was a very little kid. I thought it was the most amazing book i'd ever read. And to this day whenever i write i use the name Rebecca. That book molded me to be what i am today... a strange person who likes witches.

2 out of 5 stars This book was the kiss of death!.......2000-06-02

The writing in this book was truly terrible. There wasbasically 200 pointless pages in which the cast of one-dimensionalcharacters went on and on about how wonderful Rebecca was (and I didn't particuarly think she was all that great). Then there were ten pages that were somewhat interesting (and earned the second star, since they sparked a bit of interest). This was one of the worst books I have read in a long time. It wasn't even suspensful, or scary, and it's supposed to be a horror book!

4 out of 5 stars It was well detailed but it had a few problems........1998-11-22

It was written well enough that I'd like to find the sequel but I'm not completely impressed with it.

5 out of 5 stars PINK BLOOMERS . THE OVER HOT WASHING MACHINE ........2002-10-15

One has to marvel at the prolific writing skills of dear Barbara . I once owned a horse that refused to eat its oats , but would gnaw cheerfully ,on a Barbara Cartland book ,then tap dance for hours ,with a rose between its teeth .The sheer romance of her work enthralls , even those of us with four feet .In this delightful book we are transported to the world of Dukes and there Coconut carvings . The Duke who married a fire engine ,never laugh at a bowl of stewed prunes , and a touch of an unemployed town crier . All three are little pebbles in the hillwalkers boot . OH I do wish Henry would stop pestering the gardeners daughter .

5 out of 5 stars Collecting bed sores and enriching the vet ........2002-10-13

For all you cynics who belive that romance is dead , perhaps it was not your partner . After all you had been working hard that week , and even if it was , how can you be so sure ,that checking into a motel as mr and mrs smith for two hours , was in any way suspicious . Dear old Barbara would put your mind at rest.and in these perfumed pages ,our old hearts are set to flutter as love blossoms . First its a good old fashioned tale of passion and hatred , between Lord Cockbury the seventh earl of undergarb ,and his fiery half gypsy half aubergine dentist . The tale ends as you would expect from such romantic fiction ,with the two lovers .fighting a naked duel on the Westminster bridge at midnight ,with only a few out of date tomatoes dying in the snow along with the lovers . Sob sob I can not continue its all too heart renching . My only complaint with these stories ,is that far too often the villain of the piece ,turns out to be wearing thermal underwear ,all the better for hiding tropical fish I suppose .

3 out of 5 stars Three complete novels of Barbara Cartland.......2000-06-23

It was cute as usally. Typical of a Barbara Cartland book. If you read Barbara Cartland book before you will realised that she is an author that stresses love will conquer all philosophy. Unfortunately, she tends to write very little and tends to be brief to the point. These stories are very consise and moving for your emotions. You will not put it down until you are done. But by the time you are done reading it you will likely say that is it. Where is the rest of it. These stories are great but most of the time it leaves the reader wanting to read more about it even though it is the ending. These stories are way to short but they always gurantee you a happy and charming ending.

3 out of 5 stars three complete novels of Barbara Cartland.......2000-06-23

This book was sweet and short. It pulled me more in the emotional sense. Too bad it was short. The plot seemed to easy and there was really no conflict for the main characters to solve but sept for their feelings for one another. But anyway I did like it because it kept me up all night and I could not put it down.

5 out of 5 stars For the romantic at heart (cynics please abstain).......2000-05-25

The first time I read a Barbara Cartland book, I was transported, as she would write, like an angel up to heaven! Her stories are a combination of the "Contesse de Ségur" books I loved as a child and the "Angélique" movies I still love as a woman. I love the way she writes. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but her tales of innocence and tenderness touch me on a fundamental level.

                Book Description

"I Kiss the Moon" talks to the heart. Throughout the collection, the author confronts ever-changing life, the sad and the sweet, while leaving the reader with shades of hope upon her pages. The emotion and passion of each piece invites the reader into a place of wonderment, reflection and appreciation for the simplicities in a life where excess has slowly become the norm. "There is no doubt that these poems are sincere and heartfelt; this poet isn''t afraid of becoming vulnerable." T. Richard Williams Poet, author of David By The Sea, 21, Unshaven "Bravo!! L.P. Chase. My visual of the author''s writing is like peering through, and moving between two windows. One is a frame surrounded by the scorching flame of sadness and its subsequent pain. The other, panes framed by frost bitten introspection and subsequent perceptual gain. Bravo!!" Prof. James W. Banks, R-CSW Dr. Love Millennium/Poetry Team Advisor Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs, Suffolk County Community College "A fresh and pleasant addition to the poetry genre. Chase''s imagery has been created with the human condition in mind. A very humble and satisfying read." Krissy Brady, Editor Brady Magazine www.bradymagazine.com
