4 out of 5 stars Atticus, a review. .......2007-08-29

Atticus is a story of Atticus Cody, who learns of his son, Scott's, suicide in Mexico, and goes on a search for the truth. Ron Hansen uses suspense and mystery in this writing. He feeds the reader a little information at a time that leads to the outcome, pulling you in to the story. There are multiple plot twists in the story, keeping you on your toes and interested in the book. However, slow to start, the story picks up speed as Atticus reaches Mexico and begins to find the answers he is looking for. Atticus begins to suspect murder, and the story turns from a search of a heart broken father, to a murder mystery. It seams Atticus is more interested in finding why his son was murdered, than getting his body back to Colorado. Part way through the book the story switches points of view, from Atticus to Scott, and the story starts again. This is an interesting writing strategy, because it helps to answer any questions the reader may have, while still keeping him or her in suspense. Although some parts are hard to believe, this story is an all around good read, and is guaranteed to keep you in suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Atticus: An Insightful and Interesting Novel.......2006-09-06

When I began reading Atticus I didn't realize I was going to be reading a mystery novel. If I had known it was a mystery novel I probably would have put the book back down. Atticus starts off rather slow with a bit too much detail about characters who have little significance in the book as a whole. If you are able to endure this without giving up on the book then it takes off into a wild mysterious novel which twists and turns when you least expect it to. Not only was it a fascinating murder mystery, but it was also a very well written story about a father and his undying love for his son who is always messing up. Hansen does a fantastic job in tying the story together with a great passage from the bible regarding a father and a son. By the time the reader turns the last page he has been exposed to and learns the meaning of true love. All in all Atticus is a very insightful and interesting novel which I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a meaningful yet fun read.

3 out of 5 stars Atticus.......2006-09-06

Atticus was not my favorite book in the world, but it was an interesting story that was suspenseful and surprising. People who like mysteries and stories that are filled with moral lessons about life and forgiveness would really enjoy Atticus.
This was a story about the 65 year old cattle farmer Atticus Cody and his son Scott. Atticus was an old fashioned, hard working farmer who lived a simple life. Scott was 40 years old and had not done anything with his life. He was always partying and spending his father's money, but Atticus loved him no matter what. One day, Atticus learned that his son had committed suicide in his home in Mexico. Atticus went to Mexico to go to Scott's funeral and to take care of everything that needed to be done.
As the story went on, Atticus, who refused to believe that his son had killed himself, began to find evidence that led him on the trail of a murderer. When Atticus was nearing the end of his investigation, the plot took and unexpected twist and an unbelievable event occurred.
This book will keep the reader on edge for almost the entire story. Once past the unbelievably boring first chapter, the story begins to build momentum and does not stop until the end.

4 out of 5 stars Atticus: A Review.......2005-10-04

In the beginning of this gripping novel of a father who tragically loses his son, we are given a background and description of Atticus' life as a rancher, among other things. This part of the book is mind-numbingly boring. As the story progresses though, it begins to gain momentum, becoming more and more interesting as the pages turn. As Atticus travels to Mexico to identify his sons' body, reportedly a suicide, he becomes increasingly convinced that his son was murdered. This story is riveting, and the ending is a complete surprise. This book is a good read for anyone, and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Complete waste of time? I think not........2005-09-19

Atticus, the story of a 67-year-old cattle rancher from Colorado and the search for his thought-to-be-dead son, not only exceeded my expectations, but has proven to be an exceptional mystery novel. When Atticus Cody receives the call that his artist son, Scott, has committed suicide, he travels to Resurrection, Mexico only to find something amiss. There to search for answers to his son's alien lifestyle and clues to his sudden death, Atticus Cody gains new knowledge concerning his son's demise; he was not suicidal, but rather the victim of murder. Exposing this new plot twist, Ron Hansen takes the reader for a ride, packed with exciting new revelations on every page. Full of countless twists and turns, the gripping narration keeps the reader glued to the story, ultimately leading to the biggest shocker of all. Though slow to start, the pace gradually increases with the realization of Scott's murder, but fluctuates throughout the remainder of the novel. The story concludes in a most unexpected fashion, so be prepared for a big surprise; the ending itself makes up for much of the frustration and confusion created regarding setting and characters. The abundance of detail and wealth of information can lead to some misunderstandings concerning plot particulars, though the story becomes much clearer once finished. Although the complexity of the characters can be seen as a nuisance at times, I see it as one of the novel's strong points; the skill required to add so much color and life to a story is indeed praiseworthy. The novel is presented from the viewpoints of both father and son, which both answer various questions that form when reading the book; the dual perspectives help give the story more depth, which in my opinion, allow more room for satisfaction (which is always a good thing.) Overall, this book provided an enjoyable read, though proved to be almost too informative at times (especially in the beginning), making it hard to follow. Though definitely not the most exciting reading experience I've had, I definitely recommend this book to others.

The subject is BGs--bodyguards--and Natalie Trent (bred and buttered in the personal security business, where her father, Elliot, is a top player) says to Atticus Kodiak, "You know what a bad reputation BGs have. Most people on the street think a BG is a muscle-bound heavy with mirror shades, undereducated and overarmed."

Atticus, of course--as readers of Greg Rucka's explosive and intelligent books about him (Finder and Keeper) already know--is none of the above. He does tend to get involved in running gun battles in heavily populated urban areas, however, and has lost a client or two in a shootout. No wonder the very slick Elliot Trent doesn't want him as an employee, let alone a son-in-law, in a case involving the protection of an eccentric scientist about to blow the whistle on a giant tobacco company. But Atticus worms his way in anyway--and the results are as exciting and packed with fascinating inside details of the BG trade as ever. Particularly entertaining is a scene where Atticus and Natalie are hired to test the security of a safe house, using everything from unordered pizzas to volleys of tennis balls to irritate the guards. And the presence of a very spooky world-class hired killer known only as John (or Jane) Doe keeps the tension wires at maximum tightness. Another fine performance from a writer ready to move up in weight and class. --Dick Adler

Book Description

Greg Rucka has won national acclaim for his two gripping thrillers, Finder and Keeper, which have been hailed as "impressive" (People), "remarkable" (The Orlando Sentinel), and "full of surprises" (The Houston Chronicle).  Now, in Rucka's most explosive novel to date, professional bodyguard Atticus Kodiak returns to confront an enemy without conscience or mercy--a master of manipulation, a pure connoisseur of killing.

For a professional bodyguard, there's nothing worse than being tagged as a man who attracts danger.  But after his last job, that's just what they're saying about Atticus Kodiak.  In fact, there's only one person in the business willing to touch him with a ten-foot pole.

An easy job, according to Elliot Trent, head of New York's biggest security firm: baby-sit a pampered playboy hiding from the angry brothers of an ex-playmate.  It's a job Kodiak finds himself forced to accept, a decision that draws him into a multimillion-dollar game of cat and mouse.

The mouse: Jeremiah Pugh, a material witness whose testimony can knock the legs out from beneath America's mighty tobacco industry.  Racked with guilt, Pugh may be his own worst enemy.

The cat: known only as John Doe, one of the Ten, designated by international law enforcement as one of the ten most dangerous contract killers in the world.  A ghost, unknown and unidentified, who changes with the wind and adapts to any situation.

Drawn into the field of fire by Elliot Trent, Atticus finds himself exactly where he doesn't want to be--between the killer and the target.  For Atticus and the assassin are bound by a common thread: their obsession to get the job done.

It's an obsession that will connect the assassin and the protector in the most intimate of relationships, anticipating each other's moves, exploiting each other's weaknesses, baring each other's secrets, and raising the stakes in a game where the first player to flinch...dies.

In Smoker, Atticus Kodiak meets his match in a thriller of unrelenting suspense guaranteed to suck you in, blow you away, and leave you breathless--a novel that confirms Greg Rucka's place among today's top suspense writers.

4 out of 5 stars Atticus can sure piss you off sometimes........2007-05-02

Atticus Kodiak is a character you love but want to smack a couple of times as well. I love the whole series though I do have my favorite in Shooting. What really has me coming back again and again are the characters and their relationships. It's that real for me. Can't complain about anything that Greg Rucka writes really because he's just a thriller genius. However I found myself getting really grumpy with Atticus sometimes because Bridgette is my favorite and everytime he slept with Natalie I was that much more annoyed with him.

The thrills in Smoker were great with Drama added into the mix. This is the start to taking Atticus to another level in the future book Critical Space.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth.......2007-01-04

I have now read 4 of the Atticus Kodiak stories and ready for Critcal Space. I have been hooked. I have just one question though. I don't know anything about depostions, but why couldn't the ones involved be brought to the secure compound Pugh was being guarded at, instead of dragging him out under expected risks to everyone concerned. Was it done this way just to make a good story or is that the way it had to be done. It seems to me if everyone could go to some hotel suite they could go to the safe house.

Atticus just keeps bouncing back.

5 out of 5 stars A New Level of Suspense...A High Octane Thriller!.......2006-10-11

Bodyguard Atticus Kodiak job is to protect his principle. Assassin John Doe mission is to eliminate his target. A duel ensues when they engage in a battle with conflicting ends. They each play to win. The question is who will be victorious.

Clever plotting and taut pacing kept me souring through the pages. If you're looking for a rapid-fire thrill ride, this is where you get on. Smoker is in a class all by itself. Atticus Kodiak is compassionate, humble, and damn good at what he does. Definitely someone you want covering your back. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Rucka Nails It!.......2004-10-15

Greg Rucka's primary strengths are his characterization and pacing and in SMOKER it all falls perfectly into place. His protagonist Atticus Kodiak returns, still aggravatingly introspective but immensely compelling, as does Rucka's social commentary and intricate plotting. With a tobacco industry whistleblower as the principal, Rucka gets a little heavy-handed at times with soapbox monologues but because his characters are so well-defined and the plot makes sense - something that hobbled FINDER at times - it works without feeling forced.

Kodiak's supporting cast is particularly strong this time around, with "John Doe" and Jeremiah Pugh stealing the show whenever they're on stage. If Rucka ever scores a movie deal, this is the book I want to see on screen.

KEEPER was a strong debut. FINDER was a solid, if over-the-top follow-up. SMOKER is the complete package.

4 out of 5 stars A well developed protagonist makes this series a success.......2003-10-08

I've read Rucka's first three novels (Keeper, Finder, Smoker)after reading some of his comic book work. What astounds me about the Atticus Kodiak novels (so far) is there consistency. Atticus is a living breathing person, made more so by his imperfections. I agree with an earlier reviewer that I was screaming "Idiot" as much as I was cheering him on. In this way Rucka's books are like Owen Parry's Abel Jones series, as both featuring people who are as close to reality a fictional character can get. You have your disagreements with them, and yet you know at the end of the day you like and respect them, and would be proud to call them friend.

Returning to "Smoker", I don't think this is my favorite of the series, but it is still an excellent book. Atticus Kodiak finds himself guarding a key witness against the tobacco industry. While Rucka does make his view of this debate known, it isn't the primary focus of the novel. Wisely, Rucka focuses on Kodiak's battle with a master assassin, who hangs over the proceedings like a grim fog; Kodiak knows the assassin is there, but doesn't know what that person has in store.

While the ending is a little weak, the overall novel is a definite success of tension, suspense, and human conflict, from the battle between killer and protector, on to the mundane interactions of people in their daily lives. Rucka gets it right in ways that certain people in the genre have not.

5 out of 5 stars Great series.......2006-01-22

No, I don't actually own this book. I do own the whole Atticus Kodiak series, the paperbacks. I love them. What I like about Atticus is that he's not an infallible superhero, but just a good bodyguard trying to do his best. And sometimes things don't work out exactly the way he wants. It's all in the game.
What I don't like is that I haven't seen a new Atticus Kodiak novel for a while. When a new one does arrive, given time, I like to reread the previous books in the series, so i'm totally into it again. Yeah, I really like them...

2 out of 5 stars Violent but formless.......2005-10-31

These books are about a bodyguard. His job is to take care of people until he can find out exactly who is threatening them. The rest is genre-typical mystery-thriller action, with some Clancyesque notions floating around in the description of weapons and tactics. The real problem I have with this book is that the main characters behave like morons as they contort their lives to do what is convenient for Rucka's overflavored, abundantly dramatic plotlines. There is no way to identify with people who behave as if they are not living their own lives, or lack the wisdom to note they are alive and bear the consequences of their action, especially when the author injects saccharine moralization to make us "feel" the "meaning." No, thank you.

Professional bodyguard Atticus Kodiak is still having trouble dealing with the death of his best friend at the end of Keeper, Greg Rucka's well-received first thriller. So, in this exciting and suprisingly moving sequel, he takes a job as a bouncer at a New York club called The Strap, which caters to the bondage trade. But when the 15-year-old daughter of his former colonel turns up at the club and is menaced by a tough Brit who happens to be an SAS commando, Atticus quickly finds himself back in the action.

      Book Description

Tough, tense and thought provoking, Greg Rucka's incendiary debut, Keeper, proved Rucka intends to change the face of the modern thriller. Now, in Finder, his hero, bodyguard Atticus Kodiak, confronts a case which pits Kodiak against a relentless killer...and his own private demons.

From a chance encounter with a teenage runaway in a seedy S&M club on Manhattan's lower East Side, Atticus Kodiak is forced to seek a missing juvenile, an elusive lover, and a fortune in embezzled funds--and to take a hard look at own tangled life. In doing so, he will step over the line from hired seeker to the target of a sociopath who knows the inner workings of Kodiak's heart better than Kodiak does, trapping him in the ruthless crossfire of duty, honor and twisted love. The result is a remarkable novel extraordinary for its harrowing twists, razor-sharp characters and prose like the ticking of a time bomb about to explode. Finder offers definitive proof that Greg Rucka is among the best suspense novelists writing today.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Fierce.......2006-12-14

I have just started this book, but read Keeper just before this. I agree with several of the reviewers. It's unbeliveable anyone just 28 has had the experiences and adventures of Kodiak. The thing that bothers me most is his indiscriminate love life. He seems to sleep with whomever is handy. And how much older was Erika's mom during their "romance" since he was 24 and Erika was 11. Sounds like Diana was robbing the cradle, but Atticus was more than willing. I too couldn't understand Atticus enlisting the help of all his friends in a protection scheme when no one knew what was going on other than they would be pitted against some of the world's best trained killers. And what was a British team doing there in the first place? Was the retired colonel that important? It doesn't sound from the other reviewers that I will get many answers. I hope there aren't too many 15 yr olds like Erika in this world. If I am naive I'll stay that way thank you.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Step Up From Comics.......2006-08-21

Greg Rucka, who is best known as a contributor to several comic book series, once again flexes his literary muscles in the second installment of the Atticus Kodiak series. Although the plotting and events border on the improbable, this in part is what helps the book succeed. Like the old saying about life being what happens when you are making other plans, the consequences of the characters actions in this book do NOT always happen the way the reader anticipates them. This adds a touch of reality to this book, that combined with Rucka's tight verbal prose make this an interesting and exciting read, and leave me looking forward to reading more. If you want your formulistic action thriller then you will probably not like this book. However if you want your characters to be fallible and human and struggle to their victories and enjoy lean and well crafted prose- then don't miss FINDER.

4 out of 5 stars Another strong outing for Kodiak.......2004-07-15

(3.5 stars) Picking up three months after the events in KEEPER, Rucka combines another fast-paced plot with some welcome fleshing out of his main protagonist, Atticus Kodiak. Kodiak has issues and I still think he's implausibly young for what he does but this time that actually plays into the story somewhat as his relative inexperience - not to mention his immaturity in dealing with relationships - is highlighted when he comes up against the SAS, in what is basically an extremely over-the-top custody battle.

Like Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder series, Rucka earns a suspension of disbelief because he's so good at developing his characters. If there's one flaw, it's the same problem KEEPER had, with New York City feeling a little too sterile. The names and places are all correct but there's a certain something missing, that something that Block does so well in making the City a living, breathing character as opposed to simply a backdrop.

All in all, another strong, if flawed, outing and I look forward to reading the next installment in the series.

2 out of 5 stars Builds you up to a big fizzle.......2004-06-17

The book itself is alright, if you dont mind the author's bland, verbose, and tedious writing. But be prepared for a big letdown because the ending of the book is one of the worst I've ever read. I wish someone had warned me, so I'm warning others. I like the characters, but the book doesnt flow fast at all and it really fizzles in the end with no climax, and it was a big dissappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Gritty, With Heart.......2002-09-07

Rucka does certain things masterfully. His dialogue crackles with realism and intensity; his characters breathe down your back, they're so alive; and the emotions he conveys are rich without being melodramatic. Atticus Kodiak, his protaganist, moves in a circle of foul-mouthed, partying friends, yet maintains a style all his own in the midst of the muck about him.

Here, again, Atticus Kodiak is at work as a bodyguard, this time watching over the daughter of his former lover. Erika's all grown up now--or thinks she is--and isn't always hip to the idea of his guardianship. What's truly eating young Erika, though, is the power struggle between her despicable parents. She takes out her frustrations on those sent to protect her, but finds a friend in Kodiak's off-and-on romantic interest, Bridgett. With trained assassins opposing Kodiak's team, the odds seem stacked against him, but he manages to come through...not without some physical and emotional scars along the way.

If you're a fan of G-rated mysteries (in the Mrs. Pollifax vein), steer clear of Kodiak. If you like your mysteries tough and gritty, with a bit of heart (think Dashiell Hammett after the sexual revolution), then give this series a shot.

            Book Description

He watches with disbelief, slashed and bleeding, as the stunning, raven-haired beauty tumbles out of nowhere. Wondering if his injuries are playing a hoax on his eyes he rushes to find her. Jerad is a high-ranking Noble, descendant of Antheia, Third Corridor of the Tenth Zone. Ordained as Keeper of the Key it is his duty to seek the wisdom he knows she possesses, the knowledge to unlock the mystery to Orion's belt.

She watches in fear, shaken and bruised, as the ferocious looking warrior falls from his horse and hits the ground. Realizing he desperately needs her help, she rushes to his side. Sera is a well-trained military officer, space traveler from Earth, sent on a mission to explore the stars. She has no connection to his peculiar prophecy.

There is just one problem. Sera is a woman without a past, or at least one she can recall. After plunging through the skies and hitting her head, Sera has lost her memory. With her ship in flames and unable to contact her people, she is alone and stranded on an alien planet. To make matters worse, the warrior claims that she is the Ptino asteri..Starbird of the Edict..sent to save his world.

Moreover, he has every notion of taking her home.

What choice does Sera have? Her only chance of survival, it seems, relies on Jerad's help. With much reluctance, she follows him to the Third Corridor, and because of it, she nearly dies. Forced to participate in the Rite for the Cloak, Sera faces the fury of an irate challenger intent on taking her life. Through a stroke of luck, she survives.

Sera awakens in Jerad's bed, injured and distraught, but relieved to be alive. She also discovers that she is now Jerad's bride.

But having her husband bed her is the last thing Sera wants.

Though his kisses make her quiver and his voice seems to beckon her like an enchanting serenade, Sera has only one goal, to wait for the rescuers to take her home. She will not remain in this barbaric world where challenges by blade settle disputes and the drawing of blood is a commonplace thing.

She does not belong there, or with Jerad.

The thought of letting Sera go impales Jerad's heart like the thrust of a thousand swords. Yet he refuses to believe that his torrid longing for her is nothing more than his burgeoning lust. The foretelling designed the marriage, to join the Starbird with the Keeper of the Key.

He fulfilled his obligation. Sera is his wife by rite, not by heart.

The fates however have other ideas.

Jerad and Sera cannot deny the overwhelming devotion surging between them, the unquenchable yearning for each other's touch, the cadence of their swelling hearts..lovers destined to be torn apart...but a love woven in a seamless bond so fierce it will transcend the boundaries of the universe.

Now, with Jerad light-years away and awaiting execution, Sera wonders if there is more to the Edict than she realized, or if she is merely losing her mind. Was she really sent to save his planet?

Sera is determined to uncover the answers.

Will the revelation send her across the galaxies and back into Jerad's arms, or cause both their worlds to come crashing down? Can her tattered emotions survive the truth? One way or another, Sera has to find out.

            3 out of 5 stars Third Corridor.......2006-02-10

Sera falls out of the sky and finds herself in a forest after being ejected in mid-air from her burning aircraft. All she remembers is that everyone else on her craft was burned to death in the fire. Injured, dizzy, and in strange territory, she cannot remember anything about her past. The first person she sees is a warrior on a horse, who falls off his horse at her feet without saying a word to her. Later on, the warrior, Jerad, having regained consciousness, decides that she is the "Ptino asteri"-the promised saviour of the planet. Sera, on the other hand, cannot even remember which planet she is on.

This is just the first of the strange events that Sera experiences in this interesting novel combining science fiction, time travel, fantasy, and paranormal suspense elements. Both the heroine and the reader are initially puzzled by the familiarity of the individual fragments of the society in which she finds herself. As the plot develops, the picture begins to coalesce for the grand climax. While much of the plot is built around the romance of Sera and Jerad, the love scenes are sensuous rather than erotic.

The pacing in this full-length novel is uneven, with three-quarters of the story devoted to a thorough examination of life on Protogio. I will admit that fantasy plots are not generally my favorite, and I didn't find it riveting. However, the last quarter of the novel adds the science fiction spicing, and is a fast-paced run to the climax and resolution of the story. If you enjoy fantasy and time-travel stories, you will love this one. If you like science fiction, keep reading through the slow beginning, and you will find the rest well worth reading. -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)

            5 out of 5 stars Very Unique.......2005-09-28

Sworn to duty Jerad has only one goal in mind...deliver the promised Star Bird predicted in their edict so that she can save his planet. Sera fell from the sky and she has no idea what he's talking about. I loved how these two met. I loved watching them overcome conflict in a society that was determine to bring them down. I loved watching them fall in love and bound by that love nothing could tear them apart. This is a science fiction romance set on a far away planet. The imagery is vivid. The society that the author weaves is detailed and complex. The plot is riveting. with twists and turns that kept me reading until the very end, and what a surprise the ending brings! This is one of the best stories I've read in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Cookie cutter romances...this one is NOT!.......2005-09-28

I read the reviews at the author's website. I read the reviews written here. I bought the book because it looked intriguing and it was! The plot is inescapably mesmerizing and the hero and heroine are just so dynamic together. Both injured, both feeling a sensationally deep and emotional loss in their lives, they find each other, only to discover that they were meant for each other, by phrophecy or fate...who cares. I fell in love with them and the plight they had to endure. Read this...it isn't just you're dull futuristic romance. Angel Lynn is a storyteller who can weave a plot from the first page!

1 out of 5 stars Have you ever trudged uphill in the mud during a rainstorm wearing sandals with the wind in your face. .......2005-09-28

You would know exactly how it feels if you read this book. Somehow I slogged through until the end. Have you ever seen a person with a concussion get up and ride a horse? Or our hero, deathly ill from his wounds, assists our concussed heroine to his home where she then fights an experienced warrior for his hand and WINS! OK, I'll give our author some room, this is after all a fantasy. But for my money save your dollars and buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Futuristic story.......2005-04-26

Wonderful Debut novel by the very talented author Angel Lynn.
