    Book Description

Adventures in Yiddishland examines the transformation of Yiddish in the six decades since the Holocaust, tracing its shift from the language of daily life for millions of Jews to what the author terms a postvernacular language of diverse and expanding symbolic value. With a thorough command of modern Yiddish culture as well as its centuries-old history, Jeffrey Shandler investigates the remarkable diversity of contemporary encounters with the language. His study traverses the broad spectrum of people who engage with Yiddish--from Hasidim to avant-garde performers, Jews as well as non-Jews, fluent speakers as well as those who know little or no Yiddish--in communities across the Americas, in Europe, Israel, and other outposts of "Yiddishland."

    Book Description

This unique book is an unforgettable journey into the heart of Yiddishland, a mythical and real land that has never appeared on a map of the world, but whose frontiers have forged rivers, crossed oceans and spanned continents. Although, tragically, it no longer exists, Yiddishland - a huge area that stretched from Poland to the Ukraine, Belorussia, Romania, Bessarabia, Eastern Hungary and the Baltic States - lives on through the telling imagery of the humble postcard.

Gleaned from the millions preserved in attics, trunks and Jewish family archives all over the world, this remarkable collection brings to life the immutable rhythm of the shtetl. The pages are alive with rabbis, professional marriage brokers, itinerant water carriers, bright-eyed yeshivot students, porters, beggars and brilliant intellectuals, plus synagogues, hospitals, cemeteries and those sadly unavoidable scenes of suffering and persecution. The humble trades that kept entire populations from starving to death are shown in minute detail.

Poignant, touching, and alarming these fleeting moments, frozen in time, portray a civilization which might otherwise have been forgotten. They enable us to relive the past, incite us to remember and record for eternity the history and the legend that is Yiddishland.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of Ravishing Beauty.......2003-05-08

This extraordinary book describes that place known as Yiddishland through a f a collection of postcards from many geographical and cultural corners of the world. Whether Yiddishland is real or mythical is unimportant: what is significant is that these photographs depict a place which no longer exists, but which was held together by the common thread of the Yiddish language. Each photograph is more stunning than the next with a never before seen images of the people, places and things that make up the Yiddish culture. Tears actually welled up when looking at some of these photos as I realized that this beautiful place from our pasts exists no more except here in these pages. This is a book is a great gift idea, and a must for anyone interested in photography, Yiddish culture or just plan beauty. I am so very happy that someone had the skill and courage to undergo this amazing project which speaks like a sparkling work of art.

4 out of 5 stars Loving trip to Yiddishland, Wish You Were Here.......1999-11-27

This is a great idea for a book and a great gift. For some months, I have trolled through ebay and Amazon auctions, clicking on but never buying copies of old standard and Jewish postcards. The co-author of this book has one of the largest archives of Jewish postcards and images, and he has compiled them into this amazing collection of old Shtetl and Jewish life postcards. They provide the reader with an glimpse of what the Yiddish world was like and what images people wanted to retain. In the words of Gerard Silvain, "Collecting of postcards has become the second largest type of collection in the world...More moving than any other type of collection for the Jew in search of his roots, the postcard collection is still little known by the general public.

          Book Description

Sheds new light on the unjustly forgotten literary worlds of Yiddish immigrant writers.

According to traditional narratives of immigrant assimilation, Jews freely surrendered Yiddish language and culture in their desire for an American identity. In Recovering "Yiddishland" Bachman offers a challenge to this conventional literary history, returning readers to a threshold where Americanization also meant ambivalence and resistance. She reconstructs "Yiddishland" as a cultural space produced by Yiddish immigrant writers from the 1890s through the 1930s, largely within the sphere of New York City.

The book spotlights significant works by Yiddish immigrant writers that reveal unexpected and illuminating critiques of Americanization. The author takes a fresh look at Abraham Cahan's Yekl and Anzia Yezierska's Hungry Hearts. Bachman discusses the modernist poet Mikhl Likht, whose simultaneous embrace of American literature and resistance to English assimilation marked him as the supreme "threshold" poet. Combining sophisticated academic analysis of literary works with her own personal encounters with Yiddish writing, Bachman offers a provocative and highly readable contribution to Jewish literary history.

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Story had lots of potential, but delivery fell flat.......2007-09-13

I adore romances that begin on the premise of the hero and heroine being childhood friends, or having known each other for a long time. I also appreciate the unusual setting of this romance occurring between two "commoners," rather than always being between two titled people of London's elite. That said, coupled with the brilliance of most of Maxwell's other works, this story had a lot of potential, but the delivery of it fell short of my expectations. Because the plot has already been summarized several times, I will just point out why this book only earned 3 stars from me --

                - The heroine behaved like a shrew towards the hero for 4/5 of the book. While I appreciate feisty and independent-thinking heroines, this one was unnecessarily rude, bitter, and sometimes even downright cruel to a man far too deserving for her.

                - The amount of tension in the novel between the hero and heroine (mainly caused only by the heroine herself for ridiculous plot-contrived reasons) really took away from the romance of why I even read romances to begin with.

                - The plot was very predictable, there was really no "villain" or secondary characters to speak of, and I doubt I will remember much about this story after a couple weeks of reading several more romances.

All in all, this book gets 3/5 stars for me for its original storyline, background, and the fact that it was well-written. Minus 2/5 stars for the unnecessarily shrewish behavior of the heroine, and the predictability in the deliverance of the promising storyline. I would recommend it only if you merely want to pass your time -- you won't find a ground-breaking, heart-wrenching story here, but I suggest checking your local library or buying a cheap used copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great -hate you, but I really love you romance.......2006-08-02

Barely making ends meet, horsewoman Mary bids over her means in order to secure a prized 'horse stud' for her estate in hopes that breeding will bring about her financial success and sticking it to neighbor and fellow horseman, Tye, makes it that much sweeter. In a desperate attempt to get the money in order to pay for the horse, Mary goes to London to find a rich husband. That doesn't sit well with Tye, sore from being out-bid and a bit suspicious, he follows her -because he wants the horse of course. Mayhem insues when, gorgeous, but socially inept, Mary storms the London social scene. Tye's there for rescue her when scandal results. Romance blooms in the shadows and maybe they figure out that the stud isn't that important anyway.

Great romance. I love fiesty females and Mary takes the cake! She causes scandals just by breathing, a real tough cookie that doesn't take it from anybody -including Tye. He's just that man to lasoe this filly in. One of my favorite Maxwells. If you liked Falling in Love Again and You and Only You, you'll like this one too.

4 out of 5 stars Mary wins The Studýand a horse tooý.......2004-04-13

Mary Gates wants this stud in her stables. The Stud is a prime piece of horseflesh up for auction in her hometown of Lyford Meadows. The entire town's male population will be in attendance to witness who places the winning bid. Mary believes this horse is just what she needs to bring her stables back to full operating glory of the past. The town views Mary's independent and willful behavior as quite eccentric, including her normal attire of donning men's breeches. And her desire to win the horse may also have something to do with her constant battles with her neighbor and rival, Tye Barlow.

Tye is just as determined to win, because it would secure his stable's future as well. And he believes he has a good shot with the amount of money he's willing to bid. In the end, Mary outbids him but he's suspicious, because he knows there's no way she could own that kind of capital. Mary's winning bid is well beyond her means, but she makes up a fictitious, wealthy fiancé, and then convinces the seller she needs a little time to make her payment. The independent Mary, who never intended to settle down, sets out for London and the marriage mart to snag herself a rich husband. Tye discovers where she's gone, and follows with the intention to foil any possibility of her paying for the horse.

Their complicated history resurfaces, as well as their desire for each other, which of course has always been there in the form of a battle of wills. Together, they may discover the real prize isn't the horse, but their love for each other.

I've read three or four novels by Maxwell, and this is my favorite so far. I enjoy romances that involve the battle of wills, which is done well here. Although, I did think Mary's obstinance over her independence did go on a little too long, but that's only a minor issue. Even though there's not much new here for a romance story, I still found it refreshing and the witty dialogue probably had a lot to do with that. Mary and Tye were both headstrong characters and well matched for each other. There's nothing heavy-duty about this story, it's a nice light, recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, Fun and Exuberant.......2003-08-25

Tye and Mary are delightful characters--very likable, feisty and well suited to each other--in this very fun and fast-paced Regency romance. The warmth, wit and lust for life characteristic of all Cathy Maxwell romances is evident here and makes this winning novel a charming read.

4 out of 5 stars More than one stud in this story.......2002-12-28

I enjoyed this offering by Cathy Maxwell. In this story a woman who is basically trying to save her family horse breeding ranch does what she must. She feels that all she is worth is what she is able to do to the home she knows. So one day she sets out to buy the "stud" of the areas for her horses and ends up in a bidding war with one of her neighbor. Who she shares a past with.

She ends up bidding more than she can handle and to get the rest of the money she goes to London to find a husband. What she doesn't count on is an embarrassment from her past showing up as well as her neighbor Tye. What ensues is a great romance story!

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining read but not a keeper.......2001-09-29

My second foray with Deborah Hale - I read "A Gentleman of Substance" last year.

The plot of this novel was an interesting idea although I have seen the reverse Pygmalion concept better done; Judith Ivory's The Proposition is better, in my view. Ivory's quality of prose is better than Hale's and her characters are better rounded. My main problem with this story was that the male protagonist was not well enough developed. The idea of using an enlisted man (rather than an officer/member of the nobility, etc, etc) was good but it just did not stand up to scrutiny as we do not know enough about his army experiences to understand the adult man. We know about his past as a footman and are given insight into how this effected him (eg he enlisted)and although we are given to understand Morse Archer was something of a hero in the Peninsula, we aren't given enough detail to sketch in his character.

Although Richard Sharpe (of the famous Bernard Cornwell series) was an enlisted man promoted from the ranks to officer, he never was accepted in the drawing room as Morse Archer is and Sharpe had more "elevated" tutoresses than Archer. So, this is a rather dangerous idea to write about without some better understanding of the social and military history of the times.

I don't think that Leonora was particularly sympathetic although eventually she does come to a good degree of personal insight and I was glad she woke up and went after her man! I don't think her behaviour was particularly beliveable within the contemporary context of her times. However, she matured and developed in a more believeable way than Sgt Archer.

I also question the plot device of having Algie fall in love with and expect to marry a servant - no matter how clever and sweet she might have been (and stupid but sweet he was), they both would have been ostracised from polite society and most certainly never accepted by her class either. A nice idea but ultimately completely unbelievable and therefore unsustainable.

I found the first half the the book somewhat boring and it was not until I was into the second half that the characters and the story began to satisfy. The pace was too slow; not enough happened and I kept waiting for some satisfying character development.

The author clearly has some talent but needs sharper editing to crisp up her writing and plotting. I shan't give up on her yet as I think she has potential and she was not afraid to take an unusual plot device and try it out.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous twist on Pygmalion........2001-06-19

Deb Hale's story is a twist on one of my favourite Bernard Shaw books. This is another keeper in my eyes. A well thought out tale loaded with back story and great motivation, The Wedding Wager is one of those stories that keeps you up at night. The hero is to die for. Who could ever resist a handsome soldier? I found the setting vivid and fascinating. The tension between the hero, Morse, and the heroine, Lenora has depth and orginality. I loved the ending, but won't give it away here. This story is too good for that.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, delightful Pygmalion tale.......2001-06-17

Deborah Hale takes a bit of Pygmalion, a dash of Cinderella and adds her own special spices to create a charming and delightful story. Ms. Hale is also a virtuoso when it comes to imagery, which is always appropriate to the time period and the character's histories. A wonderful read!

                5 out of 5 stars Pure delight!.......2001-06-12

Deborah Hale's newest, a variation on the Pygmalian story, is pure delight. Lenora Freemantle's wealthy uncle makes her a wager she can't refuse. If, within three months, she can take a common soldier of her uncle's choosing and educate him well enough to pass as a gentleman officer during a Season at Bath, her uncle will finance her dream -- a school for indigent girls. He will also make Lenora the headmistress of the school and take care of her financial needs so that she never need marry. If she loses the wager, however, she must marry the man of her uncle's choosing. She's got her work cut out for her, however, in the intractable Sergeant Morse Archer! These are two very memorable characters. This piece is a little lighter than some of this author's other offerings, but the emotional payoff is there in spades. It won't disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful characters in a delightful Pygmalion tale..........2001-06-07

Deborah Hale takes a Pygmalion premise, adds a dash of military heroism, a little bit of Cinderella and creates something uniquely her own. While every character, major or minor, is well drawn, her hero, Morse Archer, is particularly memorable. Wounded both physically and emotionally, he is a true gentleman at heart -- and what a heart! Rarely have I envied a fictional heroine more! Ms. Hale is also a virtuoso in her use of imagery -- always appropriate to the time period and drawn from the characters' experience. A truly delightful, entertaining read.

                    Product Description

Independent, unconventional, and marriage-averse, Mary Gates will do anything to own the one stallion she knows will restore her family's stables to their former glory. She even bids money she doesn't have a rash action that soon has her off to London to find a rich husband who can foot the bill. But Tye Barlow, her rival for the horse and her family's longtime adversary, follows her to England to make sure she doesn't succeed. There, they end up finding love and a logical solution to their problem. Despite the obvious conclusion, Maxwell's engaging characters, exceptionally well done dialog, unexpected plot twists, and lively writing style make this fast-paced journey memorable and well worth the trip. Noted for skillful writing, dry humor, and an uncanny ability to create realistic, imperfect characters, Maxwell (The Marriage Contract) is gaining a following, and her well-crafted Regency historicals are some of the best on the shelves.
