If you like your women as cruel as they are beautiful, you may fall hard for Philippa Stockley's darkly witty novel, A Factory of Cunning, which follows an exiled French aristocrat as she pimps and swindles her way through London in the summer of 1784. Having been routed from Paris by a mob (for her involvement in a scandal), our resourceful heroine set herself up as a brothel keeper in Amsterdam, hiding behind her faithful but almost equally heartless servant Victoire. When the marquise's past misdeeds pursue her in the form of an assassin, she and Victoire flee for the English capital, where she assumes the name "Mrs. Fox" for reasons too ribald to reveal here. In journal entries and letters--especially to her Dutch admirer and protector Hubert van Essel, who enlists her in a long-simmering revenge against a former friend--"Mrs. Fox" describes the havoc she wreaks before stepping daintily out of danger, lifting her skirts to show her pretty ankles. In the spirit of Les Liaisons Dangeureuses, though composed in a higher key, A Factory of Cunning is the very definition of a guilty pleasure. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Set in late eighteenth-century England, Philippa Stockley's American debut gives us a wickedly delightful but deadly serious battle of the wills and the sexes. It begins with the arrival in London of the mysterious Mrs. Fox. On the run from a scandalous French past, she takes on a new identity, determined to rehabilitate herself. To do so she must pit her formidable skills for revenge against Earl Much, a British aristocrat with no less notorious a past and easily her match in sinfulness and intrigue. Between these two swirls a story featuring venal lords, wronged maidens, and reprobate clergymen, transporting readers from bawdy houses to country estates-places where the pleasures of the flesh are both high comedy and serious business.

A Factory of Cunning takes readers to the world immortalized in Dangerous Liaisons. And, like Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White, the vividly rendered setting and characters give the thrill of a fresh discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Scandalous! Heartless! But, O! What Fun! .......2007-01-30

Ms. Stockley has mastered the art of writing letters & journal entries like a saucy tart or a dandified fop in the 1780s, and has produced a book sure to please those readers who find themselves thinking that Jane Austen would be a wee bit more interesting if she'd rebelled just a tad against her role as a clergyman's daughter...

This is a witty (and in truth, a rather nasty) little book, told via letters between the story's stars and completely in character. Careful reading will leave you laughing at the dripping sarcasm, innuendo and political jibes peppered through the correspondence which tell this story. The reader is lured into the sticky middle of a web spun from intrigue, lies, corruption, pimping, pandering, love, vengeance, incest, spoiled innocence, and a smattering of other distasteful topics. Attention to the author's footnotes (which are written as if the novel were an edited collection of letters) and end notes will provide additional entertaining detail and sarcasm for your reading enjoyment.

Mrs. Fox, our main villainess, has escaped murder by mob in France after ruining the lives of several innocent people for sport, feining small pox, duping the masses and escaping to Amsterdam. There she sets up shop in a brothel - high end, as if it matters - and begins a friendship with a man which grows, reluctantly, into love. Fox flees to England in effort to escape the clutches of an enemy bent on revenge and lands in London. She soon finds herself bored and for pleasure begins to tinker with the lives of others, until her paramour in Amsterdam discovers her past, reveals his, and inadvertantly sets in motion a string of devastating and coincidental events. Realizing too late that Mrs. Fox is more than up for the deprived challenge he posed, he writes desperately to save her from herself only to realize that she has drawn in a number of other unsuspecting people to do her dirty work and provide her with amusement. As the post is slow and Mrs. Fox is stubborn, things get a bit out of hand...

If you are looking for a temporary escape into the seedier side of London during one of it's more colorful periods, open the pages & enjoy A Factory of Cunning.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful read.......2006-11-26

The sharp, and sharp-tongued, Mrs. Fox is a charming anti-heroine. She lies, she steals, she cheats...but you can't help admire her wittiness and bravery as she picks her way through English society (most of whom are also lying, cheating, and stealing from each other with impunity). As each of the characters she encounters connects to others in turn, and the intricacies of their relationships become apparent, Mrs. Fox's final encounter with her pursuers draws closer and closer. Stockley's arch language is wonderful, and not to be missed if you enjoyed reading the original Liasons Dangereuses.

4 out of 5 stars Factory of Cunning.......2005-08-23

An epistolary novel that offers a "sequel" to Les liaisons dangereuses.

I found Factory clever, often devastatingly funny, wonderfully differentiated in its voices and considerable in its tension -- the latter two qualities being difficult to achieve in epistolary novels. Some of the plot elements -- Violet's experiences and the long-lost sister -- are well-worn, but the manner of telling is so fresh that it doesn't really matter. "Mrs. Fox", unrepentantly awful and cheerfully unsinkable, is a gem.

I think some readers will have trouble following the plotline, especially in the beginning, and the quick-spoken, intricate period diction, particularly in Mrs. Fox's voice, may lose some, but the book rewards close attention. It would appeal to readers who enjoyed books like SLAMMERKIN and THE DRESS LODGER, but its tone is far more arch.

Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Promising at the start ..........2005-08-06

First, one of the reviewers says that this novel is set during the era of Charles III. It's actually set during the Georgian era (1784 making it during the time of George III), one of the most interesting periods of history for historical writing, I think.

This epistolary novel is a continuation of Dangerous Liaisons. It's a good attempt, but I wasn't thrilled with it. Basically, it centers around the plot of what might have happened if the Marquise had escaped France and made it to England to wreak whatever havoc she might wreak there, while also helping a friend destroy a villainous earl.

The characters in the novel are very well-written: Mrs. Fox is very sharp-witted and clever, Lord Danceacre and his friends are funny and entertaining, and Violet is by turns hilarious and ridiculously stupid. Stockley also manages to give her writing that witty spark that is so necessary in novels centering around a clever, selfish woman. The plot itself is also tightly woven, bringing seemingly random occurrences and people together in the end, as all novels of this type should do.

Something, though, just never seemed to click for me. Maybe it was because there was not even one character with whom a reader could really sympathize. Or, more likely, perhaps it was that the supposed villain of the plot was hardly ever in the novel, except to be described by other people. Set up as someone who would finally match wits with the marquise, I was disappointed by the lack of interaction and repartee between the two. Considering all the dire warnings about the earl's vengeful and almost satanic nature, he was a bit of an anticlimax to me.

However, the book was an enjoyable read, and definitely conveyed the mood of the times. Stockley clearly has a sharp wit, and it comes out in her portrayal of several characters. For that, it's worth reading, though perhaps it's better to get it from the library or borrow from a friend than to purchase it yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Could've Been Better.......2005-06-17

Firstly, it appears that most readers are familiar with Les Liaison Dangereux and have indicated that this book "echoes" the aforementioned. However, what it seems Phillippa Stockley has actually done is taken the story of "Dangerous Liaisons" where it left off and proceeded forward with all previous characters referenced. This would make for a seemingly excellent opportunity for a good story. Though rather well written linguistically and in an interesting attempt at unravelling the story via letters from one character to another, the reader can't help but fall into several pitfalls.

To Begin, there really are too many characters in this story who, with some, remain very undeveloped leaving the reader wondering why. Additionally, it almost seems that Stockley's Mrs. Fox forgets her original focus to destroy the Earl Much in a sudden new direction of interest via the character Violet's story of seduced debauchery. As for the Earl, he's supposedly a violent and malevolent person who we could compare to the Viscount in "Dangerous Liaisons". However, his character's supposed evil never truly comes across because his only letters are those which show a "gentleman". It would've been far more impressive and convincing to have the Earl writing letters involving his own twisted plots. Regarding all letters concerned, too often Stockley attempts to paint the story in a communication format between parties that would not make sense in true letter writing. Finally, the ending of the book is a disappointment. It's almost like a Hollywood story of the supernatural stepping far outside the bounds of the original setting.

If a reader is interested in a book that's interesting and fun, then this book will work. If you're looking for something that would be regarded at literature, this book does not fall in that category.

I was very disappointed in this book. Ever since I learned that the house I grew up in was built in 1752, I've been fascinated with early American architecture, particularly old farmhouses, outbuildings and barns. I was hoping to discover the original floorplans for some of these sprawling farmsteads I've seen through the northeast and midwest. None of the houses included in this book look like any of the farmhouses I've seen. What about the huge two-story farmhouses meant to hold the dozen or so children farm families had in order to work the farm? Most had a large central hall at the entrance with a large staircase. Some had the kitchen in an ell so the whole house wouldn't be heated by the wood cook stove in the summer, or even had a separate summer kitchen. There is no mention of saltboxes or sprawling capecods with the sheds that connected to the barn. Plus every barn shown has the animals housed on a floor below ground level! Most of the old barns I've seen house the animals on the main level and have a loft for the hay. If you're looking for original floorplans of old houses you're familiar with, look elsewhere!

      5 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind book.......2006-08-25

This was exactly what I was searching for....a history lesson on how to properly plan a site for a home with ancillary buildings on anything over an acre.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia and Fun Bits of History.......2006-07-04

This book is all about 19th century buildings, just like the title says. These are the houses that pushed forth from the established coastal settlements through upstate NY, OH and the Midwest during that century of expansion. I confess that this isn't my preferred style of house, but the book itself is a delight. The illustrations are exquisite; Currier & Ives stuff that make you just want to jump into the scene. And the texts that accompany the plans are full of fun facts. This is not a scholarly text, just a breezy ride back through time with a guide that makes it all come alive. You'd have to be a real curmudgeon not to enjoy this book ...unless of course you were determinedly looking for something else. A note however on the coverage. Although the subject of the book is the 19th century, the early part of the century (Federal and Greek Revival in particular) up to about 1840 is not really treated in this book. This book is about what was built during the industrial revolution, when things -including house plans- were mass produced. Buy it for a couple of hours of light reading and some new perspectives on how we lived and built in the latter 2/3 of the 19th century.

5 out of 5 stars A rare find of historic country building plans.......2001-04-14

I am an architect designing a house for a client -it is a Charleston Style house with the master bedroom in a "carriage house" attached at the rear. This book helped me to create/design a more authentic carriage house. I am a horse lover from way back so I ate up the book front to back! I was pleased to find many examples of architectural details and embellishments. The plans of historic houses and barns are a rare treasure. Would be fun to build one of the farm houses!

5 out of 5 stars A background of the evolution of early american housing.......2001-03-21

Donald J. Berg does an outstanding job of showing the evolution of the designs and the backgrounds of the designers of single family housing primarily in the 19th century. The plans and illustrations are excellent for those that want to use them as a guide for present day construction.

      Book Description

Fun and a little hard work. That's all Tess Haviland had in mind when Ike Grantham paid her for her graphic design work with the run-down, 19th century carriage house on Boston's North Shore. Then Ike disappeared and now Tess finds herself with much more than a simple weekend project to get her out of the city. It's not just the rumors that the carriage house is haunted--it's the neighbors: six-year-old Dolly Thorne, her reclusive babysitter, Harley Beckett...and especially Dolly's father, Andrew Thorne, who has his own ideas about why Tess has turned up next door.

But when Tess discovers a human skeleton in her dirt cellar, she begins to ask questions about the history of the carriage house, the untimely death of Andrew's wife...and Ike's disappearance. Questions a desperate killer wants to silence before the truth reveals that someone got away with murder.

2 out of 5 stars Good start and then faded into boredom.......2007-09-24

I have read two other books by Carla Neggers, On Fire and Night Scents, both were romantic and fairly suspenseful but what appealed to me the most was that they were well written. The Carriage House started out pretty well and I was excited to start another of her books but several chapters into the book I noticed a big change; the characters had turned to cardboard and most of what they said was stupid and forced. The romance and the suspense had turned to pure boredom. I started wondering if Carla had written the first few chapters and someone else had finished to book for her. It just wasn't the same caliber of author from the first two books I had read.

2 out of 5 stars This book started great, but then it went to the dumps........2004-04-10

When a person finds a dead body in the basement, you call the police. I can not believe that Tess did not do that. After that the book seemed to go down hill. I figured out that Ike was the skeleton and who had killed him before I was even half way through the book.
I did enjoy the interactions of the characters to each other. I really enjoyed Dolly Thorne's daughter, the little princess. I like that Tess was not any wimp by any standards, and the fact that she was not perfect in figuring out the mystery. I would not recommend this book for the suspense, but I would recommend this book as a good romance.

2 out of 5 stars Started well... then went downhill.......2003-08-31

As a great fan of romantic suspense, I was really excited by the premise and the interesting beginning of the novel... but as it went along I found myself getting frustrated and wanting to throw the book across the room. Tess's (the heroine's) thoughts seemed to jump around, stupid choices were made (for a supposedly smart woman) and scenes and dialog were sometimes hard to follow. Motivations were often unclear and information omitted. The relationship between Tess and Andrew was very tepid - there was little hint of true passion and growing affection between them, and their meager love scenes were mediocre. The characters of Dolly and Harl were sweet and/or quirky, but not enough to rescue the novel's flaws. I felt sadly let down at the end and expected better of Carla Neggers. I'm not sure that I would buy this author again.

4 out of 5 stars Good read, solid characters and plot.......2003-01-17

I enjoyed this book - it had solid characters and it was nice to revisit people from prior books. This book was superior to The Cabin, in my opinion, and thank goodness she cut down on the "texas ranger" phrase. Perhaps I'm missing something, but Neggers seems obsessed with overusing phrases in her writing, and if there is one downfall in this book, that would be it.. using one phrase over and over again. Tess was a strong female character, and Sam was a good match for her, and the murder plot was interesting too, although some parts (like the kids running amuck) were hard to believe. Overall, an improvement from The Cabin.

3 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2002-11-19

This was an average book - it kept me interested, but barely. I've been enjoying Neggers' books for a few months now, but this was my least favorite. The romance was barely in the book at all - the two main characters hardly even interacted and we're supposed to believe they're in love after two kisses? Yeah. Anyway, the suspense wasn't all that captivating either, and the main character (Tess) was rather cold towards her family, I thought. I think Neggers is a good writer though and would suggest starting with some of her other material first.

It would be useful to someone who knows what size and type of structure they want to build and don't know where to find the plans. The authors give a good synopsis of the framing options that a homeowner has when considering building, and pros and cons of each. Also, I reccommend reading the paragraphs about laying out your farmstead.

This is similar in format to Berg's "Barns and Backbuildings" and "Backroad Home" and, like those, will be a great help if you're dreaming to build.

        5 out of 5 stars Valuable ideas.......2000-10-13

Wow, this book is great! Terrific plans and a great resource tool. Just what I needed for inspiration. There are samples of the carriage barn, stable and garage designs on Donald Berg's website...See for yourself!

        1 out of 5 stars GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT..........2000-10-03

THIS IS A VERY DISAPPOINTING COMPILATION. THE INFORMATION GIVEN IS EITHER AN ADVERTISMENT TO BUY OTHER DESIGNERS' IDEAS, OR IS ALREADY READILY AVAILABLE FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET. MOST OFFENSIVE ARE THE TERRIBLE RENDERINGS; FIRSTLY, BECAUSE THEY ARE IN LIGHT GREY, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DISCERN ANY DETAILS, AND SECONDLY, MANY OF THEM ARE NOT EVEN CORRECTLY DRAWN TO PERSPECTIVE! ANYONE CONSIDERING USING THESE RECOMMENDED DESIGNERS SHOULD HAVE THEIR HEADS - AND EYES - CAREFULLY EXAMINED.

5 out of 5 stars Makes the "first building" question easy to answer.......2000-05-01

First, the definition provided by Berg: "In certain parts of the country, the terms `carriage house' and `carriage barn' are synonymous with any building that combines a garage and an apartment." The value of this book thus becomes obvious; many of us are faced with the dilemma of which to build first, the house or storage building to shelter tools and materials. So here's the answer, build a carriage barn that serves both purposes. Later, one can build the dream house and use the previous apartment as guest quarters or writing/painting/sculpture/crafts studio. As with his other books, Berg stimulates and inspires with lots of drawings showing classic and contemporary solutions to questions of style. Drawings from previous centuries and current working architects give a panorama of choices. Whether restoring an old carriage house or building a new one, this book is a useful tool for finding ideas, plans, and salvaged or new products for authentic construction or reconstruction.
