Cab @ The Door & Midnight Oil, Two Pleasures in One Volume.......2007-07-09
A wonderful single volume Modern Library edition of Pritchett's two volumes of memiors, Cab at the Door and Midnight Oil. Cab at the Door covers Pritchett's life from before birth to age 18. It is by turns: engaging, enlightening and laugh out loud funny. A good picture of post Victorian/Edwardian England. Pritchett's easy, self-depricating style keeps this poverty coming of age story from becoming another Mein Kampf (my struggle).
Midnight Oil is even better and was rightly called "A little Rolls Royce of a book." by Wilfred Sheed when it came out in 1972. The best and probably most realistic portrait of Paris in the 20's I've read. Very readable and important to anyone that wants to understand how a writer came to be. The pages fly by. I highly reccomend this Modern Library edition.

autodidact, out of chaos.......2001-04-19
VS Pritchett has written a splendid two-volume autobiography, which covers his childhood through his initiation as a writer. It is beautifully written and hilariously funny in places.
His early life was rather chaotic, both as a Christian Scientist and because of the ups and downs of his father's business, which meant they were frequently poor and the the children farmed out to grandparents. What is remarkable is his rise, from voracious reader to first-rate literary talent. Blocked from admission to university because he was put on a "craft" track in the leather trade, he gave it up and went abroad, the next best thing to a degree. In Paris as a semi-bohemian, he started writing, which led to jobs and a career.
His descriptions are so marvelous that I have remembered some of them for over 20 years. While a child writing for public-library event, he said he wrote the words so that they would "burn into the table" (if memory serves!); the essay was so good that the teacher thought he was really a professional writer. Nothing spectacular, but a first-rate story of coming of age.
I recommend it for any aspiring writer who wants to feel that some order might emerge from his/her chaos of early hopes. ALso for the literarati, it is the emergence of an unusual mind.

Book Description
A terrified three-year-old boy is found clinging to a wire fence at the side of a country road. His mother had whispered to him to never let go, and then she vanished. The only clue found by authorities as to the child's identity is a photograph of two summering teenage girls and a letter presumably written from one to the other. Sixteen years later, Walker Devereaux finds himself in Toronto to uncover the truth about his biological parents, of whom he has a dim memory. Working as a cab driver, Walker befriends Krista, a pretty, demanding, wheelchair-bound night dispatcher. Krista and Walker become fast friends, and she can't help but involve herself with Walker's quest to understand his shrouded identity. Soon enough, though, their off-hours sleuthing turns perilous as they become the prey of another abandoned boy who has transformed himself into the embodiment of his own desperate, violent, and sinister pathologies.

GREAT book!! Read it!!.......2005-11-13
I travel a lot in my car, so audio books are a must for me. I picked this one up at the library - and it was hard for me to turn my car off when I got to where I was going!
As you read in the summary, the book is about a 19-year-old who is trying to find out who his real parents are. He was found left by the side of the road when he was three, with only a photograph and a cryptic letter.
His hunt takes him to Toronto, where he and his new girlfriend do some detective work...and when they seem to have it all figured out, the author throws in another twist.
There is another side story in the book that takes place around the life of another teenager, but this scene is set many years beforehand.
Once the two stories meet up, everything falls into place.
This is a must-read for anyone who likes thrillers!
We want a sequel!.......2005-04-21
The title of this mystery/thriller is a bit misleading, probably because it was based on a popular radio drama of the same name. Certainly, the main character, Walter Devereaux drives a cab, but that's not the focus of the story.
MIDNIGHT CAB is set in Toronto, Canada, and it starts with a three-year-old boy clinging to a wire fence at the side of a country road. This is Walter Devereaux; he's found and placed in a number of foster homes before he goes to live with the Devereauxs in Big River, Canada. They're an ideal family and he loves them dearly, but he feels he must go to Toronto to find his real parents. He has a letter and a picture of two little girls that he hopes will help him in his quest.
Walter has trouble finding a job but ultimately he finds work at the A.P. Cabs owned by Alphonso Piatelli, who tries to hire him off the books. His night dispatcher, Krista Papadopoulos, soon puts an end to that and a romance ensues. Oh, yeah, Krista just happens to be in a wheel chair.
A parallel story has to do with Bobby Nuremborski, a young boy who hungers for the attention of his father. Bobby will remind you of the killer in LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR. He's gay but he won't admit it; his father would never tolerate a homosexual son. Eventually the two stories intersect leading to some gripping action.
The setting of the story shifts from Toronto to Jamaica, and that's when the novel loses some of its credibility. Like Tony Hillerman, when he moves the story off the Navajo reservation, the author, James W. Nichol, needs to focus on what he knows best. The Canada sequences are believable and compelling, Jamaica not so much.
Despite these quibbles I enjoyed MIDNIGHT CAB immensely and would like to see a sequel. Krista and Walter are likeable characters and the cab company is an ideal setting for a mystery series.
An intriguing entertaining thriller .......2004-12-23
Nineteen years old Walker Devereaux leaves his adopted home in Big River for Toronto, but not with the youthful vigor of living in the big city; Walker is obsessed to learn about his past starting with why his mom Lennie abandoned him on an isolated road when he was three. He has a clue from someone who apparently knew his mom; a letter that was written to Lennie from her school friend Kim that includes a picture of two girls that Walker assumes one is his mom.
In Toronto Walker obtains work driving a cab on a graveyard shift and a friend he deeply likes is wheelchair-bound dispatcher Krista Papadopoulos. Her brilliance enables Walker to follow clues that take him initially to the exclusive upper crust Forest Hill neighborhood and eventually to Jamaica. However, someone wants Walker and Krista to stop or else; perhaps that unknown culprit is the seemingly deranged Bobby Nuremborski who Walker must confront if he is to close in on the truth about what happened to his mother.
MIDNIGHT CAB is a solid suspense thriller starring two delightful lead protagonists whose banter lightens a dark tale. The prime story line is Walker's quest, but a subplot involving how crazy Bobby is will chill the audience who know that the two men will collide, but doubt whether the hero will survive. Interestingly in spite of wonderfully placed false leads and red herring missteps, fans know the altercation is coming so the suspense is somewhat muted when it does. Still James W. Nichols writes an intriguing entertaining thriller that will keep readers attention throughout.

Great Read.......2002-08-11
Really good! Different for any mystery recently read. Quirky, engaging characterizations with and original plot.

Book Description
She was rumored to be the fairest woman in all of England. But Holly de Chastel considered her beauty a curse. She had turned away scores of suitors with various ruses, both fair and foul. Now she was to be the prize in a tournament of eager knights. Holly had no intention of wedding any of them and concocted a plan to disguise her beauty. Yet she didn't reckon on Sir Austyn of Gavenmore. The darkly handsome Welshman was looking for a plain bride and Holly seemed to fit the bill. When he learned that he'd been tricked, it was too late. Sir Austyn was already in love -- and under the dark curse of Gavenmore...
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good story.......2007-08-31
I liked the book enough to keep it, although at times I did not like the heroine. Austyn was great, and I think that someone said he rapes her during the time he has her locked in the tower, thats NOT true. He does not hurt her or in any way rape her. Was he a bit forceful and distant? Maybe, but she wanted him and it was nowhere close to rape.
Am I the only one who found the heroine unbelievably immature?.......2007-05-04
From the back cover:
She was rumored to be the fairest woman in all of England. But Holly de Chastel considered her beauty a curse. She had already turned away scores of suitors with various ruses, both fair and foul. Now she was to be the prize in a tournament of eager knights gathering from across the land, each more determined than the last to win her hand. Holly had no intention of wedding any of them, and concocted her most outrageous plan yet: to disguise her beauty from their avaricious eyes. But she never planned on Sir Austyn of Gavenmore.
The darkly handsome Welshman had come looking especially for a plain bride and Holly seemed to fit the bill. Suddenly, she found herself in the possession of this mysterious stranger, ensonced in his castle, and forced to keep up her carefully planned illusion. Why did this electrifyingly passionate male, who could have any woman he wanted, desire a homely bride--and what would happen when he learned he'd been tricked? By the time Holly found out, it was too late to avoid the searing fires of passion--and the dark curse of Gavenmore...
And my review:
At first, this book seemed really interesting. While the heroine is out-of-this-world beautiful, the hero will fall in love with her, thinking she's ugly. And the hero is cursed: he cannot have true love or a beautiful woman, or he is doomed to kill her. I eagerly delved into this book.
And at first, it was a fun read. Medeiros' trademark humor shows in this story. The dialogue is fun and witty, the prose not overdone. The whole writing style has a nice flow to it.
But I couldn't stand the heroine. What a spoiled brat! Seriously, she acted like a three-year-old. I tried to get past it, but when she falls off her horse into a river and starts having a tantrum (complete with screaming loud enough to wake the dead, crying and beating her fists against the water) I tossed the book aside. For the record, it should be noted that the heroine suffered no injury other than wounded pride.
How am I supposed to believe that the hero will be attracted to her after that sickening childish display? I wanted to smack her one and tell her to shut up. Being upset from falling off a horse and into a river is understandable. Throwing a tantrum when you're a grown woman is not.
The first two books I read by this author were awesome. The third and fourth were okay, but not outstanding. But now I'm starting to think that it was a fluke. Everything else of her's that I've read since (seven books) have been flops. I give up. I'm not going to waste any more of my time or money. Not recommended by this reader.
A beautiful twist to a wonderful fairy tale.......2006-08-21
Holly is in the worst predicament of her life. Her father gave her a year to find a husband of her choosing but she can't bring herself to even fathom marrying a man who will do nothing more than gaze upon her in a mesmerizing stupor. She hated being beautiful. Worse, she hated men who courted her because of it and she was not about to marry a besotted idiot who thought only of her as nothing more than a decorative ornament made for his amusement.
Holly's father, in a fit of desperation to marry her off, organizes a tournament with Holly as the prize. Because she was reputed to be the fairest maiden in all of England, knights from all over the realm traveled to her father's estate to compete for her hand. Holly, however, has plans to thwart her father. When Holly presents herself to stand beside her father, what the knights see instead is an ugly hag with dull hair, bad teeth and a wide girth. Holly has disguised herself to discourage everyone from competing for her. Pleased with her plan, Holly thinks she's gotten away with it. To her chagrin, Sir Austyn of Gavenmore, a most feared and dangerous knight from Wales, will not withdraw from the tournament. He and one other knight are the only ones left to compete. Austyn wins, marries Holly, and carries her to his estate in Wales.
Since her plan has utterly failed her, Holly has no choice but to keep her disguise. But it becomes harder to hide her betrayal as her affections for Austyn grows, especially when she finds out that Gavenmore men have been known to marry beautiful women and then murder them for once reason or another.
I must admit that after the first fourteen chapters, I was ready to throw the book down. Holly, although beautiful beyond compare, is a willful and spoiled brat. I won't discuss the blame for the extraordinary flaw in her character but must conclude that such a flaw was an advantage in bringing her to the man she was fated to love. Admittedly, Holly evolves from a self-centered brat into a loving and courageous woman. Her physical beautiful becomes secondary to the person she becomes in this wonderful tale. The ending really makes the story. I won't say what happens but you won't be disappointed.
My first Medeiros book - and haters be damned - I really enjoyed it!.......2005-10-18
Basic plot: supersticious welsh lord wins the marriage of a spoiled princess. she makes herself ugly to spite him (and her father) but that's ok b/c he's cursed and if he marries a pretty chick he'll end up harming her. so it's a good thing she's ugly - oops or not . . .until he finds out she's pretty then he flips out!
I really enjoyed the plot-twists and the action in the end. I think the reason I liked this book a lot too is b/c the Hero's reaction was unexpected - and I LOVED when he finally stayed the night with her in the tower and then had to "let her go". It made me go out and buy 4 more Medeiros books and the rest are on the way.
Sure I believe in recycling, but this is ridiculous!.......2004-07-31
I bought two Teresa Medeiros books-- this one and 'The Bride and the Beast'. I read 'Bride' first, then this one, and was left with the conclusion that I may as well have just saved my money and read 'Bride' twice, since the plotlines of both were so similar! How many times can Ms Medeiros use these same twists in her stories-- the mad father, the woman locked in the tower, the man being a beast, etc.-- before she grows weary of recycling the same tired old plots? Don't get me wrong, Ms Medeiros is not a bad author. Sometimes her writing really grabs me, and several times I've caught myself laughing out loud at her witty japes. But there's not enough of this sparkling gold to outshine the dross and repitition, and I was left with that same feeling I experienced upon watching the first series of '24' on tv-- you know the one, when you wonder just how many times per episode the wife and daughter can get kidnapped! If Ms Medeiros can come up with some original plotlines (and stop using the word 'twas so often, which really got on my nerves by the thousandth repitition)and use a little more realism (you have to suspend logic rather too often whilst reading her books)then I think she'll be a really good writer. Until then, though, I wouldn't recommend her work very highly, unless you're really bored, or you fear change and enjoy the claustrophobic comfort of things always staying the same! More specifically, though, I wouldn't recommend her books if you have a problem with Stockholm Syndrome being used as a plot point, because it seems that the more the gals in Ms Medeiros's books get locked up and treated horribly, the more they fall in love with their men. This author seems very fond of the 'treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen' theory. If you find battered wives romantic, then this is for you!
However, if you want a gripping romance with decent plotlines about an intriguing hidden beauty, I would recommend Shana Abe's 'The Secret Swan' instead of this.
I initially gravitated towards this book because I'm a fan of fairytales written for adults. However, this oft-times disturbing tome is no fairytale! (Or not one of the happier ones, anyway.) Don't let the pleasant, benign, even witty beginning of the book convince you otherwise--it gets worse, fast. And don't think that it's full of fairytale magic and wonder, either, even though some reviews of the book give that impression. Other than the fairly ludicrous subplot about one of the 'hero' Austyn's forebears having had a failed romance with a fairy woman, who then cursed him and his male descendants throughout successive generations to hurt the women they loved, this is not a magical story set in any enchanted fairytale world. (Actually, to me the fairy's curse seemed like a weird, illogical thing--as an aggrieved woman herself, surely she would not want other women to suffer as she did, but rather would seek to hurt only the menfolk involved! To that end, cursing the men with something else, like ugliness, exceptionally bad body odour or heriditary gout, would have made far more sense than enacting a curse that doomed WOMEN!)
Another fault with this book is that it doesn't seem very historically accurate--in spite of the fact that it is supposed to be set in England in 1325, it really could have occurred in any other time or place. This author seems very lazy with her research and narrative: there is no real evidence in the book that the characters lived in 'ye olde England'--not in their speech, their manner or their lifestyles. Even worse, though, is the fact that the author tries to convince us that Austyn is Welsh. Shyeah, right, he's Welsh--about as Welsh as Coca Cola or koalas. If he's Welsh then I'm a Martian!
I'm usually quite a forgiving critic if I can see that the author at least had good intentions and gave it a damned good try. I'll even suspend logic on occasion, so long as I'm intrigued or well entertained by the storyline. But there's no forgiving this! It's lazily written, unrealistic, duplicitious of the author's other books, and expects us to believe that a woman will fall in love with a man who not only torments and humiliates her repeatedly, but then also imprisons and practically rapes her too. (Most of the sex scenes take part when the heroine is taken prisoner against her will by the hero!) If this were the subject of a text book about psychology then it might make compelling reading, lending us an insightful, heart-wrenching glimpse into why women stay with abusive partners. But this is supposed to be a light-hearted romance. A ROMANCE, goddammit! Forgive me if I didn't really find this book romantic. I'm just not that dumb.

Suspence, romance, class differences and the Jungle Book?.......2002-03-13
At the onset of this novel, Victorian wunderkind 30-year old Dr. Daniel Cantry, Esq. has forced upon him a girl raised by wild dogs in Africa. The lawyer for the family of this beast-like girl is a kindly gentleman, who sets a wager before Daniel. If he can transform the girl, Talitha, into a "normal" Victorian miss ready for her debut within 3 years, he will win 20,000 pounds from her "distant' relative, the earl of Hawkenge. Daniel accepts the wager and begins the nearly impossible task. Known for his brilliance both as a doctor and a lawyer, Daniel becomes convinced that there is more to the tale of Talitha's supposed loss in the wilds of Africa.
Without giving away too much of the plot, which has tremendous suspense and twists and turns which keep you glued to your chair, Daniel quickly realizes that Talitha is older than she appears, that the "distant" relative is much closer than he appears, and that her refusal to speak is not a sign of her lack of intelligence. Once provided with proper nutrition, Talitha grows nearly 18 inches and reaches a late puberty, but still does not speak until she is goaded to do so after many months. Once she speaks, Daniel is still confronted with the difficulty of transforming her into a proper miss and later protecting her life from those with designs against her.
Once her true character and intelligence is revealed, Daniel falls in love. But he refuses to acknowledge it and even after acknowledging it, refuses to marry her even though she repeatedly states her love for him, due to their class differences. As always, as an American reader, the class difference issue can be somewhat hard to believe, but the author does a clever job of displaying the differences between the working rural class from which Daniel came, the middle class of which Daniel is now a member, and the upper aristocracy into which Talitha was born.
This novel is one of the more original historical romances I have read in a long time, which considering that is clearly a cross between the Jungle Book and My Fair Lady, is quite an accomplishment. The plot is complex and the character development has tremendous depth. As you read, you can "see" the people and action in your mind's eye, because the author is so talented at description and evoking a scene and emotions. The ending felt a little rushed, but that is a minor flaw in an other wise masterful work of complicated plotting and character development.
Guaranteed to keep you excited.......2000-04-20
I really love the book and the characters in it. I love the way the author made the hero not seem interested with our heroin at the first half of the novel. If you are interested in books with a love-hate relationship then this is the book to buy! Daniel Canty can't stand Talitha at the beginning and Talitha was madly in love with him promising to be a lady so Daniel would be attracted to her and not to the ladies he was involverd with. This book will make you laugh, cry and heat up with passion!
Mixture of My Fair Lady, and a reversal of Tarzan tale........1999-09-05
This concicely written story tells of a child found in the wilds of Africa, and handed over to (of course) a dashing, wealthy, young bachelor, who is given the assignment to make her a lady. Romance takes a backseat to storyline most of the time, (which is a plus for that rare male reader like myself!) Browning wisely chooses to write in modern English, so there is none of that insipid "tis" and "wherefore" talk here, though it is set in the 19th century. This book deserved a hardcover edition.
Product Description
Once An Angel: The last thing Justin Connor expected to find washed up on the wild shores of New Zealand was a young woman asleep on the sand, curled like a child beneath the moonlight. Though fiercely protective of the haven he had found on this island paradise, Justin was compelled to rescue this mysterious refugee, little realizing she would shatter his peace forever with her defiant courage, her vivid beauty, and the memories she stirred of a past best forgotten. Orphaned, cheated of her inheritance, Emily had sailed halfway around the world to find the man who had promised her father to take care of her; and instead had left her a charity case in an English boarding school. She never dreamed she'd be tossed by the pounding surf practically at his feet, or that she'd find him a disturbingly handsome recluse with the look of a pirate; and a disarming tenderness in his amber-flecked eyes. Confused by conflicting emotions, Emily was determined to make Justin pay for her years of loneliness; with nothing less than his heart.
