James Stewart Thayer, a former attorney turned thriller writer who keeps getting better with every new novel, offers a provocative story about an extraordinary new Hong Kong tower--the Gold Swan of the title--whose success or failure will affect the geopolitical ambitions of the Chinese government and make or break the fortunes of architect John Llewellyn, a maverick in the Frank Gehry tradition whose one-time college roommate is now China's Premier. Meanwhile, former FBI agent Clay Williams, head of security for the project, is approached by intermediaries for a powerful Triad leader whose grandson's kidnapping seems linked to the imminent collapse of the Swan--as well as to the murder of Clay's father. Some readers may want to skim over Thayer's detailed description of the engineering challenges involved in the construction of such an innovative building, but they don't slow down the plot or get in the way of his deft characterizations, especially of Llewellyn. The Gold Swan is a slick, smart read. --Jane Adams

Book Description

As James Thayer's stunning new thriller begins, a self-confident China is about to erect the word's tallest and most dramatic building. It is intended as a celebration of China's 5,000 years of civilization, and the communist government wants to be sure that the new structure cannot be topped, that it will never be topped.

The tower resembles no other structure in the world. It is in the form of the moon in its first quarter, a grand swoop, and its midpoint, which is 1,250 feet above grade, is fully 500 feet off the vertical alignment between top and bottom. Like New York's Seagram Building, it is completely clad in bronze. The tower has razor-sharp convex and concave edges in the shape of a sickle. People prefer, however, to see the structure as resembling a long and graceful swan's neck, with the viewing platforms and restaurants on top as the bronze head. While the official name of the tower is the Fifth Millennium China Tower, Hong Kong citizens have taken to calling it the Gold Swan.

As James Thayer's novel begins, the Gold Swan is nearing completion. The architectural press is almost unanimous: the tower is the eighth wonder of the world. It is bold and magnificent, graceful and lyrical. It is architect John Llewellyn's masterpiece.

And it may be about to collapse.

In a thriller that sends Llewellyn's chief security man, Clay Williams, and Llewellyn's girlfriend, young architect Anne Iverson, plunging into the world of Chinese politics, Thayer spins a knockout yarn in which murder, power, and incalculable amounts of "face" are at stake as Clay and Anne uncover the dreadful truth about Chinese colossal monument to its own past -- and future.

4 out of 5 stars It didn't look interesting..........2006-07-04

I was given this book. I started it and stopped. I wasn't that interested in reading a book about china and building a building. Several months later I picked up the book and began reading. Once I got into the book I became engaged. I began to care about the people and almost identified with them. Would I make those choices? If not...what would happen? I was confounded.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Author.......2003-02-18

I would like to say that I discovered a great new author, but I can only say that I discovered a great author. He is not new, because GOLD SWAN is his 12th book, and I am very unhappy that it took me so long to find him. I do not understand why he has not already been on the bestseller list 12 times.

I was lucky enough to read one of Thayer's WWII novels a few weeks ago. I enjoyed that paperback so much that I immediately went looking for it in hardback, as well as trying to find all the author's other books. I managed to get a new hardback copy of GOLD SWAN, and I immediately read it as fast as I could. It is a wonderful thriller that is almost completely different from the WWII books, except for the outstanding writing.

GOLD SWAN is a marvelous, fast paced story, with many interesting characters. I enjoyed it thoroughly, while learning more about Hong Kong than I did in my 10+ trips there. I love fiction that teaches me things, at the same time that I get a great story. Both of Thayer's books that I have read do that for me, but Gold Swan taught me about Hong Kong, Chinese politics and gangsters, architecture, construction, and police work, and it increased my respect for the work of the CIA. This book was exciting from beginning to end, fun, interesting, educational, and very well written.

I now have 10 more books to look forward to reading.

It is my understanding that the WWII book has been optioned for a movie that should be as exciting as the book, because of the star who is involved. Buy this author's books now, because he will soon be so well known that copies of his old books will be hard to get.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Bit Different.......2003-02-04

James Thayer has managed to create another intriguing, deeply-layered story that takes the reader into a setting foreign to most of us. He transports us into the middle of Hong Kong, China where Clay Williams, chief of security for the architect of the tallest, most beautiful building in the world, acts as narrator and guide.

Clay is an engaging, likeable character who has lived in Hong Kong for ten years while the Gold Swan ( nicknamed for its sickle shape resembling the gentle curve of a swan's neck ) was being built. Through Clay, Thayer is able to describe Chinese society and culture and the glaring differences between their closed society and the freedom of an open society like the United States.

Thayer's ability to successfully compare the two systems within a thrilling mystery and a variety of sub-plots is a testament to his obvious writing talent. As the solution to the mystery is revealed amid the debris of a fallen icon, Thayer's talent as well as the reasons for gratitude for freedoms in the United States becomes readily apparant. The GOLD SWAN is an enjoyable and thought-provoking novel and is highly recommended for those looking for something a little bit different.

4 out of 5 stars This is one of those rare books you are likely to read again.......2002-12-08

The Gold Swan is the nickname of a fabulous building being constructed, fictionally, in present-day Hong Kong --- more precisely, on a man-made island in Hong Kong harbor. The nickname comes from the unique, curving shape its architect has given to the structure, which is best described in the author's own words: "It was the tallest structure ever created by man and made of steel and bronze, those metals that are the very embodiment of solidity and it was a massive thing. Yet it was also slender, with delicate edges and was one long, elegant curve that some architecture critics were calling feminine. It was solid and inert, planted out there in the middle of the harbor, yet it was also soaring, more than seven hundred feet higher than the Peak, reaching skyward in a fluid, rounded motion, touching the clouds. And it was a chameleon, its bronze casing throwing back the gold of the sun and also reflecting images of passing clouds and the restless water of the harbor, endlessly changing as the day unfolded."

Clay Williams is a former FBI man approximately in his 40's. He has been working for ten years in Hong Kong as a security agent for international projects and has been one of three security men on the Gold Swan project from the beginning. Clay's visiting father is killed in a fall from the 20th story balcony of Clay's apartment at the same time that an eleven year-old boy disappears from his next-door neighbor's apartment --- and the plot is set in motion. The Hong Kong police say the father's death is suicide and they plant a couple of ridiculous clues as proof, but Clay knows better. It doesn't take the boy's grandfather long to find Clay and to discern a connection between death and disappearance and, thus, an unlikely but colorful and productive alliance is formed.

Clay is well connected. He has a best friend who is a police officer and he has other friends in the CIA and State Department. He's quiet, capable, thoughtful and
unassuming --- an appealing character whose heroic qualities are present in a muted key. After ten years in Hong Kong, Clay still sees the city with the eyes of a stranger who just happens to know his way around and he shares that vision constantly with us. He also educates us about the changes that have occurred since the British returned Hong Kong to China a few years ago. Ah yes. The plot thickens with those changes. John Llewellyn, architect of the Gold Swan, went to college with the (fictional) leader of China, who of course is based in Beijing; the fabulous building is
a way for Beijing to put its stamp on Hong Kong, to reclaim that city and its international prestige and wealth for the whole of China. Beijing-Hong Kong tension looms large.

Eventually it develops that Clay's father was killed and the little boy was kidnapped as part of a conspiracy surrounding the Gold Swan. It is a conspiracy so huge that, like the building itself, it's hard for the mind to grasp. Clay begins, secretly, to work with the CIA. At the same time, he's working with the boy's grandfather who is in an amazing line of business. He also has his own job to do, as the Gold Swan nears completion. It's a sort of triple-agent scenario that Clay juggles quietly and smoothly, even as he manages to nurture a friendship with a difficult woman.

Thayer handles his large story well, particularly in the way he brings Hong Kong alive on his pages. This is one of those books you can fall into and, when you come out of it, feel as if you've truly spent many hours in another place. It's about as close to a vacation in Hong Kong as most of us will ever get.

The characters, especially the little boy, his friends and his family, are vividly drawn. There are few clichés here -- with the notable exception of a certain henchman of enormous size, who seemed to have come from a Bond movie and whose guardian angel qualities were improbable all around.

The plot unfolds somewhat unevenly, but realistically -- life itself never unfolds at an even pace, particularly around big events; there are always hitches and glitches. This is a thoughtful book best read for the whole scope of what it has to say, not as if it were a print version of a summer blockbuster movie. Tension builds here slowly but inexorably, both in the ever-widening conspiracy surrounding the Gold Swan and in Clay's own personal life. The denouement, when it arrives, is huge, catastrophic and
totally believable.

THE GOLD SWAN is a poignant, sensual read that is likely to stay with you long after you close the pages of the book. It is, in fact, a keeper -- one of those rare books you are likely to want to read again.

5 out of 5 stars How does he do it?.......2002-11-25

This is the fourth James Thayer book I have read, and each one is completely different: different setting, era, professions of main characters, etc. And he does his homework. All of the details are well studied and accurate. I also think he does an excellent job of writing believable female characters. Many male authors of mysteries and thrillers create female characters who are like the male characters but with higher voices and better grooming. Thayer gets the women right.

The Gold Swan is one of those mysteries where the reader can see it coming, but can savor the way the story plays out to the characters. This is very American in its style -- Phillip Margolin writes this way too. Unlike the classic British mystery writers, who like to keep you guessing to the very end (and sometimes beyond).

Thayer also nails the cultural differences between the Chinese and the gweilos (non-Chinese) in the middle of an increasingly tense construction project in Hong Kong.

This book will hold your interest. You may be late for a meal or two while you read to the end of a chapter.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars what a stinker.......2004-03-04

This book was awful, simply awful. I like Diana Palmer, as a rule; in fact that's why I bought the book, to read about The Founding Father of Jacobsville. I wish I hadn't bothered. The wording was clunky and uninspiring, and even the other two stories by different authers weren't that great. My recomendation--don't waste your time. Choose something else.

3 out of 5 stars A Hero's Kiss.......2004-01-08

Pleasant stories and a fun read, but not dynamic. I will donate this book to the library.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn!!!.......2003-12-09

In Diana Palmers story The Founding Father I made myself finish it. There was no passion (very dull and ugly people).Diana's stories are usually about 2 people who can't keep there hands off one another. These barely kissed, he thought she was plain and did'nt change his mind through out the story. Big John never once came close to losing control, even after they married it was weeks before he touched her, then end of story. If this is going to be Diana's new style of writing I'll pass on buying anymore of her books. So if your expecting hot steamy romance I would pass on this book.

5 out of 5 stars three intriguing western romances.......2003-11-27

"The Founding Father" by Diana Palmer. Former Georgian farmer turned Texas rancher Big John Jacobs hopes to persuade New York tycoon Terrance Colby to swing a rail past his spread to expedite the moving of cattle. John offers a business marriage to Terrance's unmarriageable daughter Camilla Ellen. He would receive access to her father while she would gain her freedom, but neither expected love to emerge. This is a solid Tall Texan tale starring an honest hero showcased in an intelligent story line though one must question the change in Camilla from rug rat to heroine.

"Wild West Wager" by Judith Stacy. In 1888 Colorado, saloon owner Jack Delaney does the unthinkable when he becomes the first male to enter the Marlow Tea Room. Jack hires the tearoom co-owner Rebecca Merriweather to decorate his new house so that his eastern company will feel at home. Though she thinks he is bringing his fiancé west, they fall in love. This is a fine lighthearted western romance.

"Snow Maiden" by Mary Burton. In Colorado, business mogul Adam Richmond wants the construction of the new organ to fail because that will badly reflect on the new minister, who he wants to keep away from his sister. He offers the builder Russian emigrant Sophia Petrovnova money to leave town, but she refuses though the cash would enable her to go home. Sophia loves Adam, but knows his heart is colder than her homeland's winters though she had hoped to melt it. Fans will enjoy this warm yet simplistic tale of redemption.

All three intriguing western romances bring to life the late nineteenth century through strong lead couples and fine support cast.

1 out of 5 stars be careful when describing your hero!.......2000-06-06

I just finished How To Kiss A Hero and I really had to work to do that. I just couldn't get the first image I had of the hero out of my mind and, believe me, it wasn't an image I wanted to have etched there permanently. I think an author has to be careful when describing her characters to her audience. In this case, she was describing Brian Boru as this huge man sitting in a chair ordering people to get things for him and all I could think of was JABBA the HUTT in Star Wars. She made him sound so enormous and being barely able to move. And it sounded like he was about eighty-five years old. I really had trouble seeing him as a romantic lead. I know he suffered for his country and all, but come on, it's a romance. After all, it was just one knee wasn't it. Surely he didn't have to hobble like he did. As for Nichola, she was horrendous. She was just plain flighty and stupid. Wanting to be a soldier. And talk about easy. THis was a very advanced for its time school for girls. Like I said, I really had to push to finish this book. I'm not even going to donate this one to the library. I will try to unload it at my yard sale.

5 out of 5 stars Without a Doubt One of the Best Romances I've Ever Read.......2000-05-13

This book is so wonderful. The words seem to reach out of the page and embrace you, and the author makes you care about the characters, and yet it still maintained a light and humorous tone.

The story, incidentally, is about a young woman named Nicole, whose critical mother drops her off at a debutant farm to learn how to be a "lady." Unfortunately, Nicole is hopeless. However, she does find joy in her daily fencing lessons. Eventually, the school hires a rather infamous war hero ("Bullocksing Brown," I believe it was)to teach her the finer points of sword play, and things generally progress from those phallic symbols and onward, until Nicole's younger brother gets wind of the affair, and then the fur begins to fly!

The end was a little murky, not to mention blaringly unrealistic (I thought the main characters' reunion would have been more poignant had it come about without all the kidnapping, etc.), but I still list this book as one of my favorites. A definite keeper!

4 out of 5 stars Great characters distinguish this Regency romance.......2000-04-29

Nichola Hainesworth is eighteen years old and about to be married off by her formidable mother, the Baroness. Nichola, however, has no intention of entering the "marriage market". She realizes that a girl like her, taller than most and only attractive, rather than beautiful, would not exactly be "sought after" by eligible bachelors. Most importantly, Nichola is too intelligent to subject herself to one of the loveless marriages which are so common among her peers. Instead, Nichola wishes to do something important and useful with her life. A true tomboy, she plans to follow the example of her older brothers, and run off to join England's army and fight Napoleon.

However, the Baroness Hainesworth has other ideas for her only daughter. She wishes Nichola to marry, and to marry well. To that end, the Baroness enrolls Nichola in Mrs. Treadwell's Academy for Young Ladies. What the Baroness does not know is that while Mrs. Treadwell's does indeed teach young ladies the "gentle arts", it also strives to help them discover their true selves by allowing them to pursue other subjects not usually taught to young ladies. Some of the students find fulfillment in the sciences, and some in literature. The athletic Nichola develops a passion for fencing. Soon, Nichola's skill surpasses that of her fencing instructor, the scandalous Countess d'Oliveri, who is Mrs. Treadwell's silent partner in the Academy.

Enter Lord Brian Boru. Nichola first encounters Lord Boru at a ball, where she spies the imposing Scotsman lounging indolently in a chair, ordering servants to perform the most mean tasks for him. He is exactly what Nichola despises in the ton, and she wastes no time in letting Lord Boru know what she thinks of him. To her mortification, Nichola later learns that the reason for Lord Boru's lethargy is not laziness, but a crippling war wound. She attempts to apologize at a later meeting with him but is rebuffed, perhaps because Lord Boru dislikes himself as much as Nichola does. Nichola is surprised when Lord Boru, who is a friend of the Countess, appears at the Academy as her new fencing instructor. However, she is intrigued by his considerable fencing skill, and as time goes on, intrigued by the man. As their lessons continue, Nichola and Lord Boru fall in love...

The two lead characters in this book were enchanting. Nichola and Lord Boru are real people - attractive, passionate, emotional, and even have some flaws. I loved that they weren't the usual perfect gods and goddesses that some leads in romance novels can be. Also, I enjoyed the way their love affair helped them to change and grow. In one touching scene, Nichola looks in a mirror after a lesson with Lord Boru, and for the first time, sees herself as a beautiful woman. And it is truly gratifying to see the way that Lord Boru regains his self respect, through his relationship with Nichola.

I have two small quibbles with the book. Although the story was original and interesting up to the commencement of Nichola and Lord Boru's love affair, it ventured into usual Regency fare after that (apparently a lot of women were kidnapped during this era). Also, the narrative was jumpy in some spots, and I had to re-read a few scenes to figure out exactly what was happening (even during a major love scene!). With these qualifications, I enjoyed the book and will definitely buy Ms. Hingston's next novel.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2000-04-23

I admit that in the beginning I could not understand how the hero could possible fall for Nichola. She was tedious, naive, and ill-mannered. Boy, did I grow to like her! She grew so much throughout the story. Lord Brian was equally complex as the tormented hero. He was so large and strong and compelling, and yet so unwilling to accept his affliction.

The pacing of the story was a bit uneven. It would move along nicely and then slow down. Also the additional characters were rather flat. The scandalous Countess, the society matron, the harridan mother(Nichola's), the concerned brother, they could have been more developed. I did like Lord Wallingford though, he was really quite sweet and made me laugh.

Lord Brian and Nichola were great characters and belonged with each other. Good thing they found each other isn't it! KCS

2 out of 5 stars Rush job?.......2007-02-21

This novel is the epitome of "so-so". It's ok. I've read it once and I'm ready to pass it on. Plot development is thin. Character development is thin. This is the equivalent of a writing assgignment being written the night before. Only rap songs have more grammatical errors than this book. I can't sell mine as new because punctuation and grammar errors are marked with yellow highlighter on practically every page!

Romantica (not a spelling error) scenes are unfounded. For all their emoting, the main characters barely know each other and what they find out about each other mostly comes from alternative sources and not each other. But at the end of the day, one doesn't really buy a book like this for its literary pretentions. For the money, there are much better books than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Story on Tropical Planet.......2006-06-12

Jan Springer's "A Hero's Kiss" is a super hot story full of steamy sex on a tropical planet. Piper Hero is on a mission to find her missing brothers on planet Paradise when she crash lands. She wakes up under the sensual spell of Jarod (quite literally) a former sex slave that has sworn off women. Piper wants to find her brothers with or without Jarod's help. Neither can deny their passion for each other. Jan Springer created an interesting world for Paradise, and also the culture of these sex slaves. I'll have to back up and read others in this series. Deservedly so, "A Hero's Kiss" was chosen as a finalist in the Romance Writers of America's Passionate Ink chapter's Passionate Plume contest in the Futuristic/Fantasy/Sci-fi category.

4 out of 5 stars A Hero's Kiss is very hot!.......2005-07-25

US Astronaut Piper Hero is on a mission with her sisters to find their missing brothers on planet Paradise when they are separated in a crash-landing. Not remembering what happened to her immediately after the crash, she awakens to the erotic "fever sex dreams", a poisonous effect from the deadly swampwater she ingested. The cure is administered by Jarod Ellis, a former sex slave who has escaped the torture he has suffered at the hands of the women of Paradise. Jarod doesn't believe this woman is a relative of the men he's protecting, and refuses to help her find them. Piper has no idea what has happened to her sisters, but she is determined to find them, as well as her brothers, with or without Jarod's help.

But Piper is not accustomed to the laws in Paradise, and doesn't realize the dangers of being out on her own in Death Valley, where women are captured and turned into sex slaves. She needs Jarod's help, and can't deny the incredible attraction she feels towards him. Jarod awakens her deepest desires, and unleashes needs in her she never knew existed. But Piper must find her siblings and isn't about to let anyone or anything stand in her way. She takes off through the swamp, alone, unaware of the dangers surrounding her. A near run-in with the Death Valley boys proves to her what could happen to her if she were captured, and how women are treated as property, not as independent individuals. She's reunited with Jarod, but then later both are caught by the Death Valley Boys, and Jarod must challenge them for Piper and win, or she will be their captive, forced into sexual slavery and not free to find her family. Jarod also risks his own freedom and the possibility of being returned as a male sex slave, a life he wants no part of. Is this fiesty independent woman worth risking it all for? But how can he trust her when all he's ever known is pain and torture from women?

Jan Springer writes another heart-pounding erotic story in the Hero series, and writes about some of a woman's most forbidden desires, but never makes them seem crude or shameful. It is HOT, and will leave you breathless on many occasions. Jarod is a very sexy hero with a tormented past, yet hasn't lost his gentle touch or protective instincts in his dealings with women. The idea of being with a man who has been trained in the life of a sex slave and how to make a woman's sexual fantasies come true is an intoxicating image, and will certainly fire up anyone's imagination. While some may be offended by the idea of slavery, and rightfully so, I urge readers to remember this is a work of fiction, and does not condone any forced situations on Piper or Jarod, but is rather used to create an erotic world where not all the slaves feel forced into their roles as captives. I look forward to finding out what happens to Piper's sisters, and hopefully won't have to wait too long.
