5 out of 5 stars Brilliant .......2007-09-02

I am a true Julie Garwood fan. The Clayborne family is by far the best I have read out of all of her books, she seems to astound me with every chapter. But, I do believe The Clayborne Brides was her weakest collection of books, but she still impressed me.
I was disappointed by the obvious rush with the love stories. They all seemed to fall in love quickly with eachother. And I see the arguements above about how that ruined the book. But, what was she suppose to write about? The brothers were all described in previous novels, and if she continued to have the brothers get into trouble throughout the novels, it would just drag on and on. Plus, there were numerous times where to cleverly stated that a few days or weeks had passed.
She did a really great job by making us fall in love with not only Harrison but all of the brothers as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great light reading.......2007-08-27

Even though I'd read this book several years ago, I still couldn't put it down. A great story line with very interesting characters. Can't wait to read the sequel stories again, too.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-04-10

I usually really like Garwood but this book which is three stories in one book is very disapointing. The first and the last brothers' stories seemed forced.

5 out of 5 stars More of the Claybornes from "For the Roses".......2007-02-22

It was so nice to get to read about Douglas, Travis, and Adam. I had wondered about Cole until I saw that there was still "Come the Spring" to tell about Cole and more about Daniel Ryan who was introduced in these. The only thing I could find wrong with this book was that each story was too short :) I know that they had to be shorter to fit all three in one book, but I wish they each had their own novel! :) Other than that I thought these books were all great just as I think every single book Julie Garwood has written was great. I don't think she'll ever write a bad book - she's just not capable of it!

3 out of 5 stars The Claybourne Brothers.......2003-08-26

This book is three short stories in one. It is best to read "For the Roses" before you read these books, so that you understand the Claybourne family better.

"ONE PINK ROSE" is the story of Travis Claybourne. Travis is sent by Mama Rose to pick up Emily Finnegan, and deliver her to her groom, O'Toole. Emily is a headstrong girl, who Travis finds difficult to understand, yet intriguing to know more of. While I enjoyed this first book, I did not feel that I really got to know either Travis or Emily. Travis was the one brother in "For the Roses" that I never felt got as much attention as the others. I was hoping for a little more insight into his character, other than his liking of debate and "The Republic," which was already explored to some extent in "For the Roses." Overall, this book rates, in my opinion, a 3/5 stars.

"ONE WHITE ROSE" is the story of Douglas Claybourne, the quiet brother. Douglas bought an Arabian horse six months prior, and finally has time to go collect the animal. When he arrives at the home of Parker Grant, he finds Isabel Grant, his wife, giving birth. Soon, Douglas discovers that Parker Grant has died, and Isabel is being harassed by the town bully. The ultimate reason for the harassment of the bully is a surprise, and I won't give it away here. By far, Douglas' story was the best of these three. I felt that Isabel and Douglas got to know each other, and truly fell in love. It seems that Julie Garwood took an extra liking to Douglas, and focused more on his story. I give this book a 4/5 stars.

Finally, "ONE RED ROSE" the story of Adam Claybourne, the head of the Clayborne family. This story was a complete disappointment. I had expected more from this courageous leader, then a story not worth the effort to read. I knew and respected Adam more when I first met him in "For the Roses." I hope one day, Julie revisits this tale, and improves it greatly. Just skip reading this one. 0/5 stars.

If you are a fan of the Claybournes (as most Julie fans are) this series is a must have. Read tibits of Adams' story. Douglas' story is worth the effort.

THE ROSE RED BRIDE by Claire Delacroix
January 22, 2006

This is the 2nd book in the trilogy that began with THE BEAUTY BRIDE. Set in Scotland in the 1400's, each book focuses on a different person in a family that had lost their parents a few years previous and brother Alexander is now Laird of Kinfairlie. The first book had the oldest sister, Madeleine, married off via an auction. This second book has Alexander asking "Nicholas" to take the next oldest sister, Vivienne, to bed, and then supposedly having them marry the following morn. What happens instead is that Nicholas is really not who he says he is, but is really the brother, Erik. Nicholas had been a suitor that Vivienne had spurned before, and Erik came for Vivienne, knowing of this fact. Instead of marrying Vivienne, he steals her away and finally tells her his story, of how he was left for dead and his wife had gone missing. He had two young children living with Nicholas, and Erik needed to save them from whatever fate Nicholas had in mind for them. As Vivienne has already fallen in love with Erik, she is willing to trust him and decides she will help him regain his rightful place at Blackleith, save his children, and hopes that Erik will fall in love with her and eventually marry her.

I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first one. I think these books are enjoyable when read in the right frame of mind. They are historical romances, and I think period pieces are not for everyone. I do find that Delacroix does a great job writing these historical romances and I hope to read her third book in this series (The Snow White Bride).

5 out of 5 stars another great Kinfarlie saga.......2005-07-29

Once again Claire Delacroix has ceated another 'can't put it down till I'm done book'. I won't repeat the story line as others have done so beautifully and I do think the book is a five but I must mention a couple of things. It seemed the story was cruising along and suddenly it just wrapped right up without much ado. Things could have been a little more graphic or 'something'? Also I was quite disappointed with Tynan and Roseamunds story line towards the end of the book. Not to despoil it but what the heck happened there? Does anyone else out there think they will return somehow in book 3 or is that just wishful thinking on my part? I did so adore them as a couple and I have to know what became of them and that dratted "Darg". I guess that's what keeps us waiting for the next instalment.

5 out of 5 stars Original - A Wonderful Addition to a Marvelous Trilogy.......2005-06-03

Setting - Kinfairlie, coast of Scotland, 1421 --- In the second installment of the Jewels of Kinfairlie, Alexander, laird and brother of five sisters, is continuing his quest to marry off the two oldest sisters while pondering the fate of Kinfairlie's ability to manage over the winter. Having successfully married Madeline the eldest, Vivienne the second eldest was proving to be a more difficult challenge. Now as luck would have it a man claiming to be Nicholas Sinclair, a former suitor of Vivienne's, came to Kinfairlie not only requesting the hand of Vivienne but offering a pouch full of silver along with a condition that Alexander was finding totally objectionable. Nicholas wanted to BED THE BRIDE before the marriage took place! With severe misgivings and the fate of Kinfairlie weighing in the balance, Alexander agreed believing the man's word of honor that the wedding would take place the very next day. Alexander was convinced of the man's honorable intentions and believing Vivienne would be pleased with what he believed was her former suitor, he came up with a plan to meet the suitors demands. Unfortunately, this would be the second time Alexander's best intentions for wedding his sisters would fail miserably.

Knowing his sister Vivienne's predilection for adventure, Alexander that evening told a tale that was designed specifically to entice Vivienne into innocently sealing her own fate. Thinking that she would be meeting the man of her dreams Vivienne crept to the tower room that night ready to meet her destiny, a mystical `fairy' lover. Into the darkness a hooded lover crept thru the tower window and commenced to making slow sweet love to Vivienne. Unfortunately the morning light revelations would shatter her dreams. The dream lover turned out to be Erik Sinclair, older brother of Nicholas and his intentions did not include marriage, unless Vivienne could deliver him a son!

-- In a wonderfully ORIGINAL sequel to THE BEAUTY BRIDE, Claire Delacroix has fashioned an exciting action packed sensual romance. Our heroine, Vivienne was absolutely marvelous having every right to throw a HUGE hissy fit the next day when she discovered her `fairy lover' was no fairy and had taken her maidenhead with no immediate plans of marrying her! Instead, she was ready to go along with a hand-fast, believing deeply that the sweet loving person she laid with was truly the person that was hidden beneath the tortured and scarred warrior she discovered in the morning. Jam-packed with lively characters (such as Darg the impish spriggan and Elizabeth the youngest sister who was the only one to see and hear the naughty fairy), the author delivers non-stop action, amusing scenarios, and some poignantly loving reunions. This is Delacroix at her very magical best penning in the medieval / fantasy genre where in my opinion she simply shines! I am eagerly looking forward to the last of this trilogy when the two sisters team up to give their brother, Laird Alexander his well-earned comeuppance! [Marilyn, for www.romancedesigns.com]

5 out of 5 stars fine medieval romance.......2005-06-01

In 1421 Scotland, Alexander, Laird of Kinfairlie, feels euphoric about his marriage auction that worked so well in spite of the objection of the bride, Madeline the oldest of his sisters. Alexander blithely ignores all that went wrong as he keeps thinking all's well that ends well as Madeline, who previously refused to marry, is happily wedded to Rhys Fitzhenry.

The successful brotherly matchmaker turns to Vivienne though Alexander plans to improve the process since the Madeline caper (see THE BEAUTY BRIDE). He thinks he found the solution when Nicholas Sinclair, the man who broke Vivienne's heart years ago, arrives to court his beloved as he can offer a home since his older brother Erik has been disowned. Nicholas insists he bed her in her tower where she awaits his return so that she has no choice but to marry as he needs a bride and heir rather quickly to deflect any estate challenges. Rationalizing he needs the coins for the other sisters, Alexander agrees. Vivienne and her beau enjoy the night together until morning light reveals cynical Erik as her mate and he insists she will begat him a legitimate heir.

Though similar in design to the first Kinfairlie medieval romance, THE ROSE RED BRIDE has a flavor of its own because Vivienne and Madeline have different personalities. The story line is fun due to Erik's denials that he loves her while vivacious Vivienne believes they were destined together, but rejects his cold insistence that she is an heir breeder. Fans will enjoy Alexander's latest matrimonial fiasco and look forward to the next jewel Snow White in the fall.

Book Description

The Claybornes are back -- and love is in bloom! First introduced in Julie Garwood's magnificent New York Times bestseller For the Roses, which inspired the Hallmark Hall of Fame television film Rose Hill, the Clayborne brothers of Blue Belle, Montana, have been embraced by millions worldwide. Now Julie Garwood spins the individual stories of these three spirited brothers -- once a mismatched gang of street urchins -- in a trio of special novels that continues with One Red Rose.

Adam Clayborne has always put great stock in the power of books. As an escaped slave -- and a wanted man -- reading has been his only ticket to the wonders of distant lands. Adam is content with his life as a confirmed bachelor, which is why his Mama Rose has summoned the irresistible Genevieve Delacroix to Montana. Also a former slave, Genevieve shares his dream of seeing the world, but she arrives to find Adam unfailingly polite...and just as distant. Undaunted, Genevieve determines to teach Adam what he'll never learn from a book -- that true freedom only comes when you open your heart.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars One Red Rose.......2006-12-31

ISBN 0671010107 - There seems to be a few reviewers here who expected - or hoped for - more than a shallow romance novel in One Red Rose and were disappointed. Since I think all romance novels are shallow romance novels, no disappointment here! Let's get the negatives out of the way first: the West (as opposed to today's "the west") is often said, historically speaking, to have been more open-minded about race, hard work and honesty being more important than color. However... the fact that race was an absolute NON-issue in this book was a little hard to accept. I admit I haven't yet read any of the others in the series, so perhaps they covered that sort of ground and Garwood didn't want to beat the topic to death. Still, the book only had two clues to the fact that the characters were black. One was the reference to a couple people being former slaves and since not all slaves were black, that was kind of vague. The other was when Genevieve was asked to pose as Ruby Leigh Diamond, formerly Alice O'Reilly, and she pointed out that her ancestors came here from Africa, "Surely you noticed."

That aside, romance novels are generally fluff, and this one is no more or less fluffy than any other I've read. Adam Clayborne lives in a now-empty house on the family ranch in Montana. His brothers have married and moved away and Mama Rose has it in mind to get Adam married, too. She's even picked the woman out for him, AND invited her to the ranch for the family celebration of Mama Rose's birthday. Genevieve is beautiful enough, but Adam is happy as a bachelor. Luckily for him, she doesn't want to marry him, either. Or so she says - but she says a lot of things that aren't true. For one thing, she says she's not in trouble. If that were true, why does she run off when a telegram arrives, without even saying good-bye? Adam is determined to find out and chases after her.

Standard romance novel ending, with the usual formula along the way. One highlight (or disappointment, depending on why you read this genre) was the lack of heaving and aching, et al, that generally takes up several pages and makes it possible for the author to get away with less storytelling work. Sadly, that took One Red Rose out of the running for my "worst line in the world" contest. There was a funny moment to me when, having run away into the woods with a night's lead at least, Genevieve is caught up to by Adam. She cuddles up against him and the line "She smelled so good to him..." cracked me up. A full day of riding hard to get away and she smells good? Please.

IF I come across another book by Garwood, I'll read it because I'll read anything, but I wouldn't expend any energy trying to find the rest of this series.

2 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2006-08-07

Actually, I gave this book 2 Stars only because I think that Ms. Garwood's heart is in a good place. This book is futuristic...it is where we hope we'll be at sometime in the future. We are not there yet and we certainly weren't there in the 19th century.
I also felt quite cheated with this book. I was so looking forward to reading about Adam's story and it could have been an awesome and insightful read. I do hope that some other author will "borrow" this idea and do a better job with it. Or maybe Ms. Garwood will revisit and revise the whole series. I don't know that there is a way to present the black experience as it was in the 19th century, In a light and fluffy format but it is most insulting to have it be totally glossed over. Tho to Ms. Garwood's credit, there is nothing light and fluffy about abandoned children in that era either and she did do an adequate job of making you laugh with them.
I know that I am not really reviewing the book, but really folks there is nothing to review. The book is that shallow and unfulfilling. There was a moment of laughter tho: The black heroine was actually explaining to these most respectful white men with guns (they actually called her "miss" and this set in Texas)that she could not be named O'Malley (think that was the name) as that name was Irish and she is not Irish as her ancestors were from Africa. Oh My Gawd!!! LOL! That was how unbelievable the book was.
I have started reading Cole's story... Started reading it 2 days ago and still in the second chapter. It already makes me feel tired. Can't wait for Mary Balogh Simply Love to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Julie Garwood is awsome.......2003-01-27

Her books are awsome! She is one of the top romance writter in my book I have read 17 of Julie Garwood's novels and she astounds me every time I read a new one. I suggest if you want to read this book start with the book "For the Roses" then go onto read "One Pink Rose", "One white Rose", and "One Red Rose" and then read "Come the Spring" These books are all about the Claybourne family and how they strived to survive raising an abandoned baby that they found in New York and turning her into a lady. After their little Mary Rose is grown up and Married to a highland Lawyer named Harrison each brother is tempted by women into settling down will the brothers run or face the destiny that MAMA Rose tricks them into.

3 out of 5 stars One Red, one pink and one white rose........2003-01-23

I thoroughly enjoyed For The Roses- and went straight to the library to find these 3 smaller books. Their length did not bother me. But they seemed a little shallow. I did enjoy the story for One White Rose the best out of the 3. The others were silly and unrealistic, especially One Red Rose. The story for Adam- a black African American but the 1800's was too unrealistic for me to enjoy. I do think the idea of the 3 smaller books was a great idea, though!

4 out of 5 stars A light enjoyable summer read.......1997-06-13

Adam Clayborne is a loner who likes his life just the way it is. However, he does not got a prayer of keeping it that way when he crosses paths with the beautiful Genevieve Perry, who he finds lying in his bed. She is his mother's choice to become Adam's bride, but when she makes it plain to Adam that she cannot marry him, Adam goes berserk. When Genevieve sneaks off in the middle of the night, Adam hunts her down, only to discover that she is running away from three men who want to hurt her. .....The Clayborne protective nature is aroused in Adam with a ferocity that astounds even him. He vows no harm will come to his lovely lady, even if it means fighting the vermin who are after her by himself. It is when Adam sees Genevieve in a situation that could leave her dead, that he realize how deep his feelings for her truly go. .....This is the last of the three novellas starring the Clayborne siblings and just like the two previous tales (ONE PINK ROSE AND ONE WHITE ROSE), ONE RED ROSE is an exquisite treat for the senses. Julie Garwood delivers an entertaining and fun filled tale that will satisfy her myriad of fans. She also brilliantly sets the stage for her next full length novel (due out in December), starring the last Clayborne brother Cole and this relationship with the mysterious Marshall that has starred in the three novellas. ....Harriet Klausner

On the run from an abusive ex-husband, Susanna Wright winds up in the town of Red Rose, or, more precisely, outside of town in loner Brady Malone's front yard when her car breaks down. Haunted by past mistakes, Brady at first opts to have little to do with Susanna and her baby daughter Grace. But he is a protector by nature, and slowly finds himself more and more involved with them both, drawn by attraction and admiration he can't deny. His noble qualities also set Susanna on the course of rehabilitating his reputation in the eyes of some of the more judgemental townsfolk. But it takes a confrontation with the deranged ex-husband to bring things to the decision point--can Susanna convince Brady he is truly her "white knight," instead of the failure he thinks he is?

Pregnant and alone, landscaper Abby Chesney has decided she needs a husband, someone solid, reliable, interested in friendship rather than romance, and willing to be a good father to her baby.
Definitely not someone like divorced business magnate Griffin O'Dell, whose own failures at love have convinced him to shun marriage and concentrate his affection on his four-year-old son Casey, with whom he gets to spend only part of the year.
But when Griffin hires Abby, both find that their hearts want a love their minds have ruled out as impossible. When Griffin's ex-wife threatens his growing relationship with Casey, both Griffin and Abby must confront feelings that are surprisingly powerful.
This is a remarkably good story despite its rather formulaic-sounding plot; it showcases a love that's willing to give whether it gets anything back or not.

            Book Description

A classic love story by bestselling author Sandra Brown, where betrayal is only a heartbeat away from desire, and love can be found in the most unexpected places.

Stevie Corbett is in jeopardy of losing everything she's sacrificed and worked so hard for -- her career, her reputation, her future. Her life. Now she has just two weeks to make a monumental decision, but her fate rides on keeping the truth a secret.

Judd Mackie's job is to uncover secrets. He's spent the past few years trailing Stevie, determined to expose her as the spoiled glamour girl he believes her to be. Then a chance meeting with Stevie offers him the story he's been dreaming of.

He's waited years for an opportunity like this to fall into his lap. Now he has the chance to scoop the story of the year and let the whole world know the truth about Stevie. All he needs to do is betray her trust . . .

            From the back cover:

Her life is on the line...

Stevie Corbett is in jeopardy of losing everything she's sacrificed and worked so hard for--her career, her future. Her life. She has just two weeks to make a monumental decision, but her fate rides on keeping the truth a secret.

It's Judd Mackie's job to uncover secrets. And he's spent the last few years dogging Stevie, exposing her for the spoiled glamour girl he believe's her to be. And my review:

Sandra Brown has written some good books, but this one (previously published under the pseudonym Erin St. Clare) shows its age. It's obvious that this author got better with practice (as most authors do).

The sexual chemistry is well written, but that's about it. I never really felt like I knew these characters on a deeper level. Stevie is a woman who's life revolves around her career and who may now lose everything she's worked for because she may have cancer. Judd is a jaded rake. That was about it. I wanted to know who these two were; why they should be together. Great sex isn't enough of a reason.

What really didn't make sense was why he would be so quick to protect her, especially after spending years making fun of her in his newspaper column. Keeping the truth of her tumors off-the-record? Okay, maybe I can swallow that. But that he'd sneak her away from the press and spirit her away to the home he inherited from his grandparents? That's a bit much. If it had been later in the book, after he'd started to soften towards her, it might have made more sense. But not when they were still practically enemies.

I just never felt like there was anything but sex between these two. Their constant bickering was a big drawback. And Judd's chauvanistic comments got VERY irritating after a while. I know it's supposed to be a joke, but his constant comments of "cook my breakfeast, woman" or "bring me coffee, woman" were really not funny. Maybe they were in the 80s (this book was originally published in 1989), but they aren't so funny today. It didn't matter that the author kept stating how physically attractive Judd was. His neanderthal attitude made him extremely unattractive as a person, and I just couldn't cheer for the heroine to be with him.

And one other weird thing: the heroine had a strange attraction to the hero's armpits. Seriously. She would notice his armpits and start to get turned on by the sight. This happened more than once. It was very weird. Who finds armpits sexy, anyway? Especially when they're all sweaty from the guy doing manual labor. Reading that was a big turn-off. It was certainly not something to put me in a romantic mood.

The majority of 80s romances don't age well, no matter who the author is. You might enjoy this if you're a hard-core fan of Sandra Brown's and are determined to read her entire backlist. Otherwise, pick up one of her newer books.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling Writer, Thrilling Book,.......2003-10-05

I loved this thrilling story and look forward to more books by this thrilling writer in the very near future. Thrilling writer, thrilling book!

3 out of 5 stars Another sweet romance, quick read.......2003-04-29

Stevie Corbett is a professional tennis player with an emergency health problem that could possibly keep her from playing in the tennis match of a life time- the Wimbledon! She must decide whether to risk her health for the opportunity to play, this being the thing that she has strived for all her life- the ultimate goal to reach. Judd Mackie, sports writer, is out to find out what Stevie is hiding from her fans- to write that article that his editor is hounding him for. Both Stevie and Judd have pasts of hurt that they have not healed from- not allowing themselves to have relationships with others. That's about to change. But they are about to find strong desire for love from each other. Sweet story that will take no longer than an afternoon.

2 out of 5 stars No Thrill In this Victory.......2003-03-12

This is the most unrealistic senario I have ever read. A journalist spends a lifetime making fun of a tennis star. Then all of a sudden get a conscience when she has a tumor. Then this same journalist spirited her away from press. Not only is the plot plausible at best. but for the sex scenes this is a very boring book...

4 out of 5 stars GOOD STORY, QUICK READ.......2001-01-31

I really liked this book because although it was a quick read, the characters were good and the story was interesting.

            Book Description

Adventure racing is an exciting and fast-growing sport that combines nonstop, action-packed challenges such as trail running, mountain biking, orienteering, rock climbing, trekking, whitewater swimming, and paddling in some of the world's most beautiful-and most challenging- places. Races last from just a few hours to two weeks, and are filled with passion, drama, sleep-deprivation, hallucinations, blisters, cramps, exhaustion-and inevitably great stories.

The Thrill of Victory, the Agony of My Feet contains over thirty first-person adventure racing stories that will take you from the leech-infested jungles of Borneo to the snow-capped peaks of Tibet to races near you.You will be entertained and inspired as you read how athletes-from beginner to expert-overcame enormous odds, physical limitations, raging storms, equipment failure, personal fears, and in one case, even the tragic death of a competitor. These stories are as close as you can get to adventure racing without getting your feet wet.

Neal Jamison is the author of Running Through the Wall. Nic Stover and Maureen Moslow-Benway are adventure-racing competitors and journalists.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories of real adventure.......2005-11-01

I've seen adventure racing on TV (Eco Challenge, Primal Quest, etc.). And those shows always concentrate on the drama, the beautiful people, and so on. This book, however, shows what adventure racing is all about. The 30 stories in this book are all from people who love the sport of adventure racing and have dedicated a part of their lives to the sport that they love.

There are stories from seasoned veterans and beginners -- all of which demonstrate how we can overcome great odds to reach the finish line. The lessons learned from these athletes will help athletes and non athletes alike. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring read.......2005-06-15

I was originally turned on by the book "Becoming an Ironman" as I was training for my own first Ironman. This book had the same effect on me. The stories by the different athletes repeat similar tales of pain, adventure, pain, beautiful scenery, pain, and all-out efforts, but they also report another common experience that extends beyond that of individual sports: the rewards of developing team relationships that come from depending so completely upon each other during such a difficult event. The book does a great job of describing this exciting sport.
