Book Description
As a first-hand account of the weird mysteries and horrors of voodoo, Tell My Horse is an invaluable resource and fascinating guide. Based on Zora Neale Hurston's personal experiences in Haiti and Jamaica, where she participated as an initiate rather than just an observer of voodoo practices during her visits in the 1930s, this travelogue into a dark world paints a vividly authentic picture of ceremonies and customs and superstitions of great cultural interest.
Customer Reviews:
Great but dated.......2004-01-01
A highly influential book on vodou in its day and worth buying still as an historical document, but now rather dated in terms of information. A good book to accompany this would be Vodou Shaman by Ross Heaven, which brings the whole subject area truly up to date.
Really entertaining !!.......2003-03-20
The writing of Zora Neale Hurston is fine. The content of the book is, in his second part, is a "first hand" experience of what voodoo was in 1930. This is therefore a classical and valuable source of knowledge. Interesting enough, Zora Neale Hurston took probably part at various voodoo initiations, and we would have been interested to know more about her experiences, feelings, philosophical and religious insights. Unfortunately for us, she respected the "secret de l'arcane" which characterizes most of the so called esoteric societies. There is also hope for Haïti in this book, but it demonstrates also the power of USA to bring some kind of mismatch in the political affairs and economic life of a poor and very small country. Abobo!
Engaging reading, fantastic stories.......2002-11-20
Reading this book is like travelling along with Ms. Neale Hurston as she explores life in Haiti. You will meet fanscinating and intriguing people. The practices and beliefs are explained in just enough detail to make you feel like you were there, but all the mystery is retained as even the author is unable to explain or understand the depth of experience and strength of beliefs held by the native Haitians. Finding non-fiction that reads like a novel is a rare and wonderful treasure.
Interesting, but not a real ethnography.......2001-10-05
Make no mistake, this is a travelogue, not an ethnography in the traditional sense. Hurston, who was a voodoo priestess of a high order herself, was too immersed in the culture to really view it objectively, which is necessary for any anthropologist. That said, it's still a very interesting read and certainly emphasizes the fact that voudon is a valid religion and not a set of superstitions. However, I'm puzzled as to why Ismael Reed (himself an accomplished writer) is listed as a credit. Did he write the introduction? Because he didn't write this book. Hurston wrote it. She traveled to Haiti by herself in the 30s to investigate this. It was not written by Reed.
It Will Change Your Reality.......2000-10-08
If this book was fiction I would call it one of the most imaginative books I have ever read, but it's real. It is scary, unbelievably deep, and true. A wonderful anthropological gathering of stories, ceremonies , and everyday life. Let me wash my face with Jalapeno rum if I'm not telling the truth about this book being great. You can tell my horse.

What ever happened to beauty? Since the late 1960s she seems to have been in exile. Postmodern artists traded her in for flirtations with truth, strength, and purity of form. It was then that women started stripping off their heavy makeup and Barbie doll clothing in an effort to gain equal footing with men. And men, anxious too to break some of society's molds, shed their business suits and leisurewear--then the paragons of male beauty. But as art critic Dave Hickey unwittingly predicted during the '80s, that quality--which Plato believed to be eternal and absolute--is the "issue of the '90s."
After three decades of playing wallflower because she was thought by many artists to be frivolous, easy, tired, and even shallow, beauty is dancing again. Uncontrollable Beauty is filled with exciting essays by artists, critics, curators, and philosophers whose definitions of this elusive quality are often at odds with the Platonic ideal. When beauty besets critic Peter Schjeldahl, his mind is "hyperalert," his body eases, and he is often aware of his "shoulders coming down as unconscious muscular tension lets go." Renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois also experiences beauty as opposed to encountering it: "Beauty is a series of experiences. It is not a noun ... beauty in and of itself does not exist." Artist and coeditor Bill Beckley blames beauty's banishment on Wittgenstein--who, in a 1938 lecture at Cambridge, said that beauty is most often meant as an interjection "similar to Wow! or rubbing one's stomach"--and his undue influence on conceptual artists of the '60s and '70s. Each essay collected here is rigorous in its definition of this elusive yet powerful force in art and aesthetics. Taken together, the writings are an invigorating read for artists and viewers alike.
Book Description
In 1998, a prestigious group of artists, critics, and literati offered in a single collection their incisive reflections on the question of beautypast, present, and future. This esteemed collection of essays, entitled Uncontrollable Beauty, provoked debates about beauty in art and culture, arousing widespread curiosity and stimulating passionate discussion that helped to usher in a new era of appreciation for beauty in art. In response to the enduring popularity and acclaim for this anthology, Allworth Press has just published a paperback edition of Uncontrollable Beauty, edited by Bill Beckley and David Shapiro.

An excellent book.......2005-07-25
The role of beauty in contemporary art has become a hot topic and this compilation of writings and interviews presents a group of well written and well considered perspectives. I've just finished it and am re-reading many of the essays, as I consider them cogent and inspirational.
A refreshing antidote to the dilemna of today.......2001-05-02
UNCONTROLLABLE BEAUTY: Toward a New Aesthetic is easily some of the most beautiful writing I've ever encountered. Editor Beckley ( who also writes well) has selected poets, critics, painters, sculptors, philosophers to write about where we place Beauty on the scale of art importance in the past thirty years. The very fact that this issue is being addressed bodes well for those of us who have been concerned about recent past trends in art of all forms. Being ugly, controversial, in your face, violent, frivolous, mocking, sadistic has been the criteria for what gets press and thus what the public is spoon-fed as what is "in". So many of us tire of these stale and selfish agendas which don't seem to have a life much past the opening of the show that features them. But why did we get that way? Is there a possibility that we have become so overinformed as to how to see that that most sacred aspect of creativity - beauty - has become a dinosaur? Accordingly to lyrically beautiful essays the answer is a decided "No!". Almost every way of describing beauty, feeling beauty, thinking beauty, seeking beauty is given in this eloquent book. This is not always easy reading.....but there is beauty in making the effort, too. Bravo and welcome back to the age of hope!

Warnings-they're everywhere. On toys. On hair dryers. On compact discs. On take-out coffee cups. Almost everything for sale today comes with a warning. Why? Now, most people have enough common sense not to take a bath with an electric blender, but thanks to a few morons out there who sued big companies and won huge settlements, products now come with warnings that treat consumers like a bunch of slack-jawed yokels. So here's a collection of more than a hundred of the most ridiculous real warning labels on today's products. For example:CAUTION: DO NOT ON USE THIS HAMMER TO STRIKE ANY SOLID OBJECT.Such as, perhaps, the head of the idiot who came up with this warning in the first place? In addition, the book includes two dozen hilarious peel-off fake warning labels you can stick on real products to keep you, your friends, and your loved ones safe. Just don't read this book while driving a car or operating heavy machinery.
Customer Reviews:
Who knew lawyers could be so much fun?.......2007-09-19
The world is being run by lawyers, and the world is also full of potential litigious morons who spread contraceptive jelly on toast, drive with opened cups of hot coffee between their legs, and spray extra-hold hair spray directly into their eyes. Then, they are surprised by the negative results.
Therefore, companies now find it actually necessary to warn us not to eat lemon colored paint, beware that jumbo sized fireplace logs might catch on fire, and that we should be sure to remove the baby before folding up the baby stroller.
Bonus: There are dozens of great self-sticking warning labels of great comedic value in the book as well.
Warning: Do not stick them in your eye.
Disseminates urban legends as factual.......2007-02-05
I'd had high hopes for this as a humorous source book for use in teaching caution and warning labels.
However, before incorporating material from this book, I'm glad I checked the credibility on Snopes; warning label stories cited in the book include false, proven urban legends.
It's a shame that the book doesn't come with a warning label: "CAUTION: Contents may be fictional".
Funny But Could be Better.......2004-02-14
It may be near impossible to get a comprehensive healthcare bill through congress, but the number of idiots around forced them to pass a law requiring a warning label about using hair driers in the shower. It's a crazy world.
This book shows many funny and intriguing warning labels as well as some of the stories behind them (why can't we remove the mattress tag?).
Wry wit and cynicism attach these labels we take for granted (and seldom read). But I could not help think that some of the observations missed the mark a little. For instance a hair dryer has a label saying not to use it in the shower or while sleeping but fails to mention the bathtub (does that mean it is ok to use it in the tub?).
But still, this is a fun book to read alone or with friends. The book even comes with a section of fake warning labels that you can apply anywhere.
Hilarious and REAL !!!!!!!.......2001-05-02
This book contains actual warning labels from a variety of products
Nowadays with the number of lawsuits by inept consumers injured by certain products, manufacturers are forced to put "idiot-proof" warning labels on their products.
Contains information about the famous McDonald's coffee incident and subsequent lawsuit.
For when you're having a bad day.......2000-12-29
You can't help but laugh out loud at this book. These real warnings were printed to help companies avoid lawsuits from people who think they're supposed to drink facial cleanser. How could people be so stupid?! Well, sometimes they are, and even stupider warnings try to prevent idiotic behavior. The commentary and pictures with the warnings make this book even more hilarious.
The stickers are cheesy and stupid, but that doesn't detract from the book. It's funny read from cover to cover. But, if you need a quick pick-me-up, just flip to a random page for a laugh.

IN JANUARY, 1995, SKULL AND BONE FRAGMENTS OF 64-YEAR-OLD LAS VEGAS MULTI-MILLIONAIRE, RON RUDIN, WERE DISCOVERED IN A REMOTE AND ROCKY RAVINE ALONG LAKE MOHAVE.... He'd been shot at least four times in the head, decapitated, and set on fire. Who could have turned on the ambitious real-estate ace with such bloodthirsty fury? Even before the remains were found, circumstantial evidence was building against Rudin's tempestuous 52-year-old wife, Margaret, who stood to inherit a handsome share of her husband's fortune. Rudin's friends also suspected Margaret, and Rudin himself had thought that his wife was trying to poison him when he was alive. Then a chilling caveat was discovered in Rudin's living trust: that should he die under violent circumstances, an investigation should be conducted. By the time authorities closed in on Margaret Rudin, she'd disappeared. It would take two-and-a-half years to hunt the Black Widow down, and to discover the cold-blooded secrets at the heart of a poisonous marriage....BUT VENGEANCE WOULD COME-FROM THE GRAVE.... Now, reporter Michael Fleeman delivers a startling glimpse into the mind of a woman who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted as she drove the man who had promised to love and honor her to secretly fear her. Fleeman also details the relentless pursuit of justice that would lead authorities from the glamorous faade of Las Vegas to a squalid apartment on the outskirts of Boston to hold the remorseless wife accountable for her shocking and unfathomable crimes.

bad, very bad.......2006-03-28
I don't understand the previous reviews. the plot was unbelievable. the charactors stiff and had only one diminsion. It was all about sex. Not love. I would have given it no stars if that choice was possible.
Give me a glass of water!.......2005-08-05
Holy Cow this book was hot! I loved the set up of the book, but the characters are what really make it a 5 star for me! Okay, let's be honest, the love scenes are what make it a 5 star book for me. I read this on a plane on my way home and almost jumped my husband the second I walked in the door. This book is not one you're going to want to put down once you pick it up, so choose your reading time wisely. . .
An excellent, exciting read!
Hot, Hot, Hot!.......2005-06-29

Great introduction to attachment disorder and its treatment........1999-05-02
This is a very readable book for parents and clinicians. Clearly outlines what attachment disorder is and describes holding therapy. Cline speaks eloquently of the societal issues that combine to result in children who are seriously disturbed. Challenges treament providers to evaluate current methodology that is often ineffective with these children. Provides information about treatment that is effective with many seriously disturbed children. First printed in 1995, it is timely reading given our nation's current epidemic of violent, conscienceless children and adults.

Sadistic Pop Psychotherapy.......2007-04-05
Cline formerly entitled this book "Conscienceless Acts, Societal Mayhem" (1995). That book apparently got too much deserved bad publicity. Cline, a founder of Attachment Therapy (aka Holding Therapy, Rage Reduction, etc.), is still promoting this brutal, unvalidated fringe psychotherapy inflicted on foster and adopted children.
Says Cline:
"...this therapy helps them form [attachment] by purposely recapitulating the first-year-of-life experiences. This is not easy for lay people and even professionals to watch, for what the practitioner is doing is actually pushing (provoking) the client to feel helpless and hopeless, like a baby, by holding the client and making him uncomfortable. The result is that the client goes into a rage. However, this rage is not the simple screaming of an infant -- the child yells, strikes out, tries to bite, sulks, curses, threatens, struggles, and kicks before finally submitting to the therapist's authority."
Coercive restraint used in this matter is technically a form of torture.
Cline's methods are denounced by the American Psychological Association's Division on Child Maltreatment as inappropriate for all children (see the journal *Child Maltreatment* Feb 2006). Use of Attachment Therapy and its parenting meathods are considered grounds for child welfare workers to investigate for suspected child abuse.
It says a lot about the Love and Logic Institute (founded by Cline with Jim Fay) that they are still promoting these extremely abusive practices.
A promising solution.......2003-12-28
Uncontrollable kids is a book not only for desperate parents but social workers, doctors, nurses, therapists, teachers, legislators- anyone who wishes to effectively change the nationwide chaos created by "unattached" children. Foster Cline passionately describes an overwhelming social dilemma caused by drug abusing or neglecting parents whose children are left unable to feel guilt or remorse. Unattached children grow to become unfeeling, irresponsible adults or more even callous criminals. Cline mentions Ted Bundy as an extreme example of the "lack of bonding" between birth and two years of age. He describes the social programs and welfare systems that perpetuate unattached family cycles, destroying inner cities and now reaching previously cloistered suburbs and small towns. He goes on to describe some behaviors seen in less extreme examples of these children. Cline also explains the benefits of and opposition to a very promising therapeutic technique with encouraging evidence of effectiveness in dealing with these vexing young people. Only problem- he recommends intensive training to deal help these children. Not alot of help if you see them in a classroom or neighborhood every day.
