ALMOST really great.......2006-12-12
I found this book to be exhilarating, fascinating and enlightening as well as moving and compelling. Though somewhat predictable and stereotypical, I found myself caught up in the plight of the characters and the injustice of the protagonist's life. I appreciated the opportunity to become enmeshed in the world of the Hasidim and Israeli life. And it is very much like becoming a temporary member of their world. One finds oneself thinking all sorts of things whilst reading the book such as: what would a life feel like that was completely structured, no questions asked, no decisions to be made, everything fully dpre-determined? And how does such a life compare with the complexities, moral dilemmas and confusions in the lives of those of us who pride ourselves and freedom of expression and decision? In this novel, the characters lead a life of structure and predestination. And I must admit, there were moments in which I felt a sense of envy at its relative ease. Overall, of course, one realizes that the freedoms forfeited are best left in tact. I found some of the characters flat and lifeless and way too 'all good guy" or "all bad guy". In that way the book was too simplistic. But overall I loved the plot and the fun of being in a new world, if even for a short while.

The title intrigued me. Sotah is an incredibly difficult topic in Orthodox Judaism and I was interested in what this book had to say about it. I shouldn't have bothered. The book joins a long list of slanderous works which present a completely false picture of Jewish life. It is clearly written by someone who not only hasn't the foggiest clue about the subject but who uses her considerable writing and storytelling skills to push the usual agenda: secularism is liberating, orthodoxy is stifling. The loaded language of the editorial reviews says it all.
I wouldn't have bothered writing this review except for one fabrication that I find truly horrific and which was mentioned by several of the reviewers. There is no such thing as a "modesty patrol" or vigilante "morals police" in the Jewish community and violence, threatened or otherwise especially against a woman, would evoke nothing but condemnation. It is also relevant that for various religious and religious-legal reasons there is no such thing as a Sotah in the modern world so the title is little more than a provocation.
If you like well written, emotional, women's stories (I do not mean that in any derisive way) this book fits the bill. But please, don't think that you can learn something meaningful about the topic it purports to cover.
I am not now an observant Jew but come from an observant family.

The story of a Jewish woman and the demands her faith and family put place on her. The book examines the consequences of an adulterous relationsip and scrutinizes the dictates of a fundamentalist Jewish sect. Ragen's presentation of an unexpected clash of cultures is insightful and thought-provoking. This is another book I've kept to myself as I'm not sure my reading friends would take away the same insights I have. I recommend it to the more serious thinkers among you.
informative, frustrating and a page turner.......2005-09-14
I enjoyed reading Sotah. I admit i had to put it down for a few days because I was upset with how Dina was being treated. All religions have their own super vigilantes that forget what relgion and God are really about. This might be a book you need to check the ending on before reading so you can relax and enjoy the story.

As a woman in corporate America, I found this book to be provide some extremely wonderful information. It was as if the authors had interviewed me directly to come up with those traps. Since completing the book, I have changed the way I approach projects, and have found the steps in the book to be extremely helpful! The format was so easy to follow, and I related to so much of the information-especially the common traps.

In March 2005, I attended the Office Depot Women's Success Strategies program. Speaker Anne Mulcahy, CEO of Xerox, was asked a question about the focus on recently-resigned HP CEO Carly Fiorina. Anne said that the key to making gender a non-issue was to get more women in the boardrooms. Amen!
Also at the conference, panelist Carol Frohlinger shared solid negotiating tips with the attendees. Impressed, I bought this book. WOW! This information levels the playing field. Get out there. Women in leadership positions will thank authors Deborah M. Kolb, Judith Williams and Carol Frohlinger for their strategic advice. Their book, solidly based on the experiences of 100 women in leadership jobs, clearly identifies obstacles women face in gaining legitimacy as leaders. The authors explain how women executives' incorrect - and possibly unconscious - assumptions increase their troubles. The book teaches readers to make their assumptions explicit and to overcome obstacles with step-by-step deliberate solutions. For instance, the book counsels you to get as much information as you can before taking a new position, and then to really think about what you have learned. The main chapters enumerate five major ways to gain respect and credibility as a leader, but the authors also provide advice on negotiation and some relevant questions for job hunters to ask. Although it gets repetitive, the authors accompany the final outline of major points with specific recommendations you can implement. We recommend this book to women in business who want to move up, or who already have.

This book is strictly for senior professionals, which is a plus for VP's, SVP's and C-level women looking for input on their level. It focuses on women already in leadership roles and is at both times inspirational and instructional. Real-life anecdotes keep it from being simply a textbook read and I really, really liked the roadmap in Appendix A which outlines "common traps" and "strategic moves."

The only thing that disappointed me about this book was that it ended. I wanted it to go on, I didn't want to leave these characters. You want to know what else the future has in store for them.
I've recently started reading her books, and playing catch up, I can't believe I've missed her. Her characters are memorable and she makes you feel them and you actually believe that you know them.
Give the book a try, you won't be disappointed.

The only reason why I picked this book up at my hairdresser's is because I wanted to see why readers love Susan Wiggs' books so much. Well, after finishing this book in five hours, I can see why. It's such a wonderful book .... it made me laugh and cry. It made me sigh and it was just wonderful. I couldn't put it down for one minute.
This book focuses on Lily, a school teacher who is content with the way her life is. She is planning to go to Italy for the summer after school's out. Suddenly, her best friend and ex-husband is killed in a car accident, and she finds herself taking care of Crystal's three kids along with Crystal's former brother-in-law, Sean. Sean is a former pro golfer who was kicked out of golf for cheating. Now teaching other people how to golf and bartender at the local golf course, Sean all of a sudden finds himself guardian with three kids, Cameron, a teenager, Charlie, a third-grader and Ashley, the two-year-old. Both Lily and Sean's lives were disrupted by the tragedy and together, they pull the kids through the darkest moments of grief.
It is a wonderful humane story about loss and love, friendship, dreams and hopes. It is a story that takes you to another world where things are still possible ~~ and yes, it is very predictable, but Wiggs make the trip fun anyways. This is a perfect reading for those times when you have a few hours to yourself ~~ and want to relax. She's a good storyteller and one that I plan to keep an eye out for.

I Enjoyed the book after I got past the sad part, and then I reall got into it. I like some of her other books better, but still a good book, and I have passed mine on to a friend to read.

I found this book hard to put down. I like the idea of more than one main character. Of course romance is always a plus in a book. Grieving is also different for everyone. She also showed there is no time schedule for grieving. This book was very well done.
