5 out of 5 stars This story will inspire and move you.......2007-10-09

I had borrowed this book from the library when I was reading William Fiennes' book, The Snow Geese. He mentioned that the story had inspired him to embark on his epic journey to follow the snow geese from their wintering grounds in Texas to their breeding grounds in the Foxe Peninsula. I was so moved by this story that I had to have a copy for myself. Get this book - I know you'll be glad you did! And when you read it, you'll see why it is still being published, 66 years after it was first published in 1941. That it has stood the test of time is a testament to the masterpiece that it is.

This book is really not written for children. I don't know why they keep saying that it's for kids. I suppose it's because of the lovely illustrations in it. However, the reading level is for young adults and adults. There's another book titled THE SNOW GOOSE AND OTHER STORIES. That book is written for young children and it's the same story, just rewritten for junior readers.

5 out of 5 stars This book provided a bridge to my grandfather.......2007-07-11

My poppa fought in WWII and, as was typical, never spoke of it.
But he used to read me this book and it was one of the ways I could somehow connect with him.
Years later, after he had died, I was driving down to Apollo Bay to go surfing - it was summer and I had the radio on listening to the cricket on the ABC. During the lunch break they played a reading of the Snow Goose by Ruth Cracknell. And as I kept dipping down in the hills past Whittlesea I would keep losing reception, reconnectig again on the rise.
In the end I stopped my car on a hill looking out over Bass Strait just to listen.
It is a beautiful story, one that should be read out loud, respectfully.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect.......2007-05-12

I read this book as a teenager and it has stayed in my heart ever since. It is a masterpiece. Not a word too long or too short, and the language and imagery absolutely sing.

I recently read it to a class of middle-schoolers. Not being a teacher, and knowing that the events of WW2 are even more distant for them than for me, I was a little concerned about how they would receive it.

I needn't have worried--they were spellbound; I'm not sure that anyone actually breathed. They were fascinated to learn about Dunkirk and the extraordinary flotilla of little boats that bravely sailed the Channel to fetch the soldiers, and they loved the yearning tenderness of the story. The discussion afterwards was thoughtful beyond anything I could have imagined.

There are a few books that I buy over and over again as gifts. This is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless tale.......2007-02-17

I happily used this book to teach the main ingredients of the short story. I frequently give it as a gift. Living near a Federal Refuge and knowing the snow goose well make this such a wonderful example because the Essex setting is so similar to the Forsythe Refuge. The story is timeless, as are the characters. There are lessons within for all of us. The historical aspect of the book is often new to children, who may not be familiar with Dunkirk.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant story.......2006-09-03

The Snow Goose is a beautifully written book that lingers in the memory long after the hour or so that it takes to read. Set on the coast of England at the time of Dunkirk, it is less about the strife of WWII itself than about its three main characters - one of whom is the snow goose - and what binds them. It is a story about nature, love, and nobility of spirit. To say more would be to give too much away. But it has had a place on my bookshelf for decades, and I reread it when I need to be reminded what is important in life.

    Book Description

Journey of the Snow Goose chronicles the spiritual and physical sojourn of Barbary and Bill Chaapel, who leave land and everything it represents behind them to sail away in a tiny sailboat for 7 1/2 years. They leave the known luxury of home, career, friends and family for the vast and deep unknown, sailing long and hard on the wind, sea-salted eyes searching for glimpse of land…all for slowed moments together, challenging their hearts to grow. In the year before they left Cleveland, they read and studied every book on heavy weather sailing, navigation, tides and currents the Cuyahoga County Library system had to offer. Although they knew how to pour oil on troubled waters and trail a sea anchor in a storm, nothing prepared them for the solitude of two, anchoring off an isolated far-away island. Years ago, with the precision of sailors' tools and compass rose, fate already had charted their course.

5 out of 5 stars The Couple Who Quit Work To Go Sailing.......2007-08-19

Journey of the Snow Goose is a lifetime dream come true. Along the way we met Art and Dorothy Bartlett making the same journey. The following is their view of our sojourn:

"The Journey of the Snow Goose brings to life a remarkable voyage that
fulfills the dreams and aspirations of a life time for Barbary and Bill
Chaapel. Sailing from a home port on the Great Lakes , transiting the
New York Barge Canal, then south via the Intracostal Waterway to Florida
and Bahamas .Ultimately continuing on to the uncharted waters of remote
Caribbean islands. It was a journey filled with unforeseen dangers and
adventures. Their abrupt transition from "Land Lubbers " to a life as
" Seasoned, Salty Sailors" is treated humorlessly as their stories
reveal the many learning experiences and often hair raising tales that
are part of a boaters rapport. Living aboard evolves around a whole
new life style without home conveniences and a togetherness in
extremely cramped quarters. This means adapting and being innovative in
even simplest of task such as cooking, sleeping, and the rigors of
    anchoring.

All well appointed sailing vessels have a crew . And Snow Goose is no
exception with a third mate - Honoree, the cat, who tolerates all
this boating stuff but doesn't delight in sailing with a rail awash.

PEOPLE, all kinds, all sizes, all cultures, in unusual places ,under
varying conditions; People are paramount in Barbary's meticulous log
and throughout the pages of this book her feelings and concerns for
others comes alive. No finer display of compassion is shown than
Barbary's association with a five year old waif, Cynthia, who lived
in squalor aboard a twenty foot derelict houseboat anchored in Potters
Cay, Nassau Harbor. She befriended this lost child, brought her small
gift of crayons , books and little personal items. But she also gave
her the most valuable gift of friendship and comfort by her visits.

Barbary's descriptive journal depicting their life aboard Snow Goose
ends with their return to their roots in the mountains of West Virginia.
Their sailing adventures could be summarized with, They lived happily
ever after...after a very full life at sea."

Important... Please note that this book has been rewritten for a very young audience by Christine Rose. This is not the book as it originally appeared!

4 out of 5 stars Great for young adults.......2000-05-18

This book is incorrectly listed as a book for babies. It is written for adults (young adults, and not so young!).

I LOVED The Snow Goose as a teenage girl. My son does not like to read, so I'm buying it for him because I think he will enjoy it. The Snow Goose is touching and inspirational, but it has enough war stuff to keep boys interested. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I haven't yet read the other stories. I'm anxious to read them, and to re-read the classic Snow Goose myself.

It's difficult to find good books for boys who would rather not read, so I'm pleased to find this book available!

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I had hoped ..........2001-09-25

For the inflated price, this book was a total disappointment. The author deals EXCLUSIVELY with the Mississippi/Central flyway, and spends a great deal of time speaking of specific areas in this region. This large portion of a VERY SMALL (8" X 6", large type, barely over 100 pages), outdated book was of zero use to a snow goose hunter from Maryland. As far as decoy types and placement, the author only reiterated what I'd already gleaned from magazines over two years (and that wasn't much). I will be returning this book, the first time I've ever returned anything to Amazon.com.

            Book Description

Brenn Owens, the new Earl of Merton, has come to London to choose a bride. The broad-shouldered war hero has his pick of the season's debutantes, but once he gazes upon Tess Hamlin, he knows he won't rest until he's made her his own. But behind Tess's light-hearted facade is desperation. She has no choice but to marry quickly, before news of her family's ruin becomes common gossip, so she accepts Brenn's sudden proposal—without letting him know the truth. He offers her days and nights of unforgettable passion and love, but how can she marry him without feeling she's betrayed him?

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Insults your intelligence mightily.......2007-09-01

First off, marriage contracts are always signed BEFORE the marriage. And they aren't in Italian, unless the groom is too stupid to live. Which apparently this one was, so maybe he deserved to get duped. The middle of the book was more interesting if a bit simplistic. Tess accepts the challenge of building up the estate better than Brenn accepted getting duped, but her attitudes are naive and silly.

Then it could get interesting when a villain comes along threatening mayhem but Brenn just fires a shot over his head and he goes off with his tail between his legs. Right. As if Brenn could have done anything to him once he's back in London. So that was stupid.

But the worst offence was Tess' brother getting off scott free for ripping off her 50,000 pound dowry and inheritance. All Tess can bleat about is protecting her brother's good name. Why in the world would she want to do that when he and her sister-in-law frittered her inheritance away on their own greed? Sure they could be proud of themselves for making the best of things but fair is fair and the cheating brother is never mentioned again. Which made them both look like spineless dupes in my book.

3 out of 5 stars Finished in haste.......2005-03-19

This book is a very quick read, which is good sinc it runs out of steam toward the end. The lead characters are interesting and wind up being very good for each other. There are some truly wonderful moments between them, such as after the highwaymen attack their carriage. From the beginning, you know they are making poor decisions that will harm each other, but you understand why and sympathize. The tale looses much of its power after they arrive in Wales -- not immediately, although I expected more emotion when the truth came out, but soon thereafter. Brenn's efforts to regain Tess' love (mainly her bed) are simply not enough to turn things around. Once they're dealing with the aftermath of their deceit, there's little depth of feeling or passion. It's like Maxwell didn't know what to do from there, and it all was resolved much too easily. The result is a love that, at the end of the book, doesn't always seem authentic.

Other problems include less than satisfactory secondary characters and far too many plot points never being resolved. What happened to Tess' friends? Her brother got away with embezzlement; where's the justice? And, sorry, but I just cannot believe that Tess' silver was worth nearly 50,000 pounds!

Up until the last 1/4 of the book, it's lovely. But the reader is left unfulfilled and much of the story remains incomplete. Pity. Married in Haste would have been significantly better if Maxwell had not finished in haste.

BTW, Tess' friend Anne is the heroine of my favorite Maxwell book, The Marriage Contract.

            3 out of 5 stars A Wager Leads to a Hasty Wedding.......2004-05-24

Tess Hamlin, being a rich and beautiful heiress, could have her pick among the eligible men, and in fact, has turned down several offers of marriage. No man has captured her interest or affections, until at a ball she meets handsome war hero, Brenn Owen, the new Earl of Merton. Brenn is equally enamored with the captivating Tess, plus he must marry a rich heiress in order to afford the cost involved with restoring his estate back to its original glory.

The circumstances that bring them to marry are most unusual indeed. As a lark, Tess makes a bet with her closest rival, which grows into a wager among several bored debutantes at the ball. Whoever garners the first marriage proposal wins. When the bet becomes public, Tess' brother insists she save her reputation by marrying Brenn, who has offered for her. Initially she refuses, but once she discovers her irresponsible brother has gambled away her fortune, she has no choice but to marry quickly in order to save face, and insure she ends up with a rich husband.

Tess and Brenn's mutual attraction and passion for each other leads to temporary happiness. Tess is unaware of his lack of finances, and the dilapidated state of her husband's home. Brenn is still in the dark that his rich heiress is now penniless. When they reach his Wales estate, the secrets are revealed. Will their secrets shatter their trust in each other, or will love conquer all?

Cathy Maxwell's books are a hit and miss proposition for me. One will be really good, and the next will be okay, but nothing special. Unfortunately, this book basically falls into the nothing-special category. It started off well with interesting, likeable characters. I enjoyed Tess' little wager and felt that was an original element of the story. In fact, the story was above average until Tess and Brenn reached Wales, and then it deteriorated. Especially when Tess became interested in the local folklore and the fairy folk. From there, the story became more unbelievable and felt rather forced.

If you've never read Ms. Maxwell before, I wouldn't recommend beginning with this one. Probably the best book of hers I've read thus far would be THE WEDDING WAGER, so that would be my suggestion to begin with. If you're a Maxwell fan, you may still find this worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars It could be better.......2004-03-24

I didn't like the hero, in my point of view he was a scoundrel, he only was thinking in her money !!!!
            Certainly, it could be better.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Story and Highly Sensual Characters.......2003-08-25

Delightful story of two people forced into marriage for economic reasons, only to find out that they are perfect for each other. Brenn Owen, Earl of Merton, and Tess Hamlin sizzle together and when hidden truths emerge that threaten their love, it brings out the great strength and character in each of them. Cathy Maxwell is a superb writer whose complex and highly sensual characters sizzle on the page. Do not miss this or any of her other books!

Here's one of my favorite Harlequin romances for 2003. Roz Denny Fox's MARRIED IN HASTE is a story of two people who try to rebuild their lives after a devastating earthquake destroys their families, leaving two sets of orphans and two adults who don't know what to do.

Ben Galloway is a highly eligible pediatrician - good looking, smart, and has a reputation for being a lady's man. Abby Drummond is a schoolteacher and lives a simple life. They meet through their respective jobs, and have been dating for about ten months. It's been a casual romance, nothing serious, but they are both having a lot of fun and are dating each other exclusively. They are about to go on a skiing trip together, when tragedy strikes.

Early morning while Abby is at school, an 8.0 earthquake strikes. Living in Seattle, Abby and the rest of the city are used to small jolts, some as big as 6.0. But an 8.0 earthquake is massive and leaves the city helpless. She does her best to calm her kids, and then hears word from a hospital that her brother Elliot has been taken to the hospital and she is needed there urgently. Elliot doesn't make it, nor does his wife. Their youngest son, Sam, is lucky to be alive. Thank goodness the rest of the family, two sets of twin boys, were at the school with Abby when the earthquake struck, and are safe. In the meantime, Abby learns that Ben's sister Marlo has also died in the earthquake, and has left two orphan girls.

It is now up to Ben and Abby to take care of their nieces and nephews, and not knowing what it's like to have kids, the two think this can be easily done with some careful planning. However, a few weeks later, they are still struggling to get a hold of the kids' emotions and are trying to deal with how to raise them. Their relationship is put on hold, although they don't want it to be. They both help each other out with each other's kids, and it finally dawns on Ben that maybe they should get married. With forces combined, it is possible they can get both families to survive and still find time to be together.

It's not quite the Brady Bunch. Things go from bad to worse. But love always finds a way. MARRIED IN HASTE may sound like an implausible type of situation, but Roz Denny Fox as usual does a great job making this story and it's characters believable, as well as likeable. I was glued to this book till I finished it, and was very glad i picked this book up. Thumbs up for MARRIED IN HASTE.

5 out of 5 stars deep look at the blending of extended families.......2003-08-22

In Seattle, pediatrician Dr. Ben Galloway and schoolteacher Abby Drummond plan to escape together for a week of skiing during the spring break. However, before they can leave town, a devastating earthquake hits the city. Abby's beloved brother and sister-in-law die leaving five orphaned boys behind for her to raise. Ben has two nieces living with him.

Ben and Abby are already in love, but family matters to both of them. During the crisis and afterward, they know that one household with two adults to raise seven children is easier than two separate families. However, as each person struggles with grief, coping and blending into a cohesive unit with need and love as the catalysts, the adjustments stagnate the evolution of the adult relationship.

Though most readers will think of the Brady Bunch and be surprised that Seattle and not California is the location, MARRIED IN HASTE is a deep look at the blending of extended families into one unit after a calamity has occurred. Though Ben is a strong (albeit bossy) lead character and the seven precocious (almost too adult like) children grab the hearts of the audience, Abby is the epicenter of the tale. She struggles with feeling that Ben sees her as a subordinate, with guilt (from telling her older brother the Reverend that she planned to go away with Ben), the need to mourn, and being there to nurture her kin through their grief. She turns this tale into a powerful novel.

5 out of 5 stars Tragedy and triumph - Very highly recommended.......2003-08-20

An earthquake devastates Seattle, forever changing the lives of school teacher Abby Drummond and pediatrician Ben Galloway. Their previous plans for a romantic skiing vacation over spring break take a backseat to necessity. Before they can leave town, the earthquake hits the city and Abby finds herself leading students to safety even as Ben struggles to the hospital to cope with emergencies. Life will never be the same.

Before the dust even settles, Abby learns that her brother and sister-in-law have died, leaving five boys for her to raise. Ben likewise finds himself caring for his two nieces. Practical concerns keep Ben and Abby from spending much time together until they decide to pool their resources. After barely seeing one another and trying to help each other when they can, Ben and Abby agree that marriage seems like a reasonable solution. But with so many children involved and not a word spoken about love, both Ben and Abby are ill prepared for the consequences they face.

Author Roz Denny Fox has a powerful gift for taking difficult situations and turning them into poignant tales of love and healing. In MARRIED IN HASTE, tragedy creates a blended family that faces the difficulties of grief and change. Although the precociousness of the children might at times prove distracting, Abby's story sparkles with rich emotion and powerful attraction. Her irritation with Ben's dominance, her guilt over her family, and her sense of responsible combine to make her one of the most powerful heroines this reviewer has encountered in serial romance. MARRIED IN HASTE comes very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Can Angie & Brett make a Marriage Work?.......2006-09-01

Angie and Brett have only been married a few days and things seem to be falling apart. Neither wanted that all consuming love but they have discovered that's what they have! What to do now Angie wonders?!

Brett is one of the sons of the infamous Blake Bravo. We did met Brett in his brother Buck's book BRAVO UNWRAPPED but Brett doesn't want to be like Buck, not a larger than life character, he just wants to be the town doctor in New Bethlehem Flat, CA-his home town!

He has just hired his new RN Angie Dellazola when he and she get called to the home of her parents to deliver her sister's baby who is also Brett's nephew. His *crazy* younger brother was involved with Glory some months ago but now she doesn't want anything to do with Bowie, he's one of those bigger than life characters too! Angie comes from a large several generation in one house kind of family that's noisy and nosey too!

Angie & Brett had been childhood neighbors and friends but each left town after high school to go to school and now 12 years later here they are. The first week on the job Brett & Angie had dinner together each night and they talked about the last few years in their lives some good and some not so good. The waitress they had each night made the off the cuff comment about why didn't they just get married! They thought they could have that kind of marriage where they didn't have be overwhelmed by love.

We watch/read how they solve their problems. Brett is such a sweet beta hero and Angie's sexy and sweet too.

Enjoy another Bravo male and the heroine he finds love with.

              2 out of 5 stars Let's Try This.......1999-03-10

I'm glad other people liked this book, though some readers mayhave as many problems with it as I had. McKella Patterson has justmarried Paul Dinsmore, a man she doesn't really love, in order to protect her family's company. Now, on their honeymoon in Bermuda, her husband has disappeared, there have been several threats on her life, and only a stranger named Greg seems to believe in her.

Readers who've managed to enjoy some of Sinclair's other books will probably like this one, too. Newcomers should probably be warned that she has a little problem with logic. Just one example (don't worry. it's not a spoiler): Greg tells McKella that she has to trust him, since has no alibi and the police will turn to her first. Which makes no sense, since she does have an alibi for the event he's talking about--a threat on her life which the police were even at! A lot of "Married in Haste" is just as hard to swallow, including a killer who waits for no apparent reason before striking--the reason seeming to be that, he's only supposed to act when the plot needs it, regardless of whether or not it makes sense. McKella keeps fluctuating between her husband and the new man and her life, forgetting her spouse for long stretches, then reclaiming her allegiance out of nowhere. The best part of the book is the prologue: moody and suspenseful, it pulls you right in. I will gladly admit that this is one of Sinclair's best written books, and the characters--when McKella isn't fluctuating madly--are sympathetic and well defined. Too bad I couldn't believe a minute of the story they were trapped in.

5 out of 5 stars As Always A Great Read........1999-01-27

Dani Sinclair has done it again. Another fabulous read. I love her writing style, her unexpected humor and the thrilling suspense. A definite keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Dani Sinclair is great!.......1999-01-14

5 out of 5 stars It's obvious why Sinclair was a RITA finalist this year!.......1998-12-21

Great story with wonderful characters! The book grabs the reader with the prologue, and you barely have time to catch your breath until the very end. I read it in one sitting, and really I'm looking forward to the next Sinclair.

5 out of 5 stars Make That A Marriage of Inconvenience!.......1998-08-24

Dani writes with humor and keen wit. Her snappy dialogue is great fun. Kudo's for Greg, the hero. I think I'm in love! And McKella is an unusual woman with a power name. This couple makes quite a team, whip cream or no whip cream. It's a fun, exciting read from start to finish.
