Leslie Pietrzyk's Pears on a Willow Tree starts with a recipe for pierogi and ends with one for poppy-seed cake. In between, four generations of Polish-American women talk, cook, argue, sew each other's wedding dresses, tell stories, and understand and misunderstand each other in the way that only mothers and daughters can. Starting with iron-willed Rose, who emigrates from Poland, and ending with Amy, who flees the role of her alcoholic mother's keeper, the Marchewka women enact an ancient dance of embracing and rejecting the tradition they come from. "It is the girls who keep the family alive," Rose writes to her Polish mother; but it is also true that, as she later tells her great-granddaughter, "It's impossible for a good daughter to leave; it's impossible for a good daughter to stay." Many of the chapters in Pears on a Willow Tree were first published as stories, and they sometimes hang together a trifle too neatly, with none of a novel's usual depth or range. But Pietrzyk has a nifty, uncluttered prose style and above all a keen ear for the way women really do talk. Pears on a Willow Tree is a promising debut from a writer with a gift for the enduring art of domestic portraiture.
Book Description
Pears on a Willow Tree is a multigenerational roadmap of love and hate, distance and closeness, and the lure of roots that both bind and sustain us all.
The Marchewka women are inseparable. They relish the joys of family gatherings; from preparing traditional holiday meals to organizing a wedding in which each of them is given a specific task -- whether it's sewing the bridal gown or preserving pickles as a gift to the newlyweds. Bound together by recipes, reminiscences and tangled relationships, these women are the foundation of a dignified, compassionate family--one that has learned to survive the hardships of emigration and assimilation in twentieth-century America.
But as the century evolves, so does each succeeding generation. As the older women keep a tight hold on the family traditions passed from mother to daughter, the younger women are dealing with more modern problems, wounds not easily healed by the advice of a local priest or a kind word from mother.
Amy is separated by four generations from her great-grandmother Rose, who emigrated from Poland. Rose's daughter Helen adjusted to the family's new home in a way her mother never could, while at the same time accepting the importance of Old Country ways. But Helen's daughter Ginger finds herself suffocating within the close-knit family, the first Marchewka woman to leave Detroit for the adventure of life beyond the reach of her mother and grandmother.
It's in the American West that Giner raises her daughter Amy, uprooted from the safety of kitchens perfuned by the aroma of freshly baked poppy seed cake and pierogi made by hand by generations of women. But Amy is about to realize that there may be room in her heart for both the Old World and the New.

ONE NOT TO BE MISSED.......2007-03-09
Having read and loved Leslie Pietrzyk's second novel, A YEAR AND A DAY, I wanted to be sure and read PEARS ON A WILLOW TREE. Such a treat!
Having married into a Polish family, much of this book touched my heart and home! Such fun, such sweet people. Told from the view of four different characters, this book tells the tale of Polish immigrants and their daughters from a time spanning from 1919 to present day.
Meet Rose, her daughter Helen, her daughter Ginger, and finally, her daughter Amy. This Polish family consists of many more characters, but these ladies spanning four generations tell the tale.
Rose comes over from Poland and starts life fresh and new with her husband in Detroit, Michigan. Her letters home to her mother are full of anticipation of a good, new life in the land of hope, America. Rose takes us through her life and then the remaining three generations tell their tales.
The story moves back and forth from character to character, and from past to present and back again. However, this was not confusing. I LOVE novels where each character adds their two bits to the story. Makes for great reading.
When the women of the family gather in the kitchen gossiping, chatting, drinking coffee, eating poppy seed cake, exchaning recipes, I just wanted to pull up a chair, grab a piece of cake and a cup of coffee and join right in! The description of the Polish food will just make you HUNGRY for a good hot piece of kielbasa!! YUM!!!!!
Third generation Ginger is the "black sheep" of the family when, immediately after graduating from high school, she leaves her family, friends, and Detroit and moves to Phoenix. Ginger cannot stand the closeness of her family, how everyone knows everyone's business, and cannot stand Detroit. Ginger also has a drinking problem, which adds to her messed up life. How her moving affects her family and herself is mainly the idea of the story, but the author does a great job of blending past and present, everyone's perspective, and this equals a good book.
Read this book and then read A YEAR AND A DAY. Leslie Pietrzyk has the talent to carry off any theme, plot, situation. I am hoping for future books from her. She has THE gift.
Thanks! Pam
A+.......2007-01-13
Perfectly written! Wonderful book detailing four generations of women with roots in Poland. Each character was so real!
Memories of the way we were.........2006-12-26
Having grown up in a Polish neighborhood on Chicago's South Side with a grandma (bushia)who emigrated from the "old country", this book was like a stroll down memory lane. Grandma filled out stomachs with perogi, kluski, and kelbasa, our heads with captivating stories and our lives with unforgetable customs and rituals.
Pears on a Willow Tree is the story of four generations of Marchewka women: (mothers and daughters)Rose, Helen, Ginger and Amy....some of them seeking to assimilate yet preserve the past and it's traditions while others fight to supress and escape from those same traditions. Ultimately all of these women are trying to find that "impossible pear".
Believe me, you don't have to be Polish to love this book!
Overall a pretty good read........2006-12-08
This reviewer enjoyed this book. I can relate to Amy quite a bit. At times I would forget who was speaking and a bit confused, but I enjoyed the way it was written. Maybe the subject hits home for too many people, or maybe alcoholism is accepted in the world today, but this book had me from the beginning.
I felt the ending was a bit abrupt and wish it would have ended on a different note, but I hope to get other books from this author.
Terrible writing.......2006-02-11
If you have had any exposure to good literature, you will find this novel nearly insufferable. The symbolism is cliche, narrative style predictable and unoriginal, and the book as a whole is this woman's self-indulgent notion that the story of her family makes a good read. If she had any creative ability, she could use her family history as a starting point, but she does very little to distinguish her writing as exciting and fresh. Dull, dry, predicatable, callow, and unfortuantly a requirement from a lit professor who has insulted my eight semesters as an English student.

No more questions.......2005-07-19
This book not only answered all the questions my 5 year old Davey had, it kept him persuing his determination to "read the big words" as soon as he could. Wonderful, informative reading for all ages.
Great book for young readers.......2004-09-06
This was a fun and relatively easy read for our 5 year old child. The words are easy enough to read and the illustrations are beautiful. We went to see the statue earlier this year and this book came home with us from the gift shop. It was great to hear our child read it on the ferry boat as we left Liberty Island. It was a welcome gift for our child and will be a source of fond memories. If your child has never seen the statue and you're planning on seeing it, this book would be a nice preview for him/her. If your child has already gone there, this would make for a nice memory builder. It is great for a child about 4-6 years old with an affection for the statue and who is interested in learning to read or build up their early reading skills.

A slang term for anesthetist is "Sleeper", and every nursing student knows what it is like to fall asleep with a book in his or her hand. But if you have ever dreamed of a fulfilling career beyond the call of bedside nursing, this may be the book that will keep you awake. -- With insight and thoroughness, this step by step book describes in detail the process of becoming an SRNA (Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist). -- Topics that are covered include: requisite experience and knowledge, finding a school, funding options, interviewing, community service opportunities and a wealth of other essential information. Get an idea of what it is like to wear the stethoscope of a student nurse anesthetist, both didactically and clinically.
Customer Reviews:
Don't bother!.......2007-08-30
I learned a valuable lesson from the purchase of this book... read the reviews. This book basically stated the obvious for anyone who is serious about becoming a CRNA. It probably would be helpful for those who have given the career a millisecond of thought, but for anyone that has decided it is what they want to do or have already started the process-- don't bother! (This book wasn't even adequately proofread before publishing, there were many obvious errors.)
Nothing New.......2007-08-26
I have been researching the CRNA path for a couple years, and this book really didn't offer any new information. In fact, some of it may be misleading. An example is his assertion that a CRNA program director might choose a 3.5 GPA student over a 3.9 GPA student if he/she had some kind of community service. This, I believe, is rationalization and maybe even wishful thinking. 3.9 students don't grow on trees, they are created with huge amounts of effort -- the same kind of effort and academic commitment is takes to be a successful SRNA. This book is not necessary for those who can do even mediocre research.
A Good Starting Place..........2007-08-01
This is a great starting place for the nurse who is considering anesthesia as a career. Michael Gray has done an excellent job of writing down the step-by-step process that it takes to apply to anesthesia school. I totally disagree with the harsh reviews written about this book. First of all, I am very proud to be a CRNA, and I welcome any nurse that is considering going into this awesome profession. I encourage anyone who is starting this process to purchase this book because it can truly help you. Also, I emailed the author concerning the cover illustration and he has assured me that this was a printing error(the picture was reversed) and that in subsequent printings, this defect will be corrected. I have donated this book to my hospital's medical library so that all of the nurses that work there can have access to this process. Good Job Michael Gray!
What the......?.......2006-12-07
The title should be "How to Get into Nurse Anesthesia School: A Complete Guide from Someone who, thus far, has been unable to do it, himself". In addition, the first clue that this book isn't worth the paper it's printed on is the fact that the person intubating on the cover is doing it with the wrong hand!! Buying this book is like buying a book by Ross Perot on how to become President of the United States. Give me a break, dude!
Beware..........2006-12-06
I AM a CRNA. There is no experience like walking the long road & living with the sacrifices required to get through an anesthesia program. If you wanna know how to become a CRNA... ask one. Ask a SRNA. The resources to learn about the profession are endless. I would never rely on a book written by someone who is an 'expert by association'.

The neighbors may think Miss Tizzy quite peculiar, but the children love her. They love her colorful house and her colorful clothes, but most of all they love the special attention she pays to them all.
Together, they bake cookies, make pictures full of sunshine and butterflies for folks who have stopped smiling, play dress-up, put on puppet shows and parades, or stretch out on bright quilts in Miss Tizzy's backyard of an evening to sing moon songs.
When Miss Tizzy becomes ill and takes to her bed, the children know just what to do to let her know she is missed and loved. Here's a picture book certain to touch the hearts of children of any age.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2006-11-05
This book is full of vibrant pictures that are eye-catching for children and adults alike. But, what I really loved is the story. Sweet Miss Tizzy loves children and has an independent mind, helping the children have fun and learn some valuable lessons in the meantime about caring for one another. It, along with Robert Munsch's "Love You Forever" is one of the few children's books that can make me cry. If you want your child to learn compassion, read this with them often!
And the children loved it...........2006-04-05
Last Friday I had the pleasure of hearing this lovely book read to a classroom of second graders at Emery Elementary School in Washington, DC. The children were thrilled by the book's beautiful illustrations and uplifting message. They especially enjoyed joining in reciting the refrain, "And the children loved it." I highly recommend "Miss Tizzy," to anyone who wants a fun and inspiring book for children.
And the children loved it.......2005-11-30
My second grade students loved this story. They did not find the refrain cloying at all. In fact, they smiled big smiles each time I read "And the children loved it."
A wonderful book for children and adults!.......2003-09-16
I discovered this book at the library and wanted to share it with all my friends. It's creative and quite touching. We should all want to have a friend like Miss Tizzy... or be her! Go get it and pass it on.
A beautiful story of fun, friendship & authentic learning.......1999-10-13
This delightful book should be read by everyone who works with young children in a learning environment! Miss Tizzy's real love of fun and of learning through play and experiences provides neighborhood children with all the tools they need to express their creativity and the wonder of their world. Using the every-day environment of her home, Miss Tizzy creates a place of learning and fun in which the children discover true friendship. In the end, they learn to give love and joy back to their special friend when she needs it the most. Illustrations in this book show refreshing ethnic diversity. Grab some tissue, because this book will truly touch your heart!

Customer Reviews:
a total waste of money.......2007-10-10
The synopsis given sounds engaging, but I quickly lost interest with the many typos and the way it was written. Come on! You're a writer! Don't be so cavalier with the grammar rules!! Please! I'm not sure if the book was good or not because the style of writing quicly got on my nerves so much so that I'm returning it for a refund having only read the first 5 pages. If you're looking for a good read, this isn't it.
Good Plot.......2007-01-18
While I enjoyed the story-line, I had difficulty reading between the numerous typos. This book could benefit from a better editor.
Really a two-star disappointment.......2006-09-30
This novella gets one star for poor writing and 3 stars for an okay story. The editing and proofing earn a minus one because there are too many typos/misspellings and no one told Alexander that there isn't enough emotion to grab the reader and pull us into the story - which is pedestrian. Alexander deserves her "props" for giving us a young, black, professional lesbian. Unfortunately, I could care less what happens to her.
Nice read........2006-05-26
This was a nice, easy read. Finished the book in one day. Story somewhat jumped around. Transitions not smooth. I would recommend for a quick, entertaining read.
Jada and the Drama - 3.5 stars.......2006-03-22
If I had three words to describe JADA, author Denise Alexander's debut novel, it would be: no more drama!
Alexander's tale is the semi-erotic tale of Jada Williams, a sexy diva in a new relationship with femme Shanice. Jada, who's only out to her friends, has been in the life for a few years, and thinks she has finally met the perfect woman. After meeting at a club, the two hit it off and get pretty serious after a couple of months.
Both Jada and Shanice have previously been dead-end relationships that took tolls on their souls. Jada learned she can't be something she's not to please others, while Shanice survived endured an abusive affair. They lean on each other and try to trust again, though it's not easy.
Everything is peachy for the pair until Shanice loses her job. Jada soon learns the real Shanice is ugly -- and it takes something piercing for Jada to realize that Shanice is not as perfect as she seems.
Alexander is a good storyteller, I'll give her that. But Jada moves too quickly to for the reader to get a real hold of the characters. The novel's namesake comes off kind of immature and shallow at times, and the couple's problems seem to be easily solved with sex. The grammatical errors also take away from the tale, too.
However, I do recommend Jada for lazy afternoon read -- one that starts off good but ends too swiftly.
