Book Description

In these ten interwoven stories, two adolescent brothers face a world in which their father has suddenly died, a world dominated by their beautiful and complicated mother. Thirty years later, one of the brothers–the only remaining survivor of a family he seeks both to leave behind and to preserve in words forever–narrates these precise and heartbreaking tales. Suffused with the beauty of Richard McCann’s extraordinary language, Mother of Sorrows introduces us to an elegant writer like no other in contemporary fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Mother of Sorrows is a fantastic book........2007-01-11

A beautifull written series of stories of life. An excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars McCann at a New Height of His Genius.......2006-11-28

I became a fan of Richard McCann's writing when I read his story "My Mother's Clothes: The School of Beauty and Shame" in the April 1986 issue of The Atlantic (still on my shelf). Since then I've eagerly read his poetry, essays, and fiction, and am ecstatic to find him at the height (thus far) of his literary genius in his collection of linked stories, MOTHER OF SORROWS. Were it not for the high art he brings to bear on profound human dilemmas--family relations, psychosexuality, societal pressures, desire itself--these stories would be unbearable in their heartbreaking poignancy. Fortunately, he transcends pain with his uncommon sensibility and gorgeous prose, deepening the reader's insight.

4 out of 5 stars "But I Said Nothing ... ".......2006-09-16

Picked this up at Borders and read it to the end nearly without stopping.

A collection that moves through a man's life - and revolves highly around a life of silence, self dissatisfaction and his 'instinct for survival' - remaining mute, going with the flow no matter the personal cost.

The strong images of his mother and as she fades with age contrast his soft background study of his father. His brother, Davis - someone he keeps at arms length even as he aches to hold him close. And the strange attraction that a person can have for someone so close to them - a need for that person that seems to defy logic and law.

The language is beautiful - and the store feels like an answer to the question, "If you had one day to spend with someone who's gone ... who would it be? What would you do?"

Even the close in its lakeside sunset styling leaves off with a man's voice who seems to have found that it is himself that he missed spending any time with while alive.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, haunting and beautiful.......2006-03-21

The book is not a cheery one but it is so beautifully written and memorable that it is one that you will want to share with others after you have read it. The author has pieced together short stories from the last fifteen years which provide a cohesive narrative which reads like a novel. The stories are inner reflections from his life, growing up gay and under the spell of his mother and trying to make connections with his brother and father (who dies when the author is eleven). The brother is gay also but their lives are complete opposites - the author, struggling to come to terms with being gay and living in the closet and his brother, openly gay but living an aimless life filled with drugs and misfortunes. The slim volume is a haunting portrait of a fragile family coming to grips with life, love and loss. It is a book that you won't soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars In his own words...........2006-01-12

Its always good to read a book which comes with a fresh style of writing.
Its so easy to be with the narrator as he begins from his childhood till he becomes an adult and not feel at loss through his aging. The author shows his prowess in this continuity. There is not much about his transition between these ages. But this leap of time analysis is done on his elder brother, summing up what mess he got into.
His constant comparision of him and his brother to Cain and Abel make for a good reading on figurative writing.
In the background, his mother with an on and off appearance and impact and too many stories under her sleeve is an interesting character to know of.

Book Description

Drawing on her experience of growing up with a depressed mother and then, years later, of becoming a depressed mother herself, Books for a Better Life winner Anne Sheffield casts long-overdue light on the grave threat to the health and happiness of millions of women and their children posed by maternal depression. One of every four women suffers from depression at some point in her life, often during the prime childbearing years, yet most fail to recognize the true source of their lack of joy in life and in parenting, their irritability and exhaustion, and the flawed personal relationships that characterize this common, treatable disease. With honesty and empathy, Sheffield uses her own story as a springboard to alert other mothers to the dangers their unrecognized depression holds not only for themselves, but also for their children, whose risk of developing the illness is three times higher than the risk to children of non-depressed parents. She draws on extensive research by experts in psychiatry, psychology, and child development to explain why and how children with a depressed mother may lose out on a rewarding social life, perform below their academic potential, or fall victim to substance abuse. Chapters on each age-group--infancy and toddlerhood, school age, and adolescence--pinpoint the symptoms and effects of a mother's depression on her children and offer advice on how to recognize these effects and so lessen or avoid them. And because depression's fallout destroys family cohesion and harmony, Sheffield draws attention to its impact on marital relations and outlines a strategy for fathers that will help them and their children weather the crisis. The detailed information in Sorrow's Web about how to treat depression at any period in a mother's life--during pregnancy or following delivery, when her children are teenagers, or later in life--will help readers of all ages choose wisely from the range of medical and psychotherapeutic options available. Sheffield offers insider tips on how to tell the difference between good and poor practitioners, how to ensure that the illness does not return, and how to recognize and respond to warning signs of depression in vulnerable children. Dedicated to the author's daughter, Sorrow's Web seamlessly weaves together real-life stories with street-smart advice. As the first book to demystify, destigmatize, and humanize a long-taboo subject, it points the way to sustaining and regaining a loving relationship between mother and child.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enormously helpful.......2001-01-28

Sheffield's biggest contribution may offering an answer to those who have struggled with chronic depression: "Why have I always felt so strange? Where did this all come from?" In other words, the fallout from living with a mother who is depressed -- even someone who has never been identified as "depressed" -- can have lifelong consequences. The book will probably convince those who have been reluctant to get treatment to do so. Much of the rest is a standard round-up of recent literature and the usual advice on what to do when you are depressed --take medication, find a therapist - maybe. Despite its failings and its occasionally cutesy writing, it's probably the book about depression that has been the most personally helpful. I'd give this five stars for the idea and three for the execution.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Book I Needed to Read Decades Ago.......2000-11-07

Sorrow's Web -- the book I've needed to read for decades. Ms. Sheffield deals with the subject of growing up with a depressive mother in such an insightful, intelligent, and honest way! I found recognition, understanding and comfort from her combination of the personal and the more "scientific" information. I urge mothers, daughters, sons -- and, yes -- fathers, to read this book. It has the potential profoundly affect your life and the life of those you love most.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2000-10-19

This is an extraordinary book -- sensitive, revealing and READABLE. I only wish I had it thirty years ago!

5 out of 5 stars Light on a shadowed subject.......2000-10-19

This balanced, frank, and insightful account will make a difference in a lot of lives. Thoroughly explores and illustrates the many aspects and consequences of maternal depression in detail, is packed with valuable observations and information - no wasted words here. Devoted to straight talk. Sheffield offers knowledgeable support to her reader, does not flinch from using her own experiences to illustrate her points, and provides clear, practical advice on therapy choices with no waffling on any of the challenges we will meet in seeking the right treatment for ourselves or others close to us. Provides lists of resources for information, newsletters, local support groups. An illuminating and much needed book.

    4 out of 5 stars Losing a child.......2005-11-23

This book needed to be written. As a bereaved parent myself, I understand the importance of wanting to keep the memory of a dead child/children alive. Julia Quinlan's willingness to re-live the painful memories of her child's suffering and ultimate death show remarkable courage. She is indeed a very courageous woman. Her appeal to the younger generation of the consequences of dugs mised with alcohol is vital information. However, what comes through more in this book is the care-giving provided during Karen-Anne's (and her family's) ordeal. I admire Julia's honesty and her credibility in writing this book. She deserves to be heard!

5 out of 5 stars Quiet grace and strength.......2005-10-15

I am trying not to be biased, since I am a volunteer for the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. The book is so wonderful in that it is such a sad story, yet told without self-pity. With all Mrs. Quinlan has accomplished, it is hard to imagine the agony she has suffered. And all the good that came out of it. A beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars My Joy, My Sorrow.......2005-08-23

An amazing book in which Julia Quinlan tells her life story and the circumstances of the famous Karen An Quinlan case. Mrs. Quinlan explains that her deep faith and family values help her cope with this tragedy, which is any parent's worst nightmare.

That she is able to retain her faith and love of God is a miracle.

    A quick read.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is a Gem. Small, beautiful and precious!.......2005-08-15

This is a beautifully written book about a family of seemingly ordinary people who, each in their own way, proved to be great human beings.
They were thrust into an incredible nightmare when their Karen Ann went into an irreversible coma.
The family's only concerns were to do what they thought was right and what they knew Karen Ann would have wanted them to do. Their struggle to follow through on their beliefs and Karen's wishes changed the world.
People are known by the company they keep. We are fortunate that this deeply personal book allows us to keep the company of Julia Quinlan.
Thank you Julia, for this wonderful gift.

5 out of 5 stars New Look at Russian Icons.......2006-05-24

The veneration of religious icons has never before been subjected to psychoana-lytic study. In his new book American scholar Daniel
Rancour-Laferriere makes empirical observations on the behavior of Russian Orthodox Christians in the presence of their favorite icons, investigates folkloric beliefs about icons, psychoanalyzes theological treatises on icons, and offers skeptical commentary on the miracles allegedly performed by icons.

It is demonstrated that icons of the Mother of God constitute the most popular category of icons in Orthodox Russia. The Mother of God is even deemed Palladium of the Russian State. This is because she functions as an omnipotent and idealized maternal object in the unconscious lives of her nationalist venerators. The Mother of God also encourages masochistic fantasies and behaviors among her venerators, for on the majority of her icons she accompanies and implicitly approves of her son, Jesus Christ, that model moral masochist who voluntarily offered himself up to be tortured and crucified on the cross.

And the ending didnt seem like an ending to me it just seemed like that was a good time to just make the last 5 pages an ending. Cathy Williams is a good author but this just wasnt a shining novel.
