Roseann the Librarian LOVES Mcsweeney's.......2007-09-05
Highly, highly recommended!! I am not a huge fan of short stories, but this book has changed my mindset. It is by far my most favorite of the few Mcsweeney's editions I have read, to date.
I enjoyed every one, but particularly "Uninvited" which is written from a naughty child's perspective. Bravo.
The stories by Icelandic authors are quite vivid and a little unorthodox compared to some of the stories Americans would write....I enjoyed every one! A definite must-have for the short-story reader or collector.

BRITISH SEX SUPERSTAR "PLAYED" TO THE HILT!.......2007-01-07
Anyone that reads Simon Sheridan's "Come Play With Me", will realise very quickly that he is indeed a fan of the late British sex superstar Mary Millington. She was relatively unknown in America, but in Britain she was a legend in a time when "hard core" pornography was still illegal on that side of the pond. Sheridan treats Mary with a respect and sensitivity that lays out her very open bi-sexual lifestyle to the fullest. From a girlie magazine model to porn queen to a leader of the sexual revolution in the 1970's. It's all here in a well researched account, complete with plenty of revealing pictures and in-depth comments from those that knew and worked with her. Mary was the proverbial innocent "girl next door", who became the nation's sex goddess and a public enemy to the authorities. Whereas hardcore pornography had long been legal in Europe and with the infamous movie "Deep Throat"... bringing the USA into the act, it was still very much of the "soft core" variety in the UK. Specially when it came to the movies being produced by the British film industry itself. The same high street cinemas that once showed the likes of "Lawrence Of Arabia" and "2001", were now filling those very same seats with "Can You Keep It Up For A Week", "Confessions Of A Window Cleaner" and other assorted titles. It was the era of the "sex comedy", the saucy humor of Benny Hill and the famous "Carry On" films, taken to the next step or mis-step depending on your tolerance of such things.
"Come Play With Me" was one of these "sex-com" epics that starred Mary Millington and it went on to become the record holder for the longest-ever theatrical booking in British cinema history. What makes this book such a good read, is that it highlights the utter hypocrisy of the times and the misplaced and all out vendetta that the police and Her Majesty's government had against this perceived threat to the realm and the British sense of "order". An outspoken critic of Britain's antiquated pornography laws, Mary was adored by the public but her lifestyle ultimately led to drug use and prostitution. Always under an unrelenting pressure and harassment from the police and the tax man, it finally led Mary to take her own life. A good supplement to this subject is Simon Sheridan's "Keeping The British End Up" which looks at the sex films already mentioned and the declining British movie industry that produced them during this period. It too is available from Amazon.

Sentimental.......2007-07-03
This is a great book for a very sentimental Dad of a little girl (no matter what age of his little girl).
Heartwarming and delightful!.......2006-06-20
Reviewed by GeorgeAnne Smith for Reader Views (6/06)
This little gem of a book, "Daddy Will You Dance With Me?," was one of the most delightful, sentimental, and heartwarming books I've read in quite some time. Short in length, but long on message, the author, Sandra Schoger Foster, not only relates, but shows the reader just how special the relationship can be between a girl and her father.
Sandra begins the story when this precious girl was just a young child, and continues through adolescence, on to adulthood. Through a few pleasant twists and turns, we watch the bond between father and daughter grow ever stronger over the years. Without giving away any secrets to the story middle or ending, I'll just mention that this sweet saga survives into the next generation.
Beautifully written and illustrated with talent and attention to detail, "Daddy, Will You Dance With Me?," will make a lovely gift to your father, or a wonderfully appropriate keepsake for anyone you know who wishes to create memories with their own fathers. My father passed on four years ago, but when I read this book, memories flooded back to me of my special relationship with him. Whether a gift for Father's Day, birthdays, or stocking stuffer, make sure to put this book on your shopping list for that special someone. I guarantee it will put a smile on their faces when they read it; I know it did mine.
Father's Day Gift.......2006-06-02
Daddy, Will You Dance With Me? by Sandra Schoger Foster celebrates special moments between fathers and daughters throughout all stages of life. It is a beautiful little gift book, perfect for Father's Day or any special occasion you want to impart love to someone who may have everything.
Daddy Will You Dance With Me?.......2006-01-11
Because I know the author, she has shared the book even though it is not yet in the bookstores. It captures the feelings of a young girl perfectly and tenderly and accurately describes the love shared by a daddy and his young daughter. Definitely one I will buy for each of my children to have in their home libraries for my grandchildren to enjoy.

An intriguing story about mothers and daughters..........2007-01-31
College life was a joy for Jane Porter...as long as she had her loving boyfriend by her side. But when she discovered she was pregnant their junior year, Jeffrey Hayden was anything but loving. Jane wanted the baby; Jeffrey wanted his life the way it was. Without the prospect of marriage, Jane's mother Margaret forced her to give her daughter up for adoption.
Fifteen years later, Jane is a successful baker, running one of the most well-known spots in New York City. But Margaret's illness forces her to come home to Rhode Island, where her younger sister Sylvie has all but given up her own life to care for their mother.
Once she's back in Twin Rivers, Jane becomes obsessed with the idea of getting to know her daughter Chloe. Now a high school student, Chloe was adopted by a local couple. Raised as an only child, Chloe had the companionship of her same-age cousin Isabel -- until Isabel and her mother were killed four years ago. While the Chadwicks have some trouble coping with Chloe's antics now that she's in her teens, her Uncle Dylan finds the girl a godsend, soothing him in the years since the loss of his own family.
With summer approaching, Dylan sets Chloe and her friend Mona up in his roadside apple orchard stand...providing a golden opportunity for Jane that she can't believe. She bakes pies and tarts for the girls to sell, all the while beginning a relationship with her daughter. Chloe, of course, has no idea who Jane really is. All she knows is that her uncle's smitten with her...
But, as with all things, the truth finally has to come out; and when it does, what will Chloe and Dylan think of Jane's lies?

Dance with Me resonates with the magic and mystery of human relationships...and the real beauty of the human heart.
Jane Porter has always been a free spirit, as wild and beautiful as the vast acres of apple orchards in rural Twin Rivers, Rhode Island -- the town forever etched upon her heart. Now, fourteen years after she left it behind, Jane is unexpectedly drawn home to her mother and only sister. Dylan Chadwick has come back too, shedding the steely exterior he wore as a federal agent in order to follow in the footsteps of his apple-farming father and escape the memories of the life he once lived.
Amid this landscape of loss and renewal, of families struggling to find their way back together with an innocent young girl as their lodestone, a haunting story about small-town secrets unfolds. Dance with Me explores emotional connections at their very core, with acute insights into the ties between mothers and daughters, sisters and lovers that will resonate for a long time to come.

This book was not for me.......2007-07-01
As an adoptive mom i was not thrilled with this book on many levels. I was not happy with the (unfavorable)portrayal of Chloe's adoptive parents and the fact that there seemed to be no love between any of them at all. Ms.Rice obviously has not a clue about the true love and bonds formed between adoptive parents and their children. i know that this was a book only written about a particular family but i was truly disappointed with the way adoption was portrayed-for those reading about it will get the wrong impression of adoptive families in general.
I would not recommend this book at all.
Disappointing.......2007-02-12
I found this book very disappointing. Everything was so predictable, I didn't even have to read to the end. Jane was an extremely selfish, self-centered, 35 year old woman. She came home on the pretext of taking care of her mother, yet, that's not why she really came home. She came home to butt into the life of a daughter she gave up at birth and to get into that daughter's uncle's pants. Jane has a younger sister, who has stayed with their mother all these years, pretty much giving up a social life, and her career. Jane supposedly came home to help her, but all she did was leave the sister with more work, and even took her car whenever she wanted without asking. What a selfish character. Anyway, as stated above, the whole story was very contrived and very predictable. What a disappointment. I've read four or five other books by Luanne Rice which I enjoyed very much, but not this one.
An Excellent Multigenerational Story.......2006-09-25
Other reviewers have accurately described Luanne Rice's Dance With Me. What hit me when I read it was the way the author presented the book in the eyes of young, middle-aged, and older people. For example, Margaret Porter, the retired school principal, and mother of Jane and Sylvie, was in the early stages of dementia of some type. Being in her head was some times confusing to the reader, and well it should be.
Then, we get into the head of a 15-year old. But not just any 15-year old. Chloe is adopted and knows it. She longs for her real mother, but loves her adopted parents dearly. At one point we, the readers, must feel the pain she goes through when she first learns she might be pregnant. This is especially hard if you are a parent of a teen yourself.
In the middle are Sylvie, Jane, and Dylan (Chloe's uncle). Sylvie, who has put her life on hold to care for her mother until her sister Jane helps her find a way to find happiness for herself. Jane, mother of Chloe, is steadfast throughout. She must have suffered throughout the years before the story begins, but now she is okay with it. It is not until the end of the book that we learn enough about Chloe's father to understand Jane.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story guided by excellent characters. It is a book you won't want to end.
Great Story, Great Read.......2006-03-02
The subject of this book hit close to home for me. I loved the characters, the story, and Rice's sensitivity in the telling of the 2 stories that kept me reading nonstop for 10 hours. I felt the pain, joy, tears, and laughter of these great characters. The depth, the twists and turns (that life gives you), and the genuine emotion of each character and his or her role in the drama of the life Luann Rice breathes in to and around is sound, down to Earth , and genuine. The story lines are not corrupted. The mother who gave up her child leads an unhappy, lonely life while she sees that this lovely free-spirit has had a happy life, despite teenager angst. The devestated father comes home and finds solace and possible happiness. The reader will appreciate how the teenager and her birth mother connects with him. Connections break and never be reconnected perfectly, but grafting two broken pieces create a wonderful new thing! I believe this is one Rice's best books.
Relationships and Apple Orchards.......2005-11-19
Jane is drawn back to her Rhode Island roots by her mother's failing health and the yearning for the daughter she gave up as an infant. The baby (named Chloe) is now a teen. Chloe feels misunderstood by her adoptive parents and stymied in her efforts to seek out her birth mother. Not realizing why Jane is interested in her, they develop a friendship.
A relationship springs up between Jane and Chloe's uncle, Dylan, who had suffered the tragic loss of his wife and daughter. He devotes himself to restoring the family orchards.
As secrets are revealed, the relationships shift and re-form between Jane, her mother, her sister, the long lost daughter, the adoptive parents and Dylan.
The author has a sure hand at creating the small town Rhode Island setting and the complex relationships and feelings.

a great woman of dance.......2003-01-12
This book is a wonderful testimony of M's de Mille's perserverance in her chosen field of dance. M's de Mille uses the letters she wrote to construct her life as a dancer and later a choreographer.
M's de Mille does an excellent job of portraying the people she worked with (George Ballachine, Irving Berlin, Gertrude Lawrence, and Cole Porter among others) as well as describing herself, warts and all. She doesn't feel the need to make herself look good at someone else's expense.
It's amazing that a woman that was told she was ugly, who was definitely not encouraged to go into dance, managed to become one of the great, most memorable choreographers ("Oklahoma!", "Brigadoon" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" among many others) of all time. It's especially astouding to realize she did this without any help or encouragement from her famous uncle, Cecil de Mille or her father William de Mille (who was a successful playwright).
Read this book and find out how M's de Mille makes the long journey from a being a fired choreographer in New York to winning two Tony awards. You'll be glad to be along for this trip.

Dance With Me Spins.......2000-07-13
Promiscuous Felicity has fallen in lust with Peter. Suddenly, Peter is killed. In a matter of days, Felicity, whose relationship with Peter was based upon three weeks of great sex, finds herself the beneficiary of Peter's worldly goods, the origins of which are cloaked in mystery. Sandwiched between lust and money is plain, possessive Iris, the victim of Peter's unfaithfulness. Louise Doughty propels the reader through a plot that is entertaining yet difficult to grasp. The first quarter of "Dance with Me" reads like a mystery. In the second quarter the reader is led to believe that this is a ghost story. By the third quarter the reader is certain that this book is a psychological thriller. "Dance with Me" proves in the last quarter to be something entirely singular...a narrative with a fragile twist. Louise Doughty has a wicked sense of humor that spins the reader into a story that is constructed on several levels. It is elegantly written and told from the perspective of two very different yet very similar women. If you enjoy a clever plot, revel in a wicked sense of fun, and crave a story with some depth, then try "Dance with Me".

The interview we all dream of having!.......2007-09-19
George has written the interview we all dream of having. He asks the questions we all have, along with biblically sound answers. It is quite apparent that the Holy Spirit inspired George throughout this entire book! You, too, will find yourself asking questions and thoughts being evoked at a depth you may never thought you'd go. It's a quick read... or not, depending on how you ponder over the meat within not only the answers, but the questions as well. A very relevant book for such a time as this. I also HIGHLY recommend the accompanying study guide that Karen Pettingell wrote to enhance this interview. You just may find the interviewee will be interviewing YOU! Or, you may find yourself dancing...
Teach Me Lord, to Dance.......2007-08-27
By Sofia Steryo-Bartmus, Author "Paws of Wisdom" Valuable Lessons We Can Learn From Our Pets
If you interviewed Jesus, what would you ask? And what would He answer?
George Pettingell has done a thorough job in introducing to us who Jesus is. He makes Jesus come alive as you turn each page, as if you were sitting there with him asking the questions. In this unique interviewing style Jesus give us answers from the easiest to the most uncomfortable questions. This book is great for believers in Christ, old and new, who still have many unanswered questions, as well as for non-believers; those who are seeking and those who are trying to disprove Christ.
Although the answers are mostly based on Scripture and Bible stories, they are written in a simple, current and easy to understand language. I enjoyed the book very much. I found it interesting, informative and thought provoking. What if Jesus is who he says he is? Then what? What are we to do next?
If you have never had a personal relationship with Jesus, you certainly will want to have one by the time you finish this book.
"Teach me Lord, to dance" is a timeless reference book for everyone's library (including the reference material in the back of the book for future study).
This is truely a book that will change you........2007-07-06
Sit back and get ready for one of the greatest conversations ever, as if your sitting right there in the room with George and Jesus. The questions are relevant and the answers are in layman's language, modern and based on age-old Bible references. This presentation really brings to life the Bible stories. This is one of kind book written for the novice to the expert, it is one that you won't put down until the end and then it will open your mind and thoughts to a modern perspective about the Bible. I love this book, Thanks George.
Teach Me, Lord, to Dance.......2007-06-09
I loved this book, it made me feel so good when I read it. It clearly reminded me of the book Joshua, that I have liked forever. It asks questions and gives answers that are easy to understand and helpful in keeping your faith. I would highly recomend this book to add to your library.

by George, William Pettingell (Author)
ISBN-10: 0978648706
ISBN-13: 978-0978648701
Like most modern Christians, I have read many of the wonderful books on Christ.
There is a mountain of teaching material on His power, might, dominion, reign and
glory, and this is a very good thing. George Pettingell's book, "Teach Me, Lord
to Dance" helps us look at Jesus Christ as "God Made in The Flesh". It is like
being transported back to that time when Christ walked the earth. We are there with
Him, walking with Him, talking to Him; He is listening to us and His responses are
clear, in plain language and easy to understand. These are the things that make
this book revolutionary.
The Grace, Mercy and humanness of Christ flow out of this dialog like cool water
from a bottomless well. His claim to the Throne of Heaven is made early, often,
and without reservation. The different aspects of Christ (God, Man, Savior, Creator
and Judge) are brought out in clear, simple, and plain language, so much so that
it is at times shocking. The most amazing portrayal here is of Christ's grace,
because if there is enough grace for Christ to submit to this interview, there is
surely enough grace for you and me.
