Bypassing the question of whether you can ever go home again, Milan Kundera's Ignorance tackles instead what happens when you actually get there. Ignorance is the story of two Czechs who meet by chance while traveling back to their homeland after 20 years in exile. Irena, who fled the country in 1968 with her now-deceased husband Martin, returns to Prague only to find coldness and indifference on the part of her former friends. Josef, who emigrated after the Russian invasion, is back in Prague to fulfill a wish of his beloved late wife. As fate would have it, the two have met before in their former lives, and the before-skirted passionate encounter is now destined to transpire. However, as in the story of Odysseus, which this novel so deliberately parallels, every homecoming brings with it a conflicting set of emotions so powerful that one has to question whether the voyage is really worth the pain. Expertly tackling the philosophical and emotional themes of nostalgia, memory, love, loss, and endurance, Kundera continues to astound readers with his masterful ability to understand and articulate issues so central to the human condition. --Gisele Toueg

Book Description

Irena and Josef meet by chance while returning to their homeland, which they had abandoned twenty years earlier. Will they manage to pick up the thread of their strange love story, interrupted almost as soon as it began and then lost in the tides of history? The truth is that after such a long absence "their memories no longer match."

This was an account of the move from one world to another and how if affected both the person who left for a better life and those who were left behind. It is a good way to see the world through the eyes of an emigre and the deep changes such a move creates in relationships among friends and family.

It's been a while since I've read Milan Kundera but I'm glad I've started reading his recent work. I loved THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING years ago.

I picked up IGNORANCE because I was intrigued with the idea of two Czechs returning to their homeland after 20 years and resuming their relationship. While the novel doesn't chronicle the "love story" between Irena and Josef (most of the novel traces their journeys home that leads to their meeting), it does expose how unreliable our memories and interactions can be.
What we've done, what we remember, how we move on.
As usual, Kundera delivers more than what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go home again.......2006-07-12

"Ignorance" is a story about memory: how much are we actually capable of remembering and how often do our memories fail us? In this novel, two characters encounter each other at a Paris airport during a return trip to Prague. Josef and Irena both fled the country twenty years ago during the Russian invasion. When they bump into each other at the airport, Irena immediately remembers an encounter she had with Josef some twenty years beforehand. Unfortunately, Joseph has no memory of her, although he chooses to keep that information to himself. They exchange phone numbers and agree to meet up again in Prague. Before that happens, the reader is treated to a series of flashbacks. We learn that Irena left Prague because her first husband, Martin, was wanted by the authorities. Josef was disgusted by Communism and left to start over in Denmark. Both characters have built new lives for themselves and are haunted by the memories that resurface when they return to the country they once called home. Additionally, there are many new and annoying aspects of Prague that they have to adjust to, and the old acquaintances that Josef and Irena once knew are now practically strangers to them.

Milan Kundera's novel parallels the story of Odysseus. Irena and Josef have both traveled long journeys and eventually returned home. They experience many conflicting emotions and feelings of nostalgia. Eventually Irena and Josef arrange another meeting, which turns into an incredibly painful experience for both of them.

There are many different themes in this book, but I think the biggest one is that people can't escape their pasts and they can't recreate their pasts, either, no matter how hard they try. "Ignorance" is a subtle but beautifully written book. Personally, I think it's incredibly sad and depressing, but the story is one that everyone will be able to relate to in some way, as we all have memories that we cherish and some that we'd give anything to forget.

This short book describes the feelings and perceptions of a Czech that emigrates to France during the communist era who returns to her homeland after many years. It will surely be a delightful read for those living away from their home countries.

But the issues are universal: How does human memory work? What is the difference between what we remember and what we would like to remember? How do other people remember us? Are we freed by the future or captured by the past? Aparently simple questions that Kundera magnificantly puts to the readers throught this beautiful novel.

I doubt this is Kundera's masterpiece. But it is short, interesting, and enjoyable. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Ignorance.......2005-09-13

Ignorance, by Milan Kundera, is a small novel but big on ideas. Playing like a watered down Odyssey, two Czech émigrés return to post-communist Prague after twenty years. A chance meeting in the airport stirs memories of long ago that leads to an interesting study of our memory, its limits and unreliability, and how, in our ignorance, we can take it for granted and trust it too much.

Irena fled to France during the Russian invasion; Josef to Denmark. Both have built new lives, made new friends, and forgotten who they were. After the fall of European communism in 1989, they return to their city only to find that it's no longer theirs; it's full of tourists, whores, and restaurants the Czechs can't afford. A chance sighting in the airport causes Irena to engage Josef in conversation; she remembers him from a conversation twenty years ago. They agree to meet, and, as the novel builds up to their rendezvous, they go about their homecomings - meeting parents, friends, and, ultimately, themselves - to discover that Prague is no longer home.

Stylistically, the book is a dream. Although little happens in the novel - a conversation here, a wander there - it is the narrator's asides that gels the experience, wandering off into philosophical mode, or giving atypical history lessons - all the time, maintaining a poetic tone. The prose is terse, but just right to create the surreal atmosphere it needs to succeed. It wanders effortlessly between the different characters and the lessons learned from their actions.

The characters are well drawn, although their focus is completely on their homecoming, their memory, and doubts about their patriotism. Their actions are believable; their conversations intelligent. Prague, as a character, is underdone - little of the city is given, and, after twenty years, it would have been nice to know the visible changes that time has wrought.

Overall, Kundera has provided an appealing novel, doubtless inspired by his own circumstances as a Czech émigré. While it may not be to the tastes of all (i.e. those seeking action) it does endow us with food for thought, something to consider about our memories. And, at least for me, the true thrill was watching how the philosophical and historical asides came together to complete the novel, and reinforce the characters' feelings.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best of the "Dilbert" books.......2007-09-15

And that's saying quite a lot, given how funny all of the "Dilbert" books are. For those of you who've just stepped off a plane from outer Mongolia, or some other sufficiently isolated place that you're unfamiliar with the "Dilbert" books, the basic concept is that they are collections of newspaper comic strips dealing with life in corporate America; the characters generally resonate with anyone who's had to work in a modern office and deal with the foolishness foisted on employees by clueless bureaucrats and other bosses.

Any "Dilbert" book is worth reading; this one is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-11-03

Well worth your hard-earned wage-slave dollars.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Cartoons, But Linited To The Office Workplace.......2002-08-18

I enjoy the Dilbert cartoons as much as most fans and have found many office truths in the skillful cartoons. Yet, a typical company workplace does not only consist of office life. In most companies there are also extensive research and develoment departments and an array of managers from technical to the self-important CEOs, which are rarely mentioned and dealt with in these cartoons. In this way I find the Dilbert cartoons to be limited and one-sided in their portrayal of real company worklife. I worked in a major company for many years, so I felt much has been left out. If you'd like to get a better feel for the kind of true-to-life examples of workplace "vices" and managerial traits that can eventually lead to ENRON, Worldcom etc., then I would like to suggest the real sharp satire, "MANAGEMENT BY VICE" by C.B. Don. It does have a sprinkling of hilarious pen&ink drawings, but it is the fast flowing text that is really worth reading and thinking about. Well, Dilbert has his famous place in the office and many cheers for that, but I believe that "Management By Vice" complements the Dilbert cartoons with a whole new, company-wide perspective...after all, you don't see the inside scoop on a grievance procedure or the meaning of the "Doughnut Deal" in the Dilbert series...and even the flippant Company CEO and his self-serving management staff are deservedly exposed!

        Description:
This paper exposits a novel technique for the ranking and classification of objects to a particular state. Each object is described by measurements from a number of variables which may offer different levels of support for the individual objects to be associated with the two states, a given hypothesis and not the hypothesis. The Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence is a central component of this technique. This allows for a measure of concomitant ignorance, which may encompass the precision of the individual measurements as well as the possible ambiguity of their influence in the subsequent classification of objects. The level of ignorance present influences the utilisation of the technique as a tool for the ranking or classification of objects. A simplex plot method of representing data allows a clear visual representation (interpretation) to the degree of interaction of the support from the variables to the ranking or classification of the objects. To illustrate the proposed technique, the application considered here is the elucidation of the risk of corporate failure of a number of companies. Subsequently, each variable (financial and non-financial) may offer support for the ranking and classification of companies to between the extreme states of being a failed or non-failed company. A comparison on the ranking and classification of companies is made with a traditional multivariate discriminant analysis.

          Description:
This is the second part of a two-part paper which offers a new approach to the valuation of ecosystem goods and services. In the first part a simple pre-industrial model was introduced to show how the interdependencies between the three subsystems, society, economy and nature, influence values, and how values change over time. In this second part the assumption of perfect foresight is dropped. I argue that due to novelty and complexity ex ante unpredictable change occurs within the three subsystems society, economy and nature. Again the simple pre-industrial model, which was introduced in part 1, serves as a simple paradigm to show how unpredictable novel change limits the possibility to derive accurate estimates of values.

          Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

          Book Description

What in the name of Thor could be making this Viking so blue? --Eating haggis? --Listening to those screechy bagpipes? --Searching for an inept witch? --Wearing a blue face mark? --Traveling through Scotland with the world's worst poet? For Rurik the Viking, life has not been worth living since he left Maire of the Moors. Oh, it's not that he misses her fiery red tresses or kiss-some lips. Nay, it's the embarrassing blue zigzag she put on his face after their one wild night of loving. For a fierce warrior who prides himself on his immense height, his expertise in bedsport, and his well-honed muscles, this blue streak is the last straw. Now he's vowed he'll put his own brand of "mark" on Maire--a man-mark. In the end, he'll bring the witchling to heel, or die trying. Mayhap, he'll even beg her to wed...so long as she can promise he'll no longer be...THE BLUE VIKING.

          4 out of 5 stars It's a good read........2006-05-17

I've read the Bewitched Viking and was curious how Ruik would act in a romance. I did like this book and thought the romance between the two main characters was entertaining. I especially like the end of this book as well as the Bewitched Viking where the crazy family gets together and hounds the idiot hero to finally marry the heroine. The family group gets larger with each subsequent book. But I will say the original Ruik of the Bewitched Viking only has looks and sexual experience in common with the Ruik of the Blue Viking. This Ruik claims he never beats women. Of course he does. In the Bewitched Viking he beat Alinor, Tikor's then future wife, and even tried to kill her a few times because of his illogical belief that she was a witch. Other men had to constantly stop him from abusing her. He was pretty mean to all women, and I was pleasently surprized to see by this book that he had a personality overhall or lots of therapy and anger management classes. Something had to give with him.

          5 out of 5 stars Always a Riot.......2006-03-27

This is the story of Rurik and Maire and is one of many books in Ms. Hill's Viking series. One thing Sandra Hill is a master of is knowing how to blend comedy, romance, sex, and adventure into impossible to put down entertaining stories. Several years before, Rurik met and took Maire's virginity. Rurik being the typical unfeeling man of that time, Maire punishes him by marking him with a blue streak down his face and then disappears. Rurik tracks her down several years later to have her remove the mark. Rurik is not the brightest and believes Maire to be a witch. He is also surprised to find that she now has a young son, of course everyone but him sees he is the boy's father(they are mirror images). This book is never disappointing, and always a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Best read in a long time.......2003-12-23

I haven't really liked characters in a book in quite a while. Rurik is charming even when being a lout and he's really hard not to like. Maire reminds me of my aunts who roll their eyes at the goofy antics of my uncles, although they are being a bit annoying they are hard not to love. It's a wonderful light hearted charming story. Great read!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Sandra Hill Book.......2003-08-18

I have re-read this book at least five times and I still laugh out loud.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, stale storyline.......2002-04-05

I have been reading quite a few of Sandra Hill's books but this is one of the worst she has written. She seems to have run out of fresh ideas for her story and the characters seem rather stilted and totally silly. Definitely not worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Blue cat will warm your heart.......2000-06-26

The Baby Blue cat who said NO is a simply illustrated book with lots of repetition for toddlers who seem to love it so.Baby Blue cat gives his mother a difficult time throughout the day by repeating the mantra of every two year old as an answer to every question posed to him. Mama cat is exasperated by the end of the day. My son asked for this book to be read almost every day when he was around two, somehow I never tired of it.Read this book to your toddler and you will see why.

I bought this delightful book years ago for my older child. She and I read it over and over again and now we read it with our younger child. The book paints a sweet family scene of a mother cat and her kittens. One particular kitten, Baby Blue Cat, doesn't like to go along with the mother's nightly rituals and learns a lesson about cooperation. The kitten stills keeps her/his spirit and spunk and my kids can really relate with Baby Blue Cat. They love the part where they can yell the kitten's line -- "and then Baby Blue Cat said 'NO!' " It's delightful. All my friends who have read it also love the book. I had not been able to locate the book until now, and I was thrilled to see you have it. "Baby Blue Cat who says no" should be in every young kid's library. I highly reccommend this book. Thanks, Ainslie Pryor!

5 out of 5 stars An enduring favorite.......2006-10-25

I picked up this book quite by chance, and it has become an enduring family favorite (we have 8 children). Little ones can quite easily empathize with Baby Blue Cat's being tempted and eating more cookies than he intended, and it is reassuring to them to see that mommies still love their babies even when they make mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2004-06-11

I was given a copy of this book when I was seven years old, and it was one of my very favorites. Now as an adult it is the only kids book I have kept and I can't wait to read it to my sister's baby who will be born in august. This book is wonderful and the pictures are adorable. It is a great addition to any little one's library.

This was a beautiful book by Ainslie Pryor. The soft illustrations, a little bit of humor, and a wonderfully kind mother cat made it a book that my son and I loved together when he was little. I wanted to buy this as a gift for my new nephew and was very disappointed to find that it's out of print.

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Story.......2000-11-09

I used this book while reading to Kindergarten students. The concept of making a mistake and eating all the cookies was easy for them to understand. The pictures were simple and fun. They predicted events and dialogue, reading along with me. If the repetition in this book had been a bit more consistant, I would have given it a full 5 stars.
