2 out of 5 stars It's hard to be drawn into this book.......2007-09-05

Like others, I felt compelled to write a review of this book. Many others have taken offense at how this book changes the origin story of Kyle Rayner. However, it was easier for me, because I was not familiar with his origin before reading this book. Yet, I can understand how changing the foundation of a beloved character is disturbing. I was simply looking for a good story about the green lantern, so I was open to giving the author creative license to create a good tale.
Unfortunately, I found it very hard to like Kyle Rayner or even accept him as a believable character. Kyle is loaded with personal problems which is evident in his extreme difficulty accepting the role of the green lantern. However, he does not come across as the young adult who is the troubled loner or the misunderstood nerd that we come to love through the narration of the book. His unlikeable traits are not balanced out with anything that would lead me to be connected with Kyle in his journey, or even feel empathy for his strange and juvenile behavior. Specifically, Kyle is a bad communicator even when he communicates an idea well to the reader--he fails to communicate the idea to the other characters in the book. Additionally, he is a slow thinker that often has to retreat from hours to days to consider a problem. He also fails to notice the obvious. For example,if I was somehow changed into some superhero with unknown powers, wouldn't it be natural to see if I had the power to fly? You'll be surprised how long it takes Kyle. And, Rayner throughout most of the book just can't seem to have a sliver of fun with the ring. I just find it hard to connect with someone who's idea of fun after receiving a super powerful ring is to make a comfortable chair to brood.
The problem of not connecting with Kyle Rayner is exacerbated by the fact that he is the narrator, so there is no escape from his bad jokes, poor thinking and bad behavior throughout the entire book. So I am left feeling that I just don't like much about Kyle even when he starts to shed his slacker ways.
I read "about the author" at the end of the book. I was shocked to find out that Dennis O'Neil is not only a veteran comic book writer but actually gives writing workshops. I can only assume that this novel must be an anomaly, and that his work elsewhere is much better because he has celebrated success for many years at both Marvel and DC.

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-30

This one became interestingly philosophical. A nice thing to do, given how the Lanterns work, plus, it had Hal and Kyle, a neat trick. This does show the origin of Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern, and how hopeless he is to start with. He picks it up though, and later on he ends up in a thought construct with Hal Jordan, and another representation of a hero, which involves some more in depth discussion of being a GL.

4 out of 5 stars a heros quest indeed.......2007-08-24

I give this book 4 of 5 because I read it in under 2 days...so that means i was hooked. the beginning was a little shaky, its written from Kyle's point of view. like a memoir or a biography. very strange and it takes some time getting used too. but the plot and characters are strong and well as the setting and the overall theme. i would have preferred that the book be about the bestest green lantern: Hal Jordan, alas it was about Kyle Raynor and its rocky beginning as the new Green Lantern. but, its still good. if the book actually follows the real beginning of Kyle Raynor... I have no idea. I never read his comics. but like I said, I was hooked and loved the fact that I got to see the beginning of Kyle's career. That's also why I loved Helltown, that's about the beginning of The Question. also very cool!

3 out of 5 stars An oddly mixed bag.......2007-02-13

1. O'Neil should know this character, and the DCU, a lot better than he seems to. Instead, he intentionally veers wildly off from DCU continuity -- not little fanboy stickling, but major pieces of the character and the world vary significantly from the "canon." Why?

2. The best part of the book, as noted elsewhere, is the beginning, where Kyle is learning how to actually use the ring.

3. The weakest part (aside from #1) is the endless Cosmic Stuff -- which, as also noted, takes up much of the book and works far less well in print than it might have with pictures. Or maybe not.

4. Kyle's characterization is solid and entertaining. Everyone else (in the JLA, the Oans, Hal Jordan, etc.) are cardboard cut-outs.

Not a bad book. Just, disappointingly, not a good one.

2 out of 5 stars An OK read till the middle..........2006-06-13

It starts out very well by going into the action and it is well written until you get to the center of the novel. At that time I felt that I needed a college degree to get thru the rest of it. The book goes into a metaphysical, scientifical, and all other ifical reasons and explanations for the origin of heroes.

Not what I thought when I saw it. i read one other Justice League novel and it was almost the same way. This has turned me off to this type of novel.

Use your money to go and get a comic book, it is better in my opinion.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

      Book Description

In her gripping novels, New York Times bestselling author Carla Neggers combines action, intrigue, romance and adventure like no one else . . .

Archaeologist Sarah Dunnemore is prepared for almost anything when she returns to her family home in Night's Landing, Tennessee . . .except the news that her twin brother, Rob, has just been seriously wounded in a sniper attack in Central Park. She rushes to New York to be with him, only to come up against no-nonsense Nate Winter, who was slightly wounded in the attack.

In his work as a deputy U.S. marshal, Nate is the best, but he's willing to break the rules to track down his and Rob's would-be killer. Nate believes the official investigation is going in the wrong direction -- especially when he learns that Sarah is like a surrogate daughter and confidante to her family's famous Night's Landing neighbor -- the president of the United States.

When Nate suspects that Sarah has held back crucial information, he follows her to Night's Landing. Because Nate will let nothing -- not his and Sarah's growing attraction for each other, not the mounting danger they face -- stand in the way of the truth. But in a place filled with betrayal, greed and long-held secrets, truth is guarded with a deadly vengeance.

3 out of 5 stars Light suspense with a little too much going on.......2006-09-07

Historical archeologist Sarah Dunnmore has just returned from Europe with hopes for a break - but she is summoned to his twin brother's bedside after Rob and his US Marshal partner Nate Winter are gunned down in Central Park. Nate forms an instant attraction to Sarah and agrees to follow her back to Tennessee to watch over her for Rob, as it appears that the attack had more to do with Rob and his family's long-standing relationship with current US President Wes Poe than the case they currently put to rest.

While back at the modest homestead of the Dunnmore clan, Nate runs into Ethan the mysterious caretaker, who has his own reasons for being near the Dunnmores, and a noisy reporter trying to gain access to the President through Sarah. Meanwhile, their mother and father are in Holland on a business trip, where she runs into Nicholas Janssen a former flame (seems mom was quite a party girl in her day - she romanced Wes as well) in search of a presidential pardon for his IRS misdeeds. Nicholas has more to hide than unfilled taxes, and needs a pardon to return to the US.

Readers beware - this is the middle book in a series of six (so far), and leaves loose ends to be continued in future volumes. Despite this, the story can partially stand on its own merits, though there is far too much going on and too many characters to keep track of. But the open ending is a shameless practice of milking the reader that far too many authors engage in.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely must be read in the proper order to enjoy.......2006-08-03

I want to start by telling you what order to read these books in. The Winter family saga begins in a short story told in the book "On the Edge", followed by "Cold Ridge." The next is "Night's Landing", then "The Rapids" and finally "Dark Sky." If you read the books out of order, you are less likely to want to go back to read what the author keeps reiterating throughout the series.

As far as Night's Landing goes, it was a fairly enjoyable read. More so for the continuing story of the Winter family, than any heavy romance or hold you to the edge of your seat suspense. The characters were likable and the story line moved along quickly.

I was a little reluctant wanting to read any of these books having read the reviews, but wasn't disappointed entirely. "Night's Landing" is a quick read and fairly easy to follow if you are familiar with the other stories. There are a lot of characters, many returning from previous novels, that can be confusing for some, but not difficult to figure out as the book reads on.

      Is it worth the money?
As part of the series, yes. Alone, no.

3 out of 5 stars Better if Series Read in Order.......2005-09-24

It may not be fair that review this book as I was only able to skim through it. I just so happen to discover I had this one in my collection. However, having already read The Rapids, and Dark Sky first, it was hard to go back through all that was already revealed the the two books that come after this one.

I hated The Rapids, however Dark Sky, and Nights Landing were enjoyable enough. I really love Juliet's character. Her story with Booker is told in Dark Sky, but you get a taste of her in this book. I would recomment this book, but I would recommend they be read in order. I understand that there are two more that come even before this one.

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING, THRILLING, ROMANTIC.......2004-05-12

Ms. Neggers has once again proved she is at the top of her game with Night's Landing. U.S. Marshall Nate Winter's is a down to earth hero who will do what it takes to get the truth even if it means breaking the rules (my kind of man). Sarah Dunnemore is his partner's sister with close ties to the current U.S. President and his family. Nate and Sarah meet when both Nate and Sarah's brother Rob are shot by a sniper. What follows is a thrilling, suspenseful, romantic story. Ms. Neggers insightful characters, political savy and interaction between Nate and Sarah gives the reader one great read. I highly recommend this book.

Carla Neggers is a good author. I usually love her books, however, I am very tired of political, suspense novels. All of the books about the Winters family have some politics in them, but this had so much political stuff it turned me off.

Nate Winters is the brother of Antonia Winters who married Hank Callahan in a previous book. He of course was running for senator. He won.

Nate is also the brother of Carine Winters who finally married Tyler North in another novel.

This book highlights a wonderful family, the Dunnemores. Rob is a deputy Marshall, Sarah, his twin, is a historical archeologist. By the time you finish this book you'll know what that is. We also have their parents, grandparents, and the President of the United States, who thinks of Sarah as his own.

With that list of characters not to mention the list of bad guys, this book could have been 2 or 3 books.

I am just tired of politics. My daughter bought the book for me. She read it and said it was a nice read.

This novel is not about normal people. Okay, so maybe I mean regular people. I just could not get into the story, or the romance.

As a obsessive reader I did read it all. I couldn't help it. If I start a book I have to finish it. But I wish I hadn't started this one.

With this many familiar characters you would think the book would flow easily and entertainingly. But it did not for me.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A642724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Friction Stir Processing (FSP), although relatively simple in concept, results in an extremely complex thermomechanical treatment to the material being processed. Previous studies of FSP have shown that the process results in extremely high strain, strain rates and temperatures as well as gradients in strain, strain rate and temperature within a small volume of material. This thesis will study the effect of varying FSP parameters during the processing of Nickel-Aluminum- Bronze (NAB) propeller material. The modeling program CTH was used to define the relationship between tool rotation speed, traversing speed and the total power input to the material. The tool s mechanical power and the power generated by deformation of the material has been investigated. The modeling experiments were designed to gain an understanding of the relationship of process parameters, microstructure and mechanical properties, and to enhance our understanding of the flow patterns and thermal histories of the NAB material in the stir zone.

              Book Description

With its remote coves and miles of unpopulated shores, the West Coast has always lured individuals who felt they could outrun the law and smuggle illegal items such as drugs or weapons for money or in some cases, to avoid government regulations and restrictions.

Night Landing is a chronicle of the underbelly of trade along the Pacific coastline. It covers the tales of smuggling from the early days of exploration and the settling of the West to the present with stories right out of today's headlines. It features a gallery of criminals, some ingenious, all over-optimistic, and their eventual apprehension, through underestimating the hazards of illegal trade. This unusual book describes activities such as smuggling drugs, people, freon, AK-47s, sea otters, and diamonds off the coast of the Pacific - and looks at the motivations of the criminals behind this world of illegal trade.

Mr. Heron...I was engaged in the little known legal/illegal transport of consumer goods contraband between the U.S. and Mexico in the 1980s. This was legal when departing U.S. Customs on the U.S./Mexican border but turned illegal when crossing the Rio Grande flying south & thus violating Mexican law. I would like to collaborate with you on a book in the telling of very unique & exciting tales of our flying, crashing, Mexican prisons, close brushes with death & escapes & evasions by Gringo pilots throughout Mexico.

Many pilots died as a result of overloaded aircraft at night in mountainous terrain or trying to make a landing at a fog shrouded airstrip. Even more exciting are the tales of pilots, who upon suffering engine failure or being shot up by Mexican Customs, were able to make miraculous landings in the middle of nowhere. For example, a Cessna 207 with engine failure landed on a beach north of Tampico. His buddy in another 207 landed, got a long rope & tied it to the disabled aircraft's propellar hub & towed this aircraft home to Brownsville. This was flying from the "old days," the last of "seat of the pants" aviation. It's a story that should be told. I have many stories & photos as well as contacts to other pilots & individuals involved.
