The only person who gets called Ballardesque more often than Chuck Palahniuk is, well... J.G. Ballard. So, does Portland, Oregon's "torchbearer for the nihilistic generation" deserve that kind of treatment? Yes and no. There is a resemblance between Fight Club and works such as Crash and Cocaine Nights in that both see the innocuous mundanities of everyday life as nothing more than the severely loosened cap on a seething underworld cauldron of unchecked impulse and social atrocity. Welcome to the present-day U.S. of A. As Ballard's characters get their jollies from staging automobile accidents, Palahniuk's yuppies unwind from a day at the office by organizing bloodsport rings and selling soap to fund anarchist overthrows. Let's just say that neither of these guys are going to be called in to do a Full House script rewrite any time soon.
But while the ingredients are the same, Ballard and Palahniuk bake at completely different temperatures. Unlike his British counterpart, who tends to cast his American protagonists in a chilly light, holding them close enough to dissect but far enough away to eliminate any possibility of kinship, Palahniuk isn't happy unless he's first-person front and center, completely entangled in the whole sordid mess. An intensely psychological novel that never runs the risk of becoming clinical, Fight Club is about both the dangers of loyalty and the dreaded weight of leadership, the desire to band together and the compulsion to head for the hills. In short, it's about the pride and horror of being an American, rendered in lethally swift prose. Fight Club's protagonist might occasionally become foggy about who he truly is (you'll see what I mean), but one thing is for certain: you're not likely to forget the book's author. Never mind Ballardesque. Palahniukian here we come! --Bob Michaels
Book Description
The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club.
Chuck Palahniuk's outrageous and startling debut novel that exploded American literature and spawned a movement. Every weekend, in the basements and parking lots of bars across the country, young men with white-collar jobs and failed lives take off their shoes and shirts and fight each other barehanded just as long as they have to. Then they go back to those jobs with blackened eyes and loosened teeth and the sense that they can handle anything. Fight club is the invention of Tyler Durden, projectionist, waiter, and dark, anarchic genius, and it's only the beginning of his plans for violent revenge on an empty consumer-culture world.

Awesome!.......2007-09-06
The movie, amazing;
the book, a masterpiece;
after reading the book, you see what the movie was trying to do,
granted i think the movie did a good job, but the book was amazing, there's so much more detail, it has more of the love story element that the movie left out, it's has so much more of a grunge feel and it really makes you think;
it ends differently than the movie, and i'm not sure which ending i like better, but i love them both.
if you're a Chuck fan or a Fight Club fan, get this book.
s'all i have to say
Groundbreaking.......2007-08-16
Fight Club is an amazing book. It's very short and easy to read-- actually, I don't think you "read" Fight Club. I think you.. inhale it. If that makes any sense. Combine Nietzsche with designer drugs (a lot of designer drugs), and you have Fight Club. Reading it is an incredible experience; you feel as if you're part of something bigger than yourself, something revolutionary. After reading it, you just might feel the urge to go out and buy yourself all of the required items, and then try to locate the house on Paper Street so you can join Tyler's army.
Go. Read it, and you too can be a part of the Revolution.
the most quotable book ever.......2007-07-17
there are those who have read it and there are those who aren't worth talking to.
Better than the movie.......2007-06-27
Let me start by saying that Fight Club is one of my favorite movies, but I had never read the book. Chuck Palahniuk is an amazing writer- especially considering that this is his first novel. While it is very similar to the movie, I still found it very enjoyable despite the fact that obviously you know what is going to happen. I loved this book and just went and bought two more by Palahniuk.
Quick Read........2007-06-26
You just can not put this book down. It's amazing. The movie spoiled it for me a bit but not that much. The only dilemma was in knowing the movie's ending. If you watch that ending and read this one's then you'll be a bit disappointed. Chuck himself even claimed the movie's ending was better.
I love this book though. It's great.
Book Description
The House of Representatives - the people's House - is supposed to most closely reflect the needs and desires of ordinary citizens. But over the past decade, House leaders fearful of losing power have torn the House from its roots. The creation of politically safe, more ideologically-tilted congressional districts through redistricting has cemented this shift and seated more politicians from both the extreme left and right. Fight Club Politics will show how we have come to the point where average Americans have little say over what happens in the House, and what can be done about it.

Good Read.......2007-01-11
I eagerly purchased this book after seeing Eilperin on the Daily Show over the summer. It is a short book, and was somewhat disappointing. If you have read either Culture War? by Morris Fiorina, or The Myth of a Polarized America by Gary Jacobson then this book may be a bit of a novice read. Eilperin's book seems like an elongated term paper on polarization of the House, and it cites its sources in just that manner. It tells many tales that further the perception of polarization, with countless interviews of Congressman, Senators and staffers, but offers little analysis of their impact beyond the obvious. All in all, it was a good book, not great, but good. If you want to see examples of polarization in the House, read this book. If you want empirical proof of how it happened, and predictions of its relevance, try something a little more in depth.
Fight Club Politics.......2007-01-10
Puzzled about how Congress became seduced by lobbyist ? Eilperin shows how changes by the Rules Committee concentrated powers in the hands of the Leadership and enabled this influence. In as much that Newt Gingrish may run for President and the changes occurred while he was Speaker, the lessons are relevant now. This book deserves to be read widely because of the lessons it can teach.
Go Immediately to Page 49 of Juliet Eilperin's Splendid Work.......2006-11-21
I am writing this review about two weeks after the elections of 2006. Needless to add, the Democrats took control of both houses of Congress. Juliet Eilperin writes the following on page 49:
"...the House has always been a majoritarian institution, where the party in control imposes its vision on the chamber.
This strategy has encouraged Democrats to become even more partisan, however, because they have nothing invested in the measures Hastert brings to the House floor. It has also prompted GOP leaders to rush through legislation with little oversight, short-circuiting the public debate that often exposes a bill's potential flaws."
Let's be blunt: the Democrats can no longer claim to be a beleaguered minority. Will they behave better than their former alleged persecutors? Well, we will find out soon enough. The author argues convincingly that common courtesy and fairness are virtues often not practiced within the walls of the House of Representatives. Both parties have been guilty of pushing their weight around when they are in the driver's seat. This book should be required reading for every member of Congress. Eilperin not only cites numerous horror stories of past abuses---she offers suggestions on how to improve matters. Perhaps you might wish to consider purchasing a copy for your own representative? And yes, you also need to read it. It is ultimately the fault of the voters if matters do not improve. We are the ones with the real power. Our congressmen and women work for us!

A history of the House, its actions, and how past decisions differ from modern times.......2006-08-16
The House of Representatives is supposed to be closest to the desires of ordinary citizens - but in reality it's lost its way and in recent years are more fixed on power plays than consumer representation: that's the message of FIGHT CLUB POLITICS: HOW PARTISANSHIP IS POISONING THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Here's an important survey for any who would understand modern politics: it provides a history of the House, its actions, and how past decisions differ from modern times.

Explains Why the House is so Extreme.......2006-06-26
The creation of politically safe, more ideologically tilted congressional seats through redistricting has cemented the Republican hold on power and made the House of Representatives unrepresentative - so charges Eilperin in "Fight Club Politics." Republicans take about two-thirds of committee seats, even though they had only 52.9% of the vote in '94. Another "innovation" was having leadership PACs dole out money, instead of challengers, junior lawmakers, and possibly more independent lawmakers.
Thirty years ago new members were more likely to move their families to D.C., eager to become part of the social scene. Families often socialized with each other, regardless of party. This lifestyle disappeared in the late '80's and early '90s - especially after Armey and Gingrich warned the Class of '94 to keep their families away from the D.C. The intent was to focus on one's district, and members became "Tuesday to Thursday" legislators.
Rather than seeking a comfortable bipartisan majority for their initiatives, GOP leaders now focus on securing 218 votes on their side so they can craft bills as conservative as possible. Thus, the Democrats have become irrelevant. Given the Republicans' slight majority, floor amendments are banned 78% of the time. Sixty percent of all bills are exempted from the requirement of at least 48 hours to review bills, and nearly 40% come off the printer after 8 P.M. (Result: Democrats had one hour before the vote on a 3,000 page $1 trillion budget bill.)
House tradition dictated that the minority party got to send delegates of its choice to conference committees - no longer. Term-limiting committee chairs, and filling those positions via leadership decision (vs. seniority) has further augmented leadership power. Members now are also required to donate campaign funds to retain choice assignments.
Bottom Line: Gerrymandering + closed primaries creates much more extreme politics with a focus on primaries. Fixing the problem will require an end to gerrymandering. Several states have done this, Iowa being the most obvious, but there is a long way to go.

A funny tale my son and I both enjoy!.......2000-09-12
This story is written using sophisticated rhymes and tells a funny story most kids will identify with. My son asked to have this book read to him every night for weeks, and the clever writing kept it fun for me. I even memorized the book for car rides. It is definately one of my favorite books in his library.
This is a good book........1998-12-27
I am 4 years old and I like this book the best because they have a pillow fight. I like the pictures very much. The callerpittars are so funny. You should read this book.
A delightful, warmfuzzy, and cute bedtime story........1997-11-21
Caterpillow Fight is not only a great bedtime story but is quite charming. Is a tongue-tiwster at times. There is also a lesson at the end of this story which is a great learning experience. My 4-year granddaughter eagerly looked forward to hearing this story and rapidly learned to read it by herself due to the wonderful illustrations. The use of animals in realistic story matters are a great asset for young children. This book delivers all.

The Best!.......2005-04-19
SMS needs to hire 6 baby sitters to build a playground. But there is a problem. There are 9 baby sitters. Mary anne finally stood up to tomboy Kristy and challenged her on traveling abroad if she was planning to take a playground job in Stoneybrook. Now the fight is getting more serious by the minute. It's Abby, Stacey, Kristy vs. Mary anne and Claudia. as usual near the ending, they all apologize to each other at the ending. But still Kristy, Abby, stacey still travel abroad.
The Best Mary-Anne Book!.......2000-08-16
Mary-Anne was one of the more appealing characters. I like the way she finally stood up to bossy, big mouthed Kristy and challenged Kristy on traveling abroad if she was planning to take a playground job in Stoneybrook. Armed camps square off -- it's Abby, Stacey and Kristy vs. Claudia and Mary-Anne. Don't worry, folks, it all gets sorted out in the end. Kristy in typical fashion runs off at the mouth and insults everybody. By the penultimate chapter, apologies are abound and the story is neatly concluded with everyone being friends again. (And yes, Abby, Stacey and Kristy DO travel abroad while the others remain stateside). A light, entertaining read.
Intriguing view on competition..........1999-02-05
Mary Anne, who hates confrontation, is embroiled in a heated arguement over playground jobs. In the part where Kristy is arguing and tells Mary Anne to butt out, Logan shouldn't have butted in and snapped at Kristy. Mary Anne doesn't need Logan to fight her battles. If I were Mary Anne, I would have told him to butt out! Of course, Mary Anne's too polite for that, but I bet she was seething inside. It was good, though, that the BSC didn't let the arguement destroy their friendship and each one took responsibility for her part in the fight. That's why the BSC have a friendship that will last forever and ever...and a lifetime.
REALLY GREAT.......1998-11-01
This book was quite good, the baby sitter's are fighting but you cannot always be perfect! Everything turns out great in the end as usual-still a good read!
Anything can come between friends, but friendship is true........1998-07-17
SMS is looking for playground counselers and the BSC is best for the job.But there's only six jobs with nine BSC memebers trying out.A trip to Europe! Everyone wants to go,but is the playground job more important than the trip to Europe? The BSC is fighting over the playground job and have to decide which is more important, their friendship, the playground job or the trip to Europe.Who's going to get the jobs and will the BSC stop fighting and what about Europe?
Great book you'll love it!!!!

Boring.......2005-09-15
I got this book to check out how Dana Joy's book is like. The answer is I will not read another of her books. I was so disoriented and had such a hard time focus I had to give up a third way through the book. The storyline is awful. I would have assigned 0 if I could. Sorry. Julie Garwood and Judith McNaught are my favorite writers. It's hard to find anyone else as good as them.
New Spin on Regency Novels.......2005-02-08
I love Dara Joy books and this one was no exception.....it has the steamiest plot line I've ever read....also, there are several laugh out loud situations...I love it! Chloe, decides it is time to settle down but she can only think of one man she wants, so she sets the trap for the "Lord of Sex." John, a childhood friend of Chloe's is a confirmed rake. When Chloe tells him she wants to learn to be a female rake like him, well he can't take it and decides he wants her for himself. After several "training sessions" that will steam your windowns, John decides they must take the next step, marriage.
What is so great about this story is how a notorious, self proclaimed rake who's only goal in life is to sleep with as many women as possible can be taken down by one innocent virgin, his best friend from childhood. If this book doesn't convince you that reformed rakes make the best husbands, nothing will. However, the sex in this one can be a bit explicit, so if you are bothered by that don't read it. If you are already a Dara Joy fan, I do not need to sell this book to you. If not, please try it, you won't be disappointed.
tonight or never? NEVER.......2004-04-17
I read that there were others out there that actually enjoyed reading this book by dara joy. Are they serious? did they actually read the whole content of the book?
Lord Sex? Interesting...but the characters didn't convince me. Sure there were plenty of sex written into the book...but where was the romance? Ya know, the humor, the connection the courtship?
If you want to love the characters and the written word, read Judith McNaught's "Whitney, my love"
Here's an excerpt...
"Whitney instantly sensed his presence as if it were a tangible force, something powerful and magnetic. She even recognized the elusive, tangy scent of his cologne. But she scarcely recognized his voice; it was raw with emotion, a hoarse, aching whisper. "Miss Stone-I adore you." The shattering tenderness of the words sent a jolting tremor up Whitney's spine, reaction which was not lost on Clayton. He saw her stiffen, and for one chilling second he thought he'd only imagined what had happenedbetween them in the church, but then she took an imperceptible step backward. Very lightly, he felt her lean against him. His breath froze at the exquisite sensation of her body pressing against him. He dropped his hand to her waist, gently sliding it around in front of her, drawing her nearer and tighter to him. And she made no resistance at all...but stodd quietly in his embrace."
Hey, to each their own...
I love clever women!.......2003-06-26
The woman in this is clever! The love scenes are sensuous! The guy is oblivious, as men occasionally are :) It was fun to read. It reminded me a bit of Georgette Heyer's style, but a GREAT DEAL sexier. Lot's of laughter, lot's of plot twisting, Regency style, with a steamy relationship thrown in. Luckily, without an insipid female to have to deal with in the bargain.
Hugely funny, peopled with eccentrics.......2003-01-23
Here's a coming of age story - a cross between `Sabrina' and `The Scarlet Pimpernel'. Chloe - part French by birth, very French in temperament - has been in love with her friend Viscount John Sexton for years. Being a determined woman, who knows to get what she wants takes some risks, Chloe removes herself from his circle for a year and a half, time for her to mature from girl to woman, so that she can return as something more than a friend in John's eyes.
John, the `Lord of Sex', but not much else as his father gambled away his inheritance, is a rouge and libertine. He is well known amongst the ton for his affairs, and his nickname is of long standing. Chloe has always been dear to John, and is very much valued as a friend. He is startled by her transformation, but stunned by her admission that she wants to be just like him - in effect, Lady Sex. Chloe manipulates John into agreeing to marry her, so that she will be free to follow this path (never for one minute actually planning to go through with it). John agrees, because he cannot countenance Chloe putting her proposal to anyone else. And once he views Chloe as a sexual being, he finds he wants her for himself, and not to share. With Chloe comes her house, estate and charming, naughty grandmother, and household of eccentrics - all of whom John realises have made him feel at home. But not as much as Chloe does.
It's a simple story, and Dara Joy tells it well. There is plenty of steaminess in the book, as you'd expect from the Lord and Lady of Sex, and this is told with Joy's customary straightforward erotic style - not flowery or embellished, just hot.
The fun part is the escape from tragedy that is the French revolution and guillotine for the aristocracy, as more and more of those friends of Chloe's family rescued from jail and certain death by the Black Rose find sanctuary at their home. As they descend, much fun is had by Joy as they all attempt to get along. I particularly enjoyed the 7 Cyndreac brothers, and Baronne Dufond's hair accessories. Ms Joy clearly had fun writing this book, and it was also a joy to read.

The BEST book about Elvis.......2006-11-06
This is the best book I have read about Elvis and his true love and the daughter he never knew about. I have read this book over and over until the pages have fallen out. It makes me cry every time. I can only imagine what life would be like if he were still alive today. I suggest this to all Elvis fans - young and old
Are you lonesome tonight?.......2006-09-26
This book was AWESOME! I am a total Elvis fan and this book sent me through a sea of emotions and left me a bit numb...amazing story!
WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP.......2004-11-21
Gimme a break.......people, this book is nothing but the result of some woman in need of some cash--end of story.
First of all there are a number of "facts" in her book which are verifiably not true. During one of her supposed secret meetings with Elvis (during his trip to meet with Richard Nixon), she describes him as being dressed "wildly" in a purple suit. She obviously lifted this piece of info from Albert Goldman's book, because both Elvis' bodyguards at that time and photos clearly show that he was dressed in black, not purple.
Secondly, she writes that one day in 1953, she rode a rented horse up to the mountains in Memphis and lo and behold here comes Sir Lancelot (Elvis) riding up behind her where the spend the night together up there. Uh, the only place you could rent a horse in Memphis in 1953 was the local fairgrounds and the horses were NOT allowed off the property.
Plus, it is a well-known fact that Elvis had a major problem having sex with a woman who had had children. Something inside him, just turned off. This subject was dealt with in the books "Elvis, What Happened"? by his bodyguards, and in "Elvis and Me" by Priscilla Presley. Elvis was greatly attracted to innocent young girls, not women who looked like they had been run through the mill. Sorry, but that was just his way.
what really nailed her coffin is when she was on a talk show several years ago with her daughter Desiree. Someone asked what colour Ms. Barbin's eyes were. She said "brown". She was then asked what colour Desiree's eyes were. She said "green". It's a well known fact of course, that Elvis had blue eyes. What's not so well known is that it's genetically impossible for someone with brown eyes and someone with blue eyes to have an offspring with green eyes. When this fact was presented to Lucy de Barbin on national TV, she stumbled and stuttered over her words, tried back tracking and said "well, her eyes are really blue." Can you say: 'Liar'?
Another problem with Lucy de Barbin's "story", is that not one single person who was close to Elvis all those years can verify anything about what she claims. Elvis was rarely alone and if he indeed had an affair with Ms. de Barbin, SOMEONE would have been able to say "yep, I remember all those times when E was meeting with Lucy." Guess what? Not one single person remembers her.
Plus, Elvis couldn't keep his mouth shut---about anything. He would blab to his bodyguards about anyone and they knew about all the girls he was fooling around with. Guess what? He never mentioned her ONCE to anyone.
Seeing as this book was written before DNA testing was around, I would be very interested to see if Lucy de Barin's daughter would be willing to submit to a DNA test, and compare it with Lisa Marie Presley's to see if it's a match. I guarantee that it won't be.
Overall, this book is ridiculous and if you believe the nonsense that Ms. de Barbin tells, then I've got some swamp land in Florida to sell you.
lonely book.......2004-08-21
As an avid Elvis fan, I was really disappointed with this book. I went in very cautiously, not wanting to believe a word of it. The more I read, the more I started to believe Lucy's story. As the book went on I got bored with the same story telling, the same lines, the same everything. By the end of the book, I was still skeptical. Nowhere is Lucy mentioned in his life. Any other biographies omit her name completely. With that many people in Elvis' life at that time someone would know something more than what is told. I'm not sure of the story being true. I am sure of the story being pretty boring at times. Worth reading? Sure, if you can get it for a penny plus shipping.
well i tought it was bad.......2004-07-20
First of all i didnt believe the book for one minute. It was false. Its the worst book ive ever read.I cant belive pppl liked it.
