In Elisabeth Harvor's oddly captivating first novel, Excessive Joy Injures the Heart, Claire Vornoff, a 37-year-old Ottawa woman, is having trouble sleeping. After sampling other body work, like reflexology, from a variety of creepy healers, she sends herself through a course of acupuncture and miscellaneous alternative treatments with the quietly charismatic Declan Farrell. One of the difficulties that she has been trying to address in therapy is her openness to men, her selflessness, her goodness, and it comes as no surprise to either Claire or the reader that she falls in love with Dr. Farrell, who aims to challenge all of this. As well as the "dull" breathing exercises he leads her through each week, his treatment includes poking at Claire like an irritating younger brother to see how (and if) she will defend herself. Harvor, a Canadian poet, is an observant novelist who takes great care with her details, which are striking, but never distract from the real business of Claire's obsession. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Anxious, insomniac, and adrift in her life, Claire Vornoff drives out into the country to become a patient of Declan Farrell, and an education of sorts begins. An iconoclastic practitioner of alternative medicine, Farrell is magnetic and unsettling, and Claire tries in vain to resist him. As she dreams her way through her life, all the while refusing to listen to her friend Libi's dire pronouncements, her attachment to Declan Farrell deepens, and soon she finds herself caught up in a series of unexpected and startling events.
Set mainly in Ottawa and Toronto, this stunning novel charts the anatomy of obsession, capturing along the way the dilemmas of contemporary urban life. Harvor creates an erotically charged atmosphere, always alert to the pathos of love's ambiguities. Bold, original, astute, and above all deeply human, Excessive Joy Injures the Heart reveals things about us we didn't know we knew. This is truly an outstanding debut.

3 out of 5 stars Excessive Tangents Injure the Reader.......2004-06-12

While I agree that the author has a way with description, the novel seemed to drag on in scenes that had really nothing to do with story. The novel is really a short story extended to 326 pages for the glory of showcasing the author's abilities with prose. Picture an independent movie. This is an independent book. You can appreciate the beauty of the art, but don't expect to be entertained. This book is best read a little at a time, perhaps over coffee during a quiet hour. I read it too fast I think. There is one reason I would recommend this book, however. The author truly has a grasp for how people feel. She addresses things you always think to yourself, but have never quite seen in print, or heard of from your peers. In fact, to me, the book was written entirely as though in Claire's head, as opposed to an external world, even though it's not in first person.

4 out of 5 stars subtle insight into woman's mind.......2004-01-03

Excessive Joy Injures the Heart masterfully weaves a story of subtle insight into the workings of the mind of a thirty-something woman who, though she does manage to carry on with life perfunctorily, feels somehow marginalized. Throughout the novel, one gets the impression that she is teetering on the brink of something absolute, yet inertia or perhaps fate holds her back.

5 out of 5 stars a book that exceeds expectations.......2002-10-20

I read Excessive Joy Injures the Heart after a friend recommended it to me. I suspected I would love the novel because of its striking, poetic title, and I was right. What I loved most about this novel was its language, its gently rhythmic, sometimes fierce and astute, prose. Unlike "plot-driven" novels, whose intrigue fades with the conclusion of the action, this is a book you can read again and again. The language and the characters are real and alive, animated and complex, never false. I was drawn into these people's lives so much that I couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely not my cup of tea!.......2002-08-31

This novel was recommended to our book club in Detroit by somebody's best friend in Buffalo who'd read a rave review of it in the Buffalo News or somwhere. Anyway, it was a disappointment, big time. Well written enough, this is why I'm giving it 4 stars, and sometimes even quite funny, but really (I kid you not) deeply, deeply depressing. The main problem with it is that what with all the bad behaviour going on, the author just never takes a stand. Whatever the charactres want to do, its alright with her. She doesn't comment. She just sets them loose and they misbehave in various highly neurotic ways. After the main character, Claire Vornoff, has an affair with Tony O'Bois, a man she meets at a performance of SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO, then gets worried that she might be pregnant, she goes back to see Declan Farrell, her emotionally twisted acupuncturist again, and although this guy (who used to be a medical doctor, but now he's turned his back on all that) is so competitive with the guy she had the affair with that he offers to give her a vaginal examination so he can assess whether she is pregnant or not. And Claire not only lets him, she's even grateful to him. So he goes upstairs to the main part of the house and gets a latex glove and then comes down and gives her a vaginal examination on the FLOOR OF HIS TREATMENT ROOM. I am not a prude, but this is a very weird scene, and it's only one of many weird scenes. It's also part of this acupuncturist's therapy that in another scene he gets Claire to bite on a shampoo bottle. He also wants her to yell in the primal scream style of California therapists, punch cushions, and suck on the heel of his hand. Meanwhile, Claire is this dreamy woman who becomes so smitten with him that she doesn't even begin to want to try to figure things out, alhtough when she's at work (at the medical clinic of an orthodox doctor) she is really sweet and thoughtful toward the patients. There's one scene where she gives a little boy a pad of paper and a pencil and tells him to write a story. And so he does, a story called WAR AND PEACE, which is about a war between an army of pencils and an army of erasers. This is the kind of scene that Harvor does really well, but there aren't enough scenes like this in the book. Of the 11 people in our book club, only two people were really crazy about this novel, the rest of us didn't have all that much patience with it.

5 out of 5 stars Not everyone's cup of tea, but a work of genius nevertheless.......2002-08-25

Excessive Joy Injures the Heart is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is a work of genius nevertheless, it's so serene and original and powerful. It's even often very funny, and the humour is integrated into the work in the most natural way. I felt so full when I finished this novel, I felt it was perfect. Someone in a review I read somewhere (I think it was a poet) described Excessive Joy Injures the Heart as a book for connoisseurs of both language and psychology, and I agree. I have to warn some potential readers, though, that they might not like it. These might be the readers who are expecting something romantic. But then this is so often the case with brilliant novels, it's their fate to be misunderstood. There's no glib pap in this book, it's the real thing. And although it's a kind of love story (in the most iconoclastic and original way) there's nothing the least bit romantic about it.

    3 out of 5 stars A Lover's Kiss?.......2006-08-09

This is one of the series of collaborations about "One Upon a Time" persuasion by Nora Roberts and three of her writer friends. Previously, they got together on "Once Upon a Castle,' 'Once Upon a Dream,' 'Once Upon a Rose,' and "Once Upon a Star." This is the precursor to the "serial" novel which is becoming popular now. Here we have different stories which revolve around a kiss. In England, a "lady" has visions of "A Man" who will enter her life and change it completely. But, "what would she know about a lover's kiss?" She'd never had a lover (poor thing); in fact, she'd only been kissed twice.

'Kiss Me, Kate' is not from Shakespeare but dedicated to all the women who have turned frogs into princes through a little magic (a kiss), and lots of hard work. A kiss is very special -- a magical thing if given by the right person. We all need love and kisses in this life throughout, not just as young women. Passionate kisses are the best, but the cursory kind can be acceptable as a token of his affection. Some men don't feel comfortable kissing a woman, but that's okay. To be kissed or not is not the end of the world, but it can be a beginning to a wonderful friendship.

1 out of 5 stars Is it over yet?.......2002-11-16

These stories were uninteresting, with unrealistic plots and underdeveloped characters. I have read some of the other books in this Once upon series and they have been mediocre, but these stories were all a complete bore. Save your money.

    4 out of 5 stars Fun anthology.......2002-10-18

"A World Apart" by Nora Roberts. Kadra the Demon Slayer has vowed to destroy the devils that threaten her world. When the demon warriors and their king flee through a portal to a strange orb, Kadra follows. However New York City in the twenty-first century is eerily bizarre so Kadra coaxes private investigator Harper Doyle to help her battle her demons even while love blossoms between them. Nora Roberts provides a strong fantasy romance.

"Impossible" by Jill Gregory. Her family has always sheltered Princess Erinn of Marlbury from the ravages of the hundred-year war. Still their enemy Tynon of Bordmoor kidnaps her. Tynon believes that Erinn is a witch, who has enchanted his land and soon afterward his heart. Jill Gregory paints a wonderful fantasy romance.

"Sealed with a Kiss" by Ruth Ryan Langan. Her father promised powerful Highland chieftain Duncan MacLean his daughter Arianna Douglas in marriage in exchange for protection against invaders. When Duncan's warriors come to escort Arianna, his nephew Lachlan steals her heart. This is an entertaining tale that although the key characters are never developed.

"Kiss Me, Kate" by Marianne Willman. Kate Singleton inherits a manor with a resident enchanted prince. However, her heart belongs to her new neighbor, Michael Bellamy. With a wee bit of help, Kate might save the prince and gain heart's desire too. This is a fun fairy tale that the audience will enjoy yet feel the American, the Englishman, and the frog needed further development perhaps in a novella.

The fifth "Once Upon a ..." is a delightful fantasy romance anthology.

3 out of 5 stars New Agey Romance: Starts off well, but falls flat.......2004-04-24

Aurelia is a pictish princess. (If there is such a thing), when a mystic prophecy causes her to awaken in the future, she falls in love with the owner of her castle even though she believes him to be the man who killed her brother. Baird Beauforte (terribly name), is opening a hotel bed and breakfast, and during renovations stumbles across Aurelia's crypt. When he wakens her with a kiss, she becomes his guest at the castle.

Despite myself, I liked this book, at least the first part. Aurelia was an endearing character despite the phoney new-age mystic fluff added to pad the plot. I particularly enjoyed her 'exploration' of the outside world, and the character of Julian.

Things I didn't like? Aurelia's age isn't mentioned anywhere in the plot. I have difficulty getting into romances if I don't know the basics of the main characters. Also, I liked the character of Marissa. I wished she and Aurelia could have been friends rather than fighting over Baird. Number 1 peeve: Baird! This character had zero personality, and the romance between him and Aurelia was unbelievable. Aurelia was too immature and naive for me to consider the romance with a modern man credible (or satisfying). Finally: Julian. The romance between him and Marissa seemed an afterthought. The author would've given SOME indication these characters were attracted to each other early on.

Started off 4 stars, but ended up being merely an average novel with some good points.

    4 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2001-06-11

I liked this book,it had a mixture of humor ,romance and fantasy. If you are looking for a sleeping beauty, prince charming and ofcourse a villain then this is the book.I truly enjoyed reading it.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad in a fairy tale sort of way.......2000-11-30

Aurelia and Baird's story is a light fairy tale type story, which works, if you like this sort of writing/book. This Sleeping Beauty theme tries to be successful by using the juxtaposition of two people separated by1200 years. Our heroine falls asleep after pricking her thumb and after a 1200 year break (which is later explained), our prince charming finally awakens our princess. Everything revolves around legends, prophecies and reincarnation, so if you do not like these explanations, or feel a book gets stale when everything has been prophesized, you will not find this plot a good one to read.

I liked the fact that Aurelia assumes that she had just awoken from a nap and judges everything that happens around her by her 9th century beliefs. She looks for her father, whom she believes is prisoner of her enemy, Bard (Ms. Cross uses a slight change spelling on our hero and enemy's name) and explains all of the changes she sees by Bard's sorcery. In a society that had many conquerors and blended many different religious beliefs (Norse, Christian, Celtic and "pagan"), weird happenings could have easily been explained by magic, sorcery or witchcraft. She holds everyone in the modern world to the customs of the 800's, and it is interesting to see how she interprets things. Baird now owns the castle (which Aurelia assumes he got as Bard by conquering it, though he bought it in modern times to build a hotel) so when he talks to his interior designer, Aurelia assumes that "king" Baird is lavishing his largesse on his layman. Why else would a woman dress like Marissa and be allowed to spend the kings money so freely? There are many more such "misunderstandings" and I think that most of them are well done. Like others though, my biggest criticism of the book is that it took Aurelia SO long to figure out what happened, especially since she knew the prophecy.

I am not so sure I liked the fact that our key players had selective memories, or some remembered all of the past and others did not. Except for ease of writing the plot, there seemed to be no explanation why our villain would remember his past lives and our hero would not, putting him at a distinct disadvantage. Baird could also have been a stronger character all around. For a savvy, cutthroat businessman, he did not come across that way. Probably not the best book I have ever read, but by far not the worst either.

    1 out of 5 stars Simple.......2000-05-30

I hate to trash a book but I agree with the other readers who found it uninteresting. There's far better books to read.

2 out of 5 stars A good idea, with poor execution.......1999-12-19

I tried to approach this book with an open mind. Page after page, I kept pushing foward...but I finally gave up.

Maybe I'll pick this book up again, when there aren't better books around to read and I've got time to waste.

The idea for the book is good. I like fairy tales and fantasy. However, the fact that Aurelia still believes that she's living in the past by chapter 11 is simply too trying. It's both frusterating and dull when she rushes about to find a father who died (maybe of natural causes) long, long ago.

Perhaps it might be amusing to some, the confusion and the misunderstandings that lead to Aurelia's continued belief that she is in a.d. 800. However, I couldn't stand the fact that every problem she perceives is, well, wrong and an illusion. It would have been so much nicer had she realized that she'd woken up in the 20th century, and dealt with all of the problems and mysteries from that point forward, from that perception and angle...rather than from a delusion.

For instance, she's convinced that the hero, Baird, is actually the invading evil villain Bard...who was attacking her home when the sleeping enchantment encased her.

So she's thinking that her father, the king, has been captured and tortured or killed...and that Baird, who she thinks is Bard, is responsible. Somehow, while a sleeping enchantment is obviously make-believe, the terrible and often silly gordian tangles of logic that Claire indulges to keep Aurelia thinking she's in the past is simply way over the top.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. Maybe I gave up on this book too soon. Maybe I'll pick it up someday and give it another try. In the meantime, I'm going to spend my time on more worthwhile books.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER!!!.......2007-03-27

This is my favorite book of all time -- trust me, that's saying something. I'm somewhat of a romance book junkie, which is very disconcerting considering my young age (17).

This book became an instant number one -- and still stands as number one. I have read it literally 8 times now and even went so far as to buy a collector's edition.

The plot and characters are outstanding, and it is guaranteed to be a book you will never put down once opening -- and reopening and reopening and reopening. It is an enthralling tale and one I strongly recommend -- I would summarize the plot but others have done a wonderful job.

DON'T HESITATE, READ THIS BOOK BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-07-04

This is one of the best romaces ever written and the only one I have kept for years. I have read it four or five times, at least. It has all the ingredients of a classic love story - great hero and heroine, passionate but forbidden love, suspense, tension, loyalty, dilemma, thrilling plot. Most of all, unlike a growing number of novels of this genre, this one is fresh. Romance novels these days are invariably predictable. Entire chapters have to be skipped over to avoid boredom. They are increasingly filled with contrived phrases and political correctness. Conversations between women are often reproduced from other novels, etc. etc. Often, a whole book reads like a collection of parts from previsouly written stories. This one is from the "golden era."

      5 out of 5 stars Another Mid-evil romace winner.......2003-05-31

I rather enjoyed this story of romance, betrayal and brotherly love. It follows the story of 2 twin brothers who were not identical and in those times that was taken as a sign that someone else had fathered one of them. This led to Blaec's basic bad treatment by his father; though he was the first son his father has left the Earldom to his brother Grahaem. The thing is that Blaec and his brother are very close in spite of this all. Which leads to lots of guilty feelings when Dominique comes to be Grahaem's wife, while Blaec is attracted to her and she to him. But, there is also a conniving brother of Dominique's who is rather sick in the head, and other battles to fight to make this story a good one! If you like medieval romances you will enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars fast paced and sexy.......1998-10-08

I loved this book because the characters didn't waste any time before they got busy, if you know what I mean. Blaec was extremely sexy and Dominique was extremely easy for a virgin. See what I mean about "getting busy". The reading was easy and the characters were memorable. I carried the book with me and read whenever possible.

Samantha and Richard meet in a unusual way. On New Years Eve Samantha was running out of church to get her purse when she ran into Richard as he was entering the church. Both of them lost their balance, and fell down the steps. When Richard went to the doctor they told him that he broke his foot. Samantha owns a candy shop, and had a room for rent, and Richard needed a place to stay. Samantha rented her room to Richard and they became good friends. Samantha's biseness was in danger. She knew that there was a new mall going in down the street, but she did not know that Richard was the owner of it. Will Samantha and Richard's friendship be reined by the mall?

2 out of 5 stars Similar to "You've Got Mail" (1998) some spoilers within.......2005-03-31

For a class, I was assigned to read a romance novel and then critique it. Normally, I love reading novels, but this one was excruciating. The characters have no depth. The story line is entirely predictible and cliche. Samantha and Richard are both candy shop owners, and Richard owns the chain store that might put Samantha out of business. Her life is complicated when her dear Granny suffers yet another stroke and then dies. Samantha also comes in contact with her father again, and realizes that he never meant to hurt her, and in fact fought for custody. To top it off, someone tells Samantha who Richard really is, and then she doesn't speak to him for months.

Of course, he goes after her and wins her heart, and the whole town says "aww." While I've included some critical things to the "plot," I'm reluctant to call them spoilers. This book is really bad, and I couldn't read it all the way through because it was too ridiculous. Save your brain cells and choose a book that isn't entirely predictible or cliche, unless you like that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Once Upon A Chocolate Kiss is a wonderful story........2003-11-18

I read this book in one sitting. Ms. Wolverton breathed such life into her characters and settings that I wanted to go to both the stores when I finished the book! Her characterization was so convincing, I could hear the hero and heroine speaking in my mind as I read. Thanks for such a wonderful, feel good story. Great job!

      4 out of 5 stars a delightful, fun read.......2003-10-26

This was the first book I read in the shipment recently received. The cover and title just struck my fancy...

Samantha owns a small local candy store. She loves to make the candies, but, as she is first to point out, she doesn't have a business head. The business was run by her Grandmother (who raised her) until 5 years ago when Grandma had a stroke. Now Sam cares for her grandma and tries to keep the store afloat.

Richard comes to town. His family's international candy company will be opening up a store in, you guessed it, Samantha's town.

This is a delightful book, a fun read. The characters each have their problems. Richard messes up, hides his candy store identity from Sam while his attraction towards her grows. Richard is also on a spiritual journey. He is using this time to get back into a good relationship with God, something he's lost in the past few years of corporate stress. Samantha has her own things to deal with, notably concerning forgiveness. She has to deal with her feeling towards her Dad before she can begin to forgive Richard.

Oh, the ending was fun! How Richard woos Samantha once he sets his mind on it is every woman's dream.

Recommended for a light fun read.

Ashley has done it again! This time she has transported herself and her friend Miranda back in time..and to the land of knights no less! Now both girls must struggle to survive their adventure, both "back in time" and in the future when they accidentally bring back a knight to the present time. Can they really help this old fashioned knight blend in to their modern day high school? If you can get a hold of this book, read on!

5 out of 5 stars Great Teen Series.......2000-03-07

This book was another great book in the swept away series. In this one, Miranda and Ashley travel back in time to the time of King Arthur and his knights. And by some stroke of luck Miranda brings one of the knights back with her to the present time. It is a wonderful time travel book and series for that matter.

I had this book too but I didn't like it. I thought it was cheesy and boring but I respect that other reviewers actually liked this book as after all everyone is entitled to their own opinions but for me personally from now on I'm going to to be be a lot more selective about the short story romance anthologies I buy! This one was a waste of my money and my time! I personally feel that it's books like this that give romance books a bad rap!

            5 out of 5 stars My Opinion..........2003-09-22

I liked it!!! And you might too if you just give it a chance. It's not your average regency romance, I admit it. There's no logic to these stories and not everything in them can be explained...it's supposed to be magic. If you are looking for a regency romance, there are lots of good ones out there...try one of them, but, if you are looking for a collection of romantic fairytales set in regency England, you've found it!

            1 out of 5 stars Hokey!.......2002-02-12

I don't always mind a romance book that has some kind of a theme going but this is just too darn silly! I picked this up by mistake in a used book store while getting a bunch of romance book companions, the type that have short love stories by several different authors and I simply just didn't like it! I have a relative who's always saying don't judge books by their covers and don't judge stories by their titles but in this one you sure can! They are just so hokey and quite ludicrous! These authors can and have done better! Sorry but I just prefer a themed romance book companion that doesn't insult my intelligence!

            1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-06-22

I read it and immediately gave it away.
