¡°El H¨²sar is my first novel. Written in 1983 between two war articles, at that time I had no intentions to dedicate myself to writing literature, and published almost by chance by a publishing company with which I never maintained a good relationship, it has taken me almost twenty years to recover the publication rights. Now this novel surfaces again, finally to the author¡¯s liking, with a suitable revision, corrected of errors and lightened of some unnecessary adverbs and adjectives.¡± ¨DArturo P¨¦rez-Reverte.

Fantastic Early Effort.......2006-09-16
The story of "El Husar" is certainly not Perez-Reverte's best, but the promise of "El Maestro de Esgrima" and "Captain Alatriste" is clearly there. It's a great stab @ a difficult susbject-- the Napoleonic occupation of Spain written by a native Spaniard. From the perspective of a German (from Alscace) in Napoleon's army.
He's a great author; though the book is only available in it's original Spanish, it's certainly worth it. I read it w/ a Spanish/English dictionary beside me throughout!
Book Description
Long-time Chicago Tribune columnist John Husar dedicated his life to the outdoors, his and columns and actions directly contributed to the opening of thousands of acres of park land across the midwest; for the first time ever his best columns and stories are collected for outdoor lovers to enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
read it - you won't regret it.......2004-05-31
John Husar's writings don't only apply to fishermen, hunters, or any denomination of people, but to anyone who loves to experience travels, adventures, or living in general, because he wrote not just about the outdoors, but how extraordinary life is. This book is a must-have for anyone who likes good stories told by an exellent storyteller. And who knows, you might learn somthing. Read it, you won't regret it
This book is inspiring!!.......2004-05-19
Reading this book filled me with inspiration to get out and enjoy the outdoors. John Husar's writing is absolutely poetic. He was an artist who painted with humble words. It's an easy read -you can pick up any page and start from there, because it's a collection of his columns. Thank you for making this book!
After reading a few columns, I took my kids out for a walk in the woods for the first time this year. This book is not just for the fisherman/hunter, it's for anyone who loves the outdoors and appreciates natural beauty. It's timeless and classic. I even gave it to a few friends for Father's Day.
A must have book.......2004-05-14
The writings of John have been missed in the Chicago Tribune. Thank you for the wonderful book ! I look forward to the next book with more stories.
He has taken me on advertures around the world with such respect for nature and the environment.
Great stuff!.......2004-05-11
Mr. Husar was an avid hunter and fisherman but this book should appeal to anybody who loves the great outdoors. He didn't write about how to catch big fish but about how to have fun while doing it.
I really like that it's a collection of newspaper columns -- you can grab it and read one or two columns at a time, depending on how much free time you have, or read it straight through.
I'll keep this one on my shelf for a long time.
John Husar - A Voice In The Wilderness.......2004-05-05
What a wonderful book.....Mr. Husar has a way of capturing the essence of the outdoor experiece in a artfully brilliant and often humerous way......showing great respect for all God's creatures.

Book Description
It’s April, spring is in the air, and Callie and Tom have just spent a wonderful few weeks getting to know each another after years of a telephone–only relationship. But as their time together draws to a close, they are called to the hospital bed of mutual friend Eli Gold, who has just been shot.
Eli asks Callie to find out who is responsible for the shooting and begs Tom to help her. The search leads Tom and Callie to the beautiful island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. There they face a sinister enemy among the ruins of an old sugar plantation—an enemy who’s willing to do anything to keep his identity secret and the past deeply buried.
Customer Reviews:
Strong Fourth Entry in a Great Series.......2005-10-14
Tom and Callie finally get to spend some time getting to know each other in person. Almost alone at a retreat in North Carolina, one week has stretched into three, but the real world is calling again and they must reluctantly part ways.
Just as they reach the airport, Callie gets a phone call from Stella Gold. Her husband Eli has just been shot by a sniper and is in surgery. Before loosing consciousness, he specifically asked for the two of them to come. Since Eli is such a good friend, they drop everything and rush to his bed side.
A PI, Callie wants to figure out what happened to Eli. The only clue is a warning from someone named Nadine. When Eli and Stella's condo is searched, it is further proof that someone is after him. Where might he have hidden his notes? And why did Eli request Tom's presence?
As this series has progressed, the plots have only gotten strong, and this book is no exception. It starts with a bang and keeps right on going. Every time an answer comes, it only leaves more questions. Yet Callie and Tom keep digging, getting themselves further and further in trouble. While some things seemed obvious a little early on, there are still several nice twists along the way that keep the reader guessing.
Fans of the series will be happy to learn that Tom is a very active part of this book instead of only a presence like in previous entries. In fact, we even get to learn what he does, finally. His relationship with Callie continues to grow as she continues to move on from her husband's death. In fact, one of the strong points of the series is watching Callie finally truly deal with her grief.
The writing style is still a little rough, keeping the reader a little more at bay by telling instead of showing. It's not a big problem, however, and I found myself staying up too late reading every night to see what would happen in the next chapter.
The only problem with this book is the cliffhanger ending. Even though I saw it coming (I've read the back of the next book already), it still left me wanting to pick up the next book right away. Which isn't really a bad thing at all.
With a strong plot and great characters, this Christian mystery series is wonderful entertainment.
A page turner.......2005-01-25
The first book in the Million Dollar Mysteries that you get to see Callie and Tom work so closely together. Clark drives the story along amongst breathtaking scenery, and mounting action. She kept me turing the pages and I finished the story in a short time. The Christianity part wasn't overbearing. I enjoyed being able to see a bit more of Tom, and can't wait to read what the next book will tell of him and Callie.
The only flaw with the series is that the story is "told" to you. I feel as if I don't get to feel and see as Callie actually does, that she is holding me slightly at bay. For a story written in FP POV, I'd like to have more of my senses involved. But it still is a good read.
Buckle Your Seat Belts.......2004-02-12
Charity investigator Callie Webber finally seems to be having some joy in her life. Although heartbroken by the death of her beloved husband in a boating accident, she has just started to explore a relationship with Tom Bennett, Callie's boss and the philanthropist behind the J.O.S.H.U.A. Foundation. As they are ending their vacation together in the North Carolina mountains they receive a devastating call; Eli Gold, Tom's friend and Callie's mentor, has just been shot and his last words before sliding into unconsciousness were to ask for the couple's help.
After rushing to Eli's bedside they discover that he had been tracking down a woman he had thought was dead but is apparently very much alive. Callie also learns that Eli has been hiding his own secret past, namely his history with the National Security Agency and his ties with the mysterious woman. As Tom and Callie follow the trail to the Caribbean island of St. John they find themselves involved in a complicated scheme involving art fraud, secret identities, and double-crosses. Complicating matters is that just as Callie allows herself to believe that it's possible to find two loves in a lifetime she must confront Tom's own past and whether she has enough trust left in her to believe in him.
Although labeled an inspirational Christian mystery, Quarter for a Kiss easily crosses into the mainstream thriller genre with its fascinating plot and fast pace. The action speeds up as Tom and Callie use his rock climbing skills to stage an elaborate break-in into an extensively guarded home and coordinate their investigation with federal agents. One of the most entertaining scenes is the detailed description of Callie's attempt to place bugs within the home of their suspect by using actual bug traps. Additionally, Clark so vividly paints a picture of St. John that the reader feels the breezes and sees the clear ocean. The author successfully creates great characters that are conflicted and very real, from Jodi, Eli's immature adult daughter, to Sergeant Abraham Ruhl, the St. John's police officer who is unwilling to give up his investigation to Interpol or the NAS. Of course, Clark's greatest achievement comes with Callie and Tom, who are both very engaging and slowly building a stronger relationship together. Callie's wit, investigative skills, perseverance, and faith will ensure the success of this fourth entry in the winning Million Dollar Mystery series.
Compelling and entertaining.......2004-01-30
The latest in the Million Dollar Mysteries series is, as always with this author's work, better than the last (and that was pretty good to begin with). Her characters are deepening, she has a gift for plot and structure, and she leaves you wishing she could write the next book fast enough to read as soon as you're done with this one. As Callie and her new beau (and still boss) Tom investigate the shooting of an old, dear friend, the stakes are higher than usual, the emotions are more intense and the story is propelled forward more forcefully. The secrets are many, the solutions make sense and the reader is left wanting more. Can you ask for more than that?
fantastic Million Dollar Mystery.......2004-01-29
In the North Carolina Mountains, Callie and Tom spend three weeks together becoming acquainted in person with one another after only meeting over the telephone due to work. Tom is the philanthropist behind the J.O.S.H.U.A. Project while Callie investigates non-profit groups for grant suitability. Tom introduces Callie to his favorite hobby, mountain climbing while Callie does likewise with canoeing. Both feel something special connects them.
As their time together draws to a close, Stella Gold calls to tell them that her spouse, Eli the man who brought Callie and Tom together has been shot. They rush to Cape Canaveral to visit Eli in the hospital. The ailing Eli asks Callie and Tom to find out who shot him. The duo would refuse nothing if Eli asked so they begin investigating and soon find themselves in danger in the Virgin Islands from someone who wants certain truths to remain hidden.
The fourth Million Dollar Mystery' is a fantastic story that moves the series forward on a personal level as well as providing the audience with a delightful who-done-it. The relationship between Tom and Callie evolves beautifully as each finds they are falling in love with the other, but has baggage holding them back. The amateur sleuth inquiries is cleverly handled because of Callie, who though she is not a detective, her work makes her something more than an amateur. Mindy Starns Clark keeps the suspense going from the moment the dynamic pair reach Florida until the final confrontation in St. Johns and the romance blossoming from the first wall climb to the closing discussion making the upcoming half dollar tale something to look forward to reading.

Book Description
Her captivating stories and vibrant characters have earned New York Times bestselling author Mary Jo Putney enthusiastic praise from reviewers and readers alike. Now, from the majestic mansions of eighteenth-century London to the mist-shrouded wilds of the Scottish Highlands, she brings you her most breathtaking romantic adventure yet.
Laird of an ancient, powerful Scottish clan, Duncan Macrae is committed to ending the ceaseless strife between Scotland and England. But he also has other, secret powers—those of a Guardian, humans with mystical abilities to control nature’s forces and see into the hearts of others. And from the moment he encounters the young and independent English widow Gwyneth Owens, his fiery spirit is irrevocably drawn to claim her as his own—a passion that will not only set his loyalty to his land against his sworn Guardian vows, but will also threaten everything he cherishes most.
Though Gwynne’s father was a Guardian, she believes that she has inherited only her mother’s beauty, not her father’s power. Then one kiss from the dangerously alluring Laird of the Macraes ignites a hunger that shakes her to her soul—and reveals visions of a looming catastrophe that threatens England and Scotland both. Only by becoming Duncan’s wife, and ultimately betraying the man she loves, can she avert disaster.
As destiny and two mighty nations clash, Gwynne and Duncan must push their powers and passions beyond the most forbidden limits if they are to save their love—and secure the future.
With Mary Jo Putney’s consummate skill and dazzling historical detail, A Kiss of Fate brings an unforgettable period to life—and will forever enthrall your senses with memorable characters and sweeping emotions.

Customer Reviews:
Very hot, but............2007-02-22
Concentrated so much on the war aspect of the novel that it took away from the volatile love story and amazing characterization between Gwyn and Duncan.
If Putney delved more into the love story and concentrated on the characters' conflicts among their feelings, and significantly gave us less information about the politics, I would have rated this novel 5 stars.
The main A+ in this novel for me was the hot, steaming, intense, OH MY GOD, loves scenes-which were numerous and truly unbelievable.
First of all this is a supernatural romance where the heroine strives to obtain some type of power of her own but settles for being a scholar of magic instead, due to her lack of talents. She marries very young and becomes a widower within the first chapter. Duncan-the Scotsman hero who possesses great power of weather shifting-instantly falls for Gwyn when he sees her at a gathering in London and tries to win her hand in marriage.
The main conflict of the novel is the Jacobite uprising in Scotland. Duncan of course sympathizes with his clansmen yet has some reservations due to his sworn oath among the council to never directly influence the natural course of history. All the members of the magic family, which are called the Guardians, can aid human conflict to whomever they choose to side with but are forbidden to directly change it, hence the constant fear among the council that Duncan may become a more active role in the Jacobite rebellion against the English throne. Gwyn sides with the members of the council and underhandedly tries to influence Duncan's viewpoints, hence the constant tension that comes between them.
Like I said before this was a very good read and I would recommend it just for you to experience the incredible connection between Gwyn and Duncan. Unfortuntely, the barrage of historical facts that became more and more detailed as the story went on, truly put a damper on the romance and the novel as a whole.
Otherwise, this was one of those rare intense love stories I absolutley adore to read.
Decent, but too much war.......2006-08-05
I liked the premise of this series, but hope the rest of the books are more upbeat (especially since I already bought them). This one dwelled so strongly on the Jacobite uprising, and how it tore apart families and friends that I was depressed by it. Then, to my surprise, the author's note talked about how she tried to keep the war out of the story, because it was a romance. Believe me, there is a lot of "war" here. Call me shallow, but I don't want every other page of a romance novel to be filled with the conflicting "causes" of the characters, and the attendant misery. Ugh. But if you factor that out, the magic elements were, well... magic!
This isn't one of Putney's best efforts.......2006-06-16
I have enjoyed Mary Jo Putney books in the past but I just couldn't get into this book. I read part of it and put it aside while I read 3 or 4 other books. Then I came back to it and read a little bit more and it hit me that I was just trying to finish it so I could start reading something else that I could enjoy. At that point, I knew this was a book I would end up taking to Goodwill.
Early in the book we are told that Gwynne will betray Duncan and throughout the book we are constantly reminded of that fact. I started thinking, "Enough with the betrayal already! If she's gonna do it, just go ahead and do it!!!!" By the time the "betrayal" finally comes it is terribly anticlimactic and you find yourself asking, "Is that it? That's all there is to it?" I was just very disappointed!
Oh, and by the way, I have read all the other reviews and it seems everyone either LOVES this book or HATES it. Makes me wonder...did we all read the same book?
A MUST READ!.......2006-06-14
This book is incredible! You can't help but become enchanted with the characters and the incredible descriptions of the land. The characters are so charismatic and grow and mature within the story. Mary Jo Putney keeps you enthralled from the first page to the last. It is a fantastic story and highly recommended.
Excellent historical fantasy romance.......2006-05-06
Set in England and Scotland, this is another story in the Guardian series. Guardians are mages who do what's best, without unnecessary interference, for the largest number of people. Different Guardians have different powers.
Gwyneth Owens' father was a Guardian but her mother was a mundane. Gwynne was raised as a Guardian even though she had no powers. It's 1745 when she meets Duncan Macrae, Scottish laird and the Guardian called Lord of Storms. She is terrified by his strength and power. He knows she's the woman for him but she refuses him.
Then the Guardian Council asks her to marry Duncan and keep an eye on him and possibly influence him when the time comes. The Council doesn't support the Jacobite cause and they know Duncan, being a loyal Scot, could use his powers to affect the outcome of the rising, causing the Council to declare him a renegade.
Gwynne isn't certain she can influence Duncan at all but marries him and, after losing her virginity on her wedding night, comes into her own power - she's an Enchantress.
Wonderful, fast-moving love story. The magic made sense and the choices had consequences.

Setting: England 1537
Sensuality: 7
Beautiful, brilliant, and sophisticated, Lady Guinevere Mallory is only 28 but has buried four wealthy husbands. When seasoned soldier Hugh of Beaucaire contests her ownership of a parcel of land, he brings Guinevere's rich estates to the attention of financially needy King Henry VIII, setting in motion events that threaten her status and her life. Traveling to her estate on the King's orders to investigate her fourth husband's death, Hugh expects to find a woman who has earned the label "The Black Widow." Instead, he discovers a lady whose elegance, quick wit, and warmth threaten to make him her next willing victim.
Despite the danger that Hugh poses to her family and holdings, Guinevere finds herself drawn to the handsome soldier but knows she dare not give in to the attraction nor can she allow herself to trust him. In the end, perhaps only Hugh has the power to save her from Henry and Thomas Cromwell's scheme to claim her wealth and destroy her family. Cromwell is not a man who gives up easily, and family members may die if Hugh doesn't learn to trust in Guinevere in time to save them.
Jane Feather has a fine hand for detail in colorful 1530's costuming and the minutiae of life in Henry VIII's England. That vivid scene setting combined with the political scheming and terror instilled by Thomas Cromwell, the equal balance of strength, intelligence, and wariness in hero and heroine, and the warm charm of secondary characters all add up to an excellent historical novel well worth reading.--Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
Dear Reader,
When I first saw her, I realized that the miniature portrait I had shown to the king did not do her justice. Lady Guinevere Mallory’s beauty transcended even a portrait painter’s skill. It was nearly impossible to believe that this woman, who had buried four husbands before her thirtieth birthday, could have used murder and the dark arts of witchcraft to achieve her great wealth.
I carried the king’s writ to investigate Lady Guinevere’s oft-repeated widowhood. Was it mere coincidence that each death had left her wealthier than the last? The fact that I believed she also held lands that rightfully belonged to my family made my investigations all the more personal and all the more thorough.
Surely, I thought, such a woman would bear some obvious mark of treachery on her countenance, in her manner. But when we met I saw only the beauty of her pale blond hair and her deep violet eyes that seemed to me to offer a glimpse into the intriguing world of her brilliant mind and spirit. I began to wonder how the gentle hands of such an elegant woman, whose cool composure belied her dubious past, could have committed cold-blooded murder.
Now as I learn more about the mysterious widow, I find myself growing more curious about the secrets of her heart–and more determined to reveal those secrets. Guinevere is the most captivating and intriguing woman I have ever met. I have but one question:
Will my interest in her prove to be a fatal one?
Hugh of Beaucaire

Just what I need..........2006-05-05
to read another book about a woman so beautful men marry her over and over and over again. Please, ladies, unite with me here. Where DO we average women go? Before you contemplate drowning yourself, a reminder - these people didn't exist. The only gripping part of it was the tangle created when the woman is in the position of losing everything over rumors of her questionable loyalty to the King. That at least was believable. The rest - not really all that exciting.
Horrible!.......2006-04-10
I am at a loss as to why so many people like this book. I for one do not find romance in someone potentially facing execution and don't understand how you "magically" are attracted to someone who can bring your downfall and take your for everything you own. I really disliked this book, I found none of the romance that I loved in her books like "Vice" and "Velvet".
Loved it!!.......2005-09-29
Let me start off by saying that I love historical romances; however, I have never been interested in history ... until I read this book. This is the first book that has ever inspired me to read up about history. I was compelled to learn more about Privy Seal, Henry VIII, and Anne Boleyn, I was that fascinated.
I loved everything about this book. It made me feel each and every one of Guenivere's feelings, from anger, to fear, to downright outrage, and then love. Wow, what a ride. I truly loved Guenivere's daughter, Pippa. She was the most refreshing child I have ever read about.
I could not give this book enought stars.
Revenge of the historical himbo!.......2004-09-23
I am shocked to see so many good reviews of this book. Although I liked the heroine enough (most of the time) I absolutely hated the "hero" if you can call him that!
The story starts off with the "hero" petitioning the corrupt government to take money and land away from the "widow of a cousin on his uncles late wifes side" or some such connection. I was immediately reminded of the types of creeps who try to contest a will on loose connections. Worse this guy died a couple of years ago already, so you would have thought the "hero" would have moved on by now!
Nope, he convinces the crown that she may be a murderer or a witch or whatever else it may take to divest her of her money and property she has legally inherited. Promptly he heads off to her estates where he interrupts her daughters birthday party, and drags them all to London for possible execution because... well.. maybe he thinks she has it coming anyway... and he needs to ensure *his* son a future.
Now he is not totally heartless, since he likes her daughters... he will petition the king for custody of them after she is executed and even give them a proper dowry. With guys like him who needed rodents I wonder!
Well it all works out for the best it seems... (his best that is). Fortunately for all she can't resist the stirrings of lust she feels whenever she is near to the smelly brute even though he is dragging her off for her possible execution. Though frankly he seemed not even remotely interesting to me!
As she is intelligent, gloriously beautiful, and filthy rich he hastily proposes at her trial, and she has no choice but to accept his terms or be executed (leaving him her daughters and her fortune either way).... so she does. Such Chivakry! He ends up rich, and she ends up ... well alive, no longer financially independent, and married to a smelly opportunistic himbo! sigh....
Don't read this book unless you are on a male bashing frenzy. However, if you just broke up and you need something to remind you that they really are pigs, and have been throughout history, it will make an excellent read!
Unputdownable.......2003-07-06
The Widow's Kiss is a great leap from Ms Feather's previous V books. I'm amazed at how skillfully she has switch genres. The depth of characters of Hugh and Guinevere are complex and utterly believable. They are both flawed, human if you will, not all beauty and male good likes...you almost feel you know them as one of your friends when you have finished, which I did, finished the book that is, which was far too soon...every chance I had over a 3 day period, missing sleep, food and gym classes just to read the twists and turns of the plots of Henry VIII and Cromwell's machinations and how they longed to get their hands on the widows property and Hugh and his lady's fight to love and stay alive. The secondary characters are delightful, well rounded, the children are adorable, they too play important roles. I'm not going to go into to too much detail about the book itself, others have done that in their reviews, my main point is the book is by far the best read I've had in 2 years, and I've always got a book on me, buy it if you want excitement, romance, intrigue, danger, love, flawed but loveable characters. Above all read it because its just plain "unputdownable". PS Be prepared to be sleep deprived as well as lose a few pounds once you start you cannot put down!

Book Description
Sheer force of will kept Cally Taylor faithful to her late husband's dream -- running his dilapidated farm and drilling for oil with an ancient rig. That same determination stopped her from evicting Mike Donovan, the ruggedly handsome wildcat driller who'd manipulated his way onto her land and into her home. Then, suddenly, guilt and misunderstanding shatter their tentative trust.
