As a girl idling her way through long, toxically boring summer afternoons in Leechfield, Texas, Mary Karr dreamed up an unusual career for herself, "to write one-half poetry and one-half autobiography." She has since done both, and even when she's recounting a dirty joke, she can't help but employ a poet's precise and musical vision. Her first memoir, The Liar's Club, was as searing a chronicle of family life as can be imagined--tough, funny, and crackling with sorrow and wit. Against all odds, its sequel doesn't disappoint. Cherry finds the teenage Mary still marooned in a family whose behavior ranges from charmingly eccentric to dangerously crazy. (This, for instance, is the Karr version of a note from home: "Lecia Karr's leprosy kicked in, and I had to wrap her limbs in balm and hyssop. Please excuse her.") But here the focus has shifted to Mary herself, furiously engaged in pissing off authority at every turn: flouting the dress code, dropping acid, running from the cops, falling in love.

First love, you may say, heart sinking in chest: what more can possibly be said about such a subject? Actually, a great deal. To read Cherry is to realize how rare it is to find a teenage girl portrayed on her own terms. As a chronicle of female adolescence with all its longings, fantasies, cruelties, and fears, Karr's memoir goes darker and deeper than any book in which the protagonist doesn't end up dead. She turns a savage eye on her own hypocrisies and failings, and we like her all the more for them. We even end up fond of Leechfield, easily the toughest, smelliest, nastiest little burg ever to appear between the covers of a book--"a town too ugly not to love," her father called it in The Liar's Club. Growing up in such a place is necessarily about getting the hell out, but it's also about inventing a new identity with which to make your escape. That's the blessing Karr's wise friend Meredith bestows after a particularly harrowing (and harrowingly funny) acid trip: "I see big adventures for Mary. Big adventures, long roads, great oceans: same self." Cherry is the story of how Karr begins to acquire that self, however fumblingly--a big adventure for Mary, as it is for all of us, and one we never finish as long as we live. Perhaps that's the book's greatest pleasure of all: it hints there's more to come. --Mary Park

Book Description

From Mary Karr, author of the bestselling The Liars' Club: the vibrant--often hilarious--story of her tumultuous teens and sexual coming-of-age

Mary Karr told the prizewinning tale of her hardscrabble Texas childhood with enough literary verve to spark a renaissance in memoir. The Liars' Club rode the top of The New York Times bestseller list for more than a year, and publications ranging from The New Yorker to People magazine picked it as one of the best books of the year. But it left people wondering: How'd that scrappy kid make it outa there? Cherry dares to tell that story. Karr picks up the trail and dashes off into her teen years with customary sass, only to run up against the paralyzing self-doubt of a girl in bloom.

In this long-awaited sequel, we see Karr ultimately trying to run from the thrills and terrors of her sexual awakening by butting up against authority in all its forms. She lands all too often in the principal's office and--in one instance--a jail cell. Looking for a lover or heart's companion who'll make her feel whole, she hooks up with an outrageous band of surfers and heads, wanna-be yogis and bona fide geniuses.

Karr's edgy, brilliant prose careens between hilarity and tragedy, and Cherry takes readers to a place never truly explored--deep inside a girl's stormy, ardent adolescence. Parts will leave you gasping with laughter. But its soaring close proves that from even the smokiest beginnings a solid self can form, one capable of facing down all manner of monsters.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-27

I bought this book because I loved her first one "The Liars' Club" so much. To be honest, had I started with "Cherry" I probably would not have been interested enough to read anything else by her. But by the end of "The Liars' Club" you feel as if she's a close friend so you want to read "Cherry" to find out what happens in her life after that. She's also a poet, but I'm not a fan of poetry so I can't tell how if her poetry books are any good. I highly, highly recommend "The Liars' Club" and then "Cherry".

5 out of 5 stars I hate poetry.......2006-09-13

...yet I halfway want to buy Mary Karr's entire body of work out of sheer gratitude for her having written this, and Liar's Club.

While I agree that it's no sequel (did anyone imply it should have been?), the narrator was still herself, just as honest and affecting as ever. In fact, while each stands alone, Cherry refers to Liar's Club just enough to make you feel even closer to the story. Like, when John Cleary was riding his bike behind the pesticide truck, I was like, "Oh, I remember this! I wonder who's going to pass out?"

The Sex Club chapter! I would have read a hundred pages of the phone book if I thought something like that was waiting at the end. Then, just when I thought it couldn't get any better, her dad came out and started talking to the cat.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional, Coming-Of-Age Memoir.......2006-08-14

Mary Karr relives her teenage years in a small, working class town in Texas. The book is wonderful as Karr hits all the right notes while focusing on familiar, universal adolescent experiences--first loves, strained relationships with parents, friends growing apart, etc. Cherry is filled with great little truths, and Karr has a great voice.

I think this book would appeal to people who liked Tom Perrotta's Bad Haircut or the Rob Reiner movie Stand by Me.

5 out of 5 stars Elegiac bittersweet poetry.......2006-06-23

Mary Karr's Cherry is a fantastic remembrance of an adolescence which her parents had very little influence over during the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s in the Port Arthur, Gulf region of Texas. This is the follow-up to her much lauded memoir The Liars' Club which chronicled her younger childhood and the family relationships which made The Liars Club so acclaimed for its frank take on youthful sexual experimentation. Cherry focuses more on the full range of experiences during her childhood rather than her sexual development or personal or development, or any particular aspect of her adolescence.

Karr is a fantastic writer, let it first be said. The detail which she recounts, perhaps from diaries chronicling these events, 25 to 30 years previously, but probably to some degree from her own memory, is astounding. She has the ability to plunge to the emotional core of things and elide the parts of that experience which might best allow her to connect with her readership. Karr captures, with bittersweet memories, the wistfulness and feelings that loom so large as youngsters and shape us as adults. She has a rare sensitivity but also, owing to her voracious literary appetite, the vocabulary to express her feelings with an ease most writers can not dream of.

Karr took many drugs during this time and spent much of her free time, during her sophomore and junior years (1972-1974), apparently, in an altered state. That being said, she was, it seems a very good student and also, shockingly for her milieu, rejected the opportunity to serve on the drill team. Her recitation of these memories and acknowledgment of her drug usage make only serve to ground her memoir in realism, as many have indeed used drugs, although perhaps not to the extent Karr did. Karr's honest accounting does not particularly glamorize drug usage. She is not depicted as particularly happy while she is taking drugs, and indeed her usage is not a broader developmental choice. She took drugs, it seems in part, because of her parents' absence in her life and her largely unfettered freedom. In addition, her mention of numerous friends who died too young or ended up in jail betrays regret and unhappiness about her naivety and the absence of positive role models. However, it is to Karr's credit that she does not shy away from drug use and acknowledges it, recognizing the attraction that it posed, while not endorsing its use at any time.

Overall, Karr recounts her experiences honestly and openly. What distinguishes Karr, as mentioned, is her articulateness and sensitivity to the shared feelings she might have with readers. She has many interesting experiences and never fails to link herself to the shared experiences she might have with others.

Book Description

When Tekla was thirteen, her mother committed suicide four years after her father died. Tekla's twenty-three-year-old sister, Alyce, a working mother and abused spouse, became her guardian. This memoir presents their journey from a tragedy-filled life in a bleak railroad town to one of victory over impossible odds. The two sisters encounter not only the death of their parents and domestic violence, but other fearsome and timeless demons: a fight for their lives, attempted murder, rape, abuse, kidnapping, and poverty. They also experience the kindness of strangers, delight in the humorous moments of everyday life, and discover the strength borne of the love between two sisters. Together they struggle to understand and ultimately define their roles as women and prevail against terrible odds. This often sad chronicle celebrates their triumphs and ultimately leaves us with the knowledge that we can shape our own destiny and accomplish our goals despite adversities.

5 out of 5 stars Warm Your Heart, Stiffen Your Spine.......2002-12-18

Look no further than A Bowl of Cherries if you want to read a compelling story about victory over some of the toughest circumstances imaginable. More happened in Tekla Miller's young life than one would think possible outside of a Hollywood scriptwriter's imagination: her father's injury in a train wreck and his subsequent death, discovery of her mother's suicide, abuse by her brother-in-law, rape, extreme poverty, flight, fire and third-degree burns, deprivation. These difficulties might have made Tekla Miller bitter and hard. Instead, with the help of her equally remarkable sister Alyce, Tekla learned how to use her personal tragedies like refining fire, and emerged strong, certainly defiant, immensely capable, happy, and with a great sense of humor intact.

In recounting her story, Ms. Miller leavens the dramatic saga of her teen years with funny moments (check out driving lessons, Tekla-style, and you'll never want your own child behind the wheel of a car!), always showing herself to be quick-witted and up to the task of coping with whatever challenges come her way. Her sister, too, showed great ingenuity in creating a life for Tekla and her own children that approximated normal, while getting her own college degree and ensuring Tekla did as well--all during an era when women were facing great odds against independence. This memoir celebrates the extraordinary love between two sisters and the great triumph possible in even the most difficult life. This is truly a book to add courage and heart to every reader.

        Product Description

The Russian Revolution marked a series of events in imperial Russia that culminated in 1917 with the abolition of the czarist monarchy and the establishment of the Soviet communist state under Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin. While Lenin and his followers purportedly advocated the rise of the Russian peasantry, opposition to the Bolshevik Party erupted into a bloody civil war and was met with Lenin’s ravaging “Red Terror” campaign. The revolution effected a severe change in all economic, political and social relationships in Russian society—a change that would endure until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. This historical memoir imparts distinctive social and cultural insights into the realities of the Russian Revolution and the later effect of World War II on the people who suffered under the Soviet Union. Narrated in sequential first person by a mother, Nadia Stakhanova, and her two daughters, Natasha and Vera Stakhanova, the book gives the factual account of a family whose privileged way of life was shattered by Communism and war. Ranging in setting from czarist Russia to present-day Melbourne and the campus of Vassar in New York, the story follows the family through a period of perpetual poverty and crisis, beginning with the sentencing of father Vladimir to death for loyalty to the White Russian faction. It continues with the family’s subsequent evasion of the Russian secret police, the German occupation of their home city during World War II, their forced abandonment of five-year-old daughter Natasha, and their flight to the West through Russia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Italy and Austria. The reunification of the family in Australia marks the story’s climax.

This true-adventure story is based on five years of the author's and her sister's childhood. Veronica, a seven-year-old worry wart, and Suzanne, her ten-year-old rambunctious sister, are cast upon kin, then into boarding school in wild and soul-stirring lands. They are set on this stormy course by their newly-widowed father, after he marries a woman who does not want to raise the young girls. When the father's and stepmother's castaway plan fails, a series of harsh and sometimes comical confrontations ensue between the children and parents. Away in West Africa, these girls who are without allies have to contend with a gaslight routine of abuse. They cope by using their childish resourcefulness as a means of defense.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring story of triumph over child abuse.......1999-03-09

A true story that reads like fiction, "By Hook or by Crook" tells a compelling, inspiring story of two children who survived the trauma of child abuse. I particularly liked the upbeat quality of the book which shows how the author and her sister triumped over the terrible conditions of their childhood. The book kept me in constant suspense, as the children went from one unhappy situation to another.

2 out of 5 stars Long dragged out bore.......2007-06-08

At first this book really grabbed my attention. I was looking forward to reading it and Grif was, and is still, a great character.

Sadly, this book dragged on far too long for me. Highlander in Disguise is 374 pages. I gave up reading around page 300 when Grif and Anna were still NOT together. Over 300 pages of nothing isn't worth another 74. I can take a guess at what happens anyway. They finally get together. Finally. It is not even worth finishing if it is only 74 pages after a 300 page wait. Even if it's page 301 where they finally get together- too late. Don't care. They get together, kiss, blah blah blah. Not worth it anymore. I don't even care if they got the 'bloody beastie' or not.

I also felt as if Grif deserved a heroine more mature and less shelfish than Anna. She got on my nerves quite a bit.

If you like a book to ruin your expectations and make you go from wonderment to disappointment, then be my guest and read this one.

4 out of 5 stars Very sensual romance with witty dialogue and some laughs.......2007-01-08

I must admit that I really enjoyed this book, primarily because of the Grif character and his interplay with Anna.

My favorite part of the book was where Grif warns Anna about wearing low cut gowns and says it will prompt a gentleman to have his way with her. He's too clever. When she dismisses that idea, he tells her that some men are very good at giving a woman pleasure without ruining her good name. He also tells her that she will beg him for more. Under the guise of giving her a "lesson" he then proceeds to have his way with her and pleasures her (keeping his trousers buttoned up of course).

There are true fireworks between these two from the start. The relationship grows from intense dislike and irritation, to grudging acceptance to love during Anna's pygmalion-like transformation under Grif's tutelage. Having obtained the beastie she knows Grif seeks, Anna blackmails Grif into tutoring her how to seduce another man whom she wants to marry. Grif finds he has done his job too well, however, as Drake, who had previously ignored Anna, now declares his love. Anna is disappointed in Drake's kiss, which leaves her cold in contrast to Grif's buring hot kisses which melt her.

Anna does eventually beg Grif for "more" all while telling him that she intends to marry Drake if he asks her. Although he hasn't declared his feelings for her, Grif is hurt and incensed, accuses her of using him, and tells her he will not pleasure her like a whore while she marries another man.

                3 out of 5 stars Missing Chemistry.......2006-10-10

This was my first London book and it was a good read. I thought the H/H worked fairly well together. I liked the seduction part - her coming to him for lessons in exchange for the beastie to save his family. But overall there chemistry was lacking. This could have been much better than it was. I felt like I never really got to know the characters. I never felt draw into the story. The whole book felt like it was leading up to something and then there was nothing. This book was not a page turner or a keeper for me but overall it was ok.

I found Griff's and Anna's characters to be a little on the bland side. There seemed to be no spark to either one. And the longing for each other 3/4 of the way through the book I felt was not expressed enough for me to care. I wished London would have delved deeper into her characters to make them more interesting. But overall it was decent.

                3 out of 5 stars A Sweet Read!.......2006-01-31

Julia London's "Highland in Disguise" was a sweet read but it got off to a rather slow start. The premise for the story had a lot of potential but in the end it was rather predictable in it's outcome.

Grif Lockhart is off to London to retrieve the family beastie from the English Lockhart's. His brother Liam had tried but failed with this quest...well, not failed entirely he did find a loving woman and wee daughter to love. So armed with borrowed funds and a tale to rival that of any storyteller, Grif sets out to find the family heirloom. But, he ends up getting much more then he bargained for. He is about to make a deal with one Anna Addison. His job has just gotten a lot more interesting.

Anna is the middle child and although she finds the Ton boring at times and she does have a tendency to not watch what she says...still, she would like to find a man who she could love. So when handsome Grif Lockhart arrives in London it is not long before she realizes he's keeping a secret. She will keep his secret and help him find his beastie but he has to teach her how to seduce a man to care for her. It's not long before Grif is seduced and wants Anna for his own. Will he take a chance or will the real treasure slip away from him?

This was a sweet read. Grif and his family are a perfect dash of color and entertainment to an otherwise standard historical. Grif was a fun protagonist and truly one of the saving graces of this story. Ms. London has created a fun series with the Lockhart Family and I look forward to reading the next installment.

3 out of 5 stars True love is best found when one is not looking.......2006-01-25

The Scottish Lockhart's desperately need the money they will get from the sale of their families solid gold beastie. The only problem is, Liam didn't manage to get the beastie home when he went to London to steal it back from their English cousins. So now Griffin will head to London to find the woman who they think has the beastie, and bring it home.

The catch: He can't go as a Lockhart because the English cousins would probably throw him into Newgate for having stolen it in the first place. The plan: Assume a title that is no longer in use, infiltrate the English society and get the beastie back. The problem: One English wallflower who fancy's herself in love with an English Lockhart figures out the truth and finds the beastie first!

Julia London has written a fun Regency romance. Anna has had several seasons and is on the verge of getting put "on the shelf" which she belatedly decides she doesn't want. She has always admired Drake Lockhart (the English cousin of Griff) and thought he admired her as well, until her younger sister Lucy becomes the bell of the season, and Anna hears that Drake will offer for Lucy.

While I enjoyed the story, it seemed a little long. Julia London strikes me as wordy in her writing, and therefore I wasn't sucked into the story as much as I thought I should. Up until Anna blackmails Griffin things seemed to drag for me. Anna was almost annoying - she kind of struck me as a busy body. Grif was doing the best he could to find the beastie, but he was going about it all wrong. So there is humor.

For me the story really picked up after Anna blackmails Grif and tells him that she wants to learn how to seduce a man. Here, I also I found myself starting to like Anna as a heroine. I think it's mostly because the two were starting to care for each other, but Grif ironed out the side that didn't accentuate her femininity. Which was pretty funny actually!

This was a fun read, and I'm really looking forward to finding out what happens to Mared (Griffen and Liams sister) who was used as collateral for the beastie and is evidentially cursed!

"The Lockhart brothers' quest for an ancient family heirloom has proved fruitless...and an unpaid loan has left them indebted to their rival, Payton Douglas. With no recourse, the Lockharts offer Payton their most valuable commodity: their sister Mared's hand in marriage. Raised to despise the Douglas name, Mared outwardly agrees to the marital bargain for the sake of her family; secretly, she concocts a plan to ensure Payton will not wish to marry her. Seeing the handsome, virile laird Payton face-to-face, however, threatens a centuries-long enmity -- and awakens Mared's deepest desires. But she will not be swayed. Choosing to repay her family's debt by working as his housekeeper instead of wedding him, she finds herself inexorably drawn to the man she vowed to resist. Then a profound discovery changes everything....Now, no longer bound by a promise to her family, Mared must let her heart decide if the laird Payton is the enemy of past legend -- or if he holds the key to a future filled with a passion beyond her wildest dreams. "

5 out of 5 stars It Hits the Spot.......2007-07-15

I've been itching for a good read for a while and randomly borrowed this book. It was absolutely wonderful. Some might find Mared dense and ungrateful but she is also strong and stubborn which are characteristics I can relate with. However the hero is patient and persistent and their love story has been an interesting journey throughout the entire book.

                5 out of 5 stars It's a keeper!.......2007-03-09

I REALLY enjoyed this book, it's one of the best I've read (even if it is a romance novel).
I like the way the author had it as part of a series, and the characters were so well written that I felt as if a I knew them.

I originally borrowed the book for work, then I enjoyed it so much, I orderd it and the first & second ones as well. This one remains my favourite.

It's good some "spicy" parts, yet there is a good story line to it as well.
And of course, a happy ending, which never hurts!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good as the 1st 2 Books in the Series.......2007-01-10

I enjoyed reading this book to ''finish up'' the 3 book series. But, it is not as well written as the 1st two books. The characters are not as well developed. They don't feel ''real'' and the plot seems long. A little way into the book, I skipped ahead to read the last third and have it done with. Nevertheless, if you have read the first 2 books, about Mared's brothers, then this book is probably worth reading if only to find out what happens to the characters from the 1st two books and to see if they ever retrieve the ''beastie.'' This is really not the author's best work, but it is still better than a lot of historical romance novels on the market today.

Julie London is a truly gifted writer and "Highlander in Love" is just another of her lovely books. It actually has a great story plot, interesting characters, sexy scenes, and she has a sense of humor that can make you laugh out loud. I will read all of her books. They are great.

                    Product Description

From Publishers WeeklySprightly and fresh, London's second Scottish Regency (after Highlander Unbound) stars another member of the Lockhart clan engaged in the family's ongoing quest to steal back an ancient solid gold "beastie" to repair their bare-as-bone finances. Grif Lockhart, pretending to be an earl, sets off for London to find the treasure. Since he's more socially skilled in ballrooms and drawing rooms than his older brother (who failed to regain the beastie but returned with a wife in the previous volume), Grif's an instant hit among all the young ladiesexcept intelligent Anna Addison, who quickly uncovers Grif's false identity, his reason for being in London and the beastie's location. Holding the treasure hostage, Anne demands Grif's help in teaching her to make another man fall in love with her. But such dangerous lessons in flirtation lead both Grif and Anna to wonder whether their growing intimacy is merely schoolwork or the blooming of genuine emotion. Quick with humor and unafraid to send its characters tumbling headlong down the wrong path, this romance should please readers thirsting for a droll, light read. As a boon for those new to the series, this tale nicely stands alone, even as it cleverly whets the appetite for the unlucky-in-treasure but lucky-in-love Lockharts' next adventure.
