5 out of 5 stars Another Chinua Masterpiece.......2006-04-21

"Arrow of God" is another excellent novel by the world renowned Chinua Achebe. I have read this novel perhaps five times, having first read it decades ago. I still get thrilled and marvel at the ability of Chinua Achebe to tell a good story that keeps the reader wanting to read more. I have also read "Things Fall Apart" and "Man of the People", which are all excellent reading for those interested in African literature.

The story is set in a traditional Igbo village in Western Nigeria where the author traces how the age old traditions that had stood the test of time were systematically eroded by colonial rule. An important lesson we learn is that we need to change with the times and be adaptive to the constant changes, otherwise we perish.

This is a well written book by a remarkable author that is very interesting to read as well as enlightening.

3 out of 5 stars Falls just short of greatness.......2004-05-07

After reading the great "Things Fall Apart" by Achebe, I had high expectations of this book. I came away befuddled. I guess we were supposed to learn that a man cannot overcome his village, but still..I didn't get how it could have ended like that.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Achebe Novel.......2004-03-28

I know that many people have read Things Fall Apart, but that is not his greatest novel. I was not forced to read any of his books. I was just curious. It exposed me to some of the greatest literature I could ever have known. Arrow of God is by far my favorite Achebe book. So if you think Things Fall Apart is good, Arrow of God is so much deeper. You get to know the characters so much better. You feel like you are part of the scene. It is more personal. You see more into different people's lives. I read a lot of books. This one is one of my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars IRRESISTIBLE! READ THIS BOOK, AND KNOW THAT IT'S CUTE.......2003-01-29

The entertaining prowess of Professor Achebe makes me wonder how he gets his inspiration.
This well-written, well-edited "Arrow of God" is by every means fantastic. It is a masterpiece whose only functional gear is forward. The novel is so interesting that you will never put it down once you've started reading it.
Having read most of Professor Achebe's works, I acknowledge that his Nobel Prize (in literature) is long overdue.

5 out of 5 stars Achebe's Arrow.......2001-07-01

Like Chinua Achebe's first novel (Things Fall Apart), Arrow of God takes us back to the traditional village culture of the Igbo nation in Western Nigeria, tracing its destruction under British colonial rule. Once again, too, the story centers on a tribal elder who embodies the old ways so profoundly that he will be destroyed along with them. Achebe uses fiction to do what ethnology can never accomplish: to take us "inside" an indigenous culture, letting us see and feel how its customs and beliefs support the rhythms of daily living. With an extraordinary blend of sympathy and detachment, he captures the human tragedy in the destruction of a way of life.

Book Description

The three-thousand-year-old epic Ramayana chronicles Lord Rama's physical voyage from one end of the Indian subcontinent to the other and his spiritual voyage from Man to God. In Arrow of the Blue-Skinned God, anthropologist and journalist Jonah Blank gives a new perspective to this Hindu classic -- retelling the ancient tale while following the course of Rama's journey through present-day India and Sri Lanka. Ultimately, Blank's journey -- like that of Lord Rama -- evolves into a quest: to understand the chimerical essence of India itself, in all its overwhelming beauty and paradox. "Quite possibly the most perceptive book that I have come across on India since the British Raj ended." -- Pranay Gupte, The Washington Post; "What Hollywood attempted on the big screen with casts of thousands in Gandhi and A Passage to India, Jonah Blank has achieved in 350 stylistically rich pages." -- Los Angeles Times; "This informative and entertaining book is something to be thankful for." -- The New York Times Book Review

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book on India.......2005-08-23

This book is a riveting read.
It touches upon a myriad of social, economic, political, emotional and ultimately human themes from the Ramayan epic and juxtapositions them with the present day Indian psyche.
The substance is informative and interesting without falling into the trap of being academic or verbose.
The author's style is succinct, witty and appropriately poignant.
Being a non-resident Indian, I was pleased to read such a well written and objective analysis of such a behemoth of a country.
This is a very vast, tricky and interconnected subject matter to tackle.
Jonah Blank does it with aplomb.
I would recommend that anyone wanting to know about India read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful.......2005-06-05

I love India and have been there many times but this book taught me a lot I don't know. The book has an original format which was risky but works. You really get both caught up in the story and then feel like you've visiting the countries he's talking about.

As travel writing, it doesn't get better than this. So refreshing to not be talked down to and he avoids the horrible snobbishness often encountered in the gendre.

I just wanted to savor each page. It's not a book you flip through. I was sorry when I finished it. I just wish I could give it six stars.

4 out of 5 stars A view of India through the eyes of a young fresh face.......2004-09-17

I guess this book has been out for some time, but I had not known about it until I stumbled upon it at the bookstore and I am very glad I did. The book is written in a style that is unlike other travel books I have seen or read about India in that it reflects on one of the treasured literary epics in Hindu/Indian culture and mythology--the Ramayana. Each chapter focuses on a single aspect that is explained through the characters in the Ramayana, (caste, kings, swamis, fate...etc..), and each chapter begins with a summarized "Jonah Blank" version of the epic of Rama, Sita, and Hanuman. What I have enjoyed so much about this book is that the point of view that Blank brings is that of a twentysomething who is seeing India from the eyes of a young person who at times is both humorous and skeptical, yet idealistic and hopeful. You can truly tell that Blank, although a young person at the time of the writing, truly has passion and depth of vision about the complexities of India and you yourself get caught up in the majesty and the mysticism of India through his journy and the journey of Rama and Sita.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on India - past and present.......2004-06-17

This is a wonderful book about the travel experiences of a young Harvard scholar in South Asia and how they evoked or resonated with certain episodes of the Ramayana. In one way or another the Ramayana has had an immense influence on South Asian civilization (as well on that of S.E. Asia) so it was interesting to see how Blank brought together, and exposed as timeless, so many of the epic's themes. This is a excellent introduction to India. Highly recommended.

A unique travel book that traces the steps of the man-god Rama across India, and gives us a vivid portrait of India today.
Superb combination travel book & mythic retelling. Though we'd read it years ago, images from the book followed us on our recent trip to India that retraced many of the paths of the story. Whether as a pre-trip study, or just arm-chair pleasure, get this book!

Born on a Frisian farm, Titus Brandsma (1881-1942) entered the novitiate of the Carmelites in Boxmeer. On his journey he cultivated the spiritual garden of his cell in order to dwell in the face of his Creator. Becoming a scholar of philosophy and mysticism, Titus Brandsma was concentrated on the depths of human existence, but his contemplation gave him a broad view of reality and made him discover ever new horizons. Although a university professor, he was a productive journalist, engaged in questions of culture and education. Prophet of peace and justice, Brandsma defended from the beginning the Jews against Nazi ideology. During the German occupation of Holland he took a strong stand in favor of the freedom of the press. For him the dignity of the human person could never be sacrified for ideological and political reasons. As a result he became a martyr in the concentration camp in Dachau.

2 out of 5 stars I had a real hard time with this one..........2007-03-10

Maybe it's just me but doesn't the main character lack any heroic qualities whatsoever. I never fell for this guy. He was weak and kinda sick in the head. This weird fixation (Bianca) on the image of his past weird fixation (brother's wife) really seemed on the verge of insanity. The only one who I was endeared to was Nicole. She stayed strong and in most cases wore the pants in this book.

I truly felt sorry for the spoiled, Bianca. Nobody deserves to be treated so nasty but most especially it should not be made out to be a good thing to call people some pretty aweful names. In the beginning of the book she was just a spoiled, pampered brat but after being ridiculed and verbally abused. Even the children were allowed to treat her badly.

I just didn't care much for this book. I can honestly say it was not a bad read but I felt I was disagreeing with the author the entire time.

4 out of 5 stars Intense but well worth a read.......2006-07-17

Nicole Courtalain is the daughter of a French aristocrat who is forced to flee France to escape the French Revolution. She is all alone. Her family, as far as she knows, has all been killed. An English gentleman and his daughter, Bianca, take in Nicole to serve as Bianca's maid. Bianca is a spoiled, self-centered girl who is engaged to an American, Clayton Armstrong. Despite Clay's pleas for Bianca to travel to America so they can be married, Bianca offers excuse after excuse to delay her travel plans. He finally hires men to kidnap her but the kidnapping plans go awry. Instead of Bianca, Nicole is taken. She is put on a ship sailing for America and also forced to marry Clay by proxy. Once Clay discovers the mistake, he, of course, initiates plans to have the marriage annulled. There are some twists to the plot that will delay the annulment plans, but by that time, Nicole is more than willing to put the marriage behind her and forget about Clay.

This was such an excruciating book to get through. Clay and Nicole go through such a difficult time that I was hard-pressed to rush through the book and get to the end. Bianca is a memorable villain. She is clever, manipulative and conniving and there is no end to the lengths she will go to in order to keep Clay and Nicole apart. The story is beautifully woven but I didn't like the ending. Because of the intensity of the story, I would've preferred a gradual winding down to the end. Instead, the ending was abrupt, a lot like watching a movie at the height of its climactic intensity and then suddenly the electricity goes out.

3 out of 5 stars Great setting, wonderful descriptions, frustrating storyline and hero though..........2006-05-08

I have mixed feelings about Counterfeit Lady -- the first installment in the James River trilogy. On one hand, this novel is very emotionally moving with lots of twists and turns coupled with beautiful descriptions of late eighteenth century Virginia. On the other hand, the hero got on my nerves and Jude Deveraux throws political correctness out the window big time here. But more on that later. The year is 1794. Plantation owner Clayton Armstrong is madly in love with an English young woman called Bianca Maleson. Tired of her excuses for not marrying him, he hires men to kidnap her and arranges a marriage by proxy during the long voyage to America. Imagine his surprise when instead of getting plump, blue-eyed blond Bianca he gets a petite, beautiful and exotic Frenchwoman named Nicole Courtalain. Clayton is outraged when he learns that she was forced to marry him during the voyage and he agrees with Nicole to have the marriage annulled as soon as possible. It appears that his men kidnapped the wrong woman. A refugee from her homeland during the French Revolution and daughter of aristocrats, Nicole was Bianca's personal maid before she was kidnapped and brought to America. Her attraction and feelings for Clayton grow deep in a matter of days and she hopes that he will soon see her as more than just a second choice. But Clayton's feelings for Bianca run deep, for she reminds him of an old unrequited love. However, he may be in for a very rude awakening. There are many twists throughout the novel.

As said earlier, I have mixed feelings about this first installment of the series. The story is riveting and moved me to the core. I felt Nicole's sorrow of having endured the pain of losing her family during the Revolution and then trying to pick up the pieces in England. I also felt her pain when her love for Clayton wasn't reciprocated. Clayton irritated me big time. As other reviewers had stated, he was too stupid to live at times. How could he "love" a spiteful, hateful creature like Bianca? He makes Nicole miserable whenever she witnesses his blind, undying devotion to Bianca. I wanted to strangle him at times. He reminded me of Gavin Montgomery from The Velvet Promise, for he also fancied himself in love with another woman. I know that is the whole point of the novel and that this is the central plot and intrigue, but I must say that it is my least favorite. Anyway, one thing I loved about this novel was the backdrop of late eighteenth century south. I pictured the beautiful plantations, the clean air, the high-waist dresses and parasols, and all of the other wonderful descriptions Deveraux provided for us. This is a beautiful time period and I look forward to reading more novels set during this period. One thing I found unnecessary and no doubt offensive to many readers was the emphasis on Bianca's weight. For a while I thought, "Okay, she's fat, I get it. Now let's move on." I thought Bianca was a horrible, spoiled, self-centered, unredeemable villainess and I hated her. Her hefty figure was the least of my problems with her. I appreciate any author's attempt at realism (because making fun of a fat person, regardless of his or her personality, is an unfortunate common thing), and Deveraux does have a wonderful sense of humor, but not when it's gratuitous, and I thought it was definitely gratuitous here, not to mention excessive. And so, I give Counterfeit Lady three stars. I both loved and hated this novel as I read it. Novels that move me while reading it is definitely a good thing, but I nevertheless cannot overlook the faults in this effort enough to give it a higher star rating.

                  3 out of 5 stars Okay read.......2006-02-10

I read this book years ago. It had a great plot but it got a bit silly in parts. Read it if you don't have anything better on hand. It was okay.

                  5 out of 5 stars Happy.......2005-04-14

I read this book more than a decade ago, and most of the plot has faded from my memory. The only plot detail I really recall is that the last third of the book isn't as well done as the first two thirds of the book.

What I found unique and precious in "Counterfeit Lady" is that the main couple are happy together. For the middle third to half of the book, the couple are happily married and enjoy each other's company -- no arguments, no strife, no misunderstandings or secrets, no one out to kill them, just happy. After all of those other Romance novels filled with misunderstandings & strife, this pleasant atmosphere is refreshing and quite enjoyable. "Counterfeit Lady" conveys that joyful feeling of being in love.

With that said, the objections raised by other reviewers are valid. I simply liked it anyway.

Things actually seem to be looking up for that chronically tormented Elizabethan theater company known as Westfield's Men. As the curtain rises on Edward Marston's exuberant The Counterfeit Crank, the cast has welcomed into their midst an oddly secretive but nonetheless talented new playwright, who brings with him a rousing historical drama, Caesar's Fall. Meanwhile, Alexander Marwood, the gloomy, henpecked landlord of the Queen's Head, that London inn where Westfield's Men are begrudgingly permitted to perform, has gone to visit his ailing brother (whom he hopes will remember him in his will), leaving the hostelry in the care of a more appreciative and exuberant manager. "Fortune has smiled on us at last," exults Westfield's veteran dramatist, Edmund Hoode.

Ah, but those words have hardly been uttered before a plague of gambling debts spreads among the actors--the result of their engagement with beguiling card sharp Philomen Lavery--and Hoode's health declines precipitously, dashing any chance of his completing a promised lithesome comedy. Adding insult to injury, the troupe's costumes are pilfered and its ticket proceeds pinched. Though Nicholas Bracewell, Westfield's book holder and necessarily practiced troubleshooter, hopes to rout all these woes, he's over-stretched, having also volunteered to aid a fetching, naïve young con artist who has survived abduction by the lecherous operators of a workhouse for the poor, but whose Welsh boyfriend has now gone missing. Deceived by people he saw as friends, and pursued by some of the very malefactors he aims to vanquish, Bracewell must marshal his considerable skills--both as a detective and a thespian--to save his livelihood, not to mention his own life.

British fictionist Marston has created other historical series in recent years, including those about a pair of 11th-century "Domesday" researchers (introduced in The Wolves of Savernake) and about 1850s London Inspector Robert Colbeck (who debuted in The Railway Detective). Yet he owes his popularity most to the Bracewell books, of which The Counterfeit Crank is the 14th (after 2003's The Vagabond Clown). While this novel offers a couple plot twists that are obvious from the outset, and more than one secondary character lacks the nuances essential to believability, there's no sign that Marston's regular cadre of 16th-century entertainers--each more egotistical or eccentric than the last--has been wrung dry of the possibilities for humor and hardship. --J. Book Description

Nicholas Bracewell, the book holder for the London theater troupe Westfield's Men, has a few problems on his hands. The troupe's playwright is ill, a gambler is making short work of many of the actors' salaries, and their costumes have gone missing. When Nicholas meets a pair of troubled con artists, steering them clear of murder is almost more than he can handle. But he's got a good heart and an inquisitive mind. After all, the show must go on in Edward Marston's delightful fan-favorite, Edgar-nominated series.

5 out of 5 stars Book Number 14 in this Terrific Series.......2006-12-02

Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.

Nicholas Bracewell, the stage manager for the troupe of actors known as Westfield's Men has yet more problems to overcome. The group's talented playwright Edmund Hoode, has been taken ill and is unable to complete his latest offering. The problem is, is the illness a natural one or are there more sinister things afoot. Plus a gambler has moved into the inn the troupe calls home and is proceeding to relieve some of the actors of their hard earned money. Then, as if these problems are not enough the troupe's theatre costumes go missing from a locked cabinet. Nicholas could well do without all these distractions but of course, as usual, the show must go on.

The author's love for the Elizabethan theatre comes shining through this series of books. Plus his knowledge of the period fills the pages with authenticity and the sights and sounds of the streets and inns of Elizabethan London.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2006-11-11

This was an enjoyable read, but wasn't my favorite in the series. It still features the same wonderful characters, but the dialogue between them seemed forced and formulaic -- a little tired. The plot has an interesting twist involving playwright Hoode, but the other story line was pretty lame. Part of a great series, this book had all the basic elements of the earlier stories, but the telling seemed a bit dispassionate -- like an actor who has played the same role one too many times.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, a wonderful read.......2004-12-28

I'm a latecomer to the series and after reading "The Counterfeit Crank," I will definitely order more of Edward Marston's books. The characters are wonderfully drawn, and the details are excellent. The mystery may not present much of a challenge to the experienced fan, but I think it's more than worthwhile.

We were snowed in over Christmas, and I read this book at the same time as I read Stephen Greenblatt's biography of Shakespeare, "Will in the World." Mr. Marston's portrayal of his theatrical company is exactly the way it was when Shakespeare was an actor and budding playwright. I highly recommend both books!

In Elizabethan England the acting troupe of Westfield's Men is having their share of woes. Playwright Edmund Hoode has taken ill and it is up to his protégée Michael Grammaticus to finish the new play the actors are to perform. Michael is so grateful to his mentor for his support that he pays for the doctor and the special food he prescribes. A card player Alexander Marwood entices some of Westfield's Men into a game of cards with him. More times than not he is the winner, but there is no evidence that he is cheating but bookholder Nicholas Bracewell has his suspicions.

Someone steal the take for a play and their best costumes; nobody has a clue who is behind the thefts. Two young beggars who Nicholas befriended end up at Bridewell's workhouse where Dorothea is raped before she is released and her best friend Hywell is killed for his righteous attempt to hunt down the people who run the workhouse. Nicholas is determined to bring those responsible for the boy's death to justice as well as a couple of thieves who thought Westfield's Men were easy pickings.

Readers get a taste what it was like for actors who have the backing of a lord in Elizabethan England. Nicholas Bracewell is more heroic than usual as he tries to right many wrongs by bringing thieves and killers to justice. THE COUNTERFEIT CRANK is an exciting historical mystery and readers will be delighted to become reacquainted with characters they have come to regard as friends as it is always a treat to read about the endearing Westfield's Men.

I really like this book! It's really exciting! I read this book and I liked it so much I had my Mom read it aloud to me!!!! While learning about history, this book is filled with mystery and suspense. You can learn a little bit about England in 1569 and about how coins were made back then, too. I loved this book so much I can't wait to read the others in the series!

This book is really good. Lady Grace once again finds herself in a web of lies, treachery, and even MURDER! But with the help of Masou, Ellie, and a few new charecters, Lady Grace can solve this case, who knows she might even enjoy the Ice Fair.

Written in a personal journal format, this is a first-person narrative that takes the reader on a haunting ride back into the realm of British royalty in the sixteenth century. This is the fourth book in the Lady Grace Mystery Series. However, this is a book that stands well on its own without fear of being lost in a labyrinth of intricate relationships formed in previous books. This is a more advanced historical fiction novel with a hearty helping of mystery and intrigue that will largely appeal to girls in the sixth to ninth grades. One downside to this book is the somewhat lengthy and wordy dialogue. There is also a slight possibility that some children may become turned off on the idea of reading about individuals who they have very little in common with. Overall, however this is a fine introductory book into the complicated and sometimes treacherous world of English aristocracy. The story is unique, and unfolds at a good pace, and most significantly the characters are memorable: delightfully comic and full of personality. Perhaps the main downside is that the book ends so soon. This is a perfect book to serve as an accompaniment to a classroom exploration and discussion on British royalty.

There is also an interesting section at the conclusion of this book which discusses at length the historical background of the Tower of London. This is a nice touch as it provides historically accurate information that is relevant to the story and provides a context of reality in a book of fiction.

4th in the series, it is written by one of Queen Elizabeth's Maids of Honor - Lady Grace Cavendish - in the form of her journal. Grace is young for a Maid (14), but her mother died in service to the Queen, so the Queen has taken her under her wing. But Grace also keeps an eye out for the Queen - and in this storyline Grace discovers some forged coinage that of the new coin that the Queen is having minted. The Queen gives her leave for 5 days to discover how the dead man found on the frozen river Thames had the forged coins. Grace takes her task seriously, but not without the help of her friends Masou and Ellie. I look forward to these creative mysteries - even if they are geared towards young adults.

In this book, coinage or coin forgery in Elizabeth reign is the thema. As one of a coin collector, I am very interested in scene of the Tower Mint. Although this series are for YA, adult such as am I sixty years old are easily submerged in the story.
Historical details are well investigated. Fair held on frozen Themes and people are descrived as if the auther saw them.
