Book Description
Jules Mendelson is wealthy. Astronomically so. He and his wife lead the kind of charity-giving, art-filled, high-society life for which each has been carefully groomed. Until Jules falls in love with Flo March, a beautiful actress/waitress. What Flo discovers about the superrich is not a pretty sight. And in the end, she wants no more than what she was promised. But when Flo begins to share the true story of her life among the Mendelsons, not everyone is in a listening mood. And some cold shoulders have very sharp edges. . . .

A Real Page-Turner.......2007-02-20
Could NOT put this book down. But the ending! Not as I expected or hoped. Left me feeling empty....but I guess that is what happens in the real world.
just can't put it down........2006-09-24
this is my favorite fiction written by dunne.
i started reading it in the afternoon, can't put it down until the next morning for i can't hardly open my eyes anymore.
finished it after a short nap.
it is about bloomingdale and vicki morgan, no doubt about it.
sad story.
Intriguing & Engrossing ..........2006-07-12
It says this is a novel ~~ but reading the others' reviews, they say it's loosely based on a real story ~~ and to be honest, I really don't care if it's loosely based on anything because I didn't pick this book up to read up on the rich and famous. I picked this book up because I was bored and it needed to go back to a friend of mine. And I was not able to put the book down. Fortunately, it has been raining nonstop the last two days, so I was able to read it all.
This is my first Dominick Dunne book and it really surprised me on how good it was. It was very well-written and very engrossing. It is steamy but it could have been worse. It shows a little bit of the world that the Mendelsens live in as well as the writer, Philip, lived in and the lifestyle of the rich & famous in LA and how they chose not to intermingle with Hollywood celebrities.
This book focuses on Flo March, a young woman who was Jules Mendelsen's mistress. It showed the exchanges between those two, his wife, Pauline, his lawyer, and their circle of upper-crust society. It begins with a lavish party that the young writer, Philip, was invited to. After the party, Pauline's best friend, Hector, was found murdered. Jules hushed it up and that aroused Philip's suspicions on why it was covered-up, letting the real murderer go. And it all spirals downhill from then on for the Mendelsens, and Flo, who was caught up in the middle of it.
It was well-written, intriguing and definitely engrossing. I couldn't stop turning the pages in order to find out who did what. The lavish descriptions of the houses, jewelry and the lifestyles, were interesting as well. I will have to admit to being a little bit dumbfounded though at the thought of why the rich and famous always need to have more than what they have. It seems like they're cursed.
It was definitely a perfect rainy day reading material ~~ and surprisingly so.

Best Book Ever!.......2005-07-02
First, I have to say that "HeyJudy" is wrong. The character of Flo March is based entirely on the real life mistress of Alfred Bloomingdale, Vicki Morgan. This was one of the first novels I read by Mr. Dunne(the other being The Two Mrs. Grenvilles), and ever since I have been totally obsessed with finding out more of what really happened. If you are like me, I suggest that you pick up Beautiful Bad Girl: The Vicki Morgan Story, by Gordon Basichis, who incidentally is the writer that Vicki was involved with up to her death. He was actually a suspect in her murded. Also, Dominick Dunne tells us all about that in Fatal Charms/The Mansions of Limbo. Pick it up, you will never be bored!
Very, Very Bad Writing.......2004-06-23
I could barely get through the book due to the very irritating and smug writing style. The overuse of phrases such as "I heard with my own ears" and "I saw with my own eyes" made me want to barf. Once you've read anything by Dominick Dunne (including articles in Vanity Fair with all of his very knowledgeable "unnamed sources")you know his writing style and the questionable validity of its content. This is of course non-fiction but so over the top and full of self-importance that if it had been written by an unknown author it would never have been accepted for publication. Garbage.

Customer Reviews:
Really want to give this 5 stars!.......2007-08-31
This book is SO pretty and is FULL of cute projects. I cannot give it 5 stars, though I want to. Why? There are a few projects, trench coat, bathrobe, etc where you don't learn how to make the project, you learn how to embellish it. Trench coat and bathrobe are in the materials list! Also, the photos (though gorgeous) sometimes show only a fraction of the finished piece. And there aren't always finished dimensions for the projects. There is a definate learning curve.
That's all I can complain about... It is otherwise lovely. I am off to sew a cute wool beret!
Very Nice!.......2007-07-23
I adore making things for my home myself, and this book has many projects I have done, albeit in my own way. What I also enjoy about this is the clear explanations of how-to. I also enjoy pictures in rooms that are not so perfect, but the charm of "un-perfection" is appealing! I believe novice and experienced alike will enjoy this book
Cute.......2007-07-16
I enjoyed the patterns in this book. Contrary to an earlier review, their are patterns in the appendix, however they require an enlargement with the assistance of a computer/scanner/etc. I enjoy the variety of crafts. They are organized in to sections. Some include: romance (chamise, bed covers, bath robes, slippers), household (apron, refurbished umbrella, hammock), bedroom (drapes, ottmans). To be honest, I haven't sewn anything yet, I just enjoy reading craft books. But it seems straight forward. They also have conversions in cm and inches for those of you who care. I recommend this book.
Charming, but.................2007-06-15
This is a charming book and its great if you want simple projects but I wasn't impressed by much of the book. There were some cute projects but overall, I think this book trails Lotta Jansdotter, Amy Butler and even Denyse Schmidt wrt usefulness. The photography for the book had lots of style but seriously, think twice before buying this book.
beautiful, useful and inspiring..........2007-05-24
I absolutely adore this book. The projects are lovely and useful. All of her descriptions are easy and done in full. I especially enjoy the different ways to hem. Excellent projects for family gifts or things to make you and your home more beautiful. I look forward to more books from this author.

A Fresh Voice In Romantic Suspense!.......2006-12-05
Janine Coulter has been given the big break she has been wanting by proving herself managing the prestigious exhibit at the Palace of Versailles in France. Things are not going well as the locals seem to be put out with the American bossing them around and then there is the security specialist Luc Tremont. She can't make a move without the Frenchman getting in her way. He is everything she can't stand. Too smooth, too bossy, and too controlling. He is also handsome for words and speaks to her as a woman. But the suspicious nature of his behavior keeps her guard up. Just who is Luc Tremont and what is his secret.
This story was amazingly fast-paced with plenty of imagery to help place the reader right in France along with Luck and Janine. Their romance and attraction is smoldering and when combined with the fresh and unique spin Ms. St. Claire puts on this story the reader will feel as if they've stepped into a 1950's jewel heist movie. I loved the atmosphere the author has created. It's a perfect drop back for the race to the finish romance. Secondary characters add depth to this entertaining read. This is the first time I've ever read Ms. St. Claire and it won't be the last. This is a writer who knows how to capture the readers attention.
Breathtaking action and romance abound.......2006-10-11
Historian and museum curator Janine is working at Versailles to present a collection of pottery from Louis XV's mistress featuring vases with her likeness, but French security agent Luc Tremont tries her patience when he takes a little too much interest in the vases. He tries to encourage her to display reproduction vases instead of the real ones to keep them from being stolen from notorious jewel thief "the Scorpion." Luc is actually Nick Jarrett, formerly known throughout Europe as the Scorpion, and has spent the last five years working for the FBI to avoid prosecution. This last assignment will ensure his freedom and give him a sense of redemption.
When the "Pompadour Plums" (as the vases are nicknamed) and the reproductions both disappear at the opening gala, Luc and Janine travel across the continent in pursuit of the hot pottery, attracting danger at every turn.
In a plot reminiscent of Hitchcock's classic film "To Catch a Thief," St. Claire's intriguing novel blends breathtaking European locales, fast-paced action and plenty of romance and sizzle to tell a rollicking and adventurous story. St. Claire has quickly become a must-read author.
It takes a thief for this absolutely grand adventure.......2005-09-08
Once there was a beautiful woman who symbolized the height of French art and politics in the 18th century. She was La Marquise de Pompadour, patron of the arts and mistress of King Louis XV. The recent discovery of three unusually colored Sèvres vases bearing her image has made headlines around the world and brought Dr. Janine Coulter to Versailles. Taking over as curator of the Pompadour Plums exhibit, Janine is determined to finish the lifelong dream of her mentor Albert Farrow, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. But in the days leading up to the exhibit's premiere, rumors abound that an infamous art thief known as The Scorpion is planning to steal the Plums, and Janine is forced to work closely with security expert Luc Tremont to stop the heist.
If all went as planned for "Luc Tremont," he would soon be getting a pardon and his old identity back. Once known as one of the most successful thieves of the modern era, Luc Tremont aka Nick Jarrett aka The Scorpion has spent the last five years atoning for his crimes by working undercover for the FBI throughout Europe. When his old nemesis Karim Benazir escapes from prison and assumes the Scorpion persona, Luc arranges to use the Pompadour Plums as the ultimate bait. Switching the Plums with a fake set, the trap should have been perfect. Unfortunately, when the theft is discovered, the real vases are also missing. Now, Luc and Janine -- the one person who can tell the difference between the fake and real sets -- must track and find the Plums before they disappear forever. And with them, Luc's last chance at redemption.
FRENCH TWIST is an absolutely grand adventure. The charming and chameleon-like Nick and the intrepid Janine are an attractive pair whose sizzling chemistry will have readers thinking of those romantic art/jewel heist movies of the 50's and 60's. Interesting and varied secondary characters provide depth and layers to the story, and in Ms. St. Claire's narrative, France has never been portrayed so vividly and lovingly. With her flair for romance and suspense in exotic locales, Roxanne St. Claire is well on her way to the bestseller lists.

Fast-paced, thrilling ride.......2005-02-22
FRENCH TWIST had me from the start, all the way through to the satisfying conclusion with good, strong, sympathetic characters, a interwoven and detailed plot and a setting that jumped off the page -- 3D -- for me. The writing was strong and interesting and kept me turning the pages and reading "just one more chapter" before going to sleep. St. Claire has fast become one of my favorite authors with all of her books...and I'll add her to the list of writers I'll always buy no matter what. A great read all around.
Keeps you UP At Night.......2004-08-22
One of my rules of thumb for what makes a good book is one that keeps me up past my scheduled bedtime. Roxanne St.Claire manages to weave a sexy, fast-paced race across the continent. She builds not just believable characters, but characters that you want to be, to meet, to sit down and have a drink with.
Janine is not your "spunky" heroine cliche. She is someone who conquers her own fears and exhibits flaws. Luc struggles with guilt and remorse both from his past as well as his present attraction to Janine.
Their subsequent travels across the continent force them to face not just fears but feelings of attraction as well. There is danger and you feel the tension that comes from a well-drawn villain as well.
The ending surpassed "happily ever after" for me and transcended into "yeah, that's the way it should go".
Thanks to Ms. St.Claire for a book that offered twists and turns that kept me up at night. I will be buying anything with her name on it from now on.

Customer Reviews:
FLIRT-ing has never been this much fun!.......2007-05-19
FLIRT intern, Kiyoko Katsuda, was utterly ecstatic when her older sister, and super successful model, Miko, came to visit the interns loft in NYC during a runway show. But when she spots the Argentine beauty - and photography expert - Alexa Veron, she feels as if she's struck gold. Alexa's wild mane of hair, bubbly - and oft-times mischievous - personality, and gorgeous skin are absolutely striking. Enough so that Miko feels that Alexa has the potential to become a top model herself. Alexa is unsure of her opinion. She's always been more comfortable behind the camera, shooting subjects, and creating her own works of art, and feels that she'll never be good enough to rock the runway or pose for portraits. But when Miko announces to everyone that she's landed a meeting for Alexa with her own modeling company in Paris, Alexa finds it impossible to turn down a breathtaking trip to France. Packing her belongings, along with the exotic Kiyoko, the two interns find themselves coasting past the Eiffel Tower, and checking out the European hotties located on just about every corner. But it's obvious that not everyday with be as fun. Alexa has various photo shoots booked, and both girls have assignments from FLIRT that will certainly take up a large amount of their time. But assignments go out the window when both girls meet, and fall for, an American model named Lucas, who just happens to be a Casanova with the ladies. His incessant flirting, and Kiyoko's sudden jealousy of Alexa, leave the two girls at each others throats, and in the midst of a catfight that should put them to shame. Refusing to ride on Alexa's coattails, Kiyoko decides to do her own thing while in the city of lights, and soon fins herself face-to-face with a reclusive singer/songwriter, who made a bang on the music scene years ago, then went into hiding, leaving critics and fans alike believing that he was...deceased. Kiyoko is determined to land an interview with the star, and devotes all of her time to sitting around a local patisserie that he frequents. But during all that time, she begins thinking of her treatment towards Alexa, and misses their friendship.
Meanwhile, back in New York City, Melanie and Liv are up to their ears in work, and finding it difficult to keep up with their own growing workloads, while, at the same time, trying to assist staff members with photocopies and assignments that Alexa and Kiyoko usually take on. But FLIRT isn't the only thing keeping the girls occupied. Liv has just sold some of her creations to a local boutique, and is working as hard as possible to fill the order by the deadline. As if that weren't enough, she's attempting to balance school, create costumes for her boyfriend, Eli's, latest film production, and write a killer essay that could possibly land her an apprenticeship with the design company Florentina. Mel, on the other hand, has certainly bitten off more than she can chew. Between her work at FLIRT, school, and her job at a local diner, she's worked to the bone. But she's determined not to drop her various hobbies and interests. So she agrees to help get the school's blooming 'lit 'zine off the ground, by editing fiction. She's also working hard with her own writing, and attempting to keep Kiyoko on track by badgering her with news of her lingering deadline. Then there's helping Liv. Mel refuses to let her best friend fall behind in her work, so she drops her own responsibilities to help Liv put together designs, and better her chances for staying in New York. But when Mel's idol, author Laurel Healy, takes on a spot as guest editor at FLIRT, all bets are off.
Since the start of the FLIRT series, Nicole Clarke has kept the girls solidified as one unit by making them fairly inseparable, and keeping all of the interns stationed in one spot - New York City. In FRENCH TWIST, however, Clarke gives the girls a little breathing room to spread their wings and fly - literally - out on their own. Kiyoko and Alexa embrace their usual, wild child personalities. However, this time Kiyoko has taken on a new accessory - the green-eyed monster. Her jealousy is evident in each scene she appears in; and her constant anger towards Alexa only works to make her seem unfriendly and downright nasty, even though die-hard FLIRT fans know that Kiyoko is anything but. Alexa, on the other hand, seems to have toned down her flamboyant personality. In fact, during their stay in Paris, Alexa seems to have taken on a more reserved, quiet, demure persona, that instantly makes the reader question where the "old" Alexa has disappeared to. Don't get me wrong, this "new" Alexa is just as fun as before, but she lacks the sparkle and mischievousness that were once her trademarks. It's enough to make the reader realize that Alexa isn't necessarily happy in front of the camera, and craves to be back behind the camera, clicking away as she photographs subjects of all shapes, sizes, and species. Liv, while always ladylike and sweet, seems to spend more time thinking about herself within the pages of FRENCH TWIST than usual. Her constant me, me, me way of thinking makes it seem as if she has forgotten what friendship is all about, and seems to be using Mel more than ever to accomplish her various tasks, even though she knows that Mel is under an immense amount of pressure herself. Mel still reigns queen of managing to keep it all together. She never loses hope that she'll accomplish what she has set out to do, and her constant ability to help a friend in need, no matter how much it cuts into her own life, only works to make her more appealing and lovable to readers. Of course, it would always be nice to see her show some assertiveness for once, and let the people surrounding her know that she needs help sometimes, as well. Those who have followed the FLIRT series from book one will love the fact that Mel's tumultuous relationship with Emma Lyric's - the interns' housemother - son, Nick, finally comes to a head; but the revelation makes me question whether looose ends are being tied up for a reason - such as the series is coming to an end. Clarke has penned another delicious installment that paves the way for the next masterpiece - LONDON CALLING. FLIRT-ing has never been this much fun!

Exploring Louisiana Through A Famliar Old Tale.......1999-11-03
A version of Little Red Ridding Hood that you will not be able to forget. Sheila Hebert Collins has done a wonderful job of giving Little Red Ridding Hood a cajun twist. The reader of this book is able to "play" with some french words, which children will love. This book hits a homerun with this reader!
Excellent Cajun Fairy Tale that is educational and fun........1998-06-25
Petite Rouge is the Cajun version of Little Red Riding Hood. It is filled with Cajun French words and expressions with sound spellings and definitions on each page. It is story that can be enjoyed by first grade on up. It is especially appreciated by displaced Cajuns very lonesome for their Louisiana home and all the Louisiana maw maws and paw paws eager to share their heritage and culture. It follows the Little Red Riding Hood Story but ofcourse is adapted to the Louisiana bayous and swamps. Ofcourse, it has a happy ending, but not for that gator, who ends up in a sauce piquante. The book ends with a Cajun recipe for alligator sauce piquante. This is a enjoyable book for the whole family.
