Customer Reviews:
The author is standing in front of my class right now.......2006-04-15
The author of this book, Larry Kanuit, is standing in front of my high school English class right now telling the students how he researches his books and how he writes. About myself: I was a journalist for 15 years before becoming a teacher; much of that career was spent in Alaska. I now teach in Bush Alaska. Most of my students are Native Alaskans. Reviewers who have stated that the author is inventing his stories are wrong. Period. Bear-lovers who say that the author is demonizing bears sound as if they have no real-life, consistent, up-close experience with bears. True, most bears leave you alone. Also true, bears are unpredictable and they will attack, maul, and kill you, without provication or apparent reason. Kanuit is explaining right now to the students how he interviews the victims (or survivors), uses police and fish and game documents, and essentially "writes a research paper." His research is good. I happen to know some of the same people in his stories, and their stories match the stories in the book. It's a good read. You won't want to walk into the Alaskan Bush without a good firearm, though.
Fast, Entertaining Read - Not a Guide to Visiting Bear Country.......2005-07-06
Larry Kaniut has made a career of writing white-knuckled real life thrillers. This book is no different. It's kind of like a car accident, once you start reading you can't turn your eyes away. It's easy to get into the book but hard to put down. What better material than bear attacks to capture your imagination.
There are lessons to learn from this book, but for the most part it is a collection of sensational bear stories presented for their entertainment value. If you are looking for a scientific look at bear attacks, this might not be the book for you - Try Stephen Herrero's Bear Attacks, Their Causes and Avoidence.
If you want a book that throws one gripping bear attack after another, get this one. And if you didn't get enough from this book, try More Bear Tales by Larry Kaniut.
One more bit of advice, read this one in your bedroom, not in a tent in the middle of Denali National Park.
boring, silly, harmful to bears.......2004-12-23
Kaniut repeats the same story 200-300 times. A man or woman bumps into a bear. The bear tears the man or woman to pieces. You get all the gross details about their injuries. They speculate about what went wrong. To me, this is like reading a book about 300 car accidents. There's an accident. You get to read clinical descriptions about the injuries people suffer. The survivors speculate about what went wrong. Just as people in auto accidents tend to blame the other driver, the people in Kaniut's bear tales tend to blame the bear for the accident. As a rule, the people injured by bears in Alaska Bear Tales don't know the first thing about bears, so you, the reader, get bombarded with inaccurate, biased information about bears. All the negative comments about bears add up; this book portrays bears as monsters or demons.
A good collection of bear stories but...........2001-07-17
The "rapid fire" writing style renders this book difficult to read. The book is 300 pages long and it contains over 200 bear stories. Some are only a few words long and lack detail to such an extent that I wonder why they were included. Some are loaded with useful information. Others are simply pointless. Most were taken from a magazine verbatim.
Cynthia Dusel-Bacon's story alone was worth the price of the book. She wrote it herself after her terrible mauling and Larry Kaniut quoted it. Read her story and tell me you don't think black bears are dangerous and predatory.
I'd buy this book and keep it on my book shelf but I must tell you that I couldn't finish it because the last few chapters were simply too boring to be tolerable.
What an author and what a book.......2000-11-12
I will admit a little that am am a little partial to Larry Kaniut's books. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Kaniut as n English Teacher when I was in Junior High in Anchorage around 1980. During that time Mr. Kaniut would read to us the sotries that are contained in Alaska Bear Tales. As a struggling student he made me want to read and write.
I am lucky yo have a first edition copy of the book. In Alsak Bear Tales I knwo some of the people in the book so the stories are more real to me. Mr. Kanuit does a great job in pulling the reader into the story. His ability to get people to share the most horrific details of their encounters with bears keeps you wanting more.
Anyone looking to read real life drama this is the book to start with. You will not wan tto put the book down. Luckt for us Mr. Kaniut has written more then one book. Enjoy!
Book Description
In a sequel to "Alaska's Bear Tales," Larry Kaniut offers more true stories of encounters between bears and humans that are action-packed and compelling. Both titles are musts for all who love a good adventure story.

"Wanton destruction of wildlife".......2005-10-07
This is an excellent overview of all aspects of bears. It covers hunting, wandering in their habitat, living in the same general area and even some natural instinct and behavior of bears.I have a great interest in nature and derive much satisfaction from observing all flora and fauna and spend a fair amount of time in the great outdoors.Though I have never spent any time in the north, nature is nature wherever one goes.Whether I'm in the High Sierras of Yosemite, the deserts of the Southwest,Arizona,New Mexico, the Everglades and Keys of Florida,on the Gulf Stream off North Carolina or out over the underwater canyons off San Franscisco; nature is magnificent in all respects.I have seen a few bears in the wild here in Ontario, moose are fairly common if you wander where they are.Snakes, various other reptiles, mammals and my first love birds are everywhere for the enjoyment of all. However, this book makes one wonder about the whole idea of "sport" hunting. Is it really right wanting to set out to destruct such a magnificient creature as a Grizzly simply to satisfy some moron's idea of accomplishing a great act of searching ,slaughtering, and claiming a trophy .How much of an accomplishment is it anyway, when one hires a guide to lead them to their prey,be there to back them up if they blunder,or even lay out bait and sit in a tree and wait for the animal to come to them ;and even if the "sportsman" dislikes the connotation of "shooting fish in a barrel,in all reality ,their accomplishment differs little from slaughtering an animal in pen.At least when a cow is slaughtered,it was raised for that purpose, killed as humanely as possible versus target practice by an incompentent yahoo with a high powered rifle, far exceeding his skill, more often leaving their prey to wander off and die in agony and on top of that, leaving orphaned cubs. And on top of it all, rationalizing it as a "sport"
In my excursions ,it gives me great satisfaction in finding a bird or anminal,enjoying watching it go about its business,then watch it go its way.Compare that to blasting it to kingdom come and leaving it a mass of guts and blood;just to be able to say;
"Look at me,aren't I great,look at what I did."
After reading this book,I had some reluctance about rating it
5 Stars. My rating is based on how well it shows the thinking behind the type of people who pride themselves in destroying these magnificient animals and for no other purpose than self gratification. It comes through very clearly that they have no respect for these bears, other than their own self protection. In other words, these bears are nothing to them but a target and trophy;and to pretend elsewise is nothing short of self-delusion.
Maybe it would be poetic justice to make a game out of bear hunting to have snipers shoot at them as they go about their brave pursuits.Now,wouldn't that make a real "sport" out of it;
if it's, a sport they're really looking for.
Read this book or you will be eaten!.......2001-11-15
Is this book exciting ? Does a bear sh*t in the woods ? This book, a couple of bears (and a couple of beers) is all one needs for some great reedin'. It kept me occupied while I await the release of Fox's "When Animals Attack IV". It kept me up all night, and I ain't takin' Viagra neither.
Great Book and Fast Read.......1999-08-12
The saga continues from the first book. Spine tingling reading full of chills, thrills, and even some laughs. Do not pass this book up but be prepared to not be able to put this book down!
An eye opener.......1998-10-29
Mr Kaniut has done it again. As in the first book Alaskan Bear Tales this one picks up where it left off. More chilling tales of the Ursus arctos horribilis in action. You can bet that anyone who reads this work will think twice about doing a dumb thing around a very unpredictable bear. The book is much more than a blood and guts thriller. It affords the reader an open minded look at the attacks and as you read you find yourself second guessing the victims. Larry has put forth alot of effort in his research I enjoyed the book and hope that there is a book three in the works...

A different slant on those lovable bears........2006-02-15
We picked this book up in the Anchorage airport gift shop in 2001 on our way to visit our Alaskan relatives in Nome. It is a delightful and very informative book about bears for both adults and children, although the focus is on children.
This is not the traditional Three Bears story. Alaska's Three Bears is about the three kinds of bears one might find in that great state and North America: the grizzly, the polar bear and the black bear. The opening sentence begins, "Once upon a time...", but in an box below the story line on every page is valuable information about bears in general and each of the three species of bear in particular.
The first information paragraph states: "There are three species of bear in North America. Grizzlies used to roam from Ohio to California, now the big brown bears have been driven north onto the last pieces of remote land. Black bear can still be found in forests throughout the U.S. but only in Alaska and Canada can you find all three bears; the grizzly, polar bear and black bear, living in the wilderness we call bear country." Did you know all that?
The book tells how each bear chose the place where he wanted to live. The polar bear liked the cold, snow and ice so he stayed in the far north. The grizzly liked the frolicking river with its salmon, the roots he could dig and animals he could chase. The little black bear finally chose the forest with its bug-filled stumps and places to hide. In the end, no matter how far each roamed, they could always find their way back home.
At the back of the book is a Teacher Resource Guide with suggestions on how to use the book. There's a page of dos and don'ts for traveling about in bear country, and also a lovely page of colorful covers of other titles available from Paws IV published by Seattle's Sasquatch Press.
Published in 1992, this book remains a popular one for youngsters of all ages. Though far from being a youngster, I find myself taking it off the bookshelf from time to time to reread the valuable information it contains and to enjoy the magnificent illustrations by Shelley Gill.

An adult's opinion.......2002-07-31
This is another book we read to our students at our summer reading program. They loved it. They thought the drawings were terrific, and especially liked the borders on each page. They enjoyed learning more about bears, and they thought it was a neat twist on the original story of the three bears. I highly recommend this book to any teacher who wants to do a unit on bears - it's a book that successfully merges entertainment and educaational components.

I like this book because it is full of interesting facts about bears.I also like your visit and how they tell you how tall they are. My favorite prat is when the the brown baer went home to his forest.Even thoe he was the smallest.I even found out some new info like Blak bears just eat the heads of the fish because they have to eat a surtin amount of fat.

Medievil Tale of Love and Loyalty.......2007-08-24
Madeleine de la Haute Vironge, a Norman born nobel woman, was raised in a convent but puts off her vows wishing for love and a family...she unwittingly gets her wish when her father and brother are killed at war and to protect the baroney, King William orders her to marry...however she asks for and receives permission to choose her own husband. Half English-half Norman Aimery de Gaillard is torn between his loyalty to his king and his mother's English relatives cause for rebellion. He vows not to betray the king, but roams the forest helping the people as the Golden Hart. He meets and falls for a beautiful young woman in the forest, but circumstances lead him to believe she is a cruel vengeful woman and he spurns her on their next meeting. When he is ordered by the king to be one of three possible husbands to the heiress of Baderly he stunned to find out she is Madeleine. Believing the worst of her and knowing she recognizes him, Aimery tries to convince her to choose one of the other two suitors. Madeliene is torn with her choice, choose a man she hates or a man who hates her.
This is a story full of tests of loyalty. The medievil tales are always difficult to read because circumstances were so often life or death and marriages based political alliances rather than love. However, this is a wonderful story. At times, the characters could be infuriating but I still liked both
Somewhat rough historical romance.......2007-06-26
Our hero Aimery is half Norman half Saxon which at the time of the Norman invasion was not a light burden to carry. The heroine Madeline must marry to keep her estate and escape the convent life after the death of her father and a brother, so they end up together. Their relationship doesn't start nor remains well, though, since Aimery thinks Madeleine is responsible for the bad treatment of her tenants (actually is her uncle and aunt's work) and she thinks he is a traitor. It takes them forever to sort things out. Also the wedding night and much of the action throughout the book is very much the same, with Aimery practically forcing himself on Madeleine. It doesn't help the hero in the reader's eyes the way he silently consent to the villager's plotting against Madeleine, even when it ends up in physical violence toward her. Violence and female abuse was quite common back then but might not go well with modern readers. Long-suffering victimized heroine, never-ending misunderstandings and the hero's stupid moral conflict (the 'oh-I-love-her-but-she-is-a-curse-on-my-people' thing) turns it into a very weary read. When they finally sort things out it was so simple you wonder why they just couldn't do it sooner.
If you cannot stomach a hero who is conivent with the villains stay away from this one. But if you're a Woodiwiss fan you may well like this one.
Good, but I had higher expectations.......2006-04-24
In 11th century England, the last Anglo-Saxon king will meet his defeat in the hands of the Normans. A new king is crowned amidst the country's political upheaval. Fifteen months after King William's coronation, his beloved queen, Matilda, visits a convent in Normandy to advice Madeleine de la Haute Vironge of her father's death, and of the king's wish for her to return to the world and marry. Now with three lords to choose from, Madeleine is drawn to the magnificent man who stirs both fear and desire in her.
Aimery de Gaillard is half Norman, half English who is torn between his loyalty to the king and the desire to help the English people. So he masquerades as Golden Heart, the savior of the common people. But his disguise is threatened when the king orders him to marry Madeleine. To make matters worse, he suspects her of cruelty to the people in her land. And so begins a relationship full of misunderstandings...
LORD OF MY HEART is my first novel by Jo Beverley. As I like romance novels based on the medieval era, I picked up this book hoping for something like Woodiwiss' THE WOLF AND THE DOVE. While the rich historical background is very interesting, I didn't feel quite the same about the development in the relation between the main characters. I felt that the initial spark we saw in their first meetings, when Aimery was masquerading, could have been better explored, and I wanted more depth in their romance.
Overall, I did like the way the author has described the setting and atmosphere of the time for it shows the depth of research that was done before the novel was written. I just wish that more focus were made on the romance because I quite enjoyed their initial meetings.
I don't think Beverley is capable of a bad novel!!.......2005-07-22
The only thing that keep this from 5 stars is the time period - and the history is rather confusing. HOWEVER the characters are every bit as deep and as wonderful as in every other Beverley novel. She is amazing the way she writes. Aimery was so believalby torn between his Saxon and Norman roots, this his wife had such a difficult time knowing where his loyalites lied and thus she just wrongly believed she could not trust him. However Madeline wanted to trust him, and she so wanted to give into her heart, because oh my her heart really loved this man. Actually Aimery was having a more difficult time trusting Madeline because so many things prior to their marriage pointed wrongly to her being a horrible person. Slowly very slowly this couple comes together beautifully - and even though it is back in this boring, horrible time period it still is a beautiful love story. Beverly writes at the end of the book her dislike of this time period because there was so much strife and unrest - she recognizes the difficulty of having such a beautiful book written about it. But true to her great abilities she gives Aimery and Madeline - a wonderful deserving love story!!
boring .. boring.. boring.......2005-04-13
This is the worst romance book i ever read. The story line is boring, the hero is a brute and the heroine is spineless. I just dont understand why after all the abuse the hero heaped upon the heroine, she still could fall in love with him
