      Book Description

Roland Deschain and his ka-tet are bearing southeast through the forests of Mid-World, the almost timeless landscape that seems to stretch from the wreckage of civility that defined Roland's youth to the crimson chaos that seems the future's only promise. Followers of Stephen King's epic series know Roland well, or as well as this enigmatic hero can be known. They also know the companions who have been drawn to his quest for the Dark Tower: Eddie Dean and his wife, Susannah; Jake Chambers, the boy who has come twice through the doorway of death into Roland's world; and Oy, the Billy Bumbler.

In this long-awaited fifth novel in the saga, their path takes them to the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis, a tranquil valley community of farmers and ranchers on Mid-World's borderlands. Beyond the town the rocky ground rises towards the hulking darkness of Thunderclap, the source of a terrible affliction that is slowly stealing the community's soul. One of the town's residents is Pere Callahan, a ruined priest who, like Susannah, Eddie and Jake, passed through one of the portals that lead both into and out of Roland's world.

As Father Callahan tells the ka-tet the astonishing story of what happened following his shamed departure from Maine in 1977, his connection to the Dark Tower becomes clear, as does the danger facing a single red rose in a vacant lot off Second Avenue in midtown Manhattan. For Calla Bryn Sturgis, danger gathers in the east like a storm cloud. The Wolves of Thunderclap and their unspeakable depredation are coming. To resist them is to risk all, but these are odds the gunslingers are used to, and they can give the Calla folken both courage and cunning. Their guns, however, will not be enough.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Series.......2007-10-09

Roland is the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers. The world he lives in is quite different from our own, yet it bears striking similarities to it. Politically organized along the lines of a feudal society, it shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West, as well as bearing magical powers and the relics of a highly advanced, but long vanished, society. Roland's quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to either be, or be located at, the nexus of all universes. Roland's world is said to have "moved on," and indeed it appears to be coming apart at the seams -- mighty nations are being torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish from the face of the earth without a trace, time does not flow in an orderly fashion; even the sun sometimes rises in the north and sets in the east. As the series opens, Roland's motives, goals, and even his age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries.

This series was mostly inspired by the epic poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" by Robert Browning, the full text of which was included in an appendix to the final volume. In the preface to the revised 2003 edition of The Gunslinger, King also identifies The Lord of the Rings, the Arthurian Legend, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as inspirations. He identifies Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name" character as one of the major inspirations for Roland. King's style of location names in the series, such as Mid-World, and his development of a unique language abstract to our own, are also influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien's work.

The Dark Tower is often described in the novels as a real structure, and also as a metaphor. Part of Roland's fictional quest lies in discovering the true nature of the Tower. The series incorporates themes from multiple genres, including fantasy fiction, science fantasy, horror, and western elements. King has described the series as his magnum opus; beside the seven novels that comprise the series proper, many of his other books are related to the story, introducing concepts and characters that come into play as the series progresses.

5 out of 5 stars Epic storytelling and more.......2007-09-05

With the Dark Tower series Stephen King has managed to combine an epic fantasy quest with classic Old Westerns, a bit of gothic horror, and urban fantasy thrown in for good measure. What you get from this mix is a series destined to be a classic.

Roland the gunslinger from Gilead and his ka-tet, having survived a giant mechanical bear and other evils in Wizard and Glass, stumble upon the small town of Calla Bryn Surgis. Once in a generation this town with an unusually large number of twins, must give up half of its children to "the Wolves" who take them to the dark land of Thunderclap for a few days and send them back as raving idiots who eventually grow into giants and die in their thirties. Just like the little Mexican town in the classic Western the farmers of this small community ask the traveling gunslingers to help them fight off the bad guys, but this is no ordinary Western.

King has his heroes traveling back and forth to 1970s New York on their quest to save the rose that is the Dark Tower, too, fighting bad guys along the way and discovering the bizarre connections between his world and ours. Also, thrown into the mix is the disgraced Father Callahan of 'Salem's Lot, Maine who just happens to be the local priest in the Calla. Add to that Susannah, a recovering schizophrenic member of the ka-tet, who is carrying something unspeakable in her womb, a robot named Andy who serves the farmers of the Calla by carrying messages and telling horoscopes, and you've got the most unusual adventure story to come out in years.

Amid all this King spins out a story that is both compelling and homey somehow. I felt like I was listening to him tell it by a campfire on a crisp autumn night. Even if you are not normally a Stephen King fan b/c you don't read horror fiction give this book, and this series a try. Fantasy and Sci-fi fans will especially love it.

Beware if you are offended by violence and language. It is not the worst out there, but this is adult stuff.

1 out of 5 stars The Dark Tower series went from classic to rubbish in this entry. .......2007-08-31

I love the first four books in this series, but when this crappy follow-up came out, I found that it sucks hard. The story is stupid and the writing is lame. Its garbage. Ignore this rubbish and stick with Dark Tower Novels 1-4.

5 out of 5 stars Stephen the king.......2007-08-29

I admire Stephen Kings work. He is one of the few writers out there, who actually gets better with every book he writes. The Dark Tower series, I feel is quite simply Kings quintessential story, his master piece.

It has taken him most of his adult life to write his tale of the 'The Gun Slinger', but my wasn't it worth the wait. I fully recommend this book, most people who are considering this book, I imagine will already be fans of the series, and you will not be disappointed! For those who are new to Roland's tale, what are you waiting for, 'The Tower' awaits......

Amanda Quick proves once again that opposites most definitely do attract in her new Regency romance, I Thee Wed. Sharp-witted lady's companion Emma Greyson has as much trouble holding a job as she does holding her tongue. But lack of references can't deter Emma; she just writes her own and finagles a new position. Her present employment brings Emma to a tedious house party in the country where she spends most of her time trying to dodge the lecherous groping of the gentlemen guests. In fact, to avoid just such an encounter Emma is forced to hide in a wardrobe. The only problem is that the space is already occupied--by mysterious financier Edison Stokes, no less! Stokes is on a quest to locate a volume of arcane potions that could prove deadly if it falls into the wrong hands, and he believes the text is in the possession of one of the partygoers. Emma soon finds herself the focus of another kind of attention, equally undesirable, when her highly developed intuition makes her susceptible to the powerful potions of the black arts. To protect her, Stokes hires Emma to be his assistant, but quickly realizes that keeping Emma out of danger is a full-time job. The only solution is to keep her close to him--very close to him. And neither Stokes nor Emma minds that at all! Bestselling author Amanda Quick keeps readers begging for more in this highly entertaining historical. --Alison Trinkle

            Book Description

It isn't easy making a living as a lady's companion when one possesses a sharp tongue and an original mind. That's why Emma Greyson has gone through three such positions in six months. Her current post at a tiresome country house party has her bored to tears--until an extraordinary encounter with the legendary Edison Stokes leads to a secret position as his assistant.

Stokes is on a peculiar mission, searching for an anonymous thief who has stolen an ancient book of arcane potions. He suspects his quarry is among the party's guests--and that the villain is looking for an intuitive woman on whom to test a certain elixir. A woman just like Emma...

For Emma, the new post brings unexpected passion and chilling danger.  But when murder strikes, she realizes the awful truth. Unless she and Edison devise a scheme to outwit a merciless killer, she could forever lose the man of her dreams--and even her very life....

            5 out of 5 stars Regency Wit.......2005-06-07

Anyone who doesn't love this book obviously has no clue what English wit is all about. I found the dialogue refreshing and the characters wonderfully alive. There has never been a book by Amanda Quick that I didn't like. I espcially like the ones about Vanza, which include I Thee Wed, Wicked Widow, and Lie by Moonlight. What a wonderful writer she is. If I've had a hard day or feeling a bit blue, I pick up an Amanda Quick book. If I've had a great day, reading one of her books makes me feel even better. She's one of the best Regency writer's ever, and I Thee Wed is one of her best.

            3 out of 5 stars I Thee Wed.......2004-12-30

I hadn't read a Amanda Quick novel in a few years but decided to give this one a try. I won't be reading another of hers anytime soon. It seemed like the plot was stuck in one place and didnt EVER go anywhere. Frankly I was disappointed. Guess I'll stick with some other authors who can actually write a story that has more than one theme.

            5 out of 5 stars I was happily surprised!.......2004-10-07

After reading the hoards of flat reviews for Amanda Quick's _I Thee Wed_ I was expecting a horrendous book that had not even an inkling of Ms. Quick's obvious talent. I was certainly surprised to find that _I Thee Wed_ had the same flare that I've become accustomed to from Amanda Quick.

This book had me interested from the very first page! I don't usually become involved until at least two chapters have finished, but the very first page of this book started off with a bang. As always, Ms. Quick set forth a mystery that intrigued the mind and stirred the senses. Amid this mystery, Ms. Quick expertly tailored two characters that were both passionate, intricate and well developed.

Emma is delightful! She is self-reliant, resolute and determined. She also was not quite as flighty as some of Ms. Quick's other heroines. Don't get me wrong, I really love all of Ms. Quick's heroines, but Emma struck me as the most level-headed and capable of all.

Edison is a nice change from the usual brooding, dark heroes in Ms. Quick's books and seemed to have a devil-may-care twist to his personality. It was nice to see a man, who though haunted by his past, had overcome it and still held a love of life.

Their relationship, though not quite as passionate as some, has a fairy-tale-like quality that is sweet and endearing. I loved that Emma and Edison were able to conduct a deep relationship outside of the bedroom. All too often romance authors lead you to the misconception that sex is all there is to love. Ms. Quick has never used this device, she always has her characters communicate on other levels besides the carnal and Edison and Emma pull this off quite amiably. I thoroughly believed that they loved each other and I enjoyed their chemistry.

Once again, Ms. Quick alluded to a character from another of her books and I was elated! It's something she's only recently started and I hope she continues to do from now on.

All in all, I was more than satisfied with _I Thee Wed_. It held all the magic and mystery that has made me an Amanda Quick fan. Please, if you've read this book and didn't like it, try it again -- you must have missed something the first time. Also, if you're one of the readers out there discouraged by the bland reviews, give it a try with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Relatively fun read.......2004-07-06

The independent and plain-speaking Emma Greyson is a great gal, but her refreshing personality makes her role as a professional companion problematic. She has lost at least one post in the past and fears losing her present one. She needs money badly to support her sister as they are both orphans.

Enter the iconoclastic and fabulously wealthy Edison Stokes, who is on the hunt for a psychic potion and missing book from a secret mystical society he used to belong to. Turns out one villain has big plans for Emma, plans that make her a valuable assistant for Edison.

Edison therefore secretly hires Emma, and the pleasing, often funny, banter between Emma and Edison begins. A shocking development soon pushes their relationship deeper than either had intended. I Thee Wed is at its best when it focuses on their developing rapport. Author Amanda Quick is very good at creating entertaining dialogue.

I Thee Wed has well-drawn characters, humor, an engaging plot, and a believable love story (though I would have liked for it to have been more passionate), which makes for a pretty good read.

The only thing that took away from my enjoyment was the secret society storyline. It was not developed in a believable way so often took me out of the story. Vanza came across as a childish and simplistic society, when I'm sure Quick intended for it to have more substance behind it. As it was, I couldn't imagine why our hero had ever been a member of it. Furthermore, he certainly didn't act like anyone who had ever been a member of a mystical society-he did not have a spiritual bone in his body or spiritual insight in his mind.

This lack of credibility in the suspense portion did mar my enjoyment. I hope that Quick develops this portion of her stories more fully in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A good one of Ms.Quick's.......2003-08-12

I am very fond of this particuarly book of hers I though it was very cool. I love Edison he has got to be one of her better male characters. I found the whole book to be quite good and interesting. I recommened it to anyone who just wants a good book full of suprises.

            4 out of 5 stars Good start..........2004-10-26

I found this book to be a good start in writing own vows... or some sentences from the book can be combined to create a new vow. Probably this is what we are going to do with my fiance. I didn't finda ny particular vow that applys to any of us, however I found a couple very beatiful ones that made me cry :)

3 out of 5 stars Good information, but poor organization makes it hard to use.......2003-02-28

This book is specifically for couples wanting to write their wedding vows, whether by borrowing the words of others or using their own. There are separate chapters for secular versus religious vows, and there are also shorter chapters addressing special topics/situations such as uniting as individuals and special settings. Finally, the author offers a questionnaire to guide you in writing your own vows from scratch.

The suggestions in this book are good, as there are many beautiful and uniquely worded statements. However, the chapters themselves offer absolutely no organization, making it hard to determine exactly how the words should be used. For example, it is sometimes unclear where one segment ends and the next begins--ie, whether certain sections are designed to be used together or separately. Furthermore, there are no guidelines as to whether the couple should repeat the vows after the officiant, repeat them together, say them in exchange, etc. A final criticism is that the last two sections of the book--a personalized record of your wedding and an index of first lines--are virtual useless, as couples are unlikely to use this book as a keepsake and the index would only be helpful if you already knew the words you wanted.

One final note: if you are looking for a book to help you write you entire wedding ceremony from start to finish, this book is definitely not for you. It addresses vows only and does not contain suggestions for other ceremony elements such as the readings and the ring exchange. However, if you simply want some ideas of how to write your vows and/or are considering writing your own, you may find this book to be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The ORIGINAL and STILL THE BEST!.......2002-11-26

After reading a full page article about this book in Brides Magazine many years ago, I instantly ran out and bought it for my upcoming wedding. "Exceptional" didn't began to describe it! There were tons of beautifully written secular vows, a section of inspiring religious vows, vows for every imaginable holiday theme, and even for special settings--like garden, candlelight, seashore, and mountaintop weddings. Beyond all that, I couldn't believe how this book was so ahead of it's time with unique approaches to vows for re-marriages after a divorce, and even addressing the children in marriages of single parents. I could go on and on, but let it suffice to say that although many other books have since tried to imitate this original, "With These Words" is still my #1 choice for engagement & wedding shower presents!

And now, to top that I just read in Woman's Day magazine that the author just came out with a new book titled "Loving Vows: Inspiring Promises for Building and Renewing Your Marraige" that helps couples KEEP their wedding promises...Guess I have the perfect wedding present now too :-)

                  3 out of 5 stars Just okay..........2004-05-20

As far as Duets go, this wasn't one (two?) of the better ones that I've read. And I seem to be the only reviewer who liked the 2nd story (50 Clues He's Mr. Right) better than the other. All in all, decent, light-hearted stories. Enough to make me smile, but definitely not a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars This one knocks your socks off.......1999-11-30

Both these stories were wonderful. I particularly enjoyed Cheryl St. John's tale. Humor and pathos, beautiful writing. Cheryl gives us everything we could want in a story, except maybe to get more of them. Write faster, Cheryl! I want more!

                  5 out of 5 stars Emotionally Invigorating!.......1999-06-30

Cheryl St. John has done it once again! Her current release, "This Week I Thee Wed" is certain to pull at heart strings. Her detailed description of the characters involves the reader before they know they are entwined within these characters lives! Bravo Cheryl! Lori Kolin Mofield, Fan, Friend, Author

5 out of 5 stars A pair of humorous romances.......1999-05-31

She fibbed to her beloved grandmother by telling the elderly woman she recently married. Now photographer and all around flake Francie Karr-Taylor needs a temporary spouse to accompany her to her high school reunion because her grandmother will expect to meet her new relative. When Ryan McNair offers money to buy a family heirloom that Francie purchased at an auction, she sees her opportunity. Reluctantly, he agrees to be her husband for a week, tossing in his two kids in the bargain, in exchange for the brooch. This duo will soon learn what they really gained and lost with this trade. "For This Week I Thee Wed" is a warm, humorous relationship romance that shows the talent of Cheryl St. John to write an entertaining contemporary tale.

Over the years, the changing staff always paid homage to the first issue of "Real Men" magazine, considered a collector's item. Now five decades later, reporter Tara Butler is assigned to update the classic article Forty-Nine Things You Need to Know about a Real Man from that first edition. To help her, writer Chase Montgomery teams up with Tara. As the couple begin to work closely together on "50 Clues to Mr. Right", they fall in love. However, Tara seeks a real man based on her list of traits. She initially believed Chase lacks these qualities, but now wonders if her list needs revising. Alyssa Dean completes her pairing with a wonderfully droll tale that provides insight into romance during the baby boom era.

Both stories are light, but enjoyable romps. This collection adds to the fans' appreciation of the Duets concept of providing double the please for a single cost.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect harmony of love, laughter and a tug on our emotions.......1999-04-16

Francie Karr-Taylor is desperate. She told her grandmother she was married to a rich, handsome man and grandmother wants to meet him when Francie goes home for a class reunion. The problem: Francie isn't married, nor is she the marrying kind. She's committed to her career not a man. The solution: Blackmail the rich handsome man that comes to her door wanting something only she can give. Mix together a web of deceit, a reluctant 'husband', rebellious children and a bright old woman and you have the makings of a wonderful story. FOR THIS WEEK I THEE WED is a fun, lighthearted romp reliving the horrors and pressures of a class reunion with a sharp wit, unexpected twists and turns, and a sense of humor that actually made me laugh out loud. Cheryl St. John is an author who plays our emotions like a violin and she's created perfect harmony with love, laughter and an occasional tug on our heartstrings.
