The White Guard is less famous than Mikhail Bulgakov's comic hit, The Master and Margarita, but it is a lovely book, though completely different in tone. It is set in Kiev during the Russian revolution and tells a story about the war's effect on a middle-class family (not workers). The story was not politically correct and thereby contributed to Bulgakov's lifelong troubles with the Soviet authorities. It was, however, well-loved, and the novel was turned into a successful play at the time of its publication in 1967.

moving tale by a master of tales.......2007-07-26
bulgakov may have written master and margarita and black snow, both bizarre quirky novels, but white guard is undoubtedly the most human.
moving and touching it pulls at the heartstrings with its complexities of family relations and social environment.

Book Description
This book is the biography of the Mordwinkin family. Father, Boris was an officer in the white army in 1944. George joined the Russian Liberation Army, the division of which rebelled against the German army and liberated the Czech capital, Prague before the arrival of Soviet troops.
Customer Reviews:
A truly unique book.......2006-05-10
This book is a rare glance at Russian emigration after the upheavals of the communist takeover in 1917. The story follows the life of the Mordwinkin family as they are forced to flee Russia, try to establish a new life abroad, but still maintain their connection to the country they left behind. The book is very personal at times, but it deals in detail with Russian emigre society as a whole. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this time period of Russian history.

The writing done, Jaspar Hume put his book away and turned towards the rest. Cloud-in-the-Sky and Late Carscallen were smoking. Little could be seen of their faces; they were snuffled to the eyes. Gaspe Toujours was drinking a basin of tea, and Jeff Hyde was fitfully dozing by the fire. The dogs were above in the tent--all but Bouche, who was permitted to be near his master. Presently the sub-factor rose, took from a knapsack a small tin pail, and put it near the fire. Then he took five little cups that fitted snugly into each other, separated them, and put them also near the fire. None of the party spoke.

Book Description
Dead: one ordinary man. Just the latest in a string of losers in the wrong place at the worst time. Not the kind of case to yank New Orleans homicide detective Guy Gautreaux back from his leave of absence in Toussaint, Louisiana.
There's someone in Toussaint Guy will do anything to protect. Jilly Gable is desperate to find the love of the family who abandoned her as a child. And when the wife of a powerful New Orleans antiques dealer and loan shark sweeps into town claiming to be her mother, Jilly is all too willing to love and forget.
Slowly and methodically, evil closes in on Jilly, and only the truth--and Guy--can save her. Connecting the dots between the Big Easy and Toussaint all but cinches his case, but Jilly and Guy are still in danger. They have only each other for protection.
But will that be enough?
Customer Reviews:
Boring book.......2007-03-26
I didn't care for this novel. This was the first book I read by Stella Cameron and it will probably be the last. I just found it annoying because there were so many characters referenced in this book like I was supposed to know who they were and also care. I have a feeling that there are a series of books involving these other characters. I just found this book predictable and the dialog annoying. I know this book takes place in New Orleans/Louisiana but it was laborious to read all the same.
A Grave Mistake by Stella Cameron.......2006-12-31
Guy Gautreaux has taken a leave of absence from the New Orleans Police Department and has been working at Hormer Devol's Gas Station in nearby Toussaint. He's left the department because of a tragedy that took the life of the woman he loved. In Toussaint he seems to be finding the peace he craves. He's also getting a new chance at life with Jilly Gable, a young woman who owns "All Tarted Up", the local bakery. Then his NOPD partner Nat comes to town. It seems there's been a murder in New Orleans and the victim had a note in his pocket that sent Nat to Toussaint.
Then a body is found behind the bakery that might tie in with the murder victim in New Orleans and now Guy is back in full investigative mode. Added to Jilly's miseries, her mother, who'd abandoned her when she was a little girl, is back in town and now she's married to a very suspicious, very wealthy man, who apparently has a lot of secrets. Guy and new love Jilly have to put it all together or they may wind up deader than a doornail.
As usual, Stella Cameron has great characters in this book. Great sex too, graphic, but I like it like that, because I think it adds to the story, especially one like this. I like that Guy and Jilly are together and I think they make a good time. I think you'll think that way too. You'll just love this book. I know you will.
Sounds and acts like a sequel.......2006-11-17
First let me say this book is 200 pages to long. It starts like a bang and ends with a whimper. I still don't understand why the guy was murdered even if he knew his step-daughter was murdered, he couldn't prove it.
Second the story jumped to Toussaint La, too quickly. The story of Jilly and Guy started with the assumption that I already knew some of their history. I didn't, as this is my first (possibly last) Stella Cameron murder mystery. I have read her earlier historical novels.
Jilly was admirable, and I think she was brave in forcing Guy to consider their relationship. However her devotion to her mother who abandoned her was not quite believable. Jilly is really very sophisticated and I can't believe Preston would be able to fool her easily.
Guy seemed to be bogged down by the death of his previous girlfriend. He also seemed to care for Jilly. I am glad he finally found his center and asked her to marry him. He is still a cop at heart and I didn't think he could give up his profession.
The only really good thing about the book seems to be the secondary characters who keep you entertained. Some of them seem very unique.
I really think about a third of the book could have been deleted and still been the same read. This is not a bad book, but by the end I was just looking for closure.
Cucumber Cool...........2006-09-30
That's Stella Cameron. A Grave Mistake is yet another example of Ms. Cameron's incredible talent. The characters are as steamy as the humid Louisiana setting. I wanted to climb right into the pages and sweat with them. (Especially Guy.) It's a terrific whodunnit that weaves the grizzly mind of a psycho into a great story. I typically read historical fiction but when I see a new book by this lady I detour into the contemporary market. I can't wait for her next release. Thank you, Ms. Cameron, for providing an escape from the everyday doldrums.
A Grave Mistake.......2006-09-28
I never grow tired of Stella Cameron's creative writing. Every time I read one of her books I'm transported to the time and place where the story is set. Her characters sizzle (especially Jilly and Guy) and let's face it... Who wouldn't love to spend an afternoon with Wazoo? This thriller will have you jumping in your seat and eager to turn the page to find out what happens next. Oh, and you might want to keep a towel handy to wipe your glasses... the sex is downright steamy.

Book Description
Poor Sister Connie Fuse! She's been trying so hard, for most of her life to find and serve God. When she joined the Ain't Nobody Else Right But Us-All Others Goin' To Hell church and got saved, she thought her search was over.
That stuck in menopause church mother, Mother Pray Onn has asked the newly-converted Sister Connie Fuse to take her grave layaway payment over to the Dyin' To Git Here cemetery. She made a mistake and put it through the mail slot of the We'll Haul Your Ashes crematorium. Mother Pray Onn found out and has threaten to break her down to a nub at the next Prayer and Testimony Service.
Can the Angel-in-Training Joe Bill, along with the help of Sister Betty stop Mother Pray Onn from turning it into a free-for-all testilying service? Bringing an end to world hunger would be easier, especially since Rev. Knott Enuff Money, Deacon Laid Handz, Bishop Was Nevercalled and some of the other spiritually challenged congregation members have butted in. Read how they praise God! You do the opposite!
Customer Reviews:
You and I Both Know One.......2005-11-17
We had a Sister Connie in our church growing up. All of the teenagers would just watch her in her struggle to please the Mothers of the Church. We could also hear them just tear her apart while she did this. Ms. Walker took me back to a time that I so lovingly remember, i.e. being seen and not heard. I highly recommend this one for a journey back to the Youth Choir rehearsals and BYPU meetings, you know what I'm talking about! Kudos to her!
Another HIT!!!!.......2002-09-14
I loved this story. A story of what happens when you don't forgive is given with such humor and wonderful, leap-off-the page characters. This story is longer than the other debut effort but equally as witty and innovative.
Ms. Walker gives us the story of the Church Mother, Mother Pray Onn who thinks she knows God better than anyone and just-arrived-on-the-church-steps, Sister Connie Fuse; a woman who has been involved in numerous religions trying to find God. The premise is that Mother Pray Onn asks Sister Connie Fuse to take her grave layaway payment to the They All Dyin To Git Here Cemetery and Sister Connie Fuse (con-fused) mistakenly places it in the mail slot of the We'll Haul Your Ashes crematorium. That little mistake sets off a series of hilarious attempts at payback by Mother Pray Onn. All she needed to do was accept Sister Connie Fuse's apology, but no, Mother Pray Onn decides to get back at her.
I love the character Ma Cile, Deacon Laid Handz and Rev. Knott Enuff Money characters. I also love the idea that the children bring about an understanding that the spiritally-challenged members of the Ain't Nobody Else Right But Us-All Others Goin' To hell church couldn't begin to understand.
Like her other story, Sister Betty....I would love to see this story on the stage or in any visual setting.
I read where Ms. Walker has been signed by a major publisher. I'm sure this will be just the beginning for this very talented writer. July 03 cannot come fast enough for me.
funny with a message.......2002-07-28
The author, Pat G'Orge Walker, has created some of the funniest characters I've read about and placed them in some hilarious situations. In between laughter so hard it makes your face hurt, you get a powerful message. Make no mistake, the author is biblically sound in her writings and even more, there are people who really act this way. I think Sister Betty and Connie Fuse would make great movies.
This Book Will Make You Hurt From Laughing!.......2002-01-07
If you are looking for side-splitting humor, Sister Connie Fuse Makes A Grave Mistake, is a short stress-relieving read. Not only are the characters memorable, you may know the real-life versions in your local church. Pat G'Orge Walker does a wonderful job of tickling the funny bone and revealing the true essence of what it means to be a Christian.
Don't miss, Sister Betty! God is Calling You, the first short story in this collection of adventures of the "Ain't Nobody Else Right But Us - All Others Goin to Hell" congregation. Sister Betty makes an appearance in this story along with some others.
Hilarious.......2002-01-04
I read the first book about Sister Betty and thought I would cry from laughing so hard. But Sister Connie Fuse had me doubling over. What a great way to give a message about forgiveness. First of all I'd like to know how the author came up with the idea of someone accidentally taking a grave layaway payment to a crematorium instead of a cemetery and then have a story where the church members got together like they were going to a boxing match between Mother Pray Onn and poor Sister Connie Fuse.
I love the way the author took the innocence of children and made the adults re-examine their behaviour of bickering and unforgiveness.
I must see this on the screen. Miss Walker's writing is so vivid and her dialogue unforgettable. I particularly loved the character of Ma Cile who's favorite food is a pigfoot fajita and only has one eye. All the characters from Rev. Knott Enuff Money to Deacon Laid Handz were written with such individuality that the author never had to say who was saying what. That kind of writing takes skills and this author has them.
I thought I was a fan when I saw her perform, I'm definitely one after reading these two books.

Book Description
A spa stay turns into a homicidal holiday...
A bit snobbish and a trifle high-strung, Sybil Foster prides herself on owning the finest estate in Upper Quintern and hiring the best gardener. In fact, she is rapturous over the new asparagus beds when a visit from her unwelcome stepson sends her scurrying to a chic spa for a rest cure, a liaison with the spa's director...and an apparent suicide. Her autopsy holds one surprise, a secret drawer a second. And Inspector Roderick Alleyn, C.I.D., digging about Upper Quintern, may unearth still a third...deeply buried motive for murder.
Customer Reviews:
Not Marsh's best.......2003-10-05
Routine murder investigation in rural England featuring Ngaio Marsh's signature detective Roderick Alleyn. An heiress is murdered and suspicion immediately falls upon her doctor, who recently became her fiance and received a tidy bequest in a new will. But what of her sullen stepson and the mystery of the Black Alexander?
A good if routine murder mystery. I enjoyed Death of a Peer (aka A Surfeit of Lampreys) more.
A pleasant surprise.......2003-03-09
I don't know why I've never read any of Marsh's books. Perhaps I expected them to be in the "cosy" style or formulaic. This was not the case, I'm relieved to say. Grave Mistake has some very well-drawn characters, lots of suspects, superior plotting, and a vocabulary that puts a lot of contemporary writers to shame. While the style of speech is somewhat old-fashioned, it does not deter from a thoroughly entertaining book. Marsh was obviously a keen and perceptive observer of human nature and it shows both in the interior thoughts of the characters and in their behavior. While I doubt that I'll go back to the beginning and read the author's complete works, this was a rewarding adventure in reading.
Recommended.
A Personal Favorite.......2002-04-19
Although the solution to the crime becomes increasingly apparent as the novel progresses, GRAVE MISTAKE--along with BLACK AS HE'S PAINTED and DEAD WATER--remains one of my three favorite Marsh novels. Why? Because it is a showcase for Marsh's skill in creating and presenting memorable characters, and this tale of lost treasure and multiple murder not only abounds with them, it is told with unusual wit even for the always witty Marsh.
The story concerns the extremely rich Sybil Foster--who is also very much the hypocondriac. But on this occasion she has good reason to feel particularly under the weather: she is about to run afoul of her extremely unattractive step-son by her late first husband, who is determined to find an extremely valuable stamp his father concealed somewhere on the estate shortly before his death. Rather than cope with "Charmless Claude," she takes her self off to Greengages, a private rest home popular with the wealthy seeking a week's relaxion. But instead of relaxation, Sybil finds one crisis after another--and ultimately mysterious death.
This is one of Marsh's most brilliantly written novels, dripping with atmosphere, and of the many memorable portraits it offers the character Verity Preston--Sybil's sometime friend--is Marsh writing at the top of her skill. As noted above, savvy readers will spot the killer before Inspector Allen does, but GRAVE MISTAKE is so beautifully done that even those who do figure it out shouldn't mind in the least. A personal favorite, and strongly recommended.
Grave-ly good.......2000-11-27
Perhaps this one is a bit generic for most people, but it is one of her best from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. A good, solid mystery plot and a nice English village setting.
Much better than i anticipated........2000-08-29
First Marsh i've read in, oh, probably twentyfive years. I recall being a little unimpressed previously, which must be why i never went back to her. I am here to confirm, after this book, that i made a grave mistake in writing her off. More reviews of her work will doubtless feature here in the future, as i shall continue to read her. Like P.D. James, Marsh has the ability to create believable, likable or unlikable characters, and put them into situations in which they act and react properly. Also like James, she can create a nice twist in the tale. The mystery here is not as hard to penetrate as, for example, Christie at the height of her powers; nevertheless, it is terribly satisfying to know that i had figured out, along with Alleyn and Fox ~ the policemen involved ~ just who had killed whom and why. I love books in which the characters make me stop reading for a moment or two because i'm frustrated with what they've said or done, because it's so true and so annoying. This book made me do that several times, with several of the characters ~ Sybil Foster, the victim, Dr. Schramm, the man with a past ~ and this involuntary action is a tribute to the writing.
