When Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist) was a young man, his parents had him committed to mental hospitals three times because he wanted to be an artist--an unacceptable profession in Brazil at the time. During his numerous forced incarcerations he vowed to write some day about his experiences and the injustices of involuntary commitment. In this fable-like novel, Coelho makes good on his promise, with the creation of a fictional character named Veronika who decides to kill herself when faced with all that is wrong with the world and how powerless she feels to change anything. Although she survives her initial suicide attempt, she is committed to a mental hospital where she begins to wrestle with the meaning of mental illness and whether forced drugging should be inflicted on patients who don't fit into the narrow definition of "normal." The strength and tragedy of Veronika's fictional story was instrumental in passing new government regulations in Brazil that have made it more difficult to have a person involuntarily committed. Like any great storyteller, Coelho has used the realm of fiction to magically infiltrate and alter the realm of reality. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Twenty-four-year-old Veronika seems to have everything -- youth and beauty, boyfriends and a loving family, a fulfilling job. But something is missing in her life. So, one cold November morning, she takes a handful of sleeping pills expecting never to wake up. But she does -- at a mental hospital where she is told that she has only days to live.
Inspired by events in Coelho's own life, Veronika Decides to Die questions the meaning of madness and celebrates individuals who do not fit into patterns society considers to be normal. Bold and illuminating, it is a dazzling portrait of a young woman at the crossroads of despair and liberation, and a poetic, exuberant appreciation of each day as a renewed opportunity.
Customer Reviews:
one of my favorites.......2007-10-03
I read this book in English soft cover edition and finished it last week.
This is the first book of Paulo Coelho that I've read.
Paulo Coelho tells empathically and very beautifully stories of different characters that converge into a one coherent and thought provoking novel. I have a problem with the title (Veronika Decides To Die) as naming it amongst your favorites might indicate that you might need to be looking for psychiatric assistance too :)
I did not like the ending as I found it to be of lesser standard than the rest of the book, but maybe it's just a matter of taste.
I have no doubt I'll try another one of his very soon...
This isn't literature.......2007-09-21
This is NOT literature. If you thought the Da Vinci Code was a great book, you will probably like it. If you're into REAL literature, don't even try. Read something by Saramago instead, now that's a real writer.
Lost in Translation.......2007-09-15
It's a good book with a great message overall. I just wish that I were fluent in Spanish, because I think that it would read better in the original language. It seems that stories like this often lose something in the translation. I would recommend this book. It is a pretty good read, a little strange at times, but so are the lives that it is portraying.
A great story intertwined with life changing messages. .......2007-08-30
I was surprised at how this story began. How could a girl who believed she was completely normal, and not having any detrimental circumstances just decide to end her life? I think we all imagine (hope anyway) that there's a darn good reason for someone to do this kind of thing. I was surprised that the reasons could be as simple and complicated at the same time as Veronika's were.
Veronika fails in her suicide attempt and is placed in a mental hospital. She has a Dr. who convinces her she only has a week or two to live, while he secretly conducts an experiment to bring her out of her depression and give her the will to live.
As with all of Paulo Coelho's stories, there are many revelations throughout the story, one being that she actually did die to her old life and ways of thinking when she took those pills to begin with. While Veronika is in the hospital, her presence greatly touches and affects the lives of some other patients.
I'm not a speed reader, but I read this over the course of one day, (210 pages)and I enjoyed the story. There were many things that I read with chill bumps thinking that the author could have been speaking directly to me. Which is one of the many reasons why I love this author's books. He knows about life and how to relate and teach things through his stories. In the back of the book, there is an interesting section on the author's inspiration for the book and some personal insights about his experiences.
Gives Valuable lessons for life .......2007-08-15
I loved this book because it gives valuable lessons for life and makes living more interesting. Mr Coelho is a talented writer unlike other writers he makes you feel like you are with them in the scene. What attracted my attention the most was how realistic this book was and how it could change many people's opinion on life and it could even change the way they live. If there was a rating of 6 stars I would've chosen it.
If you haven't read it then you're missing alot on life!

Book Description
life is more then rutine..........2005-08-19

The best!.......2003-02-16
This book is truely amazing.
Having read a few of Coelho's book I've come to know his style of writing and this book was a punch in the face in the way it handled the delicate issue of the mentally-ill in such a straight-forward un-orthodox way.
This is the story of Vernika, who tries to commit suicide, fails, and is sent to a rough, secluded and horrible insane asylum, where she learns about life, the importance and the beauty of it...
Just read it...

2nd in the flower paranormal series is great fun!.......2004-09-17
They recently repacked Amaryllis and Zinnia into a single volume called Harmony, so I got these out and decided to reread them. And found I enjoyed them more the second time around. Maybe this stems from the past few Jayne Anne Krentz/ Amanda Quick books not living up to the standard of her talent, making these shine even more. These St. Helen's books, set on Harmony a plant where Earth traveler colonized are Jayne Anne writing as Jayne Castle, and writing at the very top of her form. Originally, her fans had mixed reviews over these books. This was before Paranormal Romance hit big in the sales. Now they are getting a much-deserved second look. Amaryllis, Zinnia and Orchid are the trio of tales set in this Futuristic world, with After Dark and After Glow continuing the sagas.
Zinnia Spring (don't you love JAK's names?) was called the Scarlet Lady by the press. She was mistakenly caught in the middle of a tacky tabloid triangle scandal. An interior decorator, she decides to take lemons and make lemonade. Instead of trying to shout her innocence or trying to hide, she plays the reputation for all its worth, creating a real Lady in Red. She dresses red, she drives red.
When sexy Nick Chastain, owner of a Casino, hires her things really heat up for both. Nick and Zinnia, like all the off-worlders, have a little something extra to their make up. In the Earth Colony of St. Helens on Harmony, people evolved with two supernatural talents: they were either a prism or a psychic. The prisms serve to increase the power of the psychics by channeling their powers through them, amplifying it and keeping it stable. Even the strongest of psychics needs a prism, for without them they cannot control and maintain their powers for long periods.
Though he has hired Zinnia for her decorating ability, he needs something more from her. He wants his respectability. He is an off the chart top psychic, but he needs the perfectly matched prism - and that is Zinnia. Nick's father was Bartholomew Chastain, a member of the elite of St. Helens, and a respected explorer. However, Nick's father died, leaving the legitimacy of Nick's birth unclear. Nick maintains his father married his mother just before his last expedition, but the family disputes this. Nick craves finding his father's journal and proving he is his heir. He craves that respectability.
As Zinnia falls in love with Nick, she views her Scarlet Lady as nothing more than a passing affair for Nick. How can a man, who desires respectability above all else, want the Scarlet Lady for his wife?
This is ONE super read for Jayne Anne Krentz Fan. Don't miss the first in the series Amaryllis and then Orchid. Jayne Anne, whatever name she is using, is at the peak of her prose with this book. I compliment her deft use of Multi-POV (Point of View) so missing from many of today's new writers. It makes the story richer and gives you a full sense of the story and characters instead of limits the writer and reader.
Another keeper !!! :).......2003-03-17
This is a "paranormal futuristic romance"... The name is quite long but explains well what this novel is about. It can be read as a sequel to "Amaryllis" or on its own. It takes place in the Earth colony of St. Helens, were people are divided between those with psychic powers (talents) and those who can help them to focus those powers, thus increasing them (prisms).
The main characters in this book are Nick Chastain, a powerful matrix talent and casino owner, and Zinnia Spring, a full spectrum prism. They meet because Zinnia thinks Nick kidnapped one of her clients,a stormy beginning for an exciting relationship. What follows is a mad chase for a missing journal, and a developing love story that keeps you enthralled...
I really loved this book, and consider it to be a real keeper !!!. I only regret it wasn't longer... If you have at least some imagination (a necessary ingredient in this kind of book, read it now: you won't regret doing so!!!
A little disappointed........2002-06-23
This is the author's second futuristic romance that takes place in the Earth colony of St. Helens, the same as in Amaryllis. There are heavy spoilers about Amaryllis in this book since the author mentions about important plotlines and gives away the villain in Amaryllis. Therefore, readers who have not read Amaryllis and intends to do so should not read Zinnia first.
the background:
In the distant Earth colony of St. Helens, the pioneer people from Earth that settled in the colony were stranded after the connection warp between Earth and the colony(also called "the curtain") disappeared almost 200 years ago. St. Helens was habitable but the materials from Earth quickly disintegrated. Earth's technology were also of no use. The settlers were forced to learn about the colony's natural materials and how to use them to produce everyday necessities...
the characters
Nick Chastain:
His father Bartholomew Chastain was a member of the high class. The Chastains owns some sort of company and is a respectable bunch. However, Nick's father died on an expedition without marrying Nick's mother before Nick was born. Therefore, Nick was born...and was frowned upon by the Chastains...
Zinnia Spring:
She is born from a high class family. However, her life started to come apart four years ago...
how they met:
Zinnia's client was missing. He is a rare book seller and was in the process of settling a deal with Nick. The book was supposed to be the journal of Nick's father recorded during his expedition and may have clues about his death...
overall comments:
I was a little disappointed with this book after the good experience with Amaryllis. The characters were not as well developed as Lucas and Amaryllis. I couldn't really feel their emotions and thinking while reading this book. The ending was a quick wrap up. The mystery was not explained clearly. The villain was revealed suddenly and was not very convincing. It was also so quick that Nick's relatives accepted him at the end. I really hope Orchid, the third of the St. Helen series, will be better.

LUV IT LUV IT!.......2001-08-07
This was the Favorite one in this futristic trillogy. The chemisrty between Nick and Zinnia never fades...from when they meet and are thrown together to solve the murder/mystery, the passion is always there. Along with passion, there's scandal, as well as action better than the other books in the set. If you don't buy all three-or even if you are planning to, but this one first! (even though this is the second in the set.)

Will inspire children to want to garden.......2007-09-19
Monica Wellington, established author-illustrator has created another gem of a book in Zinnia's Flower Garden. This children's book chronicles a year in the life of a little girl's flower garden. Written for ages five and up, this book will have strong appeal for the budding green thumbs in your life. Several areas in this book are exceptional.
First, the language is beautiful! Children's books are known for their simple speech. While this book is easily understandable, Monica Wellington has created a story that sounds as pleasant as a flower garden is pretty. If you listen hard enough, you will surely hear some poetic devices beneath this lovely prose.
Second, the content of this book is unexpectedly rich. Zinnia's Flower Garden isn't just a story about a garden. It's also a child's instruction manual to creating such a garden. This book would be a great introduction to a gardening project with the little one in your life. While the storyline talks about creating a garden, the illustrations also include descriptions of cloud types, stages of germination, the life cycle of a butterfly, and a detailed description of the parts of a flower (we're talking stamen, pistil, stigma, etc.). Even a science teacher would be impressed by the amount of information contained in the illustrations of this book.
Overall, I found the visual appeal of this book to be mixed. The illustration is achieved by a collage of sorts with fabrics, photographs, and paper painted with gouche. While I loved the photographs, I found the painting to be over-simplistic and rather unappealing. However, this is actually a minor drawback as the book is rich in so many other ways.
Armchair Interviews says: Zinnia's Flower Garden is a book that can be brought out spring after spring--inspiring the next generation of gardeners!

A beautiful addition to any child's library!.......2002-04-24
When my son fell in love with all things blooming, I began my search for a book about flowers. I had been searching for a book that featured several different flower types and their names, as well as color illustrations. I was so pleased when I found Alison's Zinnia! Not only are there beautiful color paintings of the different blooms, there is also a narrative that teaches the ABC's. A few of the flower types are difficult to pronounce (even for the adults out there!), and how many girls do we really know named Xantippa? Also, I was a little disappointed that all the names featured in the book were little girls. I would have liked to see some boys thrown in the mix. Especially since I bought his book for my son. But I still think that the book is a priceless addition to our family library.
enchanting.......2000-01-27
My 4 year old daughter and I found this book light-hearted and enchanting. The illustrations are beautiful. The book flows smoothly from start to finish making it a very pleasurable read for both parent and child. My daughter brings this book to me on a daily basis and we have read it over and over again. Delightful!
Flowers A to Z.......1999-11-27
Anita Lobel's Alison's Zinnia is a unique alphabet book using a circular tale to lead the reader from A to Z. Each page has one line which begins with a girl's name and a flower for that particular letter and ends with a girl's name for the next letter, "Heather hosed a Hyacinth for Irene". The split page illustrations show a large detailed painting of the flower on top and the story line with the alphabet letter below the text. I believe children will enjoy the challenge of the unusual names and the flowers portrayed in the picture book. In the classroom it would be a great children's literature rewrite. The students could use, for example, boys names and vegetables to create their own classroom version. Another example of her beautiful art work and her ability to capture the details of a flower are in The Rose in my Garden by Arnold and Anita Lobel.

A Lovely Little Fairy World in the Making.......2006-09-19
Wow, so orange and sparkly! It was this that first attracted my Girl to this series of easy chapter books (she read the one about Lavender first). These sweet, easy to read chapter books also have some black and white ink drawings added to help bring the story to life for young readers! This book is rated "all ages," but I think its best as a read aloud for ages 3-7 and/or as a starter chapter book for beginner readers ages 6-8, who might be struggling with the transition from picture story books to all words chapter books. I doubt kids older than about ten would have any interest in these simple stories. Don't get me wrong, they are very cute...the whole created garden fairy world is quite lovely and well done, but they are not sophisticated in anyway and are fairly simple and straightforward in presentation, so older readers may find them a tad sedate.
This particular volume focuses on Zinnia who is babysitting her two younger cousins, Daisy and Double Daisy and while she loves them, the repetition of their tea party play is wearing on her. She's dreaming of the adventures she might have with her friends Hazelnut and Beechnut, who live in the more exciting outskirts of the garden (where there is more of a chance to see humans). After some daydreaming, Zinnia is offered an out by the ever helpful and fun loving Apple Blossom who offers to watch over her cousins while she goes off on an adventure.
This is where the excitement for Zinnia begins. She's unable to find her friends and becomes distracted by some human children off to explore the marsh, a place that sound exotic and exciting to Zinnia...some place she's never been. So off she goes, trailing the human children. What an adventure she does have. Young readers, particularly girls will love this series. Each is a bit of a moral tale, dressed up in bright flower garments and sparkling wings and a little fairy dust thrown in. What is Zinnia's lesson? To discover that no matter what adventure she had, no place is better than home! Sweet and sure to please young readers! I rate it a B simply because it doesn't really entertain me along with the kids...it's cute and thankfully not saccharine sweet, but it's also a tad sedate and that detracts from the overall enjoyment for me as the person reading to them. I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 3 simply because I think for what it's meant to be, an early chapter book, it does it's job admirably...readers making the transition to all word chapter books will find this easy enough, with a few pictures to help bring the story to life and not so long that it feels like they'll never get it read!
