Book Description
Athol Fugard is renowned for his relentless explorations of personal and political survival in apartheid South Africa — which include his now classic plays Master Harold and the Boys and The Blood Knot. Fugard has written a single novel, Tsotsi, which director Gavin Hood has made into a feature film that is South Africa's official entry for the 2006 Academy Awards. Set amid the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto, where survival is the primary objective, Tsotsi traces six days in the life of a ruthless young gang leader.
When we meet Tsotsi, he is a man without a name (tsotsi is Afrikaans for "hoodlum") who has repressed his past and now exists only to stage and execute vicious crimes. When he inadvertently kidnaps a baby, Tsotsi is confronted with memories of his own painful childhood, and this angry young man begins to rediscover his own humanity, dignity, and capacity to love.
Customer Reviews:
Heartbreaking.......2007-07-26
Athol Fugard is a brilliant writer and commented on the evils of apartheid for many years through his plays. This novel is heart-breaking as it describes the terror of a child left alone to fend for himself in a large city in Africa with no welfare services.
The child has no choice but to become part of a gang of other street kids and they survive only by criminal behaviour. This story is dark and tragic and very well told. The saddest thing is that this is the story of many young criminals throughout the world and that our society allows this to happen over and over again.
Fantastic.......2007-01-09
Gripping and contemporary (despite when it was penned) plot. Meticulous yet poetic writing. If there were a rating higher than "five," this novel would have it.
Short, Harrowing -- Still Plenty Good Enough.......2006-11-02
This remarkable short novel sat in the author's files for years before it was published, as Fugard wondered if it was good enough. It recently gained attention as the film adaptation won the 2005 Academy Award for best foreign language film. Like Rohinton Mistry, Fugard focuses on the underclass in his adopted home of South Africa, but unlike Mistry, the boundaries of his world stop there. Violence, redemption and fate all take turns in this story of a young thug's rediscovery of his past and development of his future. A harrowing, yet somehow very satisfying read.
Pas, Kaffir!.......2006-05-13
In a razzia by the South-African police looking for illegal immigrants, the main character of this book, a 10 year old, looses 'the big, gentle, warm, protective mother behind whom he had hidden and escaped from the whole world of a child's fear.'
From now on, he stays defenseless in a strange labyrinth of laws, 'loneliness, being the only person in the world ... He learnt the lesson of hunger ... He learnt to watch for the weakness of sympathy or compassion for others weaker than yourself, like discovering how never to feel the pain you inflicted. He had no use for memories ... There was only the present, that continuous moment carrying him forward without question of regret.'
He becomes a tsotsi, a wild, brutally killing animal, always looking around for easy targets (the painted and the cripple): 'There was no conflict. It wasn't a question of should I, or shouldn't I. He was resigned to the inevitable, watching it unfold as doctors would the last stages of a disease in a patient who is beyond help.'
But one day, his wild mind is shaken when he meets a woman with a child. He is confronted with the moral problem of 'decency' as one of his gang members said.
Athol Fugard draws a profoundly moving and dramatic picture of a child gang in a dark and life threatening city. The treatment of the variations on the theme of absence - mother, father, friends, moral conscience, life - is not less than masterful.
This book is a real masterpiece.
A profoundly moving and achingly beautiful masterpiece.......1999-04-24
Upon finishing this book I could not help but wonder if there has ever been a work of literature which could transcend the beauty and depth of perception and compassion conveyed in Fugard's "Tsotsi." If anyone reading this knows of such a work, please do feel free to e-mail me so that I can experience what will be the height of greatness.

Book Description
Membrane reactors are an inherently multidisciplinary concept combining chemical reaction engineering, separation technology, materials science, and mathematical modelling aspects. They couple chemical reactions with membrane separation and provide a more compact and less capital intensive system design, but also often improved performance in terms of enhanced selectivity and/or yield.
This authoritative work encompasses a broad treatment of the field, including the basic principles of membrane reactors, a comparative study of these and other classical reactors, modelling, industrial applications, emerging applications, etc.
This is the first point of reference when it comes to applying the membrane reactor concept to research or to production: The novice can grasp the elementary concepts, and the professional can familiarize themselves with the most recent developments in the area. For the industrial practitioner the book covers all important current, and potential future applications.

Book Description
The message of this marketing guide is simple: the correct interpretation of cultural signals is the most important part of opening new territories and entering niche markets. Providing an overview of the basic South African mindset and its regional variations, the book explains that South Africans have had to break down many doors to succeed, and they enjoy being treated like chiefs—whether in parliament, the boardroom, in church, or on the street—and all marketing strategies should be tailored accordingly.

Book Description
Distressed over the current widespread disinterest in matrimony among their eminently marriageable offspring, the formidable matriarchs of the ton have taken matters into their own meddling hands with the formation of The Ladies' Society for the Betterment of the Future of Britain. Their first challenge: the Earl of Pennington.
Miss Gwendolyn Townsend has seen her late father's estate go to a distant cousin she can't abide ... leaving her well-educated, able to make a perfect curtsy -- and penniless. So imagine her shock when it's discovered that a match had been arranged between herself and Marcus Holcroft, the Earl of Pennington -- one of the most eligible members of London society. Marcus constantly leaves her breathless and confused ... and though she's hesitant to marry a man she's just met, in the end she has no choice. But she makes some conditions first ...
Marcus cannot believe that the bride who has been foisted upon him is insisting on rules to their wedding ... and bedding! He's a man who has never had to tempt any woman into his arms. But even more surprising is that Gwendolyn is clearly hiding something -- and it shocks him to think that their exquisite kisses -- followed by his lessons in passionate lovemaking -- wouldn't be enough to make his wife tell him her every secret. After all, he's promised to be a proper husband -- isn't it fair to also expect a proper wife?

Customer Reviews:
For an arranged marriage this one had lots of love!.......2005-10-20
Through the manipulation of match making mamma's - in this case Marcus's own momma Helena - it appeared that Marcus had to marry Gwen in order to maintain his fortune. Gwen, had had a difficult life and no reason to trust anyone especially men. At first she was reluctant to wed Marcus even though he seemed quite perfect -looks, background, kind, intelligent what more could she want. She all of a sudden found herself having to care for her 3 nieces so she instantly agreed to the wedding, keeping the secret of her nieces from Marcus. I am always amazed how quickly some of these arranged romances actually become love matches. But this one did and the feelings were very real and the story quite interesting. Marcus wanted a complete marriage with trust and forever, it took a little longer for Gwen to find this with Marcus but when she did it was a complete and happy union for the two of them - and Marcus's mother Helena was quite proud of herself.
Warm, witty and delightful.......2003-08-22
Love With the Proper Husband is warm, witty and delightful. It is fast-paced, unfailingly entertaining and full of thoroughly lovable characters.
Penniless Miss Gwendolyn Townsend is called back to England from the post she loathes as a governess in America. She is thrilled to find out that she has a small legacy and that she will have a fortune if she does just one thing. Unfortunately, the one thing turns out to be to marry Marcus Holcroft, Earl of Pennington, a man she considers insufferably arrogant. Besides, she has no desire to marry anyone now that she finally has the means to be independent.
Marcus is incredulous to find out soon before he turns thirty that his deceased father left a will saying that, failing to find a different bride earlier, Marcus must marry Gwen before he is thirty or lose his whole fortune. (Something else is afoot, of course, in this situation that the reader knows but the characters don't.) After repeatedly refusing Marcus, Gwen abruptly agrees to marry him-but only because she develops a secret life for which she must have money.
It is hilarious, romantic and just plain fun watching Marcus and Gwen's growing relationship. And it is beautiful how warm and caring their relationship eventually becomes. Marcus' knack for lightening any situation and his easy forgiveness of Gwen's faults is endearing. Their wedding night is a hoot-funny, unexpected yet utterly passionate and romantic.
The other characters are equally lovable and endearing-especially the three nieces and the two Madames are wonderful, as is Marcus' mother. She puts on quite a show for Marcus early in the novel-I wish we could have seen even more of her.
The only weakness I noticed was that the last plot twist concerning the nieces is not really believable. Despite this, Love With the Proper Husband is a genuinely fun and absorbing novel that should not be missed!
A Good Read.......2003-07-22
An interesting story, with good characters. Gwen was wonderful, she was lovely and smart (most of the time) and Marcus wasn't bad. I don't know, something was lacking with this hero for me. Didn't quite feel he was 'all that'. His friend Reggie was much more interesting.
I have only recently discovered this author, and I liked HER HIGHNESS, MY WIFE, much better.
Marvelous regency -- Very highly recommended.......2003-04-18
A lawyer's foolish mistake leaves Gwendolyn Townsend penniless. Resourceful and determined, she accepts work as governess, but her positions are short lived when employers attempt to force her into their beds. While working in America, Gwen receives a ticket back to London from her lawyer, which she gratefully accepts. It seems that her father's will did leave her modest living, and quite a bit more if she accepts her father's choice of a husband. Her father's wishes were for her to marry the Earl of Pennington. But it is Gwen's new obligation to her three orphaned nieces that seals her decision to marry.
Marcus Hocroft, the Earl of Pennington, has sought a bride for years. But his desire for intelligence in addition to an attractive appearance seems to have made his quest impossible. Then, three months before his thirtieth birthday, Marcus learns of his father's will, dictating that he marry Gwendolyn Townsend if he has not previously chosen a bride by his birthday. He assumes he will have a marriage of convince until he meets Gwen and passion flairs. But passion is not enough when there is trust to be built.
With quixotic flair, author Victoria Alexander pens a must read regency in LOVE WITH THE PROPER HUSBAND. Irreverent humor, unexpected levity and sparkling wit all find voice from fresh characterizations and subtly unexpected plotting. Gwen and Marcus, as well as marvelous cast of secondary characters, are filled with the joys and foibles that brings each characterization vividly alive. Matchmaking, fiery independence and necessity combine in this amusing read. Guaranteed to win the reader's heart, LOVE WITH THE PROPER HUSBAND comes very highly recommended.
well.......2003-04-10
Ok this is the first of her books that I have read. Ok You know what its about. I saw the back of the book and liked what I thought the book was gonna be about, it was not about that. Ok IT goes from one spot to the next. There is no deep dark anything. And the one thing she is keeping from him when he finds out, its like it was no big deal. Fine ok! There are things that happen in chapter one that you don't hear about to well the last chapter and they come out of the blue. For me It seems rushed. IT also was like they got a problem then all the sudden it was ok

Excellent story from a terrific author.......1999-12-21
I disdained romances, especially the categories, for years, and it was my loss. There are great stories, and this is one of them. Suzanne Brockmann is an accomplished, skillful writer. I cared about the characters, and the plot had excellent tension and suspense. I was glad the two lead characters found each other, and I was especially glad that John was, with Mariah's help, finally able to start the healing process from an earlier emotional trauma. One of the nicest things about romances is that the reader isn't left dangling - you know these two people have a happy ending, and that was very nice to see. Thank you.
