Book Description

For sixty years, Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in the Federal District of Sitka, a "temporary" safe haven created in the wake of revelations of the Holocaust and the shocking 1948 collapse of the fledgling state of Israel. Proud, grateful, and longing to be American, the Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant, gritty, soulful, and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. For sixty years they have been left alone, neglected and half-forgotten in a backwater of history. Now the District is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end: once again the tides of history threaten to sweep them up and carry them off into the unknown.

But homicide detective Meyer Landsman of the District Police has enough problems without worrying about the upcoming Reversion. His life is a shambles, his marriage a wreck, his career a disaster. He and his half-Tlingit partner, Berko Shemets, can't catch a break in any of their outstanding cases. Landsman's new supervisor is the love of his life—and also his worst nightmare. And in the cheap hotel where he has washed up, someone has just committed a murder—right under Landsman's nose. Out of habit, obligation, and a mysterious sense that it somehow offers him a shot at redeeming himself, Landsman begins to investigate the killing of his neighbor, a former chess prodigy. But when word comes down from on high that the case is to be dropped immediately, Landsman soon finds himself contending with all the powerful forces of faith, obsession, hopefulness, evil, and salvation that are his heritage—and with the unfinished business of his marriage to Bina Gelbfish, the one person who understands his darkest fears.

At once a gripping whodunit, a love story, an homage to 1940s noir, and an exploration of the mysteries of exile and redemption, The Yiddish Policemen's Union is a novel only Michael Chabon could have written.

3 out of 5 stars Slow-starter but good.......2007-10-10

After slogging my way through Yiddish references ad infinitum, this book finally got good after the halfway mark. I was disappointed as it wasn't nearly as engaging as his other books. (Maybe if I had a strong Jewish heritage, I would have enjoyed it more.)

5 out of 5 stars Another Classic From Chabon.......2007-10-09

If you loved Summerland, Wonder Boys, Mysteries of Pittsburgh order The Yiddish Policemen's Union today. Chabon delivers another classic.

5 out of 5 stars Go With the Flow.......2007-10-09

Like many reviewers, I found this book hard to follow, but I gave it a chance and found myself getting into the flow of the story. What I was confused about, I let go, and then I was swept into the telling of an amazing tale. I eventually found it hard to put down.

After finishing the book this morning, one of the wonderful things I love about reading happened regarding the journey it takes you on and the connections it forges. I watched Bill Moyers Journal which I had taped and was amazed to watch the short film about John Hagee and CUFI, Christians United for Israel and Moyers' discussion with Rabbi Michael Lerner and Dr. Timothy Weber. Suddenly Michael Chabon's story did not seem so outlandish. Suddenly I was sore afraid.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-10-01

I heard so many good things about Chabon that I decided to read his new book. I am struggling. It is hard to understand--too many Yiddish phrases that I don't comprehend. I have lots of Jewish friends, so you would think that something would be familiar. Oh well, I will try to finish this book as I hate to give up on anything, but it will be hard. Don't think I will try Chabon's other books.

3 out of 5 stars Too Cutsey.......2007-09-24

Hard to fathom and follow, thanks to too many cutesy Yiddish expressions and associations. And I'm familiar with Yiddish.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you watch the show on TV.......2007-01-08

If you don't watch TV, then you might find this book vaguely interesting.
But I got this for an XMAS gift and I watch the show on TV. I found this book to be redundant at best.

Other than a bit of background info on the hosts and the producer, there is absolutely nothing in this book that you won't find on the TV shows.

All the info they cover is just a re-hash of each episode from the TV show, and given the choice, the TV show version is much much better than a print version that literally has low-resolution "screenshots" from the episodes to illustrate.

I was also surprised to find the last 11 pages of the book Absolutely Blank!
This was not a mis-print, it was probably cheaper to print the book with those pages left blank than to physically leave them out. The authors could not get enough information to fill in the blank sections?

The book seems to be a rush-job that just capitalizes on the popularity of the TV show.
The TV series this book is based on illustrates everything in the book MUCH clearer than the book itself.

Given the option, buy or rent the DVDs of the TV series and forget about this book.

5 out of 5 stars A well-done book based on a great show!.......2007-01-04

I've only caught MythBusters a few times on tv, but enjoy it enough to have shelled out for the book. It's fun to be able to read about their efforts without having to go to the effort to remember when the show is on tv ...
Well written, with the same sense of humor and fun that Adam and Jamie display on the air.
(And, for the reviewer who panned the book because she 'didn't know it was based on a tv show,' ... why should you blame the book because you didn't read the description? The summary very clearly states what the book is about, and what it's based on!)

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures and myths- should come out with more of these.......2006-12-31

This is a fun little book with great color pictures and interesting myths. One could be tempted to skip through all the writing about what they actually did during the show and just read if the myth's busted. Very interesting and easy to just flip through- certainly don't need to read it cover to cover.

Considering these 30 myths were probably from about 20 of their many episodes, they should come out with more books like this so people who don't get the Discovery Channel (like me) and can only catch it occasionally somewhere else can read up on the myths in these nifty books.

1 out of 5 stars Mythbusters a bust.......2006-06-29

I did not realize that this book was based on a television show because I do not watch television. I thought it was about debunking urban legends such as alligators in New York sewers and such; I was not expecting a lot of scientific proofs of how balloons fly and so on. I definitely wasted my money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION.......2005-12-05

This show is in its 4th Season, and Adam and Jamie STILL haven't run out of urban legends to put the scientific test to. Fascinating and fun science. Nice to have 30 of the best myths in book form, but the real way to enjoy "Mythbusters" is to watch the show -- every week on Discovery -- and to buy the DVD collections. And if you love Mythbusters, be sure to pick up all of the books by Jan Harold Brunvand ("The Baby Train", "The Choking Doberman", "Curses! Broiled Again!", "The Urban Legend Encyclopedia", and many more titles). Also, check out the new book "Turn Me On, Dead Man" by Andru J. Reeve. It explores, in depth, the entire story behind the Paul McCartney Death Hoax of 1969. Like the Mythbusters, Reeve gets to the truth behind the myth. Buy all of these books and DVDs right here at Amazon.com and watch "Mythbusters" every Wednesday on Discovery.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Deck for Personal Readings..........2002-11-02

This is my second deck and I am most pleased by these cards. I related strongly to these for readings that I conduct for myself. I find them to be accurate and personable. The artwork is bright, engaging, and stimulating. Even when doing single card readings, the message revealed gets right to the heart of the matter. I feel extremely comfortable with this deck.

5 out of 5 stars A complete survey of the tarot cards including readings.......2001-08-16

Author and Gestalt therapist Audrey Savage and artist and designer Paul Scott Franzt effectively collaborate in the creation of Dance Of Life Cards: An Intimate Tarot. This an outstanding "how-to" book and tarot deck combination that will be greatly appreciated by students of metaphysics in general, and of tarot card readings in particular. Following an informative introduction to the principles and history of traditional tarot, the reader is presented with a complete survey of the tarot cards including readings and spreads. The "user friendly" text is enhanced with an appendix (Tarot and Your Life Processes) and a bibliography for further study. Highly recommended.

Fab press out of the u.k. have been churning out top quality books for several years now, this one was no exception.A little smaller than some of their other titles, and not published in hardback, but otherwise given the same loving treatment.
This book is filled with many color reproductions of rare posters, lobby cards, etc. a visually stimulating introduction to the curious,as well a treat to the dedicated Ruggero Deadato fan.
Obviously Cannibal Holocaust is the predominant subject matter here, but also info on all his other genre pictures!

Your review ( or reccomendation) hasn't gone unread and I agree with you 100% if you are really dedicated to finding and buying this movie it is out there and readily available, I got mine from a place called Scarecrow video out of Seattle, WA, they specialize in hard to find dvd's and they have more than one version available. This is a movie you won't see on cable or any of your other movie channels if you want to see it you will have to pay at least $20.00, but in my opinion it is worth every penny. This is one of those films that you need to watch just to say you did. Find it, buy it, watch it, you might thank yourself!

Book Description

"...an extraordinary work ...beautifully written ...Prince has recuperated Peckinpah's reputation as one of the most important artists of the postwar American cinema-perhaps the crucial link between late classical and postmodern Hollywood."

—David A. Cook, Director, Film Studies Program, Emory University, and author of History of Narrative Film

More than any other filmmaker, Sam Peckinpah opened the door for graphic violence in movies. In this book, Stephen Prince explains the rise of explicit violence in the American cinema, its social effects, and the relation of contemporary ultraviolence to the radical, humanistic filmmaking that Peckinpah practiced.

Prince demonstrates Peckinpah's complex approach to screen violence and shows him as a serious artist whose work was tied to the social and political upheavals of the 1960s. He explains how the director's commitment to showing the horror and pain of violence compelled him to use a complex style that aimed to control the viewer's response.

Prince offers an unprecedented portrait of Peckinpah the filmmaker. Drawing on primary research materials—Peckinpah's unpublished correspondence, scripts, production memos, and editing notes—he provides a wealth of new information about the making of the films and Peckinpah's critical shaping of their content and violent imagery. This material shows Peckinpah as a filmmaker of intelligence, a keen observer of American society, and a tragic artist disturbed by the images he created.

Prince's account establishes, for the first time, Peckinpah's place as a major filmmaker. This book is essential reading for those interested in Peckinpah, the problem of movie violence, and contemporary American cinema.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Unusual Take on Peckinpah.......2004-12-12

Savage Cinema surprised me. Usually, books on Peckinpah focus on his relationship with the Western genre and put The Wild Bunch as his chief accomplishment.

Savage Cinema, however, looks at Peckinpah's relationship with violence and focuses instead on Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. Ride the High Country and Major Dundee are barely mentioned, and Stephen Prince viewed The Wild Bunch as something that Peckinpah had grown past in these three later films.

The result was a book that viewed Peckinpah through a fresh set of eyes, instead of one that plowed over the same ground. I found the book very fascinating and convincing. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that Prince's chapter on the use of montage became hard for me to follow. But apart from that, this is a very interesting book that shows how Peckinpah was a major filmmaker and different from the "ultraviolence" of today's cinema.

3 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking and Meticulous.......2003-04-05

This book tells in great detail the relationship of violence in Sam Peckinpaugh's films and it's predecessors today. While I would recommend it to Peckingpaugh fans, critically-minded and socially-aware Hollywood types, and for academic purposes, this book is a little lengthy and tedious for those seeking a quick and easy read. Thought-provoking and meticulous.

4 out of 5 stars A significant, insightful work.......2000-09-13

Prince doesn't get the fifth star only because the book is a little underwritten in parts (like the conclusion), and because I feel his analysis of "Straw Dogs", while well-intentioned and mostly solid, seems a little unbalanced with regard to David Sumner (Hoffman). Nevertheless, this is a a MUST-HAVE for students of Peckinpah and/or cinematic violence. Particularly fascinating is Prince's unique view of "Peckinpah's great trilogy on the toxic nature of violence" (re: "Straw Dogs", "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia"), which represents a significant breakthrough in the literature. The freshness and clarity of 90 percent of this book make it worthwhile, and the other 10 percent is still readable. Don't expect Vonnegut, after all this is a critical volume. Highly recommended to students and cinephiles.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of analysis on a brilliant film artist.......1999-07-09

Prince's book is a rich, deep study of Peckinpah's own serious and humanitarian concerns with violence, and how his films were a personal crusade against Man's inhumanity to Man. The author convincingly argues the director grew away from the catharsis philosophy and developed a more uncompromising style. A masterpiece, and a must!

5 out of 5 stars THE #1 BEST book to start out with!.......2002-02-25

I went to the library and tried every book they have on the topic... we keep renewing this one, so now I'm going to buy it. This is like all the other books combined... it has everything!

The diagrams of steps and positions, in adition to the basic first five, are extensive and well-organized into chapters on Exercises at the Barre, Centre Work, Jumps and Travelling Steps... rounding off with A Simple Dance (combining various steps, etc.), and ending with a short (1-page) discussion of steps for two people (no diagrams here, just a few illustrations of people in costume).

My daughter is barely 3 and loves it... first thing in the morning we do some of the excersizes together and practice some of the basic positions. Before nap time, we read the story of how ballet began, look at the pictures of the costumes and the pictures of clothes people wear to a ballet class, talk about which ones she wants to wear someday when she is old enough to take a ballet class, and how you make up your own ballet. (She has made up her own silly ones, too.) And before bed at night, we read (and re-read ad infinitum!) the Stories of Ballets (though you do have to ad-lib to soften them a bit for kids this young, because most of them end in tragedy) and of Famous Dancers.

Our day does not revolve around ballet so much as it does around books and playing... but for over 2 months now, this book has not been out of the lineup one single afternoon or night.

And I'll never give up our morning exercise routine, so this book's big collection of diagrammed positions is something we will be able to grow into over time.

My daughter isn't interested in the sections on The Structure of a Ballet Company, Ballet As A Career, or Life At A Ballet School, but I thought they were great, and I can see how they can put some reality into the fantasies of parents or pre-teens.

On top of all that, there's a glossary at the end and a full index... it's just a very well-written book, appropriate for ALL ages.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent children's/beginner's guide to ballet........1999-01-12

Excellent information for the person just starting to study ballet. Be it child or grown up, this book is filled with facts from ballet technique to history, and even includes a dictionary of ballet terms. A must for any child starting ballet.....although one must realize that the ballet studio described in the book is not what one will ALWAYS find... studios' set up and rules do vary... Especially informative is the section about famous ballet dancers and choreographers, as well as the sketches showing how to do the basic positions and steps. You will not be dissatisfied with this one.

          Book Description

Rim Fannin will do just about anything to prove that John Romaine, the owner of White Mountain Freight, is the traitor responsible for his father's death. So when he gets word in the sooty blackness of a Tucson alley that twenty heavily guarded White Mountain wagons are traveling by night toward Tubac, Rim signs on as a mule skinner. He isn't very good with a mule whip but he manages . . . until his train is attacked by Indians and he is captured. Rim knows escape is hopeless when his captors take him to Canyon de Chelly. And late one night when the Bear Clan holds a fire dance in the shadow of Spider Rock, he realizes why he has been taken alive . . . .
